RESUMO

There is little data regarding the impact of renin-angiotensin system (RAS) gene polymorphisms on tuberculosis. The current study designed to survey the possible association between RAS polymorphisms and the risk of pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) in a sample of the southeast Iranian population. This case-control study was done on 170 PTB patients and 170 healthy subjects. The AGT rs699 C>T, ACE rs4341 C>G and AT1R rs5186 C>A variants were genotyped using polymerase chain reaction restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) and ACE rs4646994 (287bp I/D) variant by PCR method. Regarding AT1R rs5186 A>C polymorphism, the findings revealed that AC genotype and C allele significantly decreased the risk of PTB (OR=0.39, 95% CI=0.22-0.67, p=0.001, and OR=0.53, 95% CI=0.25-0.72, p=0.002, C vs. A, respectively). The TC genotype and C allele of AGT rs699 T>C significantly associated with decreased the risk of PTB (OR=0.45, 95% CI=0.28-0.74, p=0.002, TC vs. TT and OR=0.51, 95% CI=0.32-0.80, p=0.005, C vs. T, respectively). The ID genotype of ACE 287bp I/D significantly increased the risk of PTB (OR=1.88, 95% CI=1.12-3.17, p=0.017). Our finding did not support an association between ACE rs4341 C>G variant and the risk of PTB. In summary, the findings revealed an association between AT1R rs5186 A>C, AGT rs699 T>C and ACE 287bp I/D polymorphisms and the risk of PTB in a sample of the southeast Iranian population. Further investigation with higher sample sizes and diverse ethnicities are required to confirm our findings.

Algal blooms bring massive amounts of algal organic matter (AOM) into eutrophic lakes, which influences microbial methylmercury (MeHg) production. However, because of the complexity of AOM and its dynamic changes during algal decomposition, the relationship between AOM and microbial Hg methylators remains poorly understood, which hinders predicting MeHg production and its bioaccumulation in eutrophic shallow lakes. To address that, we explored the impacts of AOM on microbial Hg methylators and MeHg production by characterizing dissolved organic matter with Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FTICR-MS) and three-dimensional excitation-emission matrix (3D-EEM) fluorescence spectroscopy and quantifying the microbial Hg methylation gene hgcA. We first reveal that the predominance of methanogens, facilitated by eutrophication-induced carbon input, could drive MeHg production in lake water. Specifically, bioavailable components of AOM (i.e., CHONs such as aromatic proteins and soluble microbial byproduct-like materials) increased the abundances (Archaea-hgcA gene: 438-2240% higher) and activities (net CH4 production: 16.0-44.4% higher) of Archaea (e.g., methanogens). These in turn led to enhanced dissolved MeHg levels (24.3-15,918% higher) for three major eutrophic shallow lakes in China. Nevertheless, our model results indicate that AOM-facilitated MeHg production could be offset by AOM-induced MeHg biodilution under eutrophication. Our study would help reduce uncertainties in predicting MeHg production, providing a basis for mitigating the MeHg risk in eutrophic lakes.

Heavy metals bioremediation by medicinal plants is an important research issue, which has yet to be investigated. Matricaria chamomilla accumulation of soil cadmium (Cd, 0, 10 and 40 mg/kg) and lead (Pb, 0, 60 and 180 mg/kg) affecting plant biochemical properties L. at different growth stages in the greenhouse and field was investigated. The 10-kg experimental pots (located in the greenhouse and field with 80% of field capacity moisture) were filled with the treated soils, and were planted with M. chamomilla L. seeds (three replicates). Plants were sampled to determine their biochemical properties including Cd and Pb contents, pigments, proline (Pro), leaf relative water (LRW), lipid peroxidation (LX), and superoxide dismutase (SOD, EC 1.15. 1.1), and catalase (CAT, EC 1.11.1.6) activities. Soil final concentration of Cd and Pb was also determined. Heavy metal stress significantly decreased plant pigment contents; however, it significantly increased plant PRO, LRW, LX and SOD, and not CAT. Heavy metal, growth stage, growth location, and their interactions significantly affected plant heavy metal concentrations. Interestingly, although significantly higher concentration of Cd was observed in plant aerial part under greenhouse conditions, plant roots had significantly higher concentrations of Cd under field conditions, and it was reverse for Pb. Increased concentration of Cd and Pb significantly enhanced plant Pro content and the highest one was resulted by Pb3 (913.46 mg/g fresh weight) significantly higher than other treatments including Cd3 (595.34 mg/g fresh weight). M. chamomilla is a suitable species for the bioremediation of soils polluted with Cd and Pb.

