The existing literature on the rise velocities of air bubbles in aqueous surfactant solutions adsorbing at the water-air interface focuses mainly on large bubbles (D > 1.2 mm). In addition, due to the way the bubbles in rising bubble experiments are formed, their size is dependent on interfacial tension (the lower the interfacial tension the smaller the bubble). In this paper, smaller air bubbles (D < 505 ± 3 µm) are used to investigate the effect of the bubble size on the detection of two flotation frothers of different adsorption kinetics via bubble rise velocity measurements. We use an alternative method for bubble generation, allowing us to compare the rise velocity of bubbles of the same size in solutions of frothers of varying bulk concentration. The approach taken (ensuring consistent bubble size) ascertains that the buoyancy force component is kept constant when comparing the different solutions. As a consequence, any variations in the bubble rise velocity can be related to changes in the hydrodynamic drag force acting on a rising bubble. The interfacial behavior of frothers, i.e. the adsorption kinetics, interfacial activity and the maximum amount of molecules adsorbed at the interface, are determined from interfacial tension measurements and adsorption isotherms. The differences in the degree of tangential immobilisation caused by two different frothers are discussed in the context of differences in the structure of the dynamic adsorption layer, which is formed during the bubble rise.

OBJECTIVES: Autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) is a progressive liver disease managed with corticosteroids and immunosuppression and monitored using a combination of liver biochemistry and histology. However, liver biopsy is invasive with risk of pain and bleeding. The aim of the present study was to investigate the utility of noninvasive imaging with multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) (mpMRI) to provide clinically useful information on the presence and extent of hepatic inflammation, potentially guiding immunosuppression. METHODS: Eighty-one participants (aged 6-18), 21 healthy and 60 AIH patients, underwent multiparametric MRI to measure fibro-inflammation with iron-corrected T1 (cT1) at the Children's Memorial Health Institute in Warsaw alongside other clinical blood tests and liver biopsy at recruitment and after an average of 16-month follow-up (range 9-22 months). Correlation analyses were used to investigate the associations between cT1 with blood serum markers and histological scores. RESULTS: At recruitment, patients with AIH had a higher cT1 value than healthy controls (P < 0.01). cT1 correlated significantly with key histopathological features of disease. Treatment naïve AIH patients showed evidence of inflammation and heterogeneity across the liver compared to healthy controls.At follow-up, cT1 showed utility in monitoring disease regression as most patients showed significantly reduced fibro-inflammation with treatment (P < 0.0001) over the observational period. Six patients had histological fibrosis and clear fibro-inflammation on MR despite biochemical remission (normalized aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), and immunoglobulin G [IgG]). CONCLUSIONS: Multiparametric MRI can measure disease burden in pediatric AIH and can show changes over time in response to therapy. Active disease can be seen even in biochemical remission in children.

PURPOSE: The purpose of our study was to determine the prevalence of spinal cord lesions revealed by magnetic resonance (MR) imaging in children and adolescents with clinically definite multiple sclerosis (MS). MATERIAL AND METHODS: We retrospectively evaluated the spinal cord magnetic resonance examinations in a group of MS patients consisting of 58 children (37 girls and 21 boys) aged from 7 to 17.8 years (mean 13.7 years). All children met the criteria of clinically definite MS and had typical MS lesions revealed in the brain imaging. RESULTS: Spinal cord lesions, regardless of localization, were identified in 36 (62%) patients. In 22 of 58 patients (38%) no lesions were observed. The plaques were found in the cervical spinal cord and the thoracic spinal cord in 30 out of 36 (86.1%) and in 31 out of 36 (88.6%) patients, respectively. Contrast enhancement was noticed in 10 out of 36 patients (27.7%) and was not correlated with the number of lesions present. We noticed a tendency to higher EDSS score in patients with lesions in more than 1 spinal cord region. Our study showed that spinal cord lesions are more frequently present in patients with complex neurological disability. CONCLUSION: The prevalence of spinal cord lesions in children and adolescents with MS is high. Therefore, spinal cord MRI should be included in diagnostic program of MS.

