BACKGROUND: Semiparametric survival analysis such as the Cox proportional hazards (CPH) regression model is commonly employed in endometrial cancer (EC) study. Although this method does not need to know the baseline hazard function, it cannot estimate event time ratio (ETR) which measures relative increase or decrease in survival time. To estimate ETR, the Weibull parametric model needs to be applied. The objective of this study is to develop and evaluate the Weibull parametric model for EC patients' survival analysis. METHODS: Training (n = 411) and testing (n = 80) datasets from EC patients were retrospectively collected to investigate this problem. To determine the optimal CPH model from the training dataset, a bi-level model selection with minimax concave penalty was applied to select clinical and radiomic features which were obtained from T2-weighted MRI images. After the CPH model was built, model diagnostic was carried out to evaluate the proportional hazard assumption with Schoenfeld test. Survival data were fitted into a Weibull model and hazard ratio (HR) and ETR were calculated from the model. Brier score and time-dependent area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) were compared between CPH and Weibull models. Goodness of the fit was measured with Kolmogorov-Smirnov (KS) statistic. RESULTS: Although the proportional hazard assumption holds for fitting EC survival data, the linearity of the model assumption is suspicious as there are trends in the age and cancer grade predictors. The result also showed that there was a significant relation between the EC survival data and the Weibull distribution. Finally, it showed that Weibull model has a larger AUC value than CPH model in general, and it also has smaller Brier score value for EC survival prediction using both training and testing datasets, suggesting that it is more accurate to use the Weibull model for EC survival analysis. CONCLUSIONS: The Weibull parametric model for EC survival analysis allows simultaneous characterization of the treatment effect in terms of the hazard ratio and the event time ratio (ETR), which is likely to be better understood. This method can be extended to study progression free survival and disease specific survival. INTRODUCTION: As tumour response rates are increasingly demonstrated in early-phase cancer trials (EPCT), optimal patient selection and accurate prognostication are paramount. Hammersmith Score (HS), a simple prognostic index derived on routine biochemical measures (albumin <35 g/L, lactate dehydrogenase >450 IU/L, sodium <135 mmol/L), is a validated predictor of response and survival in EPCT participants. HS has not been validated in the cancer immunotherapy era. METHODS: We retrospectively analysed characteristics and outcomes of unselected referrals to our early-phase unit (12/2019-12/2022). Independent predictors for overall survival (OS) were identified from univariable and multivariable models. HS was calculated for 66 eligible trial participants and compared with the Royal Marsden Score (RMS) to predict OS. Multivariable logistic regression and C-index was used to compare predictive ability of prognostic models. RESULTS: Of 212 referrals, 147 patients were screened and 82 patients treated in EPCT. Prognostic stratification by HS identifies significant difference in median OS, and HS was confirmed as a multivariable predictor for OS (HR: HS 1 vs. 0 2.51, 95% CI: 1.01-6.24, p = 0.049; HS 2/3 vs. 0: 10.32, 95% CI: 2.15-49.62, p = 0.004; C-index 0.771) with superior multivariable predictive ability than RMS (HR: RMS 2 vs. 0/1 5.46, 95% CI: 1.12-26.57, p = 0.036; RMS 3 vs. 0/1 6.83, 95% CI: 1.15-40.53, p < 0.001; C-index 0.743). CONCLUSIONS: HS is a validated prognostic index for patients with advanced cancer treated in the context of modern EPCTs, independent of tumour burden. HS is a simple, inexpensive prognostic tool to optimise referral for EPCT.

