BACKGROUND: To examine whether the "Effectiveness of Guideline for Dissemination and Education in psychiatric treatment (EGIUDE)" project affects the rate of prescriptions of hypnotic medication and the type of hypnotic medications prescribed among psychiatrists, for schizophrenia and major depressive disorder in Japan. METHODS: The EGUIDE project is a nationwide prospective study of evidence-based clinical guidelines for schizophrenia and major depressive disorder in Japan. From 2016 to 2021, clinical and prescribing data from patients discharged from hospitals participating in the EGUIDE project were used to examine hypnotic medication prescriptions The prescribing rate of hypnotics and the prescribing rate of each type of hypnotic (benzodiazepine receptor agonist, nonbenzodiazepine receptor agonist, melatonin receptor agonist, and orexin receptor antagonist) were compared among patients who had been prescribed medication by psychiatrists participating in the EGUIDE project and patients who had been prescribed medication by nonparticipating psychiatrists. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed to examine the effect of the EGUIDE project on the prescription of hypnotic medications. RESULTS: A total of 12,161 patients with schizophrenia and 6,167 patients with major depressive disorder were included. Psychiatrists participating in the EGUIDE project significantly reduced the rate of prescribing hypnotic medication and benzodiazepine receptor agonists for both schizophrenia (P < 0.001) and major depressive disorder (P < 0.001) patients. CONCLUSION: This is the first study to investigate the educational effects of guidelines for the treatment of psychiatric disorders on psychiatrists in terms of prescribing hypnotic medications to patients. The EGUIDE project may play an important role in reducing hypnotic medication prescription rates, particularly with respect to benzodiazepine receptor agonists. The results suggest that the EGUIDE project may result in improved therapeutic behavior.

BACKGROUND: Polypharmacy of additional psychotropics alongside the main treatment drug (antipsychotics in schizophrenia and antidepressants in major depressive disorder) is common in Japan. Our goal is to align psychotropic prescription in Japan with international standards, while reducing the differences between facilities. To achieve this goal, we aimed to compare prescriptions at the time of hospital admission and discharge. METHODS: Data on prescriptions at admission and discharge from 2016 to 2020 were collected. We divided the patients into four groups: (1) mono_mono group, monotherapy of the main drug at admission and discharge; (2) mono_poly group, monotherapy at admission and polypharmacy at discharge; (3) poly_poly group, polypharmacy at admission and discharge; and (4) poly_mono group, polypharmacy at admission and monotherapy at discharge. We compared the changes in dosage and number of psychotropics among the four groups. RESULTS: For both schizophrenia and major depressive disorder, the patients who received monotherapy with the main drug at admission were likely to receive main drug monotherapy at discharge and vice versa. For schizophrenia, the polypharmacy was prescribed more often in the mono_poly group than that in the mono_mono group. The prescription was not changed at all for more than 10% of the patients. CONCLUSIONS: It is critical to avoid a polypharmacy regimen to ensure that guideline-compliant treatment is provided. We expect higher rates of monotherapy with the main drug after the EGUIDE lectures. TRIAL REGISTRATION: The study protocol was registered in the University Hospital Medical Information Network Registry (UMIN000022645).

The hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis is an important regulatory mechanism involved primarily in the development and regulation of the reproductive systems. The suppression of the HPG axis by gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) analogues is expected to be effective for the treatment of sex hormone-dependent diseases, such as endometriosis, uterine fibroid, prostate cancer, benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Despite the established involvement of GnRH signalling in these disorders, the therapeutic efficacy of small molecular GnRH antagonists for BPH and PCOS has not been adequately evaluated in non-clinical studies. Therefore, the purpose of the present study was to evaluate the potential of linzagolix, a small molecular GnRH antagonist, as a potential new treatment option for BPH and PCOS. Dogs and rats exhibiting normal prostates and dogs diagnosed with prostatic hyperplasia were used to evaluate the effects of linzagolix in BPH. The effects of linzagolix were also examined in a rat model of PCOS induced by repeated administration of letrozole, an aromatase inhibitor. Linzagolix reduced serum luteinizing hormone and testosterone levels in male rats and normal or BPH model dogs and suppressed prostate weight without testosterone depletion, suggesting the existence of an optimal therapeutic testosterone level for BPH treatment. In a PCOS rat model, linzagolix improved both insulin resistance and ovarian dysfunction. Treatment with linzagolix decreased follicle-stimulating hormone levels, but did not alter serum luteinizing hormone and testosterone levels. These results indicate that linzagolix may provide a new treatment option for GnRH-related disorders, such as BPH and PCOS.

