Mpox is a zoonotic disease historically reported in Africa. Since 2003, limited outbreaks have occurred outside Africa. In 2022, the global spread of cases with sustained interhuman transmission and unusual disease features raised public health concerns. We explore the mpox outbreak in Rio de Janeiro (RJ) state, Brazil, in an observational study of mpox-suspected cases from June to December 2022. Data collection relied on a public healthcare notification form. Diagnosis was determined by MPXV-PCR. In 46 confirmed cases, anti-OPXV IgG was determined by ELISA, and seven MPXV genomes were sequenced. A total of 3095 cases were included, 816 (26.3%) with positive MPXV-PCR results. Most positive cases were men in their 30 s and MSM. A total of 285 (34.9%) MPXV-PCR+ patients live with HIV. Eight were coinfected with varicella-zoster virus. Anogenital lesions and adenomegaly were associated with the diagnosis of mpox. Females and individuals under 18 represented 9.4% and 5.4% of all confirmed cases, respectively, showing higher PCR cycle threshold (Ct) values and fewer anogenital lesions compared to adult men. Anti-OPXV IgG was detected in 29/46 (63.0%) patients. All analyzed sequences belonged to clade IIb. In RJ state, mpox presented a diverse clinical picture, represented mainly by mild cases with low complication rates and prominent genital involvement. The incidence in females and children was higher than usually reported. The observation of a bimodal distribution of Ct values, with few positive results, may suggest the need to review the diagnostic criteria in these groups.

Global air quality has deteriorated significantly in recent years due to large emissions from the transformation industry and combustion vehicles. This issue requires the development of portable, highly sensitive, and selective gas sensors. Nanostructured materials, including defective graphene, have emerged as promising candidates for such applications. In this work, we investigated the B-doped topological line defect in graphene as a sensing material for various gas molecules (CO, CO2, NO, and NH3) based on a combination of density functional theory and the non-equilibrium Green's function method. The electronic transport calculations reveal that the electric current can be confined to the line defect region by gate voltage control, revealing highly reactive sites. The B-doped topological line defect is metallic, favoring the adsorption of NO and NH3 over CO and CO2 molecules. We notice changes in the conductance after gas molecule adsorption, producing a sensitivity of 50% (16%) for NO (NH3). In addition, the recovery time for nitride gases was calculated for different temperatures and radiation frequencies. At 300 K the ultraviolet (UV) has a fast recovery time compared to the visible (VIS) one by about two orders of magnitude. This study gives an understanding of how engineering transport properties at the microscopic level (by topological line defect and chemical B-doping) leads to promising nanosensors for detecting nitride gas.

