RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The association between adverse working conditions and mental disorders is well established. In addition to psychopathological symptoms, this study aimed at investigating anger and personality traits in a clinical sample of subjects referring negative interpersonal experiences in workplaces. METHODS: 1676 workers attending a Centre for Occupational Stress in Milan (from 2014 to 2016) were administered an assessment protocol including SCL-90 for general psychopathology, STAXI for anger intensity and expression, and MMPI-2 for personality traits. A qualitative checklist was used to collect negative experiences in workplaces. RESULTS: Patients reported they were exposed to "threats to the task or the professional career" more than to "attacks to the person". Over 80% scored above the cutoff in all the subscales of the SCL-90, with highest scores in Depression, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, Anxiety, Somatization and Paranoia. 60% scored above the 90th percentile in the AX/in subscale, showing intense anger feelings that they mostly suppress. Abnormal elevations at the MMPI scales of Hypochondria, Depression, Hysteria, and Paranoia were found in over 50% of the sample. Women reported higher psychological difficulties and internalized anger than men. Anger towards objects and people, instead, was more common in males. No differences were observed by work sector or employment status. CONCLUSIONS: In addition to severe psychological difficulties, individuals reporting negative interpersonal experiences in workplaces have high levels of internalized anger and a distinctive profile of personality traits. While a deeper investigation is needed, anger expression should be considered in future treatment programs.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: In adults, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and bipolar disorder (BD) have certain overlapping symptoms, which can lead to uncertainty regarding the boundaries of the two disorders. Despite evidence of cognitive impairments in both disorders separately, such as in attentional and inhibitory processes, data on direct comparisons across ADHD and BD on cognitive-neurophysiological measures are as yet limited. METHOD: We directly compared cognitive performance and event-related potential measures from a cued continuous performance test in 20 women with ADHD, 20 women with BD (currently euthymic) and 20 control women. RESULTS: The NoGo-N2 was attenuated in women with BD, reflecting reduced conflict monitoring, compared with women with ADHD and controls (both p < 0.05). Both ADHD and BD groups showed a reduced NoGo-P3, reflecting inhibitory control, compared with controls (both p < 0.05). In addition, the contingent negative variation was significantly reduced in the ADHD group (p = 0.05), with a trend in the BD group (p = 0.07), compared with controls. CONCLUSIONS: These findings indicate potential disorder-specific (conflict monitoring) and overlapping (inhibitory control, and potentially response preparation) neurophysiological impairments in women with ADHD and women with BD. The identified neurophysiological parameters further our understanding of neurophysiological impairments in women with ADHD and BD, and are candidate biomarkers that may aid in the identification of the diagnostic boundaries of the two disorders.

RESUMO

A report is given on the spasmolytic effect of two benzisothiazolcarboxyamides (compound A and compound B). These drugs were able to inhibit the stimulant action of histamine on human isolated myometrium. The potency of the two compounds exceeded by ten times that of ritodrine (a beta adrenergic stimulant), the efficacy was slightly higher (20-30%) than that of papaverine. This pharmacological effect is discussed on the light of the spectrum of activites of the benzisothiazolcarboxyamidic compounds.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To analyze synovial fluid (SF) for the presence of Neisseria gonorrhoeae DNA using the polymerase chain reaction (PCR). METHODS: We used a modified, nested PCR to detect the presence of N gonorrhoeae DNA in 41 samples of SF obtained from 10 patients with clinical gonococcal arthritis whose SF samples were sterile by culture and from 27 controls, including 11 patients with Reiter's syndrome. Results obtained using this method were compared with those obtained using the GEN-PROBE system, an RNA-DNA hybridization technique. RESULTS: With nested PCR, N gonorrhoeae DNA was detected in 11 of 14 SF samples obtained from patients with culture-negative clinical gonococcal arthritis but in none of the 11 SF samples from Reiter's syndrome patients. The specificity of this technique was 96.4%, with a sensitivity of 78.6%. The rate of false-positive results was 3.6%. The GEN-PROBE technique was unable to detect N gonorrhoeae ribosomal RNA in any of the samples. CONCLUSION: These findings demonstrate the potential utility of the PCR in confirming the clinical diagnosis of gonococcal arthritis as well as providing insight into the pathogenesis of this disorder in patients whose SF are sterile by standard culture techniques. PCR may also prove helpful in differentiating N gonorrhoeae arthritis from acute Reiter's syndrome.
