RESUMO

The water column of harbors contains significant amounts of (priority) hazardous trace metals that may be released into coastal areas of high societal and economic interests where they may disturb their fragile equilibria. To deepen our understanding of the processes that influence the transport of the various metal fractions and allow for a more rigorous environmental risk assessment, it is important to spatially monitor the relevant chemical speciation of these metals. It is of particular interest to assess their so-called dynamic fraction, which comprises the dissolved chemical forms that are potentially bioavailable to living organisms. In this study this was achieved in the Genoa Harbor (NW Italy) for copper (Cu), lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd) and zinc (Zn) by applying a multi-method approach. For the first time in this system the dynamic fractions of the target metals (CuDyn, CdDyn, PbDyn, ZnDyn) were observed in real-time on-board by voltammetry using innovative electrochemical sensing devices. Trace metals in the operationally defined dissolved <0.2 µm and <0.02 µm fractions were equally quantified through sampling/laboratory-based techniques. The obtained results showed a clear spatial trend for all studied metals from the enclosed contaminated part of the harbor towards the open part. The highest CuDyn and CdDyn fractions were found in the inner part of the harbor while the highest PbDyn fraction was found in the open part. The proportion of ZnDyn was negligible in the sampled area. Small and coarse colloids were involved in Cu, Cd and Zn partitioning while only coarse colloids played an important role in Pb partitioning. The determined concentrations were compared to the Environmental Quality Standards (EQS) established by the EU and those determined by the Australia and New Zealand to trigger for 99 and 95% species protection values. The results of this work allow us to highlight gaps in the EQS for which metal concentration thresholds are excessively high or non-existent and should urgently be revised. They also reflect the need to quantify the potentially bioavailable fraction of hazardous trace metals instead of just their total dissolved concentrations. The data support the establishment of environmental quality standards and guidelines based on realistic risk assessment to protect aquatic life and resources and ultimately human health.

A new submersible probe for the in situ detection of nitrate, nitrite, and chloride in seawater is presented. Inline coupling of a desalination unit, an acidification unit, and a sensing flow cell containing all-solid-state membrane electrodes allows for the potentiometric detection of nitrate and nitrite after removal of the key interfering ions in seawater, chloride and hydroxide. Thus, the electrodes exhibited attractive analytical performances for the potentiometric detection of nitrate and nitrite in desalinated and acidified seawater: fast response time ( t95 < 12 s), excellent stability (long-term drifts of <0.5 mV h-1), good reproducibility (calibration parameter deviation of <3%), and satisfactory accuracy (uncertainties <8%Diff compared to reference technique). The desalination cell, which can be repetitively used for about 30 times, may additionally be used as an exhaustive, and therefore calibration-free, electrochemical sensor for chloride and indirect salinity detection. The detection of these two parameters together with nitrate and nitrite may be useful for the correlation of relative changes in macronutrient levels with salinity cycles, which is of special interest in recessed coastal water bodies. The system is capable of autonomous operation during deployment, with routines for repetitive measurements (every 2 h), data storage and management, and computer visualization of the data in real time. In situ temporal profiles observed in the Arcachon Bay (France) showed valuable environmental information concerning tide-dependent cycles of nitrate and chloride levels in the lagoon, which are here observed for the first time using direct in situ measurements. The submersible probe based on membrane electrodes presented herein may facilitate the study of biogeochemical processes occurring in marine ecosystems by the direct monitoring of nitrate and nitrite levels, which are key chemical targets in coastal waters.

OBJECTIVES: to explore clinicians vision on hospital discharge records in order to identify useful elements to foster a more accurate compiling. DESIGN: qualitative research with phenomenological approach. SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: participants were selected through purposive sampling among clinicians of two hospitals located in Sardinia; the sample included 76 people (32 medical directors and 44 doctors in training). MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: identified codes for themes under investigation: vision of accurate compiling, difficulties, and proposals. RESULTS: collected data highlighted two prevailing visions, respectively focused on the importance of an accurate compiling and on the burden of such activity. The accurate compiling is hindered by the lack of motivation and training, by the limits of the registration system and the information technology, by the distortions induced by the prominent role of the hospital discharge records in the evaluation processes. Training, timely updating of the information system accompanied by a proper cross-cultural validation process, improvement of the computer system, and activation of support services could promote more accurate compiling. CONCLUSIONS: the implementation of services, unconnected with evaluation and control processes, dedicated to training and support in the compiling of the hospital discharge records and in the conduction of related epidemiological studies would facilitate the compliance to the compilation. Such services will make tangible the benefits obtainable from this registration system, increasing skills, motivation, ownership, and facilitating greater accuracy in compiling.

Cities are currently engaged through their urban policies in pushing people towards less environmentally impacting mobility modalities: therefore, cycling and walking are strongly promoted, especially by means of new and wider limited traffic and no-cars zones. In this paper, the effectiveness of the new smartphones and apps-based technologies in modifying the mobility behaviors of citizens towards more sustainable choices has been investigated. Specifically, the potential of a smartphone app, directly involving citizens by means of a game rewarding the most sustainable trips, has been tested on a university commuters' group. These latter, starting from their current mobility situation, were challenged by an enhanced scenario characterized by more restrictive and sustainable targets. Promising results have been obtained suggesting that game-based tools could be effectively used as urban policy interventions intended to obtain a more sustainable mobility.

