RESUMO

AIM: To explore the lived experience of advanced preparation nurses (APNs) who are mothers (APN-mothers) as they seek care in the Emergency Department for a child with a chronic disease. DESIGN: Qualitative, Narrative Inquiry. METHODS: Narrative Inquiry was used to examine critical self-reflections of four (n = 4) APN-mothers. Directed by a question guide, participants engaged in the Narrative Reflective Process through metaphoric and artistic means. RESULTS: Participants identified salient challenges associated with their experiences. Narrative threads that emerged include feelings around being discovered, unfair expectations by healthcare providers, feelings of guilt and the tension from competing roles: APN and mother. CONCLUSION: APN-mothers represent a unique population with enhanced knowledge, skills and judgement; however, they indicate that there is insufficient communication and interprofessional collaboration between parents and Emergency Department staff. Further research is needed to foster and improve therapeutic relationships between APN-mothers and healthcare providers. IMPLICATIONS FOR THE PROFESSION AND/OR PATIENT CARE: Findings can inform the development of family centred care guidelines for healthcare professional parents and their children. IMPACT: This study explores the experiences of an understudied population. This research will impact APN-mothers, healthcare professionals in the Emergency Department as well as nursing students and researchers. REPORTING METHOD: EQUATOR guidelines and SRQR reporting method used. PATIENT OR PUBLIC CONTRIBUTION: APN-mothers, caregivers and support persons of children with chronic disease enacted investigator-participant roles and were involved in each step of the study process. In addition, some patients (participants' children with chronic diseases) were included in data collected.

AIM: The aim of this study was to analyze nursing student level of knowledge and understanding of current experiences of Indigenous people within the Canadian health care system to identify curricular gaps that need to be addressed. BACKGROUND: In response to the 2015 Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada, nursing schools have begun incorporating Indigenous health content into curricula. However, few studies about the implementation and effectiveness of this education exist. METHOD: Students wrote a reflection and engaged with colleagues' reflections after watching a video from the Aboriginal Peoples Television Network. Fifteen reflections were selected using systematic, random sampling to undergo thematic analysis. RESULTS: Two themes were identified: 1) students' understanding of barriers Indigenous populations face when accessing the health care system and 2) students' perceptions of strategies to ensure culturally safe care for Indigenous populations. CONCLUSION: Analysis of students' learning through a reflection activity can improve the Indigenous health content curriculum.

BACKGROUND: The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) across different sectors, notably healthcare, is on the rise. However, a thorough exploration of AI's incorporation into nursing research, as well as its advantages and obstacles, is still lacking. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this scoping review was to map the roles, benefits, challenges, and potentials for the future development and use of AI in the context of nursing research. METHODS: An exhaustive search was conducted across seven databases: MEDLINE, PsycINFO, SCOPUS, Web of Science, CINAHL, Google Scholar, and ProQuest. Articles were additionally identified through manual examination of reference lists of the articles that were included in the study. The search criteria were restricted to articles published in English between 2010 and 2023. The Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) approach for scoping reviews and the PRISMA-ScR guidelines guided the processes of source selection, data extraction, and data presentation. RESULTS: Twenty articles met the inclusion criteria, covering topics from ethical considerations to methodological issues and AI's capabilities in data analysis and predictive modeling. CONCLUSION: The review identified both the potentials and complexities of integrating AI into nursing research. Ethical and legal considerations warrant a coordinated approach from multiple stakeholders. IMPLICATION: The findings emphasized AI's potential to revolutionize nursing research, underscoring the need for ethical guidelines, equitable access, and AI literacy training to ensure its responsible and inclusive use.

ABSTRACT: In nursing academia, educators are faced with the longstanding challenge of bridging the theory-practice gap. In a second-year nursing theory course, students were introduced to poetry on a biweekly basis, written by their educator in response to student needs in understanding complex theoretical and conceptual nursing topics. Through anecdotal evidence from clinical instructors and students, the sharing of poetry and subsequent discussions helped students to develop and enhance their critical thinking and clinical judgment, reasoning, and decision-making skills. This transformative pedagogical approach offers an alternative teaching strategy that can provide the basis for meaningful discussion and bridge the theory-practice gap.

Health care providers are increasingly asked to work in interprofessional teams to enhance the care provided to and health outcomes of their patients. However, there is little evidence on how to include patients in meaningful roles on these teams to support their health monitoring and management. The purpose of this study was to gain insight into roles that patients can assume within their health care teams and to understand the conditions and processes required for patient roles to be enacted. Ten patients and 10 health care providers from two Family Health Teams in Southwestern Ontario, Canada, participated in individual interviews to learn about their perspectives on patient roles in teams. Data collection and analysis strategies generated theoretical concepts, and member-checking interviews provided final feedback on the framework. This study resulted in a comprehensive framework of two roles and the conditions and processes required for patient-health care provider interactions within primary care interprofessional teams. Further researchers could use this framework to build knowledge of patient roles in interprofessional teams across varying health care settings and patient populations.

