RESUMO

Sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) have emerged as a compelling alternative to lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), exhibiting comparable electrochemical performance while capitalizing on the abundant availability of sodium resources. In SIBs, P2/O3 biphasic cathodes, despite their high energy, require furthur improvements in stability to meet current energy demands. This study introduces a systematic methodology that leverages the meta-heuristically assisted NSGA-II algorithm to optimize multi-element doping in electrode materials, aiming to transcend conventional trial-and-error methods and enhance cathode capacity by the synergistic integration of P2 and O3 phases. A comprehensive phase analysis of the meta-heuristically designed cathode material Na0.76Ni0.20Mn0.42Fe0.30Mg0.04Ti0.015Zr0.025O2 (D-NFMO) is presented, showcasing its remarkable initial reversible capacity of 175.5 mAh g-1 and exceptional long-term cyclic stability in sodium cells. The investigation of structural composition and the stabilizing mechanisms is performed through the integration of multiple characterization techniques. Remarkably, the irreversible phase transition of P2→OP4 in D-NFMO is observed to be dramatically suppressed, leading to a substantial enhancement in cycling stability. The comparison with the pristine cathode (P-NFMO) offers profound insights into the long-term electrochemical stability of D-NFMO, highlighting its potential as a high-voltage cathode material utilizing abundant earth elements in SIBs. This study opens up new possibilities for future advancements in sodium-ion battery technology.

RESUMO

A NASICON-structured earth-abundant mixed transition metal (TM) containing Na-TM-phosphate, viz., Na2ZrFe(PO4)3, has been prepared via a sol-gel route using a low-cost Fe3+-based precursor. The as-prepared material crystallizes in the desired rhombohedral NASICON structure (space group: R3̅c) at room temperature. Synchrotron X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy, X-ray absorption spectroscopy, etc., have been performed to determine the crystal structure, associated details, composition, and electronic structures. In light of the structural features, as one of the possible functionalities of Na2FeZr(PO4)3, Na-intercalation/deintercalation has been examined, which indicates the occurrence of reversible electrochemical Na-insertion/extraction via Fe2+/Fe3+ redox at an average potential of ∼2.5 V. The electrochemical data and direct evidences from operando synchrotron XRD indicate that the rhombohedral structure is preserved during Na-insertion/extraction, albeit within a certain range of Na-content (i.e., ∼2-3 p.f.u.), beyond which rhombohedral → monoclinic transformation takes place. Within this range, Na-insertion/extraction takes place via solid-solution pathway, resulting in outstanding cyclic stability, higher Na-diffusivity, and good rate-capability. To the best of the authors' knowledge, this represents the first in-depth structural, compositional, and electrochemical studies with Na2ZrFe(PO4)3, along with the interplay between those, which provide insights into the design of similar low-cost materials for various applications, including sustainable electrochemical energy storage systems.

RESUMO

Solid-state Mössbauer spectra of a highly soluble (µ-oxo)bis[tetra(tert-butyl)(phthalocyaninato)iron(III)] complex 1 ((PctBuFe)2O) consist of two doublets that represent bent geometry in µ-oxo(1) (1a, ΔEQ = 0.43 mm/s, T = 10 K) and linear geometry in µ-oxo(2) (1b, ΔEQ = 1.40 mm/s, T = 10 K) isomers with the ratio between two isomers depending on the purification method. Both isomers were found to be diamagnetic and transform entirely to the 1a isomer in solution. The room- and low-temperature magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) spectra of 1a µ-oxo(1) show one Faraday A- and one B-term between 670 and 720 nm, which correlate with the 690 nm band and 709 nm shoulder observed in the UV-vis spectrum of this compound. UV-vis and MCD spectra of 1a are almost independent of the temperature. Both 1a and 1b are diamagnetic between room temperature and 4 K. Electrochemical experiments show up to three oxidations and up to four reduction processes in 1a. Its oxidation under spectroelectrochemical or chemical (in the absence of oxygen-containing oxidants) conditions in non-coordinating solvents results in the formation of broad NIR bands around 1195 nm (first oxidation) and 1264 nm (second oxidation). The MCD spectra of the redox-active species show a Faraday B-term signal with negative amplitude in this region and are very different from those in the monomeric PctBu(1-)FeIIIX2 complexes 5X (X = Cl- or CF3CO2-). The pyridine adduct of 1a ((PyPctBuFe)2O; 2Py) is paramagnetic (µB = 2.19, g = 2.11, and J = -6.1 cm-1) and has a major peak at 627 nm of its UV-vis spectrum, which is associated with a MCD pseudo A-term. Density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT (TDDFT) calculations, along with the exciton coupling theory, were used to explain the unusually red-shifted intense transitions in 1a as well as the H-aggregate-like spectra of the pyridine adduct 2Py.

