RESUMO

The ADAM (A Disintegrin And Metalloprotease) gene family encodes proteins with adhesion and proteolytic functions. ADAM proteins are associated with diseases like cancers. Twenty ADAM genes have been identified in humans. However, little is known about the evolution of the family. We analyzed the repertoire of ADAM genes in a vast number of eukaryotic genomes to clarify the main gene copy number expansions. For the first time, we provide compelling evidence that early-branching green algae (Mamiellophyceae) have ADAM genes, suggesting that they originated in the last common ancestor of eukaryotes, before the split of plants, fungi and animals. The ADAM family expanded in early metazoans, with the most significative gene expansion happening during the first steps of vertebrate evolution. We concluded that most of mammal ADAM diversity can be explained by gene duplications in early bone fish. Our data suggest that ADAM genes were lost early in green plant evolution.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: This study compares the osseointegration of machined-zirconia implants containing yttria (M-Y-TZP) with machined (M-Ti) and resorbable blast media (RBM-Ti) titanium implants. MATERIAL AND METHODS: M-Y-TZP, M-Ti and RBM-Ti implants were randomly placed in rabbit tibiae. Fluorochrome bone labels (tetracycline, alizarin and calcein) were administered at different time periods. After 8 weeks, osseointegration was evaluated in terms of bone-to-implant contact (BIC), new bone area (nBA), remaining cortical bone area (rBA) and temporal quantification of fluorochromes, using micro-CT and histomorphometric analyses. RESULTS: RBM-Ti implants showed higher resorption of the remaining cortical bone and bone formation (rBA = 36.9% and nBA = 38.8%) than M-Y-TZP implants (rBA = 48% and nBA = 26.5%). The BIC values showed no differences among the groups in the cortical region (mean = 52.2%) but in the medullary region, they were 0.45-fold higher in the RBM-Ti group (51.2%) than in the M-Y-TZP group (35.2%). In all groups, high incorporation of tetracycline was observed (2nd to 4th weeks), followed by alizarin (4th to 6th weeks) and calcein (6th to 8th weeks). In the cortical region, incorporation of tetracycline was similar between RBM-Ti (49.8%) and M-Y-TZP (35.9%) implants, but higher than M-Ti (28.2%) implants. Subsequently, alizarin and calcein were 1.1-fold higher in RBM-Ti implants than in the other implants. In the medullary region, no significant differences were observed for all fluorochromes. CONCLUSION: All implants favored bone formation and consequently promoted primary stability. Bone formation around the threads was faster in RBM-Ti and M-Y-TZP implants than in M-Ti implants, but limited bone remodeling with M-Y-TZP implants over time can have significant effects on secondary stability, suggesting caution for its use as an alternative substitute for titanium implants.

RESUMO

The present joint experimental and theoretical work provides in-depth understanding on the morphology and structural, electronic, and optical properties of ZnWO4 nanocrystals. Monoclinic ZnWO4 nanocrystals were prepared at three different temperatures (140, 150, and 160 °C) by a microwave hydrothermal method. Then, the samples were investigated by X-ray diffraction with Rietveld refinement analysis, field-emission scanning electron microscopy, transmission electronic microscopy, micro-Raman and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, and photoluminescence measurements. First-principles theoretical calculations within the framework of density functional theory were employed to provide information at the atomic level. The band structure diagram, density of states, Raman and infrared spectra were calculated to understand the effect of structural order-disorder on the properties of ZnWO4. The effects of the synthesis temperature on the above properties were rationalized. The band structure revealed direct allowed transitions between the VB and CB and the experimental results in the ultraviolet-visible region were consistent with the theoretical results. Moreover, the surface calculations allowed the association of the surface energy stabilization with the temperature used in the synthesis of the ZnWO4 nanocrystals. The photoluminescence properties of the ZnWO4 nanocrystals prepared at 140, 150, and 160 °C were attributed to oxygen vacancies in the [WO6] and [ZnO6] clusters, causing a red shift of the spectra. The ZnWO4 nanocrystals obtained at 160 °C exhibited excellent photodegradation of Rhodamine under ultraviolet light irradiation, which was found to be related to the surface energy and the types of clusters formed on the surface of the catalyst.