BACKGROUND: The process of refugee resettlement and integration into new communities is a complex and multifaceted challenge, not only for the refugees themselves but also for the host families involved in homestay housing arrangements. While these homestay arrangements are designed to facilitate smoother transitions and enhance the well-being of refugees, the nuanced dynamics of these interactions and their overall impact on both refugees and their host families remain underexplored. Understanding the experiences of refugees and their host families is vital for effective refugee settlement, integration, and well-being. However, the intricacies of homestay refugee hosting, their interactions with host families, and the impact on their well-being are still unclear and ambiguous. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this scoping review is to examine the breadth of literature on the experiences of refugees living in homestay arrangements with their host families. This review seeks to understand how these dynamics influence refugee well-being, including their integration, social connections, and mental health. Additionally, this scoping review aims to synthesize existing literature on homestay hosting dynamics, focusing on the experiences of refugees and their host families, to identify gaps in knowledge and suggest areas for future research. METHODS: This scoping review follows Joanna Briggs Institute methodology and will search databases such as CINAHL, SOCIndex, MEDLINE through EBSCO; APA PsycInfo, Scopus through OVID; and Web of Science Core Collection, ProQuest Dissertations, and Theses, and SciELO Citation Index, focusing on literature from 2011 onward, in English, in relation to refugee groups in different host countries, including all types of literature. Literature will be screened by 2 independent reviewers, with disagreements resolved by consensus or a third reviewer. A custom data extraction tool will be created by the research team. RESULTS: The results will be organized in tables or diagrams, accompanied by a narrative overview, emphasizing the main synthesized findings related to the dynamics of homestay hosting with host families and refugee well-being. No critical appraisal will be conducted. This scoping review is expected to identify research gaps that will inform the development of homestay refugee hosting models, policies, and practices. It will also offer insights into best practices and policy recommendations to improve homestay hosting programs, ultimately contributing to more effective refugee settlement and integration strategies. CONCLUSIONS: Understanding the intricate dynamics of homestay hosting arrangements is crucial for developing policies and programs that support the well-being of refugees and the families that host them. This scoping review will shed light on the current knowledge landscape, identify research gaps, and suggest ways to enhance the homestay hosting experience for all parties involved. Through this work, we aim to contribute to the development of more inclusive, supportive, and effective approaches to refugee hosting, resettlement, and integration. Patient-partners are invaluable in health professions' education. Sharing their lived experiences with prospective and current healthcare providers can provide an opportunity for these participants to hone their patient-centric skills. However, sharing stories publicly is a vulnerable role and may feel emotionally risky for patient-partners. Using reflective dialogue, this manuscript outlines recommendations through the Sender-Receiver Model of Communication for Patient-Partners encounters when working with patient-partners in health professions' education. These recommendations include recognizing that: Patient-partners need to consider if they are ready to share their story. Some stories are wounds requiring further healing; other stories are scars fully processed by patient-partners and ready to be shared publicly.The audience should differentiate between questions that can promote critical thinking versus feel like a "personal attack." Audiences should recognize vulnerability patient-partners may experience in sharing their stories and engage accordingly.Pre-session and post-session debriefs are important. Shared stories may elicit intense emotions from patient-partners and audiences. Both groups should be given an opportunity to process and work through emotions.

Health professionals and care partners of persons living with dementia have expressed that learning needs related to dementia care are a priority. There are currently a variety of training programs available in Ontario (Canada) to address aspects of dementia care, but no commonly accepted description of the core knowledge, skills, and abilities, (i.e., competencies) that should underpin dementia-related training and education in the province. The aim of this study was to review current evidence to inform the later development of competency statements describing the knowledge, skills and actions required for dementia care among care providers ranging from laypersons to health professionals. We also sought to validate existing dementia care principles and align new concepts to provide a useful organizing framework for future competency development. We distinguished between micro-, meso- and macro-level concepts to clarify the competencies required by individuals situated in different locations across the healthcare system, linking competency development in dementia care to broader system transformation. This review precedes the co-development of a holistic competency framework to guide approaches to dementia care training in Ontario.

