RESUMO

This Letter reports one of the most precise measurements to date of the antineutrino spectrum from a purely ^{235}U-fueled reactor, made with the final dataset from the PROSPECT-I detector at the High Flux Isotope Reactor. By extracting information from previously unused detector segments, this analysis effectively doubles the statistics of the previous PROSPECT measurement. The reconstructed energy spectrum is unfolded into antineutrino energy and compared with both the Huber-Mueller model and a spectrum from a commercial reactor burning multiple fuel isotopes. A local excess over the model is observed in the 5-7 MeV energy region. Comparison of the PROSPECT results with those from commercial reactors provides new constraints on the origin of this excess, disfavoring at 2.0 and 3.7 standard deviations the hypotheses that antineutrinos from ^{235}U are solely responsible and noncontributors to the excess observed at commercial reactors, respectively.

This Letter reports the first measurement of the ^{235}U ν[over ¯]_{e} energy spectrum by PROSPECT, the Precision Reactor Oscillation and Spectrum experiment, operating 7.9 m from the 85 MW_{th} highly enriched uranium (HEU) High Flux Isotope Reactor. With a surface-based, segmented detector, PROSPECT has observed 31678±304(stat) ν[over ¯]_{e}-induced inverse beta decays, the largest sample from HEU fission to date, 99% of which are attributed to ^{235}U. Despite broad agreement, comparison of the Huber ^{235}U model to the measured spectrum produces a χ^{2}/ndf=51.4/31, driven primarily by deviations in two localized energy regions. The measured ^{235}U spectrum shape is consistent with a deviation relative to prediction equal in size to that observed at low-enriched uranium power reactors in the ν[over ¯]_{e} energy region of 5-7 MeV.

Solid-state density functional theory (DFT), molecular dynamics (MD), and terahertz (THz) spectroscopy were used to study the formation of enantiotropically related conformational Form I and Form II polymorphs of the pharmaceutical compound, probucol. DFT calculations were performed on the crystal systems to compare relative lattice energies and the solvent stabilization of the metastable Form II structure. The thermodynamics of solvent inclusion in the Form II·MeOH crystal system were determined from MD simulations, as was the favored conformation of molecular probucol in methanol and ethanol solutions. The findings from both solid-state DFT and MD calculations suggest that the preferred molecular orientations of the probucol molecule in solution and the probable inclusion of methanol in the crystal lattice during the crystallization process lead to the solvent selectivity of the probucol polymorph formation. The additional stabilization energy provided by the crystallization solvent facilitates the nucleation and growth of the Form II polymorph under conditions that favor this metastable crystal form over the thermodynamically stable Form I, despite the higher energy molecular and crystalline configurations of probucol Form II. We demonstrate the influence of solvent on the formation of pharmaceutical polymorphs and provide a molecular-level view of complex interactions leading to polymorphism using a combination of computational methods and THz spectral data.

New results are reported from the operation of the PICO-60 dark matter detector, a bubble chamber filled with 52 kg of C_{3}F_{8} located in the SNOLAB underground laboratory. As in previous PICO bubble chambers, PICO-60 C_{3}F_{8} exhibits excellent electron recoil and alpha decay rejection, and the observed multiple-scattering neutron rate indicates a single-scatter neutron background of less than one event per month. A blind analysis of an efficiency-corrected 1167-kg day exposure at a 3.3-keV thermodynamic threshold reveals no single-scattering nuclear recoil candidates, consistent with the predicted background. These results set the most stringent direct-detection constraint to date on the weakly interacting massive particle (WIMP)-proton spin-dependent cross section at 3.4×10^{-41} cm^{2} for a 30-GeV c^{-2} WIMP, more than 1 order of magnitude improvement from previous PICO results.

RESUMO

New data are reported from the operation of a 2 liter C3F8 bubble chamber in the SNOLAB underground laboratory, with a total exposure of 211.5 kg days at four different energy thresholds below 10 keV. These data show that C3F8 provides excellent electron-recoil and alpha rejection capabilities at very low thresholds. The chamber exhibits an electron-recoil sensitivity of <3.5×10(-10) and an alpha rejection factor of >98.2%. These data also include the first observation of a dependence of acoustic signal on alpha energy. Twelve single nuclear recoil event candidates were observed during the run. The candidate events exhibit timing characteristics that are not consistent with the hypothesis of a uniform time distribution, and no evidence for a dark matter signal is claimed. These data provide the most sensitive direct detection constraints on WIMP-proton spin-dependent scattering to date, with significant sensitivity at low WIMP masses for spin-independent WIMP-nucleon scattering.

