RESUMO

This study investigated the application of adsorption with activated carbons (ACs) and photodegradation to reduce the concentration of triclosan (TCS) in aqueous solutions. Concerning adsorption, ACs (Darco, Norit, and F400) were characterised and batch experiments were performed to elucidate the effect of pH on equilibrium. The results showed that at pH = 7, the maximum adsorption capacity of TCS onto the ACs was 18.5 mg g-1 for Darco, 16.0 mg g-1 for Norit, and 15.5 mg g-1 for F400. The diffusional kinetic model allowed an adequate interpretation of the experimental data. The effective diffusivity varied and increased with the amount of TCS adsorbed, from 1.06 to 1.68 × 10-8 cm2 s-1. In the case of photodegradation, it was possible to ensure that the triclosan molecule was sensitive to UV light of 254 nm because the removal was over 80 % using UV light. The removal of TCS increased in the presence of sulfate radicals. It was possible to identify 2,4-dichlorophenol as one of the photolytic degradation products of triclosan, which does not represent an environmental hazard at low concentrations of triclosan in water. These results confirm that the use of AC Darco, Norit, and F400 and that photodegradation processes with UV light and persulfate radicals are effective in removing TCS from water, reaching concentration levels that do not constitute a risk to human health or environmental hazard. Both methods effectively eliminate pollutants with relatively easy techniques to implement.

We aimed to explore the relationship of adipose tissue concentrations of some persistent organic pollutants (POPs) with the risk of endometriosis and the endometriotic tissue expression profile of genes related to the endometriosis-related epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) process. This case-control study enrolled 109 women (34 cases and 75 controls) between January 2018 and March 2020. Adipose tissue samples and endometriotic tissues were intraoperatively collected to determine concentrations of nine POPs and the gene expression profiles of 36 EMT-related genes, respectively. Associations of POPs with endometriosis risk were explored with multivariate logistic regression, while the relationship between exposure and gene expression profiles was assessed through Spearman correlation or Mann-Whitney U tests. After adjustment, increased endometriosis risk was associated with p,p'-DDT, PCB-180, and ΣPCBs. POP exposure was also associated with reduced gene expression levels of the CLDN7 epithelial marker and increased levels of the ITGB2 mesenchymal marker and a variety of EMT promoters (HMGA1, HOXA10, FOXM1, DKK1, CCR1, TNFRSF1B, RRM2, ANG, ANGPT1, and ESR1). Our findings indicate that exposure to POPs may increase the risk of endometriosis and might have a role in the endometriosis-related EMT development, contributing to the disease onset and progression. Further studies are warranted to corroborate these findings.

