Effects of neuromuscular training on muscle architecture, isometric force production, and stretch-shortening cycle function in trained young female gymnasts. J Strength Cond Res XX(X): 000-000, 2024-This study evaluated the effects of a 10-month neuromuscular training (NMT) intervention on muscle architecture, isometric force production, and stretch-shortening cycle (SSC) function. Thirty-seven girls aged 6-12 years were placed into gymnastics + NMT (gNMT; n = 15), gymnastics only (GYM; n = 10), or maturity-matched control (CON; n = 12) groups. The gNMT group followed a 10-month NMT program in addition to gymnastics training, whereas the GYM group only participated in gymnastics training. Isometric midthigh pull (IMTP) and drop jump (DJ) kinetics were measured, in addition to muscle thickness, fascicle length, and pennation angle of the gastrocnemius medialis at baseline and at 4, 7, and 10 months. A 3 × 4 (group × time) repeated-measures ANCOVA (covariate, % predicted adult height) was used to evaluate within-group changes. Significance level was set at p < 0.05. Significant interaction effects were observed in muscle thickness, absolute (PFabs) and relative peak force (PFrel) in the IMTP and various DJ variables. The gNMT group demonstrated improvements in muscle thickness, IMTP PFabs and PFrel, and DJ kinetics, most commonly evidenced from 7 months onward. The GYM group's muscle thickness also significantly improved, accompanied by improvements in some DJ kinetics. The CON group did not experience any desirable changes. Overall, NMT elicited positive changes in muscle thickness, PFabs and PFrel, and SSC function to a greater extent than gymnastics training alone or growth and maturation. As most adaptations took 7 months, longer-term NMT programs should be implemented with youth female gymnasts.

The aim of this systematic review with meta-analysis was to assess the available body of published peer-reviewed articles related on the effects of jump rope training (JRT) compared with active/passive controls on health- and sport-related physical fitness outcomes. Searches were conducted in three databases, including studies that satisfied the following criteria: i) healthy participants; ii) a JRT programprogramme; iii) active or traditional control group; iv) at least one measure related to health- and sport-related physical fitness; v) multi-arm trials. The random-effects model was used for the meta-analyses. Twenty-one moderate-high quality (i.e., PEDro scale) studies were meta-analysed, involving 1,021 participants (male, 50.4%). Eighteen studies included participants with a mean age <18 years old. The duration of the JRT interventions ranged from 6 to 40 weeks. Meta-analyses revealed improvements (i.e., p = 0.048 to <0.001; ES = 0.23-1.19; I2 = 0.0-76.9%) in resting heart rate, body mass index, fat mass, cardiorespiratory endurance, lower- and upper-body maximal strength, jumping, range of motion, and sprinting. No significant JRT effects were noted for systolic-diastolic blood pressure, waist-hip circumference, bone or lean mass, or muscle endurance. In conclusion, JRT, when compared to active and passive controls, provides a range of small-moderate benefits that span health- and sport-related physical fitness outcomes.

The global outbreak and rapid spread of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) have created an urgent need for large-scale testing of populations. There is a demand for high-throughput testing protocols that can be used for efficient and rapid testing of clinical specimens. We evaluated a pooled PCR protocol for testing nasopharyngeal (NP) swabs using known positive/negative and untested clinical samples that were assigned to pools of 5 or 10. In total, 630 samples were used in this study. Individual positive samples with cycle threshold (CT ) values as high as 33 could be consistently detected when pooled with 4 negative samples (pool of 5), and individual positive samples with CT values up to 31 could be consistently detected when pooled with 9 negative samples (pool of 10). Pooling of up to 5 samples can be employed in laboratories for the diagnosis of COVID-19 for efficient utilization of resources, rapid screening of a greater number of people, and faster reporting of test results.

