RESUMO

An all-fiber temperature sensor employing intentional refractive index modulation is experimentally demonstrated. The sensor consists of four sections of polarization maintaining fiber (FPMF) sandwiched between multi-mode fiber (MMF). The stress region of two sections of polarization maintaining fibers (PMFs) is aligned and then anti-clockwise rotates one PMF in 10 deg angles while the other keeps still. Finally, the discharge proceeds. The remaining two PMFs are fusion spliced with the same method. Then the prepared FPMF-MMF structure is connected to the 3 dB coupler to construct a Sagnac loop. The temperature sensitivity reaches 1.49 nm/°C for a temperature range from 16°C to 55°C. The proposed temperature sensor with easy fabrication and good linearity in measuring temperature can be a promising candidate for various applications in environmental monitoring and industrial production.

RESUMO

Understanding the intention of community residents to seek help from mental health professionals (MHPs) is essential in targeting interventions that promote the prevention and treatment of depression. This study aimed to investigate the current status of Chinese community populations' depression help-seeking intentions from MHPs and explore factors influencing the intentions. Data were used from a survey conducted in a city in central China (n = 919 aged 38.68 ± 17.34, 72.1% female). Help-seeking intentions, help-seeking attitude, depression stigma, family function and depressive symptoms were measured. The total mean score on the intent to seek help from MHPs was 11.01 ± 7.78 and most of respondents were unwilling to seek professional help. Multiple linear regression showed that participants who were students, held a positive help-seeking attitude and had low personal stigma were more likely to have the intention to seek help from MHPs. It is necessary to utilize effective interventions to improve community residents' intention to seek professional help. These include promoting the importance of seeking professional assistance, optimizing the quality of mental health services and altering residents' prejudice to seeking professional help.

RESUMO

An interferometric bending sensor based on polarization-maintaining fiber (PMF) in combination with multi-mode fiber (MMF) is proposed and demonstrated experimentally. One end of MMF was fusion spliced to PMF, and the other was fusion spliced to the single mode fiber (SMF) pigtail of a 3 dB optical fiber coupler with a core offset. One stress zone in lead-out Panda type PMF was intentionally aligned and fusion spliced to the core of SMF to enhance mode coupling. A pronounced interference pattern with a fringe contrast of 28.1 dB was obtained, and a bending sensitivity of 18.66nm/m-1 was achieved experimentally. Such a bending sensor with easy fabrication could be a potential candidate for curvature measurements.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Mental illness is a major burden of disease worldwide. Community Mental Health Services (CMHS) are key to achieving community-based recovery for people with mental illness. In China, even though the community management of patients with mental illness is improving, the barriers faced by Community Mental Health Workers (CMHWs) are unclear. This study explores the difficulties and challenges in CMHS from the perspective of CMHWs. The results of this study may provide a practical basis for the training of CMHWs. METHODS: We carried out a qualitative study using an empirical phenomenological approach. Nine CMHWs were recruited from nine communities in Wuhan, Hubei Province, using purposive and snowball sampling. Face to face semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted with them from December 27 to 28, 2019. Interview recordings were converted to text content by Nvivo 11.0 software and analyzed using Colaizzi's phenomenological method. RESULTS: Three main themes were identified in this study: 1) Lack of role orientation leads to role ambiguity, 2) Failure to establish a therapeutic trust relationship with patients, and 3) Lack of communication and collaboration with various departments and peers. Seven sub themes were also identified. In these themes, CMHWs emphasized the importance of role clarity, therapeutic trusting relationships, and effective communication and coordination mechanisms. CONCLUSION: Although China has made great efforts on the road to improving the quality of CMHS, several salient issues regarding CMHWs must be addressed to optimize the quality of services provided by CMHWs. Community mental health institutions should help CMHWs overcome these difficulties, by maximizing its value and promoting the development of CMHS.