Understanding the complexity and feedbacks among food, energy, and water (FEW) systems is key to making informed decisions about sustainable development. This paper presents qualitative representation and quantitative system dynamics simulation of the water resources system in the Qazvin Plain, Iran, taking into account the energy intensity of water supply and interconnected water use sectors (e.g., urban, industrial, and agricultural). Qazvin Plain faces water resources challenges that are common to arid/semi-arid areas, including frequent droughts, declining surface water and groundwater, and increased urban and agricultural water demand. A system dynamics model is developed using historical data (2006-2016) to investigate the effects of anticipated dynamics of integrated water and energy sectors in the next two decades. The results of policy scenarios (2020-2039) demonstrate that the continuation of the existing management policies will cause severe damage to the water and energy sectors, pushing the system towards water resources limits to growth. An annual groundwater table decline of nearly 1 m is anticipated, indicating significant overshoot of the plain's natural recharge capacity, which may lead to the depletion of recoverable groundwater in the plain within the next three decades. The groundwater table decline will cause energy consumption of water supply to increase by about 32% (i.e., 380 GWh) to maintain irrigated agriculture. It is critical to implement a combination of water demand and supply management policies (e.g., net agricultural water savings and recycling treated wastewater) to delay the problem of water limits to growth in the region.

The seed yield and healthy oil in sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.), as an important industrial crop, decrease under stress. There is not much investigation, to our knowledge, on the use of potassium fertilization, a regulator of plant water potential, affecting the biochemical properties and seed components of sunflower under drought stress. Accordingly, such parameters were investigated in a split-split plot field experiment, conducted in two different field sites (Natanz (Nt) and Eghlid (Eg), Iran), using potassium fertilization (subplots, 0, 150 and 300 kg/ha) and six drought levels (main plots) in four replicates. Although stress significantly affected sunflower biochemical properties and seed components in the two fields, the effects of stress were more pronounced in the Eg site (significant interaction of field and drought). The plant alleviated the stress by increasing the proline, oleic and linoleic acid concentrations, however, potassium fertilization also increased plant tolerance further under stress by enhancing such components compared with control. Interestingly, the Eg site was more responsive to the potassium fertilization (significant interaction of field and fertilization), as the fertilizer resulted in a higher rate of plant biochemical properties and seed components. The use of potassium fertilization at 300 kg/ha (K3) was the most effective treatment in the alleviation of stress. Interestingly, under drought stress, potassium contributed to the enhanced quantity and quality of sunflower by increasing seed components, and enhancing the biochemical properties of the plant, which can also improve crop physiological mechanisms. The results can further increase our understanding related to the effects of potassium fertilization on the yield and physiology of sunflower under drought stress. Such results are of economic, environmental and health significance.

