RESUMO

The ability to manipulate the dimensions, areal density, and form of substrate-supported Au and Ag nanoparticles (NPs) is highly desirable for utilizing their plasmonic properties in biosensing, photovoltaics, and nanophotonic applications. The transformation of thin films into the substrate-supported nanostructures by solid-state dewetting (SSD), provides an avenue to manipulate the dimensional aspects of nanostructures simply and cost-effectively on a large scale. However, spontaneous agglomeration of the film produces randomly distributed and non-uniform nanostructures that must be controlled. Here, we have systematically studied the effect of annealing temperature, between 200 °C and 750 °C, on the dewetting morphology evolution of Au, Ag, and Au-Ag bilayer ultrathin films sputter deposited on thec-plane (0001) sapphire substrates. Regardless of the film thickness, Ag films dewet faster than Au films and produce spherical NPs, compared to faceted Au NPs, with broader size distribution. Whereas, by the SSD of Au-Ag bilayer ultrathin films, highly spherical and monodisperse AuAg bimetallic NPs can be fabricated. Furthermore, we have shown the possibility of fabricating the AuAg bimetallic NPs of varying compositions by adjusting the thickness of individual layers, thus enabling us to smoothly tune the spectral location of plasmonic resonance within the visible range.

RESUMO

Several nations around the world use rice as their primary food staple because of its tremendous nutritional value. India's expanding population has sparked a proliferation of rice mills as a result of the country's growing rice demand. However, small and medium-scale industries lack adequate facilities for processing effluents and other waste generated. Paddy is typically processed by parboiling, which involves soaking it in water, boiling it with steam, and then drying and milling. Around 1-1.5 L of water is necessary to partially cook 1 kg of unhusked rice, with approximately half of this water being discharged as effluent. Disposal of rice mill effluent (RME) in water bodies or on the land causes severe damage to soil and water. An inclusive examination of diverse approaches for the treatment and stabilization of partially cooked rice milling effluents is provided. Moreover, the document provides a concise overview of contemporary and environmentally friendly technologies for treating RME. Adsorption, electrocoagulation, chemical coagulation, and bioremediation using microbes, plants, and microalgae are all included in these methods. This manuscript discusses the concept of a circular economy, which is focused on enhancing environmental sustainability through the recycling and repurposing of generated waste into raw materials for the creation of new products. In addition, this review aims to focus on the impact of RME on soils and water species and the status of sustainable management at the point of circular economy with RME bioenergy production (bioelectricity, biomethane, and bio-hydrogen).

RESUMO

Present study is a maiden attempt to assess net ecosystem exchange (NEE) of carbon dioxide (CO2) flux from jute crop (Corchorus olitorius L.) in the Indo-Gangetic plain by using open-path eddy covariance (EC) technique. Diurnal variations of NEE were strongly influenced by growth stages of jute crop. Daytime peak NEE varied from - 5 µmol m-2 s-1 (in germination stage) to - 23 µmol m-2 s-1 (in fibre development stage). The ecosystem was net CO2 source during nighttime with an average NEE value of 5-8 µmol m-2 s-1. Combining both daytime and nighttime CO2 fluxes, jute ecosystem was found to be a net CO2 sink on a daily basis except the initial 9 days from date of sowing. Seasonal and growth stage-wise NEEs were computed, and the seasonal total NEE over the jute season was found to be - 268.5 gC m-2 (i.e. 10.3 t CO2 ha-1). In different jute growth stages, diurnal variations of NEE were strongly correlated (R2 > 0.9) with photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD). Ecosystem level photosynthetic efficiency parameters were estimated at each growth stage of jute crop using the Michaelis-Menten equation. The maximum values of photosynthetic capacity (Pmax, 63.3 ± 1.15 µmol CO2 m-2 s-1) and apparent quantum yield (α, 0.072 ± 0.0045 µmol CO2 µmol photon-1) were observed during the active vegetative stage, and the fibre development stage, respectively. Results of the present study would significantly contribute to understanding of the carbon flux from the Indian agro-ecosystems, which otherwise are very sparse.

