RESUMO

We present measurements of ice-ablator mix at stagnation of inertially confined, cryogenically layered capsule implosions. An ice layer thickness scan with layers significantly thinner than used in ignition experiments enables us to investigate mix near the inner ablator interface. Our experiments reveal for the first time that the majority of atomically mixed ablator material is "dark" mix. It is seeded by the ice-ablator interface instability and located in the relatively cooler, denser region of the fuel assembly surrounding the fusion hot spot. The amount of dark mix is an important quantity as it is thought to affect both fusion fuel compression and burn propagation when it turns into hot mix as the burn wave propagates through the initially colder fuel region surrounding an igniting hot spot. We demonstrate a significant reduction in ice-ablator mix in the hot-spot boundary region when we increase the initial ice layer thickness.

RESUMO

We investigate on the National Ignition Facility the ablative Rayleigh-Taylor instability in the transition from weakly nonlinear to highly nonlinear regimes. A planar plastic package with preimposed two-dimensional broadband modulations is accelerated for up to 12 ns by the x-ray drive of a gas-filled Au radiation cavity with a radiative temperature plateau at 175 eV. This extended tailored drive allows a distance traveled in excess of 1 mm for a 130 µm thick foil. Measurements of the modulation optical density performed by x-ray radiography show that a bubble-merger regime for the Rayleigh-Taylor instability at an ablation front is achieved for the first time in indirect drive. The mutimode modulation amplitudes are in the nonlinear regime, grow beyond the Haan multimode saturation level, evolve toward the longer wavelengths, and show insensitivity to the initial conditions.

RESUMO

Solid-liquid separation with flocculation can be used as pre-treatment for reverse osmosis (RO) filtration as it produces a liquid fraction (LF) low in suspended solids (SS). However, residual polymers in the LF may foul the membrane. Membrane fouling during RO filtration of swine wastewater containing polymers was investigated with respect to polymer charge density (CD), effluent SS concentration and membrane surface charge. Effluents with 765 mg/L SS and without SS were spiked with low and medium CD polymers (0-40 mg/L effluent) then processed with RO membranes having low and high negative surface charges. Fouling intensity was evaluated by comparing permeate flux and water flux recovery of fouled and cleaned membranes. For effluents containing SS, the presence of polymer reduced permeate flux by 4-16% and water flux recovery of the fouled membrane by 0-18%, relative to effluents without polymer. The extent of the fouling was higher with the low than the medium CD polymer. The fouling was mostly reversible as cleaning allowed for over 95% flux recovery, but the membrane with high negative surface charge was more susceptible to irreversible fouling. Adding the low CD polymer to feed without SS had no effect on permeate flux or flux recovery. Membrane fouling thus appeared to be caused by the polymer changing SS-membrane interaction. If flocculation is applied to pre-treat manure, a medium CD polymer should be used to optimize SS removal and a membrane with low surface charge should be selected to minimize fouling.

RESUMO

We present a simple solution to the Fresnel-Kirchoff diffraction integral that is appropriate for x-ray radiography of strongly absorbing and phase-shifting objects in the geometrical optics regime, where phase contrast enhancements can be considered to be caused by refraction by a semi-opaque object. We demonstrate its accuracy by comparison to brute-force numerical ray trace and diffraction calculations of a representative simulated object, and show excellent agreement for spatial scales corresponding to Fresnel numbers greater than unity. The result represents a significant improvement over approximate formulas typically used in analysis of refraction-enhanced radiographs, particularly for radiography of transient phenomena in objects that strongly refract and show significant absorption.

RESUMO

The liquid fraction from a solid-liquid separator for swine manure, which used a cationic polymer to promote particle flocculation, was processed by one nanofiltration and two reverse osmosis spiral-wound membranes. Eight different liquid fraction batches (750 to 1750 L) were concentrated at volumetric concentration ratios (VCRs, initial to final volumes) ranging from 2.3 to 4.2. Membrane fouling intensity was highly variable, as water flux recovery after concentration cycles ranged from 13% to 88%. The most severe fouling was caused by a liquid fraction that had relatively low suspended solids (SS) (774 mg/L) and was concentrated at a low VCR of 2.6. Raw manure collected the same day also contained low SS, suggesting that fewer sites were available for polymer adsorption and thus more polymer remained in the liquid. However, because of the high opacity of the samples, residual polymer could not be detected in any feed or concentrate samples. Fouling was not totally irreversible as over 97% of membrane flux could be recovered by cleaning with acidic and alkaline solutions. Further tests with spiked liquid fractions indicated that fouling due to residual polymer in solution started to occur at a polymer concentration of 3 and 11 mg/L in initial and concentrated effluents, respectively. If a cationic polymer is used to pretreat manure, the amount of added polymer would have to be closely related to SS content as opposed to manure volume, in order to leave very little residual polymer in solution.