BACKGROUND: This article reports an evaluative replication study, including a workshop inspired by Paulo Freire's critical pedagogy. Purpose: Assess how the nursing students' participation in critiquing Canadian empirical evidence on men's health literacy provokes new perceptions; explore students' intentions of incorporating the aforementioned contents into their professional practice; and test students' skills to formulate a hypothetical short action plan about men's health literacy. METHODS: A qualitative evaluation study inspired by the qualitative program evaluation approach. The setting was a university-based Canadian undergraduate nursing program located in a major metropolitan city. Seventeen undergraduate students (representing 3.65% of year 4 student population) composed the sample. The educational intervention was two workshops (6 h duration; February 2017) including a lecture about men's health literacy with video presentations, class discussions and group work using Freire's method of reflection and discussion for awareness awakening. Hypothetical health literacy promotion was the key outcome. All interactions were digitally audiorecorded, verbatim transcribed and submitted to thematic analysis having as themes: Perspectives of awareness and knowledge expansion, and New personal-professional assets. RESULTS: Students were able to relate new knowledge with their own experiences in the classroom or in the practicum. Application of new knowledge was related to students' social circles and reported familiar health matters. Cultural and community life shaped knowledge expansion and references to men's behaviors. CONCLUSIONS: Mobilization of personal knowledge awoke students' awareness about gaps in the nursing curriculum and the paucity of experiences in clinical placements relating to men's health literacy.

PURPOSE: This paper aims to clarify the concept of reflective practice in nursing by using Rodgers' evolutionary method of concept analysis. DATA SOURCES: Literature and references on the concept of reflective practice were obtained from two databases: Scopus and Nursing and Allied health database. Peer-reviewed articles published in English language between 2011-2021 that included the terms 'reflection' and/or 'reflective practice' in the title were selected. Seminal pieces of work were also considered in this analysis. A total of 23 works were included. Most of the selected works addressed the concept of reflective practice in nursing education or nursing practice. DATA SYNTHESIS: The data analysis integrated the stages identified in Rodgers' method of concept analysis to analyze the concept of reflective practice. Analysis of selected works provided an understanding of common surrogates, antecedents, attributes, and consequences of the concept of reflective practice. CONCLUSIONS: Reflective practice is a cognitive skill that demands conscious effort to look at a situation with an awareness of own beliefs, values, and practice enabling nurses to learn from experiences, incorporate that learning in improving patient care outcomes. It also leads to knowledge development in nursing. Considering the current circumstances of the COVID-19 pandemic, this paper identifies the need for nurses to go beyond reflection-on-action and also include reflection-in-action and reflection-for-action as part of their practice. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING PRACTICE: This analysis identifies the need for future nursing researchers to develop reflective models or strategies that promote reflection among nurses and nursing students before, during, and after the clinical experiences.

ABSTRACT Objective: to analyze the distinct features, incongruencies, and harmony between the features of Canadian-Brazilian community health nursing as well their practices. Method: ethnographic research conducted in primary healthcare clinics (city of João Pessoa, Brazil). Data collection unfolded from July to September 2018 and included direct, unstructured participant observation of collective social and professional-clientele interactions, with a structured personal digital log and reports of the researcher's observations, as well as social immersion in community settings. The fieldwork log was thematically analyzed to build the meaning of the comparative nursing practice. Results: analysis of observations' reports identified challenges and opportunities to promote sustainable changes and create a supportive environment. Nurses' competencies to promote health are in consonance with conceptual, political, and ethical sounding perspectives. Among the distinctive practices observed was that in Brazil, the prescribing practice has been well-established because legally the registered nurses are allowed to prescribe within the primary healthcare programs. In Canada, registered nurses have been granted authority to do so, upon receipt of specific training and under certain scope of advanced practice. Thematic analysis revealed uniqueness of the grasped information, incongruence between community health nursing practices and harmony between contextual practices of Brazil-Canada community health nursing composed the empirical evidence. Conclusions: this research uncovered the compatibility between Canadian and Brazilian practice as well as intricate features of Brazilian community health nurses. Unquestionably, the evidence sums up to the consolidation of the well-established Brazil-Canada cooperation in the field of primary health care. This evidence addresses the political perspective of cooperation for global health.


RESUMEN Objetivo: analizar las características distintivas, incongruencias y armonía entre las características de los enfermeros de salud comunitaria canadiense-brasileños y sus prácticas. Método: estudio etnográfico realizado en centros de atención primaria (ciudad de João Pessoa, Brasil). La recolección de datos se desarrolló de julio a septiembre de 2018 e incluyó la observación participante directa y no estructurada de las interacciones sociales colectivas y profesional-clientela, con un registro digital personal estructurado e informes de las observaciones del investigador, así como la inmersión social en entornos comunitarios. El registro de trabajo de campo se analizó temáticamente para construir el significado de la práctica de enfermería comparada. Resultados: el análisis de los informes de observaciones identificó desafíos y oportunidades para promover cambios sostenibles y crear un entorno de apoyo. Las competencias de los enfermeros para promover la salud están en consonancia con las perspectivas conceptuales, políticas y éticas. Entre las prácticas distintivas observadas, la práctica de prescripción ha sido bien establecida en Brasil porque legalmente las enfermeras están autorizadas a prescribir dentro de los programas de atención primaria de salud. En Canadá, a las enfermeras se les ha otorgado autoridad para hacerlo al recibir capacitación específica y bajo cierto alcance de práctica avanzada. El análisis temático reveló singularidad de la información captada, incongruencia entre las prácticas de enfermería en salud comunitaria y armonía entre las prácticas contextuales de enfermería en salud comunitaria Brasil-Canadá que compusieron la evidencia empírica. Conclusiones: esta investigación demostró que existe compatibilidad entre las prácticas canadiense y brasileña, así como las características de la enfermería comunitaria brasileña. Incuestionablemente, la evidencia resume la consolidación de la cooperación bien establecida entre Brasil y Canadá en el campo de la salud primaria. Esta evidencia aborda la perspectiva política de la cooperación para la salud global.