RESUMO

We report on a search for neutrinoless double-beta decay of 136Xe with EXO-200. No signal is observed for an exposure of 32.5 kg yr, with a background of ∼1.5×10(-3) kg(-1) yr(-1) keV(-1) in the ±1σ region of interest. This sets a lower limit on the half-life of the neutrinoless double-beta decay T(1/2)(0νßß)(136Xe)>1.6×10(25) yr (90% C.L.), corresponding to effective Majorana masses of less than 140-380 meV, depending on the matrix element calculation.

RESUMO

The COVID-19 pandemic is a major shock to society in terms of health and economy that is affecting both UK and global food and nutrition security. It is adding to the 'perfect storm' of threats to society from climate change, biodiversity loss and ecosystem degradation, at a time of considerable change, rising nationalism and breakdown in international collaboration. In the UK, the situation is further complicated due to Brexit. The UK COVID-19 F ood and N utrition S ecurity project, lasting one year, is funded by the Economic and Social Research Council and is assessing the ongoing impact of COVID-19 on the four pillars of food and nutrition security: access, availability, utilisation and stability. It examines the food system, how it is responding, and potential knock on effects on the UK's food and nutrition security, both in terms of the cascading risks from the pandemic and other threats. The study provides an opportunity to place the initial lessons being learnt from the on-going responses to the pandemic in respect of food and nutrition security in the context of other long-term challenges such as climate change and biodiversity loss.

Reactor neutrino experiments have seen major improvements in precision in recent years. With the experimental uncertainties becoming lower than those from theory, carefully considering all sources of ν ¯ e is important when making theoretical predictions. One source of ν ¯ e that is often neglected arises from the irradiation of the nonfuel materials in reactors. The ν ¯ e rates and energies from these sources vary widely based on the reactor type, configuration, and sampling stage during the reactor cycle and have to be carefully considered for each experiment independently. In this article, we present a formalism for selecting the possible ν ¯ e sources arising from the neutron captures on reactor and target materials. We apply this formalism to the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, the ν ¯ e source for the the Precision Reactor Oscillation and Spectrum Measurement (PROSPECT) experiment. Overall, we observe that the nonfuel ν ¯ e contributions from HFIR to PROSPECT amount to 1% above the inverse beta decay threshold with a maximum contribution of 9% in the 1.8-2.0 MeV range. Nonfuel contributions can be particularly high for research reactors like HFIR because of the choice of structural and reflector material in addition to the intentional irradiation of target material for isotope production. We show that typical commercial pressurized water reactors fueled with low-enriched uranium will have significantly smaller nonfuel ν ¯ e contribution.

Meteorologists and climatologists have produced significant new data on the fluid dynamics of the atmosphere, thus allowing biologists to examine more closely the cause-effect relation between the large-scale structure of the atmosphere and the dominant patterns of global biogeography. The inability to characterize the high-frequency variability of the weather has constrained such efforts. A method that allows year-to-year patterns of weather variability to be characterized in the contexts of global warming and cooling trends is applied in a combined analysis of long-term monthly weather records and data from an ecological monitoring project in southern New Mexico. The analysis suggests a cause-effect hypothesis of recent desertification in the North American Southwest. The links between the atmosphere and the biosphere are based on the fundamentally different responses to specific weather regimes of semidesert grasses with a C(4) photosynthetic pathway and desert shrubs with a C(3) photosynthetic pathway. The hypothesis appears to be of sufficient generality to explain the complex, but well-documented, floristic changes that have occurred in the same region since the last glacial maximum.

The effects of increasing carbon dioxide (CO2) and climate on net carbon storage in terrestrial ecosystems of the conterminous United States for the period 1895-1993 were modeled with new, detailed historical climate information. For the period 1980-1993, results from an ensemble of three models agree within 25%, simulating a land carbon sink from CO2 and climate effects of 0.08 gigaton of carbon per year. The best estimates of the total sink from inventory data are about three times larger, suggesting that processes such as regrowth on abandoned agricultural land or in forests harvested before 1980 have effects as large as or larger than the direct effects of CO2 and climate. The modeled sink varies by about 100% from year to year as a result of climate variability.