RESUMO

The practice of intensive animal production in certain areas has resulted in excessive manure production for the available regional land base. Consequently, there is a need to develop treatment technologies to recover the valuable nutrients that manure contains so that the resulting product can be transported and used as fertilizer on agricultural land. The project presented here used electrodialysis in a dilution/concentration configuration to transfer the manure ammonia in the diluate solution by electromigration to an adjacent solution separated by an ion-exchange membrane under the driving force of an electrical potential. Then, air stripping from the electrodialysis-obtained concentrate solution without pH modification was used to isolate the ammonia in an acidic solution. An optimal process operating voltage of 17.5 V was first determined on the basis of current efficiency and total energy consumption. During the process, the swine manure pH varied from 8.5 to 8.2, values favourable for NH(4)(+) electromigration. Total ammonia nitrogen reached 21,352 mg/L in the concentrate solution, representing approximately seven times the concentration in the swine manure. Further increases in concentration were limited by water transfer from the diluate solution due to electroosmosis and osmosis. Applying vacuum to the concentrate reservoir was found to be more efficient than direct concentrate solution aeration for NH(3) recuperation in the acid trap, given that the ammonia recuperated under vacuum represented 14.5% of the theoretical value of the NH(3) present in the concentrate solution as compared to 6.2% for aeration. However, an excessively low concentrate solution pH (8.6-8.3) limited NH(3)volatilization toward the acid trap. These results suggest that the concentrate solution pH needs to be raised to promote the volatile NH(3) form of total ammonia nitrogen.

RESUMO

A Monte Carlo technique has been developed to simulate the expected signal and the statistical noise of x-ray spectrometers that use streak cameras to achieve the time resolution required for ultrafast diagnostics of laser-generated plasmas. The technique accounts for statistics from both the photons incident on the streak camera's photocathode and the electrons emitted by the photocathode travelling through the camera's electron optics to the sensor. We use the technique to optimize the design of a spectrometer, which deduces the temporal history of electron temperature of the hotspot in an inertial confinement fusion implosion from its hard x-ray continuum emission spectra. The technique is general enough to be applied to any instrument using an x-ray streak camera.

RESUMO

We experimentally study the late-time, highly nonlinear regime of the Rayleigh-Taylor instability in a decelerating phase. A series of laser-driven experiments is performed on the LULI2000 laser, in which the initial Atwood number is varied by adjusting the decelerating medium density. The high-power laser is used in a direct drive configuration to put into motion a solid target. Its rear side, which initially possesses a two-dimensional machined sinusoidal perturbations, expands and decelerates into a foam leading to a Rayleigh-Taylor unstable situation. The interface position and morphology are measured by time-resolved x-ray radiography. We develop a simple Atwood-dependent model describing the motion of the decelerating interface, from which its acceleration history is obtained. The measured amplitude of the instability, or mixing zone width, is then compared with late-time acceleration-dependent Rayleigh-Taylor instability models. The shortcomings of this classical model, when applied to high-energy-density conditions, are shown. This calls into question their uses for systems, where a shock wave is present, such as those found in laboratory astrophysics or in inertial confinement fusion.