The objective of this study is to examine the effect of discontinuing wearing protective garments (absorbent pyjama pants - APP) in children with severe childhood nocturnal enuresis (NE). The study employs a multicenter, parallel, randomized controlled trial. Following a 4-week run-in period, participants were randomly allocated in a 2:1 group allocation to discontinue or continue using APP. The research was conducted across seven European pediatric incontinence centers. The study included treatment-naïve children aged 4-8 years with severe (7/7 wet nights per week) mono-symptomatic NE, who had used nighttime protection for at least 6 months prior to the study. The study consisted of a 4-week run-in period (± 7 days), where all children slept wearing APP (DryNites®). At week 4 (± 7 days), if meeting randomization criteria (7/7 wet nights during the last week of run-in), participants were randomized to continue to sleep in APP or to discontinue their use for a further 4 weeks, with the option of another 4 weeks in the extension period. The primary outcome was the difference between groups of wet nights during the last week of intervention. Quality of life (QoL) and sleep were secondary endpoints. In total, 105 children (43 girls and 62 boys, mean age 5.6 years [SD 1.13]) were randomized (no-pants group n = 70, pants group n = 35). Fifteen children (21%) in the no-pants group discontinued early due to stress related to the intervention. Children in the no-pants group experienced fewer wet nights compared to the pants group during the last week (difference 2.3 nights, 95% CI 1.54-3.08; p < 0.0001). In the no-pants group, 20% responded to the intervention, of whom 13% had a full response. Clinical improvement was detected within 2 weeks. Sleep and QoL were reported as negatively affected by APP discontinuation in the extension period but not in the core period.    Conclusion: A ~ 10% complete resolution rate was associated with discontinuing APP. While statistically significant, the clinical relevance is debatable, and the intervention should be tried only if the family is motivated. Response was detectable within 2 weeks. Discontinuing APP for 4-8 weeks was reported to negatively affect QoL and sleep quality. Human toxocariasis is a parasitic anthropozoonosis that is difficult to treat and control. A previous study carried out with Lactobacillus acidophilus ATCC 4356 revealed that the cell free supernatant (CFS) of this probiotic killed 100% of Toxocara canis larvae in vitro. The present study aimed to investigate the characteristics of the CFS of L. acidophilus ATCC 4356, which may be involved in its larvicidal effects on T. canis. L. acidophilus ATCC 4356 was cultured, and lactic and acetic acids present in the CFS were quantified by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The levels of pH and H2O2 were also analyzed. To assess the larvicidal effect of the CFS, this was tested pure and diluted (1:2 to 1:128) on T. canis larvae. High concentrations of lactic and acetic acids were detected in the CFS. The acidity of the pure CFS was observed at pH 3.8, remaining acidic at dilutions of 1:2 to 1:16. Regarding the in vitro larvicidal effect, 100% death of T. canis larvae was observed using the pure CFS and 1:2 dilution. Based on these results, it can be inferred that the presence of higher concentrations of organic acids and low pH of the medium contributed to the larvicidal activity of the CFS of L. acidophilus ATCC 4356. In addition, the maintenance of the larvicidal effect, even after dilution, suggests a greater chance of the larvicidal effect of this CFS against T. canis in vivo.

Human toxocariasis is a neglected anthropozoonosis with global distribution. Treatment is based on the administration of anthelmintics; however, their effectiveness at the tissue level is low to moderate, necessitating the discovery of new drug candidates. Several groups of synthetic compounds, including coumarin derivatives, have demonstrated bioactivity against fungi, bacteria, and even parasites, such as Dactylogyrus intermedius, Leishmania major, and Plasmodium falciparum. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of ten coumarin-derived compounds against Toxocara canis larvae using in vitro, cytotoxicity, and in silico tests for selecting new drug candidates for preclinical tests aimed at evaluating the treatment of visceral toxocariasis. The compounds were tested in vitro in duplicate at a concentration of 1 mg/mL, and compounds with larvicidal activity were serially diluted to obtain concentrations of 0.5 mg/mL; 0.25 mg/mL; 0.125 mg/mL; and 0.05 mg/mL. The tests were performed in a microculture plate containing 100 T. canis larvae in RPMI-1640 medium. One compound (COU 9) was selected for cytotoxicity analysis using J774.A1 murine macrophages and it was found to be non-cytotoxic at any concentration tested. The in silico analysis was performed using computational models; the compound presented adequate results of oral bioavailability. To confirm the non-viability of the larvae, the contents of the microplate wells of COU 9 were inoculated intraperitoneally (IP) into female Swiss mice at 7-8 weeks of age. This confirmed the larvicidal activity of this compound. These results show that COU 9 exhibited larvicidal activity against T. canis larvae, which, after exposure to the compound, were non-viable, and that COU 9 inhibited infection in a murine model. In addition, COU 9 did not exhibit cytotoxicity and presented adequate bioavailability in silico, similar to albendazole, an anthelmintic, which is the first choice for treatment of human toxocariasis, supporting the potential for future investigations and preclinical tests on COU 9.

