BACKGROUND: Excessive collapse of the soft palate and lateral pharyngeal wall narrowing are established causes of loud snoring and sleep apnea in subjects with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Therefore, delicate surgical techniques are needed to reshape the soft palate and create sufficient tension in the lateral pharyngeal wall. This study aimed to determine the therapeutic outcome and favorable indications of soft-palate webbing flap pharyngoplasty in subjects with OSA and primary snoring. METHODS: A total of 174 subjects who underwent soft-palate webbing flap pharyngoplasty combined with uvulopalatal flap and septoturbinoplasty from August 2015 to February 2020 were included in this study. Medical records, including pre- and postoperative sleep parameters, were retrospectively reviewed. The primary outcome measure was the degree of improvement in AHI after surgery. Other outcomes were differences in surgical response rates, subjective visual analog score (VAS) for snoring, sleep quality, and complications. RESULTS: Polysomnographic results showed that apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) scores were significantly reduced from 39.6 ± 6.1 to 22.9 ± 3.6 following soft-palate webbing flap pharyngoplasty in 59 subjects, and overall success and response rates of this technique were analyzed with 71%. We found that the successful outcomes were observed in 50% of mild (n = 12) and 56% of moderate (n = 16) subjects with OSA subjects due to lateral pharyngeal wall collapse. The success rate of soft-palate webbing flap pharyngoplasty was relatively higher in subjects with mild and moderate OSA than those with severe OSA. Additionally, the mean VAS snoring scale was 4.7 and subjects' primary snoring intensity significantly improved to 2.9 after soft-palate webbing flap pharyngoplasty. Subjective symptoms such as daytime sleepiness and sleep quality also showed improvement. Most complications were found to be minimal and improved by 1 month after the operation. CONCLUSION: Our data demonstrate that soft-palate webbing flap pharyngoplasty is an effective treatment for OSA and primary snoring and may be a promising technique to reduce lateral pharyngeal wall collapse.

We report here a robust, tunable, and reversible transcription control system for endogenous genes. The REMOTE-control system (Reversible Manipulation of Transcription at Endogenous loci) employs enhanced lac repression and tet activation systems. With this approach, we show in mouse embryonic stem cells that endogenous Dnmt1 gene transcription could be up- or downregulated in a tunable, inducible, and reversible manner across nearly two orders of magnitude. Transcriptional repression of Dnmt1 by REMOTE-control was potent enough to cause embryonic lethality in mice, reminiscent of a genetic knockout of Dnmt1 and could substantially suppress intestinal polyp formation when applied to an ApcMin model. Binding by the enhanced lac repressor was sufficiently tight to allow strong attenuation of transcriptional elongation, even at operators located many kilobases downstream of the transcription start site and to produce invariably tight repression of all of the strong viral/mammalian promoters tested. Our approach of targeting tet transcriptional activators to the endogenous Dnmt1 promoter resulted in robust upregulation of this highly expressed housekeeping gene. Our system provides exquisite control of the level, timing, and cell-type specificity of endogenous gene expression, and the potency and versatility of the system will enable high resolution in vivo functional analyses.

In this work, a method was developed for the simultaneous determination of residual metoserpate, buquinolate and diclofenac in pork, milk, and eggs. Samples were extracted with 0.1% formic acid in acetonitrile, defatted with n-hexane, and filtered prior to analysis using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. The analytes were separated on a C18 column using 0.1% acetic acid and methanol as the mobile phase. The matrix-matched calibration curves showed good linearity over a concentration range of 5-50 ng/g with coefficients of determination (R2 ) ≥0.991. The intra- and inter-day accuracies (expressed as recovery percentage values) calculated using three spiking levels (5, 10, and 20 µg/kg) were 80-108.65 and 74.06-107.15%, respectively, and the precisions (expressed as relative standard deviation) were 2.86-13.67 and 0.05-11.74%, respectively, for the tested drugs determined in various matrices. The limits of quantification (1 and 2 µg/kg) were below the uniform residual level (0.01 mg/kg) set for compounds that have no specific maximum residue limit (MRL). The developed method was tested using market samples and none of the target analytes was detected in any of the samples. The validated method proved to be practicable for detection of the tested analytes in pork, milk, and eggs.

