RESUMO

Quantum Hall states can be characterized by their chiral edge modes. Upon softening the edge potential, the edge has long been known to undergo spontaneous reconstruction driven by charging effects. In this Letter we demonstrate a qualitatively distinct phenomenon driven by exchange effects, in which the ordering of the edge modes at ν=3 switches abruptly as the edge potential is made softer, while the ordering in the bulk remains intact. We demonstrate that this phenomenon is robust, and has many verifiable experimental signatures in transport.

RESUMO

We study a ring geometry, coupled to two normal metallic leads, which has a Majorana bound state (MBS) embedded in one of its arms and is threaded by Aharonov-Bohm (AB) flux ϕ. We show that by varying the AB flux, the two leads go through resonance in an anticorrelated fashion while the resonance conductance is quantized to 2e^{2}/h. We further show that such anticorrelation is completely absent when the MBS is replaced by an Andreev bound state (ABS). Hence this anti-correlation in conductance when studied as a function of ϕ provides a unique signature of the MBS which cannot be faked by an ABS. We contrast the phase sensitivity of the MBS and ABS in terms of tunneling conductances. We argue that the relative phase between the tunneling amplitude of the electrons and holes from either lead to the level (MBS or ABS), which is constrained to 0,π for the MBS and unconstrained for the ABS, is responsible for this interesting contrast in the AB effect between the MBS and ABS.

RESUMO

Orthodontic therapy is becoming a mainstay for the correction of esthetic and functional disturbances in both young and older adults. Orthodontic forces act on the periodontium and can have wide-ranging effects, from beneficial to harmful, from being a hindrance to oral hygiene maintenance to causing irreversible periodontal breakdown. In some patients, the presence of periodontal conditions like gingival recession, before start of orthodontic therapy, raises many questions. Much controversy and confusion exist regarding the need for periodontal therapy, its sequencing, especially in case of recession in a young patient who needs orthodontic therapy. An interactive, interdisciplinary approach is essential in such cases for success. This case report illustrates the interdisciplinary management of a young patient with gingival recession with an eight-year follow-up of the case.

RESUMO

We propose a three-terminal spin-polarized STM setup for probing the helical nature of the Luttinger liquid edge state that appears in the quantum spin Hall system. We show that the three-terminal tunneling conductance depends on the angle (θ) between the magnetization direction of the tip and the local orientation of the electron spin on the edge while the two terminal conductance is independent of this angle. We demonstrate that chiral injection of an electron into the helical Luttinger liquid (when θ is zero or π) is associated with fractionalization of the spin of the injected electron in addition to the fractionalization of its charge. We also point out a spin current amplification effect induced by the spin fractionalization.

RESUMO

Rivastigmine is a drug against Alzheimer's disease, and is a non-pharmacopoeial compound. During the preparation of rivastigmine in our laboratory, two impurities were detected and identified with a simple and sensitive reversed-phase liquid chromatography coupled with electrospray-mass spectrometry. The same impurities were also observed in commercial batches. These impurities were isolated by preparative HPLC and co-injected with rivastigmine sample to confirm the retention times in HPLC. These impurities were characterized as N,N-dimethyl-3-[1-dimethylaminoethyl]phenylcarboxylate (dimethyl-rivastigmine) and N,N-diethyl-3-[1-dimethylaminoethyl]phenylcarboxamide (diethyl-rivastigmine). Structural elucidation of these impurities by spectral data (1H NMR, 13C NMR and MS) is discussed.

RESUMO

We show that the electrical transport across a minimal model for a time-reversal symmetry breaking Weyl semi-metal (WSM) involving two Weyl nodes can be interpreted as an interferometer in momentum space. The interference phase depends on the distance between the Weyl nodes ([Formula: see text]) and is anisotropic. It is further shown that a minimal inversion symmetry broken model for a WSM with four Weyl nodes effectively mimics a situation corresponding to having two copies of the interferometer due to the presence of an orbital pseudo-spin domain wall in momentum space. We point out that the value of the [Formula: see text] and consequently the interference phase can be tuned by driving the WSMs resulting in oscillations in the two terminal conductance measured in the direction of splitting of the Weyl nodes.

