BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Sexually dimorphic populations are often located in drier habitats than cosexual populations. Gender plasticity (GP), whereby hermaphrodites alter female and male functions depending on resources, and sex-differential plasticity (SDP) between hermaphrodites and unisexuals are predicted to affect sexual system stability. Here, GP and SDP are evaluated in cosexual and gynodioecious Wurmbea biglandulosa and sub-dioecious and dioecious W. dioica. METHODS: GP was evaluated under two resource conditions, compared among sexual systems and assessed as to whether (1) males produced perfect flowers and (2) hermaphrodites altered investment in perfect (female function) and total (male function) flowers. SDP was assessed within sexual systems as differences between sex functions of hermaphrodites vs. unisexuals. Males and hermaphrodites were compared to assess whether size thresholds for female function differed among sexual systems. Plasticity costs were evaluated using correlations between female function and male traits in hermaphrodites, and in W. dioica by comparing hermaphrodite and male regressions between plant size and pollen production. KEY RESULTS: In dioecious W. dioica no males exhibited GP, whereas 100 % did in gynodioecious and cosexual W. biglandulosa. In sub-dioecious W. dioica, resources affected GP (high, 66 %; low, 42 %). Hermaphrodites in all sexual systems reduced perfect but not total flowers under low resources. Unisexuals were unaffected, demonstrating SDP for female function only. Thresholds for female function were greater in sub-dioecious W. dioica than in W. biglandulosa. Plasticity costs were detected only in sub-dioecious W. dioica. CONCLUSIONS: SDP for female function could assist female establishment in cosexual populations and maintain females in gynodioecious and sub-dioecious populations. Although the absence of male SDP should stabilize sub-dioecy, plasticity costs would render sub-dioecy unstable, favouring canalized males over hermaphrodites. This study highlights the importance of interactions between environmental conditions and hermaphrodite sex expression for the stability of dimorphic sexual systems.

Porphyrin molecules, of interest as versatile materials for organic electronics, are highly prone to formation of significantly different polymorphic phases. To elucidate the determinants for the specific polymorphic phase formed in thin films as well as for the arrangement of the molecules on a given substrate two different anisotropic substrate surfaces have been selected: KCl(100) and the oxygen reconstructed Cu(110) surface. We observe that the crystal structure of the thin films depends on the substrate, whereas the relative molecular orientations in both cases are similar. X-Ray and transmission electron diffraction of 30 nm thick tetraphenyl-porphyrin (H(2)TPP) and platinum tetraphenyl-porphyrin (PtTPP) thin films deposited on KCl(100) surfaces reveals that both kinds of molecules crystallize in a tetragonal polymorph with the (001) lattice planes, i.e. with their macrocycles, parallel to the substrate. Films deposited on the oxygen reconstructed Cu(110)-(2 × 1)O surface exhibit in contrast the triclinic polymorph even though molecules again align nearly parallel to the substrate surface as observed by LEED and X-ray diffraction. On both substrates we identify two driving forces for the epitaxial alignment of porphyrins: (i) molecules aligning with their macrocycles (nearly) parallel to the substrate surface and (ii) the porphyrin molecules forming a commensurate unit cell with the respective substrate. The polymorphic phase meeting both requirements is the most favorable to be formed on a given substrate and due to this structural flexibility in both cases well-ordered, epitaxially aligned porphyrin thin films are achieved.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Animal pollination is typically an uncertain process that interacts with self-incompatibility status to determine reproductive success. Seed set is often pollen-limited, but species with late-acting self-incompatibility (SI) may be particularly vulnerable, if self-pollen deposition results in ovule discounting. Pollination is examined and the occurrence of late-acting SI and ovule discounting assessed in Cyrtanthus breviflorus. METHODS: The pollination system was characterized by observing floral visitors and assessing nectar production and spectral reflectance of flowers. To assess late-acting SI and ovule discounting, growth of self- and cross-pollen tubes, and seed set following open pollination or hand pollination with varying proportions of self- and cross-pollen, were examined. KEY RESULTS: Native honeybees Apis mellifera scutellata pollinated flowers as they actively collected pollen. Most flowers (≥70 %) did not contain nectar, while the rest produced minute volumes of dilute nectar. The flowers which are yellow to humans are visually conspicuous to bees with a strong contrast between UV-reflecting tepals and UV-absorbing anthers and pollen. Plants were self-incompatible, but self-rejection was late-acting and both self- and cross-pollen tubes penetrated ovules. Seed set of open-pollinated flowers was pollen-limited, despite pollen deposition exceeding ovule number by 6-fold. Open-pollinated seed set was similar to that of the cross + self-pollen treatment, but was less than that of the cross-pollen-only treatment. CONCLUSIONS: Flowers of C. breviflorus are pollinated primarily by pollen-collecting bees and possess a late-acting SI system, previously unknown in this clade of the Amaryllidaceae. Pollinators of C. breviflorus deposit mixtures of cross- and self-pollen and, because SI is late-acting, self-pollen disables ovules, reducing female fertility. This study thus contributes to growing evidence that seed production in plants with late-acting SI systems is frequently limited by pollen quality, even when pollinators are abundant.

