RESUMO

Recent advances in detection and diagnostic tools have improved understanding and identification of plant physiological and biochemical processes. Effective and safe Surface Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (SERS) can find objects quickly and accurately. Raman enhancement amplifies the signal by 1014-1015 to accurately quantify plant metabolites at the molecular level. This paper shows how to use functionalized perovskite substrates for SERS. These perovskite substrates have lots of surface area, intense Raman scattering, and high sensitivity and specificity. These properties eliminate sample matrix component interference. This study identified research gaps on perovskite substrates' effectiveness, precision, and efficiency in biological metabolite detection compared to conventional substrates. This article details the synthesis and use of functionalized perovskites for plant metabolites measurement. It analyzes their pros and cons in this context. The manuscript analyzes perovskite-based SERS substrates, including single-crystalline perovskites with enhanced optoelectronic properties. This manuscript aims to identify this study gap by comprehensively reviewing the literature and using it to investigate plant metabolite detection in future studies.

Nowadays, the food industry is facing challenges due to the simultaneous rise in global warming, population, and food consumption. As the integration of synthetic biology and food science, novel synthetic foods have obtained high attention to address these issues. However, these novel foods may cause potential risks related to human health. Four types of novel synthetic foods, including plant-based foods, cultured meat, fermented foods, and microalgae-based foods, were reviewed in the study. The original food sources, consumer acceptance, advantages and disadvantages of these foods were discussed. Furthermore, potential risk factors, such as nutritional, biological, and chemical risk factors, associated with these foods were described and analyzed. Additionally, the current detection methods (e.g., enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, biosensors, chromatography, polymerase chain reaction, isothermal amplification, and microfluidic technology) and processing technologies (e.g., microwave treatment, ohmic heating, steam explosion, high hydrostatic pressure, ultrasound, cold plasma, and supercritical carbon dioxide) were reviewed and discussed critically. Nonetheless, it is crucial to continue innovating and developing new detection and processing technologies to effectively evaluate these novel synthetic foods and ensure their safety. Finally, approaches to enhance the quality of these foods were briefly presented. It will provide insights into the development and management of novel synthetic foods for food industry.

Osmotic dehydration (OD) is an efficient preservation technology in that water is removed by immersing the food in a solution with a higher concentration of solutes. The application of OD in food processing offers more benefits than conventional drying technologies. Notably, OD can effectively remove a significant amount of water without a phase change, which reduces the energy demand associated with latent heat and high temperatures. A specific feature of OD is its ability to introduce solutes from the hypertonic solution into the food matrix, thereby influencing the attributes of the final product. This review comprehensively discusses the fundamental principles governing OD, emphasizing the role of chemical potential differences as the driving force behind the molecular diffusion occurring between the food and the osmotic solution. The kinetics of OD are described using mathematical models and the Biot number. The critical factors essential for optimizing OD efficiency are discussed, including product characteristics, osmotic solution properties, and process conditions. In addition, several promising technologies are introduced to enhance OD performance, such as coating, skin treatments, freeze-thawing, ultrasound, high hydrostatic pressure, centrifugation, and pulsed electric field. Reusing osmotic solutions to produce innovative products offers an opportunity to reduce food wastes. This review explores the prospects of valorizing food wastes from various food industries when formulating osmotic solutions for enhancing the quality and nutritional value of osmotically dehydrated foods while mitigating environmental impacts.

Mangoes (Mangifera indica) are widely prized for their abundant nutritional content and variety of beneficial bioactive compounds and are popularly utilized in various foods, pharmaceuticals, and cosmetics industries. However, it is important to note that certain proteins present in mango can trigger various allergic reactions, ranging from mild oral allergy syndrome to severe life-threatening anaphylaxis. The immunoglobulin E-mediated hypersensitivity of mango is mainly associated with three major allergenic proteins: Man i 1 (class IV chitinase), Man i 2 (pathogenesis-related-10 protein; Bet v 1-related protein), and Man i 4 (profilin). Food processing techniques can significantly affect the structure of mango allergens, reducing their potential to cause allergies. However, it is worth mentioning that complete elimination of mango allergen immunoreactivity has not been achieved. The protection of individuals sensitized to mango should be carefully managed through an avoidance diet, immediate medical care, and long-term oral immunotherapy. This review covers various aspects related to mango allergy, including prevalence, pathogenesis, symptoms, and diagnosis. Furthermore, the characterization of mango allergens and their potential cross-reactivity with other fruits, vegetables, plant pollen, and seeds were discussed. The review also highlights the effects of food processing on mango and emphasizes the available strategies for managing mango allergy.

