RESUMO

Cancer is a multifaceted genetic disease characterized by the acquisition of several essential hallmarks. Notably, certain cancers exhibit horizontal transmissibility, observed across mammalian species and diverse bivalves, the latter referred to as hemic neoplasia. Within this complex landscape, epigenetic mechanisms such as histone modifications and cytosine methylation emerge as fundamental contributors to the pathogenesis of these transmissible cancers. Our study delves into the epigenetic landscape of Cerastoderma edule, focusing on whole-genome methylation and hydroxymethylation profiles in heathy specimens and transmissible neoplasias by means of Nanopore long-read sequencing. Our results unveiled a global hypomethylation in the neoplastic specimens compared to their healthy counterparts, emphasizing the role of DNA methylation in these tumorigenic processes. Furthermore, we verified that intragenic CpG methylation positively correlated with gene expression, emphasizing its role in modulating transcription in healthy and neoplastic cockles, as also highlighted by some up-methylated oncogenic genes. Hydroxymethylation levels were significantly more elevated in the neoplastic samples, particularly within satellites and complex repeats, likely related to structural functions. Additionally, our analysis also revealed distinct methylation and activity patterns in retrotransposons, providing additional insights into bivalve neoplastic processes. Altogether, these findings contribute to understanding the epigenetic dynamics of bivalve neoplasias and shed light on the roles of DNA methylation and hydroxymethylation in tumorigenesis. Understanding these epigenetic alterations holds promise for advancing our broader understanding of cancer epigenetics.

BACKGROUND: Neoadjuvant chemotherapy is increasingly used to treat locally advanced (T3-4 Nx-2 M0) colon cancer due to its potential advantages over the standard approach of upfront surgery. The primary objective of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to analyse data from comparative studies to assess the impact of neoadjuvant chemotherapy on oncological outcomes. METHODS: A systematic review was conducted by searching the MEDLINE and Scopus databases. The search encompassed RCTs, propensity score-matched studies, and controlled prospective studies published up to 1 April 2023. As a primary objective, overall survival and disease-free survival were compared. As a secondary objective, perioperative morbidity, mortality, and complete resection were compared using the DerSimonian and Laird models. RESULTS: A total of seven studies comprising a total of 2120 patients were included. Neoadjuvant chemotherapy was associated with a reduction in the hazard of recurrence (HR 0.73, 95% c.i. 0.59 to 0.90; P = 0.003) and death (HR 0.67, 95% c.i. 0.54 to 0.83; P < 0.001) compared with upfront surgery. Additionally, neoadjuvant chemotherapy was significantly associated with higher 5-year overall survival (79.9% versus 72.6%; P < 0.001) and disease-free survival (73.1% versus 64.5%; P = 0.028) rates. No significant differences were observed in perioperative mortality (OR 0.97, 95% c.i. 0.28 to 3.33), overall complications (OR 0.95, 95% c.i. 0.77 to 1.16), or anastomotic leakage/intra-abdominal abscess (OR 0.88, 95% c.i. 0.60 to 1.29). However, neoadjuvant chemotherapy was associated with a lower risk of incomplete resection (OR 0.70, 95% c.i. 0.49 to 0.99). CONCLUSION: Neoadjuvant chemotherapy is associated with a reduced hazard of recurrence and death, as well as improved overall survival and disease-free survival rates, compared with upfront surgery in patients with locally advanced colon cancer.


Colon cancer is a common medical condition, the established treatment for which involves surgical resection followed by chemotherapy. However, a contemporary shift has led to the investigation of an alternative treatment sequence known as neoadjuvant chemotherapy, wherein chemotherapy precedes the surgery. This study critically assesses the efficacy of neoadjuvant chemotherapy compared with the standard treatment approach of surgery followed by chemotherapy. A systematic review of medical databases was undertaken to identify pertinent research publications on this subject matter. In total, seven studies encompassing data from 2120 patients were included in the analysis. Employing a meta-analysis methodology to synthesize the collective data from these studies, it was revealed that neoadjuvant chemotherapy was linked to higher rates of 5-year overall survival and disease-free survival, alongside a diminished hazard of both recurrence and death. Furthermore, no discernible differences in surgical complications or perioperative mortality were evident across the compared approaches.