BACKGROUND: Determination of survival time in women with endometrial cancer using clinical features remains imprecise. Features from MRI may improve the survival estimation allowing improved treatment planning. PURPOSE: To identify clinical features and imaging signatures on T2-weighted MRI that can be used in an integrated model to estimate survival time for endometrial cancer subjects. STUDY TYPE: Retrospective. POPULATION: Four hundred thirteen patients with endometrial cancer as training (N = 330, 66.41 ± 11.42 years) and validation (N = 83, 67.60 ± 11.89 years) data and an independent set of 82 subjects as testing data (63.26 ± 12.38 years). FIELD STRENGTH/SEQUENCE: 1.5-T and 3-T scanners with sagittal T2-weighted spin echo sequence. ASSESSMENT: Tumor regions were manually segmented on T2-weighted images. Features were extracted from segmented masks, and clinical variables including age, cancer histologic grade and risk score were included in a Cox proportional hazards (CPH) model. A group least absolute shrinkage and selection operator method was implemented to determine the model from the training and validation datasets. STATISTICAL TESTS: A likelihood-ratio test and decision curve analysis were applied to compare the models. Concordance index (CI) and area under the receiver operating characteristic curves (AUCs) were calculated to assess the model. RESULTS: Three radiomic features (two image intensity and volume features) and two clinical variables (age and cancer grade) were selected as predictors in the integrated model. The CI was 0.797 for the clinical model (includes clinical variables only) and 0.818 for the integrated model using training and validation datasets, the associated mean AUC value was 0.805 and 0.853. Using the testing dataset, the CI was 0.792 and 0.882, significantly different and the mean AUC was 0.624 and 0.727 for the clinical model and integrated model, respectively. DATA CONCLUSION: The proposed CPH model with radiomic signatures may serve as a tool to improve estimated survival time in women with endometrial cancer. EVIDENCE LEVEL: 4 TECHNICAL EFFICACY: Stage 2.

PURPOSE: Cervical cancer metabolic tumour volume (MTV) derived from [18F]-FDG PET/CT has a role in prognostication and therapy planning. There is no standard method of outlining MTV on [18F]-FDG PET/CT. The aim of this study was to assess the optimal method to outline primary cervical tumours on [18F]-FDG PET/CT using MRI-derived tumour volumes as the reference standard. METHODS: 81 consecutive cervical cancer patients with pre-treatment staging MRI and [18F]-FDG PET/CT imaging were included. MRI volumes were compared with different PET segmentation methods. Method 1 measured MTVs at different SUVmax thresholds ranging from 20 to 60% (MTV20-MTV60) with bladder masking and manual adjustment when required. Method 2 created an isocontour around the tumour prior to different SUVmax thresholds being applied. Method 3 used an automated gradient method. Inter-observer agreement of MTV, following manual adjustment when required, was recorded. RESULTS: For method 1, the MTV25 and MTV30 were closest to the MRI volumes for both readers (mean percentage change from MRI volume of 2.9% and 13.4% for MTV25 and - 13.1% and - 2.0% for MTV30 for readers 1 and 2). 70% of lesions required manual adjustment at MTV25 compared with 45% at MTV30. There was excellent inter-observer agreement between MTV30 to MTV60 (ICC ranged from 0.898-0.976 with narrow 95% confidence intervals (CIs)) and moderate agreement at lower thresholds (ICC estimates of 0.534 and 0.617, respectively for the MTV20 and MTV25 with wide 95% CIs). Bladder masking was performed in 86% of cases overall. For method 2, excellent correlation was demonstrated at MTV25 and MTV30 (mean % change from MRI volume of -3.9% and - 8.6% for MTV25 and - 16.9% and 19% for MTV30 for readers 1 and 2, respectively). This method also demonstrated excellent ICC across all thresholds with no manual adjustment. Method 3 demonstrated excellent ICC of 0.96 (95% CI 0.94-0.97) but had a mean percentage difference from the MRI volume of - 19.1 and - 18.2% for readers 1 and 2, respectively. 21% required manual adjustment for both readers. CONCLUSION: MTV30 provides the optimal correlation with MRI volume taking into consideration the excellent inter-reader agreement and less requirement for manual adjustment.

Recently, soft electronics have attracted significant attention for various applications such as flexible devices, artificial electronic skins, and wearable devices. For practical applications, the key requirements are an appropriate electrical conductivity and excellent elastic properties. Herein, using the cyano-silver complexes resulting from coordination bonds between the nitrile group of poly(styrene-co-acrylonitrile) (SAN) and Ag ions, a self-healing elastomer demonstrating electrical conductivity is obtained. Because of these coordination complexes, the Ag-SAN elastomer possesses elasticity, compared with pristine SAN. The fracture strain of the Ag-SAN elastomers increased with the amount of added Ag ions, reaching up to 1000%. Additionally, owing to the presence of reversible coordination bonds, the elastomer exhibits self-healing properties at room temperature and electrical conductivity, thereby improving the possibility of its utilization in novel applications wherein elastic materials are generally exposed to external stimuli.

