INTRODUCTION: The facial canal (FC) is an extensive bony canal that houses the facial nerve and occupies a central position in the petrous part of temporal bone. It is of utmost significance to otologists due to its dehiscence and relationship to the inner or middle ear components. The main objectives of current investigation are to detect variations in the reported values ​​of FC anatomy that may occur due to different methodology and to elucidate the influence of age and ethnic factors on the morphological features of FC. METHODS: The methodology is adapted to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. Pooled weighted estimation was performed to calculate the mean length, angle, and prevalence of dehiscence. RESULTS: The cross-sectional shape of FC varied from circular to ellipsoid index and is 1.45 [95% CI, 0.86-2.6]. The mean length of the FC is 34.42 mm [95% CI, 27.62-40.13 mm] and the mean width or diameter is 1.35 mm [95% CI, 1.013-1.63 mm]. The length of the FC in fetuses and children is 21.79 mm [95% CI, 18.44-25.15 mm], and 26.92 mm [95% CI, 23.3-28.3 mm], respectively. In meta-regression, age is observed as a predictor and accounts for 36% of the heterogeneity. The prevalence of FC dehiscence in healthy temporal bones is 29% [95% CI, 20-40%]. CONCLUSION: The different segments of the FC exhibit significant variability and an unusually high incidence of dehiscence, which could potentially have clinical implications for the etiopathogenesis of facial nerve dysfunction.

BACKGROUND: The auditory tube (AT), an osteocartilaginous channel, connects the nasopharynx to the middle ear cavity. At the nasopharyngeal opening of the AT, there are dense collections of submucosal glands. In a recent article, Valstar et al. proposed these nasopharyngeal tubal glands conglomerate as salivary glands, which starkly contrasts with their previously known anatomy for being a component of the respiratory tract. This study examines the contesting views regarding the taxonomical categorization of the nasopharyngeal tubal glands. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The AT glands in context were examined in human cadavers grossly, and microscopically using routine and special (Hematoxylin and Eosin [H&E] and Periodic acid-Schiff [PAS] respectively), as well as immunohistochemical (for alpha-SMA and salivary amylase) staining methods and compared with the major and minor salivary glands and the submucosal glands in the trachea. Further, a biochemical analysis was performed to detect the presence of salivary amylase in the oral and nasopharyngeal secretions of the four living human subjects, representing major salivary glands and tubal glands, respectively. RESULTS: The submucosal seromucous glands with a surface lining of respiratory epithelium were observed at the nasopharyngeal end of AT. The cells in the tubal glands showed cytoplasmic positivity for alpha-SMA, which indicated the presence of the myoepithelial cells; however, this expression was significantly lower than in the seromucous submucosal glands within the trachea. Salivary alpha-amylase was undetectable in the cadaveric tissue samples. Moreover, the amylase level in the nasopharyngeal swabs was negligible compared to the oral swabs. CONCLUSION: The anatomical location along the respiratory tract, the presence of respiratory epithelium in the overlying mucosa, their morpho-functional resemblance to the seromucous glands in the trachea, and the absence of salivary amylase strongly indicate that the tubal glands are taxonomically different from the salivary glands. Given the available evidence, their existing recognition as a part of the respiratory tract and an integral component of the AT seems more appropriate.

RESUMO

Emerging evidence suggests a detrimental impact of COVID-19 illness on the continued hippocampal neurogenesis in adults. In contrast, the existing literature supports an enhancing effect of COVID-19 vaccination on adult hippocampal neurogenesis. Vaccines against respiratory infections, including influenza, have been shown to enhance hippocampal neurogenesis in adult-age animals. We propose that a similar benefit may happen in COVID-19 vaccinated adults. The vaccine-induced enhancement of the hippocampal neurogenesis in adults thus may protect against age-related cognitive decline and mental disorders. It alsohints at an added mental health benefit of the COVID-19 vaccination programs in adults.