BACKGROUND: Colon cancer (CC) is a public health concern with increasing incidence in younger populations. Treatment for locally advanced CC (LACC) involves oncological surgery and adjuvant chemotherapy (AC) to reduce recurrence and improve overall survival (OS). Neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) is a novel approach for the treatment of LACC, and research is underway to explore its potential benefit in terms of survival. This trial will assess the efficacy of NAC in LACC. METHODS: This is a multicentre randomised, parallel-group, open label controlled clinical trial. Participants will be selected based on homogenous inclusion criteria and randomly assigned to two treatment groups: NAC, surgery, and AC or surgery followed by AC. The primary aim of this study is to evaluate the 2-year progression-free survival (PFS), with secondary outcomes including 5-year PFS, 2- and 5-year OS, toxicity, radiological and pathological response, morbidity, and mortality. DISCUSSION: The results of this study will determine whether NAC induces a clinical and histological tumour response in patients with CCLA and if this treatment sequence improves survival without increasing morbidity and mortality. AIM: To describe the experiences and unmet medical care needs of a group of parents of children with developmental and epileptic encephalopathies (DEEs) caused by the SCN1A, KCNQ2, CDKL5, PCDH19, and GNAO1 variants. METHOD: A qualitative descriptive study was conducted. Participants were recruited using purposeful sampling. The inclusion criteria consisted of parents of children with DEEs caused by the SCN1A, KCNQ2, CDKL5, PCDH19, or GNAO1 variants, aged between 4 and 10 years old. In total, 21 parents were included. Data were acquired via researcher field notes and in-depth interviews. A thematic analysis was performed. RESULTS: Three main themes were identified: (1) managing symptoms: epileptic seizures are experienced with great uncertainty and are accompanied by cognitive, behavioural, and motor symptoms; (2) accepting treatment: the ideal medication regimen is a challenge and the decision to withdraw or start a new therapy falls on the parents; and (3) therapeutic relationship and medical care: behaviours related to the health professional can hinder the therapeutic relationship with the parents. Parents are apprehensive about going to the emergency department. INTERPRETATION: Professionals in emergency departments should acquire better knowledge of DEEs, welcome parents, and improve treatment for the children. The results of this study can serve as a starting point for a roadmap of relevant caregiver-reported outcomes in DEEs, to be implemented with new clinical trials and aetiology-targeted therapies. WHAT THIS PAPER ADDS: Epileptic seizures are the symptom that is most experienced and feared by parents. The medication regime has no defined protocol and the decision to withdraw a medication is frequently left to parents.

BACKGROUND: Substantial evidence supports the inverse association between adherence to healthy dietary patterns and frailty risk. However, the role of plant-based diets, particularly their quality, is poorly known. OBJECTIVE: To examine the association of two plant-based diets with incidence of physical frailty in middle-aged and older adults. DESIGN: Prospective cohort. SETTING: United Kingdom. SUBJECTS: 24,996 individuals aged 40-70 years, followed from 2009-12 to 2019-22. METHODS: Based on at least two 24-h diet assessments, we built two diet indices: (i) the healthful Plant-based Diet Index (hPDI) and (ii) the unhealthful Plant-based Diet Index (uPDI). Incident frailty was defined as developing ≥3 out of 5 of the Fried criteria. We used Cox models to estimate relative risks (RR), and their 95% confidence interval (CI), of incident frailty adjusted for the main potential confounders. RESULTS: After a median follow-up of 6.72 years, 428 cases of frailty were ascertained. The RR (95% CI) of frailty was 0.62 (0.48-0.80) for the highest versus lowest tertile of the hPDI and 1.61 (1.26-2.05) for the uPDI. The consumption of healthy plant foods was associated with lower frailty risk (RR per serving 0.93 (0.90-0.96)). The hPDI was directly, and the uPDI inversely, associated with higher risk of low physical activity, slow walking speed and weak hand grip, and the uPDI with higher risk of exhaustion. CONCLUSIONS: In British middle-age and older adults, greater adherence to the hPDI was associated with lower risk of frailty, whereas greater adherence to the uPDI was associated with higher risk.