We have developed an analytical method for the determination of lincomycin, tylosin A and tylosin B residues in royal jelly using liquid chromatography-triple quadrupole tandem mass spectrometry analysis. For extraction and purification, we employed 1% trifluoroacetic acid and 0.1 m Na2 EDTA solutions along with an Oasis HLB cartridge. The target antibiotics were well separated in a Kinetex EVO C18 reversed-phase analytical column using a combination of 0.1% formate acid in ultrapure water (A) and acetonitrile (B) as the mobile phase. Good linearity was achieved over the tested concentration range (5-50 µg/kg) in matrix-matched standard calibration. The coefficients of determination (R2 ) were 0.9933, 0.9933 and 0.996, for tylosin A, tylosin B and lincomycin, respectively. Fortified royal jelly spiked with three different concentrations of the tested antibiotics (5, 10 and 20 µg/kg) yielded recoveries in the range 80.94-109.26% with relative standard deviations ≤4%. The proposed method was applied to monitor 11 brand of royal jelly collected from domestic markets and an imported brand from New Zealand; all the samples tested negative for lincomycin, tylosin A and tylosin B residues. In conclusion, 1% trifluoroacetic acid and 0.1 m Na2 EDTA aqueous solvents combined with solid-phase extraction could effectively complete the sample preparation process for royal jelly before analysis. The developed approach can be applied for a routine analysis of lincomycin, tylosin A and tylosin B residues in royal jelly.

Redd1, also known as RTP801/Dig2/DDIT4, is a stress-induced protein and marked changes of Redd1 expression occurs in response to hypoxia or cerebral ischemia. In the present study, we examined the time-course changes in Redd1 protein expressions in the rat hippocampal CA1 region following chronic cerebral hypoperfusion (CCH) induced by permanent bilateral common carotid arteries occlusion (2VO). Redd1 immunoreactivity in the pyramidal neurons of the hippocampal CA1 region was increased at 7 days after 2VO surgery, and then the immunoreactivity was decreased with time. Especially, very weak Redd1 immunoreactivity was observed in the hippocampal CA1 region at 28 days after 2VO surgery. Western blot analysis showed that Redd1 level in the hippocampal CA1 region was significantly increased at 7 days following CCH and significantly decreased at 28 days after 2VO surgery, compared with that of the sham-operated group. These results indicate that Redd1 expressions is markedly changed in the hippocampal CA1 region following CCH and that change of Redd1 expression may be associated with the CCH-induced neuronal damage in the hippocampal CA1 region.

In this study, an analytical method was developed for quantification of residues of the anthelmintic drug phenothiazine (PTZ) in pork muscle using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. Muscles were extracted using 0.2% formic acid and 10 mm ammonium formate in acetonitrile, defatted and purified using n-hexane. The drug was well separated on a Waters XBridge™ C18 analytical column using a binary solvent system consisting of 0.2% formic acid and 10 mm ammonium formate in ultrapure water (A) and acetonitrile (B). Good linearity was achieved over a six-point concentration range in matrix-matched calibration with determination coefficient =0.9846. Fortified pork muscle having concentrations equivalent to and double the limit of quantification (1 ng/g) yielded recovery ranges between 100.82 and 104.03% and relative standard deviations <12%. Samples (n = 5) collected from large markets located in Seoul City tested negative for PTZ residue. In conclusion, 0.2% formic acid and ammonium formate in acetonitrile can effectively extract PTZ from pork muscle without solid-phase extraction, a step normally required for cleanup before analysis and the validated method can be used for routine analysis to ensure the quality of animal products.

An analytical method was developed for the detection of toldimfos sodium residues in porcine muscle and bovine milk using liquid chromatography-triple quadrupole tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) analysis. The drug was extracted from muscle and milk using 10 mm ammonium formate in acetonitrile and then purified using n-hexane. The drug was well separated on a Luna C18 column using a mixture of 10 mm ammonium formate in ultrapure water (A) and acetonitrile (B) as the mobile phase. Good linearity was achieved over the tested concentration range (0.005-0.03 mg/kg) in matrix-matched standard calibration. The determination coefficients (R2 ) were 0.9942 and 0.9898 for muscle and milk, respectively. Fortified porcine muscle and bovine milk contained concentrations equivalent to and twice the limit of quantification (0.005 mg/kg) yielded recoveries in the range of 75.58-89.74% and relative standard deviations of ≤8.87%. Samples collected from large markets located in Seoul, Republic of Korea, tested negative for toldimfos sodium residue. In conclusion, ammonium formate in acetonitrile can effectively extract toldimfos sodium from porcine muscle and bovine milk without solid-phase extraction, which is usually required for cleanup before analysis. This method can be applied for the routine analysis of toldimfos in foods of animal origins.