This systematic review and meta-analysis investigated the effects of leaf-plant extracts typically used for tea beverages on the level of exercise-induced muscle damage. The meta-analysis was conducted by comparing measures between the leaf-extract supplements (SUPP) and placebo (PLA) conditions at 24 h and 48 h following the muscle-damaging protocols from 19 studies with 416 participants. The results showed that the SUPP condition exhibited significantly lower indirect muscle damage markers than the PLA condition at 24- and 48-h post-exercise (p < 0.05). Furthermore, oxidative stress markers were significantly lower for the SUPP condition than the PLA condition at 24-h post-exercise (p < 0.05), although not at 48-h post-exercise (p > 0.05). In addition, no differences were found for anti-oxidant status at 24- and 48-h post-exercise (p > 0.05) between conditions. Muscle performance measures significantly increased for the SUPP condition than the PLA condition at 24-h post-exercise (p < 0.05), but not at 48-h post-exercise (p > 0.05). These results demonstrate that leaf plant extracts reduces the level of various biomarkers indicative of exercise-induced stress, although its effect on anti-oxidant status remains equivocal. Nonetheless, leaf-plant extracts typically ingested as a tea beverage may be an effective recovery strategy following strenuous exercises.

Although exaggerated host immune responses have been implicated in influenza-induced lung pathogenesis, the etiologic factors that contribute to these events are not completely understood. We previously demonstrated that neutrophil extracellular traps exacerbate pulmonary injury during influenza pneumonia. Histones are the major protein components of neutrophil extracellular traps and are known to have cytotoxic effects. Here, we examined the role of extracellular histones in lung pathogenesis during influenza. Mice infected with influenza virus displayed high accumulation of extracellular histones, with widespread pulmonary microvascular thrombosis. Occluded pulmonary blood vessels with vascular thrombi often exhibited endothelial necrosis surrounded by hemorrhagic effusions and pulmonary edema. Histones released during influenza induced cytotoxicity and showed strong binding to platelets within thrombi in infected mouse lungs. Nasal wash samples from influenza-infected patients also showed increased accumulation of extracellular histones, suggesting a possible clinical relevance of elevated histones in pulmonary injury. Although histones inhibited influenza growth in vitro, in vivo treatment with histones did not yield antiviral effects and instead exacerbated lung pathology. Blocking with antihistone antibodies caused a marked decrease in lung pathology in lethal influenza-challenged mice and improved protection when administered in combination with the antiviral agent oseltamivir. These findings support the pathogenic effects of extracellular histones in that pulmonary injury during influenza was exacerbated. Targeting histones provides a novel therapeutic approach to influenza pneumonia.

BACKGROUND: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) of bacterial pathogens is an emerging public health threat. This threat extends to pets as it also compromises our ability to treat their infections. Surveillance programs in the United States have traditionally focused on collecting data from food animals, foods, and people. The Veterinary Laboratory Investigation and Response Network (Vet-LIRN), a national network of 45 veterinary diagnostic laboratories, tested the antimicrobial susceptibility of clinically relevant bacterial isolates from animals, with companion animal species represented for the first time in a monitoring program. During 2017, we systematically collected and tested 1968 isolates. To identify genetic determinants associated with AMR and the potential genetic relatedness of animal and human strains, whole genome sequencing (WGS) was performed on 192 isolates: 69 Salmonella enterica (all animal sources), 63 Escherichia coli (dogs), and 60 Staphylococcus pseudintermedius (dogs). RESULTS: We found that most Salmonella isolates (46/69, 67%) had no known resistance genes. Several isolates from both food and companion animals, however, showed genetic relatedness to isolates from humans. For pathogenic E. coli, no resistance genes were identified in 60% (38/63) of the isolates. Diverse resistance patterns were observed, and one of the isolates had predicted resistance to fluoroquinolones and cephalosporins, important antibiotics in human and veterinary medicine. For S. pseudintermedius, we observed a bimodal distribution of resistance genes, with some isolates having a diverse array of resistance mechanisms, including the mecA gene (19/60, 32%). CONCLUSION: The findings from this study highlight the critical importance of veterinary diagnostic laboratory data as part of any national antimicrobial resistance surveillance program. The finding of some highly resistant bacteria from companion animals, and the observation of isolates related to those isolated from humans demonstrates the public health significance of incorporating companion animal data into surveillance systems. Vet-LIRN will continue to build the infrastructure to collect the data necessary to perform surveillance of resistant bacteria as part of fulfilling its mission to advance human and animal health. A One Health approach to AMR surveillance programs is crucial and must include data from humans, animals, and environmental sources to be effective.