Daily undulating periodization (DUP), using daily alterations in repetitions, has been advocated as a superior method of resistance training, while traditional forms of programming for periodization (Block) have been questioned. Nineteen Division I track and field athletes were assigned to either a 10-week Block or DUP training group. Year and event were controlled. Over the course of the study, there were four testing sessions, which were used to evaluate a variety of strength characteristics, including maximum isometric strength, rate of force development, and one repetition maximum (1RM). Although, performance trends favored the Block group for strength and rate of force development, no statistical differences were found between the two groups. However, different (p ≤ 0.05) estimated volumes of work (VL) and amounts of improvement per VL were found between groups. Based upon calculated training efficiency scores, these data indicate that a Block training model is more efficient in producing strength gains than a DUP model. Additionally, alterations in testosterone (T), cortisol (C) and the T:C ratio were measured. Although there were no statistically (p ≤ 0.05) different hormone alterations between groups, relationships between training variables and hormone concentrations including the T:C ratio, indicate that Block may be more efficacious in terms of fatigue management.

How females establish in populations of cosexuals is central to understanding the evolution of gender dimorphism in angiosperms. Inbreeding avoidance hypotheses propose that females can establish and be maintained if cosexual fitness is reduced because they self-fertilize, and their progeny express inbreeding depression. Here we assess the role of inbreeding avoidance in maintaining sexual system variation in Wurmbea biglandulosa. We estimated costs of self-pollination, mating patterns, and inbreeding depression in gender monomorphic (cosexuals only) and dimorphic (males and females) populations. Costs of selfing, estimated from seed set of experimentally self- and cross-pollinated flowers, were severe in both males and cosexuals (inbreeding depression, sigma = 0.86). In a field experiment, intact males that could self produced fewer seeds than both emasculated males and females, whereas seed set of intact and emasculated cosexuals did not differ. Thus, pollinator-mediated selfing reduces fitness of males but not cosexuals under natural conditions. Outcrossing rates of males revealed substantial selfing (t = 0.68), whereas females and cosexuals were outcrossed (0.92 and 0.97). For males, progeny inbreeding coefficients exceeded parental coefficients (0.220 vs. 0.009), whereas for females and cosexuals these coefficients did not differ and approached zero. Differences in coefficients between males and their progeny indicate that selfed progeny express severe inbreeding depression (sigma = 0.93). Combined with inbreeding depression for seed set, cumulative sigma = 0.99, indicating that most or all selfed zygotes fail to reach reproductive maturity. We propose that present sexual system variation in W. biglandulosa is maintained by high inbreeding depression coupled with differences in selfing rates among monomorphic and dimorphic populations.