Mannose-binding lectin (MBL) is an acute phase protein which recognizes the pathogens through its carbohydrate recognition domain. It is an important part of human innate immunity. The aim of the current study was to evaluate the impact of MBL2 polymorphism on pulmonary tuberculosis in a number of patients from the southeast of Iran. In this case-control study, 2 MBL gene polymorphisms (rs1800450, rs7095891) were genotyped using PCR-RFLP method and polymerase chain reaction for detection of 34bp ins/del of MBL2 gene (rs777980157) polymorphism. The study included 170 patients with PTB (pulmonary tuberculosis) and 175 control subjects. The findings indicated that the GA (GA vs. GG: OR=0.172, 95% CI=0.107-0.275, P<0.001) (OR - odds ratio; CI - confidence interval) genotype as well as GA+AA (GA+AA vs. GG: OR=0.191, 95% CI=0.120-0.302, P<0.001) genotype of rs1800450 reduced the risk of PTB compared to GG genotype. The rs7095891 variant significantly decreased the risk of PTB in codominant (GA vs. GG: OR=0.118, 95% CI=0.054-0.258, P<0.001; and AA vs. GG: OR=0.029, 95% CI=0.01-0.082, P<0.001), dominant (GA+AA vs. GG: OR=0.095, 95% CI=0.044-0.207, P<0.001) and recessive (AA vs. GA+GG: OR=0.172, CI=0.081-0.365, P<0.001) inheritance models. No significant relationship was identified between the rs777980157 variant and PTB risk/protection. In conclusion, we found that the MBL2 rs1800450 and rs7095891 polymorphisms provide relative protection against PTB. Additional studies on larger populations with different ethnicities are required to verify our findings.

Background and Objectives: Several studies inspected the impact of P2X7 polymorphisms on individual susceptibility to tuberculosis (TB), but the findings are still controversial and inconclusive. To achieve a more precise estimation, we conducted a meta-analysis of all eligible studies on the association between P2X7 polymorphisms and TB risk. Materials and Methods: Relevant studies were identified by searching the PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus and Google scholar databases up to November 2018. Twenty-four full-text articles were included in our meta-analysis. The strength of association between P2X7 polymorphisms and TB risk was evaluated by odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) under five genetic models. Results: The findings of this meta-analysis revealed that the rs3751143 variant significantly increased the risk of TB in heterozygous codominant (OR = 1.44, 95%CI = 1.17-1.78, p = 0.0006, AC vs. AA), homozygous codominant (OR = 1.87, 95% CI = 1.40-2.49, p = 0.0004, CC vs. AA), dominant (OR = 1.50, 95% CI = 1.22-1.85, p = 0.0002, AC + CC vs. AA), recessive (OR = 1.61, 95% CI = 1.25-2.07, p = 0.001, CC vs. AC + AA), and allele (OR = 1.41, 95% CI = 1.19-1.67, p < 0.0001, C vs. A) genetic models. Stratified analysis showed that rs3751143 increased the risk of pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) and extrapulmonary tuberculosis (EPTB) in all genetic models. Furthermore, the rs3751143 increased risk of TB in the Asian population. The findings did not support an association between the rs2393799, rs1718119, rs208294, rs7958311, and rs2230911 polymorphisms of P2X7 and TB risk. Conclusions: The findings of this meta-analysis suggest that P2X7 rs3751143 polymorphism may play a role in susceptibility to TB in the Asian population. More well-designed studies are required to elucidate the exact role of P2X7 polymorphisms on TB development.

Maternal exposure to environmental contaminants is a predisposing factor for neurodevelopmental disorders with associated cognitive and social deficits in offspring. In this study, we investigated the effects of maternal exposure to selenium (Se), a contaminant of potential environmental concern in aquatic ecosystems, on cognitive performance and the underlying mechanisms in F1-generation adult zebrafish. Adult female zebrafish were exposed to different concentrations of dietary Se (3.5, 11.1, or 27.4 µg Se/g dry weight) for a period of 60 days. Fish were subsequently bred, and their offspring were collected and raised for 6 months on a normal diet. Maternal exposure to all concentrations of dietary Se induced learning impairment in F1-zebrafish tested in a latent learning task. The results also showed a hyperfunctioning dopaminergic system in fish exhibiting the learning deficit. The hyperfunction of the dopaminergic system was associated with enhanced oxidative stress and alterations in the mRNA abundance of several immediate early and late response genes in the zebrafish brain. Taken together, these results suggest that maternal exposure to dietary Se via alterations in the dopaminergic system leads to persistent neurobehavioral deficits in F1-generation adult zebrafish.