Chronic non-healing wound infections require long duration antibiotic therapy, and are associated with significant morbidity and health-care costs. Novel approaches for efficient, readily-translatable targeted and localised antimicrobial delivery are needed. The objectives of this study were to 1) develop low temperature-sensitive liposomes (LTSLs) containing an antimicrobial agent (ciprofloxacin) for induced release at mild hyperthermia (∼42 °C), 2) characterise in vitro ciprofloxacin release, and efficacy against Staphylococcus aureus plankton and biofilms, and 3) determine the feasibility of localised ciprofloxacin delivery in combination with MR-HIFU hyperthermia in a rat model. LTSLs were loaded actively with ciprofloxacin and their efficacy was determined using a disc diffusion method, MBEC biofilm device, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Ciprofloxacin release from LTSLs was assessed in a physiological buffer by fluorescence spectroscopy, and in vivo in a rat model using MR-HIFU. Results indicated that < 5% ciprofloxacin was released from the LTSL at body temperature (37 °C), while >95% was released at 42 °C. Precise hyperthermia exposures in the thigh of rats using MR-HIFU during intravenous (i.v.) administration of the LTSLs resulted in a four fold greater local concentration of ciprofloxacin compared to controls (free ciprofloxacin + MR-HIFU or LTSL alone). The biodistribution of ciprofloxacin in unheated tissues was fairly similar between treatment groups. Triggered release at 42 °C from LTSL achieved significantly greater S. aureus killing and induced membrane deformation and changes in biofilm matrix compared to free ciprofloxacin or LTSL at 37 °C. This technique has potential as a method to deliver high concentration antimicrobials to chronic wounds.