The associations between human phthalate exposure and the onset of chronic diseases with an immunological component (e.g., metabolic syndrome, cancer) remain unclear, partly due to the uncertainties in the underlying mechanisms. This study investigates cross-sectional associations of the concentrations of 10 phthalate metabolites with 19 cytokines and acute phase proteins in 213 serum samples of Spanish adults. The associations were explored by Spearman's correlation, multivariable linear regression, and weighted quantile sum regression analyses. In the multivariable analyses, levels of plasminogen activator inhibitor (PAI)-1 were positively associated with mono-n-butyl phthalate (fold-change per one IQR increase in phthalate levels, 95% Confidence Interval: 1.65, 1.45-1.88) and mono-iso-butyl phthalate (3.07, 2.39-3.95), mono-ethyl phthalate (2.05, 1.62-2.61), as well as categorized mono-iso-decyl and mono-benzyl phthalates. The same phthalates also were significantly associated with leptin, interleukin (IL)-18 and monocyte chemoattractant protein-1. Moreover, the proinflammatory markers IL-1ß, IL-17, IL-8, IL-6, IL-12, tumor necrosis factor, and lipopolysaccharide-binding protein showed positive and negative associations with, respectively, mono-(2-ethyl-hexyl) and mono-methyl phthalates. Finally, phthalate mixtures were positively associated with PAI-1, leptin, IL-18, IL-12, IL-8 and IL-1ß. Despite the cross-sectional design limitation, these associations point to relevant subclinical immuno-inflammatory actions of these pollutants, warranting confirmation in future studies.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effectiveness of "Physio-EndEA", a multimodal nine-week supervised exercise intervention, on quality of life, pain, and lumbopelvic impairments in women with endometriosis unresponsive to conventional therapy. DESIGN: Parallel-group randomized controlled trial. Outcomes were measured at baseline, post-intervention, and at 1 year. SETTING: Two Public University Hospitals. PARTICIPANTS: This trial included 31 women with endometriosis (N=31) randomly allocated to "Physio-EndEA" group (n=16) or control group (n=15). Four participants dropped out of the study for causes unrelated to the intervention. INTERVENTIONS: The "Physio-EndEA" program consisted of a 1-week lumbopelvic stabilization learning phase followed by an 8-week phase of stretching, aerobic, and resistance exercises focused on the lumbopelvic area. It was sequentially instructed and supervised by a trained physiotherapist (with volume and intensity progression) and adapted daily to the potential of each participant. Control group received the usual treatment stipulated by their gynecologist. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: The primary outcome was quality of life. Secondary outcomes were pain intensity, pressure pain thresholds, pain-related catastrophic thoughts, abdominal and back strength, lumbopelvic stability, and muscle architecture. RESULTS: Adherence rate was 90.6% and mean (±standard deviation) satisfaction was 9.44±0.73 out of 10. No remarkable health problems were reported during the trial. In comparison with controls, the quality of life was improved post-intervention and at 1 year in the Physio-EndEA group with large effect sizes (d>0.80). This group also evidenced: a reduced intensity of dyspareunia, catastrophic thoughts; an increase in pelvic, lumbar, and distal pressure pain thresholds; increases in abdominal and back strength and lumbopelvic stability; and increased thickness of transversus abdominis (right side) and width of lumbar multifidus (left side). CONCLUSION: A 9-week program of multimodal supervised therapeutic exercise is a feasible and effective intervention to improve QoL in women with endometriosis. This program also offers benefits in terms of pain/sensitization and lumbopelvic impairments.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Primary stability (PS) is remarkable for secondary stability and implant success. Surgical technique modifications seem to improve primary stability, especially in poor quality bone. The aim of this study was to compare the insertion torque (IT) and implant stability quotients (ISQ) of implants placed with underpreparation, expanders, and standard surgical instrumentation in different bone types. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This randomized controlled clinical trial enrolled 108 patients (n=108 implants) distributed in three study groups: group 1 (n=36) underpreparation technique, group 2 (n=36) expander technique, and group 3 (n=36) conventional drilling. IT was recorded with a torque indicator. ISQ was recorded with resonance frequency analysis immediately after surgery. RESULTS: ISQ values were associated with the patient's bone quality and were higher in bone quality type II (76.65) and type III (73.60) and lower in bone quality type IV (67.34), with statistically significant differences (p<0.0001). Lower stability results were obtained when conventional drilling (69.31) was used compared to the use of underpreparation (74.29) or expanders (73.99) with a level of significance of p=0.008 and p=0.005, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: The surgical technique influences the PS when there is low-quality bone. In low-quality bones, conventional drilling obtains lower ISQ values. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Replace the conventional drilling technique for an alternative, underpreparation or expanders, in low-quality bone in order to achieve greater primary stability.

Bisphenols, parabens (PBs), and benzophenones (BPs) are widely used environmental chemicals that have been linked to several adverse health effects due to their endocrine disrupting properties. However, the cellular pathways through which these chemicals lead to adverse outcomes in humans are still unclear, suggesting some evidence that inflammation might play a key role. Thus, the aim of this study was to summarize the current evidence on the relationship between human exposure to these chemicals and levels of inflammatory biomarkers. A systematic review of peer-reviewed original research studies published up to February 2023 was conducted using the MEDLINE, Web of Science, and Scopus databases. A total of 20 articles met the inclusion/exclusion criteria. Most of the reviewed studies reported significant associations between any of the selected chemicals (mainly bisphenol A) and some pro-inflammatory biomarkers (including C-reactive protein and interleukin 6, among others). Taken together, this systematic review has identified consistent positive associations between human exposure to some chemicals and levels of pro-inflammatory biomarkers, with very few studies exploring the associations between PBs and/or BPs and inflammation. Therefore, a larger number of studies are required to get a better understanding on the mechanisms of action underlying bisphenols, PBs, and BPs and the critical role that inflammation could play.

