Here, straightforward and environmentally friendly fluorescent nitrogen doped carbon quantum dots (N-CQDs) with a high blue fluorescence emission at 455 nm are used for ultrasensitive Hg2+ ion detection. Folic acid and urea are used as carbon sources in the carbonization process. Two broad absorption bands at around 280 and 370 nm from UV-Vis spectrum and characteristic absorption peaks from infrared spectrum confirms the successful synthesis of the N-CQDs. Energy dispersive X-Ray analysis confirmed the elemental composition of the N-CQDs. Transmission electron microscopy showed the homogeneous globular morphology of the N-CQDs with an average particle size of 65 nm. Zeta potential measurement established the stability and surface charge of N-CQDs. Dynamic light scattering measurement showed the average size of N-CQDs. With the addition of Hg2+ ion to N-CQDs, the blue fluorescence emission is quenched. Moreover, the N-CQDs can be applied to real water sample such as pond water, river water, and tap water. The detection limit is approximately calculated to be 12 nM and linear range is 0-30 parts per billion.

The present study attempts to establish a correlation between the macromolecular parameters obtained from small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) analysis of pretreated sunn hemp (Crotalaria juncea) fibers with the dielectric and mechanical properties of their composites. Sunn hemp fiber is pretreated chemically by dewaxing and alkalization methods and physically by microwave irradiation. The treatment effect is structurally investigated using a correlation function from SAXS data and correlated with the mechanical as well as electrical properties of composites. The macromolecular parameters are observed to be influenced by pretreatment methods. Macromolecular structural modifications are seen in dewaxed fiber (DSHC), fiber treated with 10% of alkali soaked for 6 h (10K6C), and fiber microwave irradiated with 800 watts for 6 min (800W6M), improving the mechanical as well as electric properties of the reinforced composites.

RESUMO

Isolated cutaneous swelling can have varied etiologies. The clinical diagnosis is usually difficult, and a correct diagnosis always requires a pathological examination. Hereby, we report a case of linear keloidal morphea on the neck of an 18-year-old male who presented with an asymptomatic, firm lesion for 6 months. Histopathological examination was consistent with morphea. This case highlights the uncommon form of morphea in an unusual location, which can be misdiagnosed for numerous neoplastic conditions and for which simple histopathological evaluation can clinch the diagnosis.

Background: Respiratory symptoms may persist for several weeks following the initial coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infection. The aims and objectives were to assess the clinical symptoms, pulmonary functions, and radiological changes and to assess the cardio-vascular complications in post-COVID-19 patients. Methods: This observational study was conducted in the Department of Pulmonary Medicine in collaboration with the Department of Cardiology, SCBMCH, Cuttack, from March 2021 to August 2022 on 75 post-COVID-19 patients with respiratory symptoms from 4 weeks to 2 years after treatment for COVID-19 infection. Post-COVID patients having previous respiratory diseases were excluded from the study. Results: Among 75 patients, the most common age group was 18-30 years with a male-to-female ratio of 2.5:1. Based on O2 requirement, patients were divided into the mild symptomatic group and moderate to severe pneumonia group. The most common respiratory symptom was dyspnea, followed by cough with expectoration. Bilateral crepitations were found in 17% of cases. C-reactive protein (CRP) and D-dimer were increased in 38.6% and 32% of patients, respectively. 42.6% had abnormal chest X-ray, and the most common abnormal finding was reticular thickening. In spirometry, the restrictive pattern and mixed pattern were the predominant types documented in 49.3% and 13.3% of cases, respectively, which were significant in the moderate-severe group. Diffusion capacity of the lungs for carbon monoxide (DLCO) was performed in only 19 patients (mild group 13 and moderate-severe group 6). Twelve (63.2%) patients had abnormal DLCO. P- values were significant for RV (0.0482) and RV/TLC (0.0394). High-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) of the thorax was abnormal in 55.7% with the most common abnormalities as inter- and intra-lobular septal thickening. The left ventricular ejection fraction was preserved in all patients, with right atrium and right ventricle enlargement in 2.6% and pulmonary hypertension in 4.0% of participants. Conclusion: All post-COVID-19 patients having respiratory symptoms after recovery from acute COVID-19 may be referred by family care physicians to a dedicated post-COVID center for further evaluation, management, and early rehabilitation to decrease the morbidity in recovered patients. Persistent increased blood parameters like TLC, N/L ratio, RBS, CRP, and D-dimer seen in recovered post-COVID-19 patients. The long-term impact of CT findings on respiratory symptoms, pulmonary functions, and quality of life is unknown. Cardiovascular abnormalities in post-COVID-19 patients are infrequent.