Three-dimensional (3D) bioprinting is a technology under active study for use in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. Bioink comprises cells and polymers and is the essential material for 3D bioprinting. The characteristics of the bioink affect its printability, gelation behavior, and cell compatibility. In this study, alginate derivatives were synthesized to induce rapid gelation, and a bioink was prepared by mixing these alginate derivatives with silk fibroin to enhance cell compatibility. A low-concentration (3 wt %) alginate/silk fibroin (Alg/SF) bioink was pregelated by the ionic cross-linking of Alg to increase the viscosity for 3D printing. The rheological and mechanical properties were analyzed using a rheometer and a texture meter, respectively. Analysis of cell viability and proliferation using fibroblasts (NIH-3T3) in the bioinks showed that the Alg/SF bioink has improved cytocompatibility compared to that of conventional Alg bioinks, making it a promising material for tissue engineering.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the suitability of bioabsorbable materials for fixation of extended distal chevron osteotomy and Akin osteotomy for the treatment of moderate to severe hallux valgus. We performed a retrospective analysis of extended distal chevron osteotomy and Akin osteotomy for the treatment of moderate to severe hallux valgus (33 patients, 42 feet). Fixation of extended distal chevron osteotomy and Akin osteotomy was performed using poly-l-lactic acid pins and polylactic acid/polyglycolic acid copolymer sutures, respectively. The radiological outcomes were evaluated based on the preoperative and 3-year follow-up intermetatarsal angle, hallux valgus angle, and hallux interphalangeal angle. The clinical results were assessed according to 3-year follow-up Manchester-Oxford Foot Questionnaire scores, patient satisfaction, and postoperative complications. All radiological and clinical results were compared with those of a control group treated with metallic implants. The mean 3-year follow-up intermetatarsal angle, hallux valgus angle, and hallux interphalangeal angle were significantly corrected from the preoperative values (all p < .001). The mean 3-year follow-up Manchester-Oxford Foot Questionnaire scores score was significantly improved from the preoperative values (p < .001). Regarding patient satisfaction, 88.1% of the patients reported good to excellent results. A total of seven complications were reported. All radiological and clinical results were comparable with those of control group treated with metallic implant. Based on these results, we recommend using bioabsorbable materials as another reliable device for fixation of extended distal chevron osteotomy and Akin osteotomy even for the treatment of moderate to severe hallux valgus.

In this study, silver chloride nanoparticles (AgCl NPs) were prepared using chitosan oligomer (CHI) and chitosan oligomer derivatives (CHI-FITC). The CHI and CHI-FITC were used as markers to confirm the formation of AgCl NPs using their fluorescence properties as well as stabilizers. The fluorescence properties of CHI and CHI-FITC were monitored by a luminescence spectrophotometer, and the morphology of the AgCl NPs was further confirmed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The fluorescence of CHI and CHI-FITC was quenched by the formation of AgCl NPs, and the Stern-Volmer equation was used to compare the two types of stabilizer. The CHI and CHI-FITC stabilizer were linear and nonlinear, respectively, with respect to the Stern-Volmer equation, and considered to be usable as fluorescence indicators to confirm the formation behavior of AgCl NPs through fluorescence quenching.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to describe the patterns of relapse in uterine cancer (UC) and the role of surgery in the recurrent setting. METHODS: We describe surgical and clinical outcomes of all patients who underwent surgery for recurrent UC in a gynecological oncology tertiary referral center between May 1, 2013, and April 30, 2016. Progression-free survival and overall survival were estimated using Kaplan-Meier methods with the surgery at relapse being the starting point. RESULTS: We evaluated 15 patients with a median age of 66 years. The predominant histology was the endometrioid variant (n = 11; 73.3%). The median interval between the end of previous treatment and relapse surgery was 24 months (range, 8-164). Locoregional pelvic recurrences were the most common type of recurrence (n = 13; 86.7%) with the para-aortic lymph node space being the most commonly affected extrapelvic site (13%). Patients predominantly presented with a multifocal pattern of relapse (n = 10; 66.7%) requiring multivisceral resections such as bowel (n = 7; 46.6%) and/or bladder/ureteric resections (n = 8; 53.3%) to achieve complete tumor clearance. All patients were operated tumor free with a 30-day major morbidity and mortality rate of 6.7% and 0%, respectively. Five patients (33.3%) received postoperative chemotherapy or radiotherapy. Five patients (33.3%) relapsed, and 3 died within a mean follow-up of 12.4 months (95% confidence interval [CI], 6.5-18.2). Two of those patients had a sarcoma.Mean progression-free survival and overall survival for the entire cohort postrelapse surgery was 21.7 months (95%CI, 13.9-29.5) and 26.0 months (95%CI, 18.4-33.7), respectively. Survival was significantly worse in patients with nonendometrioid histology (P < 0.0001). CONCLUSIONS: Surgery for UC relapse seems feasible with acceptable morbidity and high complete resection rates despite the multifocal patterns of relapse in a selected group of patients in a reference center for gynecological cancers. Larger scale studies are warranted to establish the value of surgery at relapse for UC.