Increasing evidence has been published over recent years on the implication of endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs), including parabens and benzophenones in the pathogenesis and pathophysiology of endometriosis. However, to the best of our knowledge, no study has been published on the ways in which exposure to EDCs might affect cell-signaling pathways related to endometriosis. We aimed to describe the endometriotic tissue expression profile of a panel of 23 genes related to crucial cell-signaling pathways for the development and progression of endometriosis (cell adhesion, invasion/migration, inflammation, angiogenesis, and cell proliferation/hormone stimulation) and explore its relationship with the exposure of patients to parabens (PBs) and benzophenones (BPs). This cross-sectional study included a subsample of 33 women with endometriosis from the EndEA study, measuring their endometriotic tissue expressions of 23 genes, while urinary concentrations of methyl-, ethyl-, propyl-, butyl-paraben, benzophenone-1, benzophenone-3, and 4-hydroxybenzophenone were determined in 22 women. Spearman's correlations test and linear and logistic regression analyses were performed. The expression of 52.2% of studied genes was observed in >75% of endometriotic tissue samples and the expression of 17.4% (n = 4) of them in 50-75%. Exposure to certain PB and BP congeners was positively associated with the expression of key genes for the development and proliferation of endometriosis. Genes related to the development and progression of endometriosis were expressed in most endometriotic tissue samples studied, suggesting that exposure of women to PBs and BPs may be associated with the altered expression profile of genes related to cellular pathways involved in the development of endometriosis.

We studied the chemical composition of As and Pb in total (<2 mm) and fine fractions (<50 µm) of 52 urban soil samples from Minas de Riotinto (mining area) and Aracena (non-exposed area) in SW Spain. In addition to a soil phytotoxicity bioassay using Lactuca Sativa L., we modelled and performed carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic human health risk assessment, later comparing our data with relative cancer mortality rates reported at the municipal level. This study demonstrates that mineralized bedrock and natural soil-forming processes affect the geochemistry of natural (in-situ) urban soils, which in many cases surpass the regulatory levels for As (36 mg/kg) and Pb (275 mg/kg). Fine fractions of in-situ and mixed urban soils -susceptible of inhalation- are significantly enriched in As and Pb with respect to fine fractions of aggregate materials (ex-situ soils of chalky sands and gravel) in Minas de Riotinto. The soils in Minas de Riotinto are significantly enriched in As (total and fine fractions) and Pb (total fraction) with respect to Aracena. Despite elevated bulk concentrations of As and Pb, only one in-situ sample exhibits phytotoxic effects of the soil-water extracts on Lactuca Sativa L. seeds. Health risk assessment of these towns as exposure areas indicates that the soils of Minas de Riotinto are indeed a health risk to the residents, whereas there is no potential risk in Aracena. The reported relative mortality rates in Minas de Riotinto show a greater mortality of carcinogenic tumors potentially related to As and Pb exposure, including lung cancer. Both soil type and use must be considered when administrators or policy-makers evaluate health risks involved in urbanistic decision-making. To minimize exposure risk and adverse health outcomes, we recommend that in-situ soils surpassing regulatory levels for As and Pb in public playgrounds and passing areas should be covered with aggregate materials.