BACKGROUND: Dalbergia odorifera T. Chen (Leguminosae) is an indigenous medicinal herb that is widely used as a popular remedy in northern and eastern Asia. However, the cellular mechanisms underlying the biological activity of D. odorifera are not fully elucidated. METHODS: Anti-inflammatory effect of D. odorifera extract (DOE) was determined through intraperitoneal injection in a mouse model of endotoxemia induced by lipopolysaccharide (LPS). RAW 264.7 cells, a murine macrophage, were also treated with LPS to generate a cellular model of inflammation, and investigated the anti-inflammatory activity and underlying mechanisms of DOE and its constituent isoliquiritigenin. RESULTS: DOE dose-dependently inhibited LPS-induced release of high mobility group box 1 (HMGB1), a late proinflammatory cytokine, and decreased cytosolic translocation of HMGB1 in RAW264.7 cells. This inhibitory effect of DOE on HMGB1 release was observed in cells treated with DOE before or after LPS treatment, suggesting that DOE is effective for both treatment and prevention. In addition, DOE significantly inhibited LPS-induced formation of nitric oxide (NO) and expression of inducible NO synthase (iNOS) in a dose-dependent manner. These effects of DOE were accompanied by suppression of HMGB1 release triggered by LPS, suggesting a possible mechanism by which DOE modulates HMGB1 release through NO signaling. Isoriquiritigenin, a constituent of DOE, also attenuated LPS-triggered NO formation and HMGB1 release in RAW264.7 cells, indicating that isoriquiritigenin is an indexing molecule for the anti-inflammatory properties of DOE. Furthermore, c-Jun N-terminal kinase, but not extracellular signal-regulated kinase and p38, mediated DOE-dependent inhibition of HMGB1 release and NO/iNOS induction in RAW 264.7 cells exposed to LPS. Notably, administration of DOE ameliorated survival rates in a mouse model of endotoxemia induced by LPS, where decreased level of circulating HMGB1 was observed. CONCLUSION: These results suggest that DOE confers resistance to LPS-triggered inflammation through NO-mediated inhibitory effects on HMGB1 release.

A quick, easy, cheap, effective, rugged, and safe QuEChERS (method) was used for the simultaneous detection of four veterinary drug residues, namely naloxone, yohimbine, thiophanate, and altrenogest, in porcine muscle, using liquid chromatography with electrospray ionization triple quadrupole tandem mass spectrometry. Because of the unavailability of a suitable internal standard, matrix-matched calibrations were used for quantification, with determination coefficients ≥ 0.9542. The accuracy (expressed as recovery %) ranged from 60.53 to 83.25%, and the intra- and interday precisions (expressed as relative standard deviations) were <12%. The limits of quantification were 5, 0.5, 2, and 5 ng/g for naloxone, yohimbine, thiophanate, and altrenogest, respectively. Samples purchased from local markets in Seoul, Republic of Korea, revealed no traces of the target analytes. The developed method described herein is sensitive and reliable and can be applied to quantify the tested veterinary drugs in animal tissues.

A liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry (LC/ESI-MS/MS) method was developed for monitoring and detection of four different drugs, namely acetanilide, pentylenetetrazole, phenacetin, and tetramethrin in porcine muscle, pasteurized milk, and table egg samples. For acetanilide and pentylenetetrazole, the samples were extracted with 0.1 % formic acid in acetonitrile, followed by defatting with n-hexane, partitioning at -20 °C for 1 h, centrifugation, and filtration, whereas the quick, easy, cheap, effective, rugged, and safe "QuEChERS" method was used for phenacetin and tetramethrin. The final extracts were combined and analyzed in a single chromatographic run using an XBridge(TM) analytical column and 0.1 % formic acid and 10 mM ammonium formate in ultrapure water (A) and 0.1 % formic acid and 10 mM ammonium formate in methanol (B) as the mobile phase. Owing to the unavailability of internal standards, matrix-matched calibrations were used for analyte quantification with coefficients of determination (R (2)) ≥ 0.9865. The intra- and inter-day accuracies ranged from 60.75 to 90.90 % and from 63.75 to 89.30 %, respectively, while the respective analytical precisions were 1.48-17.44 % (23.3 % for porcine sample spiked with phenacetin) and 1.97-15.78 %. The limits of quantification (LOQ) were between 0.5 and 2.5 ng/g in the matrices tested. Food samples purchased from local markets in Seoul were analyzed using the developed method and none of the tested drugs was detected.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: To identify factors associated with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) in healthy Asian subjects. METHODS: A propensity score-matched case-control study was designed. To investigate the effects of demographic and clinical factors on the presence of NAFLD, a baseline-category logit model was used. Potential living liver donors with no hepatic steatosis (< 5%: n = 1353, group 1) were considered the baseline category, and subjects with mild (5-33%: n = 724, group 2) and moderate/severe (> 33%: n = 116, group 3) hepatic steatosis were defined as cases. Age and gender were matched between cases and controls, which resulted in 83 matched subjects in each of the three groups. The area of abdominal (visceral and subcutaneous) fat was directly measured in all subjects by unenhanced computed tomography. RESULTS: Serum aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase (ALT), gamma-glutamyltranspeptidase, total cholesterol and triglyceride levels, and visceral fat amount were directly correlated with the grade of hepatic steatosis, and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels were inversely correlated with it (all P values < 0.05). In a multivariate model, visceral fat amount was significantly correlated with both mild (group 2) and moderate to severe (group 3) NAFLD, with respective odds ratios (ORs) of 1.03 relative to group 1 (Ps < 0.05). Body mass index (BMI), ALT, and subcutaneous fat were significant predictors of only moderate to severe NAFLD (ORs of 0.54, 1.20, and 1.02, respectively, for group 3 vs group 1; Ps < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Our results indicate that visceral adiposity makes non-obese subjects more susceptible to NAFLD, compared with subcutaneous fat and BMI.

The concentrations of residual aminopyrine and antipyrine in porcine muscle, milk, and egg samples were analyzed using liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry after undergoing a series of sample pretreatment steps. Owing to an ion suppression effect, matrix-matched calibrations were used for analyte quantitation with determination coefficients (R(2) ) ≥ 0.9931. The recovery rates for aminopyrine and antipyrine in various matrices at two spiking levels (5 and 10 ng/g) fell in the range of 60.96-68.87 and 61.87-66.99%, respectively. Meanwhile, the intra- and inter-day precisions (expressed as relative standard deviation) were 1.02-12.95 and 1.71-5.50%, respectively. The method's detection limit (1 ng/g) was very low, thus enabling the detection of low residue levels. The applicability of the developed method was demonstrated with actual market samples and none of the tested analytes was detected in any of the samples.

A multiclass, multiresidue determination method is reported for the detection of ten veterinary drugs, including scopolamine, metoclopramide, acriflavine, berberine, tripelennamine, diphenhydramine, acrinol, triamcinolone, loperamide, and roxithromycin in pork, milk, and eggs. The method involves a simple extraction using 0.1% formic acid in acetonitrile, followed by defatting with n-hexane, centrifugation, and filtration prior to liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometric analysis. As ion suppression and enhancement effects are reported, matrix-matched calibrations are used for quantification, with determination coefficients ≥0.9765. For the majority of the tested analytes, the intra- and interday accuracy (expressed as recovery %) range from 70.6 to 94.6% and from 70.1 to 93.3%, respectively, and the precision (expressed as relative standard deviation) ranges from 0.5 to 19.8% and from 2.8 to 18.4% in all matrices. The limits of quantification range between 0.5 and 10 ng/g. The validated tandem mass spectrometry method is successfully applied to market samples; the target analytes are not detected in any of the tested samples. In terms of accuracy, no extract cleanup is deemed necessary. The developed method is feasible for the simultaneous detection of the tested analytes in pork, milk, and eggs.

With the overarching aim to develop a simple and reliable method for the quantitative analysis of polypeptide antibiotics in various livestock products, the content of bacitracin, and polymyxin B in pork, beef, chicken, milk, and eggs was analyzed using colistin sulfate as an internal standard. The extracted samples were eluted via solid-phase extraction using 2% formic acid in acetonitrile/methanol (1:1, v/v). The two polypeptides were identified and quantified based on the intensities of mass fragments from the respective triply charged precursor ions (bacitracin: 474.97 amu and polymyxin B: 402 amu) at the defined retention time windows using liquid chromatography with electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry in time-scheduled multiple reaction monitoring mode. The calibration curves showed good linearity over the concentration range 50-2500 ng/mL with determination coefficients ≥ 0.991. The mean recoveries were in the range 80.3-88.8% with relative standard deviations <13% for all samples. The limits of quantitation ranged from 30-250 ng/g. The developed method was applied to market samples, but the target analytes were not detected in any of the samples. The developed method is reliable for the simultaneous detection of bacitracin and polymyxin B in pork, beef, chicken, milk, and eggs.

