RESUMO

Copper and dysprosium doped NiFe2O4 magnetic nanomaterials, Ni1-xCuxDyyFe2-yO4 (x = y = 0.00, 0.01, 0.02, 0.03), was prepared by utilizing sol-gel auto-combustion approach to inspect the photodegradation of methylene blue (MB) pollutant and also, to perform the electrocatalytic water splitting and antibacterial studies. The XRD analysis reveal the growth of a single-phase spinel cubic structure for produced nanomaterials. The magnetic traits show an increasing trend in saturation magnetization (Ms) from 40.71 to 47.90 emu/g along with a decreasing behaviour of coercivity from 158.09 to 156.34 Oe at lower and higher Cu and Dy doping content (x = 0.0-0.01). The study of optical band gap values of copper and dysprosium-doped nickel nanomaterials decreased from 1.71 to 1.52 eV. This will increase the photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue pollutant from 88.57% to 93.67% under natural sunlight, respectively. These findings clearly show that under natural sunlight irradiation for 60 min, the produced N4 photocatalyst displays the greatest photocatalytic activity with a maximum removal percentage of 93.67%. The electrocatalytic characteristics of produced magnetic nanomaterials for both HER and OER were examined with a Calomel electrode taking as a reference in a 0.5 N H2SO4 and 0.1 N KOH electrolyte. The N4 electrode demonstrated considerable 10 and 0.024 mA/cm2 of current density, with onset potentials of 0.99 and 1.5 V for HER and OER and also, have tafel slopes of 58.04 and 295 mV/dec, respectively. The antibacterial activity for produced magnetic nanomaterials was examined against various bacteria (Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus, S. typhi, and P. aeruginosa) in which N3 sample produced significant inhibition zone against gram-positive bacteria (Bacillus subtilis and Staphylococcus aureus) but no zone of inhibition against gram-negative bacteria (S. typhi and P. aeruginosa). With all these superior traits, the produced magnetic nanomaterials are highly valuable for the wastewater remediation, hydrogen evolution, and biological applications.

RESUMO

Background: There is limited literature from India on effect of fathers' deployment on the mental health of children. This cross-sectional analytical study investigates the difference in anxiety levels of children whose fathers are deployed in a field location and compares it with children currently located with their fathers. Method: Data were collected in an army school from 200 children aged 10-17 years with fathers deployed in field locations (n = 99) and fathers currently residing with the children (n = 105) via interviewer administered and self-completed Screen for Child Anxiety-Related Disorders (SCARED) questionnaire. Results: Anxiety scores were on an average, minimally raised above the cut-off level for children who had fathers deployed. In addition, panic disorder scores were also above the cut-off levels for these children. While scores were normal in all other domain, they were higher than that for children residing with their fathers, although the difference was not significant. Girls with fathers deployed had scores higher than cut-off scores for domains such as panic, separation anxiety and school avoidance, while boys had scores higher than cut-off scores only for panic disorders. However, the girls had significantly higher scores than boys in all domains. Girls in both groups (with and without father deployed) had higher scores than cut-off scores for panic disorders. Conclusion: Anxiety levels in children were not found to be unduly affected by the deployment of fathers. But girls were found to have clinically relevant panic disorder, school avoidance and separation anxiety scores as compared with boys in the similar situation of parental separation.

RESUMO

Background: Study of first episode psychosis (FEP), an episode of psychotic nature, which manifests for the first time in an individual in the longitudinal continuum of his/her illness, has been a matter of research interest in recent years, as this may give more insight to the overall phenomenology and course of psychotic illnesses. Methods: A study was undertaken to evaluate course and outcome of first episode psychosis. A total of 100 consecutive inpatients were selected for the study. Informed consent was obtained. Structured Proforma was used for recording psychosocial profiles and relevant medical history. Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale (BPRS) was given to assess the severity of psychopathology; Positive and Negative Symptom Scale (PANSS) to assess the severity of psychosis; Becks Suicidal Ideation Scale (BSI) to assess the extent of suicidality and Global Assessment of Functioning (GAF) to assess global functioning of the individual. The assessment was done at baseline, at six months, and at one year. Results: First episode psychosis constituted around a tenth of the caseload. It commonly affected people in the third decade of life. There was an improvement in 92% of the cases over a year of study. Schizophrenia constituted the majority of first episode psychosis. The history of smoking was relatively higher in acute and transient psychotic disorders. Age inversely correlated with the severity of psychopathology. There was no difference in improvement in psychopathology over time in patients of schizophrenia and related disorder vis--vis other psychotic disorders. Conclusion: Our study did not find any significantly varied sociodemographic factors in the course and outcome of the illness. It also refuted the schism between various types of psychosis based on the current classificatory system. It draws our attention toward the unitary concept of psychosis and is a call to re-think our strategies in the management of psychosis.