BACKGROUND: Numerous contemporary non-persistent pesticides may elicit neurodevelopmental impairments. Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) has been proposed as a novel effect biomarker of neurological function that could help to understand the biological responses of some environmental exposures. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the relationship between exposure to various non-persistent pesticides, BDNF, and behavioral functioning among adolescents. METHODS: The concentrations of organophosphate (OP) insecticide metabolites 3,5,6-trichloro-2-pyridinol (TCPy), 2-isopropyl-4-methyl-6-hydroxypyrimidine (IMPy), malathion diacid (MDA), and diethyl thiophosphate (DETP); metabolites of pyrethroids 3-phenoxybenzoic acid (3-PBA) and dimethylcyclopropane carboxylic acid (DCCA), the metabolite of insecticide carbaryl 1-naphthol (1-N), and the metabolite of ethylene-bis-dithiocarbamate fungicides ethylene thiourea (ETU) were measured in spot urine samples, as well as serum BDNF protein levels and blood DNA methylation of Exon IV of BDNF gene in 15-17-year-old boys from the INMA-Granada cohort in Spain. Adolescents' behavior was reported by parents using the Child Behavior Check List (CBCL/6-18). This study included 140 adolescents of whom 118 had data on BDNF gene DNA methylation. Multivariable linear regression, weighted quantile sum (WQS) for mixture effects, and mediation models were fit. RESULTS: IMPy, MDA, DCCA, and ETU were detected in more than 70% of urine samples, DETP in 53%, and TCPy, 3-PBA, and 1-N in less than 50% of samples. Higher levels of IMPy, TCPy, and ETU were significantly associated with more behavioral problems as social, thought problems, and rule-breaking symptoms. IMPy, MDA, DETP, and 1-N were significantly associated with decreased serum BDNF levels, while MDA, 3-PBA, and ETU were associated with higher DNA methylation percentages at several CpGs. WQS models suggest a mixture effect on more behavioral problems and BDNF DNA methylation at several CpGs. A mediated effect of serum BDNF within IMPy-thought and IMPy-rule breaking associations was suggested. CONCLUSION: BDNF biomarkers measured at different levels of biological complexity provided novel information regarding the potential disruption of behavioral function due to contemporary pesticides, highlighting exposure to diazinon (IMPy) and the combined effect of IMPy, MDA, DCCA, and ETU. However, further research is warranted.

In Europe, countries following the traditional Mediterranean Diet (MeDi), particularly Southern European countries, have lower prostate cancer (PCa) incidence and mortality compared to other European regions. In the present study, we investigated the association between the MeDi and the relative risk of PCa and tumor aggressiveness in a Spanish population. Among individual score components, it has been found that subjects with PCa were less likely to consume olive oil as the main culinary fat, vegetables, fruits and fish than those without. However, these differences were not statistically significative. A high intake of fruit, vegetables and cooked tomato sauce Mediterranean style (sofrito) was related to less PCa aggressiveness. Results showed that there are no differences in the score of adherence to the Mediterranean dietary patterns between cases and controls, with mean values of 8.37 ± 1.80 and 8.25 ± 2.48, respectively. However, MeDi was associated with lower PCa agressiveness according to Gleason score. Hence, relations between Mediterranean dietary patterns and PCa are still inconclusive and merit further investigations. Further large-scale studies are required to clarify the effect of MeDi on prostate health, in order to establish the role of this diet in the prevention of PCa.

There is an increasing evidence for a link between nutrition, lifestyle and prostate cancer (PCa) development and/or progression of disease. The objective of this study was to examine the association between dietary factors and PCa incidence and aggressiveness in a case-control study. After the analysis of the anatomic pathology, subjects were classified in patients with PCa (n = 157) and controls (n = 158). Clinical data including Gleason score, PSA values and biopsy results, were compiled. Frequencies of food consumption and sociodemographic data were also obtained. The results showed that physical activity was significantly higher in control (p < .022). It was also found that some nutritional habits offer a protective effect among studied subjects, like high nuts (p = .041) and fish (p = .041) intakes. Moreover, there was a significant reduction in risk (p = .029) in cases with a higher fruits and vegetables intakes. A decreased risk of aggressive PCa was associated with fruits, vegetables, legumes and fish intakes. However, these relationships were not statistically significant when data were adjusted for covariates. In conclusion, this study found an inverse association between PCa risk and the intake of fruits and vegetables, fish and nuts. The results suggested that a diet with higher intakes of these foods as Mediterranean diet may lower the risk of PCa in the studied population. As dietary factors are modifiable, identifying food groups or dietary patterns that modulate the risk of PCa and its aggressiveness can offer effective and practical strategies for its primary prevention.

