RESUMO

The inconsistent relation between word frequency and free recall performance (sometimes a positive one, sometimes a negative one, and sometimes no relation) and the non-monotonic relation found between the two cannot all be explained by current theories. We propose a theoretical framework that can explain all extant results. Based on an ecological psychology analysis of the free recall situation in terms of environmental and informational resources available to the participants, we propose that because participants' cognitive system has been shaped by their native language, free recall performance is best understood as the end result of relational properties that preexist the experimental situation and of the way the words from the experimental list interact with those. In addition to this, we borrow from predictive coding theory the idea that the brain constantly predicts "what is coming next" so that it is mainly prediction errors that will propagate information forward. Our ecological psychology analysis indicates there will be "prediction errors" because the word frequency distribution in an experimental word list is inevitably different from the particular Zipf's law distribution of the words in the language that shaped participants' brains. We further propose the particular distributional discrepancies inherent to a given word list will trigger, as a function of the words that are included in the list, their order, and of the words that are absent from the list, a surprisal signal in the brain, something that is isomorphic to the concept of Bayesian surprise. The precise moment when Bayesian surprise is triggered will determine to what word of the list that Bayesian surprise will be associated with, and the word the Bayesian surprise will be associated with will benefit from it and become more memorable as a direct function of the magnitude of the surprisal. Two experiments are presented that show a proxy of Bayesian surprise explains the free recall performance and that no effect of word frequency is found above and beyond the effect of that proxy variable. We then discuss how our view can account for all data extant in the literature on the effect of word frequency on free recall.

No vaccine against infection by SARS-CoV-2 yet exists. Treatment by hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) medication, among others, has been proposed. However, prophylactic HCQ medication has been little evaluated. We propose to use data from patients with rheumatic diseases (RA, SLR) who have been chronically taking HCQ medication since before the COVID-19 outbreak (hereafter: HCQpa), in order to evaluate the potential of HCQ for preventing infection with SARS-CoV-2. This can be achieved with relative ease by considering whether COVID-19 prevalence is significantly lower in HCQpa than in the general population (i.e., all people that are not HCQpa). Even if COVID-19 prevalence is truly significantly lower in HCQpa, some HCQpa may still present with COVID-19 (lower prevalence does not mean a prevalence of zero). However, given a value for COVID-19 prevalence in the general population and a number of available HCQpa, one may compute the maximum number of HCQpa for that total number of HCQpa considered that can have COVID-19 in order to still be able to conclude a lower COVID-19 prevalence in HCQpa (i.e., if there is one more case of COVID-19 than that maximum number, the COVID-19 prevalence in the HCQpa cannot be said to be lower than in the general population). Because the COVID-19 prevalence in the general population is not known with precision, we will consider different general population prevalence values. Among these contemplated prevalence values, one is derived from the official total number of confirmed cases, others by computing the total number of cases from the number of fatal COVID-19 cases so far and considering different case fatality rates per total cases. Our analyses show that systematic testing for COVID-19 in as few as 5,000 HCQpa is all that is needed for a test of whether HCQ has a prophylactic action against COVID-19, even for a COVID-19 prevalence value as low as 250 per 100,000, provided that test sensitivity is at least equal to its specificity. For higher COVID-19 prevalence values, the number of HCQpa needed is even lower.