Seawater passive sampling with Polar Organic Chemical Integrative Samplers (POCIS) combined with Gaschromatography-Mass Spectrometry analysis were employed as a tool for screening unknown contaminants in a complex Ligurian marine coastal area. The untargeted approach allowed recognizing different classes of compounds, mainly hydrocarbons from C20 to C30. Besides, two chemicals, deriving from anthropic activities, N-butylbenzenesulfonamide (NBBS) and diphenyl sulfone (DPS), were identified and quantified in all samples. Both analytes showed decreasing concentrations from the more confined site to the outer one. The oceanographic characterization of the area performed with multiparametric probes provided useful information, in agreement with chemical analyses. The presence of NBBS and DPS in the site presenting lower continental inputs demonstrated the usefulness of the integrative sampling approach for temporal and spatial monitoring, especially for low level and/or short-term pollution events that traditional monitoring can fail to detect.

Many phenomena in solid-state physics can be understood in terms of their topological properties. Recently, controlled protocols of quantum walk (QW) are proving to be effective simulators of such phenomena. Here we report the realization of a photonic QW showing both the trivial and the non-trivial topologies associated with chiral symmetry in one-dimensional (1D) periodic systems. We find that the probability distribution moments of the walker position after many steps can be used as direct indicators of the topological quantum transition: while varying a control parameter that defines the system phase, these moments exhibit a slope discontinuity at the transition point. Numerical simulations strongly support the conjecture that these features are general of 1D topological systems. Extending this approach to higher dimensions, different topological classes, and other typologies of quantum phases may offer general instruments for investigating and experimentally detecting quantum transitions in such complex systems.

The "quantum walk" has emerged recently as a paradigmatic process for the dynamic simulation of complex quantum systems, entanglement production and quantum computation. Hitherto, photonic implementations of quantum walks have mainly been based on multipath interferometric schemes in real space. We report the experimental realization of a discrete quantum walk taking place in the orbital angular momentum space of light, both for a single photon and for two simultaneous photons. In contrast to previous implementations, the whole process develops in a single light beam, with no need of interferometers; it requires optical resources scaling linearly with the number of steps; and it allows flexible control of input and output superposition states. Exploiting the latter property, we explored the system band structure in momentum space and the associated spin-orbit topological features by simulating the quantum dynamics of Gaussian wavepackets. Our demonstration introduces a novel versatile photonic platform for quantum simulations.

Understanding the effects of environmental change on ecosystems requires the identification of baselines that may act as reference conditions. However, the continuous change of these references challenges our ability to define the true natural status of ecosystems. The so-called sliding baseline syndrome can be overcome through the analysis of quantitative time series, which are, however, extremely rare. Here we show how combining historical quantitative data with descriptive 'naturalistic' information arranged in a chronological chain allows highlighting long-term trends and can be used to inform present conservation schemes. We analysed the long-term change of a coralligenous reef, a marine habitat endemic to the Mediterranean Sea. The coralligenous assemblages of Mesco Reef (Ligurian Sea, NW Mediterranean) have been studied, although discontinuously, since 1937 thus making available both detailed descriptive information and scanty quantitative data: while the former was useful to understand the natural history of the ecosystem, the analysis of the latter was of paramount importance to provide a formal measure of change over time. Epibenthic assemblages remained comparatively stable until the 1990s, when species replacement, invasion by alien algae, and biotic homogenisation occurred within few years, leading to a new and completely different ecosystem state. The shift experienced by the coralligenous assemblages of Mesco Reef was probably induced by a combination of seawater warming and local human pressures, the latter mainly resulting in increased water turbidity; in turn, cumulative stress may have favoured the establishment of alien species. This study showed that the combined analysis of quantitative and descriptive historical data represent a precious knowledge to understand ecosystem trends over time and provide help to identify baselines for ecological management.

Seamounts and their influence on the surrounding environment are currently being extensively debated but, surprisingly, scant information is available for the Mediterranean area. Furthermore, although the deep Tyrrhenian Sea is characterised by a complex bottom morphology and peculiar hydrodynamic features, which would suggest a variable influence on the benthic domain, few studies have been carried out there, especially for soft-bottom macrofaunal assemblages. In order to fill this gap, the structure of the meio-and macrofaunal assemblages of the Vercelli Seamount and the surrounding deep area (northern Tyrrhenian Sea - western Mediterranean) were studied in relation to environmental features. Sediment was collected with a box-corer from the seamount summit and flanks and at two far-field sites in spring 2009, in order to analyse the metazoan communities, the sediment texture and the sedimentary organic matter. At the summit station, the heterogeneity of the habitat, the shallowness of the site and the higher trophic supply (water column phytopigments and macroalgal detritus, for instance) supported a very rich macrofaunal community, with high abundance, biomass and diversity. In fact, its trophic features resembled those observed in coastal environments next to seagrass meadows. At the flank and far-field stations, sediment heterogeneity and depth especially influenced the meiofaunal distribution. From a trophic point of view, the low content of the valuable sedimentary proteins that was found confirmed the general oligotrophy of the Tyrrhenian Sea, and exerted a limiting influence on the abundance and biomass of the assemblages. In this scenario, the rather refractory sedimentary carbohydrates became a food source for metazoans, which increased their abundance and biomass at the stations where the hydrolytic-enzyme-mediated turnover of carbohydrates was faster, highlighting high lability.