BACKGROUND: Male youth soccer players competing at a high level will typically engage in large volumes of soccer training from a young age. However, it is not known whether the high levels of habitual training that these high-performing players are exposed to limit their ability to respond to strength, plyometric or combined training interventions. OBJECTIVE: The primary aim of our systematic review and meta-analysis was to compare the specific effects of strength, plyometric and combined training with active controls (standard soccer training) on the strength, power and speed characteristics of high-level, highly trained young male soccer players. METHODS: We performed a literature search across PubMed, Scopus, CINAHL, Web of Science and SPORTDiscus to identify controlled studies that implemented strength, plyometric or combined training in high-level male youth soccer players. Participants were defined as high level or highly trained based on established guidelines related to either competition level or age-related weekly hours spent in soccer training. Studies needed to report at least one outcome of lower body strength, squat jump, countermovement jump, horizontal power, acceleration (0-10 m), speed (15-40 m) or change of direction speed. A meta-analysis was then performed using a random-effects model to determine the magnitude (Hedge's g) of training responses and whether effects differed across modes of training. RESULTS: From an initial return of 5464 papers, n = 34 studies met the inclusion criteria and provided a total sample of n = 1396 high-level male youth soccer players. Strength, plyometric and combined training resulted in improvements in strength, squat and countermovement jump, horizontal power, acceleration, change of direction speed (all p < 0.05; g = 0.73-1.08, moderate) and speed (p < 0.05; g = 0.40-0.59, small). Lower body strength was the only outcome where training mode had a significant effect (p < 0.05), with plyometric training producing small effects (g = 0.27, p < 0.05) compared with moderate effects for strength (g = 1.07, p < 0.05) and combined (g = 0.75, p < 0.05) training. Prediction intervals for overall effects (all training modes combined) showed that the greatest confidence that future training will lead to positive effects was in the squat and countermovement jump, horizontal power and acceleration (prediction intervals = 0.03-1.81). CONCLUSIONS: High-level, highly trained male youth soccer players can experience positive gains in indices of strength, power and speed from strength, plyometric and combined training, and the magnitude of gains are mostly similar across modes of training. Based on prediction intervals, there is a good level of certainty that future strength, plyometric and combined training in this population would lead to positive improvements in vertical and horizontal power and sprint acceleration.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the topical antiseptic activity of saline, chlorhexidine (CHX), and povidone-iodine (PI) scrubs on the skin of chickens with or without the addition of DuraPrep (DP). ANIMALS: 7 healthy adult Orpington hens (Gallus gallus domesticus). METHODS: The right apterium corporale laterale was swabbed for standard aerobic bacterial culture and colony-forming unit (CFU) determination. The apterium was divided into 3 areas and treated with sterile saline, CHX, or PI. Samples were collected by swabbing each area before and after additional treatment with DP. CFU's were counted after 48 hours of incubation. Statistical analysis was performed using a linear mixed model with a continuous outcome. RESULTS: Compared to saline, CHX and PI treatment without DP decreased CFU count by 119 (95% CI, 55 to 183; P < .001) and 123 (95% CI, 58 to 187; P < .001), respectively. The application of DP after CHX and PI further decreased CFU counts by 6 (P = .01) and 9 (P = .01), respectively. DP after saline treatment decreased counts by 128 CFU (95% CI, 63 to 192; P < .001). No significant difference was detected between saline, PI, or CHX after DP application (-1.0 CFU; 95% CI, 63.4 to -65.4; P = .98 for both PI and CHX). CLINICAL RELEVANCE: CHX or PI provided greater reductions in bacterial CFU than saline, and all combinations with DP provided similar results. No notable cutaneous reactions were detected at any point. This data suggests that a scrub protocol including CHX or PI with DP is acceptable in surgical site preparation of chickens.

BACKGROUND: Female athletes are four to six times more likely to sustain an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury than male athletes. Jump-landing biomechanics are influenced by maturation, with post-pubertal female athletes at a heightened risk of ACL injuries. OBJECTIVE: The aim of our systematic review was to identify and summarise the current evidence regarding the changes in kinematic and kinetic risk factors associated with ACL injuries during jump-landing tasks in female athletes at various stages of maturity. METHODS: A systematic search was conducted in PubMed, CINAHL, Web of Science, SPORTDiscus, EMBASE and Scopus. Articles were included if they: (1) conducted the research on uninjured female athletes with no restriction on playing level/experience; (2) provided information regarding the stage of the maturity and the scale used for estimating the maturity status of the participants; and (3) reported a biomechanical risk factor associated with ACL injuries during jump-landing tasks across at least two different maturity groups (e.g. pre-pubertal vs post-pubertal). RESULTS: Sixteen articles involving 2323 female athletes were included in our review. A total of 12 kinematic and 8 kinetic variables were identified across these studies. Of the 12 kinematic variables reported in our review, we found strong evidence for higher peak knee abduction angle in post-pubertal female individuals compared with pre-pubertal girls (p < 0.05). With regard to the 8 kinetic variables, we found strong evidence for lower relative peak vertical ground reaction force, higher external knee abduction moment and internal rotation moment in post-pubertal compared with pre-pubertal athletes. The strength of evidence for the remaining kinematic and kinetic variables ranged from conflicting to moderate and, in some instances, could not be determined. CONCLUSIONS: Our study provides an overview of the changes in biomechanical risk factors in female athletes during jump-landing tasks at various stages of maturity. We found moderate-to-limited evidence for most kinematic and kinetic variables, highlighting the need for further research.