Young age, female sex, absence of comorbidities, and prior infection or vaccination are known epidemiological barriers for contracting the new infection and/or increased disease severity. Demographic trends from the recent coronavirus disease 2019 waves, which are believed to be driven by newer severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) variants, indicate that the aforementioned epidemiological barriers are being breached and a larger number of younger and healthy individuals are developing severe disease. The new SARS-CoV-2 variants have key mutations that can induce significant changes in the virus-host interactions. Recent studies report that, some of these mutations, singly or in a group, enhance key mechanisms, such as binding of the receptor-binding domain (RBD) of the viral spike protein with the angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) receptor in the host-cells, increase the glycosylation of spike protein at the antigenic sites, and enhance the proteolytic cleavage of the spike protein, thus leading to improved host-cell entry and the replication of the virus. The putative changes in the virus-host interactions imparted by the mutations in the RBD sequence can potentially be the reason behind the breach of the observed epidemiological barriers. Susceptibility for contracting SARS-CoV-2 infection and the disease outcomes are known to be influenced by host-cell expressions of ACE2 and other proteases. The new variants can act more efficiently, and even with the lesser availability of the viral entry-receptor and the associated proteases, can have more efficient host-cell entry and greater replication resulting in high viral loads and prolonged viral shedding, widespread tissue-injury, and severe inflammation leading to increased transmissibility and lethality. Furthermore, the accumulating evidence shows that multiple new variants have reduced neutralization by both, natural and vaccine-acquired antibodies, indicating that repeated and vaccine breakthrough infections may arise as serious health concerns in the ongoing pandemic.

Recent epidemiological studies analysing sex-disaggregated patient data of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) across the world revealed a distinct sex bias in the disease morbidity as well as the mortality - both being higher for the men. Similar antecedents have been known for the previous viral infections, including from coronaviruses, such as severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) and middle-east respiratory syndrome (MERS). A sound understanding of molecular mechanisms leading to the biological sex bias in the survival outcomes of the patients in relation to COVID-19 will act as an essential requisite for developing a sex-differentiated approach for therapeutic management of this disease. Recent studies which have explored molecular mechanism(s) behind sex-based differences in COVID-19 pathogenesis are scarce; however, existing evidence, for other respiratory viral infections, viz. SARS, MERS and influenza, provides important clues in this regard. In attempt to consolidate the available knowledge on this issue, we conducted a systematic review of the existing empirical knowledge and recent experimental studies following Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. The qualitative analysis of the collected data unravelled multiple molecular mechanisms, such as evolutionary and genetic/epigenetic factors, sex-linkage of viral host cell entry receptor and immune response genes, sex hormone and gut microbiome-mediated immune-modulation, as the possible key reasons for the sex-based differences in patient outcomes in COVID-19.

The paucity of knowledge about severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2)-specific virulence factors has greatly hampered the therapeutic management of patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Recently, a cluster of studies appeared, which presented empirical evidence for SARS-CoV-2-specific virulence factors that can explain key elements of COVID-19 pathology. These studies unravel multiple structural and nonstructural specifics of SARS-CoV-2, such as a unique FURIN cleavage site, papain-like protease (SCoV2-PLpro), ORF3b and nonstructural proteins, and dynamic conformational changes in the structure of spike protein during host cell fusion, which give it an edge in infectivity and virulence over previous coronaviruses causing pandemics. Investigators provided robust evidence that SARS-CoV-2-specific virulence factors may have an impact on viral infectivity and transmissibility and disease severity as well as the development of immunity against the infection, including response to the vaccines. In this article, we are presenting a summarized account of the newly reported studies.

INTRODUCTION: The proximal insertion beyond coracoid process of pectoralis minor is considered as hidden culprit of rotator cuff disorders. The ectopic insertion is also associated with thoracic outlet syndrome. The current review was conducted to provide a comprehensive evidence-based assessment of the anatomical characteristics of ectopic insertion of pectoralis minor. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A through systematic search was conducted on the major electronic database, PubMed, EMBASE, Google Scholar and Journals of Anatomy, orthopedics, plastic surgery, sports medicine. The primary outcome was to measure the prevalence of ectopic insertion of pectoralis minor tendons. The data extraction was conducted for pooled estimation and metanalysis. RESULTS: A total of 25 studies were included for systematic review. The overall pooled estimate of ectopic insertion of Pectoralis Minor was 19.27% (95% CI 15-24%). The prevalence rate in dissected specimen was 21% (CI 15-28%) and in arthroscopic evaluation was 22% (95% CI 5-59%) which was marginally higher with wide confidence interval due small sample size. The prevalence rate in MRI and USG were 15 and 12%, because MRI and USG have almost similar sensitivity in the detection of anomalous insertion of Pectoralis Minor. The distribution of subtypes of anomalous or ectopic insertion based on Le Double classification was 34% for type I, 42 and 9% for Type III. The incidence of ectopic insertion of pectoralis minor was highest in Japanese population. The female and left side have slightly higher incidence at insignificant level. CONCLUSION: The preoperative MRI or at least USG evaluation of shoulder joint must be conducted for appropriate surgical planning, because the prevalence of ectopic insertion is around 20%. The preoperative detection of anomalous insertion of pectoralis minor can be crucial in minimizing the incidences of iatrogenic injuries of tendon or post-operative complications.