Floral traits that increase attractiveness to pollinators are predicted to evolve through selection on male function rather than on female function. To determine the importance of male-biased selection in dioecious Wurmbea dioica, we examined sexual dimorphism in flower size and number and the effects of these traits on pollinator visitation and reproductive success of male and female plants. Males produced more and larger flowers than did females. Bees and butterflies responded to this dimorphism and visited males more frequently than females, although flies did not differentiate between the sexes. Within sexes, insect pollinators made more visits to and visited more flowers on plants with many flowers. However, visits per flower did not vary with flower number, indicating that visitation was proportional to the number of flowers per plant. When flower number was experimentally held constant, visitation increased with flower size under sunny but not overcast conditions. Flower size but not number affected pollen removal per flower in males and deposition in females. In males, pollen removal increased with flower size 3 days after flowers opened, but not after 6 days when 98% of pollen was removed. Males with larger flowers therefore, may have higher fitness not because pollen removal is more complete, but because pollen is removed more rapidly providing opportunities to pre-empt ovules. In females, pollen deposition increased with flower size 3 days but not 6 days after flowers opened. At both times, deposition exceeded ovule production by four-fold or more, and for 2 years seed production was not limited by pollen. Flower size had no effect on seed production per plant and was negatively related to percent seed set, implying a tradeoff between allocation to attraction and reproductive success. This indicates that larger flower size in females is unlikely to increase fitness. In both sexes, gamete production was positively correlated with flower size. In males, greater pollen production would increase the advantage of large flowers, but in females more ovules may represent a resource cost. Selection to increase flower size and number in W. dioica has probably occurred through male rather than female function.

Recently, the comparison of "periodized" strength training methods has been a focus of both exercise and sport science. Daily undulating periodization (DUP), using daily alterations in repetitions, has been developed and touted as a superior method of training, while block forms of programming for periodization have been questioned. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to compare block to DUP in Division I track and field athletes. Thirty-one athletes were assigned to either a 10-wk block or DUP training group in which sex, year, and event were matched. Over the course of the study, there were 4 testing sessions, which were used to evaluate a variety of strength characteristics. Although performance trends favored the block group for strength and rate of force development, no statistically significant differences were found between the 2 training groups. However, statistically different (P ≤ .05) values were found for estimated volume of work (volume load) and the amount of improvement per volume load between block and DUP groups. Based on calculated training efficiency scores, these data indicate that a block training model is more efficient than a DUP model in producing strength gains.

Pollen commonly limits seed output in natural plant populations, but the relative contributions of pollen quantity and quality to pollen limitation remain largely unexplored. Estimates of these contributions are needed to promote better understanding of the ecological and evolutionary consequences of pollen limitation. We assessed pollen limitation and distinguished how pollen quantity and quality contributed to seed output in the predominantly outcrossing herb Bulbine bulbosa. We compared seed output of emasculated and cross-pollinated plants that could not self-pollinate with that of intact plants. Seed output was similar in emasculated and cross-pollinated plants, but it was about 50% less in intact plants. These findings indicate that the quantity of cross-pollen deposited by pollinators did not limit seed output. However, pollinators also deposited self-pollen, which reduced seed output because selfing disabled ovules, rendering them unavailable for cross-fertilization. We conclude that pollen quality rather than quantity can limit seed output under natural conditions, which supports recent proposals for greater consideration of pollen quality in the study of pollen limitation.

Co atoms and dimers embedded in a Cu(110)(2 × 1)-O surface oxide are investigated via low-temperature STM/STS experiments and first-principles simulations. It is found that Co dimers incorporated into adjacent rows of the Cu(110)(2 × 1)-O reconstruction show Kondo resonances decoupled from each other, whereas they are antiferromagnetically coupled (and do not exhibit a Kondo effect) when they are aligned on the same row. This shows that it is possible to decouple single carriers of the Kondo effect via a proper choice of the adsorption and host geometry. It is also shown that an oxidic environment presents features remarkably different from those of pure metal substrates.