RESUMO

Titania (TiO2) based photocatalysts have shown tremendous potential in tackling important issues related to energy, the environment, and water purification. The tunable morphologies of the TiO2 based multicomponent composites are promising for the improvement of photocatalytic characteristics for practical applications. In this work, we report a one-step facile approach to achieve hollow silica/titania microspheres through the process of reactive assembly at the immiscible interface of micrometer-sized droplets. Scanning electron microscopy and small-angle neutron scattering revealed the hierarchal structure of the microspheres. Elemental mapping of the composite microspheres provided direct evidence of the incorporation of silica nanoparticles into the microspheres. The diffusion of reactant molecules and hydrolysis/condensation reactions across the phase boundary of the interface of two immiscible liquids controls the morphology of the microspheres and the size of TiO2 nanoparticles. The silica/titania composite microspheres show excellent thermal stability against the anatase to rutile phase transition caused by inhibition of the growth of TiO2 nanoparticles due to proximity of the silica nanoparticles. The photoelectrochemical measurements show that TiO2-SiO2 microspheres exhibit superior photocatalytic characteristics compared to the TiO2 microspheres. The kinetics of dye degradation for TiO2-SiO2 microspheres is found to be significantly faster compared to TiO2 microspheres which confirms the superior photocatalytic properties of the composite microspheres.

RESUMO

Polymer-mediated interactions such as DNA-protein binding, protein aggregation, and filler reinforcement in polymers play crucial roles in many important biological and industrial processes. In this work, we report a detailed investigation of interactions between nanoparticles in the presence of high volume fractions of an adsorbing polymer. Small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) revealed the existence of a stable gel-like structure in the polymer-nanoparticle dispersion, whereby anchored polymer molecules on nanoparticles acted as bridging centres, while basic interactions between nanoparticles remained repulsive. Time-resolved SAXS measurements showed that the local volume fraction of nanoparticles increased during the drying of the dispersion owing to the shrinkage of the gel-like structure. Further, nanoparticle clusters in the dehydrated composite films showed percolated networks of nanoparticles, except for 5% loading that showed a phase-separated morphology as the volume fraction of nanoparticles remained lower than the percolation threshold. A significant restructuring of nanoparticle clusters occurred upon the hydration of nanocomposite films caused by the expansion of polymer networks induced by hydration forces. Temporal evolution of the volume fraction of nanoparticles during dehydration unveiled three distinct stages similar to the logistic growth function and this was attributed to the evaporation of free, intermediate, and bound water in the different stages. A plausible mechanism was elucidated based on the spring action analogy between anchored polymer chains and nanoparticles during hydration and dehydration processes.