RESUMO

Accurate cow-side blood ß-hydroxybutyrate (BHB) detection meters are valuable tools for rapid diagnosis of hyperketonemia. The main objective of this study was to compare the blood BHB measured in whole blood by the BHBCheck meter (PortaCheck, Moorestown, NJ) to a previously validated meter, Precision Xtra meter (Abbott Laboratories, Abbott Park, IL) and a colorimetric laboratory assay. Samples (n = 426) were collected from postpartum primiparous and multiparous Holstein cows (n = 79 cows) enrolled in 1 of 2 experiments (Exp) with different sampling schedules (Exp 1: n = 39 cows, 58 samples; Exp 2: n = 40 cows, 368 samples). In both Exp, whole-blood samples were collected from the coccygeal vessels after morning milking, before morning feeding. Blood samples were used immediately for BHB quantification via the BHBCheck meter and the Precision Xtra meter. Blood was also collected into evacuated tubes containing no additive (Exp 1) or potassium oxalate/sodium fluoride (Exp 2), which were centrifuged for serum or plasma separation and stored at -20°C for subsequent analysis. Laboratory quantification of BHB concentration was done by the BHB LiquiColor Assay (EKF Diagnostics-Stanbio, Boerne, TX; certified for serum and plasma). Data were analyzed by UNIVARIATE, CORR, FREQ, REG, and LOGISTIC procedures of SAS 9.4 (SAS Institute Inc., Cary, NC). Within this sample set, average parity was 3.3 lactations and DIM was 14 d. The proportion of samples classified as hyperketonemia (BHB ≥1.2 mmol/L) was 25, 28, and 31% as determined by the colorimetric assay, BHBCheck meter, and Precision Xtra meter, respectively. The correlation for BHBCheck meter BHB concentration compared with the colorimetric assay concentrations was r = 0.96, with a sensitivity of 91% and specificity of 93%. Correlation, sensitivity, and specificity of the Precision Xtra meter concentrations were 0.97, 98%, and 92%, respectively. Bland-Altman plots demonstrated minimal bias for both meters. Area under the receiver operator characteristic curve suggests adequate diagnostic accuracy of both meters. Overall, accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity of the BHBCheck meter was similar to the Precision Xtra meter and laboratory assay, indicating the BHBCheck meter is appropriate for use as a cow-side diagnostic test for hyperketonemia in dairy cows.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to assess the nutritional quality of food products marketed at children, with and without nutrient claims, using two different approaches. METHODS: Analyses were performed based on a data set with food composition and labelling data from every packaged food marketed at children sold in a major Brazilian supermarket (n=535). Foods were classified as 'healthier' and 'less healthy' according to the UK/Ofcom nutrient profile model and to the NOVA classification based on the level of food processing. Pearson's χ2 test was used to compare proportions between models. Agreement was assessed using Cohen's κ-statistic (P<0.05). RESULTS: The NOVA model was stricter than the UK/Ofcom model, classifying more products as 'less healthy' (91.4%) compared with the nutrient profile-based model (75.0%; P<0.001). Agreement between models was 79.4% (k=0.30), because 72.9% (n=390) of products were categorised as 'less healthy' by both models, and 6.5% (n=35) as 'healthier'. Half of the food products marketed at children from the database (270; 50.5%) bore nutrient claims. From these products with nutrient claims, 95.9% (92.8-98.0) were classified as 'less healthy' by the NOVA model, whereas this percentage was 74.1% (68.4-79.2) according to the UK/Ofcom model (P<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The high number of foods with low nutritional quality being marketed at children via product packaging and nutrient claims should be of concern to policy makers wanting to improve children's diets and to tackle childhood obesity. The implementation of nutritional quality criteria to ensure that foods targeted at children should be eligible to bear nutrient claims on their labels could avoid a situation where claims mask the overall nutritional status of a food.

RESUMO

This paper describes the diversity of rodent fauna in an area endemic for hantavirus cardiopulmonary syndrome (HCPS) in Brazil, the population dynamics and the relationship of rodents with hantavirus in the Cerrado (savanna-like) biome. Additionally, an analysis is made of the partial S segment sequences of the hantaviruses obtained from serologically confirmed human HCPS cases and from rodent specimens. Rodents were collected during four campaigns. Human serum samples were collected from suspected cases of HCPS at hospitals in the state of Minas Gerais. The samples antibody-reactive by ELISA were processed by RT-PCR. The PCR product was amplified and sequenced. Hantavirus was detected only in Necromys lasiurus, the wild rodent species most prevalent in the Cerrado biome (min-max: 50-83·7%). All the six human serum samples were hantavirus seropositive and five showed amplified PCR products. The analysis of the nucleotide sequences showed the circulation of a single genotype, the Araraquara hantavirus. The environmental changes that have occurred in the Cerrado biome in recent decades have favoured N. lasiurus in interspecific competition of habitats, thus increasing the risk of contact between humans and rodent species infected with hantavirus. Our data corroborate the definition of N. lasiurus as the main hantavirus reservoir in the Cerrado biome.