RESUMO

The article is presenting a bioinformatics based method predicting susceptibility for SARS-CoV-2 infection in domestic and wildlife animals. Recently, there were reports of cats and ferrets, dogs, minks, golden hamster, rhesus monkeys, tigers, and lions testing for SARS-CoV-2 RNA which indicated for the possible interspecies viral transmission. Our method successfully predicted the susceptibility of these animals for contracting SARS-CoV-2 infection. This method can be used as a screening tool for guiding viral RNA testing for domestic and wildlife animals at risk of getting COVID-19. We provide a list of the animals at risk of developing COVID-19 based on the susceptibility score.

Manifestation of neurological symptoms in certain patients of coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) has warranted for their virus-induced etiogenesis. SARS-CoV-2, the causative agent of COVID-19, belongs to the genus of betacoronaviruses which also includes SARS-CoV-1 and MERS-CoV; causative agents for severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) in 2002 and Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS) in 2012, respectively. Studies demonstrating the neural invasion of SARS-CoV-2 in vivo are still scarce, although such characteristics of certain other betacoronaviruses are well demonstrated in the literature. Based on the recent evidence for the presence of SARS-CoV-2 host cell entry receptors in specific components of the human nervous and vascular tissue, a neural (olfactory and/or vagal), and a hematogenous-crossing the blood-brain barrier, routes have been proposed. The neurological symptoms in COVID-19 may also arise as a consequence of the "cytokine storm" (characteristically present in severe disease) induced neuroinflammation, or co-morbidities. There is also a possibility that, there may be multiple routes of SARS-CoV-2 entry into the brain, or multiple mechanisms can be involved in the pathogenesis of the neurological symptoms. In this review article, we have discussed the possible routes of SARS-CoV-2 brain entry based on the emerging evidence for this virus, and that available for other betacoronaviruses in literature.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is the most aggressive subtype of malignant gliomas, with an average survival rate of 15 months after diagnosis. More than 90% of all GBMs have activating mutations in the MAPK/ERK pathway. Recently, we showed the allosteric MEK1/2 inhibitor binimetinib (MEK162) to inhibit cell proliferation and to enhance the effect of radiation in preclinical human GBM models. Because the free drug cannot pass the blood-brain barrier (BBB), we investigated the use of nanocarriers for transport of the drug through the BBB and its efficacy when combined with radiotherapy and temozolomide (TMZ) in glioma spheroids. METHODS: In vitro studies were performed using multicellular U87 human GBM spheroids. Polymeric nanocarriers (polymersomes) were loaded with MEK162. The interaction between nanocarrier delivered MEK162, irradiation and TMZ was studied on the kinetics of spheroid growth and on protein expression in the MAPK/ERK pathway. BBB passaging was evaluated in a transwell system with human cerebral microvascular endothelial (hCMEC/D3) cells. RESULTS: MEK162 loaded polymersomes inhibited spheroid growth. A synergistic effect was found in combination with fractionated irradiation and an additive effect with TMZ on spheroid volume reduction. Fluorescent labeled polymersomes were taken up by human cerebral microvascular endothelial cells and passed the BBB in vitro. CONCLUSION: MEK162 loaded polymersomes are taken up by multicellular spheroids. The nanocarrier delivered drug reduced spheroid growth and inhibited its molecular target. MEK162 delivered via polymersomes showed interaction with irradiation and TMZ. The polymersomes crossed the in vitro BBB model and therewith offer exciting challenges ahead for delivery of therapeutics agents to brain tumours.