RESUMO

Oxygen vacancies and their correlation with the electronic structure are crucial to understanding the functionality of TiO2 nanocrystals in material design applications. Here, we report spectroscopic investigations of the electronic structure of anatase TiO2 nanocrystals by employing hard and soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy measurements along with the corresponding model calculations. We show that the oxygen vacancies significantly transform the Ti local symmetry by modulating the covalency of titanium-oxygen bonds. Our results suggest that the altered Ti local symmetry is similar to the C3v, which implies that the Ti exists in two local symmetries (D2d and C3v) at the surface. The findings also indicate that the Ti distortion is a short-range order effect and presumably confined up to the second nearest neighbors. Such distortions modulate the electronic structure and provide a promising approach to structural design of the TiO2 nanocrystals.

RESUMO

Rational control of the coordination environment of atomically dispersed catalysts is pivotal to achieve desirable catalytic reactivity. We report the reversible control of coordination structure in atomically dispersed electrocatalysts via ligand exchange reactions to reversibly modulate their reactivity for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). The CO-ligated atomically dispersed Rh catalyst exhibited ca. 30-fold higher ORR activity than the NHx -ligated catalyst, whereas the latter showed three times higher H2 O2 selectivity than the former. Post-treatments of the catalysts with CO or NH3 allowed the reversible exchange of CO and NHx ligands, which reversibly tuned oxidation state of metal centers and their ORR activity and selectivity. DFT calculations revealed that more reduced oxidation state of CO-ligated Rh site could further stabilize the *OOH intermediate, facilitating the two- and four-electron pathway ORR. The reversible ligand exchange reactions were generalized to Ir- and Pt-based catalysts.

RESUMO

An unprecedented stable neutral radical nickel(II) complex of 3,5-bis(dimedonyl)azadiisoindomethene (1) was prepared by the direct reaction between 1,3-diiminoisoindoline and dimedone. A new radical complex 1 has an intense and narrow absorption at 1008 nm and can be reduced to a less stable anionic [1]- with a typical aza(dibenzo)boron dipyrromethene (aza-BODIPY) UV-vis spectrum. Complex 1, along with two other colored condensation reaction products 2 and 3, was characterized by spectroscopy and X-ray crystallography, while the paramagnetic nature of 1 was probed by EPR and SQUID methods. Complex 1 forms dimers in the solid state with short (∼3.16 Å) Ni---Ni contacts. Redox data on 1 are indicative of a reversible reduction process in this complex; its magnetism suggests a S = 1/2 state with the spin density delocalized over the aza-BODIPY core. The experimental data 1 and [1]- were correlated with the density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT calculations.

RESUMO

The precise design of single-atom nanozymes (SAzymes) and understanding of their biocatalytic mechanisms hold great promise for developing ideal bio-enzyme substitutes. While considerable efforts have been directed towards mimicking partial bio-inspired structures, the integration of heterogeneous SAzymes configurations and homogeneous enzyme-like mechanism remains an enormous challenge. Here, we show a spatial engineering strategy to fabricate dual-sites SAzymes with atomic Fe active center and adjacent Cu sites. Compared to planar Fe-Cu dual-atomic sites, vertically stacked Fe-Cu geometry in FePc@2D-Cu-N-C possesses highly optimized scaffolds, favorable substrate affinity, and fast electron transfer. These characteristics of FePc@2D-Cu-N-C SAzyme induces biomimetic O2 activation through homogenous enzymatic pathway, resembling functional and mechanistic similarity to natural cytochrome c oxidase. Furthermore, it presents an appealing alternative of cytochrome P450 3A4 for drug metabolism and drug-drug interaction. These findings are expected to deepen the fundamental understanding of atomic-level design in next-generation bio-inspired nanozymes.

RESUMO

Based on experimental and computational evidence, phthalocyanine (Pc) compounds in the form of quaternary-bound metal-nitrogen (N) atoms are the most effective catalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). However, the heat treatment process used in their synthesis may compromise the ideal structure, causing the agglomeration of transition metals. To overcome this issue, a novel method is developed for synthesizing iron (Fe) single-atom catalysts with ideal structures supported by thermally exfoliated graphene oxide (GO). This is achieved through a short heat treatment of only 2.5 min involving FePc and N, N-dimethylformamide in the presence of GO. According to the synthesis mechanism revealed by this study, carbon monoxide acts as a strong linker between the single Fe atoms and graphene. It facilitates the formation of a structure containing oxygen species between FeN4 and graphene, which provides high activity and stability for the ORR. These catalysts possess an enormous number of active sites and exhibit enhanced activity toward the alkaline ORR. They demonstrate excellent performance when applied to real electrochemical devices, such as zinc-air batteries and anion exchange membrane fuel cells. It is expected that the instantaneous heat treatment method developed in this study will aid in the development of high-performing single-atom catalysts.