Introduction. With expanding demand for diagnostics, newer methodologies are needed for faster, user-friendly and multiplexed pathogen detection. Metagenome-based diagnostics offer potential solutions to address these needs as sequencing technologies have become affordable. However, the diagnostic utility of sequencing technologies is currently limited since analysis of the large amounts of data generated, are either computationally expensive or carry lower sensitivity and specificity for pathogen detection.Hypothesis/Gap Statement. There is a need for novel, user friendly, and computationally inexpensive platforms for metagenome sequence analysis for diagnostic applications.Methods. In this study, we report the use of MiFi® (Microbe Finder), a computationally inexpensive algorithm with a user-friendly online interface, for accurate, rapid and multiplexed pathogen detection from metagenome sequence data. Detection is accomplished based on identification of signature genomic sequence segments of the target pathogen in metagenome sequence data. In this study we used bovine respiratory disease (BRD) complex as a model.Results and Conclusions. Using MiFi®, multiple target bacteria and a DNA virus were successfully detected in a multiplex format from metagenome sequences acquired from bovine lung tissue. Overall, 51 clinical samples were assessed and MiFi® showed 100 % analytical specificity and varying levels of analytical sensitivity (62.5 %-100 %) when compared with other traditional pathogen detection techniques, such as PCR. Consistent detection of bacteria was possible from lung samples artificially spiked with 109-104 c.f.u. of Mannheimia haemolytica.

Francisella tularensis , the causative agent for tularaemia, is a Tier 1 select agent, and a pan-species pathogen of global significance due to its zoonotic potential. Consistent genome characterization of the pathogen is essential to identify novel genes, virulence factors, antimicrobial resistance genes, for studying phylogenetics and other features of interest. This study was conducted to understand the genetic variations among genomes of F. tularensis isolated from two felines and one human source. Pan-genome analysis revealed that 97.7 % of genes were part of the core genome. All three F. tularensis isolates were assigned to sequence type A based on single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in sdhA. Most of the virulence genes were part of the core genome. An antibiotic resistance gene coding for class A beta-lactamase was detected in all three isolates. Phylogenetic analysis showed that these isolates clustered with other isolates reported from Central and South-Central USA. Assessment of large sets of the F. tularensis genome sequences is essential in understanding pathogen dynamics, geographical distribution and potential zoonotic implications.

Depopulation is frequently employed during outbreaks of high-impact animal diseases. Security breaches in sites managing mortality may jeopardize pathogen control efforts as infected carcasses can serve as an infection source. This study evaluated the viability and nucleic acid detection of veterinary-relevant viruses or their surrogates in decomposing tissues. The used viruses were: Senecavirus A1 (SVA), feline calicivirus (FCV), bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV), porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV), bovine alphaherpesvirus 1 (BoHV-1), and swinepox virus (SwPV). Viruses were spiked in three decomposing tissues (swine bone marrow and spleen, and bovine bone marrow) and maintained for 90 days. Samples were kept under two temperature conditions resembling the average soil temperature in central Oklahoma, US, during the winter and summer (5.5 °C and 29.4 °C). At 5.5 °C, SVA and FCV remained viable over the 90 days of the study, followed by BVDV (75 days), BoHV-1 and SwPV (60 days), and PEDV (10 days). At 29.4 °C, SVA remained viable for 45 days, followed by BVDV and BoHV-1 (14 days). SwPV was viable for 10 days, whereas FCV and PEDV were viable for 5 days. Overall, viral nucleic acid detection was not significantly altered during the study. These findings support decision-making and risk management in sites overseeing animal mortality.