An aqueous solution was successfully prepared using a low-molecular-weight chitosan oligomer and FITC, and its structural and fluorescent properties were observed by using ¹H NMR, 13C NMR, FT-IR, XRD, UV-Vis, and PL spectrometry. Its application as a metal ion sensor was also evaluated. The fluorescence in the water-soluble chitosan oligomer was a result of the carbamato anion (NHCOO-), and a synthesized FITC-labeled chitosan oligomer exhibited an effective detection effect for copper ion as well as energy transfer by the ion near FITC that caused a fluorescence decrease (quenching). The chitosan oligomer was confirmed to be applicable as a selective and sensitive colorimetric sensor to detect Cu2+.

Locally advanced and node-positive cervical cancers are usually treated with external beam radiation therapy and intracavitary brachytherapy with concomitant chemotherapy. In patients with locally advanced cervical cancer, imaging plays a vital role in pretreatment planning, assessment of primary tumor response to treatment, follow-up, and evaluation of treatment-related complications. Radiation therapy planning is crucial to successful local and regional control of disease. Patient selection criteria for radiation therapy with concomitant chemotherapy are described, as is assessment of treatment response of the primary cervical tumor at magnetic resonance (MR) imaging. Image interpretation can be challenging because of radiation therapy-related changes in the pelvic organs. Expected changes in the bladder, bowel, and bone marrow after radiation therapy are described, and multimodality imaging findings at computed tomography, MR imaging, and fluorine 18 fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography are illustrated. Complications after radiation therapy have declined over recent years because of targeted radiation therapy. These complications can be divided into acute and chronic effects, where acute toxic effects occur within weeks of treatment. Chronic complications include cervical stenosis, small bowel stricture, fistula formation, and insufficiency fractures. Imaging is an essential tool in the care of patients with cervical cancer treated with chemotherapy and radiation therapy. The reporting radiologist should be familiar with the expected imaging appearances of the pelvic organs after radiation therapy, as well as potential complications, to avoid pitfalls in image interpretation.

This articles reports a simple and green method for preparing uniform silver nanoparticles (AgNPs), for which self-polymerized 3,4-dihydroxy-l-phenylalanine (polyDOPA) is used as the reducing and stabilizing agent in aqueous media. The AgNPs functionalized by polyDOPA were analyzed by UV-Vis spectroscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), Raman spectrophotometry, and X-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques. The results revealed that the polyDOPA-AgNPs with diameters of 25 nm were well dispersed due to the polyDOPA. It was noted that the polyDOPA-AgNPs showed selectivity for Pb2+ and Cu2+ detection with the detection limits for the two ions as low as 9.4 × 10-5 and 8.1 × 10-5 µM, respectively. Therefore, the polyDOPA-AgNPs can be applied to both Pb2+ and Cu2+ detection in real water samples. The proposed method will be useful for colorimetric detection of heavy metal ions in aqueous media.

Silk fibroin (SF) is a typical fibrous protein that is secreted by silkworms and spiders. It has been used in a variety of areas, and especially for tissue-engineering scaffolds, due to its sound processability, mechanical properties, biodegradability, and biocompatibility. With respect to gelation, the SF gelation time is long in aqueous solutions, so a novel approach is needed to shorten this time. The solubility of regenerated SF is sound in formic acid (FA), which is a carboxylic acid of the simplest structure. In this study, SF was dissolved in formic acid, and the addition of salts then induced a rapid gelation that accompanied a solution-color change. Based on the gelation behaviors of the SF solution according to different SF and salt concentrations, the gelation mechanism was investigated.