BACKGROUND: Extensive evidence indicates that rates of psychotic disorder are elevated in more urban compared with less urban areas, but this evidence largely originates from Northern Europe. It is unclear whether the same association holds globally. This study examined the association between urban residence and rates of psychotic disorder in catchment areas in India (Kancheepuram, Tamil Nadu), Nigeria (Ibadan, Oyo), and Northern Trinidad. METHODS: Comprehensive case detection systems were developed based on extensive pilot work to identify individuals aged 18-64 with previously untreated psychotic disorders residing in each catchment area (May 2018-April/May/July 2020). Area of residence and basic demographic details were collected for eligible cases. We compared rates of psychotic disorder in the more v. less urban administrative areas within each catchment area, based on all cases detected, and repeated these analyses while restricting to recent onset cases (<2 years/<5 years). RESULTS: We found evidence of higher overall rates of psychosis in more urban areas within the Trinidadian catchment area (IRR: 3.24, 95% CI 2.68-3.91), an inverse association in the Nigerian catchment area (IRR: 0.68, 95% CI 0.51-0.91) and no association in the Indian catchment area (IRR: 1.18, 95% CI 0.93-1.52). When restricting to recent onset cases, we found a modest positive association in the Indian catchment area. CONCLUSIONS: This study suggests that urbanicity is associated with higher rates of psychotic disorder in some but not all contexts outside of Northern Europe. Future studies should test candidate mechanisms that may underlie the associations observed, such as exposure to violence.

Human beings have consumed soybean as an excellent food source for thousand years due to its rich protein, fatty acids, minerals, and fibers. However, soybeans were recognized as one of the big eight allergens resulting in allergic symptoms and even could lead to death. With the increasing demand for soybean products, the challenges caused by soybean allergy need to be solved urgently. This review detailly described the pathogenesis and clinical characteristics of soybean allergy, and also the advantages and disadvantages of four different diagnostic methods were summarized. The major soybean allergens and their structures were summarized. Three types of soybean allergy including Type I, III, and IV, which could trigger allergic reactions were reported in this review. Summary in four different diagnostic methods showed that double-blind, placebo-controlled food challenge is recognized as a gold standard for diagnosing soybean allergy. Three types of processing techniques in reducing soybean allergy were discussed, and the results concluded that some novel food processing techniques such as ultrasound, cold-plasma treatment, showed potential application in the reduction of soybean allergenicity. Further, some suggestions regarding the management and treatment of food allergies were addressed in this review.

Astaxanthin (AXT) is a natural xanthophyll with strong antioxidant, anticancer and antimicrobial activities, widely used in the food, feed, pharmaceutical and nutraceutical industries. So far, 95% of the AXT global market is produced by chemical synthesis, but growing customer preferences for natural products are currently changing the market for natural AXT, highlighting the production from microbially-based sources such as the yeast Phaffia rhodozyma. The AXT production by P. rhodozyma has been studied for a long time at a laboratory scale, but its use in industrial-scale processes is still very scarce. The optimization of growing conditions as well as an effective integration of upstream-downstream operations into P. rhodozyma-based AXT processes has not yet been fully achieved. With this critical review, we scrutinized the main approaches for producing AXT using P. rhodozyma strains, highlighting the impact of using conventional and non-conventional procedures for the extraction of AXT from yeast cells. In addition, we also pinpointed research directions, for example, the use of low-cost residues to improve the economic and environmental sustainability of the bioprocess, the use of environmentally/friendly and low-energetic integrative operations for the extraction and purification of AXT, as well as the need of further human clinical trials using yeast-based AXT.