RESUMO

Hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS) is the most frequently reported fatal rodent-borne disease in Brazil, with the majority of cases occurring in Santa Catarina. We analysed the clinical, laboratory and epidemiological data of the 251 confirmed cases of HPS in Santa Catarina in 1999-2011. The number of cases ranged from 10 to 47 per year, with the highest incidences in 2004-2006. Gastrointestinal tract manifestations were found in >60% of the cases, potentially confounding diagnosis and leading to inappropriate therapy. Dyspnoea, acute respiratory failure, renal failure, increased serum creatinine and urea levels, increased haematocrits and the presence of pulmonary interstitial infiltrate were significantly more common in HPS patients who died. In addition, we demonstrated that the six cases from the midwest region of the state were associated with Juquitiba virus genotype. The case-fatality rate in this region, 19·2%, was lower than that recorded for other mesoregions. In the multivariate analysis increase of serum creatinine and urea was associated with death by HPS. Our findings help elucidate the epidemiology of HPS in Brazil, where mast seeding of bamboo can trigger rodent population eruptions and subsequent human HPS outbreaks. We also emphasize the need for molecular confirmation of the hantavirus genotype of human cases for a better understanding of the mortality-related factors associated with HPS cases in Brazil.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of allergic diseases is increasing. We evaluated temporal trends in the prevalence of asthma, rhinitis and eczema in adolescents (13-14 years) living in Taubaté, SP, Brazil (2005-2012) and assessed the relationship between these prevalences and the residential proximity to Presidente Dutra Highway (PDH, a heavily travelled highway). METHODS: This cross-sectional study of adolescents (N=1039) from public and private schools was evaluated using the standard questionnaire of the International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood (ISAAC) plus a question about their place of residence in relation to PDH. The data obtained were compared to the 2005 data using a chi-square test or Fisher's exact test. An analysis by groups consisting of two phases (two-step cluster) was used to evaluate the effect of living near PDH. RESULTS: There was a lifetime increase in the prevalence of active asthma (15.3% vs. 20.4%, p=0.005) and physician-diagnosed asthma (6.8% vs. 9.2%, p=0.06) and a decrease in the symptoms of active rhinitis (36.6% vs. 18.5%) between 2005 and 2012. A high frequency of asthma and rhinitis (18.1% vs. 23.2%, respectively) was observed among adolescents living close or very close to PDH; furthermore, 85.6% of the adolescents without symptoms of asthma or rhinitis lived far from PDH. CONCLUSION: An increase in the prevalence of asthma and a decrease in the prevalence of rhinitis were observed during the studied period. Living near PDH was associated with higher rates of asthma, rhinitis, and eczema.

RESUMO

The O3-initiated oxidation reactions of α-pinene ([1S,5S]-2,6,6-trimethylbicyclo[3.1.1]hept-2-ene), ß-pinene ([1R,5R]-6,6-dimethyl-2-methylenebicyclo[3.1.1]heptane), camphene ([1R,4S]-2,2-dimethyl-3-methylenebicyclo[2.2.1]heptane) and sabinene ([1R,5R]-4-methylene-1-(1-methylethyl)bicycle[3.1.0]hexane), four monoterpenes typically emitted into the atmosphere, were studied at the B3LYP/6-31+G(2d,2p) level of theory. The rate coefficients were calculated on the basis of the variational transition state theory for two kinetic models, in order to investigate the reaction mechanism: first assuming a direct bimolecular reaction and the second, assuming the formation of a prebarrier-complex, which further reacts forming the corresponding molozonide. The barrier heights leading to the formation of exo-conformers of the molozonides of α-pinene and camphene are lower than the barrier heights for the formation of the endo-conformers of these molozonides, whereas the inverse trend is observed for ß-pinene and sabinene. The canonical variational rate coefficients are found in reasonable agreement with the experimental data, especially when the prebarrier complexes are considered. Microcanonical variational rate coefficients are also calculated, as a final validation test, being found in an expected agreement with the canonical rate coefficients. The best predictions for the rate coefficients at 298 K, based on the microcanonical variational method, for α-pinene, ß-pinene, camphene, and sabine are (in units cm(3) molecule(-1) s(-1)): 6.92 × 10(-17), 1.06 × 10(-17), 4.61 × 10(-19), and 4.81 × 10(-17), respectively. Our results suggest that the prebarrier complex is an important specie in the ozone addition mechanism and should be taken into account for the proper description of the overall kinetics.