RESUMO

Glioblastoma is the most common and malignant form of brain cancer, for which the standard treatment is maximal surgical resection, radiotherapy and chemotherapy. Despite these interventions, mean overall survival remains less than 15 months, during which extensive tumor infiltration throughout the brain occurs. The resulting metastasized cells in the brain are characterized by chemotherapy resistance and extensive intratumoral heterogeneity. An orthogonal approach attacking both intracellular resistance mechanisms as well as intercellular heterogeneity is necessary to halt tumor progression. For this reason, we established the WINDOW Consortium (Window for Improvement for Newly Diagnosed patients by Overcoming disease Worsening), in which we are establishing a strategy for rational selection and development of effective therapies against glioblastoma. Here, we overview the many challenges posed in treating glioblastoma, including selection of drug combinations that prevent therapy resistance, the need for drugs that have improved blood brain barrier penetration and strategies to counter heterogeneous cell populations within patients. Together, this forms the backbone of our strategy to attack glioblastoma.

BACKGROUND: Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is the most common, invasive and deadly primary type of malignant brain tumor. The Phosphatidylinositol-3-Kinase/AKT (PI3K/AKT) pathway is highly active in GBM and has been associated with increased survival and resistance to therapy. The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of AKT inhibition in combination with the current standard of care which consists of irradiation and temozolomide (TMZ) on human malignant glioma cells growing adherent and as multicellular spheroids in vitro. METHODS: The effects of the allosteric inhibitor MK2206 combined with irradiation and TMZ were assessed on glioma cells growing adherent and as multicellular 3D spheroids. The interaction was studied on proliferation, clonogenic cell survival, cell invasion, -migration and on expression of key proteins in the PI3K-AKT pathway by western blot. RESULTS: A differential effect was found at low- (1 µM) and high dose (10 µM) MK2206. At 1 µM, the inhibitor reduced phosphorylation of Thr308 and Ser473 residues of AKT in both adherent cells and spheroids. Low dose MK2206 delayed spheroid growth and sensitized spheroids to both irradiation and TMZ in a synergistic way (Combination index <0.35). In contrast, neither low nor high dose MK2206 did enhance therapy sensitivity in adherent growing cells. Effective inhibition of invasion and migration was observed only at higher doses of MK2206 (>5 µM). CONCLUSIONS: The data show that a 3D spheroid model show different sensitivity to irradiation when combined with AKT inhibition. Thereby we show that MK2206 has potential synergistic efficacy to the current standard of care for glioma patients.

BACKGROUND: Post-burn axillary and elbow scar contracture is a challenging problem to the reconstructive surgeon owing to the wide range of abduction and extension that should be achieved, respectively, while treating either of the joint. The aim of this paper is to highlight the use of subcutaneous pedicle propeller flap for the management of post-burn axillary and elbow contractures. METHODOLOGY: This is a prospective case study of axillary and elbow contractures managed at a tertiary care hospital using propeller flap based on subcutaneous pedicle from 2009 to 2014. Surgical treatment comprised of subcutaneous-based pedicle propeller flap from the normal tissue within the contracture based on central axis pedicle. The flap was rotated axially to break the contracture. The technique further encompassed a modification, a Zig-Zag incision of the flap, which was seen to prevent hypertrophy along the incision line. There was a mean period of 12 months of follow-up. RESULTS: Thirty-eight patients consisting of 22 males and 16 females were included in this study among which 23 patients had Type II axillary contractures and 15 had moderate flexion contractures at elbow joint. The post-operative abduction achieved at shoulder joint had a mean of 168° whereas extension achieved at elbow had a mean of 175°. The functional and aesthetic results were satisfactory. CONCLUSION: The choice of surgical procedure for reconstruction of post-burn upper extremity contractures should be made according to the pattern of scar contracture and the state of surrounding skin. The choice of subcutaneous pedicle propeller flap should be emphasised because of the superior functional results of flap as well as ease to learn it. Moreover, the modification of propeller flap described achieves better results in terms of scar healing. There is an inter-positioning of healthy skin in between the graft, so it prevents scar band formation all around the flap.

RESUMO

This paper presents the machine learning based machine translation system for Hindi to English, which learns the semantically correct corpus. The quantum neural based pattern recognizer is used to recognize and learn the pattern of corpus, using the information of part of speech of individual word in the corpus, like a human. The system performs the machine translation using its knowledge gained during the learning by inputting the pair of sentences of Devnagri-Hindi and English. To analyze the effectiveness of the proposed approach, 2600 sentences have been evaluated during simulation and evaluation. The accuracy achieved on BLEU score is 0.7502, on NIST score is 6.5773, on ROUGE-L score is 0.9233, and on METEOR score is 0.5456, which is significantly higher in comparison with Google Translation and Bing Translation for Hindi to English Machine Translation.

