RESUMO

PURPOSE: To investigate the efficacy of atrioventricular valve regurgitation (AVVR) for predicting atrioventricular septal defect (AVSD) in the first trimester. METHODS: We performed a prospective observational study, screening for complicated congenital heart diseases and AVVR in fetuses at 11 to 13+6 weeks of gestation by advanced dynamic flow in four-chamber view and three-vessel-trachea view. RESULTS: 43 549 fetuses at 11 to 13+6 weeks of gestation were screened by echocardiography, of which 37 cases were diagnosed with AVSD, including complete AVSD (31 cases), intermediate AVSD (3 cases) and partial AVSD (1 cases), undiagnosed intermediate AVSD (2 cases), and misdiagnosed case (2 cases). AVVR was observed in 34 cases (34/37) in the first trimester, 59. 46% (22/37) nuchal translucency greater than 95th percentile, 29. 73% (11/37) absence of nasal bone, 32. 43% (12/37) ductus venosus A wave inversion, and 40. 54% (15/37) had tricuspid regurgitation. The sensitivity of common AVVR in predicting AVSD is better than other ultrasonic indexes. CONCLUSIONS: AVVR can be used as an ultrasonic indicator to predict AVSD in the first trimester, which is beneficial to detect AVSD.

Urban spontaneous plants, that are not intentionally propagated by humans and do not belong to the remnants of the natural habitats, not only occur in green spaces but are also distributed in diverse microhabitats in impervious surface areas. Impervious surface coverage is commonly used in studies on spontaneous plant diversity patterns in human-dominated landscapes; however, the role of habitat diversity (i.e., land-use diversity) has been overlooked. Here, we surveyed spontaneous plant composition and land uses (12 types) in 321 0.25 ha sampling sites on the Chongming District islands, Shanghai, to determine the role of land-use diversity in explaining species richness. We examined the linear relationships between species richness and land-use diversity, and quantified the importance of impervious surface coverage and land-use diversity using the random forest (RF) method. All these analyses were conducted for spatial scales from 0.25 to 5 ha in 0.25 ha increments. We found an overall positive relationship between species richness and land-use diversity, and the RF model predicted approximately 50% of the species richness variation at the smallest spatial scale. However, the positive relationship weakened with spatial scale increase, and a rapid decline in explanatory power occurred for all predictor variables in the RF model. Besides impervious surface coverage, both the vegetated and non-vegetated land-use diversity contributed substantially to the prediction of species richness at finer spatial scales. The findings clarify how land-use diversity, both in green spaces and impervious surface areas, affect urban spontaneous plant richness and should be considered in urban biodiversity conservation strategies at the neighborhood scale.

RESUMO

Vascular ring and sling are congenital anomalies of the vascular structure in the thorax with a prevalence of 2.4/10,000 live births. Double aortic arch (DAA), right aortic arch with left ductus arteriosus and aberrant left subclavian artery (RAA-ALSA), and pulmonary artery sling (PAS) are the three common types of vascular ring and sling. These anomalies can be isolated or accompanied by intracardiac malformation. The presence of both vascular ring and PAS is extremely rare. Here, we report a fetus who was prenatally diagnosed with PAS and RAA-ALS, and developed symptoms due to esophageal and airway compression after birth.

Why some species are widespread across continents while others are confined geographically remains an open question in ecology and biogeography. Previous research has attempted to explain interspecific variation in geographic range size based on differences in dispersal ability. However, the relationship between dispersal ability and geographic range size remains uncertain, particularly in mammals. The goal of this study is to test whether geographic range size can be predicted by dispersal capacity among vespertilionid bats within a phylogenetic comparative framework. We integrated a large dataset on range area, longitudinal extent, wing morphology (a proxy for dispersal ability), migratory habit, and biogeographic realm across 126 vespertilionid bat species. We used phylogenetic regressions to disentangle the associations between these predictor factors and species range size while controlling for the effects of migration and biogeographic realm. Our analyses revealed that bat species with higher wing loading exhibit larger distribution ranges than those with lower wing loading, and that the size of geographic ranges was associated with wing aspect ratio in bats. These results highlight the relationship between wing morphology and range size in flying mammals, and suggest a role of dispersal capacity in shaping species' geographic distributions.