RESUMO

An improved acoustic pick-up is presented to enhance the acoustic sensing sensitivity of the straight line-type Sagnac fiber optic acoustic sensing system. A hollow elastomer cylinder is introduced into the system, and the optical fiber is tightly wound around the cylinder to construct the pick-up. The theoretical analysis was finished, and it showed that the improved pick-up will bring in an extra phase change and let the phase difference increase almost an order. The extra phase change will enhance the sensing sensitivity correspondingly. The titanium alloy elastic cylinder was designed and manufactured. The experiment system was built, and a sinusoidal acoustic signal was used as the sound source. The tests were taken during 100-1500 Hz, and the experimental study showed that the sensitivity was more than 130 mV/Pa when the pick-up was used as the acoustic sensing element, and compared to the fiber only system, the sensitivity was enhanced more than 71.2%. The improved pick-up will be helpful in sound recognition and expand the application area of the Sagnac acoustic sensing system.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To explore the abuse risk and related important determinants among older people with dementia in central China. METHODS: In this cross-sectional descriptive study, a sample of 158 family caregivers of older people with dementia was conveniently recruited from the Clinical Medicine Research Center of Dementia and Cognitive Impairment in Hubei Province, China. A social-demographic questionnaire, the Simplified Coping Style Questionnaire (SCSQ), the Social Support Rating Scale (SSRS), the Caregiver Burden Inventory (CBI), and the Caregiver Abuse Screen (CASE) were used for data collection. Descriptive statistics, Mann-Whitney U tests, Kruskal-Wallis tests, Spearman's rank correlation coefficient, and logistic regression analysis were used for the data analyses. RESULTS: The results demonstrate that 77.8% reported a risk of the abuse of older people with dementia. Moreover, positive and negative reactions, subjective support, and emotional, social, and physical burden were associated with family caregivers' abusive behaviours. CONCLUSION: This was a study conducted to examine the risk of the abuse of older people with dementia by family caregivers in central China. Elder abuse is prevalent among people with dementia. The present results confirmed the need to focus on family caregiver burden, coping styles, and social support in future interventions to prevent elder abuse.

RESUMO

Copper is indispensable to organisms, while its homeostatic imbalance may interference normal cellular physiological processes and even induce cell death. Artificially regulating cellular copper content provides a viable strategy to activate antineoplastic effect. In light of this, a copper ions homeostasis perturbator (CuP-CL) with cinnamaldehyde (Cin) packaging and thermosensitive liposome coating is reported. Following laser exposure, the doping of Cu2+ in polydopamine initiates enhanced photothermal therapy (PTT) and unlocks the outer layer of liposome, leading to the release of copper ions and Cin in tumor microenvironment with mild acidity and high glutathione (GSH) levels. The liberative Cu2+ can evoke cuproptosis and chemodynamic therapy (CDT). Meanwhile, leveraging the merits of H2O2 supply and GSH consumption, Cin serves as a tumor microenvironment regulator to amplify Cu2+ mediated cuproptosis and CDT. Additionally, the positive feedback effects of "laser-triggered PTT, PTT accelerates reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation, ROS amplifies lipid peroxide (LPO) accumulation, LPO mediates heat shock proteins (HSPs) clearance, down-regulated HSPs promote PTT" entailed the overall benefit to therapeutic outcomes. Both in vitro and in vivo results corroborate the remarkable antineoplastic performance of CuP-CL by the synergy of cuproptosis/CDT/PTT. Collectively, based on the three-pronged approach, this work plots a viable multimodal regimen for cancer therapy.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Data on loneliness among older adults in China during the COVID-19 pandemic are still scarce. This study aimed to examine the prevalence of loneliness and identify its associated factors among older Chinese adults during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: During the COVID-19 pandemic, 1268 older Chinese adults (aged 50+ years) were recruited through snowball sampling. The Chinese version of the validated six-item De Jong Gierveld Loneliness Scale was used to assess participants' recent feelings of loneliness, and a cut-off score of two or more was used to indicate the presence of loneliness. RESULTS: Loneliness was experienced by 37.9% of the participants in recent days. Factors significantly associated with loneliness included male sex (vs. female, OR: 1.62, p < .001), an education level of middle school and below (vs. college and above, OR: 1.50, p = .007), residing in the COVID-19 epicenter (vs. other provinces, OR: 1.48, p = .004), concern about contracting COVID-19 (OR: 1.68, p = .001), poor knowledge of COVID-19 (OR: 2.39, p = .012), and physical health problems (OR: 1.65, p < .001). DISCUSSION: Loneliness is common among older Chinese adults amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Targeted intervention programs may be more effective in reducing loneliness among older adults who are worried about contracting COVID-19, have poor COVID-19 knowledge, and experience physical health problems.