BACKGROUND: Axillary post-burn scar contracture is a challenging problem to the reconstructive surgeon owing to the wide range of abduction that should be achieved. The aim of this paper was to highlight the various options used in managing axillary contractures in our hospital. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This is a retrospective hospital-based study of axillary contractures managed at Safdarjung Hospital (a tertiary care hospital) from 2009 to 2013. The study consisted of 44 patients from all age group and both sex included in it. Patients with a bilateral axillary contracture were excluded. Axillary contracture was released and resurfaced using split skin graft and/or with different types of flaps including the propeller flap, parascapular flap. All the reconstructed cases were followed-up for a period of 12 months. Assessment was done on the basis of functional and aesthetic outcome. RESULTS: Forty-four patients consisting of 25 males and 19 females presented with axillary contractures that involved 44 axillae. The mean age of the study group was 17.1 years. Injuries involved the anterior axillary fold in 8 (18.18%), posterior fold in ten (22.72%), both folds and axillary fossa in 14 (31.81%) and both folds plus part of the chest wall and arm (sparing the axillary fossa) in 12 (27.27%) axillae. Surgical treatment included split-thickness skin graft in 15 (34.1%), local skin flaps in 4 (9.1%), Z-plasties in 4 (9.1%), parascapular flaps in 3 (6.82%), while propeller flaps in 12 (27.27%) and square flap were used in 6 (13.64%) patients. The percentage of improvement in abduction had a mean of 156°. The functional and aesthetic results were satisfactory. CONCLUSION: The choice of surgical procedure for reconstruction of post-burn axillary contractures can be made according to the pattern of scar contracture and the state of the surrounding skin. The choice of a flap should have priority over the skin graft because of the superior functional and aesthetic results of flaps.

The genitofemoral nerve (GFN) presents with a variable course in nearly half of the population. This variation can be seen in its availability, course, and branching. Here, a notable case during a cadaveric dissection revealed an unusually high bifurcation of the GFN on the left side, contrasting with the typical bifurcation observed on the right. This divergence was highlighted using colored markers to aid educational visualization, facilitating a comprehensive learning experience about the nerve's variability and its functional implications, such as the cremasteric reflex. Embryologically, these variations stem from the migratory paths of myotomes during development, influenced by extrinsic signals and growth factors. Despite the high incidence of anatomical variability, the muscular structure remains consistent, suggesting that the nerve's formation is more susceptible to developmental shifts than the muscles it innervates. Clinically, understanding GFN variations is crucial due to the nerve's involvement in conditions like genitofemoral neuropathy, which can arise from surgical procedures. Accurate knowledge of these variations aids in precise diagnostic and therapeutic interventions, reducing complications, and enhancing patient outcomes in lower abdominal and groin surgeries. However, further research is needed to elucidate the exact embryological and genetic underpinnings of these variations.

Background The field of radiology relies on accurate interpretation of medical images for effective diagnosis and patient care. Recent advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) and natural language processing have sparked interest in exploring the potential of AI models in assisting radiologists. However, limited research has been conducted to assess the performance of AI models in radiology case interpretation, particularly in comparison to human experts. Objective This study aimed to evaluate the performance of ChatGPT, Google Bard, and Bing in solving radiology case vignettes (Fellowship of the Royal College of Radiologists 2A [FRCR2A] examination style questions) by comparing their responses to those provided by two radiology residents. Methods A total of 120 multiple-choice questions based on radiology case vignettes were formulated according to the pattern of FRCR2A examination. The questions were presented to ChatGPT, Google Bard, and Bing. Two residents wrote the examination with the same questions in 3 hours. The responses generated by the AI models were collected and compared to the answer keys and explanation of the answers was rated by the two radiologists. A cutoff of 60% was set as the passing score. Results The two residents (63.33 and 57.5%) outperformed the three AI models: Bard (44.17%), Bing (53.33%), and ChatGPT (45%), but only one resident passed the examination. The response patterns among the five respondents were significantly different ( p = 0.0117). In addition, the agreement among the generative AI models was significant (intraclass correlation coefficient [ICC] = 0.628), but there was no agreement between the residents (Kappa = -0.376). The explanation of generative AI models in support of answer was 44.72% accurate. Conclusion Humans exhibited superior accuracy compared to the AI models, showcasing a stronger comprehension of the subject matter. All three AI models included in the study could not achieve the minimum percentage needed to pass an FRCR2A examination. However, generative AI models showed significant agreement in their answers where the residents exhibited low agreement, highlighting a lack of consistency in their responses.