HYPOTHESIS: Naturally extracted polysaccharides, such as guar gum, are promising candidates for environmentally friendly flotation reagents. It is hypothesized that the kinetics of collision of sub- to millimeter gas bubbles with a hydrophobic graphite surface, and the stability of thin liquid film formed between the bubble and surface is affected by an adsorbed layer of guar gum. EXPERIMENTS: A combination of gravimetric (quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation) and imaging (atomic force microscopy) techniques was used to investigate the adsorption of guar gum on graphite surface, while high-speed camera imaging allowed for direct observation of the bubble collision process with guar gum-modified graphite surfaces with millisecond resolution. FINDINGS: Atomic force microscope topography images revealed a guar gum concentration-dependent interconnected network of guar gum molecules adsorbed at graphite surface. These adsorbed molecules at low surface coverage, changed the wettability of the graphite surface, resulting in a film drainage time longer by an order of magnitude, while at higher surface coverage successfully prevented bubble attachment to the graphite surface. Most importantly, the adsorbed layer changed the strength of the bubble's bouncing off the graphite surface. This enhanced bubble bouncing can be correlated with the film drainage time and used to predict a successful bubble-particle attachment.

Wilson disease (WD) is a liver disorder characterized by improper copper metabolism. Although non-invasive tools are currently used to support diagnosis and management, this is still an area of unmet need, as patients present with a wide range of symptoms. Our aim was to investigate the potential utility of multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging (mpMRI) and quantitative magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography (MRCP+) to support patient management. MRI examinations of 7 children and young adults aged 8-16 years (six at diagnosis) were performed alongside a standard of care clinical and histological examination. Images were quantitatively analyzed to derive metrics of liver (corrected T1 (cT1; fibro-inflammation), MR liver fat (proton density fat fraction; PDFF)), and biliary health (MRCP+). MRI-PDFF provided a more dynamic characterization of fat compared with that provided by ultrasound. Those with elevated histological scores of fibrosis, inflammation, and steatosis had elevated mpMRI values. MRCP+ managed to identify dilatations in the biliary tree which were not observed during the standard of care examination. mpMRI and MRCP+ metrics show early promise as markers to assess both liver and biliary health in Wilson disease. Investigations to understand and explore the utility of these markers are warranted and should be performed.

Autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) and autoimmune sclerosing cholangitis (ASC) are two very closely related autoimmune liver diseases with overlapping clinical features and similar management strategies. The purpose of this study was to assess the utility of quantitative imaging markers to distinguish ASC from AIH in paediatrics. 66 participants (N = 52 AIH, N = 14 ASC) aged 14.4 ± 3.3 years scheduled to undergo routine biopsy and baseline serum liver biochemistry testing were invited to undergo MRI (non-contrast abdominal MRI and 3D fast spin-echo MRCP). Multiparametric MRI was used to measure fibro-inflammation with corrected T1 (cT1), while the biliary tree was modelled   using quantitative MRCP (MRCP +). Mann-Whitney U tests were performed to compare liver function tests with imaging markers between patient groups (ASC vs AIH). Receiver operating characteristic curves and stepwise logistic regressions were used to identify the best combination of markers to discriminate between ASC and AIH. Correlations between liver function tests and imaging markers were performed using Spearman's rank correlation. cT1 was significantly correlated with liver function tests (range 0.33 ≤ R ≤ 56, p < 0.05), as well as with fibrosis, lobular and portal inflammation (range 0.31 ≤ R ≤ 42, p < 0.05). 19 MRCP + metrics correlated significantly with liver function tests (range 0.29 ≤ R ≤ 0.43, p < 0.05). GGT and MRCP + metrics were significantly higher in ASC compared to those with AIH. The best multivariable model for distinguishing ASC from AIH included total number of ducts and the sum of relative severity of both strictures and dilatations AUC: 0.91 (95% CI 0.78-1). Quantitative MRCP metrics are a good discriminator of ASC from AIH.