RESUMO

The present study is a maiden attempt to assess jute crop lodging due to super cyclone Amphan (20 May 2020) by synergistic use of Sentinel-2 (optical) and Sentinel-1 (SAR) data over part of West Bengal, India. Pre-event Sentinel-2 data (9 April, 14 May) along with the ground information were used to map the jute crop of the affected districts with accuracy of 85%. The cross-polarized backscatter (σ0VH) of Sentinel-1 was found to be sensitive to the sudden change in the canopy structure due to lodging and partial flooding. [Formula: see text](σ0VH_22 May - σ0VH_16 May) indicating post-event damage was > 2.5 dB over the affected jute crop and [Formula: see text] (σ0VH_22 May - σ0VH_28 May) representing post-event recovery showed > 1.5 dB for recovered crop, depending on the crop vigor/height. Decision matrix was prepared combining [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] for NDVI-based crop vigor strata (low, medium, and high) to classify the area into affected, marginally affected and normal. Overall accuracy of the classified map was found to be 84.12% with kappa coefficient of 0.74. Nearly, 12.5% of the jute area, i.e., 38,119 ha was found to be either affected or marginally affected due to Amphan and distributed in the southern part of Murshidabad, north-eastern Nadia, northern 24 Paraganas (N), and middle region of Hooghli district. Geospatial map of block-wise affected jute area was prepared to facilitate informed decision making. The study demonstrated an operational methodology for assessing crop lodging due to natural calamities to support relief management and crop insurance.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To determine the performance of a glycosylated fibronectin (GlyFn) point-of-care (POC) test for pre-eclampsia (PE) in a large Southeast Asian cohort (India) in comparison to previously described biomarkers. DESIGN: A total of 798 pregnant women at ≥20 weeks of gestation were enrolled in a prospective case-control study. Study participants included 469 normotensive women with urinary mg protein/mmol creatinine ratio <0.3, 135 with PE (hypertension with urinary mg protein/mmol creatinine ratio ≥0.3) and 194 with gestational hypertension (hypertension with urinary mg protein/mmol creatinine ratio <0.3). METHODS: GlyFn levels were determined using a POC device and PIGF, sFlt-1 and PAPPA2 levels were determined by immunoassay. Performance was assessed using logistic regression modelling and receiver-operating characteristic (ROC) curves. Classification performance and positive and negative predictive values are reported at specific thresholds. RESULTS: Increased levels of GlyFn, soluble fms-like tyrosine kinase-1 (sFlt-1) and pregnancy-associated placental protein A2 (PAPPA2), and decreased levels of placental growth factor (PlGF) were significantly associated (P < 0.01) with clinically defined PE. Area under the ROC (AUROC) values with 95% confidence intervals were: GlyFn, 0.99 (0.98-0.99); PlGF, 0.96 (0.94-0.98); sFlt-1, 0.86 (0.83-0.89); and PAPPA2, 0.96 (0.94-0.97). Of subjects with GH, 48% were positive for more than two PE biomarkers, and 70% of these delivered preterm. CONCLUSIONS: The Lumella™ GlyFn POC test has been validated in a low/middle-income country setting for PE diagnosis and may be a useful adjunctive tool for early identification, appropriate triage, and improved outcomes. TWEETABLE ABSTRACT: The Lumella™ point-of-care test had excellent performance in diagnosing PE in a large Southeast Asian cohort.

RESUMO

Forest fire is considered as one of the major threats to global biodiversity and a significant source of greenhouse gas emissions. Rising temperatures, weather conditions, and topography promote the incidences of fire due to human ignition in South Asia. Because of its synoptic, multi-spectral, and multi-temporal nature, remote sensing data can be a state of art technology for forest fire management. This study focuses on the spatio-temporal patterns of forest fires and identifying hotspots using the novel geospatial technique "emerging hotspot analysis tool" in South Asia. Daily MODIS active fire locations data of 15 years (2003-2017) has been aggregated in order to characterize fire frequency, fire density, and hotspots. A total of 522,348 active fire points have been used to analyze risk of fires across the forest types. Maximum number of forest fires in South Asia was occurring during the January to May. Spatial analysis identified areas of frequent burning and high fire density in South Asian countries. In South Asia, 51% of forest grid cells were affected by fires in 15 years. Highest number of fire incidences was recorded in tropical moist deciduous forest and tropical dry deciduous forest. The emerging hotspots analysis indicates prevalence of sporadic hotspots, followed by historical hotspots, consecutive hotspots, and persistent hotspots in South Asia. Of the seven South Asian countries, Bangladesh has highest emerging hotspot area (34.2%) in forests, followed by 32.2% in India and 29.5% in Nepal. Study results offer critical insights in delineation of fire vulnerable forest landscapes which will stand as a valuable input for strengthening management of fires in South Asia.