Deep brain stimulation of the subthalamic nucleus (DBS) is a widely used surgical technique to suppress motor symptoms in Parkinson's disease (PD), and as such improves patients' quality of life. However, DBS may produce emotional disorders such as a reduced ability to recognize emotional facial expressions (EFE). Previous studies have not considered the fact that DBS and l-dopa medication can have differential, common, or complementary consequences on EFE processing. A thorough way of investigating the effect of DBS and l-dopa medication in greater detail is to compare patients' performances after surgery, with the two therapies either being administered ('on') or not administered ('off'). We therefore used a four-condition (l-dopa 'on'/DBS 'on', l-dopa 'on'/DBS 'off', l-dopa 'off'/DBS 'on', and l-dopa 'off'/DBS 'off') EFE recognition paradigm and compared implanted PD patients to healthy controls. The results confirmed those of previous studies, yielding a significant impairment in the detection of some facial expressions relative to controls. Disgust recognition was impaired when patients were 'off' l-dopa and 'on' DBS, and fear recognition impaired when 'off' of both therapies. More interestingly, the combined effect of both DBS and l-dopa administration seems much more beneficial for EFE recognition than the separate administration of each individual therapy. We discuss the implications of these findings in the light of the inverted U curve function that describes the differential effects of dopamine level on the right orbitofrontal cortex (OFC). We propose that, while l-dopa could "overdose" in dopamine the ventral stream of the OFC, DBS would compensate for this over-activation by decreasing OFC activity, thereby restoring the necessary OFC-amygdala interaction. Another finding is that, when collapsing over all treatment conditions, PD patients recognized more neutral faces than the matched controls, a result that concurs with embodiment theories.

Many theories of contingency learning assume (either explicitly or implicitly) that predicting whether an outcome will occur should be easier than making a causal judgment. Previous research suggests that outcome predictions would depart from normative standards less often than causal judgments, which is consistent with the idea that the latter are based on more numerous and complex processes. However, only indirect evidence exists for this view. The experiment presented here specifically addresses this issue by allowing for a fair comparison of causal judgments and outcome predictions, both collected at the same stage with identical rating scales. Cue density, a parameter known to affect judgments, is manipulated in a contingency learning paradigm. The results show that, if anything, the cue-density bias is stronger in outcome predictions than in causal judgments. These results contradict key assumptions of many influential theories of contingency learning.

This research shows that the motivation to posses a desired characteristic (or to avoid an undesired one) results in self-perceptions that guide people's use of base rate in the Lawyer-Engineer problem (Kahneman & Tversky, 1973). In four studies, participants induced to believe (or recall, Exp. 2) that a rational cognitive style is success-conducive (or an intuitive cognitive style failure-conducive) subsequently viewed themselves as more rational and relied more on base rate in their probability estimates than those induced to believe that a rational cognitive style is failure-conducive (or an intuitive cognitive style success-conducive). These findings show that the desired self had an influence on reasoning in the self-unrelated lawyer-engineer task, since the use of base rates was mediated by changes in participants' perceptions of their own rationality. These findings therefore show that the desired self, through the working self-concept that it entails, constitutes another factor influencing people's use of distinct modes of reasoning.

Least squares analyses (e.g., ANOVAs, linear regressions) of hierarchical data leads to Type-I error rates that depart severely from the nominal Type-I error rate assumed. Thus, when least squares methods are used to analyze hierarchical data coming from designs in which some groups are assigned to the treatment condition, and others to the control condition (i.e., the widely used "groups nested under treatment" experimental design), the Type-I error rate is seriously inflated, leading too often to the incorrect rejection of the null hypothesis (i.e., the incorrect conclusion of an effect of the treatment). To highlight the severity of the problem, we present simulations showing how the Type-I error rate is affected under different conditions of intraclass correlation and sample size. For all simulations the Type-I error rate after application of the popular Kish (1965) correction is also considered, and the limitations of this correction technique discussed. We conclude with suggestions on how one should collect and analyze data bearing a hierarchical structure.

While there is growing evidence that some dyslexic children suffer from a deficit in simultaneously processing multiple visually displayed elements, the precise nature of the deficit remains largely unclear. The aim of the present study is to investigate possible cognitive impairments at the source of this deficit in dyslexic children. The visual processing of simultaneously presented letters was thus thoroughly assessed in two dyslexic children by means of a task that requires the report of briefly presented multi-letters arrays. A computational model of the attentional involvement in multi-object recognition (Bundesen, 1990, 1998) served as framework for analysing the data. By combining psychophysical measurements with computational modelling, we demonstrated that the visual processing deficit of simultaneously displayed letters, observed in the two dyslexic individuals reported in the current study, stems from at least two distinct cognitive sources: a reduction of the rate of-letter-information uptake, and a limitation of the maximal number of elements extracted from a brief visual display and stored in visual short-term memory. Possible relations between these impairments and learning to read proficiently are discussed.