Nanocrystalline silver (Ag) and Ag containing nanostructure synthesized using various methods have been studied for their antimicrobial, wound healing, and anti-inflammatory efficacy. Among these, crystalline silver chloride (AgCl) nanostructures exhibit desirable properties for biological and biomedical applications. However, most of them are synthesized using hazardous agents and organic solvents, which has been limited for application in the biological field. A simple and environmentally friendly method was demonstrated for AgCl nanoparticles stabilized with chitosan oligomer (CHI-AgCl NPs) as both a resource of Cl ions and stabilizing agent with expectations of synergistic effects. The CHI-AgCl NPs stabilized by the chitosan oligomer had spherical morphology with a mean diameter of 42 ± 15 nm. Ag ions precipitated as AgCl in presence of Cl ions, which remained in the protonated amine group after HCl hydrolysis of the chitosan. Moreover, much of the amine and hydroxyl group bound to the AgCl NPs for growth and stabilization. These nanoparticles were characterized via various spectroscopic techniques, including UV-Vis spectrophotometry, X-ray photoelectron spectrometry, X-ray diffractometry, and transmission electron microscopy.

Ag nanoparticles (NPs) were synthesized in formic acid aqueous solutions through chemical reduction. Formic acid was used for a reducing agent of Ag precursor and solvent of gelatin. Silver acetate, silver tetrafluoroborate, silver nitrate, and silver phosphate were used as Ag precursors. Ag+ ions were reduced into Ag NPs by formic acid. The formation of Ag NPs was characterized by a UV-Vis spectrophotometer. Ag NPs were quickly generated within a few minutes in silver nitrate (AgNO3)/formic acid solution. As the water content of formic acid aqueous solution increased, more Ag NPs were generated, at a higher rate and with greater size. When gelatin was added to the AgNO3/formic acid solution, the Ag NPs were stabilized, resulting in smaller particles. Moreover, gelatin limits further aggregation of Ag NPs, which were effectively dispersed in solution. The amount of Ag NPs formed increased with increasing concentration of AgNO3 and aging time. Gelatin nanofibers containing Ag NPs were fabricated by electrospinning. The average diameters of gelatin nanofibers were 166.52 ± 32.72 nm, but these decreased with the addition of AgNO3. The average diameters of the Ag NPs in gelatin nanofibers ranged between 13 and 25 nm, which was confirmed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM).

Currently, commercial sunscreens cause a number of biotoxicity and environmental issues, making it imperative to develop biocompatible alternatives. In this study, we aimed to develop an alternative sunscreen from two ecofriendly and biocompatible natural polyphenolic compounds, tannic acid (TA) and quercetin (Que). The sunscreen was prepared through a simple process using an oil-in-water emulsion as the medium and hyaluronic acid (HA) as the base polymer to improve biocompatibility. The HA/TA/Que. sunscreen prepared in this study exhibits 0 % transmittance in the UVB region and <15 % transmittance in the UVA region, resulting in excellent sun-protection properties (SPF 30). Remarkably, the as-prepared HA/TA/Que. sunscreen has a suitable viscosity and similar UV protection properties to those of commercial sunscreens. The HA/TA/Que. sunscreen also exhibits 90.4 % antioxidant activity against 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl, demonstrating an ability to effectively capture reactive oxygen species that directly affect the skin. In addition, the cell viability was >90 % at a concentration of 50 µg/mL after 7 days, indicating excellent cytocompatibility. Owing to its various advantageous features, the HA/TA/Que. sunscreen with excellent sun protection properties and multiple functionalities is expected to resolve many environmental and biological issues caused by commercial sunscreens.