Climate change-induced extreme heat events are becoming a major issue in different parts of the world, especially in developing countries. The assessment of regional and temporal past and future change in heat waves is a crucial task for public health strategies and managements. The historical and future heat index (HI) time series are investigated for temporal change across Iran to study the impact of global warming on public health. The heat index is calculated, and the nonparametric trend assessment is carried out for historical time series (1981-2010). The future change in heat index is also projected for 2020-2049 and 2070-2099 periods. A rise in the historical heat index and extreme caution conditions for summer and spring seasons for major parts of Iran are notable for historical (1981-2010) series in this study. Using different climate change scenarios shows that heat index will exceed the critical threshold for human adaptability in the future in the country. The impact of climate change on heat index risk in Iran is significant in the future. To cope with this crucial situation, developing early warning systems and health care strategies to deal with population growth and remarkable socio-economic features in future is essential.

This study aimed to assess the effects of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) on growth and survival of isolated early human follicles in a three-dimensional culture system. After fresh and vitrified-warmed ovarian tissue was digested, isolated early preantral follicles and ovarian cells were separately encapsulated in 1% alginate (w/v). The encapsulated follicles and ovarian cells were cultured together in a medium supplemented with foetal bovine serum (FBS), PRP, PRP + FBS, or human serum albumin (HSA) for 10 days. Growth and survival of the follicles were assessed by measurement of diameter and staining with trypan blue. Follicular integrity was assessed by histological analysis. After culturing, all follicles increased in size, but growth rate was greater in follicles isolated from fresh samples than those from vitrified-warmed ones (P < 0.001). Similarly, follicular viability of fresh samples after culturing was higher than that of vitrified-warmed ones. The growth and survival rates of follicles from both fresh and vitrified groups cultured in PRP supplemented media were significantly higher than those of other groups (growth P < 0.001 and survival P < 0.05, in both groups). In conclusion, media supplementation with PRP can better support viability and growth of isolated human early preantral follicles in vitro.

The present study was designed to investigate the effects of chronic dietary exposure to selenium (Se) on zebrafish cognition and also to elucidate possible mechanism(s) by which Se exerts its neurotoxicity. To this end, adult zebrafish were exposed to different concentrations of dietary l-selenomethionine (control, 2.3, 9.7, 32.5, or 57.7 µg Se/g dry weight) for 30 days. Cognitive performance of fish was tested using a latent learning paradigm in a complex maze. In addition, we also evaluated oxidative stress biomarkers and the expression of genes involved in dopaminergic neurotransmission in the zebrafish brain. Fish treated with higher dietary Se doses (32.5 and 57.5 µg Se/g) exhibited impaired performance in the latent learning task. The impaired learning was associated with the induction of oxidative stress and altered mRNA expression of dopamine receptors, tyrosine hydroxylase, and dopamine transporter genes in the zebrafish brain. Collectively, our results illustrate that cognitive impairment in zebrafish could be associated with Se-induced oxidative stress and altered dopaminergic neurotransmission in the brain.