RESUMO

In inertial confinement fusion, penetrating asymmetric hohlraum preheat radiation (>1.8 keV, which includes high temperature coronal M-band emission from laser spots) can lead to asymmetric ablation front and ablator-fuel interface hydrodynamic instability growth in the imploding capsule. First experiments to infer the preheat asymmetries at the capsule were performed on the National Ignition Facility for high density carbon (HDC) capsules in low density fill (0.3 mg/cc 4He) Au hohlraums by time resolved imaging of 2.3 keV fluorescence emission of a smaller Mo sphere placed inside the capsule. Measured Mo emission is pole hot (P2 > 0) since M-band is generated mainly by the outer laser beams as their irradiance at the hohlraum wall is 5× higher than for the inner beams. P2 has a large swing vs time, giving insight into the laser heated hohlraum dynamics. P4 asymmetry is small at the sphere due to efficient geometric smoothing of hohlraum P4 asymmetries at large hohlraum-to-capsule radii ratios. The asymmetry at the HDC capsule is inferred from the Mo emission asymmetry accounting for the Mo/HDC radius difference and HDC capsule opacity.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Sperm banking is a suitable procedure to prevent infertility after cancer therapy in male adolescents. We evaluated the feasibility of semen preservation in 156 adolescents aged between 13 and 20 years and then we assessed fertility outcome after treatment. METHODS: Age, urogenital history, indications for cryopreservation, histological diagnosis and semen parameters were recorded. Fertility status after treatment was assessed by a questionnaire addressed to those patients who had utilized sperm storage. Post-treatment semen analysis was performed for 22 patients. RESULTS: Cryopreservation was possible in 88.5% of cases. Azoospermia was detected in 2.6% of the patients at the time of diagnosis. Malignant disease accounted for 84% of our male adolescents. In this type of disease, semen parameters were significantly altered only among patients with metastatic malignant bone tumour. After treatment, nine patients presented azoospermia, five patients achieved pregnancy spontaneously, two achieved it after assisted reproductive technique using fresh ejaculated spermatozoa and one following sperm donation. Three failed with cryopreserved sperm. CONCLUSIONS: Semen cryopreservation is possible for most adolescents and, regardless of disease type, may be a means of preserving fertility prior to gonadotoxic treatment that might impair the spermatogenesis process.

RESUMO

The Crystal Backlighter Imager (CBI) is a quasi-monochromatic, near-normal incidence, spherically bent crystal imager developed for the National Ignition Facility (NIF), which will allow inertial confinement fusion capsule implosions to be radiographed close to stagnation. This is not possible using the standard pinhole-based area-backlighter configuration, as the self-emission from the capsule hotspot overwhelms the backlighter signal in the final stages of the implosion. The CBI mitigates the broadband self-emission from the capsule hot spot by using the extremely narrow bandwidth inherent to near-normal-incidence Bragg diffraction. Implementing a backlighter system based on near-normal reflection in the NIF chamber presents unique challenges, requiring the CBI to adopt novel engineering and operational strategies. The CBI currently operates with an 11.6 keV backlighter, making it the highest energy radiography diagnostic based on spherically bent crystals to date. For a given velocity, Doppler shift is proportional to the emitted photon energy. At 11.6 keV, the ablation velocity of the backlighter plasma results in a Doppler shift that is significant compared to the bandwidth of the instrument and the width of the atomic line, requiring that the shift be measured to high accuracy and the optics aligned accordingly to compensate. Experiments will be presented that used the CBI itself to measure the backlighter Doppler shift to an accuracy of better than 1 eV. These experiments also measured the spatial resolution of CBI radiographs at 7.0 µm, close to theoretical predictions. Finally, results will be presented from an experiment in which the CBI radiographed a capsule implosion driven by a 1 MJ NIF laser pulse, demonstrating a significant (>100) improvement in the backlighter to self-emission ratio compared to the pinhole-based area-backlighter configuration.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Cryopreservation of immature testicular tissue could be considered as a major step in fertility preservation for young boys with cancer. In the present study, eight different freezing protocols were evaluated in immature mice testis. METHODS: Testis from six-day-old mice were frozen using either 1,2-propanediol (PROH) or dimethylsulphoxide (DMSO: D) at 1.5 M. Different cooling rate curves were tested: (i) controlled slow protocol with seeding (CS+) or (ii) without seeding (CS-), (iii) controlled rapid protocol and (iv) non-controlled protocol. Cryodamage of seminiferous cords was semi-quantitatively determined, establishing a scoring of alterations. Cell viability and apoptosis induction were assessed on testicular cell suspensions immediately after digestion (D0) and after a 20-h culture period (D1). Cells recovered after digestion of 100 mg tissue and the rate of living and non-apoptotic cells were quantified at D0 and D1. A long-term culture (9 days) of testis pieces was carried out for the protocol offering the best survival. Testosterone production, intratubular cell proliferation and tubule growth were assessed. RESULTS: DMSO produced optimal results in the different cooling rate curves tested when compared with PROH. Optimal results were obtained for the DCS- procedure (P < 0.05). Testosterone production, tubule growth and cell proliferation of post-thaw pieces were similar to fresh samples. CONCLUSIONS: Testis freezing with 1.5 M DMSO in a CS- procedure was found to maintain not only immature testicular tissue architecture, but also viability of testicular cells, endocrine and partial exocrine functions of the testis. Semi-quantitative evaluation of seminiferous cord cryodamage can be effectively used to rapidly screen optimal freezing conditions and as a possible quality control in a human application.