RESUMO

Riot control agents (RCA) are lachrymatory, irritating compounds which temporarily incapacitate the uncontainable crowd. Ortho-Chlorobenzylidene-malononitrile (CS), 2-chloroacetophenone (CN), dibenz[b,f]1:4-oxazepine (CR), and nonivamide (PAVA) are synthetic RCAs, while oleoresin extract of chili known as oleoresin capsicum (OC) a natural irritant has been in use by various law enforcement agencies. Though efficacy of these agents is beyond doubt, they suffer from certain drawbacks including toxicity, production cost, and ecological compatibility. Presently, we have evaluated the safety of CR, OC, and PAVA on inhalation variables along with oral lethality. Additionally, the liver function test (LFT) in serum and lungs function was evaluated in broncho-alveolar-lavage fluid (BALF), both collected on the 14th day after RCA exposure. Animals then sacrificed and histopathology of liver and lungs was carried out. Results showed OC and PAVA to be more toxic than CR with an oral LD50 of 150 and 200 mg/kg body weight, respectively, while CR was safe at >3 g/kg body weight. All three agents caused severe impairment of respiratory variables bringing down normal respiration by >80% with rise in sensory irritation. Recovery from the irritating effect of CR was more rapid than OC and PAVA. LFT and BALF variables were not significantly different from that of control. There were no remarkable histopathological changes in liver and lungs. Hence, as per results, CR is safest among all synthetic and natural origin RCAs and can be safely used for effective dispersion of disobedient mob.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a common cause of morbidity and mortality in end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients on hemodialysis (HD) among whom it is 5-20 times higher than in the general population. Some of the nontraditional risk factors such as oxidative stress and inflammation are related to the progress of CVD in HD patients. Several, but not all studies, reported that inflammatory and oxidative stress markers are increased during a single session of HD, mimicking changes that occur during acute immune activation. This study was taken up to evaluate the changes in the inflammatory and oxidative stress markers during a single HD session in patients with chronic kidney disease. METHODS: Twenty-five ESRD patients on maintenance HD and 25 controls were included in the study. Blood samples were obtained from the patients before starting of hemodialysis (pre-HD) and after completion of hemodialysis (post-HD). The changes in serum Pentraxin-3, hs-CRP, malondialdehyde (MDA) and ferric reducing ability of plasma (FRAP) levels were measured in pre- and post-HD ESRD patients and compared with healthy control group. RESULTS: This study found increased levels of Pentraxin-3, hs-CRP, MDA, and decreased level of FRAP in HD patients compared to controls. CONCLUSIONS: Hemodialysis procedure contributes to inflammation and oxidative stress.

RESUMO

AIMS: To confirm superiority on glycaemic control by switching from sitagliptin to liraglutide 1.8 mg/d versus continued sitagliptin. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A randomized, multicentre, double-blind, double-dummy, active-controlled trial across 86 office- or hospital-based sites in North America, Europe and Asia. Subjects with type 2 diabetes who had inadequate glycaemic control (glycated haemoglobin [HbA1c] 7.5-9.5% on sitagliptin (100 mg/d) and metformin (≥1500 mg daily) for ≥90 days were randomized to either switch to liraglutide (n = 203) or continue sitagliptin (n = 204), both with metformin. The primary endpoint was change in HbA1c from baseline to week 26. Change in body weight was a confirmatory secondary endpoint. RESULTS: Greater reduction in mean HbA1c was achieved with liraglutide than with continued sitagliptin [-1.14% vs. -0.54%; estimated mean treatment difference (ETD): -0.61% (95% CI -0.82 to -0.40; p < 0.0001)], confirming superiority of switching to liraglutide. Body weight was reduced more with liraglutide [-3.31 kg vs. -1.64 kg; ETD: -1.67 kg (95% CI -2.34 to -0.99; p < 0.0001)]. Nausea was more common with liraglutide [44 subjects (21.8%)] than with continued sitagliptin [16 (7.8%)]. Three subjects (1.5%) taking sitagliptin reported a confirmed hypoglycaemic episode. CONCLUSIONS: Subjects insufficiently controlled with sitagliptin who switch to liraglutide can obtain clinically relevant reductions in glycaemia and body weight, without compromising safety. A switch from sitagliptin to liraglutide provides an option for improved management of type 2 diabetes while still allowing patients to remain on dual therapy.