RESUMO

Here reported is the layer-by-layer-based advanced manufacturing that yields a simple, novel, and cost-effective technique for generating selective nanoparticle deposition and orientation in the form of well-controlled patterns. The surface roughness of the three-dimensionally printed patterns and the solid-liquid-air contact line, as well as the nanoparticle interactions in dipped suspensions, determine the carbon nanofiber (CNF) alignment, while the presence of triangular grooves supports the pinning of the meniscus, resulting in a configuration consisting of alternating CNF and polymer channels. The polymer/nanoparticle composites show 10 times lower resistance along with the particle alignment direction than the randomly distributed CNF networks and 6 orders of magnitude lower than that along the transverse direction. The unidirectional alignment of the CNF also demonstrates linear piezoresistivity behavior under small strain deformation along with high sensitivity and selectivity toward volatile organic compounds. The reported advanced manufacturing shows broad applications in microelectronics, energy transport, light composites, and multifunctional sensors.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Lecture based large classroom teaching is limited in scope of learning by being primarily. Teacher focussed, directive and monotonous with students often being passive participants. In psychiatry, problem is further compounded because of stigma around the subject and lack of summative assessment. Narratives and poems have been used in education to facilitate teaching. METHODS: 50 randomly selected medical undergraduate students were subjected to short poetic narrative video facilitated large classroom interactive lecture, while 50 other students were imparted traditional classroom lecture. Acceptability and effectiveness of this teaching learning modality was done with a questionnaire and multiple-choice questions on the given topic post the lecture. RESULT: Around 90 percent of the student found the modified classroom teaching to be acceptable. It was equally effective as traditional classroom teaching. Student and faculty reflected on the whole experience as innovative, immersive and appealing to empathy. CONCLUSION: Poetic narrative facilitated classroom teaching is an acceptable and equally effective modality of large classroom teaching.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Pumilio RNA-binding proteins are evolutionarily conserved throughout eukaryotes and are involved in RNA decay, transport, and translation repression in the cytoplasm. Although a majority of Pumilio proteins function in the cytoplasm, two nucleolar forms have been reported to have a function in rRNA processing in Arabidopsis. The species of the genus Chara have been known to be most closely related to land plants, as they share several characteristics with modern Embryophyta. RESULTS: In this study, we identified two putative nucleolar Pumilio protein genes, namely, ChPUM2 and ChPUM3, from the transcriptome of Chara corallina. Of the two ChPUM proteins, ChPUM2 was most similar in amino acid sequence (27% identity and 45% homology) and predicted protein structure to Arabidopsis APUM23, while ChPUM3 was similar to APUM24 (35% identity and 54% homology). The transient expression of 35S:ChPUM2-RFP and 35S:ChPUM3-RFP showed nucleolar localization of fusion proteins in tobacco leaf cells, similar to the expression of 35S:APUM23-GFP and 35S:APUM24-GFP. Moreover, 35S:ChPUM2 complemented the morphological defects of the apum23 phenotypes but not those of apum24, while 35S:ChPUM3 could not complement the apum23 and apum24 mutants. Similarly, the 35S:ChPUM2/apum23 plants rescued the pre-rRNA processing defect of apum23, but 35S:ChPUM3/apum24+/- plants did not rescue that of apum24. Consistent with these complementation results, a known target RNA-binding sequence at the end of the 18S rRNA (5'-GGAAUUGACGG) for APUM23 was conserved in Arabidopsis and C. corallina, whereas a target region of ITS2 pre-rRNA for APUM24 was 156 nt longer in C. corallina than in A. thaliana. Moreover, ChPUM2 and APUM23 were predicted to have nearly identical structures, but ChPUM3 and APUM24 have different structures in the 5th C-terminal Puf RNA-binding domain, which had a longer random coil in ChPUM3 than in APUM24. CONCLUSIONS: ChPUM2 of C. corallina was functional in Arabidopsis, similar to APUM23, but ChPUM3 did not substitute for APUM24 in Arabidopsis. Protein homology modeling showed high coverage between APUM23 and ChPUM2, but displayed structural differences between APUM24 and ChPUM3. Together with the protein structure of ChPUM3 itself, a short ITS2 of Arabidopsis pre-rRNA may interrupt the binding of ChPUM3 to 3'-extended 5.8S pre-rRNA.

RESUMO

Energy enthusiasts in developed countries explore sustainable and efficient pathways for accomplishing zero carbon footprint through the H2 economy. The major objective of the H2 economy review series is to bring out the status, major issues, and opportunities associated with the key components such as H2 production, storage, transportation, distribution, and applications in various energy sectors. Specifically, Part I discussed H2 production methods including the futuristic ones such as photoelectrochemical for small, medium, and large-scale applications, while Part II dealt with the challenges and developments in H2 storage, transportation, and distribution with national and international initiatives. Part III of the H2 economy review discusses the developments and challenges in the areas of H2 application in chemical/metallurgical industries, combustion, and fuel cells. Currently, the majority of H2 is being utilized by a few chemical industries with >60% in the oil refineries sector, by producing grey H2 by steam methane reforming on a large scale. In addition, the review also presents the challenges in various technologies for establishing greener and sustainable H2 society.