Microorganisms such as bacteria, microalgae and fungi, are natural and rich sources of several valuable bioactive antioxidant's compounds, including carotenoids. Among the carotenoids with antioxidant properties, astaxanthin can be highlighted due to its pharmaceutical, feed, food, cosmetic and biotechnological applications. The best-known producers of astaxanthin are yeast and microalgae cells that biosynthesize this pigment intracellularly, requiring efficient and sustainable downstream procedures for its recovery. Conventional multi-step procedures usually involve the consumption of large amounts of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which are regarded as toxic and hazardous chemicals. Considering these environmental issues, this review is focused on revealing the potential of unconventional extraction procedures [viz., Supercritical Fluid Extraction (SFE), Ultrasound-Assisted Extraction (UAE), Microwave-Assisted Extraction (MAE), High-Pressure Homogenization (HPH)] combined with alternative green solvents (biosolvents, eutectic solvents and ionic liquids) for the recovery of microbial-based astaxanthin from microalgae (such as Haematococcus pluvialis) and yeast (such as Phaffia rhodozyma) cells. The principal advances in the area, process bottlenecks, solvent selection and strategies to improve the recovery of microbial astaxanthin are emphasized. The promising recovery yields using these environmentally friendly procedures in lab-scale are good indications and directions for their effective use in biotechnological processes for the production of commercial feed and food ingredients like astaxanthin.

The attractive biological properties and health benefits of natural astaxanthin (AXT), including its antioxidant and anti-carcinogenic properties, have garnered significant attention from academia and industry seeking natural alternatives to synthetic products. AXT, a red ketocarotenoid, is mainly produced by yeast, microalgae, wild or genetically engineered bacteria. Unfortunately, the large fraction of AXT available in the global market is still obtained using non-environmentally friendly petrochemical-based products. Due to the consumers concerns about synthetic AXT, the market of microbial-AXT is expected to grow exponentially in succeeding years. This review provides a detailed discussion of AXT's bioprocessing technologies and applications as a natural alternative to synthetic counterparts. Additionally, we present, for the first time, a very comprehensive segmentation of the global AXT market and suggest research directions to improve microbial production using sustainable and environmentally friendly practices. Food wastes imply significant greenhouse gas emissions, that increase the challenge of climate change and impact food security. According to FAO (2019), one of the main food wastes come from fruit and vegetables, representing 0.5 billion tons per year, of the 1.3 billion tons of total waste. The wastes obtained from fruit and vegetables have plenty of valuable components, known as bioactive compounds, with many properties that impact positively in human health. Some bioactive compounds hold antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-cancer properties and they have the capacity of modulating metabolic processes. Currently, the use of fruit and vegetable waste is studied to obtain bioactive compounds, through non-conventional techniques, also known as green extraction techniques. These extraction techniques report higher yields, reduce the use of solvents, employ less extraction time, and improve the efficiency of the process for obtaining bioactive compounds. Once extracted, these compounds can be used in the cosmetic, pharmaceutical, or food industry, the last one being focused on improving food quality.

Food allergy has caused lots of global public health issues, particularly in developed countries. Presently, gut microbiota has been widely studied on allergy, while the role of dysbiosis in food allergy remains unknown. Scientists found that changes in gut microbial compositions and functions are strongly associated with a dramatic increase in the prevalence of food allergy. Altering microbial composition is crucial in modulating food antigens' immunogenicity. Thus, the potential roles of probiotics, prebiotics, synbiotics, and postbiotics in affecting gut bacteria communities and the immune system, as innovative strategies against food allergy, begins to attract high attention of scientists. This review briefly summarized the mechanisms of food allergy and discussed the role of the gut microbiota and the use of probiotics, prebiotics, synbiotics, and postbiotics as novel therapies for the prevention and treatment of food allergy. The perspective studies on the development of novel immunotherapy in food allergy were also described. A better understanding of these mechanisms will facilitate the development of preventive and therapeutic strategies for food allergy.