In vitro follicle growth is a promising strategy for female fertility preservation. This study was conducted to compare the development of ovine follicles either isolated or in the context of ovarian cortical pieces after short term (8 days) three-dimensional culture in fresh and vitrified samples. Four different experiments were conducted; I) culture of ovarian cortical pieces encapsulated in 0.5% and 1% alginate and without alginate encapsulation (CP-0.5%, CP-1% and CP, respectively), II) culture of isolated primordial and primary follicles encapsulated in 1% and 2% alginate (IF-1% and IF-2%, respectively), III) culture of fresh and vitrified-warmed cortical pieces (F-CP and Vit-CP, respectively), and IV) culture of fresh and vitrified-warmed encapsulated isolated follicles (F-IF and Vit-IF, respectively). The number of secondary follicles after culture was negatively influenced by encapsulation of ovarian cortical pieces (6.3 ± 3.3 and 10.6 ± 0.9 vs 21.5 ± 2.3 in CP-0.5% and CP-1% vs CP, respectively). The diameter of follicles in IF-2% was higher than IF-1% (54.06 ± 2 vs 41.9 ± 1.5) and no significant difference in follicular viability was observed between the two groups. The proportions of different follicular types and their viability after culture in vitrified-warmed cortical pieces were comparable with fresh ones. The viability of vitrified-warmed isolated follicles was lower than fresh counterparts. The growth rate of fresh follicles was higher than vitrified-warmed follicles after culture (47.9 ± 1 vs 44.6 ± 1). In conclusion, while encapsulation of ovarian cortical pieces decreased the follicles' development, it could better support the growth of isolated follicles. Moreover, the viability and growth rate of isolated-encapsulated follicles was decreased by vitrification.

OBJECTIVE: The effect of rs4331426 polymorphism in the Chr18q11.2 locus on pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) risk was evaluated. METHODS: This case-control study included 208 PTB patients and 204 healthy subjects. Genotyping of the rs4331426 variant was conducted using polymerase chain reaction restriction fragment length polymorphism. RESULTS: The frequencies of genotypes AA, AG, and GG polymorphisms were 83.1%, 15.9%, and 1.0% in the PTB group and 84.3%, 15.2%, and 0.5% in the control group, respectively. The frequency of the minor (G) allele was 8.9% in the PTB group and 8.1% in controls. Neither genotype nor allele frequencies of the rs4331426 variant showed statistically significant differences between PTB and controls. In addition, stratification by sex showed no significant association between the rs4331426 variant and PTB risk in males or females. CONCLUSION: In conclusion, the results of this study do not support an association between the rs4331426 polymorphism and risk of PTB in an Iranian population.

A case-control study was carried out that involved 203 individuals diagnosed with pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) and 203 healthy subjects. Genotyping of TLR1 rs5743551 and rs5743618 polymorphisms was done using polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragments length polymorphism assay. We found that TLR1 rs5743551 variant affected the risk of PTB in the codominant (OR=3.28, 95% CI=1.98-5.45, P<0.0001, GA vs. GG; OR=1.86, 95% CI=1.05-3.28, P=0.033, AA vs. GG) and dominant (OR=2.69, 95% CI=1.67-4.34, P<0.0001, GA+AA vs. GG) inheritance models tested. The A allele was associated with a higher risk of PTB than the G allele (OR=1.33, 95% CI=1.01-1.75, P=0.049). The TG genotype of the rs5743618 variant significantly increased the risk of PTB compared to the risk associated with the TT genotype (OR=3.29, 95% CI=1.82-5.97, P<0.0001). The G allele was associated with a higher risk of PTB than the T allele (OR=3.00, 95% CI=1.69-5.31, P=0.0001). Our findings revealed that TLR1 rs5743551 and rs5743618 polymorphisms affected the risk of PTB in an Iranian population sample. Additional studies with larger sample sizes and involving subjects of different ethnicities are required to validate our present findings.