RESUMO

Photoelectrochemical performance of bismuth vanadate (BiVO4) photoanode is limited by poor charge separation and transport properties. The roles of carbon nanotube, reduced graphene oxide, or graphitic carbon nitride in BiVO4 composite photoanode were investigated toward enhancing light absorption and reducing overall impedance during photoelectrochemical water oxidation process. X-ray diffraction and Tauc analysis showed that BiVO4 retains its monoclinic phase, n-type semiconductor nature, and band gap in all carbon nanomaterials-incorporated composite photoanodes. It was observed that the carbon nanomaterials incorporation in BiVO4 film increases its surface porosity, ultimately leading to enhanced light absorption. The BiVO4 photoanode with reduced graphene oxide and graphitic carbon nitride showed same bulk charge separation efficiency, whereas the latter showed better charge transfer. It was found that the graphitic carbon nitride formed composite with BiVO4 to provide enhanced light absorption efficiency, i.e., 89% in 350-505 nm range. The BiVO4 with graphitic carbon nitride photoanode showed the best performance with a photocurrent of 2.2 mA cm-2, charge separation efficiency of 67%, and photocurrent of 4.0 mA cm-2 with cobalt-phosphate surface catalyst at 1.23 VRHE for water oxidation under 1 sun illumination. The Mott-Schottky and impedance measurements confirmed the shift of conduction band position toward hydrogen reduction potential and reduction in film resistance, respectively, with carbon nanomaterials addition, and the shift was most significant for graphitic carbon nitride. It is concluded that by concomitant formation of junction during photoanode fabrication between carbon nanomaterials, BiVO4, and fluorine-doped tin oxide glass substrate, better charge separation, transport, and light absorption can be achieved.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES: Hospital-acquired infections (HAIs) are a major challenge to patient safety and have serious public health implications by changing the quality of life of patients and sometimes causing disability or even death. The true burden of HAI remains unknown, particularly in developing countries. The objective of this study was to estimate point prevalence of HAI and study the associated risk factors in a tertiary care hospital in Pune, India. METHODS: A series of four cross-sectional point prevalence surveys were carried out between March and August 2014. Data of each patient admitted were collected using a structured data entry form. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines were used to identify and diagnose patients with HAI. RESULTS: Overall prevalence of HAI was 3.76 per cent. Surgical Intensive Care Unit (ICU) (25%), medical ICU (20%), burns ward (20%) and paediatric ward (12.17%) were identified to have significant association with HAI. Prolonged hospital stay [odds ratio (OR=2.81), mechanical ventilation (OR=18.57), use of urinary catheter (OR=7.89) and exposure to central air-conditioning (OR=8.59) had higher odds of acquiring HAI (P<0.05). INTERPRETATION & CONCLUSIONS: HAI prevalence showed a progressive reduction over successive rounds of survey. Conscious effort needs to be taken by all concerned to reduce the duration of hospital stay. Use of medical devices should be minimized and used judiciously. Healthcare infection control should be a priority of every healthcare provider. Such surveys should be done in different healthcare settings to plan a response to reducing HAI.

RESUMO

The expanded uses of zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) have grown rapidly in the field of nanotechnology. Thus, rising production of nanoparticles (NPs) increases the possible risks to the environment and occupationally exposed humans. Hence, it is indispensable to appraise the safety toxicity including genotoxicity for these NPs. In the present study, we have evaluated the genotoxic effect of ZnO NPs after oral administration to Swiss mice at dose levels of 300 and 2000 mg/kg body weight. These doses were administered for 2 days at 24 h apart. Chromosomal aberration (CA) and micronucleus tests were conducted following Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development guidelines. DNA damage was evaluated at 0, 24, 48, and 72 h posttreatment using a randomly amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) assay; additionally, semen analyses were also performed at 34.5 days post oral exposure. The reactive oxygen species (ROS), 8-oxo-2'-deoxyguanosine and CAs were increased ( p < 0.05) at the highest dosage (2000 mg/kg) of ZnO NPs compared to controls. Aberrant sperm morphology with reduced sperm count and motility were also present ( p < 0.05) in the high-dose group. Based on the RAPD assay, the genomic template stability within the high-dose group (<90%) was less than the controls (100%). The results suggested that ZnO NPs are mildly genotoxic in a dose-related manner and this toxicity were induced by generation of ROS.