RESUMO

Dipicolinic acid (DPA) is an important chemical marker for the detection of bacterial spores. In this study, complexes of lanthanide series elements such as erbium, europium, neodymium, and terbium were prepared with pyrocatechol violet and effectively immobilized the pyrocatechol violet (PV)-metal complex on a filter paper using polyvinyl alcohol. These filter paper strips were employed for the onsite detection of bacterial spores. The test filter papers were evaluated quantitatively with different concentrations of DPA and spores of various bacteria. Among the four lanthanide ions, erbium displayed better sensitivity than the other ions. The limit of detection of this test for DPA was 60 µM and 5 × 10(6) spores. The effect of other non-spore-forming bacteria and interfering chemicals on the test strips was also evaluated. The non-spore-forming bacteria did not have considerable effect on the test strip whereas chemicals such as EDTA had significant effects on the test results. The present test is rapid and robust, capable of providing timely results for better judgement to save resources on unnecessary decontamination procedures during false alarms.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES: Postmenopausal women constitute an ideal model for studying the extent of hypothalamo-pituitary gonadal (HPG) axis suppression in critical illness as the gonadotropins are normally high and non-cyclical in them. The objective was to assess the impact of acute severe illness in postmenopausal women on the HPG axis and the activities of the hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenal (HPA), the hypothalamo- pituitary-thyroid (HPT) axes; and levels of serum prolactin, by comparison between critically ill postmenopausal women and otherwise healthy postmenopausal women. METHODS: Thirty five consecutive postmenopausal women older than 60 yr admitted to medical intensive care with a s0 implified a0 cute p0 hysiology s0 core II (SAPS II) more than 30 were included. On day five of their in-hospital stay, blood samples were collected for oestradiol, luteinizing hormone (LH), follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), cortisol, androstenedione, prolactin and thyroid profile. Thirty five apparently healthy postmenopausal women were selected as controls. RESULTS: Levels of LH, FSH, thyrotropin, free thyroxin (fT 4 ) and free tri-iodothyronine (fT 3 ) were lower while oestradiol, cortisol and dehydroepiandrosterone were higher among patients in comparison to healthy controls. Prolactin levels were similar in patients and controls. Among sick patients both FSH and fT 4 showed a negative correlation ( P<0.05) with the SAPS II score. INTERPRETATION & CONCLUSIONS: In critically ill postmenopausal women, paradoxically elevated oestrogen levels despite gonadotropin suppression suggests a non-ovarian origin. Prolactin remained unaltered in patients despite their illness, possibly reflecting atrophy of lactotrophs in menopause.

RESUMO

A pair of transverse wobbling bands is observed in the nucleus ^{135}Pr. The wobbling is characterized by ΔI=1, E2 transitions between the bands, and a decrease in the wobbling energy confirms its transverse nature. Additionally, a transition from transverse wobbling to a three-quasiparticle band comprised of strong magnetic dipole transitions is observed. These observations conform well to results from calculations with the tilted axis cranking model and the quasiparticle rotor model.

