RESUMO

Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the scientific evidence of dietary intervention, either through diet or supplementation, and its effects on the health of patients with systemic lupus erythematosus. Methods: Literature searches were conducted using Scopus, PubMed, BioMed Central and Science Direct databases. The terms used for the search were diet, nutritional support, nutrition therapy and systemic lupus erythematosus. Results: Eleven studies with interventions related to supplementation of omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin D and turmeric, as well as changes in diet composition, such as low glycaemic index diet were identified. Conclusions: The studies evidenced that omega-3 supplementation reduced inflammation, disease activity, endothelial dysfunction and oxidative stress; vitamin D supplementation increased serum levels, reduced inflammatory and hemostatic markers; turmeric supplementation reduced proteinuria, hematuria and systolic blood pressure; and low glycaemic index diet caused weight loss and reduced fatigue.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To build a model based on cardiometabolic indicators that allow the identification of overweight adolescents at higher risk of subclinical atherosclerotic disease (SAD). METHODS: Cross-sectional study involving 161 adolescents with a body mass index ≥ +1 z-Score, aged 10 to 19 years. Carotid intima-media complex thickness (IMT) was evaluated using ultrasound to assess subclinical atherosclerotic disease. Cardiometabolic indicators evaluated included nutritional status, central adiposity, blood pressure, lipidic profile, glycemic profile, as well as age and sex. Data was presented using measures of central tendency and dispersion, as well as absolute and relative frequency. The relationship between IMT measurement (outcome variable) and other variables (independent variables) was assessed using Pearson or Spearman correlation, followed by multiple regression modeling with Gamma distribution to analyze predictors of IMT. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS and R software, considering a significance level of 5 %. RESULTS: It was observed that 23.7 % had Carotid thickening, and the prevalence of abnormal fasting glucose was the lowest. Age and fasting glucose were identified as predictors of IMT increase, with IMT decreasing with age by approximately 1 % per year and increasing with glucose by around 0.24 % per mg/dL. CONCLUSION: The adolescent at higher risk is younger with higher fasting glycemia levels.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The effects of diet on maternal and child genetic levels have been previously reported. Diet-associated DNA damage, such as the presence of micronuclei (MN), may be related to an increased risk of developing chronic diseases, such as cancer. Such damage is particularly concerning during pregnancy as it can affect the newborn. AIM: This review will aim to summarize the primary evidence of the impact of diet during pregnancy on micronucleus frequency in the maternal-newborn population. METHODS: This protocol was developed based on the Preferred Reporting Items guidelines for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses Protocol. The review was registered with the International Register of Prospective Systematic Reviews on February 17, 2022 (registration number: CRD42022302401). We will use PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, Scopus, Science direct, and Google databases to search for observational studies. This review will include studies that investigate the diet consumed by pregnant women and its effect on the frequency of MN in mothers and newborns without any time or language limitations. For data extraction, researchers will independently review the full text and collect information that characterizes the study and its findings. We will analyze the results by calculating the odds ratio for each type of diet evaluated, accompanied by a 95% confidence interval. We will perform a quantitative synthesis of homogeneous studies to perform a meta-analysis. Micronucleus frequency quantifies the effect and will be presented as the mean and standard deviation or median and interquartile range. EXPECTED RESULTS: This review will aim to identify which dietary patterns during pregnancy may be associated with an increase in the frequency of MN in mothers and their newborns. Understanding the impact of diet on the frequency of MN is essential to deepen studies and to propose strategies that aim to protect the health of the public through food.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is an autoimmune and inflammatory disease that requires treatment with hydroxychloroquine and glucocorticoids. Glucocorticoids are responsible for adverse effects such as increased weight, which can modify the severity and chronicity of autoimmune pathologies. AIM: To summarize scientific evidence regarding the impact of overweight and obesity on disease activity and remission in SLE. METHODS: The protocol was developed according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-analysis Protocol (PRISMA-P) and published in the International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews database (PROSPERO-CRD42021268217). PubMed, Scopus, Embase, and Google Scholar will be searched for observational studies including adult patients with SLE who were overweight and obese or not, that included disease activity or remission as outcomes. The search is planned for May 2023. Three independent authors will select the eligible articles and extract their data. Subsequently, three authors will independently extract data from each included study using an extraction form created by the researchers. Methodological quality analyses will be performed using the modified Newcastle-Ottawa scale. The results will be presented as a narrative synthesis according to the synthesis without a meta-analysis reporting guideline (SWiM). Meta-analysis will be conducted where appropriate using random-effects models. EXPECTED RESULTS: This review will identify the impact of overweight and obesity on the clinical features of SLE, helping clinicians manage disease activity and remission, both important to optimize disease outcomes and patient quality of life.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To identify the risk of falls of older adults in a hospital in the Trairi region in Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil, and to describe the relationship between risk of falls and the sociodemographic characteristics of the participants. METHOD: A descriptive, transversal, and quantitative study conducted in a regional hospital, respecting the ethical principles in force. The Morse Scale was adopted for data collection, which took place in July and August 2018, and adapted with sociodemographic questions. A descriptive and inferential statistical analysis was performed. RESULTS: There were 46 participants in the study, most of whom were women with low education, and the most frequent reasons for hospitalization were surgical treatment and lung disease. More than half had a high risk of falling (54.35%), followed by moderate (32.61%) and low (13.04%). There was an association between high risk of falls, having lung disease as a reason for hospitalization and diabetes as a comorbidity. The high risk of falls was less frequent among older adult patients hospitalized for surgical treatment. CONCLUSION: The high risk of falls was found in more than half of the older adults, which varied according to the reason for hospitalization and comorbidities, being more frequent in those hospitalized for lung disease and in those who had Diabetes.