RESUMO

We describe a sensor for the measurement of thin dielectric layers capable of operation in a variety of environments. The sensor is obtained by microfabricating a capacitor with interleaved aluminum fingers, exposed to the dielectric to be measured. In particular, the device can measure thin layers of solid frozen from a liquid or gaseous medium. Sensitivity to single atomic layers is achievable in many configurations and, by utilizing fast, high sensitivity capacitance readout in a feedback system onto environmental parameters; coatings of few layers can be dynamically maintained. We discuss the design, readout, and calibration of several versions of the device optimized in different ways. We specifically dwell on the case in which atomically thin solid xenon layers are grown and stabilized, in cryogenic conditions, from a liquid xenon bath.

Stubby-root nematodes of the genus Paratrichodorus are migratory ectoparasites that cause stunted and deformed roots. They also transmit Tobacco rattle virus, the causal agent of corky ringspot disease in potato. Thus, they are important to the potato industry in the Pacific Northwest, including the Columbia Basin of Washington state, which is one of the largest potato-producing regions in the United States. Stubby-root nematode species are difficult to identify because the morphological differences between the species are very small (4). Paratrichodorus teres is a morphologically similar species and has been reported mainly from temperate regions within Europe. P. teres has also been reported in potato fields in eastern Oregon (3). The morphological similarity between P. allius and P. teres creates problems for routine identification because trichodorid species have a conservative morphology and are separated by the following primary characteristics: females, type of genital system and vulva position; males, number of ventromedian precloacal supplements and cervical papillae and habitus (2). As with most soil nematodes, females are more prevalent than the males. Unfortunately, in the generic key (2), female P. allius and P. teres belong to subgroup 1-12 and are separated by a secondary characteristic, vaginal shape that could be affected by fixation or handling. Male P. allius and P. teres are separated by the former species having one fewer ventromedian precloacal supplement. Thus, the morphological similarity between P. allius and P. teres creates problems for routine identification. This might be one of the reasons that P. teres has not been diagnosed in Washington until now. Using nematode morphological diagnostic keys (1,2) and comparing 18S rDNA sequence data obtained from specimens with those listed on public sequence databases, e.g., NCBI GenBank, stubby-root nematodes from two potato fields close to Moses Lake, Grant County, WA, were diagnosed as P. teres. The two adjacent potato fields are irrigated and are situated approximately 100 miles from the eastern Oregon site where P. teres was first described (3). Soil samples were collected from several Columbia Basin potato fields that had corky ringspot disease and stubby-root nematodes. Corky ringspot disease is an emerging disease in Washington, and the presence of a new viruliferous nematode species might be of concern to the potato industry. References: (1) W. Decraemer. The polyphagous stubby-root nematode species, Paratrichodorus teres (Hooper) Siddiqi, was first described from soil under lettuce near Norwich, UK and subsequently reported from South Africa and the United States, but predominantly from temperate regions within Europe (4). P. teres is one of 13 economically important trichodorid species known to be vectors of Tobacco rattle virus (TRV) (4). Artichokes planted during 2000 in a field located in the Kandia area of the Argolis Region, Greece (37°32'N, 22°56'E) exhibited symptoms of a virus infection. Sampling was done to ascertain the presence of Longidorus fasciatus, a vector of artichoke Italian latent nepovirus known to occur in the area (1,4). In addition to L. fasciatus, an unknown trichodorid species and Tylenchorhyncus sp. were recovered from the root zone of artichoke at a number of sites within the field. Measurements and morphological examination of the female (n = 13, body length = 741.7 ± 25.5 µm, onchiostyle = 43.7 ± 0.8 µm, and position of vulva from anterior region relative to total body length V% = 53.8 ± 0.4 µm) and male (n =1, body length = 720.5 µm, onchiostyle = 43.5 µm, spicule length = 51.7 µm, and number of ventromedian precloacal supplements = 3) trichodorids isolated from soil samples conformed to the original description of P. teres and the generic polytomous key (2). Furthermore, morphological identification was supported by molecular data. DNA was extracted from seven individual trichodorids, each of which were placed into separate 0.5-ml micro-centrifuge tubes containing 20 µl of 0.25 M NaOH and incubated at 25°C overnight. Thereafter, samples were incubated at 99°C for 3 min and 10 µl of 0.25 M HCl, 5 µl of 0.5 M Tris-HCl, (pH 8.0) and 5 µl of 2% Triton X-100 were added to each tube. Samples were incubated at 99°C for a further 3 min and stored at -20°C. Template DNA was amplified using polymerase chain reaction with primers specific for 18S rDNA and sequenced (3). The resultant consensus sequence had 99.8% homology to P. teres populations isolated from Portugal and good homology (95 to 98%) with five other Paratrichodorus spp. listed on public sequence databases, e.g., NCBI GenBank. RESUMO