RESUMO

Increased serum and mRNA levels of cytokines in patients with dengue virus (DV) infection suggest that cytokines are one of the key factors in the pathogenesis of disease caused by this virus. Here, we tested 211 serum and 56 mRNA samples from an equal number of dengue cases to determine the levels of interleukin-8 (IL-8), interferon gamma (IFN-γ), interleukin-10 (IL-10) and transforming growth factor beta (TGF-ß). A total 70 serum and 15 mRNA samples from healthy individual were also tested for cytokines and served as controls. Serum and mRNA levels of IL-8 were highest in the earlier days of dengue infection. IFNγ levels peaked one or two days before defervescence. Levels of IL-10 and TGF-ß were highest later in dengue infection, and TGF-ß levels peaked on the day of defervescence. Mean levels of IFNγ, TGF ß and IL-10 were higher in samples from dengue cases, irrespective of severity, than in healthy controls. In contrast, the level of IL-8 was significantly higher in samples from severe dengue cases and lower in cases of dengue without warning signs than in healthy controls. Children (82.2 % of 101 paediatric cases) commonly had severe dengue illness. Samples that were positive for anti-DV IgG antibody had higher levels of IL-8 and TGF ß. DV-2 infections were associated with severe dengue illness. IL-8 and IFNγ levels were higher in the presence of warning signs of severe dengue. Levels of IL-8, IL-10 and TGF ß were independently associated with disease outcome. These data provide evidence of an association of IL-8, IFNγ, TGF ß and IL-10 levels with the severity of dengue illness. Especially, IL-8 levels can be used as a predictor of severe DV infection.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Free radical-mediated oxidative stress (OS) has been implicated in the pathogenesis of thyroid disorders. The ischemia-modified albumin (IMA) has been proposed as a marker of protein oxidative damage, which has been found to reflect hypoxic stress. AIM: Our aim was to evaluate IMA, malondialdehyde (MDA), and reduced glutathione (GSH) levels in patients with overt hypothyroidism (OHT) and subclinical hypothyroidism (SHT) in comparison to euthyroid controls. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Albumin, IMA, IMA/albumin ratio, MDA, GSH, total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), HDL-Cholesterol were assessed in 105 subjects grouped into OHT, SHT patients, and euthyroid controls with 35 subjects in each group. RESULTS: MDA and IMA levels were significantly elevated while the GSH concentrations were significantly lower in OHT and SHT patients compared to controls (p < 0.01). When IMA values were normalized for albumin concentrations, the IMA/albumin ratio was also significantly elevated in both patient groups compared to controls (p < 0.01). These changes were more pronounced in the OHT group when compared to SHT group. In OHT group, thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) levels showed significant positive correlation with MDA (r = 0.470, p = 0.004), IMA (r = 0.530, p = 0.001), and IMA/albumin ratio (r = 0.525, p = 0.001). Both IMA (r = -0.342, p = 0.041), IMA/albumin ratio (r = -0.378, p = 0.023) showed significant negative correlation with GSH in OHT patients. No significant correlation between variables was, however, observed in SHT group. CONCLUSIONS: Increase of MDA and IMA levels with decreased antioxidant status indicate the presence of OS in hypothyroid patients, which was more pronounced in OHT patients. Elevated levels of IMA can be a clinically useful marker of protein oxidative damage and OS in hypothyroidism.

RESUMO

T-2 toxin is the most toxic among mycotoxins and poses a potential health hazard for both humans and animals. At high doses, T-2 toxin can cause shock-like syndrome that can result in death. We evaluated the effect of time course and route of exposure on hepatic oxidative damage in mice and it is only such study so far to compare the effects of dermal and subcutaneous exposure of T-2 toxin. Mice were exposed to 1 LD50 of T-2 toxin either by percutaneous (5.94 mg/kg body weight) or subcutaneous (1.54 mg/kg body weight) route and sacrificed at 0, 1, 3, and 7 days postexposure. Analysis of a number of serum biochemical variables, antioxidant enzymes activity, gene and protein expression by immunoblot assay showed time and route dependent effects of T-2 induced hepatic oxidative damage. Time dependent increase in protein carbonyl content and protein oxidation was seen in serum and liver. Results of our study may provide possible mechanism for developing medical countermeasures against T-2 toxin.

RESUMO

Seasonal variation in the proximate and mineral composition of Kappaphycus alvarezii were investigated in the present study, moreover, the relationship between the nutritive components of this seaweed and the environment were also established. Carbohydrates represented the major portion of the algae (i.e. average total carbohydrate content was 23.01 ± 1.64 g/100 g DW), while the lipid content was the lowest among the constituents investigated (0.39 ± 0.04 to 0.91 ± 0.51 g/100 g DW). The protein content of K. alvarezii varied from 12.69 ± 0.6 to 23.61 ± 0.02 g/100 g DW, and the fiber content varied between 9.68 ± 0.08 to 18.57 ± 0.15 g/100 g DW. Highest total mineral content (29939.61 ± 9340.38 mg/100 g DW) was observed in April 2005, while least values were recorded in January 2006 i.e. (10997.62 ± 1120.26 mg/100 g DW). The Na/K ratio during the study ranged from 0.34 to 0.87. All the samples showed remarkable semi-refined carrageenan (SRC) yield ranging from 42.70 ± 1.07 to 63.73 ± 1.73 % (average 53.90 ± 1.37 %), and, the samples collected during December 2004 and January 2006 demonstrated maximum gel strengths i.e. 743 ± 15.28 and 783.33 ± 15.28 g·cm(-2) respectively. Various environmental parameters influenced the chemical composition of K. alvarezii, and these parameters demonstrated seasonal fluctuations. Moreover, based on the nutritional composition obtained, it could be stated that this seaweed has great scope to be incorporated into several food products as an excellent nutritional supplement, or as a value additive in animal or pet food.