Artepillin C is the most studied compound in Brazilian Green Propolis and, along with its acetylated derivative, displays neurotrophic activity on PC12 cells. Specific inhibitors of the trkA receptor (K252a), PI3K/Akt (LY294002), and MAPK/ERK (U0126) signaling pathways were used to investigate the neurotrophic mechanism. The expression of proteins involved in axonal and synaptic plasticity (GAP-43 and Synapsin I) was assessed by western blotting. Additionally, physicochemical properties, pharmacokinetics, and drug-likeness were evaluated by the SwissADME web tool. Both compounds induced neurite outgrowth by activating the NGF-signaling pathways but through different neuronal proteins. Furthermore, in silico analyses showed interesting physicochemical and pharmacokinetic properties of these compounds. Therefore, these compounds could play an important role in axonal and synaptic plasticity and should be further investigated.

Stevia urticifolia Thunb. is an underexploited herb possessing bioactive flavonoids, saponins, and terpenoids. The aim of this study was to examine the antiproliferative and toxicogenetic properties of the ethyl acetate extract from Stevia urticifolia aerial parts (EtAcSur) upon Artemia salina, erythrocytes, Allium cepa and sarcoma 180 cells and fibroblasts, as well as in vivo studies on mice to determine systemic, macroscopic, and behavioral alterations and bone marrow chromosomal damage. The assessment using A. salina larvae and mouse blood cells revealed LC50 and EC50 values of 68.9 and 113.6 µg/ml, respectively. Root growth and mitosis were inhibited by EtAcSur, and chromosomal aberrations were detected only at 100 µg/ml. EtAcSur exhibited potent concentration-dependent viability reduction of S180 and L-929 cells and antioxidant capacity employing ABTS• and DPPH•. No previous in vivo studies were performed before with the EtAcSur. Signals of acute toxicity were not observed at 300 mg/kg. Physiological and toxicological investigations at 25 and 50 mg/mg/day i.p. for 8 days did not markedly change body or organ relative weights, nor patterns of spontaneous locomotor and exploratory activities. In contrast, clastogenic effects on bone marrow were found at 50 mg/mg/day. EtAcSur was found to (1) produce toxicity in microcrustaceans, (2) capacity as free radical scavenger, (3) antimitotic, cytotoxic and clastogenic activties upon vegetal and mammalian cells, and (4) lethality on both tumor and normal murine cells indistinctly. Medical reports indicate a prevalence of pain in 50% of patients with cancer. In this context, this article investigated the antinociceptive activity of α-PHE using in vivo Sarcoma-180-induced hypernociception in mice to detail its mechanism(s) of antinociception under different conditions of treatment and tumor progression. Firsty, in vitro cytotoxic action was assessed using melanoma B-16/F-10 and S-180 murine cells and colorimetric MTT assays. For in vivo studies, acute treatment with α-PHE (6.25, 12.5, 25 and 50 mg/kg orally by gavage) was performed on the 1st day after S-180 inoculation. Subacute treatments were performed for 8 days starting on the next day (early protocol) or on day 8 after S-180 inoculation (late protocol). For all procedures, mechanical nociceptive evaluations were carried out by von Frey's technique in the subaxillary region peritumoral tissue (direct nociception) and in right legs of S-180-bearing mice (indirect nociception). α-PHE showed in vitro cytotoxic action on B-16/F-10 and S-180 (CI50 values of 436.0 and 217.9 µg/mL), inhibition of in vivo tumor growth (ranging from 47.3 to 82.7%) and decreased direct (peritumoral tissue in subaxillary region) and indirect (right leg) mechanical nociception in Sarcoma 180-bearing mice with early and advanced tumors under acute or subacute conditions of treatment especially at doses of 25 and 50 mg/kg. It improved serum levels of GSH as well as diminished systemic lipid peroxidation, blood cytokines (interleukin-1ß, -4, -6, and tumor necrosis factor-α). Such outcomes highlight α-PHE as a promising lead compound that combines antinociceptive and antineoplasic properties. Its structural simplicity make it a cost-effective alternative, justifying further mechanistic investigations and the development of pharmaceutical formulations. Moreover, the protocols developed and standardized here make it possible to use Sarcoma-180 hypernociception model to evaluate the capacity of new antinociceptive molecules under conditions of cancer-related allodynia.