HYPOTHESIS: Odd-even effects in polysaccharide polyelectrolyte multilayers influence their hydration content and the chemical environment of the water within them. EXPERIMENTS: Polysaccharide polyelectrolyte multilayers (PEMs) composed of pharmaceutical grade fucoidan and chitosan were studied under confinement using synchrotron FTIR microspectroscopy at increasing pressure, in order to isolate and measure infrared spectra of water within the PEM, without interference from bulk water. Complementary studies of the PEMs were carried out using lab-based in situ attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform spectroscopy (ATR FTIR) and quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring (QCM-D), as well as zeta potential measurements, to determine the quantity of adsorbed polymer, hydration content, film thickness, viscoelastic properties and surface charge during layer-by-layer deposition. FINDINGS: The hydration of the PEM followed a saw-tooth profile, known as the odd-even effect, where the film increased hydration with fucoidan adsorption and dehydrated/densified with chitosan adsorption. The water structure within the film showed a lower degree of hydrogen bonding than water in the bulk electrolyte. However, the water structure/environment was independent of the terminating layer of the PEM, in spite of the alteration in percentage hydration water, indicating only a partial proof of the initial hypothesis for this multilayer system (hydration amount changes, hydration water environment does not).

Soft polymer films, such as polyelectrolyte multilayers (PEMs), are useful coatings in materials science. The properties of PEMs often rely on the degree of hydration, and therefore the study of these films in a hydrated state is critical to allow links to be drawn between their characteristics and performance in a particular application. In this work, we detail the development of a novel soft contact cell for studying hydrated PEMs (poly(sodium 4-styrenesulfonate)/poly(allylamine hydrochloride)) using FTIR microspectroscopy. FTIR spectroscopy can interrogate the nature of the polymer film and the hydration water contained therein. In addition to reporting spectra obtained for hydrated films confined at the solid-solid interface, we also report traditional ATR FTIR spectra of the multilayer. The spectra (microspectroscopy and ATR FTIR) reveal that the PEM film build-up proceeds as expected based on the layer-by-layer assembly methodology, with increasing signals from the polymer FTIR peaks with increasing bilayer number. In addition, the spectra obtained using the soft contact cell indicate that the PEM film hydration water has an environment/degree of hydrogen bonding that is affected by the chemistry of the multilayer polymers, based on differences in the spectra obtained for the hydration water within the film compared to that of bulk electrolyte.

Radioguided surgery using 68-gallium labelled somatostatin analogues is a promising method for detection of small, intra-abdominal, neuroendocrine neoplasm (NEN). However, due to high background activity (physiological uptake in e.g. spleen, adrenal glands and kidneys) tumours of the tail and body of pancreas might be impossible to detect with hand-held gamma probe. Therefore a new concept of intraoperative PET/CT scan of the resected tissue can be helpful in determining whether the tumour has been excised within the margins of healthy tissue. A 71-year-old woman with primary, non-metastatic NEN of the tail of pancreas is described. The tumour was diagnosed using MRI and PET/CT scan. Before operation patient was administered intravenously 80 MBq of 68Ga-DOTATATE. The surgery procedure was performed 60-180 minutes post injection. During the procedure pancreas was visualized, but the tumour could not be localized neither with palpation nor gamma probe. The tail of the pancreas was resected en bloc with spleen and adjacent lymph nodes. PET/CT scan of the tissue specimen was performed immediately followed by pathological examination. PET/CT scan of the resected tissue showed moderate activity in the tail of pancreas, and a small focus of high activity in the tail. Area of high SSTR expression in the tail corresponded with preoperative findings in MRI and whole-body PET/CT. Histopathological examination of the specimen confirmed the presence of neuroendocrine tumour grade 1. Immediate PET/CT scan of the surgical specimen can bring new quality to intraoperative assessment of completeness of resection of neuroendocrine tumours.