AIM: We investigated the association of electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) with anxiolytic and sleep medication use in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) and schizophrenia (SZ). METHODS: This nationwide observational study analyzed data from 3483 MDD inpatients and 6663 SZ inpatients. Patients with MDD and SZ were classified into those who underwent ECT during hospitalization and those who did not. A propensity score-matching method was performed to adjust for preadmission characteristics and clinical information, which were expected bias between the two groups. Rates of anxiolytic and sleep medication use at discharge were compared in the matched sample. RESULTS: 500 MDD patients were assigned to both groups. In the matched MDD sample, the rate of anxiolytic and sleep medication use at discharge was significantly lower in the ECT group than in the non-ECT group (64.9% vs. 75.8%, P = 1.7 × 10-4 ). In the ECT group, the rate of anxiolytic and sleep medication use at discharge was significantly lower than that prior to admission (64.9% vs. 73.2%, P = 1.2 × 10-14 ). 390 SZ patients were allocated. In the matched SZ sample, the ECT group was not significantly different from the non-ECT group in the rate of anxiolytics and sleep medications use at discharge (61.3% vs. 68.2%, P = 4.3 × 10-2 ). In the ECT group, the rate of anxiolytics and sleep medications use at discharge was significantly lower than that before admission (61.3% vs. 70.5%, P = 4.4 × 10-4 ), although this was not the primary outcome. CONCLUSION: Reduction of anxiolytic and sleep medication use may be considered positively when ECT is indicated for treatment of MDD.

AIM: This study aims to examine the real-world effectiveness of education regarding clinical guidelines for psychiatric disorders using 'the Effectiveness of guidelines for dissemination and education in psychiatric treatment (EGUIDE)' project. METHODS: The EGUIDE project is a nationwide prospective implementation study of two clinical practice guidelines, i.e., the Guideline for Pharmacological Therapy of Schizophrenia and the Treatment Guidelines for Major Depressive Disorders, in Japan. Between 2016 and 2019, 782 psychiatrists belonging to 176 hospitals with psychiatric wards participated in the project and attended lectures on clinical practice guidelines. The proportions of guideline-recommended treatments in 7405 patients with schizophrenia and 3794 patients with major depressive disorder at participating hospitals were compared between patients under the care of psychiatrists participating in the project and those not participating in the project. Clinical and prescribing data on the patients discharged from April to September each year from participating hospitals of the project were also analyzed. RESULTS: The proportions of three quality indicators (antipsychotic monotherapy regardless of whether other psychotropics medication, antipsychotic monotherapy without other psychotropics and no prescription of anxiolytics or hypnotics) for schizophrenia were higher among participating psychiatrists than among nonparticipating psychiatrists. As similar results were obtained in major depressive disorder, the effectiveness of the project for the dissemination of guideline-recommended treatment has been replicated. CONCLUSION: This strategy of providing education regarding the clinical guidelines for psychiatric disorders was effective in improving the treatment-related behavior of psychiatrists. The use of this education-based strategy might contribute to resolving the mental health treatment gap.

BACKGROUND: There is no comprehensive study on PAM-like MBLs. OBJECTIVES: Our aim was to characterize novel B3 MBL variants, PAM-2 and PAM-3, from Pseudomonas tohonis clinical isolates. METHODS: We evaluated the antimicrobial susceptibility and the MBL gene composition of three novel P. tohonis clinical isolates identified at a Japanese hospital, using the broth microdilution method and WGS, respectively. We characterized the PAM-2 and PAM-3 proteins using recombinant protein expression and biochemical evaluations. RESULTS: Low carbapenem MICs (meropenem MIC = 0.125-1 mg/L) were observed for all three P. tohonis isolates; however, the isolates produced MBLs. We identified blaPAM-2 and blaPAM-3 as potential genes, belonging to a novel subclass of B3 MBLs. Their genomic sequence was similar to that of blaPAM-1 from Pseudomonas alcaligenes. PAM-2 and PAM-3 comprised 287 amino acids and exhibited 90% amino acid identity with PAM-1, 73% identity with POM-1 from Pseudomonas otitidis and 61% identity with L1 from Stenotrophomonas maltophilia. Biochemical evaluations of recombinant PAM-2 and PAM-3 revealed similar kcat/Km ratios and demonstrated catalytic activity against all the tested ß-lactams, except for aztreonam. In addition, the kcat/Km ratio for imipenem was 40-fold lower than that for meropenem. CONCLUSIONS: P. tohonis harbours a species-specific PAM-family MBL gene. This enzyme has higher hydrolytic activity against meropenem compared with that against imipenem.