RESUMO

Background: Although there has been accumulating evidence on the elevated risk of depression in hypertensive patients, data regarding depressive disorders in older adults with hypertension and the interplay between factors associated with depression in this population are very limited. Disentangling the mutual influences between factors may help illuminate the pathways involved in the pathogenesis of the comorbidity of depression in hypertension. This study investigated the prevalence of depressive disorders in older Chinese adults with hypertension and examined major correlates of depressive disorders and the interactions between correlates by using classification tree analysis (CTA). Methods: In total, 374 older adults with essential hypertension were enrolled from seven urban and six rural primary care centers in Wuhan, China, and interviewed with the Chinese Mini-international Neuropsychiatric Interview 5.0. Family relationship and feelings of loneliness were assessed with standardized questions. A checklist was used to assess the presence of six major medical conditions: diabetes mellitus, heart disease, cerebrovascular disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, chronic gastric ulcer, and arthritis. Results: The 1-month prevalence rate of depressive disorders was 25.7%. The CTA model identified four major correlates of depressive disorders: loneliness was the most salient, followed by arthritis, family relationship, and heart disease. There were statistically significant interactions between loneliness and arthritis, loneliness and family relationship, and arthritis and heart disease. Conclusion: Over one out of every four older Chinese adults with hypertension suffer from depressive disorders. Collaborative multidisciplinary management services are needed to reduce the burden of depression in hypertensive older adults, which may include social work outreach services to promote family relationship, mental health services to relive loneliness, and primary care services to manage arthritis and heart disease.

RESUMO

Background: A low intention of professional help seeking hinders the effective treatment of depression. The factors are from the perspectives of the social, family, and individual; however, an understanding of how they interact to predict professional help-seeking intention (PHSI) is not clear. Objectives: The objectives of the study was to investigate PHSI toward depression in a Chinese community-dwelling population and construct a predictive model of the PHSI to explore the various factors involved. Methods: Stratified random sampling and Kish table methods were used to identify 2,000 community residents. Participants completed a series of questionnaires to measure general characteristics, PHSI, professional help-seeking attitude, depression stigma, depression knowledge, family function, and depression symptoms. Analyses included descriptive statistics and Pearson correlation analysis using SPSS 26.0 and a Structural Equation Model using Amos 22.0. Results: The score of the PHSI was 14.92 ± 9.574. Professional help-seeking attitude (r = 0.291, p < 0.001) and depression knowledge (r = 0.077, p = 0.002) were positively related to PHSI, while a negative correlation was found between stigma (r = -0.149, p < 0.001) and PHSI. The model of the PHSI indicated a good fit with a CMIN/DF = 2.740 and RESEA = 0.032. The total effect of the influencing factors on the PHSI was listed in the following order: professional help-seeking attitude (0.676) > stigma (-0.143) > depression knowledge (0.088) > depression symptoms (-0.009) > family function (0.005). The total effect of depression knowledge on PHSI included a direct negative effect (Beta = -0.266, p < 0.001) and an indirect positive effect (0.354) through professional help-seeking attitude and stigma. Also, depression knowledge was negatively associated with stigma (Beta = -0.153, p < 0.001). Depression symptoms were negatively associated with family function (Beta = -0.282, p < 0.001), depression knowledge (Beta = -0.252, p < 0.001), and stigma (Beta = -0.102, p < 0.001), indicating that people with less severe depression symptoms had good family function, depression knowledge, and higher stigma. Family function contributed a positive effect on depression knowledge directly (Beta = 0.145, p < 0.001) and a totally positive effect (0.033) on stigma. Conclusion: The PHSI toward depression is low among Chinese community residents. Professional help-seeking attitude, depression knowledge, and family functioning were facilitators of PHSI, and stigma and the severity of depression symptoms were barriers to PHSI. This study provides reference for the development of policies and guidelines to promote community residents to actively seek professional mental health help. Future policies can focus on multicollaboration among the government, mental health services, and families to increase the mental health resources, improve family functioning, enhance mental health literacy (MHL) of the public, and reduce depression stigma to ease the burden of this mental health issue.

RESUMO

A new single-polarization wavelength splitter based on the photonic crystal fiber (PCF) has been proposed. The full-vector finite-element method (FEM) is applied to analyze the single-polarization single-mode guiding properties. Splitting of two different wavelengths is realized by adjusting the structural parameters. The semi-vector three-dimensional beam propagation method is employed to confirm the wavelength splitting characteristics of the PCF. Numerical simulations show that the wavelengths of 1.3 µm and 1.55 µm are split for a fiber length of 10.7 mm with single-polarization guiding in each core. The crosstalk between the two cores is low over appreciable optical bandwidths.