RESUMO

Cysteine-cysteine chemokine ligand 5 (CCL5) with immunoregulatory and inflammatory activities has an important role in granuloma formations that activates and stimulates T-cells and macrophages. Cysteine-cysteine chemokine receptor 5 (CCR5) is a chemokine receptor, which is important for migration of immune cells to site of infection. In the present study we investigated the possible association between CCL5 -403G/A (rs2107538), CCL5 -28C/G (rs2280788) and CCR5 Δ32 polymorphisms and pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) in an Iranian population. This case-control study was performed on 160 patients with pulmonary tuberculosis and 160 unrelated healthy subjects. The CCL5 -403G/A, CCL5 -28C/G and CCR5 Δ32 polymorphisms were genotyped by allele-specific polymerase chain reaction (AS-PCR), tetra amplification refractory mutation system polymerase chain reaction (T-ARMS PCR) and PCR, respectively. Our results showed that GA as well as GA+AA genotypes of CCL5 -403G/A (rs2107538) increased the risk of PTB in comparison with GG genotype (OR=1.70, 95% CI=1.03-2.81, P=0.038 and OR=1.64, 95% CI=1.00-2.68, P=0.049, respectively). No significant association was found between CCL5 -28C/G as well as CCR5 Δ32 polymorphism and PTB risk. In conclusion, our findings proposed that CCL5 -403G>A polymorphism may be a risk factor for susceptibility to PTB in our population. Larger sample sizes with different ethnicities are required to validate our findings.

The synthetic organic compound 4-nonylphenol (4-NP) has been shown to have a wide range of adverse effects on the endocrine system of various animals including fish. The present study evaluated the potential effects of 4-NP on vitellogenin (VTG) synthesis, steroid, and thyroid hormone concentrations in both juvenile male and female rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss). Fish were exposed by intraperitoneal injection to different doses of 4-NP (1, 10, 50, and 100 µg g(-1)) or vehicle (coconut oil) over a period of 14 days. Blood samples were collected 7 and 14 days after initiation of treatment. Plasma VTG levels in 4-NP-treated fish were detected by sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis as a high molecular weight protein band of 180 KDa. In addition, plasma VTG concentrations were quantified indirectly using plasma alkali-labile phosphate (ALP) and plasma calcium. Both ALP and calcium levels in plasma showed similar and parallel increase patterns after exposure to 4-NP that were significantly higher compared with controls. The analysis of plasma sex steroid levels revealed a significant increase in 17ß-estradiol and testosterone in plasma of juvenile males and females, respectively. Furthermore, a significant increase was observed in plasma cortisol levels. On the other hand, 4-NP decreased both plasma triiodothyronine and thyroxine after 7 and 14 days of treatment. These results suggest that 4-NP can affect different parts of the endocrine system, which may lead to serious impairments in physiological homeostasis of juvenile rainbow trout.

In the present study, the effects of xenoestrogen 4-nonylphenol (4-NP) and 17ß-estradiol (E2) on the synthesis of vitellogenin (VTG) in immature male yellowfin seabream (Acanthoparus latus) were assessed to determine the potential use of this species as a biological model for studying endocrine disrupters in the Musa estuary in southern seawaters of Iran. A total number of 104 fish were injected by 10, 50, 100, 150 and 200 µg g(-) (1) week(-) (1) of 4-NP and 2 µg g(-) (1) week(-) (1) of E2, and their blood plasma was obtained for biochemical analysis on days 0, 7 and 14. The hepatosomatic index (HSI) of each fish was also recorded at each sampling time. The results showed that 4-NP significantly induced VTG synthesis in A. latus, which was detected by gel electrophoresis as two major protein bands (∼210 and 191 KDa). The induction of VTG was also determined indirectly by measuring the alkali-labile phosphate, total plasma calcium and protein. All of these VTG indicators significantly increased in the plasma of 4-NP- and E2-treated fish. Meanwhile, a significant dose-dependent increase was observed in HSI, indicating the activation of hepatic VTG production in 4-NP- and E2-injected fish. Furthermore, the plasma alanine aminotransferase and aspartate aminotransferase concentrations significantly increased in 4-NP-treated fish, presumably reflecting a situation of hepatic tissue damage due to 4-NP toxicity. Based on the results, it is suggested that A. latus could be used successfully as a model species for future studies of endocrine disrupting contaminants in the Musa estuary.