The substantial waste of perishable foods during transportation significantly contributes to greenhouse gas emissions, intensifying the climate crisis. To mitigate the rapid spoilage of fruits, an eco-friendly bilayer film was developed using natural egg white (EW), amylose (Am), and tannic acid (TA). The EW/Am-TA bilayer film features a primary layer of amphiphilic EW, ensuring a uniform coating on hydrophobic fruit surfaces, and a secondary layer composed of Am and TA, imparting notable tensile strength (5.3 ± 0.5 MPa) and elongation at break (28.5 ± 4.1 %). This bilayer film effectively shields fruits from UV-B and UV-C radiation (~0 % transmittance at 280 and 330 nm) and exhibits antioxidant and antibacterial properties due to the presence of TA. Fruits such as bananas, avocados, and cherry tomatoes, when dip-coated with the optimized EW/Am-TA bilayer, maintained their freshness, color, weight, and texture for up to seven days, demonstrating the effectiveness of this bilayer coating in food preservation. The natural materials in the coated film are edible and can be safely removed with tap water at room temperature in <10 s, posing no food safety risks. Thus, the proposed bilayer coating presents a significant solution to the global problem of food waste.

Recently, the incidence of Achilles tendon ruptures (ATRs) has become more common, and repair surgery using a bioabsorbable suture is generally preferred, particularly in the case of healthy patients. Sutures composed of poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) are commonly used in ATR surgeries. Nevertheless, owing to the inherent limitations of PLGA, novel bioabsorbable sutures that can accelerate Achilles tendon healing are sought. Recently, several studies have demonstrated the beneficial effects of atelocollagen on tendon healing. In this study, poly(3,4-dihydroxy-L-phenylalanine) (pDOPA), a hydrophilic biomimetic material, was used to modify the hydrophobic surface of a PLGA suture (Vicryl, VC) for the stable coating of atelocollagen on its surface. The main objective was to fabricate an atelocollagen-coated VC suture and evaluate its performance in the healing of Achilles tendon using a rat model of open repair for ATR. Structural analyses of the surface-modified suture indicated that the collagen was successfully coated on the VC/pDOPA suture. Postoperative in vivo biomechanical analysis, histological evaluation, ultrastructural/morphological analyses, and western blotting confirmed that the tendons in the VC/pDOPA/Col group exhibit superior healing than those in the VC and VC/pDOPA groups after 1 and 6 weeks following the surgery. The this study suggests that atelocollagen-coated PLGA/pDOPA sutures are preferable for future medical applications, especially in the repair of ATR.

Bioadhesives derived from biomass are steadily gaining spotlight as substitutes for formaldehyde-based resins in the adhesive industry. However, there is a need to develop novel water-resistant bioadhesives with high adhesive and cohesive strengths because the currently available biomaterial-based adhesives have low mechanical strength. In this study, a complex coacervate was prepared easily by mixing silk fibroin and tannic acid to produce a bioadhesive with high adhesive and cohesive strengths as well as water resistance. The silk fibroin-tannic acid coacervate adhered well to various substrates, and its adhesive strength according to the type of substrate and water contact angle were evaluated comparatively. In particular, the adhesive strength of this adhesive on a wood substrate was systematically analyzed by varying different experimental parameters (relative humidity, surface roughness of the substrate, water stability, and pH). This cost-effective coacervate is applicable as an eco-friendly wood adhesive.

Malignant tumors have emerged as a serious health issue, and the interest in developing pH-sensitive polymers for site-specific drug delivery has increased. The physical and/or chemical properties of pH-sensitive polymers depend on the pH, and thus, drugs can be released by cleaving dynamic covalent and/or noncovalent bonds. In this study, gallic acid (GA) was conjugated to chitosan (CS) to prepare self-crosslinked hydrogel beads containing Schiff base (imine bond) crosslinks. The CS-GA hydrogel beads were formed by the dropwise addition of the CS-GA conjugate solution into a Tris-HCl buffer solution (TBS, pH 8.5). The pH-sensitivity of pristine CS was significantly enhanced following the introduction of GA moiety, and as a result, the CS-GA hydrogel beads swelled more than approximately 5000 % at pH 4.0, indicating an excellent swelling/deswelling ability of the beads at different pH (pH 4.0 and 8.5). The reversible breakage/recovery of the imine crosslinks in the CS-GA hydrogel beads was confirmed through X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic and rheological studies. Finally, Rhodamine B was loaded onto the hydrogel beads as a model drug to investigate the pH-sensitive drug release behavior. At pH 4, the drug was released up to approximately 83 % within 12 h. The findings indicate that the CS-GA hydrogel beads have great potential as a drug delivery system that is sensitive to acidic tumor sites in the body.