RESUMO

In this study, we have described a facile process for fabrication of multifunctional composite hydrogel, in which sodium alginate was subjected to cross-linking using Ca2+ derived from ZnO/CaCO3/Ag composite nanospheres. The ZnO/CaCO3/Ag composite nanospheres were prepared based on our previously reported AA-[Zn(OH)4]2- composite nanosphere reaction conducted with silver and calcium salt following hydrothermal method, that led to the disintegration and release of Ca2+ under acidic conditions for application as a cross-linking agentto catalyze reaction with sodium alginate. Ag nanoparticles were well-dispersed in the multifunctional composite hydrogel, exhibiting excellent antibacterial activity. Additionally, polydopamine (PDA) with photothermal effect was also added to obtain a multifunctional composite hydrogel, and this hydrogel showed photothermal conversion performance and facilitated the release of Ag+ to achieve the rapid antibacterial effect. Simultaneously, PDA NPs could scavenge free radicals and improve cell adhesion. All such features would promote wound healing. The potent antimicrobial activity of the prepared composite hydrogel was demonstrated in the mouse model of S. aureus infection, and biosafety of the hydrogel was confirmed by conducting histopathological examination in the mouse model. This type of multifunctional hydrogel wound dressing with photosensitive and antibacterial properties presents with broad applications and prospects in antibacterial treatment.

RESUMO

Fenton-like reactions driven by manganese-based nanostructures have been widely applied in cancer treatment owing to the intrinsic physiochemical properties of these nanostructures and their improved sensitivity to the tumor microenvironment. In this work, ZnxMn1-xS@polydopamine composites incorporating alloyed ZnxMn1-xS and polydopamine (PDA) were constructed, in which the Fenton-like reactions driven by Mn ions can be tuned by a controllable release of Mn ions in vitro and in vivo. As a result, the ZnxMn1-xS@PDA exhibited good biocompatibility with normal cells but was specifically toxic to cancer cells. In addition, the shell thickness of PDA was carefully investigated to obtain excellent specific toxicity to cancer cells and promote synergistic chemodynamic and photothermal therapies. Overall, this work highlights an alternative strategy for fabricating high-performance, multifunctional composite nanostructures for a combined cancer treatment.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To explore the attitudes and factors in seeking professional psychological help among a Chinese community-dwelling population in order to promote positive help-seeking behaviors and better utilization of mental health services. METHODS: Using system and simple random sampling with Kish selection table methods, 912 community-dwelling residents were included in this study and asked about their attitudes toward seeking professional psychological help, depression symptoms, family function, depression literacy, help-seeking intention, and stigma. RESULTS: Scores on the Attitudes Toward Seeking Professional Psychological Help scale (ATSPPH-SF) indicated a neutral attitude toward openness to seeking treatment for psychological problems and a negative attitude toward the value and need to seek treatment with a negative total score. Multiple linear regression analysis showed that gender, age, social support (employment status and family function), depression literacy, stigma, and help-seeking intention are significantly associated with attitude toward seeking professional psychological help. CONCLUSION: The overall attitude toward seeking professional psychological help is not optimistic, thus, more efforts are needed to enhance understanding. Effective interventions including mental health education, training of mental health professionals, and popularizing the use of mental health services are essential, especially for the at-risk population.