RESUMO

This study investigated the variation in growth/no growth boundaries of 188 Escherichia coli strains. Experiments were conducted in Luria-Bertani media under 36 combinations of lactic acid (LA) (0 and 25 mM), pH (3.8, 3.9, 4.0, 4.1, 4.2 and 4.3 for 0 mM LA and 4.3, 4.4, 4.5, 4.6, 4.7 and 4.8 for 25 mM LA) and temperature (20, 25 and 30 °C). After 3 days of incubation, growth was monitored through optical density measurements. For each strain, a so-called purposeful selection approach was used to fit a logistic regression model that adequately predicted the likelihood for growth. Further, to assess the growth/no growth variability for all the strains at once, a generalized linear mixed model was fitted to the data. Strain was fitted as a fixed factor and replicate as a random blocking factor. E. coli O157:H7 strain ATCC 43888 was used as reference strain allowing a comparison with the other strains. Out of the 188 strains tested, 140 strains (∼75%) presented a significantly higher probability of growth under low pH conditions than the O157:H7 strain ATCC 43888, whereas 20 strains (∼11%) showed a significantly lower probability of growth under high pH conditions.

RESUMO

The prepartum supplementation of dairy cows with ß-carotene was evaluated. Cows were blocked by parity and expected calving date and assigned to a treatment: ß-carotene (1.2 g/cow per d) or control (no supplementation). The same total mixed ration batch was offered to all cows, and ß-carotene was top dressed to individual cows once per day. The data set contained 283 Holsteins that received a treatment for >14 d (29.1±6.9 d). Frequency distributions were analyzed with the GENMOD procedure of SAS using logistic regression for binomial data. Continuous variables were analyzed with the MIXED procedure of SAS. Within parity, nonparametric estimates of the survivor function for reproductive variables were computed using the product-limit method of the Kaplan-Meier method with the LIFETEST procedure of SAS. Plasma ß-carotene concentration before supplementation was similar between supplemented and nonsupplemented cows (2.99µg/mL) and peaked at 3.26±0.175µg/mL on d -15±2.4 precalving for supplemented cows (2.62±0.168µg/mL for control). Colostrum density, milk yield, and milk composition were similar between treatments. ß-Carotene tended to increase milk protein content from 2.90 to 2.96% and to decrease the proportion of primiparous cows with a milk fat to protein ratio >1.5 from 22.6 to 6.4%. The proportion of primiparous and multiparous cows with difficult calving, metritis, progesterone >1 ng/mL at 21 d and at 42 d in lactation, % conception at first service, and % pregnancy at 90 and 150 d in lactation were similar between treatments. A trend for decreased incidence of somatic cell count >200,000 cells/mL was present in multiparous cows supplemented with ß-carotene (38.9% vs. 28.1%). ß-Carotene was associated with a reduction in the proportion of multiparous cows with retained placenta 12 h postpartum from 29.9 to 21.7%; time of placenta release was 392 min (340 to 440) for ß-carotene and 490 min (395 to 540) for control (median and 95% confidence interval). For primiparous cows, placenta release was not affected by ß-carotene (incidence was 15.4%). The intervals from calving to first estrus, to first service, and to conception were not affected by ß-carotene supplementation in either parity. However, independent of treatment, cows with improved reproductive efficiency had increased postpartum ß-carotene concentration in plasma. The prepartum supplementation of ß-carotene increased plasma concentration around calving. No response in milk yield or reproductive performance was detected. Beta-carotene supplementation was associated with a lower incidence of retained placenta in multiparous cows.