An important sensation that warns of potential harm to a specific area of the body is pain. The prevalence of pain-related conditions globally is a significant and growing public health issue. Chronic pain affects an estimated 1.5 billion people worldwide, with prevalence rates varying by region and demographic factors. Along with diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and cancer, pain is among the most frequent medical diseases. Opioid analgesics are the mainstay of current pain therapies, which are ineffective. Opioid addiction and its potentially fatal side effects necessitate novel treatment strategies. Nanotechnology offers potential advantages in pain management by enabling targeted drug delivery, which can enhance the efficacy and reduce the side effects of analgesic medications. Additionally, nanoparticles can be designed to release drugs in a controlled manner, improving pain relief duration and consistency. This approach also allows for the delivery of therapeutics across biological barriers, potentially enhancing treatment outcomes for chronic pain conditions. Nanomedicine enables sensitive and focused treatments with fewer side effects than existing clinical pain medicines; it is worth exploring as a potential solution to these problems. Furthermore, medication delivery systems that use nanomaterials are being used to treat pain. Whether it's the distribution of a single medication or a combination of therapies, this review seeks to summarise the ways in which drug delivery systems based on nanomaterials can be utilised to successfully treat and alleviate pain. For the purpose of writing this paper, we consulted several online libraries, including Pubmed, Science Direct, Pubmed Prime, and the Cochrane Library, to gather fresh and up-to-date material. This overview delves into the ins and outs of pain's pathophysiology, the present state of pain treatment, potential new pain treatment targets, and the various initiatives that have been launched and are still in the works to address pain with nanotechnology. Recent developments in nanomaterials-based scavenging, gene therapy for pain aetiology, and nanoparticle-based medicine delivery for side effect reduction are highlighted. Analgesics have been further covered in our discussion on FDA-approved pharmaceuticals and clinical advancements.

INTRODUCTION: Acute kidney injury (AKI) is associated with increased health care utilization and higher costs. The Tackling AKI study was a multicenter, pragmatic, stepped-wedge cluster randomized trial that demonstrated a reduced hospital length of stay after implementation of a multifaceted AKI intervention (e-alerts, care bundle, and an education program). We tested whether this would result in cost savings. METHODS: A decision-analytic tree model from the payer perspective (National Health Service in the United Kingdom) was generated on which cost-effectiveness analyses were performed using a probabilistic sensitivity analysis, accounting only for direct medical costs. Clinical data from the Tackling AKI study were used as inputs and economic and utility data derived from relevant published literature. RESULTS: A total of 24,059 AKI episodes occurred during the study period, and in 18,887 admissions the patient was discharged alive. When all AKI stages were considered together, the cost per AKI admission was £5065 in the control arm and £4333 in the intervention arm, representing an incremental cost saving of £732 per admission with the intervention. Similar results were obtained when AKI stages were included as separate variables. Costs per quality-adjusted life year were £61,194 in the control group and £51,161 in the intervention group. At a willingness to pay threshold of £20,000 per quality-adjusted life year, the probability of the intervention being cost-effective compared with standard care was 90%. CONCLUSION: An organizational level approach to improve standards of AKI care reduces the cost of hospital admissions and is cost effective within the National Health Service in the United Kingdom.