RESUMO

A simple, rapid, selective and stability indicating reversed phase-ultra performance liquid chromatography method was developed and validated for the simultaneous quantification of process related and degradation impurities present in Atazanavir and Ritonavir tablets. The two proposed drug components and their respective impurities were separated using Acquity BEH C18 (100 mm × 2.1 mm), 1.7 µ column at a flow rate of 0.4 mL/min. Buffer used as Mobile phase-A which consists of 0.01 M monobasic potassium hydrogen phosphate adjusted the pH to 3.6 and acetonitrile is used as organic modifier (mobile phase-B). The detector wavelength of 240 nm was used for quantifying the impurities. Both the drug components along with their impurities were eluted within a runtime of 18 min. The performance of the developed method was checked by validating the method according to the requirements of International Conference on Harmonization for parameters such as specificity, precision, linearity, ruggedness, accuracy, sensitivity (limit of detection (LOD) and limit of quantitation (LOQ)) and robustness. Linearity and range were established from LOQ level to 150% level. Accuracy of the method was demonstrated from LOQ level to 150% level. The developed stability indicating method is capable for determination of impurities of Atazanavir and Ritonavir in combined tablet dosage form as well as individual dosage forms also. The reported method enables lesser solvent consumption and reduces time and cost of the analysis in quality control laboratory.

RESUMO

Impurities found in stressed and stability studies of olanzapine (polymorphic form-I) [1-7] in both drug substance and drug product are described. These impurities are identified as 4-(4-methyl-1-piperazinyl)-3-hydroxymethylidene-1H-benzo[b][1,4]diazepine-2(3H)-thione (hydroxymethylidene thione) and (Z)-4-(4-methyl-1-piperazinyl)-3-acetoxymethylidene-1H-benzo[b][1,4]diazapine-2(3H)-thione (acetoxymethylidene thione). An oxidative degradation pathway of olanzapine, for the formation of these impurities, has been proposed.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Poor treatment adherence leading to risk of drug resistance, treatment failure, relapse, death and persistent infectiousness remains an impediment to the tuberculosis control programmes. The objective of the study was to identify predictors of default among new smear positive TB patients registered for treatment to suggest possible interventions to set right the problems to sustain and enhance the programme performance. METHODOLOGY AND PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Twenty districts selected from six states were assigned to six strata formed, considering the geographic, socio-cultural and demographic setup of the area. New smear positive patients registered for treatment in two consecutive quarters during III quarter 2004 to III quarter 2005 formed the retrospective study cohort. Case control analysis was done including defaulted patients as "cases" and equal number of age and sex matched patients completing treatment as "controls". The presence and degree of association between default and determinant factors was computed through univariate and multivariate logistic regression analysis. Data collection was through patient interviews using pre-tested semi structured questionnaire and review of treatment related records. Information on a wide range of socio demographic and patient related factors was obtained. Among the 687 defaulted and equal numbers of patients in completed group, 389 and 540 patients respectively were satisfactorily interviewed. In the logistic regression analysis, factors independently associated with default were alcoholism [AOR-1.72 (1.23-2.44)], illiteracy [AOR-1.40 (1.03-1.92)], having other commitments during treatment [AOR-3.22 (1.1-9.09)], inadequate knowledge of TB [AOR-1.88(1.35-2.63)], poor patient provider interaction [AOR-1.72(1.23-2.44)], lack of support from health staff [AOR-1.93(1.41-2.64)], having instances of missed doses [AOR-2.56(1.82-3.57)], side effects to anti TB drugs [AOR-2.55 (1.87-3.47)] and dissatisfaction with services provided [AOR-1.73 (1.14-2.6)]. CONCLUSION: Majority of risk factors for default were treatment and provider oriented and rectifiable with appropriate interventions, which would help in sustaining the good programme performance.

RESUMO

We study the tunneling density of states (TDOS) for a junction of three Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid wires. We show that there are fixed points which allow for the enhancement of the TDOS, which is unusual for Luttinger liquids. The distance from the junction over which this enhancement occurs is of the order of x=v/(2omega), where v is the plasmon velocity and omega is the bias frequency. Beyond this distance, the TDOS crosses over to the standard bulk value independent of the fixed point describing the junction. This finite range of distances opens up the possibility of experimentally probing the enhancement in each wire individually.