BACKGROUND: Although clozapine is effective for treatment-resistant schizophrenia (TRS), the rate of clozapine prescription is still low. Whereas antipsychotic monotherapy is recommended in clinical practice guidelines, the rate of antipsychotic polypharmacy is still high. There is little evidence on whether a clozapine prescription influences changes in the rate of monotherapy and polypharmacy, including antipsychotics and other psychotropics. We therefore hypothesized that the rate of antipsychotic monotherapy in patients with TRS who were prescribed clozapine would be higher than that in patients with schizophrenia who were not prescribed clozapine. METHODS: We assessed 8306 patients with schizophrenia nationwide from 178 institutions in Japan from 2016 to 2019. We analyzed the psychotropic prescription data at discharge in patients diagnosed with TRS and with no description of TRS (ND-TRS) based on the diagnosis listed in the discharge summary. RESULTS: The rate of antipsychotic monotherapy in the TRS with clozapine group (91.3%) was significantly higher than that in the TRS without clozapine group (45.9%; P < 2.0 × 10-16) and the ND-TRS without clozapine group (54.7%; P < 2.0 × 10-16). The rate of antipsychotic monotherapy without any other concomitant psychotropics in the TRS with clozapine group (26.5%) was significantly higher than that in the TRS without clozapine group (12.6%; P = 1.1 × 10-6) and the ND-TRS without clozapine group (17.0%; P = 5.9 × 10-6). CONCLUSIONS: Clozapine prescription could be associated with a high rate of antipsychotic monotherapy. Patients will benefit from the correct diagnosis of TRS and thus from proper clozapine prescription.

BACKGROUND: Several guidelines recommend monotherapy in pharmacotherapy for schizophrenia and major depressive disorder. The content of regular prescriptions has been reported in several studies, but not enough research has been conducted on the content of pharmacotherapy, including pro re nata (PRN) medications. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the content of pharmacotherapy, including PRN medications, and to clarify the relationship with regular prescriptions. METHODS: We used data from the "Effectiveness of Guidelines for Dissemination And Education in psychiatric treatment" (EGUIDE) project to investigate the presence or absence of PRN psychotropic medications at discharge for each drug category. We compared the PRN psychotropic prescription ratio at discharge by diagnosis for each drug category. The antipsychotic monotherapy ratio and no prescription ratio of other psychotropics for schizophrenia at discharge and the antidepressant monotherapy ratio and no prescription ratio of other psychotropics for major depressive disorder at discharge were calculated for each regular prescription, including PRN psychotropic medications, as quality indicators (QIs). Spearman's rank correlation test was performed for QI values of regular prescriptions and the QI ratio between regular prescriptions and prescriptions including PRN medications for each diagnosis. RESULTS: The PRN psychotropic prescription ratio at discharge was 28.7% for schizophrenia and 30.4% for major depressive disorder, with no significant differences by diagnosis. The prescription ratios of PRN antipsychotic medications and PRN antiparkinsonian medications were significantly higher for schizophrenia. The prescription ratios of PRN anxiolytic and hypnotic and PRN antidepressant medications were significantly higher for patients with major depressive disorder. For both schizophrenia and major depressive disorder, the QI was lower for discharge prescriptions, including PRN medications, than for regular prescriptions. QI values for regular prescriptions and the QI ratio were positively correlated. CONCLUSIONS: Considering PRN psychotropic medications, the monotherapy ratio and no prescription ratio of other psychotropics at discharge decreased in pharmacotherapy for schizophrenia and major depressive disorder. A higher ratio of monotherapy and no prescription of other psychotropics on regular prescriptions may result in less concomitant use of PRN psychotropic medications. Further studies are needed to optimize PRN psychotropic prescriptions.