Prior mineral scaling investigations mainly studied the effects of membrane surface properties rather than on the mineral properties and their impact on membrane permeability. In our study, mass, crystal growth orientation, and crystallinity of mineral precipitates on membranes, as well as their effects on membrane permeability have been investigated. Gypsum scaling tests on bare and bovine serum albumin (BSA)-conditioned membranes were conducted under different saturation indices. Results show that a longer scaling period was required for BSA-conditioned membranes to reach the same membrane permeate flux decline as bare membranes. Though the final reduced permeability was the same for both two membranes, the masses of the mineral precipitates on BSA-conditioned membranes were around two times more than those on bare membranes. Further mineral characterizations confirmed that different permeability decay rates of both types of the membrane were attributed to the differences in growth orientations rather than amounts of gypsum precipitates. Moreover, BSA-conditioned layers with high carboxylic density and specific molecular structure could stabilize bassanite and disrupt the oriented growth to inhibit the formation of needle-like gypsum crystals as observed on bare membranes, thus resulting in lower surface coverage with scales on membranes and alleviating the detrimental scaling effect on membrane permeability.

Breast cancer has the highest incidence and mortality in females, while prostate cancer has the second-highest incidence in males. Studies have shown that compounds from Brazilian green propolis have antitumor activities and can selectively inhibit the AKR1C3 enzyme, overexpressed in hormone-dependent prostate and breast tumors. Thus, in an attempt to develop new cytotoxic inhibitors against these cancers, three prenylated compounds, artepillin C, drupanin and baccharin, were isolated from green propolis to synthesize new derivatives via coupling reactions with different amino acids. All obtained derivatives were submitted to antiproliferative assays against four cancer cells (MCF-7, MDA MB-231, PC-3, and DU145) and two normal cell lines (MCF-10A and PNT-2) to evaluate their cytotoxicity. In general, the best activity was observed for compound6e, derived from drupanin, which exhibited half-maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) of 9.6 ± 3 µM and selectivity index (SI) of 5.5 against MCF-7 cells.In silicostudies demonstrated that these derivatives present coherent docking interactions and binding modes against AKR1C3, which might represent a possible mechanism of inhibition in MCF-7 cells.

Mauritia flexuosa L., traditionally known as "buriti", exhibits chemoprotective properties including antioxidant, antithrombotic, and nutritional actions. The aim of this study was to examine the oral anti-inflammatory activity of epicarp, mesocarp and endocarp obtained from M. flexuosa fruits using in vivo models to verify physiological benefits. The anti-edematogenic action was determined using phlogistic agents to induce paw edema and peritonitis. Pro-inflammatory cytokines, cell migration of peritoneal cells, histological changes, and abdominal swelling induced by acetic acid were also investigated. Carrageenan-induced edema was found to be decreased in mice pre-treated with epicarp by 50.8%, 53.7% and 39.2% and mesocarp by 41.8%, 65.3% and 71.9% after 2, 3, and 4 hr stimuli, respectively. Edema initiated by specific agents such as compound 48/80, histamine, serotonin, and prostaglandin E2 were also reduced, and better outcomes were found against histamine-induced edema, as evidenced by the decline at all times analyzed (30-120 min) with both doses of water extract of mesocarp (500 or 1000 mg/kg). Mesocarp-pre-treatment reduced inflammatory tissue parameters such as number of peritoneal leukocytes and TNF-α levels, but only epicarp diminished abdominal pain. In summary, M. flexuosa fruits, especially mesocarp, exhibited oral physiological benefits and capacity to modify biochemical and cellular steps in the inflammatory cascade, indicating that dietary supplements containing these fruits may be combined with pharmacological tools to ameliorate or prevent diseases of inflammatory origin.