Childhood maltreatment (CM) is linked to impairments in various domains of social functioning. Here, we argue that it is critical to identify factors that underlie impaired social functioning as well as processes that mediate the beneficial health effects of positive relationships in individuals exposed to CM. Key research recommendations are presented, focusing on: (1) identifying attachment-related alterations in specific inter- and intrapersonal processes (e.g., regulation of closeness and distance) that underlie problems in broader domains of social functioning (e.g., lack of perceived social support) in individuals affected by CM; (2) identifying internal (e.g., current emotional state) and external situational factors (e.g., cultural factors, presence of close others) that modulate alterations in specific social processes; and (3) identifying mechanisms that explain the positive health effects of intact social functioning. Methodological recommendations include: (1) assessing social processes through interactive and (close to) real-life assessments inside and outside the laboratory; (2) adopting an interdisciplinary, lifespan perspective to assess social processes, using multi-method assessments; (3) establishing global research collaborations to account for cultural influences on social processes and enable replications across laboratories and countries. The proposed line of research will contribute to globally develop and refine interventions that prevent CM and further positive relationships, which - likely through buffering the effects of chronic stress and corresponding allostatic load - foster resilience and improve mental and physical health, thereby reducing personal suffering and the societal and economic costs of CM and its consequences. Interventions targeting euthymia and psychological well-being are promising therapeutic concepts in this context.

Bioelectrochemical systems (BES) are considered efficient and sustainable technologies for bioenergy generation and simultaneously removal/recovery metal (loid)s from soil and wastewater. However, several current challenges of BES-based metal removal and recovery, especially concentrating target metals from complex contaminated wastewater or soil and their economic feasibility of engineering applications. This review summarized the applications of BES-based metal removal and recovery systems from wastewater and contaminated soil and evaluated their performances on electricity generation and metal removal/recovery efficiency. In addition, an in depth review of several key parameters (BES configurations, electrodes, catalysts, metal concentration, pH value, substrate categories, etc.) of BES-based metal removal and recovery was carried out to facilitate a deep understanding of their development and to suggest strategies for scaling up their specific application fields. Finally, the future intervention on multifunctional BES to improve their performances of mental removal and recovery were revealed.

Efficient cannabis biomass extraction can increase yield while reducing costs and minimizing waste. Cold ethanol extraction was evaluated to maximize yield and concentrations of cannabinoids and terpenes at different temperatures. Central composite rotatable design was used to optimize two independent factors: sample-to-solvent ratio (1:2.9 to 1:17.1) and extraction time (5.7 min-34.1 min). With response surface methodology, predicted optimal conditions at different extraction temperatures were a cannabis-to-ethanol ratio of 1:15 and a 10 min extraction time. With these conditions, yields (g 100 g dry matter-1) were 18.2, 19.7, and 18.5 for -20 °C, -40 °C and room temperature, respectively. Compared to the reference ground sample, tetrahydrocannabinolic acid changed from 17.9 (g 100 g dry matter-1) to 15, 17.5, and 18.3 with an extraction efficiency of 83.6%, 97.7%, 102.1% for -20 °C, -40 °C, and room temperature, respectively. Terpene content decreased by 54.1% and 32.2% for extraction at -20 °C and room temperature, respectively, compared to extraction at -40 °C. Principal component analysis showed that principal component 1 and principal component 2 account for 88% and 7.31% of total variance, respectively, although no significant differences in cold ethanol extraction at different temperatures were observed.