BACKGROUND: Culture can be used for diagnosis and antifungal susceptibility testing in animals with fungal infections. Limited information is available regarding the diagnostic performance of culture and the susceptibility patterns of Histoplasma spp. isolates. HYPOTHESIS/OBJECTIVES: Describe the clinical utility of culture and the susceptibility patterns of Histoplasma spp. isolates causing histoplasmosis in cats and dogs. ANIMALS: Seventy-one client-owned animals, including 33 cats and 19 dogs with proven or probable histoplasmosis. METHODS: Culture was attempted from tissue or fluid samples. Diagnostic performance of culture, cytopathology, and antigen detection were compared with final diagnosis. Susceptibility to antifungal agents was determined for a subset (11 from dogs, 9 from cats) of culture isolates. RESULTS: Culture had a diagnostic sensitivity of 17/33 (52%; 95% confidence interval [CI], 34%-69%) and 15/19 (79%; 95% CI, 61%-97%) and specificity of 6/6 (100%; 95% CI, 54%-100%) and 10/10 (100%; 95% CI, 69%-100%) in cats and dogs, respectively. Culture was not positive in any animal in which cytopathology and antigen testing were negative. Target drug exposure (area under the concentration curve [AUC]/minimum inhibitory concentration [MIC] >25) should be easily achieved for all isolates for itraconazole, voriconazole, or posaconazole. Five of 20 (25%) isolates had fluconazole MIC ≥32 µg/mL and achieving target drug exposure is unlikely. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL IMPORTANCE: Fungal culture did not improve diagnostic sensitivity when used with cytopathology and antigen detection. Susceptibility testing might help identify isolates for which fluconazole is less likely to be effective.

SARS-CoV-2 patients have been reported to have high rates of secondary Klebsiella pneumoniae infections. Klebsiella pneumoniae is a commensal that is typically found in the respiratory and gastrointestinal tracts. However, it can cause severe disease when a person's immune system is compromised. Despite a high number of K. pneumoniae cases reported in SARS-CoV-2 patients, a co-infection animal model evaluating the pathogenesis is not available. We describe a mouse model to study disease pathogenesis of SARS-CoV-2 and K. pneumoniae co-infection. BALB/cJ mice were inoculated with mouse-adapted SARS-CoV-2 followed by a challenge with K. pneumoniae . Mice were monitored for body weight change, clinical signs, and survival during infection. The bacterial load, viral titers, immune cell accumulation and phenotype, and histopathology were evaluated in the lungs. The co-infected mice showed severe clinical disease and a higher mortality rate within 48 h of K. pneumoniae infection. The co-infected mice had significantly elevated bacterial load in the lungs, however, viral loads were similar between co-infected and single-infected mice. Histopathology of co-infected mice showed severe bronchointerstitial pneumonia with copious intralesional bacteria. Flow cytometry analysis showed significantly higher numbers of neutrophils and macrophages in the lungs. Collectively, our results demonstrated that co-infection of SARS-CoV-2 with K. pneumoniae causes severe disease with increased mortality in mice.

Nitrofurantoin, a broad-spectrum nitrofuran class antibiotic, is applied as a first-line antibiotic in treating human urinary tract infections (UTIs) due to its great efficacy and high achievable concentration. The interest in using this antibiotic in companion animals has increased due to the growing demand for effective antibiotics to treat UTIs caused by multidrug-resistant bacteria. Currently, the susceptibility interpretations for nitrofurantoin are based on the breakpoints set for humans, while the canine-specific breakpoints are still unavailable. In this study, we assessed the concentration of nitrofurantoin reaching the dog's urine using the recommended oral dosing regimen. In addition, we examined the efficacy of this breakpoint concentration against the common canine UTI pathogens, Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus pseudintermedius, and Enterococcus faecium. Eight experimental beagle dogs were treated with ~5 mg/kg of nitrofurantoin macrocrystal PO 8qh for 7 days. The urine samples were collected via cystocentesis at 2, 4, and 6 h after administration on day 2 and day 7 and used to quantify nitrofurantoin concentrations by ultra-high performance liquid chromatography. The results showed that 26.13-315.87 µg/mL nitrofurantoin was detected in the dogs' urine with a mean and median concentration of 104.82 and 92.75 µg/mL, respectively. Additionally, individual dogs presented with urinary nitrofurantoin concentrations greater than 64 µg/mL for at least 50% of the dosing intervals. This concentration efficiently killed E. coli, and S. pseudintermedius, but not E. faecium strains carrying an MIC90 value equal to 16, 16, and 128 µg/mL, respectively. Taken together, these results suggest that the value of 64 µg/mL may be set as a breakpoint against UTI pathogens, and nitrofurantoin could be an effective therapeutic drug against E. coli and S. pseudintermedius for canine UTIs.