OBJECTIVES: Chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) endotypes have demonstrated clinical value in guiding treatment decisions. Bacterial lysates are immunomodulators that have shown beneficial effects in various respiratory inflammatory diseases. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of postoperative bacterial lysate therapy on different CRS endotypes. METHODS: Patients diagnosed with CRS who underwent endoscopic sinus surgery were recruited. Bacterial lysates were administered postoperatively for 10 days per month for 3 months to the experimental group comprising patients with a history of frequent upper respiratory infections without adverse reactions. The remaining participants were allocated to the control group. The results of the postoperative 3-, 6-, and 12-month assessments, including the modified Lund-Kennedy (mLK) endoscopic and Sinonasal Outcome Test (SNOT) 22 scores, for the groups were compared. The tissue samples obtained from the participants were evaluated to detect the presence of relevant inflammatory mediators. RESULTS: Among the 92 participants, 47 started bacterial lysate therapy 2 weeks after the surgery. The tissue cytokine profiles and clinical parameters, such as the disease severity and blood eosinophil percentage, of the bacterial lysate and control groups were comparable before treatment. The mLK endoscopic and SNOT-22 scores did not differ after 3, 6, and 12 months of follow-up. The subgroup analysis revealed that the bacterial lysate group had significantly lower mLK endoscopic scores than the control group for CRS without nasal polyps, while there was a tendency toward significance for the interleukin (IL)-5 negative group after 6 months. CONCLUSION: Postoperative bacterial lysate therapy has some beneficial effects on the endoscopic findings of patients with CRS without nasal polyps or those who are negative for IL-5.

BACKGROUND: Fractional exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO) is useful in the management of asthma and predicting the efficacy of standard corticosteroids and biologics. However, the diagnostic value of FeNO in asthmatic chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP) remains unclear. OBJECTIVE: We assessed FeNO levels in patients with CRSwNP and evaluated the diagnostic value of FeNO for screening type 2 CRSwNP (T2-CRSwNP) with asthma. METHODS: We enrolled 94 patients who were diagnosed with CRSwNP and underwent functional endoscopic sinus surgery. FeNO levels, the blood eosinophil percentage, total IgE, spirometry tests (FEV1/FVC), Lund-Mackay CT score, and percentage of patients with comorbid asthma were compared among CRSwNP subgroups. Spearman rank correlation test was used to assess the degree of association between variables. ROC curve analysis was conducted to evaluate the diagnostic capability to differentiate T2-CRSwNP based on clinical and histological classifications. RESULTS: FeNO levels and the blood eosinophil percentage were significantly higher in patients with T2-CRSwNP(h) based on histological data (P < .05). FeNO was correlated with the blood eosinophil percentage (r = 0.420, P < .001) and FEV1/FVC (r = -0.324, P = .001). A FeNO level of 27 ppb had a good ability to discriminate patients with asthmatic T2-CRSwNP(h) (AUC = 0.848; 95% CI = 0.7602-0.9361; sensitivity = 90.9%; specificity = 63.9%). The optimal cutoff values for FeNO and the blood eosinophil percentage for diagnosing asthmatic T2-CRSwNP(h) were 68 ppb and 5.6% (sensitivity = 95.5%; specificity = 86.1%; AUC = 0.931; 95% CI = 0.8832-0.9791). In the diagnosis of severe T2-CRSwNP(c) based on clinical data, a FeNO level of 36 ppb showed the highest AUC (0.816; 95% CI = 0.7173-0.914; sensitivity = 72.7%; specificity = 79.2%). CONCLUSION: FeNO is a useful marker for screening asthmatic T2-CRSwNP even prior to biopsy or asthma evaluation and may assist in selecting a proper treatment.