In this study, we estimated the risk of acute coronary syndrome and stroke associated with several emerging cardiovascular risk factors. This was a case-control study, where an age - and sex-matched acute coronary syndrome group and stroke group were compared with controls. Demographic and clinical data were collected through patient interviews, and blood samples were taken for analysis. In the bivariate analysis, all cardiovascular risk factors analyzed showed as predictors of acute coronary syndrome and stroke, except total cholesterol and smoking. In the multivariate logistic regression model for acute coronary syndrome, hypertension and body mass index, N-terminal section brain natriuretic peptide and pregnancy-associated plasma protein-A were independent predictors. For stroke, the predictors were hypertension, diabetes mellitus, body mass index, and N-terminal section brain natriuretic peptide. Controlling for age, sex, and classical cardiovascular risk factors, N-terminal section brain natriuretic peptide and pregnancy-associated plasma protein-A were independent emerging cardiovascular risk factors for acute coronary syndrome, but pregnancy-associated plasma protein-A was not for stroke. High levels of cardiovascular risk factors in individuals with no episodes of cardiovascular disease requires the implementation of prevention programs, given that at least half of them are modifiable.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to compare levels of bacterial contamination of autogenous bone collected when using low-speed drilling, a back-action chisel, and a bone filter. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Bone tissue samples were taken from 31 patients who underwent surgical extraction of their third lower molars. Before surgical removal of the molar, bone particles were collected by a low-speed drill or a back-action chisel. Then, a stringent aspiration protocol was applied during the ostectomy to collect particulate bone by a bone filter. Processing of samples commenced immediately by incubation in an anaerobic or a CO2-rich atmosphere. The number of colony-forming units (CFUs) was determined at 48 hours of culture. RESULTS: No significant difference in the number of CFUs per milliliter was observed between the low-speed drilling group and the back-action chisel group in the anaerobic or CO2-rich condition (P = .34). However, significantly more micro-organisms were found in the bone filter group than in the low-speed drilling group or the back-action chisel group in the anaerobic and CO2-rich conditions (P < .001). CONCLUSIONS: Particulate bone harvested with low-speed drilling or a back-action chisel is safer for use as an autograft than are bone particles collected with a bone filter. These results suggest that bone obtained from low-speed drilling is safe and straightforward to harvest and could be the method of choice for collecting particulate bone. Further research is needed to lower the bacterial contamination levels of autogenous bone particles used as graft material.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To consider using arm span rather than height for calculating the body mass index, as a parameter that offers greater long-term stability, for the nutritional assessment of persons aged over 65 years. BACKGROUND: The body mass index presents certain drawbacks for the nutritional screening of older people suffering malnutrition or at risk of malnutrition, due to the anthropometric changes that occur with increasing age, especially the progressive loss of height. DESIGN: Observational, cross-sectional study, using nonprobabilistic convenience sampling, with anthropometric measurements and nutritional screening in older men and women, divided into two groups: (1) aged 65-75 years and (2) aged over 75 years. METHODOLOGY: Height and arm span were measured to calculate two separate indices of body mass: body mass index (weight/height) and body mass index.1 (weight/arm span). Nutritional screening was conducted using the Mini Nutritional Assessment Short-Form, which includes the body mass index as an anthropometric measure. RESULTS: Our results reveal statistically significant differences between the two indices, for the sample analysed. Body mass index.1 classifies a larger number of older people as suffering malnutrition and fewer as being at nutritional risk. When this new index is used, there is a displacement of the subjects at risk, thus increasing the number considered at risk of malnutrition and in need of appropriate therapeutic intervention. Therefore, the use of body mass index.1 would enable more people suffering malnutrition, who would otherwise remain untreated, to be attended. CONCLUSIONS: As arm span, as an anthropometric measure, remains unchanged over time, it could be used instead of height, as an alternative index (body mass index.1) to the conventional body mass index. Further research is needed to determine the association between body mass index.1 and clinical status parameters to determine optimum cut-off points. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE: This study describes the greater stability of body mass index.1 with respect to body mass index for nutritional screening, and the resulting benefits for nutritional monitoring and intervention for older people.