Limited studies have explored different extraction techniques that improve cannabis extraction with scale-up potential. Ultrasound-assisted and microwave-assisted extraction were evaluated to maximize the yield and concentration of cannabinoids and terpenes. A central composite rotatable design was used to optimize independent factors (sample-to-solvent ratio, extraction time, extraction temperature, and duty cycle). The optimal conditions for ultrasound- and microwave-assisted extraction were the sample-to-solvent ratios of 1:15 and 1:14.4, respectively, for 30 min at 60 °C. Ultrasound-assisted extraction yielded 14.4% and 14.2% more oil and terpenes, respectively, compared with microwave-assisted extracts. Ultrasound-assisted extraction increased cannabinoid concentration from 13.2−39.2%. Considering reference ground samples, tetrahydrocannabinolic acid increased from 17.9 (g 100 g dry matter−1) to 28.5 and 20 with extraction efficiencies of 159.2% and 111.4% for ultrasound-assisted and microwave-assisted extraction, respectively. Principal component analyses indicate that the first two principal components accounted for 96.6% of the total variance (PC1 = 93.2% and PC2 = 3.4%) for ultrasound-assisted extraction and 92.4% of the total variance (PC1 = 85.4% and PC2 = 7%) for microwave-assisted extraction. Sample-to-solvent ratios significantly (p < 0.05) influenced the secondary metabolite profiles and yields for ultrasound-assisted extracts, but not microwave-assisted extracts.

Seafood is rich in nutrients and plays a significant role in human health. However, seafood allergy is a worldwide health issue by inducing adverse reactions ranging from mild to life-threatening in seafood-allergic individuals. Seafood consists of fish and shellfish, with the major allergens such as parvalbumin and tropomyosin, respectively. In the food industry, effective processing techniques are applied to seafood allergens to lower the allergenicity of seafood products. Also, sensitive and rapid allergen-detection methods are developed to identify and assess allergenic ingredients at varying times. This review paper provides an overview of recent advances in processing techniques (thermal, nonthermal, combined [hybrid] treatments) and main allergen-detection methods for seafood products. The article starts with the seafood consumption and classification, proceeding with the prevalence and symptoms of seafood allergy, followed by a description of biochemical characteristics of the major seafood allergens. As the topic is multidisciplinary in scope, it is intended to provide information for further research essential for food security and safety.

Nowadays, the increasing prevalence of food allergy has become a public concern related to human health worldwide. Thus, it is imperative and necessary to provide some efficient methods for the management of food allergy. Some conventional processing methods (e.g., boiling and steaming) have been applied in the reduction of food immunoreactivity, while these treatments significantly destroy nutritional components present in food sources. Several studies have shown that novel processing techniques generally have better performance in retaining original characteristics of food and improving the efficiency of eliminating allergens. This review has focused on the recent advances of novel non-thermal processing techniques including high-pressure processing, ultrasound, pulsed light, cold plasma, fermentation, pulsed electric field, enzymatic hydrolysis, and the combination processing of them. Meanwhile, general information on global food allergy prevalence and food allergy pathology are also described. Hopefully, these findings regarding the modifications on the food allergens through various novel food processing techniques can provide an in-depth understanding in the mechanism of food allergy, which in turn possibly provides a strategy to adapt in the reduction of food immunoreactivity for the food industries.

CONTEXT: Regional variation in prevalence of genetic mutations in growth hormone deficiency (GHD) is known. AIM: Study phenotype and prevalence of mutations in GH1, GHRHR, POU1F1, PROP1 genes in GHD cohort. METHODS: One hundred and two patients {Isolated GHD (IGHD): 79; combined pituitary hormone deficiency (CPHD): 23} with orthotopic posterior pituitary were included. Auxologic, hormonal and radiological details were studied. All four genes were analysed in IGHD patients. POU1F1 and PROP1 were studied in CPHD patients. RESULTS: Of 102, 19.6% were familial cases. Height SDS, mean (SD) was - 5.14 (1.63). Peak GH, median (range) was 0.47 ng/ml (0-6.59), 72.5% patients had anterior pituitary hypoplasia (APH). Twenty mutations (novel: 11) were found in 43.1% patients (n = 44, IGHD-36, CPHD-8). GHRHR mutations (n = 32, p.Glu72* = 24) were more common than GH1 mutations (n = 4) in IGHD cohort. POU1F1 mutations (n = 6) were more common than PROP1 mutations (n = 2) in CPHD cohort. With few exceptions, this prevalence pattern is contrary to most studies in world-literature. No patients with peak GH > 4 ng/ml had mutations, signifying it as negative predictor. While many parameters were significant on univariate analysis, only positive family history and lower median peak GH levels were significant predictors of mutations on multivariate analysis in IGHD patients. CONCLUSION: At variance with world literature, we found reverse predominance of GHRHR over GH1 mutations, POU1F1 over PROP1 mutations and predominance of GHRHR p.Glu72* mutations thus re-affirming the regional diversity in GHD genetics. We report positive and negative predictors of mutations in GHD.