BACKGROUND: Several studies have examined the effect of creatine monohydrate (CrM) on indirect muscle damage markers and muscle performance, although pooled data from several studies indicate that the benefits of CrM on recovery dynamics are limited. OBJECTIVE: This systematic review and meta-analysis determined whether the ergogenic effects of CrM ameliorated markers of muscle damage and performance following muscle-damaging exercises. METHODS: In total, 23 studies were included, consisting of 240 participants in the CrM group (age 23.9 ± 10.4 years, height 178 ± 5 cm, body mass 76.9 ± 7.6 kg, females 10.4%) and 229 participants in the placebo group (age 23.7 ± 8.5 years, height 177 ± 5 cm, body mass 77.0 ± 6.6 kg, females 10.0%). These studies were rated as fair to excellent following the PEDro scale. The outcome measures were compared between the CrM and placebo groups at 24-36 h and 48-90 h following muscle-damaging exercises, using standardised mean differences (SMDs) and associated p-values via forest plots. Furthermore, sub-group analyses were conducted by separating studies into those that examined the effects of CrM as an acute training response (i.e., after one muscle-damaging exercise bout) and those that examined the chronic training response (i.e., examining the acute response after the last training session following several weeks of training). RESULTS: According to the meta-analysis, the CrM group exhibited significantly lower indirect muscle damage markers (i.e., creatine kinase, lactate dehydrogenase, and/or myoglobin) at 48-90 h post-exercise for the acute training response (SMD - 1.09; p = 0.03). However, indirect muscle damage markers were significantly greater in the CrM group at 24 h post-exercise (SMD 0.95; p = 0.04) for the chronic training response. Although not significant, a large difference in indirect muscle damage markers was also found at 48 h post-exercise (SMD 1.24) for the chronic training response. The CrM group also showed lower inflammation for the acute training response at 24-36 h post-exercise and 48-90 h post-exercise with a large effect size (SMD - 1.38 ≤ d ≤ - 1.79). Similarly, the oxidative stress markers were lower for the acute training response in the CrM group at 24-36 h post-exercise and 90 h post-exercise, with a large effect size (SMD - 1.37 and - 1.36, respectively). For delayed-onset muscle soreness (DOMS), the measures were lower for the CrM group at 24 h post-exercise with a moderate effect size (SMD - 0.66) as an acute training response. However, the inter-group differences for inflammation, oxidative stress, and DOMS were not statistically significant (p > 0.05). CONCLUSION: Overall, our meta-analysis demonstrated a paradoxical effect of CrM supplementation post-exercise, where CrM appears to minimise exercise-induced muscle damage as an acute training response, although this trend is reversed as a chronic training response. Thus, CrM may be effective in reducing the level of exercise-induced muscle damage following a single bout of strenuous exercises, although training-induced stress could be exacerbated following long-term supplementation of CrM. Although long-term usage of CrM is known to enhance training adaptations, whether the increased level of exercise-induced muscle damage as a chronic training response may provide potential mechanisms to enhance chronic training adaptations with CrM supplementation remains to be confirmed.