The botanical source of Brazilian green propolis (BGP) is Baccharis dracunculifolia DC, which interacts not only with Apis mellifera, but also with galling insects. In the last decade, because of green propolis´ important biologic activities, the international demand for BGP overcame the production capacity, consequently, new approaches are required to increase this production. Hence, the understanding of the chemical ecology interactions of B. dracunculifolia with galls and bees in field conditions may provide insights to increase BGP's production. A "bee pasture" experiment aiming to better understand this plant-insect interaction was therefore performed. For that, 48 B. dracunculifolia individuals, being 24 females and 24 males, were cultivated and investigated for the following parameters: (1) phenolic and volatile compounds in both B. dracunculifolia leaves and green propolis, (2) environmental variables, (3) visiting rate by bees, (4) time of resin collection, and (5) number of galls. Regression analyses by independent linear mixed-effect models were run to correlate phenolic and volatile compounds concentration with the environmental and field variables. Significant differences in chemical profile and field variables were observed between male and female plants. Male plants showed higher infestation by galling insects while female plants showed higher number of visiting bees, time of resin collection and terpenes concentration, contributing to the differences observed in the field. The obtained results suggest that increasing the percentage of female B. dracunculifolia plants in the field may attract more bees and therefore enhance propolis production.

Bacterial diversity and aerobic catabolic competence of dioxin-degrading bacterial strains isolated from a polluted soil in the tropics were explored. Isolation of bacteria occurred after 12 months of consecutive enrichment, with dioxin congeners serving as the only sources of carbon and energy. Seventeen strains that were isolated were subsequently screened for dioxin metabolic competence. Among these isolates, five had unique amplified ribosomal DNA restriction analysis (ARDRA) patterns out of which two exhibiting good metabolic competence were selected for further investigation. The two strains were identified as Bacillus sp. SS2 and Serratia sp. SSA1, based on their 16S rRNA gene sequences. Bacterial growth co-occurred with dioxin disappearance and near stoichiometric release of chloride for one ring of the chlorinated congeners. The overall percentage removal of dibenzofuran (DF) by strain SS2 was 93.87%; while corresponding values for 2,8-dichlorodibenzofuran (2,8-diCDF) and 2,7-dichlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (2,7-diCDD) were 86.22% and 82.30% respectively. In the case of strain SSA1, percentage removal for DF, 2,8-diCDF and 2,7-diCDD were respectively 98.9%, 80.97% and 70.80%. The presence of two dioxin dioxygenase catabolic genes (dxnA1 and dbfA1) was investigated. Only the dbfA1 gene could be amplified in SS2 strain. Results further revealed that strain SS2 presented higher expression levels for the alpha-subunit of DF dioxygenase (dbfA1) gene during growth with dioxins. The expression level for dbfA1 gene was higher when growing on DF than on the other chlorinated analogs. This study gives an insight into dioxin degradation, with the catabolic potential of strains SS2 and SSA1 (an enteric bacterium) within the sub-Sahara Africa. It further shows that dioxin catabolic potential might be more prevalent in different groups of microorganisms than previously believed. Few reports have demonstrated the degradation of chlorinated congeners of dioxins, particularly from sub-Saharan African contaminated systems.