RESUMO

Despite the fact that Chikungunya resurgence is associated with epidemic of unprecedented magnitude, there are challenges in the field of its clinical diagnosis. However, serological tests in an ELISA format provide a rapid tool for the diagnosis of Chikungunya infection. Indeed, ELISAs based on recombinant proteins hold a great promise as these methods are cost effective and are free from the risk of handling biohazardous material. In this study, the performance of recombinant CHIKV antigens was compared in various ELISA formats for the diagnosis of Chikungunya. Two recombinant antigens derived from the envelope proteins of Chikungunya virus were prepared and evaluated by comparing their competence for detecting circulating antibodies in serum samples of patients infected with CHIKV using MAC-ELISA and indirect IgM-ELISA. The efficacy of the recombinant antigens was also compared with the native antigen. The indirect antibody capture IgM microplate ELISA revealed ≥90% concordance with the native antigen in detecting the CHIKV specific IgM antibodies whereas the recombinant antigen based MAC-ELISA showed 100% specificity. The recombinant antigens used in this study were effective and reliable targets for the diagnosis of CHIKV infection and also provide an alternative for native antigen use which is potentially biohazardous.

RESUMO

Dengue is the most rapidly spreading mosquito-borne viral disease in the world, and as a larger proportion of the population is being affected, more unusual manifestations are being reported. Very few studies have documented unusual manifestations of dengue in South India. This prospective study was undertaken from July 2011 to June 2013 to document rare manifestations of dengue fever in 175 hospitalized patients. The clinical diagnosis was confirmed by the detection of NS1Ag, dengue IgM, or IgG by ELISA and/or a RT-PCR and CDC real-time PCR for dengue virus (DENV) RNA. The daily profiles of the hematological and biochemical investigations were followed and recorded. Unusual and rare manifestations of dengue were documented for 115 patients (66 %). Hepatitis was observed in 70 % of the cases. Pleural effusion was seen in 11 %, acute renal failure in 10 %, neurological complications such as encephalitis in 7.4 %, myocarditis in 9 %, and bleeding gastric ulcers in 3.4 % of the cases. DENV serotype 2 was more prevalent in patients with unusual manifestations of dengue in our study. The WHO classification system does not include unusual and rare manifestations; hence, it is essential to be aware of these manifestations and closely monitor them for better clinical management and outcome of patients.

RESUMO

Donor-linker-acceptor (DSSA) is a concept in fluorescence chemistry with acceptor being a fluorescent compound (FRET) or quencher. The DSSA probes used to measure thiol levels in vitro and in vivo. The reduction potential of these dyes are in the range of -0.60 V, much lower than the best thiol reductant reported in literature, the DTT (-0.33 V). DSSA disulphide having an unusually low reduction potential compared to the typical thiol reductants is a puzzle. Secondly, DSSA probes have a cyclized rhodamine ring as acceptor which does not have any spectral overlap with fluorescein, but quenches its absorbance and fluorescence. To understand the structural features of DSSA probes, we have synthesized DSSANa and DSSAOr. The calculated reduction potential of these dyes suggest that DSSA probes have an alternate mechanism from the FRET based quenching, namely hydrophobic interaction or dye to dye quenching. The standard reduction potential change with increasing complexity and steric hindrance of the molecule is small, suggesting that ultra- low Eo' has no contribution from the disulphide linker and is based on structural interactions between fluorescein and cyclized rhodamine. Our results help to understand the DSSA probe quenching mechanism and provide ways to design fluorescent probes.

RESUMO

Worldwide, both lymphatic filariasis (LF) and leprosy are major causes of morbidity and functional limitation. Despite an abundance of data on the impairment caused by these infections in isolation, there is little data on disability in patients unfortunate enough to be affected by both infections. We present two cases of patients with LF and leprosy comorbidity. Both cases suffer from Grade 2 disability and chronic lymphedema in the same limb (left and right leg, respectively). These morbidities cause significant functional limitation in the patients' activities of daily living. Both LF and leprosy are endemic in India and their comorbid conditions contribute to functional limitation. However, there is still currently no integrated scale for assessment of interventions for functional limitation in these patients. Investigating and managing impairment and functional limitations individually is the least cost effective and sustainable strategy. Considering the similarities of caring for functional limitations in both diseases and assuming its efficacy, augmentation of LF care services with leprosy referral centres may be beneficial. Integrated approaches have been pilot tested at district level in states in India under the title 'Integrated Prevention of Deformity project' (IPoD). Further work is required to identify a reliable, holistic, functional impairment scoring system, which allows for comparison between diseases. This may help promote greater understanding of impairments and functional limitations these cause and allow effective monitoring and evaluation of all aspects, activities and stages of similar programmes.