RESUMO

Anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies (ANCA) are autoantibodies directed to intracellular components of neutrophils and are present in several vasculitic syndromes. Recently, these autoantibodies have been described in other autoimmune disorders as well as in infectious diseases such as tuberculosis (TB). As there are some clinical similarities between TB and granulomatosis with polyangiitis, we searched for ANCA in a group of patients with proven TB. Patients with TB confirmed by chest X-ray and sputum bacilloscopy either before or within 30 days after beginning treatment were included in this study. Anti-MPO and anti-PR3 antibodies were studied using well-standardized ELISA kits (INOVA Diagnostics, Inc.). ANCA were also investigated by indirect immunofluorescence (IIF). Fifty TB patients (26 females, mean age 47.34 ± 17 years) were enrolled in the present study. No patient tested positive for ANCA by IIF, or anti-MPO or anti-PR3 antibodies by ELISA. Although previous studies have shown the presence of ANCA in some infectious diseases, the findings of the present study demonstrated the absence of such antibodies in TB. The discrepancy in the prevalence of ANCA in TB among different studies may be attributed to methodological factors and/or the genetic background of the studied populations.

RESUMO

The crystal of bis(L-alaninate)copper(II) [Cu(C3H6NO2)2] was studied by Raman spectroscopy and synchrotron X-ray diffraction as a function of hydrostatic pressure, and its vibrational and structural behavior were investigated to analyze its stability at high pressures. The Raman spectra of bis(L-alaninate)copper(II) show changes in vibrational modes that are associated with deformations and stretching of units involving the copper atom. These results indicate that molecular fragments involving the copper atom undergo rotations and discontinuities in bond lengths. The lattice parameters of bis(L-alaninate)copper(II) obtained from Le Bail fits also exhibit changes in the same pressure ranges as the Raman spectra. The discontinuities in the angular parameter beta are compatible with the rotations of the molecular fragments. Bis(L-alaninate)copper(II) undergoes changes, but maintains monoclinic symmetry in the range of 0-20.1 GPa.

RESUMO

Grade C periodontitis in young individuals is characterized by severe/rapid periodontal destruction, usually early onset, in systemically healthy individuals. An individual's host response, triggered by a dysbiotic subgingival biofilm, has been reported as a contributor to the tissue destruction, although mechanisms of this response and contributions to such disease remain poorly understood. Nonsurgical treatment has resulted in positive clinical responses for both localized (now molar-incisor pattern) and generalized forms of grade C periodontitis, especially when adjunctive systemic antibiotics are used. Nonsurgical treatment may also affect host responses, although mechanisms leading to significant changes in this response remain unclear. Significant effects on inflammatory response to antigens/bacteria have been described posttreatment, but evidence for long-term effects remains limited. Nonsurgical treatment in these individuals may also modulate a variety of host markers in serum/plasma and gingival crevicular fluid along with clinical parameter improvements. The impact of other adjuncts to nonsurgical treatment focusing on controlling exacerbated immunoinflammatory responses needs to be further explored in grade C periodontitis in young individuals. Recent evidence suggests that nonsurgical treatment with adjunctive laser therapy may modulate host and microbial responses in those subjects, at least in the short term. Available evidence, while very heterogeneous (including variations in disease definition and study designs), does not provide clear conclusions on this topic yet provides important insights for future studies. In this review, studies within the past decade evaluating the impact of nonsurgical treatment on systemic/local host responses in young individuals with grade C periodontitis, as well as long-term clinical responses posttreatment, will be critically appraised and discussed.

RESUMO

Maleic acid was studied by Raman spectroscopy and powder synchrotron X-ray diffraction (XRD) under high pressure conditions by using a diamond anvil cell. The Raman spectroscopy measurements were performed from ambient pressure up to 9.2 GPa in the 100-3200 cm-1 spectral range. While the XRD measurements were performed up to 10.1 GPa. Here we present the pressure-dependence behavior from both the Raman modes and cell parameters. Maleic acid lattice parameters decrease anisotropically as a function of pressure and a reduction of 27% in the volume of the unit cell was observed. Modifications in the material's compressibility were observed at around 2 and 6 GPa.