Major concerns have been raised about human exposure to endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) during pregnancy. Effective methodologies for the assessment of this exposure are needed to support the implementation of preventive measures and the prediction of negative health effects. Meconium has proven a valuable non-invasive matrix for evaluating cumulative exposure to xenobiotics during the last two trimesters of pregnancy. The study objective was to develop a novel method to determine the presence in meconium of perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs), bisphenols, parabens, and benzophenones, EDCs that are widely used in the manufacture of numerous consumer goods and personal care products, including cosmetics. Ten PFASs, two bisphenols, four parabens, and four benzophenones were measured in meconium samples prepared by using a combination of Captiva Enhanced Matrix Removal (EMR) lipid cartridges with salt-assisted liquid-liquid extraction (SALLE) and dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction (DLLME) before the application of liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). Experimental parameters were optimized by applying different chemometric techniques. Limits of detection ranged from 0.05 to 0.1 ng g-1, and between-day variabilities (relative standard deviations) ranged from 6.5% to 14.5%. The method was validated by matrix-matched standard calibration followed by a recovery assay with spiked samples, obtaining percentage recoveries of 89.9% to 114.8%. The method was then employed to measure compounds not previously studied in this matrix in 20 meconium samples. The proposed analytical procedure yields information on cumulative in utero exposure to selected EDCs.

Ore mineralizations in bedrock and their exploitation may have a negative impact on air quality of surrounding urban areas and, subsequently, on human health. This study uses lichens as bioindicators of atmospheric pollution to evaluate the spatial distribution of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) in the towns close to the massive sulfide deposits of the Iberian Pyrite Belt (IPB) in SW Spain. Altogether 89 native lichen samples of Xanthoria parietina were collected from the mining towns, control towns out of the reach of the mining activity, as well as from distal sampling sites. The samples were analyzed for 29 elements after acid digestion. The concentrations for Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Rb, Mo, Cd, Sn, Sb, Cs, Ba, W, Tl, Pb, S, and Fe are significantly higher in the mining towns in comparison to the control towns. The ore mineral-associated PTEs, including Cu, Zn, As, Ba, and Pb, exhibit extreme concentrations in the urban areas close to the mining activity, and particularly in the small settlement of La Dehesa next to the mineral processing plant and the tailings pond. The distal samples confirm the decrease in the concentrations of all PTEs, and these samples present similar values as in the control areas. The results, point at increased bioaccumulation of PTEs in the lichen thalli of the adjacent urban areas, suggesting that the air quality of the adjacent urban areas is locally impacted by the massive polymetallic sulfide deposits which is enhanced by the mining activity. Therefore, monitoring the urban air quality is recommended.