The exocrine part of the pancreas has a duct system called the pancreatic ductal system (PDS). Its mechanism of development is complex, and any reorganization during early embryogenesis can give rise to anatomical variants. The aim of this study is to collect, classify, and analyze published evidence on the importance of anatomical variants of the PDS, addressing gaps in our understanding of such variations. The MEDLINE, Web of Science, Embase, and Google Scholar databases were searched to identify publications relevant to this review. R studio with meta-package was used for data extraction, risk of bias estimation, and statistical analysis. A total of 64 studies out of 1,778 proved suitable for this review and metanalysis. The meta-analysis computed the prevalence of normal variants of the PDS (92% of 10,514 subjects). Type 3 variants and "descending" subtypes of the main pancreatic duct (MPD) predominated in the pooled samples. The mean lengths of the MPD and accessory pancreatic duct (APD) were 16.53 cm and 3.36 cm, respectively. The mean diameters of the MPD at the head and the APD were 3.43 mm and 1.69 mm, respectively. The APD was present in only 41% of samples, and the long type predominated. The pancreatic ductal anatomy is highly variable, and the incorrect identification of variants may be challenging for surgeons during ductal anastomosis with gut, failure to which may often cause ductal obstruction or pseudocysts formation.

The existence of a previously unrecognized subarachnoid lymphatic-like membrane (SLYM) was reported in a recent study. SLYM is described as an intermediate leptomeningeal layer between the arachnoid and pia mater in mouse and human brains, which divides the subarachnoid space (SAS) into two functional compartments. Being a macroscopic structure, having missed detection in previous studies is surprising. We systematically reviewed the published reports in animals and humans to explore whether prior descriptions of this meningeal layer were reported in some way. A comprehensive search was conducted in PubMed/Medline, EMBASE, Google Scholar, Science Direct, and Web of Science databases using combinations of MeSH terms and keywords with Boolean operators from inception until 31 December 2023. We found at least eight studies that provided structural evidence of an intermediate leptomeningeal layer in the brain or spinal cord. However, unequivocal descriptions for this layer all along the central nervous system were scarce. Obscure names like the epipial, intermediate meningeal, outer pial layers, or intermediate lamella were used to describe it. Its microscopic/ultrastructural details closely resemble the recently reported SLYM. We further examined the counterarguments in current literature that are skeptical of the existence of this layer. The potential physiological and clinical implications of this new meningeal layer are significant, underscoring the urgent need for further exploration of its structural and functional details.

Objective: The present study was conducted to collect morphometric data on the lumbar vertebrae pedicles of the adult population from the eastern parts of India and analyse the variations, if any, with other parts of the country and the world. Methods: The retrospective cross-sectional study where lumbar pedicle morphometric data was obtained via dried bone, the 3D Lumbar vertebrae images were obtained by scanning the dried lumbar vertebrae, and the 3D lumbar vertebrae model was generated from a 1 mm thin CT scan slice of the Lumbar spine of patients who were advised to have a CT scan of the abdomen for reasons other than related to the vertebral column. Both linear and angular measurements in the lumbar pedicles were made bilaterally. Results: The transverse pedicle width is widest at L3 and the narrowest at L2 vertebra bilaterally. The sagittal pedicle width at L4 vertebrae was observed to be the widest bilaterally, while L3 had the narrowest pedicle. The pedicular and body length along the pedicular axis is longer than the central axis at all the lumbar levels. The linear measurement along the pedicular axis was longest at L5 bilaterally via both modes, with a range of 18.2-47.31 mm for bones and 21.03-49.28 mm for CT scan morphometry. The transverse pedicular angle on analysis was observed to increase as one goes down the spine from L1 to L5, with a steep rise between L4 and L5. In contrast, the sagittal pedicular angle decreased as we went caudally toward the L5 vertebrae. Conclusion: The present study data had significant differences among the values reported in the literature from the different populations for the parameters studied. The data obtained by this study will be highly beneficial for the success of the free-hand technique of pedicle screw insertion.