PURPOSE: This study investigated the clinical implications of neutrophil extracellular trap (NET) formation (NETosis) and eosinophil extracellular trap (EET) formation (EETosis) regarding refractoriness in chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) with nasal polyps (CRSwNP). METHODS: Nasal polyp specimens were obtained from 117 patients with CRSwNP who received endoscopic sinus surgery. Disease control status at postoperative 1 year was assessed. Refractory cases were defined as partly controlled or uncontrolled cases according to the EPOS 2020 guidelines. NETosis and EETosis were evaluated through immunofluorescence staining (citrullinated histone H3-human neutrophil elastase and citrullinated histone-galectin-10, respectively) followed by manual counting. The z-score of NET and EET counts was used to define the following four groups: low extracellular trap formation (ETosis), NETosis-predominant, EETosis-predominant, and high-ETosis. RESULTS: The refractory and non-refractory groups showed significant differences in the tissue eosinophil count (P = 0.005) and EET count (P = 0.029). The tissue neutrophil count and the NET/neutrophil ratio were significantly different between the refractory and non-refractory groups of patients with neutrophilic CRS (P = 0.045, 0.031, respectively). Refractoriness significantly differed among the low-ETosis (30.77%), NETosis-predominant (47.83%), EETosis-predominant (56.67%), and high-ETosis (83.33%) groups (P = 0.005). CONCLUSIONS: The results of this study suggest that tissue Eosinophilia and EETosis may play a prognostic role, primarily in CRSwNP and thattissue neutrophilia and NETosis can play as prognostic biomarkers in neutrophilic CRSwNP.

To describe the fundamental aspects of air quality in tunnel environments, field campaigns were conducted to measure polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and some criteria pollutants from two tunnel sites of Nam San (NS) and Hong Ji (HJ) gates in Seoul, Korea. The total PAH values (ngm(-3)) for the NS tunnel (137.8 +/- 10.9) were notably higher than the HJ counterpart (91.3 +/- 7.82), while the total VOC exhibited a reversed pattern with a notable enhancement in the HJ tunnel (178.5 +/- 174.7 ppbC) relative to the NS tunnel (112.5 +/- 64.1 ppbC). A line of evidence, including the molecular diagnostic ratios of PAHs, indicates the relative dominance of diesel vehicles in the NS tunnel compared to the HJ site. The PAHs with high ring numbers (n > 6, such as benzo(g, h, i)perylene and indeno(1,2,3-cd)pyrene) were preferentially enriched in the particle phase, whereas their low ring number counterparts (n = 2-3) were in the gas phase. The results of our study suggest the possibility that the relative source processes for each tunnel site are characterized by the relative dominance of either diesel (NS) or gasoline-powered vehicles (HJ).

Since December 2019, COVID-19 has greatly influenced public healthcare systems around the globe in various aspects, including limitation of healthcare accessibility due to lack of both human and financial resources, suspension of clinics, and fear of infection causing healthcare avoidance. The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of COVID-19 on access to healthcare for otorhinolaryngology patients from different socioeconomic status (SES) groups. Otorhinolaryngology patients' disease severity status, diagnosed at the first hospital visit, was investigated during the pre -and post-COVID-19 pandemic era in a single medical center located in Seoul, Korea. An ordinal regression model was used to assess the impact of both SES and the COVID-19 pandemic on otorhinolaryngology diseases. Within the chronic rhinosinusitis group, lower SES was associated with a higher disease severity at the first visit compared to higher SES (OR = 3.25). During the COVID-19 pandemic, while the total number of outpatients was reduced, the severity of these ENT diseases seemed to increase compared to the pre-pandemic severity in every SES group. Our study demonstrates the negative impact a worldwide pandemic can have on healthcare inequity and disease severity, and highlights the importance of re-allocating fundamental resources for those in need during periods of public health crisis.

BACKGROUND: Skin prick tests are widely used to diagnose allergic sensitization. The influence of obesity on the skin prick test result has not been clearly established, even though the association between allergic disease and obesity is relatively well known. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether a change in body mass index (BMI) contributes to skin reactivity to histamine and allergens in a skin prick test, we performed a 2-year follow-up study on Korean children. METHODS: Skin prick tests for common aeroallergens were performed on elementary school students from Jeju Island, Korea. BMI was calculated using weight and height after measuring both, and demographic characteristics were surveyed. The same tests were repeated after 2 years. RESULTS: The sensitization rate increased during the 2 years between tests and the children's mean BMI also increased, along with their age. The wheal sizes induced by Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus, Dermatophagoides farinae, Japanese cedar, and histamine were significantly increased during 2 years; however, only the histamine reaction associated with increased BMI had statistical significance. Furthermore, other variables-including the number of sensitized allergens-were not related to histamine skin reactivity. CONCLUSION: Histamine skin reactivity increased in children over time and some allergens showed increased specific reactions; however, BMI gain is a specific predictor of histamine reactivity. Further studies are needed to elucidate the clinical significance of these changes.