RESUMO

Most treatments of leishmaniasis require hospitalization and present side effects or parasite resistance; innovations in drug formulation/reposition can overcome these barriers and must be pursued to increase therapeutic alternatives. Therefore, we tested polymyxin B (polB) potential to kill Leishmania amazonensis, adsorbed or not in PBCA nanoparticles (PBCAnp), which could augment polB internalization in infected macrophages. PBCAnps were fabricated by anionic polymerization and analyzed by Dynamic Light Scattering (size, ζ potential), Nanoparticle Tracking Analysis (size/concentration), vertical diffusion cell (release rate), drug incorporation (indirect method, protein determination) and in vitro cell viability. Nanoparticles coated with polB (PBCAnp-polB) presented an adequate size of 261.5 ± 25.9 nm, low PDI and ζ of 1.79 ± 0.17 mV (stable for 45 days, at least). The 50% drug release from PBCAnp-polB was 6-7 times slower than the free polB, which favors a prolonged and desired release profile. Concerning in vitro evaluations, polB alone reduced in vitro amastigote infection of macrophages (10 µg/mL) without complete parasite elimination, even at higher concentrations. This behavior limits its future application to adjuvant leishmanicidal therapy or antimicrobial coating of carriers. The nanocarrier PBCAnp also presented leishmanicidal effect and surpassed polB activity; however, no antimicrobial activity was detected. PolB maintained its activity against E. coli, Pseudomonas and Klebsiella, adding antimicrobial properties to the nanoparticles. Thus, this coated drug delivery system, described for the first time, demonstrated antileishmanial and antimicrobial properties. The bactericidal feature helps with concomitant prevention/treatment of secondary infections that worst ulcers induced by cutaneous L. amazonensis, ultimately ending in disfiguring or disabling lesions.

The aim of this article is to demonstrate the probable relationship between the recurrence of toxoplasmic retinochoroiditis and refractive surgery (LASIK). The case consists in a toxoplasmic retinochoroditis recurrence observed in a 33-year-old patient after a LASIK surgery. Fundoscopy revealed a retinochoroiditis focus in activity in the left eye seventeen days after the surgery, adjacent to an old scar of ocular toxoplasmosis. The authors present findings that reinforce possible causal links between LASIK and the recurrence of toxoplasmic retinochoroiditis.