RESUMO

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Migraine is a disabling neurovascular disorder, which increases risk of cardiovascular events and is a social burden worldwide. The present first-line anti-migraine medications can cause overwhelming side-effects, of which one includes the onset of cardiovascular disease. As one of the marketed Tibetan drugs, Ru-yi-Zhen-bao Pills (RYZBP) have been clinically used to treat cardiovascular disorders and as anti-migraine medication. However, there is currently no research exploring the anti-migraine actions of RYZBP. AIM OF THE STUDY: The current research was designed to assess the anti-migraine roles of RYZBP and explore the underlying mechanisms in a nitroglycerin (NTG)-induced migraine rat model trial. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 120 rats were randomly divided into the following six groups of 20 rats each: normal control group, model control group, positive control group, and RYZBP high/medium/low-dose groups (Ru-yi-Zhen-bao Pills; TH 1.00 g/kg, TM 0.50 g/kg and TL 0.25 g/kg). All rats were administered intragastrically for 7 consecutive days, which were subcutaneously injected with the NTG (10 mg/kg) after the last gavage (except in the normal control group). 3min after NTG treatment, 30 rats (5 rats from each group) were anesthetized and devoted to electroencephalogram(EEG) testing, which was used to evaluate the analgesic effect of RYZBP. One hour after NTG treatment, the rest of the 90 rats (15 rats from each group) were anesthetized and midbrain tissue sample was dissected. The dissection was then washed with physiological saline and collected. The histopathological changes in the periaqueductal gray(PAG) of 5 tissue samples were determined by aematoxylin-eosin (H&E) staining, as well as an estimation of substance P (SP) and neurokinin 1 receptor (NK1R) expression through immunohistochemically staining(IHC). Another 5 midbrain preparations were carried out to evaluate calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP), proenkephalin (PENK), SP, and cholecystokinin (CCK) expressions by real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR). The rest of the 5 brainstem tissues were then used to measure CCK, CGRP, and opioid peptide receptor (DORR) levels by western blotting(WB). RESULTS: In the EEG test, RYZBP (TM 0.50 g / kg) treatment transformed the EEG pain-wave of the NTG-induced migraine model rats in different time period. In the mechanism assay, compared with the model control group, RYZBP pretreatment reduced inflammatory cell infiltration, fibrosis and vacuolation of neuronal cells of PAG tissue seen by HE staining. IHC experiments further showed that RYZBPTM up-regulated SP expression levels and enhanced NK1R levels in the NTG-induced migraine rats (P < 0.05). Therapeutic administration of RYZBP also increased PENK mRNA expression and DORR protein level. Both RT-qPCR and western blotting trials indicated that RYZBP treatment significantly decreased CCK and CGRP expression levels (P < 0.01 or P < 0.05) in the NTG-induced migraine rats. CONCLUSIONS: RYZBP has the potential to be an effective anti-migraine treatment through suppressing the EEG pain-wave, increasing the levels of SP, PENK, DORR and reducing expression of CCK and CGRP. Mediating the PAG anti-nociceptive channel and inhibiting central sensitization were the two potential mechanisms, which offers further evidence for clinical therapy.

RESUMO

The Gandi capsule, a famous traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), is a hospital preparation that has been widely used in China for decades for the treatment of diabetes. The aim of this study is to compare the pharmacokinetics of four of the active components of Gandi capsules, which are the primary antidiabetic ingredients, on normal and diabetic Sprague-Dawley rats following oral administration of the capsules. Baicalin, wogonoside, wogonin, loganin and puerarin (internal standard) were prepared using methanol precipitation, and the separation of the five components was achieved through a ZORBAX Eclipse Plus C18 column by gradient elution using water (containing 0.1% formic acid) and acetonitrile as the mobile phase. After oral administration of Gandi capsules to the normal and diabetic rats, plasma was harvested and analyzed using liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry, and the primary pharmacokinetic parameters were calculated by DAS 2.0. Compared with the normal group, some pharmacokinetic parameters especially the AUC0-48 h of the four compounds significantly increased in the diabetic groups. The results demonstrated that the four constituents in normal and diabetic rats had obvious differences in some pharmacokinetic characteristics, suggesting that the rate and extent of drug metabolism were altered in diabetic animals. The results could be helpful for demonstrating the compatibility mechanism and providing clinical medication guidance for Gandi capsules.

RESUMO

Ciliary neurotrophic factor is the only known neurotrophic factor that can promote differentiation of hippocampal neural progenitor cells to glial cells and neurons in adult rats. This process is similar to spontaneous differentiation. Therefore, ciliary neurotrophic factor may be involved in spontaneous differentiation of neural stem cells. To verify this hypothesis, the present study isolated neural progenitor cells from adult male rats and cultured them in vitro. Results showed that when neural progenitor cells were cultured in the absence of mitogen fibroblast growth factor-2 or epidermal growth factor, they underwent spontaneous differentiation into neurons and glial cells. Western blot and immunocytochemical staining showed that exogenous ciliary neurotrophic factor strongly induced adult hippocampal progenitor cells to differentiate into neurons and glial cells. Moreover, passage 4 adult hippocampal progenitor cells expressed high levels of endogenous ciliary neurotrophic factor, and a neutralizing antibody against ciliary neurotrophic factor prevented the spontaneous neuronal and glial differentiation of adult hippocampal progenitor cells. These results suggest that the spontaneous differentiation of adult hippocampal progenitor cells is mediated partially by endogenous ciliary neurotrophic factor.

RESUMO

Ciliary neurotrophic factor (CNTF) is a pleiotropic cytokine that has been fully studied for its structure, receptor, and signaling pathways and its multiplex effects on neural system, skeletal muscle, and weight control. Recent research demonstrates that CNTF also plays an important role in neurogenesis and the differentiation of neural stem cells. In this article, we summarize the general characteristics of CNTF and its function on neural stem cells, which could be a valuable therapeutic strategy in treating neurological disorders.