Green propolis is a resinous substance used in folk medicine given its anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and anti-ulcer effects. Our research group has already confirmed the gastroprotective activity of hydroalcoholic extract from green propolis (HEGP), as well as of its main isolated compounds. In continuity, this study evaluated the antioxidant mode of action involved in the preventive effect induced by HEGP, and its therapeutic gastric healing potential on installed ulcers. In addition, the healing effect of its main compound Artepillin C was also investigated. Acute and chronic ulcers were induced in rats by given ethanol or acetic acid, respectively. In acute model, the rats were orally pre-treated with vehicle (water plus 1% Tween, 1 mL/kg), HEGP (30-300 mg/kg), or carbenoxolone (200 mg/kg) 1 h prior the ulcer induction. In the chronic ulcer protocol, the rats received vehicle (water plus 1% Tween, 1 mL/kg), HEGP (300 mg/kg), or omeprazole (20 mg/kg) twice a day by 7 days, whereas groups of mice received vehicle (water plus 1% Tween, 1 mL/kg), Artepillin C (18 mg/kg), or ranitidine (20 mg/kg) twice a day by 4 days. Ulcerated tissue was collected for histological, histochemical, immunostaining, oxidative, and inflammatory analyses. The in vitro scavenger activity of HEGP was also verified using the DPPH assay. The oral pre-treatment with HEGP (100 and 300 mg/kg) prevented the gastric epithelial damage promoted by ethanol. Besides, HEGP (100 and 300 mg/kg) reduced SOD activity about 11% and 26%, respectively, and increased the activity of GST around 20% and CAT in 80%. HEGP (300 mg/kg) also reduced the production of reactive oxygen species, as well as lipoperoxidation levels in the ethanol-ulcerated tissue. In the acetic acid-induced chronic ulcer, the daily treatment with HEGP (300 mg/kg) accelerates the healing process by 71%. In this model, HEGP normalized SOD and CAT activity and increased GST activity by 109% when compared to non-ulcerated rats. In both models, the extract administration increased the mucin PAS staining and reduced the myeloperoxidase activity at the ulcer site. Moreover, the treatment with HEGP enhanced the PCNA immunostaining, but did not alter the concentration of collagen in the acetic acid-ulcerated tissue. The extract had a direct DPPH radical-scavenging ability (LogIC50: 0.56). Besides, as expected, HPLC analysis showed Artepillin C as a major compound and its administration at 18 mg/kg also accelerated the gastric healing ulcer process in mice. Our findings confirm that HEGP displays both gastroprotective and gastric healing properties, contributing to the validation of its popular use as preventive and therapeutic approaches. These actions occur through the increase in mucin production and the reestablishment of the oxidative balance due to a reduction in gastric inflammation.

Some factors have been associated with the etiology of chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), among them the Methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) C677T polymorphism. The aim of this study was to evaluate the role of MTHFR C677T polymorphism in CLL. A case-control study was conducted with 219 individuals from Brazilian central population. MTHFR C677T polymorphism was determined through PCR-RFLP followed by PAGE. The T allele frequence was higher in patients diagnosed with CLL than healthy subjects. However, when stratified by gender, the TT genotype was exclusively found in men diagnosed with CLL (p < 0.05). Adjusted multiple logistic regression analysis demonstrated that age was significantly linked to CLL predisposition (odds ratio = 1.08; p < 0.001). Studies evaluating the influence of genetic factors may provide insights on susceptibility for CLL.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have demonstrated the analgesic effects of ginger in different conditions, but evidence about its efficacy in migraine treatment is scarce. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the potential of ginger to improve acute migraine as an add-on strategy to standard treatment. METHODS: A double-blind placebo-controlled randomized clinical trial in the emergency room of a general hospital was conducted. Patients who sought medical care at the time of migraine attack were enrolled in this study. Only adults with episodic migraine (one to six migraine attacks per month) with or without aura were included. Sixty participants were randomized into two groups in which they received 400 mg of ginger extract (5% active ingredient) or placebo (cellulose), in addition to an intravenous drug (100 mg of ketoprofen) to treat the migraine attack. Patients filled a headache diary before, 0.5 h, 1 h, 1.5 h and 2 h after the medication. Pain severity, functional status, migraine symptoms and treatment satisfaction were also recorded. RESULTS: Patients treated with ginger showed significantly better clinical response after 1 h ( p = 0.04), 1.5 h ( p = 0.01) and 2 h ( p = 0.04). Furthermore, ginger treatment promoted reduction in pain and improvement on functional status at all times assessed. CONCLUSIONS: The addition of ginger to non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs may contribute to the treatment of migraine attack. This trial is registered at ClinicalTrials.gov (NCT02568644).

In the present study, we take advantage of the high thermal conductivity of graphene nanomaterials to develop a filter that can be easily cleaned via laser irradiation after biofouling occurs. In this investigation, the intensity of the laser beam and the amount of graphene used for membrane coating were investigated with Bacillus subtilis to achieve the most efficient removal of biofoulants. Thermographic measurements of glass microfiber filters coated with 500 µg of graphene showed an increase in temperature of about 328 ± 9 °C in about 6 s when the filters were irradiated with a 21.6 W/cm-2 laser intensity, which allowed successful removal of biofoulants. The thermal cleaning was effective for at least four filtrations without impacting the subsequent microbial removals, which were of ∼5 log for each filtration step followed by laser irradiation. Additionally, the permeability of the coated filters only dropped from 17.8 to 15.9 L/m2s after the laser cleaning procedure. The cleaning procedure was validated by using bayou water with a complex composition of biofoulants. Graphene-coated membranes coupled with laser irradiation afford a very fast and nonhazardous approach to clean biofoulants on graphene-coated membranes.