Strain TUM18999T was isolated from the skin of a patient with burn wounds in Japan. The strain was successfully cultured at 20-42 °C (optimum, 30-35 °C) in 1.0-4.0% NaCl (w/v) and at pH 5.5-9.5, optimum pH 5.5-8.5. The phylogenetic tree reconstructed using 16S rRNA, gyrB, rpoB and rpoD gene sequences indicated that strain TUM18999T is closely related to Pseudomonas otitidis MCC10330T. Although the partial 16S rRNA gene sequence (1412 bp) of TUM18999T exhibits high similarity to those of Pseudomonas alcaligenes NBRC 14159T (99.08 %) and Pseudomonas otitidis MCC10330T (98.51 %), multi-locus sequence analysis using 16S rRNA, gyrB, rpoB and rpoD genes reveals a clear distinction between TUM18999T and other Pseudomonas species. In addition, an average nucleotide identity >90 % was not observed in the P. aeruginosa group. Moreover, TUM18999T and P. otitidis can be distinguished based on the minimum inhibitory concentration for carbapenem. Meanwhile, the cellular fatty acids are enriched with C18 : 1 ω7c/C18 : 1 ω6c (34.35 %), C16 : 1 ω7c/C16 : 1 ω6c (24.22 %), C16 : 0 (19.79 %) and C12 : 0 (8.25 %). Based on this evidence, strain TUM18999T can be defined as representing a novel Pseudomonas species, with the proposed name Pseudomonas tohonis sp. nov. The type strain is TUM18999T (GTC 22698T=NCTC 14580T).

We report a case of late-onset schizophrenia that required differentiation from a dementing disorder. The patient was an 83-year-old woman who had experienced auditory hallucinations since she was 67 years old. The patient had slightly elevated total tau and slightly decreased amyloid ß1-42, cerebrospinal fluid biomarkers. This case was identified as late-onset schizophrenia. However, the results of cerebrospinal fluid biomarkers indicated that neurofibrillary tangles and neuronal death, which are characteristic of Alzheimer 's disease, may also have been present. Late-onset schizophrenia should be treated based on an appropriate differential diagnosis, including neuropathological consideration of dementing disorders.

BACKGROUND: To prevent the novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), it is necessary to perform early identification and isolation of people shedding the infectious virus in biological materials with high viral loads several days prior to symptom onset. Rapid antigen tests for infectious diseases are useful to prevent the pandemic spread in clinical settings. METHODS: We evaluated a SARS-CoV-2 antigen test, Espline® SARS-CoV-2 reagent, with reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) as reference test, using 129 nasopharyngeal swab specimens collected from COVID-19 hospitalized patients or from patients suspected having COVID-19-like symptoms. Out of these, 63 RT-PCR positive and 66 RT-PCR negative specimens were identified. RESULTS: Among 63 RT-PCR positive specimens, 25 were positive in the Espline test. Test sensitivity was estimated based on the 532.4 copies/reaction of SARS-CoV-2 RNA obtained through receiver operating characteristic analysis. When the specimens were classified based on time since symptom onset, Espline test sensitivity were 73.3% and 29.2% in specimens collected before day 9 and after day 10, respectively. CONCLUSION: Although the overall sensitivity of the Espline® SARS-CoV-2 reagent compared with RT-PCR is less, this antigen test can be useful in identifying people with high risk of virus transmission with high viral loads in order to prevent the pandemic and is useful for diagnosing COVID-19 within 30 min.

BACKGROUND: Expansion of the testing capacity for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is an important issue to mitigate the pandemic of coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) caused by this virus. Recently, a sensitive quantitative antigen test (SQT), Lumipulse® SARS-CoV-2 Ag, was developed. It is a fully automated chemiluminescent enzyme immunoassay system for SARS-CoV-2. METHODS: In this study, the analytical performance of SQT was examined using clinical specimens from nasopharyngeal swabs using reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) as a control. RESULTS: Receiver operating characteristic analysis of 24 SARS-CoV-2-positive and 524 -negative patients showed an area under the curve of 0.957 ± 0.063. Using a cut-off value of 1.34 pg/ml, the sensitivity was 91.7%, the specificity was 98.5%, and the overall rate of agreement was 98.2%. In the distribution of negative cases, the 99.5 percentile value was 1.03 pg/ml. There was a high correlation between the viral load calculated using the cycle threshold value of RT-PCR and the concentration of antigen. The tendency for the antigen concentration to decrease with time after disease onset correlated with that of the viral load. CONCLUSIONS: Presented results indicate that SQT is highly concordant with RT-PCR and should be useful for the diagnosis of COVID-19 in any clinical setting. Therefore, this fully automated kit will contribute to the expansion of the testing capability for SARS-CoV-2.