RESUMO

The aim of the present study was to study the effect of lime concentration, frying temperature and frying time on quality characteristics of barley chips. Effect of salt concentration and packaging material on the quality and stability of the product was also studied during 180 days of storage under ambient conditions. An increase in fat content of chips was observed with the increase in lime concentration, frying temperature and time, whereas a decreasing trend was observed in moisture content of chips. An increase in amylose content of chips was observed during frying. However, it was found that the amylopectin in chips decreased during frying as frying temperature and time was increased. An increase in colour difference (ΔE) and crispness was noted in chips during frying as frying temperature and time increased. With the increase in lime concentration (0.5 and 1.0 %) both ΔE and break force of chips was found decreased. The results further revealed that there was gradual decrease in fat (%) and amylopectin (%) during storage, whereas moisture (%) and amylose (%) increased during storage period. Organoleptic evaluation of the product revealed that scores of colour, texture, flavour and over all acceptability decrease during storage. However the treatment (salt 2 % and aluminium based laminate) recorded better score with respect to colour, flavour, texture and overall acceptability.

RESUMO

Picrorhiza (Picrorhiza kurrooa Royle ex Benth.) an important medicinal herb of western Himalayan region has been used to treat various diseases and disorders. Over-harvesting and lack of cultivation has led to its entry in Red Data Book as an endangered species. Further, its very restrictive habitat and lesser biomass production are major limitations for bringing it under commercial cultivation. All these issues necessitate deeper insights into mechanisms governing its growth and interaction with the environmental cues. Light may be one of the important factors to be studied for its role in regulating growth and adaptation of Picrorhiza as in natural habitat it prefers shady niches. Keeping this in view, proteome of Picrorhiza kept under light vis-à-vis under dark was analysed and compared. Leaf as well as root proteome of Picrorhiza was studied. Denaturing two dimensional gel electrophoresis and mass spectrometry techniques were used to detect and identify differentially expressed proteins, respectively. Twenty two proteins from leaf and 25 proteins from root showed differential expression levels under dark and light conditions. Among the differentially expressed proteins, majority were those involved in metabolism, protein synthesis, and stress and defense response. Other differentially expressed proteins were those involved in photosynthetic process, photorespiration and few proteins were with unknown function indicating that many different processes work together to establish a new cellular homeostasis in response to dark and light conditions. Proteins found to be differentially expressed under light vis-à-vis dark conditions suggested a range of biochemical pathways and processes being associated with response of plant to dark conditions. The identified proteins may be utilized for developing strategies for improving the biomass production/performance of Picrorhiza under varied light/dark habitats.

RESUMO

Background: Depressive disorders are one of the most common psychiatric disorders that occur in people of all ages. Aim: To assess the efficacy of cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) and interpersonal therapy (IPT) in cases of depression. Materials and Methods: The sample for the study comprised 52 diagnosed cases of major depressive disorder (MDD) based on the 10th revision of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10) criteria in the age range of 21 to 50 years. They were randomized with the help of the app and assigned to CBT and IPT groups. Two patients had dropped out of the CBT group. Hence, finally, 50 cases were taken for study. A total of 12 therapy sessions were given. All patients were given standard treatment as prescribed. Results: Findings of paired samples t-test to assess the within-group differences in both the groups (CBT and IPT) as well as gains score statistics or difference score statistics (pre-test minus post-test) were applied to compare group differences. Results of paired samples 't' test suggest that there was a statistically significant difference in the scores of both the groups from pre-test to post-test. IPT group had shown significantly better outcomes as quantified by the percentage of patients scoring less on the outcome variable of the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), Montgomery-Asberg Depression Rating Scale (MADRS), Hopelessness Scale, and General Health Questionnaire (GHQ). Conclusion: Both CBT and IPT are efficacious in the treatment of MDD. IPT yielded better results on MADRS as compared to CBT on parameters of outcome in the present study. The findings indicate that interventions were effective in reducing the symptoms of depression.