Adhesion of bacteria to interfaces is the first step in pathogenic infection, in biofilm formation, and in bioremediation of oil spills and other pollutants. Bacteria use a variety of surface structures to promote interfacial adhesion, with the level of expression of these structures varying in response to local conditions and environmental signals. Here, we investigated how overexpression of type 1 fimbriae, one such appendage, modifies the ability of Escherichia coli to adhere to solid substrates, via biofilm formation and yeast agglomeration, and to oil/water interfaces, via a microbial adhesion to hydrocarbon assay. A plasmid that enables inducible expression of E. coli MG1655 type 1 fimbriae was transformed into fimbriae-deficient mutant strain MG1655ΔfimA. The level of fimH gene expression in the engineered strain, measured using quantitative real-time PCR, could be tuned by changing the concentration of inducer isopropyl ß-d-1-thiogalactopyranoside (IPTG), and was higher than that in strain MG1655. Increasing the degree of fimbriation only slightly modified the surface energy and zeta potential of the bacteria, but enhanced their ability to agglomerate yeast cells and to adhere to solid substrates (as measured by biofilm formation) and to oil/water interfaces. We anticipate that the tunable extent of fimbriation accessible with this engineered strain can be used to investigate how adhesin expression modifies the ability of bacteria to adhere to interfaces and to actively self-assemble there.

Microbial remediation of metals can alleviate the concerns of metal pollution in the environment. The microbial remediation, however, can be a complex process since microbial metal resistance and biodiversity can play a direct role in the bioremediation process. This study aims to understand the relationships among microbial metal resistance, biodiversity, and metal sorption capacity. Meta-analyses based on 735 literature data points of minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) of Plantae, Bacteria, and Fungi exposed to As, Cd, Cr Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn showed that metal resistance depends on the microbial Kingdom and the type of heavy metal and that consortia are significantly more resistant to heavy metals than pure cultures. A similar meta-analysis comparing 517 MIC values from different bacterial genera (Bacillus, Cupriavidus, Klebsiella, Ochrobactrum, Paenibacillus, Pseudomonas, and Ralstonia) confirmed that metal tolerance depends on the type of genus. Another meta-analysis with 195 studies showed that the maximum sorption capacity is influenced by microbial Kingdoms, the type of biosorbent (whether consortia or pure cultures), and the type of metal. This study also suggests that bioremediation using microbial consortia is a valid option to reduce environmental metal contaminations.

Graphene's unique physical structure, as well as its chemical and electrical properties, make it ideal for use in sensor technologies. In the past years, novel sensing platforms have been proposed with pristine and modified graphene with nanoparticles and polymers. Several of these platforms were used to immobilize biomolecules, such as antibodies, DNA, and enzymes to create highly sensitive and selective biosensors. Strategies to attach these biomolecules onto the surface of graphene have been employed based on its chemical composition. These methods include covalent bonding, such as the coupling of the biomolecules via the 1-ethyl-3-(3-dimethylaminopropyl) carbodiimide hydrochloride and N-hydroxysuccinimide reactions, and physisorption. In the literature, several detection methods are employed; however, the most common is electrochemical. The main reason for researchers to use this detection approach is because this method is simple, rapid and presents good sensitivity. These biosensors can be particularly useful in life sciences and medicine since in clinical practice, biosensors with high sensitivity and specificity can significantly enhance patient care, early diagnosis of diseases and pathogen detection. In this review, we will present the research conducted with antibodies, DNA molecules and, enzymes to develop biosensors that use graphene and its derivatives as scaffolds to produce effective biosensors able to detect and identify a variety of diseases, pathogens, and biomolecules linked to diseases.