To simulate a 200 nm photoexcitation in cyclobutanone to the n-3s Rydberg state, classical trajectories were excited from a Wigner distribution to the singlet state manifold based on excitation energies and oscillator strengths. Twelve singlet and 12 triplet states are treated using TD-B3LYP-D3/6-31+G** for the electronic structure, and the nuclei are propagated with the Tully surface hopping method. Using time-dependent density functional theory, we are able to predict the bond cleavage that takes place on the S1 surface as well as the ultrafast deactivation from the Rydberg n-3s state to the nπ*. After showing that triplet states and higher-lying singlet states do not play any crucial role during the early dynamics (i.e., the first 300 fs), the SA(6)-CASSCF(8,11)/aug-cc-pVDZ method is used as an electronic structure and the outcome of the non-adiabatic dynamic simulations is recomputed. Gas-phase ultrafast electron diffraction spectra are computed for both electronic structure methods, showing significantly different results.

CNDOL is an a priori, approximate Fockian for molecular wave functions. In this study, we employ several modes of singly excited configuration interaction (CIS) to model molecular excitation properties by using four combinations of the one electron operator terms. Those options are compared to the experimental and theoretical data for a carefully selected set of molecules. The resulting excitons are represented by CIS wave functions that encompass all valence electrons in the system for each excited state energy. The Coulomb-exchange term associated to the calculated excitation energies is rationalized to evaluate theoretical exciton binding energies. This property is shown to be useful for discriminating the charge donation ability of molecular and supermolecular systems. Multielectronic 3D maps of exciton formal charges are showcased, demonstrating the applicability of these approximate wave functions for modeling properties of large molecules and clusters at nanoscales. This modeling proves useful in designing molecular photovoltaic devices. Our methodology holds potential applications in systematic evaluations of such systems and the development of fundamental artificial intelligence databases for predicting related properties.

BACKGROUND: To our knowledge, only one study has examined the association between glucose variability (GV) and mortality in the elderly population with diabetes. GV was assessed by HbA1c, and a J-shaped curve was observed in the relationship between HbA1c thresholds and mortality. No study of GV was conducted during the COVID-19 pandemic and its lockdown. This study aims to evaluate whether GV is an independent predictor of all-cause mortality in patients aged 75 years or older with and without COVID-19 who were followed during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic and its lockdown measures. METHODS: This was a retrospective cohort study of 407,492 patients from the AGED-MADRID dataset aged 83.5 (SD 5.8) years; 63.2% were women, and 29.3% had diabetes. GV was measured by the coefficient of variation of fasting plasma glucose (CV-FPG) over 6 years of follow-up (2015-2020). The outcome measure was all-cause mortality in 2020. Four models of logistic regression were performed, from simple (age, sex) to fully adjusted, to assess the effect of CV-FPG on all-cause mortality. RESULTS: During follow-up, 34,925 patients died (14,999 women and 19,926 men), with an all-cause mortality rate of 822.3 per 10,000 person-years (95% confidence interval (CI), 813.7 to 822.3) (739 per 10,000; 95% CI 728.7 to 739.0 in women and 967.1 per 10,000; 95% CI 951.7 to 967.2 in men). The highest quartile of CV-FPG was significantly more common in the deceased group (40.1% vs. 23.6%; p < 0.001). In the fully adjusted model including dementia (Alzheimer's disease) and basal FPG, the odds ratio for mortality ranged from 1.88 to 2.06 in patients with T2DM and from 2.30 to 2.61 in patients with normoglycaemia, according to different sensitivity analyses. CONCLUSIONS: GV has clear implications for clinical practice, as its assessment as a risk prediction tool should be included in the routine follow-up of the elderly and in a comprehensive geriatric assessment. Electronic health records can incorporate tools that allow its calculation, and with this information, clinicians will have a broader view of the medium- and long-term prognosis of their patients.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), was declared a pandemic by the World Health Organization in March 2020. Since then, viral spread from humans to animals has occurred worldwide. Nonhuman primates (NHPs) have been found to be susceptible to reverse-zoonosis transmission of SARS-CoV-2, but initial research suggested that platyrrhine primates are less susceptible than catarrhine primates. Here we report the natural SARS-CoV-2 infection of a common woolly monkey (Lagothrix lagothricha) from a wildlife rehabilitation center in Ecuador. The course of the disease, the eventual death of the specimen, and the pathological findings are described. Our results show the susceptibility of a new platyrrhine species to SARS-CoV-2 and provide evidence for the first time of a COVID-19-associated death in a naturally infected NHP. The putative route of transmission from humans, and implications for captive NHPs management, are also discussed. Given that common woolly monkeys are at risk of extinction in Ecuador, further understanding of the potential threat of SARS-CoV-2 to their health should be a conservation priority. A One Health approach is the best way to protect NHPs from a new virus in the same way that we would protect the human population.

