RESUMO

Relative efficacy of five common weeds-of the kind that are either rooted in soil or which freely float over water-was assessed in rapid, effective and sustainable treatment of sewage at pilot plant scale in the recently developed and patented SHEFROL® bioreactors. The plants were utilized in a unit of capacity 12,000 liters/day (LPD) which, after two years of use, was enlarged to handle 40,000 LPD of sewage. It was then further expanded after an year to treat 57,000 LPD. All the five weeds, of which none has previously been tested in a pilot-scale SHEFROL, were able to foster highly efficient primary treatment (in terms of suspended and total solids) and secondary treatment (in terms of BOD and COD) to levels exceeding 85% in most cases. Additionally, the weeds also helped in achieving significant tertiary treatment. At different hydraulic retention times, and at steady state, the five weeds achieved treatment of BOD, COD, suspended solids, nitrogen, phosphorous, copper, nickel, zinc, and manganese in the ranges, 80-95, 79-91, 82-95, 61-71, 51-73, 37-43, 30-38, 39-47, and 27-35%, respectively. It all occurred in a single process step and without the use of any machine or chemical. This made the system not only simple and inexpensive to install but also to maintain. Over continuous long-term operation for four years, the system was seen to be very robust as it was able to handle wide variations in the volumes and characteristics of sewage, as well as absorb shock loads without compromising the reactor performance. The sustainability of the system can be further enhanced by upgrading it to a circular biorefinery. Energy sources in the form of volatile fatty acids (VFAs) can be extracted from the weeds removed from SHEFROL and then the weeds can be converted into organic fertilizer using high-rate vermireactors recently developed by the authors.


A novel and inexpensive, yet very efficient sewage treatment system is presented.The versatility and robustness of the system has been assessed at pilot plant scale for several years.The long-term continuous studies establish the efficacy of five common weeds­not hitherto explored at pilot plant level­which can serve as the main bioagent(s) in the sewage treatment system.The system has the potential of being transformed in to a closed-loop-no-waste biorefinery.

Dietary assessments are important clinical tools used by Registered Dietitians (RDs). Current methods pose barriers to accurately assess the nutritional intake of older adults due to age-related increases in risk for cognitive decline and more complex health histories. Our qualitative study explored whether implementing Voice assistant systems (VAS) could improve current dietary recall from the perspective of 20 RDs. RDs believed the implementing VAS in dietary assessments of older adults could potentially improve patient accuracy in reporting food intake, recalling portion sizes, and increasing patient-provider efficiency during clinic visits. RDs reported that low technology literacy in older adults could be a barrier to implementation. Our study provides a better understanding of how VAS can better meet the needs of both older adults and RDs in managing and assessing dietary intake.

Energy production by using hydrogen gas as a feedstock is considered to be one of the keys to creating clean energy, with the proviso that the gas is generated in a sustainable way with no emissions. A simple, self-sustaining process generating hydrogen gas from methane using inexpensive stainless steel wire-mesh catalysts at elevated temperatures (800 °C) is reported. A theoretical analysis of the production of electricity by this process revealed peak chain energy efficiencies up to 21% (emission free) when using a percentage of the produced hydrogen (approximately 40% of purified yield) as the heat source. In addition, a practical method has been developed to purify the carbon byproduct, affording essentially pure highly graphitic spheroidal carbon for advanced materials applications.

We report a rare case of leiomyosarcoma of stomach infiltrating into the spleen and tail of pancreas, which presented at the age of 28 years of age with haematemesis and was diagnosed after exploratory laparotomy. En block excision of tail of pancreas, spleen and part of the greater curvature of stomach containing the mass was done.

It has been recently reported that for some suspensions of magnetic nanoparticles the transverse proton relaxation rate, R(2), is dependent on the time that the sample is exposed to an applied magnetic field. This time dependence has been linked to the formation of linear aggregates or chains in an applied magnetic field via numerical modeling. It is widely known that chain formation occurs in more concentrated ferrofluids systems and that this has an affect on the ferrofluid properties. In this work we examine the relationships between colloidal stability, the formation of these linear structures, and changes observed in the proton transverse relaxation rate of aqueous suspensions of magnetic particles. A series of iron oxide nanoparticles with varying stabilizing ligand brush lengths were synthesized. These systems were characterized with dynamic light scattering, transmission electron microscopy, dark-field optical microscopy, and proton transverse relaxation rate measurements. The dark field optical microscopy and R(2) measurements were made in similar magnetic fields over the same time scale so as to correlate the reduction of the transverse relaxivity with the formation of linear aggregates. Our results indicate that varying the ligand length has a direct effect on the colloidal arrangement of the system in a magnetic field, producing differences in the rate and size of chain formation, and hence systematic changes in transverse relaxation rates over time. With increasing ligand brush length, attractive inter-particle interactions are reduced, which results in slower aggregate formation and shorter linear aggregate length. These results have implications for the stabilization, characterization and potentially the toxicity of magnetic nanoparticle systems used in biomedical applications.

RESUMO

Isolated epididymo-orchitis is an uncommon presentation of tuberculosis. We report a case of left sided epididymo-orchitis and scrotal involvement due to tuberculosis in a young male patient. The diagnosis was suspected on clinical examination of scrotum and confirmed by FNAC of scrotal and testis. Patient improved after taking antitubercular treatment. Key words: infection, scrotum, treatment.