RESUMO

This project aimed at producing a concentrated nitrogen fertilizer from liquid swine manure using electrodialysis (ED) and reverse osmosis (RO), as a mean to help resolve the excess nutrient problem faced by many swine producers, and offer an alternative to chemical nitrogen fertilizer production. Different types of ED membranes were evaluated based on the NH4+ transfer rate, current efficiency and membrane stability. A combination of CMB/AMX membranes was retained due to its high NH4+ transfer rate and chemical stability. The maximum total ammonia concentration (NH3-N) achievable by ED was limited by water transport from the manure to the concentrate compartment, and ammonia volatilization (17%) from the open concentrate compartment. Results suggested that, under the conditions of this experiment, a maximum total NH3-N concentration of about 16g/L could be reached with the ED system. An ED concentrate (8.7g/L of total NH3-N) was also fed to TFC-HF reverse osmosis membranes. A mass balance analysis revealed that the RO permeate, which represented 49.6% of the initial volume, contained 8.6% of the ammonia. However, the RO concentrate contained only 66.6% of the initial total NH3-N, suggesting that 21.2% of the ammonia was volatilized during the concentration test with RO membranes. Ammonia concentration in the RO concentrate reached approximately 13g/L, which is similar to the maximum concentration that could be achieved by ED. These results suggest that the use of ED and RO membranes to recover and concentrate ammonia is potentially interesting but the process must include an approach to minimize ammonia volatilization or trap volatilized ammonia.

RESUMO

The objective of this study was to investigate the feasibility of using psychrophilic anaerobic digestion in sequencing batch reactors (PADSBRs) to co-digest grinded swine carcasses and swine manure slurry at 20 degrees C and 25 degrees C. The PADSBRs were operated on two-week and four-week treatment cycle lengths, which included the fill, react, and draw phases. Two carcass loading rates (CLRs) were tested, that is 20 and 40g of carcass per litre of manure, which were equivalent to 4 and 8 times, respectively, the normal mortality rate on commercial farms. The PADSBR performance was compared to that of PADSBRs operated at 25 degrees C and fed manure only. The addition of swine carcass to PADSBR feed did not affect the stability of the bioreactors at both CLRs. The performance of the PADSBRs co-digesting swine carcasses was not statistically different from the control in terms of biogas production and quality. There was no accumulation of volatile fatty acids in the bioreactors at the end of the treatment cycle. The mixed-liquor pH and alkalinity remained within acceptable ranges for the anaerobic microflora. Also, there was no operational problem caused by the formation of foam and scum in the system.

RESUMO

In the quest for reaching ignition of deuterium-tritium (DT) fuel capsule implosions, experiments on the National Ignition Facility (NIF) have shown lower final fuel areal densities than simulated. Possible explanations for reduced compression are higher preheat that can increase the ablator-DT ice density jump and induce mix at that interface or reverberating shocks. We are hence developing x-ray Refraction Enhanced Radiography (RER) to infer the inflight density profiles in layered fuel capsule implosions. We use a 5 µm slit backlit by a Ni 7.8 keV He-α NIF laser driven x-ray source positioned at 20 mm from the capsule to cast refracted images of the inflight capsule onto a streak camera in a high magnification (M ∼ 60×) setup. Our first experiments have validated our setup that recorded a streaked x-ray fringe pattern from an undriven high density carbon (HDC) capsule consistent with ray tracing calculations at the required ∼6 µm and 25 ps resolution. Streaked RER was then applied to inflight layered HDC capsule implosions using a hydrogen-tritium fuel mix rather than DT to reduce neutron yields and associated backgrounds. The first RER of an imploding capsule revealed strong features associated with the ablation front and ice-ablator interface that are not visible in standard absorption radiographs.