The aim of this study was to quantify the training load in two microcycles (Ms) from pre- and another two from in-season and to analyze playing position influences on the load experienced by professional soccer players. Nineteen Asian athletes, including four central defenders, four wide defenders, six central midfielders, three wide midfielders, and two strikers participated in this study. The micro-electromechanical system was used to collect training duration, total distance, and data from Zone 1 (0−3.9 km·h−1), Zone 2 (4−7.1 km·h−1), Zone 3 (7.2−14.3 km·h−1), Zone 4 (14.4−19.7 km·h−1), and Zone 5 (>19.8 km·h−1), heart rate maximum (HRmax), and average (HRavg). The load was reduced on the last day of the Ms, with the exception of Zone 5, in M1, where higher values were found on the last day. Significant differences were observed between central and wide defenders for distance covered in Zone 4 (effect-size: ES = −4.83) in M2 and M4 (ES = 4.96). Throughout all the Ms, a constant HRmax (165−188 bpm) and HRavg (119−145 bpm) were observed. There was a tendency to decrease the load on the last day of the Ms. In general, there were higher external training loads in Ms from the pre-season than in-season. Wide defenders and wide midfielders showed higher distances covered with high-intensity running.

INTRODUCTION: Chronic low back pain (CLBP) is one of the most common disorders presenting in primary healthcare. Kinematic studies of low lumbar pelvic mobility allied with surface electromyography (sEMG) may assist in the assessment and management of CLBP. However, the applicability in the use of sEMG in the clinical setting remains uncertain. In this protocol, we aim to review the clinical utility and reproducibility of the sEMG component of these kinematic studies in patients with CLBP. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: This protocol was informed by the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic review and Meta-Analysis Protocols (PRISMA-P) and results will be reported in line with the PRISMA. Searches will be conducted on PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Embase, CINAHL and Google Scholar databases, along with a comprehensive review of grey literature. Two reviewers will conduct the searches and independently screen them, according to title and abstract. Two independent reviewers will then assess the full-text versions of those selected articles and assess the risk of bias using the defined protocol inclusion criteria. The risk of bias within the studies included will be assessed via the Quality Assessment of Diagnostic Accuracy Studies tool, V.2 and the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation guidelines will be used to assess certainty of evidence for recommendations based on the risk of bias findings. Meta-analysis will be conducted where appropriate on groups of studies with low heterogeneity. In instances of higher heterogeneity, meta-synthesis will instead be completed, comparing results in terms of increased or decreased clinical utility and/or reproducibility of sEMG. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION: Ethics approval was not required for this research. It is anticipated that the results will influence the use, interpretation and further development of sEMG in management and assessment of these patients. BACKGROUND: As a population of non-migratory Canada geese (Branta canadensis) has been growing in residential and recreational areas, public concerns on potential acquisition of zoonotic pathogens from Canada geese and their faecal deposits have been increasing. OBJECTIVES: The main study objective was to evaluate the prevalence of zoonotic microorganisms, Campylobacter spp., Cryptosporidium spp., Giardia spp. and Salmonella spp. and antimicrobial resistant Escherichia coli in faeces of Canada geese residing in North-Central Oklahoma, United States. METHODS: A total of 204 faecal samples were collected from 11 locations in North-Central Oklahoma, where public recreational areas such as lakes and ponds were located, and Canada geese were commonly inhabited. Faecal samples were examined by a centrifugal flotation to evaluate the prevalence of Cryptosporidium spp. and Giardia spp. INFECTIONS: A total of 180 faecal samples were grouped into 36 pooled samples and cultured using standard culture methods to detect the prevalence of Campylobacter spp. and Salmonella spp. INFECTIONS: The antimicrobial resistance profile was determined on 32 E. coli isolates recovered from the 36 sample pools, using the Kirby Bauer Disk Diffusion method. RESULTS: The targeted zoonotic pathogens were not identified by the faecal examinations performed. Of the 32 E. coli isolates, 17 isolates (53.1%) demonstrated resistance to ≥1 antimicrobial agent. CONCLUSIONS: Targeted zoonotic pathogens were not detected among the examined resident Canada geese in North-Central Oklahoma. The findings of multiple-antimicrobial resistant E. coli infections are potentially a public health concern although the prevalence was low in this study. Further, larger scale surveys are recommended.