PURPOSE: The present study by using different growth factors was aimed to develop the best practical culture condition for purification of goat undifferentiated SSCs and their colonization under in vitro and in vivo conditions. METHODS: The enzymatically isolated SSCs obtained from one month old goat testes were cultured in DMEM plus FCS supplemented with different sets of growth factors (GDNF, LIF, bFGF, and EGF) for 2 weeks. At the end of each week, the morphological characteristics of cells and colonies alongside with purification rate of undifferentiated type A spermatogonia were evaluated by immunocytochemical staining and flow cytometry. RESULTS: The number and size of colonies in treatment groups were significantly (P < 0.01) higher than corresponding values in control group. In immunocytochemical evaluation, the proportion of KIT and PGP9.5 positive cells were significantly (P < 0.001) higher in control and treatment groups, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: The culture medium comprising all four growth factors, especially the one supplemented with the higher concentration of GDNF, was superior to the other groups with respect to the population of undifferentiated type A spermatogonia and its propagation in culture system. Additionally, goat SSCs could colonize within the mouse testis following xenotransplantation.

Nonylphenol (NP) is an endocrine disrupting chemical which has been shown to be able to modulate the endocrine system of various organisms by different mechanisms. The objective of this study was to investigate the potential effects of 4-NP on steroid and thyroid hormone levels in sexually immature male yellowfin seabream (Acanthopagrus latus), a protandrous hermaphrodite species. For this, the fish were injected with ascending doses (10, 50, 100, and 200 µg g(-1) body weight) of 4-nonylphenol (4-NP) or vehicle during 2 weeks. After 7 and 14 days the fish were anesthetized, blood sample were collected and plasma steroid and thyroid hormone concentrations were quantified by radioimmunoassay. The result showed that 4-NP induced a significant increase in 17ß-etradiol levels at dose 10 µg g(-1) , while the levels of this hormone in the higher doses decreased compared with the control group. However, 4-NP treatment did not have any significant effect on plasma levels of testosterone. In addition, it was observed that 4-NP affect the level of thyroid hormones in fish. Plasma thyroxine levels increased in a dose-dependent manner after 7 and 14 days of the exposure. In contrast, a significant decrease in triiodothyronine levels was observed during the experiment period. Moreover, no significant change was detected for thyroid stimulating hormone levels in 4-NP-treated fish. These results indicated that 4-NP could lead to disturb the balance of steroid and thyroid hormones with potential consequences for sexually immature male yellowfin seabream.

There is little data, to our knowledge, on the biochemical properties of different Satureja sp. genotypes affected by plant growth regulators (PGR) under temperature stress. A split plot research on the basis of a complete randomized block design with three replicates examining temperature stress (planting dates, 8th of April, May and June) (main factor), and the factorial combination of plant growth regulators (PGR, control (CO), gibberellic acid (GA), fertilization (MI), and amino acid (A)), and genotypes (Khuzestani, Mutika, and Bakhtiari) on plant biochemical properties, was conducted. Plant pigment contents (chlorophyll a, and b and carotenoids (car)), antioxidant activity (catalase (CAT), ascorbate peroxidase (APX) and guaiacol peroxidase (GP)), and leaf protein were determined. Treatments significantly and differently affected the genotypes performance. PD3 and PD1resulted in significantly higher activity of APX (0.059 U. mg-1) and GP (0.190 U. mg-1), respectively (P ≤ 0.05). Temperature stress significantly affected plant CAT activity (U. mg-1) at PD1 (0.084) and PD3 (0.820). Higher temperature significantly enhanced leaf Pro, MI increased plant APX (0.054) and CAT activities (0.111 U. mg-1) significantly, and GA resulted in the highest and significantly different GP activity (0.186 U. mL-1). Treatments T1 and T3 significantly enhanced Chla and Car content, and MI resulted in significantly higher Chlb content (0.085 mg g-1 leaf fresh weight). Car and CAT are the two most sensitive biochemical traits under temperature stress and can more effectively regulate Satureja growth and activity. It is possible to alleviate temperature stress on Satureja biochemical properties by the tested PGR.