BACKGROUND: Perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are environmental contaminants present in a wide range of consumer products and frequently detected in drinking water. They have been linked to adverse reproductive health outcomes in women, but there is limited human evidence on the association of PFAS exposure with endometriosis. OBJECTIVE/AIM: To explore the association between plasma concentrations of several PFAS, considered individually and as a mixture, and the risk of endometriosis in women of childbearing age. METHODS: Between 2018 and 2020, 42 patients with endometriosis and 90 controls undergoing abdominal surgery were recruited at two public hospitals in Granada, Spain. The presence or absence of endometriosis was ascertained by laparoscopic inspection of the pelvis and biopsy of suspected lesions (histological diagnosis). Concentrations of 10 PFAS were quantified in plasma samples from participants. Unconditional logistic regression was employed to examine associations of individual PFAS and summed concentrations of short (∑SC) and long-chain (∑LC) PFAS with odds of endometriosis, and quantile g-computation was used to assess their mixture effect. RESULTS: In models adjusted for age, schooling, and parity, perfluorotridecanoic acid (PFTrDA) was associated with higher odds of endometriosis (odds ratio [OR] = 1.74; 95 % CI = 1.11-2.73 per 2-fold increase in plasma concentrations), while marginally significant associations were found for perfluorohexane sulfonate (PFHxS) (OR = 1.45, 95 % CI = 0.94-2.21) and ∑SC PFAS (OR = 1.48; 95 % CI = 0.96-2.30). No associations were found for the remaining PFAS. The PFAS mixture was non-significantly associated with 1.7-fold higher odds of endometriosis (95 % CI = 0.73-3.80), with perfluorononanoic acid (PFNA), PFHxS, and PFTrDA being the major contributors to this effect. CONCLUSIONS: These findings suggest that exposure to certain PFAS may increase the odds of endometriosis. However, given the modest sample size, further studies are warranted to verify these results.

Remediation strategies for metal(loid)-polluted soils vary among the wide range of approaches, including physical, chemical, and biological remediation, or combinations of these. In this study, we assessed the effectiveness of a set of soil remediation treatments based on the combined application of inorganic (marble sludge) and organic amendments (vermicompost, and dry olive residue [DOR] biotransformed by the saprobic fungi Coriolopsis rigida and Coprinellus radians) and inoculation with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMFs) (Rhizophagus irregularis and Rhizoglomus custos). The treatments were applied under greenhouse conditions to soil residually polluted by potentially toxic elements (PTEs) (Pb, As, Zn, Cu, Cd, and Sb), and wheat was grown in the amended soils to test the effectiveness of the treatments in reducing soil toxicity and improving soil conditions and plant performance. Therefore, we evaluated the influence of the treatments on the main soil properties and microbial activities, as well as on PTE availability and bioaccumulation in wheat plants. Overall, the results showed a positive influence of all treatments on the main soil properties. Treatments consisting of a combination of marble and organic amendments, especially biotransformed DOR amendments, showed the greatest effectiveness in improving the soil biological status, promoting plant growth and survival, and reducing PTE availability and plant uptake. Furthermore, AMF inoculation further enhanced the efficacy of DOR amendments by promoting the immobilization of PTEs in soil and stimulating the phytostabilization mechanisms induced by AMFs, thus playing an important bioprotective role in plants. Therefore, our results highlight that biotransformed DOR may represent an efficient product for use as a soil organic amendment when remediating metal(loid)-polluted soils, and that its application in combination with AMFs may represent a promising sustainable bioremediation strategy for recovering soil functions and reducing toxicity in polluted areas.