OBJECTIVES: The causes for persistently high and increasing maternal mortality rates in the United States have been elusive. METHODS: We use the shift in the ideological direction of the Republican and the Democratic parties in the 1960s, to test the hypothesis that fluctuations in overall and race-specific maternal mortality rates (MMR) follow the power shifts between the parties before and after the Political Realignment (PR) of the 1960s. RESULTS: Using time-series data analysis methods, we find that, net of trend, overall and race-specific MMRs were higher under Democratic administrations than Republican ones before the PR (1915-1965)-i.e., when the Democratic Party was a protector of the Jim Crow system. This pattern, however, changed after the PR (1966-2007), with Republican administrations underperforming Democratic ones-i.e., during the period when the Republican Party shifted toward a more economically and socially conservative agenda. The pre-post PR partisan shifts in MMRs were larger for Black (9.5%, p < . 01 ) relative to White mothers (7.4%, p < . 05 ) during the study period. CONCLUSIONS FOR PRACTICE: These findings imply that parties and the ideological direction of their agendas substantively affect the social determinants of maternal health and produce politized health outcomes.

Lithium, a critical natural resource integral to modern technology, has influenced diverse industries since its discovery in the 1950s. Of particular interest is lithium-7, the most prevalent lithium isotope on Earth, playing a vital role in applications such as batteries, metal alloys, medicine, and nuclear research. However, its extraction presents significant environmental and logistical challenges. This article explores the potential for lithium exploration on the Moon, driven by its value as a resource and the prospect of cost reduction due to the Moon's lower gravity, which holds promise for future space exploration endeavors. Additionally, the presence of lithium in the solar wind and its implications for material transport across celestial bodies are subjects of intrigue. Drawing from a limited dataset collected during the Apollo missions (Apollo 12, 15, 16, and 17) and leveraging artificial intelligence techniques and sample expansion through bootstrapping, this study develops predictive models for lithium-7 concentration based on spectral patterns. The study areas encompass the Aitken crater, Hadley Rima, and the Taurus-Littrow Valley, where higher lithium concentrations are observed in basaltic lunar regions. This research bridges lunar geology and the formation of the solar system, providing valuable insights into celestial resources and enhancing our understanding of space. The data used in this study were obtained from the imaging sensors (infrared, visible, and ultraviolet) of the Clementine satellite, which significantly contributed to the success of our research. Furthermore, the study addresses various aspects related to statistical analysis, sample quality validation, resampling, and bootstrapping. Supervised machine learning model training and validation, as well as data import and export, were explored. The analysis of data generated by the Clementine probe in the near-infrared (NIR) and ultraviolet-visible (UVVIS) spectra revealed evidence of the presence of lithium-7 (Li-7) on the lunar surface. The distribution of Li-7 on the lunar surface is non-uniform, with varying concentrations in different regions of the Moon identified, supporting the initial hypothesis associating surface Li-7 concentration with exposure to solar wind. While a direct numerical relationship between lunar topography and Li-7 concentration has not been established due to morphological diversity and methodological limitations, preliminary results suggest significant economic and technological potential in lunar lithium exploration and extraction.

Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA)-producing lactic acid bacteria (LAB) can be used as starters in the development of GABA-enriched functional fermented foods. In this work, four GABA-producing strains each of Lactococcus lactis and Streptococcus thermophilus species were isolated from cow's milk, and their phenotypic, technological, and safety profiles determined. Genome analysis provided genetic support for the majority of the analyzed traits, namely, GABA production, growth in milk, and the absence of genes of concern. The operon harboring the glutamate decarboxylase gene (gadB) was chromosomally encoded in all strains and showed the same gene content and gene order as those reported, respectively, for L. lactis and S. thermophilus. In the latter species, the operon was flanked (as in most strains of this species) by complete or truncated copies of insertion sequences (IS), suggesting recent acquisition through horizontal gene transfer. The genomes of three L. lactis and two S. thermophilus strains showed a gene encoding a caseinolytic proteinase (PrtP in L. lactis and PrtS in S. thermophilus). Of these, all but one grew in milk, forming a coagulum of good appearance and an appealing acidic flavor and taste. They also produced GABA in milk supplemented with monosodium glutamate. Two L. lactis strains were identified as belonging to the biovar. diacetylactis, utilized citrate from milk, and produced significant amounts of acetoin. None of the strains showed any noticeable antibiotic resistance, nor did their genomes harbor transferable antibiotic resistance genes or genes involved in toxicity, virulence, or pathogenicity. Altogether these results suggest that all eight strains may be considered candidates for use as starters or components of mixed LAB cultures for the manufacture of GABA-enriched fermented dairy products.

Abernethy syndrome (AS or extrahepatic portosystemic shunt) is an uncommon congenital malformation consisting of agenesis or hypoplasia of the portal vein (PV) in such a way that splanchnic venous blood drains directly into the systemic circulation through aberrant communications, resulting in a portosystemic shunt that bypasses the liver AS is an underdiagnosed condition with unknown incidence and complication rate given that symptoms are usually absent. AS identification is increasingly common because of improved imaging techniques, hence prognostic implications and clinical management need be understood. This editorial reviews the natural history of AS and its diagnostic-therapeutic implications, illustrating the process with a series of cases from our institution.

The current shortage of pediatric multivisceral donors accounts for the long time and mortality on the waiting list of pediatric patients. The use of donors after cardiac death, especially after the outbreak of normothermic regional perfusion, has increased in recent years for all solid organs except the intestine, mainly because of its higher susceptibility to ischemia-reperfusion injury. We present the first literature case of multivisceral donors after cardiac death transplantation in a 13-month-old recipient from a 2.5-month-old donor. Once exitus was certified, an extracorporeal membrane oxygenation circuit was established, cannulating the aorta and infrarenal vena cava, while the supra-aortic branches were clamped. The abdominal organs completely recovered from ischemia through normothermic regional perfusion (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation initially and beating heart later). After perfusion with the preservation solution, the multivisceral graft was uneventfully implanted. Two months later, the patient was discharged without any complications. This case demonstrates the possibility of reducing the time spent on the waiting list for these patients.