In this work, a chemical model for the camphene ozonolysis, leading to carbonyl final products, is proposed and discussed on the basis of the thermochemical properties and kinetic data obtained at density functional theory levels of calculation. The mechanism is initiated by the electrophilic attack of ozone to the double bond in camphene leading to a 1,2,3-trioxolane intermediate, which decomposes to peroxy radicals and carbonyl compounds in a total of 10 elementary reactions. The thermodynamic properties (enthalpy and entropies differences) are calculated at 298 K. For the thermochemical evaluation, theoretical calculations are performed with the B3LYP, MPW1PW91, and mPW1K density functionals and the basis sets 6-31G(d), 6-31G(2d,2p), 6-31+G(d,p), and 6-31+G(2d,2p). Eventually, single point calculations adopting the 6-311++G(2d,2p) basis set are performed in order to improve the electronic energies. The enthalpy profiles suggest highly exothermic reactions for the individual steps, with a global enthalpy difference of -179.18 kcal mol(-1), determined at the B3LYP∕6-31+G(2d,2p) level. The Gibbs free energy differences for each step, at 298 K, calculated at the B3LYP∕6-311++G(2d,2p)∕∕B3LYP∕6-31+G(2d,2p) level, are used to estimate the composition of a final product mixture under equilibrium conditions as 58% of camphenilone and 42% of 6,6-dimethyl-ɛ-caprolactone-2,5-methylene. For the reaction kinetics, the bimolecular O(3) + camphene step is assumed to be rate determining in the global mechanism. A saddle point for the ozone addition to the double bond is located and rate constants are determined on the basis of the transition state theory. This saddle point is well represented by a loosely bound structure and corrections for the basis set superposition error (BSSE) are calculated, either by considering the effect over the geometry optimization procedure (here referred as CP1 procedure), or the effect of the BSSE over the electronic energy of a previously optimized geometry, included a posteriori (here referred as CP2). The rate constants, calculated at 298 K from the data obtained at the mPW1K∕6-31+G(d,p), CP1∕B3LYP∕∕6-31+G(2d,2p), and CP2∕B3LYP∕∕6-31+G(2d,2p) levels (3.62 × 10(-18), 1.12 × 10(-18), and 1.39 × 10(-18) cm(3) molecule(-1) s(-1)), are found in good agreement with the available experimental data at the same temperature, 0.9 × 10(-18) cm(3) molecule(-1) s(-1) [R. Atkinson, S. M. Aschmann, and J. Arey, Atmos. Environ. 24, 2647 (1990)]. The importance of the BSSE corrections for the final rate constants must be pointed out. Furthermore, this work will contribute to a better understanding of the chemistry of monoterpenes in the atmosphere, as well as the implications for the phenomena of pollution.