In this study, we report the features of an adenocarcinoma with giant cell formation spontaneously occurring in the accessory sex glands of a male 10-month-old Sprague-Dawley rat. A milky white mass was found in the region corresponding to the left seminal vesicle and the left coagulating gland. Histologically, tumor cells exhibited diverse growth patterns, including glandular/trabecular, cystic, and sheet-like growth areas. The tumor cells were pleomorphic, with round- or oval-shaped nuclei and abundant eosinophilic cytoplasm. Mitotic figures were occasionally observed. Giant cells were also prominent in the sheet-like growth area, with intracytoplasmic vacuoles containing eosinophilic material. The stroma was rich in collagen fibers and fibroblasts. Numerous inflammatory cells were observed in the glandular and cystic lumina and stroma. Immunohistochemically, the tumor cells were positive for cytokeratin AE1/AE3 and proliferating cell nuclear antigen. In the sheet-like growth area, some of the tumor cells and giant cells were positive for vimentin in the cytoplasm adjacent to the nucleus. Electron microscopy revealed that the tumor cells contained a small number of mitochondria and rough endoplasmic reticulum, and had no basement membrane or desmosome. The giant cells occasionally contained variably sized intracytoplasmic lumina and globular filamentous bodies, probably corresponding to vimentin. Considering these morphological features, the tumor was diagnosed as an adenocarcinoma with the formation of giant tumor cells originating from the male accessory sex glands.

OBJECTIVES: Detection of carbapenem-hydrolysing class D ß-lactamase (CHDL)-producing Acinetobacter spp. is critical for understanding antibiotic resistance. In this study, we compared the available detection techniques derived from the carbapenem inactivation method (CIM), using CHDL-producing Acinetobacter spp., and developed a modified method that uses bacterial lysate (lysate CIM; LCIM). METHODS: A total of 159 Acinetobacter spp. (102 carbapenemase producers and 57 non-producers) and 14 Pseudomonas spp. (7 carbapenemase producers and 7 non-producers) were tested. Modified CIM, simplified CIM, CIMTris, Triton-CIM and LCIM were compared using these strains. Distinct from the CIM, LCIM includes a longer incubation period (4 h) with 2.0% Triton X-100 (v/v) in 20 mM MOPS buffer instead of water. RESULTS: The sensitivity/specificity of the modified CIM, simplified CIM, CIMTris, Triton-CIM and LCIM were 71.6%/100%, 66.1%/89.1%, 88.1%/95.3%, 80.7%/100% and 97.2%/100%, respectively. LCIM was the most sensitive and specific. CONCLUSIONS: Use of bacterial lysate and MOPS increased the sensitivity of the CIM in detecting CHDL-producing Acinetobacter spp.

Staphylococcus argenteus, characterized by the formation of non-pigmented (white) colonies, was recently identified as a new lineage separated from Staphylococcus aureus. However, correct identification of this lineage is difficult because of the similar characteristics to S. aureus. Here, we describe the first known case of keratoconjunctivitis due to S. argenteus in a 64-year-old man with diabetes. The symptoms of the patient were not improved by antibiotic therapy using levofloxacin eye drops (15 mg/mL). The conjunctival scraping was cultured, and coagulase-positive staphylococci forming white colonies were detected. Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization-time of flight mass spectrometry confirmed the species as S. argenteus with a spectral score of 1.97. After the antibiotic was changed to vancomycin eye drops (10 mg/mL), the patient's symptom clearly improved. Multi-locus sequence typing showed that this isolate belonged to sequence type 1223, which has been predominantly isolated worldwide. Furthermore, this isolate harbored various virulence genes associated with S. aureus, such as staphylococcal enterotoxins and leukocidin. Since only limited information is available for this organism, further studies are needed to establish the epidemiology of S. argenteus.