Background: Currently, there may be 240-250 million people worldwide affected by food allergies. Dining out can be challenging for individuals with food allergies who rely on restaurant and food service staff to properly prepare allergen-free meals. For this reason, the personnel working in restaurants and other food services play a significant role in managing the risks faced by customers with food allergies. Objectives: A systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted to assess the existing evidence concerning the knowledge, attitudes, and practices related to food allergies among restaurant and foodservice personnel. Methods: To identify, characterize, and synthesize published research on the prevalence of positive responses regarding knowledge, attitudes, and practices related to food allergies among restaurant and food service personnel, international recommendations for systematic reviews and PRISMA guidelines were followed. The search was conducted between January 2012 and January 2022, utilizing the electronic databases PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, and the Cochrane Library. Selection and data extraction were carried out following predefined protocols, and constructs based on reported outcomes were generated and subsequently analyzed in the meta-analysis. Trials were evaluated using the Cochrane tool for risk of bias. The results are presented using summary tables, forest plots, and box plots, showcasing the combined proportion of constructs obtained from independent surveys conducted without control groups. These constructs were then grouped into categories as an organizational framework and analyzed to determine their distribution among quintiles, aiming to provide a detailed overview of data variability. This strategy allowed us to demonstrate how results from the analyzed categories were distributed. Results: The algorithm identified 23 relevant studies, primarily originating from the United States and Europe. The main observed variability was related to the evaluated populations and the instruments used. A total of 28 constructs were identified, with 10 related to knowledge, 9 to attitudes, and 9 to practices. A proportion meta-analysis was conducted to determine the prevalence of positive responses within these three study categories. The results obtained reveal that, in the knowledge category, quintiles 4 and 5 exhibit strong knowledge on the subject (over 84 %). In contrast, starting from quintile 2, the majority of participants shows a positive attitude toward catering to consumers with food allergies (over 85 %). However, after examining the practices category, responses belonging to quintile 5 reflect a low level of risk, while in the other quintiles, behaviors with a higher potential risk for consumers with food allergies are identified. Conclusions: The knowledge, attitudes, and practices of personnel in the food service sector are crucial due to the increasing prevalence of food allergies today, as well as the growing frequency of eating out. Knowledge is the most extensively studied category, showing generally acceptable but still insufficient levels in some areas. Positive attitudes are expressed towards individuals disclosing allergic conditions, yet they do not necessarily correlate with high levels of knowledge. The identified practices do not ensure the safety of the dish served to the customer. There is limited awareness regarding the importance of preventing acute allergic reactions at the time of food consumption. Restaurants and food services should train all staff involved in customer service, implement protocols aimed at preventing allergic reactions during food service, and establish guidelines for handling a customer experiencing an acute reaction.The limitations of this research are related to the heterogeneity present in the synthesized results, urging caution when interpreting the overall estimate of the combined effect, as the findings may not be applicable to all populations or study settings. Indeed, more studies are needed to enhance result precision and provide more specific recommendations for catering to allergic customers in restaurants and food services.

BACKGROUND: Endometrial cancer is a hormone-dependent cancer, and estrogens play a relevant role in its etiology. However, little is known about the effects of environmental pollutants that act as xenoestrogens or that influence estrogenic activity through different pathways. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to assess the relationship between the combined estrogenic activity of mixtures of xenoestrogens present in serum samples and the risk of endometrial cancer in the Screenwide case-control study. METHODS: The total effective xenoestrogen burden (TEXB) attributable to organohalogenated compounds (TEXB-α) and to endogenous hormones and more polar xenoestrogens (TEXB-ß) was assessed in serum from 156 patients with endometrial cancer (cases) and 150 controls by combining chemical extraction and separation by high-performance liquid chromatography with the E-SCREEN bioassay for estrogenicity. RESULTS: Median TEXB-α and TEXB-ß levels for cases (0.30 and 1.25 Eeq pM/mL, respectively) and controls (0.42 and 1.28 Eeq pM/mL, respectively) did not significantly differ (p=0.653 and 0.933, respectively). An inverted-U risk trend across serum TEXB-α and TEXB-ß levels was observed in multivariate adjusted models: Positive associations were observed for the second category of exposure in comparison to the lowest category of exposure [odds ratio (OR)=2.11 (95% CI: 1.13, 3.94) for TEXB-α, and OR=3.32 (95% CI: 1.62, 6.81) for TEXB-ß], whereas no significant associations were observed between the third category of exposure and the first [OR=1.22 (95% CI: 0.64, 2.31) for TEXB-α, and OR=1.58 (95% CI: 0.75, 3.33) for TEXB-ß]. In mutually adjusted models for TEXB-α and TEXB-ß levels, the association of TEXB-α with endometrial cancer risk was attenuated [OR=1.45 (95% CI: 0.61, 3.47) for the second category of exposure], as well as estimates for TEXB-ß (OR=2.68; 95% CI: 1.03, 6.99). Most of the individual halogenated contaminants showed no associations with both TEXB and endometrial cancer. CONCLUSIONS: We evaluated serum total xenoestrogen burden in relation to endometrial cancer risk and found an inverted-U risk trend across increasing categories of exposure. The use of in vitro bioassays with human samples may lead to a paradigm shift in the way we understand the negative impact of chemical mixtures on human health effects.