RESUMO

UNLABELLED: BACNKGROUND: There are many foci endemic for Schistosoma (S.) mansoni in Uganda. The immune responses to infection with the parasites in these areas have been found to vary with host sex, age and infection intensity. OBJECTIVE: To determine the profile of antibody isotypes responses against S. mansoni crude soluble egg antigens (SEA) and soluble adult worm protein (SWAP) antigens that determine the host resistance or susceptibility to reinfection. DESIGN: Cross Sectional, cohort study. SETTING: Kigugu fishing village in Entebbe, Uganda. SUBJECTS: Nine hundred and forty five (945) Kigungu residents reported forpre-treatment screening and enrolment and 626 cohorts report for post-treatment screening and enrolment 18 months later. RESULTS: Pearson's Chi-sq2 showed thatincrease in titres of anti (SWAP IgE, SEA IgE, and SEA IgG2) was not significant, but increase in anti SEA IgG3 was significant. Decrease in titres of anti (SWAP IgG1, SEA IgG1, and SEA IgG4) was not significant but decrease of anti (SWAP IgG2, SWAP IgG3 and SWAP IgG4) was significant. Positive correlation existed between age and anti SWAP IgE in before and after treatment sera. On the contrary, age was positively correlated with anti SWAP IgG4 in pre-treatment sera but was negatively correlated with anti SWAP IgG4 in the post-treatment sera. In addition there were positive correlation between higher egg counts and the immunoglobulin levels of anti SWAP IgG4 and anti SEA IgG4 but negative correlations were observed between anti SWAP IgE and anti SEA IgE. Conversely low egg counts were associated with high levels of anti SWAP IgE. Furthermore, IgG1-4, IgE antibody to SEA and SWAP antigens did not differ significantly according to sex. CONCLUSION: We concluded that praziquantel treatment of S. mansoni infected persons alter the immune responses that are influenced by age and intensity. A phenomenon that is useful in the effort to produce vaccine against schistosome.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Diabetic macular edema (DME) is the main cause of visual loss in diabetic patients. Despite the use of anti-VEGF therapy as first-line treatment, there are many patients whose response to treatment is poor or transient at best. Sophisticated laser techniques have emerged aiming at low-intensity retinal damage, avoiding excessive heat that causes tissue necrosis and related collateral effects. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of combined sublethal laser modalities from short-pulse duration (SPD) with endpoint management (EpM) subthreshold laser [named the "sandwich technique" (SWiT)] on central subfield thickness (CST) and best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) in patients with DME. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In this consecutive retrospective study, 37 patients (37 eyes) with center-involved (CI) DME were treated with SWiT laser therapy from April 2017 to June 2021. The technique consisted of a mean number of 200 (range number 50-400) SPD laser burns OCT-guided thickened area performed on the juxta- and perifoveal area 500 µm away from the foveal center, overlapping with a mean number of 1000 (range number 800-1200) EpM laser burns focused on 6 mm macular diameter area but saving 300 µm toward the foveal center. All patients underwent ophthalmological evaluations, including BCVA and CST measurement by spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT), before and after SWiT laser therapy. The mean follow-up time was 19.2 months (range 2-60 months). RESULTS: Thirty-five out of 37 cases showed an improvement in CST and BCVA following treatment. At baseline, mean CST (µm) ± standard error (SE) and mean BCVA (logMAR) ± SE was 456.95 ± 37.00 and 0.71 ± 0.29, respectively. After a mean follow-up of 19.2 months, mean CST (µm) ± SE and BCVA (logMAR) ± SE were 272.09 ± 9.10 (p < 0.0001) and 0.54 ± 0.26 (p = 0.003), respectively. A statistically significant reduction in CST and improvement in BCVA was noted after laser therapy application. The anti-VEGF injection frequency was reduced during the mean 19.2 months of the study period. CONCLUSIONS: The novel "sandwich" laser therapy aid reduced CST and improved BCVA in this retrospective case series. Further prospective studies are warranted.

RESUMO

Crystals of l-asparagine monohydrate doped with Fe(III) were studied by Raman spectroscopy in a diamond anvil cell (DAC) in the spectral range from 100 to 3200 cm-1 and pressures up to 9.2 GPa. The behavior of external modes suggests conformational changes between 3.0 and 4.0 GPa mainly affecting the CH2 group. X-ray diffraction measurements with synchrotron radiation were performed in the angular range from 3 to 12 degrees (2θ) up to 9.3 GPa. The lattice parameters contract up to 9.3 GPa, with the exception of parameter b, which exhibits expansion from 7.2 GPa. The lattice parameters exhibit discontinuities between 3.0 and 4.0 GPa, this effect is compatible with conformational changes. Such modifications occur without a change in symmetry, at least up to 9.3 GPa. Under decompression, down to atmospheric pressure, the original Raman spectrum is recovered, showing that the conformational change and the other changes are all reversible.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Occlusoproximal restorations of primary molars usually fail, so it is necessary to investigate new materials that may overcome this challenge. Thus, this trial aimed to evaluate the longevity of occlusoproximal ART restorations in primary molars using a glass ionomer cement - GIC (Equia Forte® - GC Corp) and a Giomer resin composite - GCR (Beautifil Bulk Restorative® - Shofu Inc) after 24 months. METHODS: One hundred and eighty-two (182) children aged from 4 to 8 years were selected and randomly assigned to GIC or GCR. A paediatric dentist treated them in the school setting in Cerquilho, Brazil, and the restorations were assessed after 3, 6, 12, 18 and 24 months. The primary outcome was the restoration survival, evaluated using the Kaplan-Meier and superiority Cox regression analyses. Intention to treat (ITT) was performed as a sensitivity analysis using superiority test P value and confidence interval (CI = 95%). Independent variables included gender, age, molar, jaw, cavity volume and caries experience. RESULTS: The restoration survival after 24 months was GIC = 58.1% and GCR = 49.1% (HR = 1.24; CI = 0.97-1.59). ITT analysis showed a success of GIC = 61.1% and GCR = 52.2% (RR = 1.17; CI = 0.91-1.52). The superiority hypothesis was not proved in both analyses (P > 0.05). CONCLUSION: GCR does not have superior longevity than GIC in occlusoproximal ART restorations of primary molars.