AIM: Although treatment guidelines for pharmacological therapy for schizophrenia and major depressive disorder have been issued by the Japanese Societies of Neuropsychopharmacology and Mood Disorders, these guidelines have not been well applied by psychiatrists throughout the nation. To address this issue, we developed the 'Effectiveness of Guidelines for Dissemination and Education in Psychiatric Treatment (EGUIDE)' integrated education programs for psychiatrists to disseminate the clinical guidelines. Additionally, we conducted a systematic efficacy evaluation of the programs. METHODS: Four hundred thirteen out of 461 psychiatrists attended two 1-day educational programs based on the treatment guidelines for schizophrenia and major depressive disorder from October 2016 to March 2018. We measured the participants' clinical knowledge of the treatment guidelines using self-completed questionnaires administered before and after the program to assess the effectiveness of the programs for improving knowledge. We also examined the relation between the participants' demographics and their clinical knowledge scores. RESULTS: The clinical knowledge scores for both guidelines were significantly improved after the program. There was no correlation between clinical knowledge and participant demographics for the program on schizophrenia; however, a weak positive correlation was found between clinical knowledge and the years of professional experience for the program on major depressive disorder. CONCLUSION: Our results provide evidence that educational programs on the clinical practices recommended in guidelines for schizophrenia and major depressive disorder might effectively improve participants' clinical knowledge of the guidelines. These data are encouraging to facilitate the standardization of clinical practices for psychiatric disorders.

GW182 family proteins play important roles in microRNA (miRNA)-mediated RNA silencing. They directly interact with Argonaute (Ago) proteins in processing bodies (P bodies), cytoplasmic foci involved in mRNA degradation and storage. Recently, we revealed that a human GW182 family protein, TNRC6A, is a nuclear-cytoplasmic shuttling protein, and its subcellular localization is regulated by its own nuclear localization signal and nuclear export signal. Regarding the further controlling mechanism of TNRC6A subcellular localization, we found that TNRC6A protein is tethered in P bodies by direct interaction with Ago2 under Ago2 overexpression condition in HeLa cells. Furthermore, it was revealed that such Ago proteins might be strongly tethered in the P bodies through Ago-bound small RNAs. Thus, our results indicate that TNRC6A subcellular localization is substantially controlled by the interaction with Ago proteins. Furthermore, it was also revealed that the TNRC6A subcellular localization affects the RNA silencing activity.

A small mass with an ulcer was found in the skin of the dorsal cervix of a 7-month-old male Sprague-Dawley rat. Histologically, the central region of the tumor showed a high cellular density with oval-shaped tumor cells arranged in an alveolar pattern and thin collagen fiber bundles. The peripheral region of the tumor had a low cellular density with short spindle- or polygonal-shaped tumor cells surrounded by abundant collagen fiber bundles. Immunohistochemically, the tumor cells were strongly positive for vimentin and proliferating cell nuclear antigen, and a portion of the short spindle- or polygonal-shaped cells located in the peripheral region of the tumor were positive for S100A4. However, the tumor cells were negative for alpha-smooth muscle actin, desmin, S100, chromogranin A, neurofilament, CD68, Iba-1, cytokeratin 20, von Willebrand factor, melanosome, and anti-melanoma. Electron microscopically, the tumor cells had an abundance of rough endoplasmic reticulum, the Golgi apparatus, and a few intracellular collagen fibrils, showing fibroblastic features. Considering the lack of diagnostic differentiation, the tumor was diagnosed as an undifferentiated malignant mesenchymal tumor and classified as a soft tissue sarcoma with differentiation into fibroblasts in a portion of the tumor cells.

There have been a number of inconsistent previous reports indicating that mood disorder patients are relatively sensitive or conversely insensitive to physical pain. However, there have been few such studies examining pain using neurophysiological techniques. The present study was performed to investigate the differences in tactile sense recognition between mood disorder patients and control subjects using a tactile sense recognition P300 measuring system. Tactile stimuli were delivered to the index finger as frequent stimuli and to the ring finger as infrequent stimuli. Subjects were requested to press a button promptly and accurately in response to infrequent stimuli. N140 and P300 were measured in the event-related potential to infrequent stimulus paradigm. The subjects evaluated stimuli on a visual analog scale (VAS). The amplitudes of P300 were smaller for the mood disorder patients than for control subjects. The VAS scores of mood disorder patients were significantly higher than those of control subjects. In mood disorder patients, the amplitude of P300 was negatively correlated with the HAM-D score. These results suggest dysfunction of tactile sense recognition in mood disorder patients. In addition, the amplitude of P300 may be useful as a biological marker for psychological conditions in mood disorder patients.