Rotavirus double-layered particles (DLPs) are studied in the gas phase with a high-resolution differential mobility analyzer (DMA). DLPs were transferred to 10 mM aqueous ammonium acetate, electrosprayed into the gas phase, converted into primarily singly charged particles, and DMA-analyzed. Up to seven slightly different conformations were resolved, whose apparently random, fast (minutes), and reversible interconversions were followed in real time. They sometimes evolved into just two distinct structures, with periods of one dominating over the other and vice versa. Differences between the DLP structures in solution and in the gas phase are clearly revealed by the smaller DLP diameter found here (60 versus 70 nm). Nevertheless, we argue that the multiple gas-phase conformers observed originate in as many conformations pre-existing in solution. We further hypothesize that these conformers correspond to incomplete DLPs having lost some of the VP6 trimer quintets surrounding each of the 12 5-fold axes. Instances of this peculiar loss have been previously documented by cryoelectron microscopy for the rotavirus Wa strain, as well as via charge detection mass spectrometry for five other rotavirus strains included in the RotaTec vaccine. Evidence of this loss systematically found for all 7 rotavirus types so far studied in aqueous ammonium acetate may be a special feature of this electrolyte.

BACKGROUND: There is mounting evidence that the Mediterranean diet prevents type 2 diabetes, but little is known about the role of Mediterranean lifestyles other than diet and among non-Mediterranean populations. This work aimed to examine the association between a comprehensive Mediterranean-type lifestyle and type 2 diabetes incidence in a British adult population. METHODS: We used data from 112,493 individuals free of cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes mellitus, aged 40-69 years, from the UK Biobank cohort, who were followed from 2009 to 2010 to 2021. The Mediterranean lifestyle was assessed through the 25-item MEDLIFE index, which comprises three blocks: (a) "Mediterranean food consumption", (b) "Mediterranean dietary habits", (c) "Physical activity, rest, social habits, and conviviality". Diabetes incidence was obtained from clinical records. Cox proportional-hazards regression models were used to analyze associations and adjusted for the main potential confounders. RESULTS: After a median follow-up of 9.4 years, 2,724 cases of type 2 diabetes were ascertained. Compared to the first quartile of MEDLIFE adherence, the hazard ratios (95% confidence interval) for increasing quartiles of adherence were 0.90 (0.82-0.99), 0.80 (0.72-0.89) and 0.70 (0.62-0.79) (p-trend < 0.001). All three blocks of MEDLIFE were independently associated with lower risk of diabetes. CONCLUSIONS: Higher adherence to the MEDLIFE index was associated with lower risk of type 2 diabetes in the UK Biobank. A Mediterranean-type lifestyle, culturally adapted to non-Mediterranean populations, could help prevent diabetes.

BACKGROUND: Despite a potentially curative treatment, the prognosis after upfront surgery and adjuvant chemotherapy for patients with resectable pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is poor. Modified FOLFIRINOX (mFOLFIRINOX) is a cornerstone in the systemic treatment of PDAC, including the neoadjuvant setting. Pharmacokinetic-guided (PKG) dosing has demonstrated beneficial effects in other tumors, but scarce data is available in pancreatic cancer. METHODS: Forty-six patients with resected PDAC after mFOLFIRINOX neoadjuvant approach and included in an institutional protocol for anticancer drug monitoring were retrospectively analyzed. 5-Fluorouracil (5-FU) dosage was adjusted throughout neoadjuvant treatment according to pharmacokinetic parameters and Irinotecan (CPT-11) pharmacokinetic variables were retrospectively estimated. RESULTS: By exploratory univariate analyses, a significantly longer progression-free survival was observed for patients with either 5-FU area under the curve (AUC) above 28 mcg·h/mL or CPT-11 AUC values below 10 mcg·h/mL. In the multivariate analyses adjusted by age, gender, performance status and resectability after stratification according to both pharmacokinetic parameters, the risk of progression was significantly reduced in patients with 5-FU AUC ≥28 mcg·h/mL [HR = 0.251, 95% CI 0.096-0.656; p = 0.005] and CPT-11 AUC <10 mcg·h/mL [HR = 0.189, 95% CI 0.073-0.486, p = 0.001]. CONCLUSIONS: Pharmacokinetically-guided dose adjustment of standard chemotherapy treatments might improve survival outcomes in patients with pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma.

