BACKGROUND: Ectopic ureters (EUs) associated with varying combinations of urinary incontinence, hydronephrosis, and urinary tract infection have been identified in related North American Entlebucher Mountain Dogs. OBJECTIVES: To characterize the disease phenotype in affected dogs and evaluate possible modes of inheritance. ANIMALS: Twenty client-owned Entlebucher Mountain Dogs. Nine dogs had clinical signs of urinary tract disease. METHODS: Prospective case series in which 17 dogs were evaluated with excretory urography, ultrasonography, and urethrocystoscopy. Three additional dogs were evaluated by necropsy alone. Clinical and pedigree histories from 165 North American Entlebuchers were compiled for analysis. RESULTS: Eleven female and 2 male dogs were found to have EUs. Six females and 1 male were continent. Bilateral intravesicular ectopic ureters (IVEUs) were identified in 9 dogs, bilateral extravesicular ectopic ureters (EVEUs) in 3 dogs, and 1 dog had IVEU and EVEU. Hydronephrosis was identified in 5 dogs, 3 of which had bilateral IVEUs. Two necropsied dogs had bilateral hydronephrosis with presumed ureterovesical junction obstruction associated with chronic granulation tissue or lymphoplasmacytic inflammation. Twenty-six dogs with EUs were identified in the pedigree. Because of incomplete penetrance, mode of inheritance could not be determined. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL IMPORTANCE: Ureteral ectopia is common in North American Entlebucher Mountain Dogs and clinical signs alone could not reliably predict disease phenotype. EVEUs were associated with urinary incontinence and occasionally hydronephrosis. IVEUs were clinically silent or associated with hydronephrosis. Further analyses are necessary to confirm and characterize the hereditary nature of the disorder.

OBJECTIVES: To detect and localise bacteria in gallbladder mucoceles using fluorescence in situ hybridisation (FISH). To report clinical signs, clinicopathologic abnormalities, sonographic findings and histopathological findings in FISH+ and FISH- dogs with gallbladder mucoceles. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Retrospective review of signalment, clinical signs, clinicopathologic and sonographic findings of 25 cases of histopathologically confirmed gallbladder mucocele. Histopathological sections of gallbladder mucocele were evaluated for cystic mucinous hyperplasia, cystic mucinous hyperplasia with cholecystitis and rupture. The number and spatial distribution of bacteria was determined by eubacterial FISH. Gallbladder contents were cultured in 21 dogs. RESULTS: Bacteria were detected within or adherent to the gallbladder wall in eight of 25 (32%) cases. Bacterial culture was positive in one dog. Cystic mucinous hyperplasia with concurrent cholecystitis was found in 17 of 25 (68%) of dogs with gallbladder mucocele. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: FISH was more sensitive for detection of bacteria in gallbladder mucoceles when compared to bacterial culture of bile. Cholecystitis was common in dogs with gallbladder mucocele. Further study is required to elucidate the relationship of cystic mucinous hyperplasia, bacteria and cholecystitis in the aetiopathogenesis and progression of gallbladder mucocele.

18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography combined with computed tomography (18FDG-PET/CT) has been shown to be effective for staging human oral squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) but its application for cats with oral SCC is unknown. Twelve cats with biopsy-proven oral SCC were imaged with whole body 18FDG-PET/CT to determine its value as a diagnostic imaging and staging tool and fine needle aspirates were obtained of accessible regional lymph nodes. All tumors were FDG avid and conspicuous on 18FDG-PET/CT images, with an average of the maximum standardized uptake value 9.88 ± 5.33 SD (range 2.9-24.9). Soft tissue infiltrative tumors that were subtle and ill defined on CT were highly visible and more extensive on FDG-PET/CT. Tumors invading the osseous structures were more similar in extent on 18FDG-PET/CT and CT although they were more conspicuous on PET images. Three cytologically confirmed metastases were hypermetabolic on PET, while two of those metastases were equivocal on CT.