RESUMO

The objectives of the study were to measure the levels of manure nutrients retained in psychrophilic anaerobic sequencing batch reactors (PASBRs) digesting swine manure, and to determine the distribution of nutrients in the sludge and supernatant zones of settled bioreactor effluent. Anaerobic digestion reduced the total solids (TS) concentration and the soluble chemical oxygen demand (SCOD) of manure by 71.4% and 79.9%, respectively. The nitrogen, potassium, and sodium fed with the manure to the PASBRs were recovered in the effluent. The bioreactors retained on average 25.5% of the P, 8.7% of the Ca, 41.5% of the Cu, 18.4% of the Zn, and 67.7% of the S fed to the PASBRs. The natural settling of bioreactor effluent allowed further nutrient separation. The supernatant fraction, which represented 71.4% of effluent volume, contained 61.8% of the total N, 67.1% of the NH4-N, and 73.3% of the Na. The settled sludge fraction, which represented 28.6% of the volume, contained 57.6% of the solids, 62.3% of the P, 71.6% of the Ca, 89.6% of the Mg, 76.1% of the Al, 90.0% of the Cu, 74.2% of the Zn, and 52.2% of the S. The N/P ratio was increased from 3.9 in the raw manure to 5.2 in the bioreactor effluent and 9.2 in the supernatant fraction of the settled effluent. The PASBR technology will then substantially decrease the manure management costs of swine operations producing excess phosphorus, by reducing the volume of manure to export outside the farm. The separation of nutrients will also allow land spreading strategies that increase the agronomic value of manure by matching more closely the crop nutrient requirements.

RESUMO

In order to examine the nature of body image distortions, we studied their perceptual and idealised components using a video distortion technique to create photographs of dancers, anorexics and controls that made their bodies look larger. Each subject was then asked to adjust the photograph until it reflected her estimated and desired body size. The results show that: 1) all three groups perceived themselves to be heavier than they actually are, but the dancers had a more realistic perception of their body weight; 2) the dancers would have liked to be thinner, whereas the controls and anorexics were satisfied with their body weight; 3) the scores of the anorexic subjects were characterised by a lack of correlation between their perceptual and idealised distortions, whereas those of the dancers--and even more so those of the controls--were characterised by consistency between the two types of distortion.

RESUMO

Swine manure is a valuable source of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. After solid-liquid separation, the resulting swine wastewater can be concentrated by reverse osmosis (RO) to produce a nitrogen-potassium rich fertilizer. However, swine wastewater has a high fouling potential and an efficient cleaning strategy is required. In this study, a semi-commercial farm scale RO spiral-wound membrane unit was fouled while processing larger volumes of swine wastewater during realistic cyclic operations over a 9-week period. Membrane cleaning was performed daily. Three different cleaning solutions, containing SDS, SDS+EDTA and NaOH were compared. About 99% of the fouling resistance could be removed by rinsing the membrane with water. Flux recoveries (FRs) above 98% were achieved for all the three cleaning solutions after cleaning. No significant differences in FR were found between the cleaning solutions. The NaOH solution thus is a good economical option for cleaning RO spiral-wound membranes fouled with swine wastewater. Soaking the membrane for 3 days in permeate water at the end of each week further improved the FR. Furthermore, a fouling resistance model for predicting the fouling rate, permeate flux decay and cleaning cycle periods based on processing time and swine wastewater conductivity was developed.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to assess the usefulness of personality dimensions measured at ages 6 and 10 years in predicting early onset of cigarette smoking, alcohol abuse, and other drug use in boys. In addition, the stability of the prediction between the measurements at ages 6 and 10 years was investigated. METHODS: Data from a large longitudinal study of boys were used to assess the relation between childhood personality and the onset of substance use from 10 to 15 years of age. Childhood personalities were assessed by teachers' ratings of behaviors. Self-reports of smoking cigarettes, getting drunk, and using other drugs provided the measurement of substance use. Discrete-time survival analysis was used for the statistical analyses. RESULTS: High novelty-seeking and low harm avoidance significantly predict early onset of substance use (eg, cigarettes, alcohol, and other drugs), but reward dependence was unrelated to any of the outcomes studied. The results also indicated that either set of predictors (ie, the personality dimensions measured at ages 6 and 10 years) could be used to predict onset of cigarette smoking, getting drunk, and other drug use, because the power of prediction was similar between the measurements at ages 6 and 10 years. CONCLUSIONS: High novelty-seeking and low harm avoidance lead to early onset of substance use in boys. The stability of the prediction between ages 6 and 10 years suggests that the kindergarten assessments may be used for preventive efforts at school entry instead of waiting until early adolescence.

RESUMO

This work deals with the relationship between natural radiation and cancer mortality in several areas of the Côtes-du-Nord département in Brittany. Although the study area and populations were small, the results were significant, particularly for stomach cancer. It is suggested that the scope of the study should be extended to cover the whole of Brittany, and comparative studies with other granitic areas, above all in the Celtic parts of the British Isles, should be considered.