RESUMO

Aliovalent doping in ceria and defect engineering are important aspects in tuning the properties of ceria for advanced technological applications, especially in the emerging field of electrocatalytic water-splitting for harvesting renewable energy. However, the ambiguity regarding the choice of dopants/co-dopants and ways to deal with the size difference between dopants and lattice hosts remains a long-standing problem. In this study, ceria was aliovalently codoped with Sc3+ and La3+ while keeping the total concentration of dopants constant; the ionic radius of the former is smaller and that of the latter is larger than Ce4+. Variations in the relative amounts of these dopants helped to modulate the effective ionic radii and match that of the host. A systematic study on the role of these aliovalent dopants in defect evolution in ceria and in modulating the Ce3+ fraction using powder XRD, Rietveld refinement, positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Eu3+ photoluminescence, and Raman spectroscopy is presented here. The evolved defects and their dependence on subtle factors other than charge compensation are further correlated with their electrocatalytic activity towards oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in alkaline medium. The catalyst with an optimum defect density, maximum Ce3+ fraction at the surface and the least effective ionic radius difference between the dopants and the host demonstrated the best performance towards the OER. This study demonstrates how effective ionic radius modulation in defect-engineered ceria through a judicious choice of codopants can enhance the catalytic property of ceria and provides immensely helpful information for designing ceria-based heterogeneous catalysts with desired functionalities.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Adolescence is a period when the individual is vulnerable and exposure to sexually implicit/explicit programs on television and internet can influence their sexual behaviour and make them more permissive towards premarital sex, which is known to influence their academic performance. This can be modified by parental discussion on these matters with their children. There have been only few studies from India that have explored such issues therefore this study aimed to explore the impact of television, internet and parental discussion on sexual activity and academic performance. METHODS: This study was conducted in two co-education schools using a self reporting questionnaire administered to students of class IX-XII. This study evaluated the relation of academic performance, exposure to media such as television & internet to sexual activity & academic performance of the students and the role of parental discussion on these. RESULTS: The study sample size was 586. There is no significant association between the number of hours of watching television per day and academic performance as measured by marks in examinations. Significant positive association was found among boys between sexual contact and average score in academics & unsupervised use of internet. In both genders a significant positive association was found between those watching English serials, movies and increased chances of indulging in sexual activity while a negative relation with those watching Cartoons. There is no significant difference in occurrence of sexual contact in those who discussed sexual matters with parents and those who did not. CONCLUSION: This being first of it's kind of study from India and a cross sectional study, further prospective and detailed studies are warranted to delineate the interaction of media, parental discussion, academic performance and sexual activity.

RESUMO

Background: Asymptomatic and mild form of the neurocognitive disorder in individuals with human immunodeficiency virus infection is still prevalent and a chief problem worldwide although the severity of the neurocognitive complications is decreasing after the introduction of combined highly active antiretroviral therapy. Aim: To study language and executive dysfunction of HIV patients in Clinical Stage 1 in an industrial scenario in Western Maharashtra as compared to healthy controls. Material and Methods: The Wisconsin card sorting test and Addenbrooke cognitive scale were done to check for executive function and language, respectively, and compared to age- and gender-matched HIV-negative controls. Results: Both the results of the WCST and Addenbrooke cognitive scale showed a decline in scores in the cases as compared to the controls overall. The distribution of cases as per the gender showed no significant difference, whereas there was a significant difference as per the age. Conclusion: In asymptomatic HIV patients, there is a decline in executive function and language as compared to the healthy controls. As most of the individuals were employed, there is a need to assess their neurocognitive function regularly as the progress of the illness can be monitored and cognitive training can be advised in these HIV-positive patients, which will not only benefit the individuals but the industrial sector in the long run as well.