RESUMO

Atomic Fe in N-doped C (Fe-N-C) catalysts provide the most promising non-precious metal O2 reduction activity at the cathodes of proton exchange membrane fuel cells. However, one of the biggest remaining challenges to address towards their implementation in fuel cells is their limited durability. Fe demetallation has been suggested as the primary initial degradation mechanism. However, the fate of Fe under different operating conditions varies. Here, we monitor operando Fe dissolution of a highly porous and >50% FeN x electrochemical utilization Fe-N-C catalyst in 0.1 M HClO4, under O2 and Ar at different temperatures, in both flow cell and gas diffusion electrode (GDE) half-cell coupled to inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). By combining these results with pre- and post-mortem analyses, we demonstrate that in the absence of oxygen, Fe cations diffuse away within the liquid phase. Conversely, at -15 mA cm-2 geo and more negative O2 reduction currents, the Fe cations reprecipitate as Fe-oxides. We support our conclusions with a microkinetic model, revealing that the local pH in the catalyst layer predominantly accounts for the observed trend. Even at a moderate O2 reduction current density of -15 mA cm-2 geo at 25 °C, a significant H+ consumption and therefore pH increase (pH = 8-9) within the bulk Fe-N-C layer facilitate precipitation of Fe cations. This work provides a unified view on the Fe dissolution degradation mechanism for a model Fe-N-C in both high-throughput flow cell and practical operating GDE conditions, underscoring the crucial role of local pH in regulating the stability of the active sites.

RESUMO

Single-atom nanozymes (SAzymes) are considered promising alternatives to natural enzymes. The catalytic performance of SAzymes featuring homogeneous, well-defined active structures can be enhanced through elucidating structure-activity relationship and tailoring physicochemical properties. However, manipulating enzymatic properties through structural variation is an underdeveloped approach. Herein, the synthesis of edge-rich Fe single-atom nanozymes (FeNC-edge) via an H2 O2 -mediated edge generation is reported. By controlling the number of edge sites, the peroxidase (POD)- and oxidase (OXD)-like performance is significantly enhanced. The activity enhancement results from the presence of abundant edges, which provide new anchoring sites to mononuclear Fe. Experimental results combined with density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that FeN4 moieties in the edge sites display high electron density of Fe atoms and open N atoms. Finally, it is demonstrated that FeNC-edge nanozyme effectively inhibits tumor growth both in vitro and in vivo, suggesting that edge-tailoring is an efficient strategy for developing artificial enzymes as novel catalytic therapeutics.

RESUMO

Multi-metal oxide (MMO) materials have significant potential to facilitate various demanding reactions by providing additional degrees of freedom in catalyst design. However, a fundamental understanding of the (electro)catalytic activity of MMOs is limited because of the intrinsic complexity of their multi-element nature. Additional complexities arise when MMO catalysts have crystalline structures with two different metal site occupancies, such as the spinel structure, which makes it more challenging to investigate the origin of the (electro)catalytic activity of MMOs. Here, uniform-sized multi-metal spinel oxide nanoparticles composed of Mn, Co, and Fe as model MMO electrocatalysts are synthesized and the contributions of each element to the structural flexibility of the spinel oxides are systematically studied, which boosts the electrocatalytic oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity. Detailed crystal and electronic structure characterizations combined with electrochemical and computational studies reveal that the incorporation of Co not only increases the preferential octahedral site occupancy, but also modifies the electronic state of the ORR-active Mn site to enhance the intrinsic ORR activity. As a result, nanoparticles of the optimized catalyst, Co0.25 Mn0.75 Fe2.0 -MMO, exhibit a half-wave potential of 0.904 V (versus RHE) and mass activity of 46.9 A goxide -1 (at 0.9 V versus RHE) with promising stability.

RESUMO

The strong bonding at the interface between the metal and the support, which can inhibit the undesirable aggregation of metal nanoparticles and carbon deposition from reforming of hydrocarbon, is well known as the classical strong metal-support interaction (SMSI). SMSI of nanocatalysts was significantly affected by heat treatment and reducing conditions during catalyst preparation.the heat treatment and reduction conditions during catalyst preparation. SMSI can be weakened by the decrement of metal-doped sites in the supporting oxide and can often deactivate catalysts by the encapsulation of active sites through these processes. To retain SMSI near the active sites and to enhance the catalytic activity of the nanocatalyst, it is essential to increase the number of surficial metal-doped sites between nanometal and the support. Herein, we propose a mild reduction process using dry methane (CH4/CO2) gas that suppresses the aggregation of nanoparticles and increases the exposed interface between the metal and support, Ni and cerium oxide. The effects of mild reduction on the chemical state of Ni-cerium oxide nanocatalysts were specifically investigated in this study. As a result, mild reduction led to form large amounts of the Ni3+ phase at the catalyst surface of which SMSI was significantly enhanced. It can be easily fabricated while the dry reforming of methane (DRM) reaction is on stream. The superior performance of the catalyst achieved a considerably high CH4 conversion rate of approximately 60% and stable operation up to 550 h at a low temperature, 600 °C.