Climate change affects forests both directly and indirectly through disturbances. Disturbances are a natural and integral part of forest ecosystems, and climate change can alter these natural interactions. When disturbances exceed their natural range of variation, the change in forest structure and function may be extreme. Each disturbance affects forests differently. Some disturbances have tight interactions with the species and forest communities which can be disrupted by climate change. Impacts of disturbances and thus of climate change are seen over a board spectrum of spatial and temporal scales. Future observations, research, and tool development are needed to further understand the interactions between climate change and forest disturbances.

We report the first isotopic study of an animal host-parasite system. Parasitic, intestinal nematodes, Graphidium strigosum and Passalurus ambiguus, were 15N-enriched relative to their host, the European rabbit Oryctolagus cuniculus, while parasitic cestodes, Cittataenia denticulata and Mosgovoyia pectinata, were 15N-depleted, suggesting different trophic relationships. Host embryos were more similar in their delta 13C and delta 15N values to maternal muscle than were any of the parasites. Coprophagy, the direct recycling of food by the rabbit eating its own faeces, did not lead to isotopic differences between stomach contents and faeces, suggesting that the major point for isotopic discrimination in lagomorph nitrogen metabolism is in the animal rather than in the gut. We conclude that bulk delta 13C and delta 15N can reveal valuable new information about host-parasite relationships, and these could be explored further at the biochemical level using compound-specific isotopic analyses.

Natural abundances of the stable isotope pairs (1)(3)C/(1)(2)C (delta (1)(3)C) and (1)N/(1)N (delta (1)N) have been used previously to study food sources and trophic relationships in soil invertebrates. In this study, delta (1)(3)C and delta (1)N were measured in five species of Longidoridae to investigate the effect of transferring nematodes from one plant host to another. Longidorus elongatus, Paralongidorus maximus, Xiphinema diversicaudatum, X. index, and X. vuittenezi were cultured initially on Lolium perenne, Petunia hybrida, Rubus ideaus, Ficus carica, and Rubus ideaus, respectively, and subsequently transferred to 4-week-old P. hybrida seedlings. After feeding on P. hybrida for 28 days, whole body delta (1)(3)C and delta (1)N values of the three Xiphinema species were depleted (P = 0.001) and enriched (P = 0.001), respectively, compared to nematode populations that had fed solely on the original plant hosts. Similar changes in L. elongatus and P. maximus whole body delta (1)(3)C and delta (1)N were not detected. Changes in whole body delta (1)(3)C are considered to be indicative of the new plant host (P. hybrida), whereas differences in whole body delta (1)N are probably related to the different feeding strategies used by the longidorid nematodes in this study.

This guideline, initially drawn up for use in the UK, is essentially based on ethical principles and should be applicable across other jurisdictions. The document specifically addresses the issues which surround obtaining consent from adults for the administration of systemic anti-cancer therapy in the haemato-oncology setting. Consenting to a treatment or procedure is a complex medical, ethical, and legal issue. The process of obtaining consent and the general steps that should be taken by the healthcare professional involved in obtaining consent from a patient are discussed, and the potential legal and ethical pitfalls which can be encountered are outlined. Of fundamental importance are the requirements that agreement must be given voluntarily, based on adequate information, and the patient must have the ability to understand and retain the information given and be in a position to use it in order to reach a decision. The consenting process should include an explanation of the expected outcomes and possible side effects of treatment even if these are unlikely to occur, and the nature of the consenting process undertaken should be clearly documented. Obtaining consent in an emergency situation is also discussed, as is the process of consenting in individuals with impaired capacity or special needs. Withdrawal of consent and refusal of treatment are also considered.

RESUMO

A magnetically driven piston pump for xenon gas recirculation is presented. The pump is designed to satisfy extreme purity and containment requirements, as is appropriate for the recirculation of isotopically enriched xenon through the purification system and large liquid xenon time projection chamber of EXO-200. The pump, using sprung polymer gaskets, is capable of pumping more than 16 standard liters per minute of xenon gas with 750 Torr differential pressure.