Although several scores stratify venous thromboembolism (VTE) risk in solid tumors, hematologic malignancies (HM) are underrepresented. To develop an internal and external validation of a logistic regression model to predict VTE risk in hospitalized HM patients. Validation of the existing VTE predictive model was performed through a prospective case-control study in 496 hospitalized HM patients between December 2010 and 2020 at the Arnaldo Milián University Hospital, Cuba. The predictive model designed with data from 285 patients includes 5 predictive factors: hypercholesterolemia, tumoral activity, use of thrombogenic drugs, diabetes mellitus, and immobilization. The model was internally validated using bootstrap analysis. External validation was realized in a prospective cohort of 211 HM patients. The predictive model had a 76.4% negative predictive value (NPV) and an 81.7% positive predictive value (PPV) in the bootstrapping validation. The area under curve (AUC) in the bootstrapping set was 0.838. Accuracy was 80.1% and 82.9% in the internal and external validation, respectively. In the external validation, the model produced 89.7% of NPV, 67.7% of PPV, 74.6% of sensitivity, and 86.2% of specificity. The AUC in the external validation was 0.900. VTE predictive model is a reproducible and simple tool with good accuracy and discrimination.

A new set of six accurate ab initio potential energy surfaces (PESs) is presented for the first three singlet and triplet states of LiH2+ (1,21A', 11A'', 1,23A', and 13A'' states, where four of them are investigated for the first time), which have allowed new detailed studies gaining a global view on this interesting system. These states are relevant for the study of the most important reactions of lithium chemistry in the early universe. More than 45 000 energy points were calculated using the multi-reference configuration interaction level of theory using explicitly correlated methods (ic-MRCI-F12), and the results obtained for each individual electronic state were fitted to an analytical function. Using quasiclassical trajectories and considering the initial diatomic fragment in the ground rovibrational state, we have determined the integral cross sections for the H + LiH+(X2Σ+, C2Π) and H+ + LiH(X1Σ+, B1Π) reactions. In these calculations all available reaction channels were considered: the chemically most important H or H+ transfer/abstraction as well as atom exchange and collision induced dissociation for up to 1.0 eV of collision energy.

OBJECTIVE: frailty is a syndrome characterised by increased vulnerability to stressors, which manifests as higher death risk. Whilst guidelines for frailty management usually entails lifestyle modifications (e.g. physical exercise, diet), the mediating role of lifestyle on the excess mortality associated with frailty is unclear. This study estimates the death risk due to frailty that could be avoided with a healthy lifestyle in older adults. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: we analysed data from 91,906 British individuals aged ≥60 years recruited between 2006 and 2010. At baseline, frailty was identified according to Fried's phenotype, and a four-item Healthy Lifestyle Index (HLS) was calculated based on physical activity, diet, smoking and alcohol consumption. Mortality was ascertained from baseline through 2021. A mediation analysis under the counterfactual framework was performed adjusting for the main confounders. RESULTS: during a median follow-up of 12.5 years, 9,383 deaths occurred. Frailty was directly associated with all-cause mortality (hazard ratio: 2.30 [95% confidence interval {CI} 2.07, 2.54]), and inversely associated with the HLS (ß: -0.45 points [-0.49, -0.40]). The hazard ratio [95%CI] for the direct effect of frailty on mortality was 2.12 [1.91, 2.34], whilst for the indirect effect (mediated by HLS) was 1.08 [1.07, 1.10]. The mediated proportion of HLS on mortality was 13.55% [11.26, 16.20], with physical activity having the highest proportion amongst the four HLS items (7.69% [5.00, 10.40]). CONCLUSIONS: a healthy lifestyle partly mediates the association between frailty and mortality in British older adults. Since this was an exploratory mediation analysis, these results should be specifically tested in future research.