RESUMO

A simple wet-chemical route for the preparation of core-shell-structured catalysts was developed to achieve high oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity with a low Pt loading amount. Nickel nitride (Ni3N) nanoparticles were used as earth-abundant metal-based cores to support thin Pt layers. To realize the site-selective formation of Pt layers on the Ni3N core, hydrogen molecules (H2) were used as a mild reducing agent. As H2 oxidation is catalyzed by the surface of Ni3N, the redox reaction between H2 and Pt(IV) in solution was facilitated on the Ni3N surface, which resulted in the selective deposition of Pt on Ni3N. The controlled Pt formation led to a subnanometer (0.5-1 nm)-thick Pt shell on the Ni3N core. By adopting the core-shell structure, higher ORR activity than the commercial Pt/C was achieved. Electrochemical measurements showed that the thin Pt layer on Ni3N nanoparticle exhibits 5 times higher mass activity and specific activity than that of commercial Pt/C. Furthermore, it is expected that the proposed simple wet-chemical method can be utilized to prepare various transition-metal-based core-shell nanocatalysts for a wide range of energy conversion reactions.

RESUMO

We have synthesized three different shapes of [Formula: see text] nanoparticles to investigate the relationships between the surface Co[Formula: see text] and Co[Formula: see text] bonding quantified by exploiting the known exposed surface planes, terminations, and coordiations of [Formula: see text] nanoparticle spheres, cubes and plates. Subsequently this information is related to the unusual behaviour observed in the magnetism. The competition of exchange interactions at the surface provides the mechanism for different behaviours in the shapes. The cubes display weakened antiferromagnetic interactions in the form of a spin-flop that occurs at the surface, while the plates show distinct ferromagnetic behaviour due to the strong competition between the interactions. We elucidate the spin properties which are highly sensitive to bonding and crystal field environments. This work provides a new window into the mechanisms behind surface magnetism.

RESUMO

The rational design of previously unidentified materials that could realize excellent electrochemical-controlled optical and charge storage properties simultaneously, are especially desirable and useful for fabricating smart multifunctional devices. Here, a facile synthesis of a 1D π-d conjugated coordination polymer (Ni-BTA) is reported, consisting of metal (Ni)-containing nodes and organic linkers (1,2,4,5-benzenetetramine), which could be easily grown on various substrates via a scalable chemical bath deposition method. The resulting Ni-BTA film exhibits superior performances for both electrochromic and energy storage functions, such as large optical modulation (61.3%), high coloration efficiency (223.6 cm2 C-1), and high gravimetric capacity (168.1 mAh g-1). In particular, the Ni-BTA film can maintain its electrochemical recharge-ability and electrochromic properties even after 10 000 electrochemical cycles demonstrating excellent durability. Moreover, a smart energy storage indicator is demonstrated in which the energy storage states can be visually recognized in real time. The excellent electrochromic and charge storage performances of Ni-BTA films present a great promise for Ni-BTA nanowires to be used as practical electrode materials in various applications such as electrochromic devices, energy storage cells, and multifunctional smart windows.

RESUMO

Our work introduces a novel technique based on the magnetic response of Ce3+ and molecular oxygen adsorbed on the surface of nanoceria and ceria-based catalysts that quantifies the number and type of defects and demonstrates that this information is the missing link that finally enables predictive design of NOx catalysis in ceria-based systems. The new insights into ceria catalysis are enabled by quantifying the above for different ceria nanoparticle shapes (i.e., surface terminations) and O2 partial pressure. We used ceria nanorods, cubes, and spheres and evaluated them for catalytic reduction of NO by CO. We then demonstrated the quantitative prediction of the reactivity of nanomaterials via their magnetism in different atmospheric environments. We find that the observed enhancement of reactivity for ceria nanocubes and nanorods is not directly due to improved reactivity on those surface terminations but rather due to the increased ease of generating lattice defects in these materials. Finally, we demonstrate that the method is equally applicable to highly topical and industrially relevant ceria mixed oxides, using nanoscale alumina-supported ceria as a representative case-a most ill-defined catalyst. Because the total oxide surface is a mixture of active ceria and inactive support and ceria is not likely present as crystallographically well-defined phases, reactivity does not easily scale with surface area or a surface termination. The key parameter to design efficient NO reduction in ceria-based catalysts is knowing and controlling the surface localized excess Ce3+ ion areal density.
