RESUMO

Ultrashort ultraviolet (UV) pulses are pivotal for resolving ultrafast electron dynamics. However, their efficient generation is strongly impeded by material dispersion and two-photon absorption, in particular, if pulse durations around a few tens of femtoseconds or below are targeted. Here, we present a new (to our knowledge) approach to ultrashort UV pulse generation: using the fourth-harmonic generation output of a commercial ytterbium laser system delivering 220 fs UV pulses, we implement a multi-pass cell (MPC) providing 5.6 µJ pulses at 256 nm, compressed to 30.5 fs. Our results set a short-wavelength record for MPC post-compression while offering attractive options to navigate the trade-off between upconversion efficiency and acceptance bandwidth for UV pulse production.

RESUMO

The control of low-energy electrons by carrier-envelope-phase-stable near-single-cycle THz pulses is demonstrated. A femtosecond laser pulse is used to create a temporally localized wave packet through multiphoton absorption at a well defined phase of a synchronized THz field. By recording the photoelectron momentum distributions as a function of the time delay, we observe signatures of various regimes of dynamics, ranging from recollision-free acceleration to coherent electron-ion scattering induced by the THz field. The measurements are confirmed by three-dimensional time-dependent Schrödinger equation simulations. A classical trajectory model allows us to identify scattering phenomena analogous to strong-field photoelectron holography and high-order above-threshold ionization.

RESUMO

The dream of physico-chemists to control molecular reactions with light beyond electronic excitations pushes the development of laser pulse shaping capabilities in the mid-infrared (MIR) spectral range. Here, we present a compact optical parametric amplifier platform for the generation and shaping of MIR laser pulses in the wavelength range between 8 µm and 15 µm. Opportunities for judiciously tailoring the electromagnetic waveform are investigated, demonstrating light field control with a spectral resolution of 59 GHz at a total spectral bandwidth of 5 THz. In experiments focusing on spectral amplitude manipulation these parameters result in a time window of 1.8 ps available for shaping the temporal pulse envelope and a phase modulation resolution of 100 mrad for several picosecond delays.

RESUMO

Spatially encoded measurements of transient optical transmissivity became a standard tool for temporal diagnostics of free-electron-laser (FEL) pulses, as well as for the arrival time measurements in X-ray pump and optical probe experiments. The modern experimental techniques can measure changes in optical coefficients with a temporal resolution better than 10 fs. This, in an ideal case, would imply a similar resolution for the temporal pulse properties and the arrival time jitter between the FEL and optical laser pulses. However, carrier transport within the material and out of its surface, as well as carrier recombination may, in addition, significantly decrease the number of carriers. This would strongly affect the transient optical properties, making the diagnostic measurement inaccurate. Below we analyze in detail the effects of those processes on the optical properties of XUV and soft X-ray irradiated Si[Formula: see text]N[Formula: see text], on sub-picosecond timescales. Si[Formula: see text]N[Formula: see text] is a wide-gap insulating material widely used for FEL pulse diagnostics. Theoretical predictions are compared with the published results of two experiments at FERMI and LCLS facilities, and with our own recent measurement. The comparison indicates that three body Auger recombination strongly affects the optical response of Si[Formula: see text]N[Formula: see text] after its collisional ionization stops. By deconvolving the contribution of Auger recombination, in future applications one could regain a high temporal resolution for the reconstruction of the FEL pulse properties measured with a Si[Formula: see text]N[Formula: see text]-based diagnostics tool.

RESUMO

Dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP) at high magnetic fields (9.2 T, 400 MHz (1)H NMR frequency) requires high microwave power sources to achieve saturation of the EPR transitions. Here we describe the first high-field liquid-state DNP results using a high-power gyrotron microwave source (20 W at 260 GHz). A DNP enhancement of -29 on water protons was obtained for an aqueous solution of Fremy's Salt; in comparison the previous highest value was -10 using a solid-state microwave power source (maximum power 45 mW). The increased enhancements are partly due to larger microwave saturation and elevated sample temperature. These experimentally observed DNP enhancements, which by far exceed the predicted values extrapolated from low-field DNP experiments, demonstrate experimentally that DNP is possible in the liquid state also at high magnetic fields.