BACKGROUND: Schizophrenia, a chronic severe psychiatric illness of unknown aetiology, has been shown to be associated with HLA alleles but at varied degree in different population. The present study has focussed on analysing the frequency of HLA class I and class II alleles in persons with schizophrenia from South India. METHODS: Ninety seven individuals with schizophrenia and 103 age- and gender-matched controls were typed for HLA- A, B, C, DRB1 and DQB1 loci by next-generation sequencing in Illumina MiniSeq using MIA FORA NGS FLEX HLA typing kit. RESULTS: The results showed that HLA-A*01:01:01, B*37:01:01 and C*01:02:01 were positively associated with schizophrenia while HLA-B*35:03:01 and DRB1*04:03:01 were negatively associated. Gender-specific associations revealed that DRB1*10:01:01 and DQB1*05:01:01 were positively associated while DQB1*03:02:01 was negatively associated with female subjects with schizophrenia. A*24:02:01~B*37:01:01~C*06:02:01~DRB1*10:01:01~DQB1*05:01:01 is the predominant haplotype in schizophrenia population when compared to healthy controls. Amino acid association in susceptible and protective alleles has shown that the presence of peptide in the peptide-binding groves of mature HLA-A protein (K, M, V, R and V at 44th, 67th, 150th, 156th and 158th position), HLA-B protein (D and S at 77th and 99th position) and HLA-C protein (M at 99th position) confer susceptibility to the disease, only in the absence of E (Glutamic acid) at 74th position in mature HLA-DRB1 protein. Interaction of amino acids in protective alleles namely B*35:01:01 and DRB1*04:03:01 has revealed that aspartic acid at 114th (D) position in mature HLA-B protein and glutamic acid (E) at 74th position of mature HLA-DRB1 protein have a combined effect in protecting against the disease. CONCLUSION: The study has revealed the HLA association with schizophrenia in south Indian population. The amino acid interaction with the disease needs to be confirmed in a larger population.

BACKGROUND: The Indian Ocean tsunami experience in 2004 caused a major loss of life and subsequent emotional trauma for survivors. Psychosocial needs in the aftermath of this disaster were extensive, yet the cohesion and effectiveness of response were limited due to lack of preparedness and relevant policy. The Schizophrenia Research Foundation (SCARF) was one of the organizations that quickly responded to provide psychosocial assistance to people in the tsunami affected areas and recognized a need for relevant research on disaster response. Therefore, we undertook research on the challenges, success and limitations of psychosocial interventions in alleviating post-traumatic symptomology. DISCUSSION: Both community-level workers and researchers were limited in their preparedness to carry out tasks related to response. Language barriers, cultural differences, and a gap in long-term services limited the breadth and scope of research that was able to be completed. Lack of policy, poor co-ordination of services, lack of trained researchers and limited resources were challenges that emerged during this period and various strategies were adopted to meet these challenges. CONCLUSIONS: Continued research and evaluation of data has brought crucial considerations to light, including the variance in symptomology, effective tools of measurement, and the nuanced response of survivors. Future research should take relevant factors into consideration including barriers to care. Understanding of the local language and religious beliefs are significant resources in understanding the nature of survivors' trauma response and effective means of coping. Lastly, limitations regarding time frame and scope of research should be evaluated to provide more effective, comprehensive methods in future studies.