Houve registro digital estruturado de relatos das observações de campo pela pesquisadora, assim como imersão social em ambientes comunitários. O diário de campo foi analisado tematicamente para construir o significado da prática comparativa de Enfermagem. Resultados: a análise dos relatos das observações identificou desafios e oportunidades para promover mudanças sustentáveis e criar um ambiente de apoio. As competências dos enfermeiros para a promoção da saúde estão em consonância com perspectivas conceituais, políticas e éticas. Entre as práticas diferenciadas observadas destaca-se que, no Brasil, a prática de prescrição tem sido bem estabelecida, pois, legalmente, os enfermeiros estão autorizados a prescrever dentro dos programas de atenção primária à saúde. No Canadá, os enfermeiros receberam autorização para fazê-lo, após um treinamento específico e sob certo escopo da prática avançada. A análise temática revelou singularidades nas informações apreendidas, incongruência entre as práticas de Enfermagem de saúde comunitária Brasil-Canadá e harmonia entre tais práticas contextuais que compuseram as evidências empíricas. Conclusões: esta pesquisa revelou a compatibilidade entre a prática canadense e brasileira, assim como características próprias dos enfermeiros brasileiros nessa prática. Inquestionavelmente, as evidências resumem-se à consolidação da bem estabelecida cooperação Brasil-Canadá no campo da atenção primária à saúde. Essas evidências abordam a perspectiva política de cooperação para a saúde global.

In this paper we report reflections about the scholarly mentoring experiences of undergraduate nursing students (mentees) and faculty members (mentors) involved in an intellectual partnership at a Canadian university. The paper specifically recounts the impacts of the transformative process experienced by 18 mentees and three mentors, based on their in-depth written critical reflections. In this collaborative initiative, the constructivist framework of Shor and Freire, and Mezirow's Transformative Learning Theory, served as foundations for all interactions between mentees and mentors, and guided the analysis and interpretation of their written self-reflections. Mentees and mentors were motivated by complementary goals for the intellectual relationships. Their combined contexts, self-reflective, critical dialogue, shared assumptions and ideas worked to ignite a critical awareness of their potential and self in their professional world. Sharing new ways of thinking and points of view stimulated their transformation on various levels -emotional, cognitive, and spiritual.

BACKGROUND: Interprofessional education and practice have been gaining recognition during the past decade. However, little has been written on person-centered care (PCC) within interprofessional practice and how it could be taught to interprofessional learners. METHOD: A key element of PCC is therapeutic communication. Consequently, a group of interprofessional faculty innovated a graduate-level elective course on advanced therapeutic communication where interprofessional learners together explore PCC within interprofessional care. The course curriculum is underpinned by mindfulness in education, nonviolent communication, and reflective writing. Various teaching- learning strategies, including creative self-expression, are also used. RESULTS: The created competencies and conceptual framework may be used by other educators in creating a similar interprofessional course. Interprofessional learners gained a deeper and broader understanding of PCC in interprofessional care. CONCLUSION: On the basis of this undertaking, the faculty gained a deeper appreciation for interprofessional collaboration in the development of innovative educational methodologies that advance interprofessional teamwork in education and professional practice. BACKGROUND: Patients' illness stories are valuable information that supports person-centred care across the illness trajectory. AIMS: To learn how older South Asian immigrant women experience living with heart illness long after discharge from hospital. METHOD: We used narrative inquiry, a personal experience method that explores and interprets lived and told stories through the three dimensions of experience. DESIGN: Four participants, over the age of sixty, living with heart illness for over ten years, were invited to engage in narrative interview and Narrative Reflective Process. OUTCOMES: Giving patients voice, allows caregivers insight into the human experience of illness beyond hospitalization. Considering the increased migration of people around the globe, this knowledge is significant in provision of person-centred care. IMPLICATIONS: Person-centred care does not end with the hospitalization and outpatient clinics. Inter-disciplinary teams need to reconsider the trajectory of chronic illnesses and the care required throughout, especially for marginalized populations.
