RESUMO

Underwater soundscape that spans a broad frequency band shows variability consistent with contributing noise sources and ocean environment. However, increased anthropogenic activities result in noise proliferation which can harm natural marine habitat. Continuous monitoring of background sound is useful to assess such spatio-temporal variability of soundscape. Standard noise level metrics, for instance, mean (µ), 90th percentiles (90P), standard deviation (σ), and kurtosis (ß), are constructed from noise field measured from three coastal stations in Eastern Arabian Sea. These metrics are found to be suitable to describe the soundscape variability with respect to season, frequency, and depth. Mean and 90P are used to compare the seasonal variations while kurtosis metrics are exercised to check the impulsive nature of composite signal. Histogram representation and probability density function (PDF) were utilized to analyze the spectral variation in soundscape with respect to season. Analysis was carried out at 500-ms temporal window in two spectral bands corresponding to traffic and wind noise fields. Seasonal analysis shows that in summer, mean noise level decreases as hydrophone depth increases, while in winter, deeper depths have higher mean value with the presence of seasonal surface duct. This implication of sound speed profile on noise field has also been confirmed using appropriate noise model.

RESUMO

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is an outstanding tool for the identification and characterization of mesenteric masses. Mesenteric masses may be solid or cystic. Most solid mesenteric masses are neoplastic, with sclerosing mesenteritis a notable exception. Entirely cystic mesenteric masses are typically benign. The excellent soft-tissue contrast afforded by MRI aids in narrowing the differential diagnosis of mesenteric masses. Accurately characterizing both solid and cystic mesenteric masses is important, as management ranges from active surveillance to medical management to surgical resection, depending on the tissue composition of the mass. An MRI-based approach to the differential diagnosis of mesenteric masses is presented.

RESUMO

Chronic lymphocytic inflammation with pontine perivascular enhancement responsive to steroids (CLIPPERS) is a rare and poorly understood pathology. In this case report we present a 51-year-old male that presented with neurological deficits with recent hypersensitivity pneumonitis. Imaging studies showed multiple punctate enhancing lesions involving the brainstem. After initiation of corticosteroids his symptoms improved, with a decrease in size of his lesions 6-months after his initial presentation. Due to its misdiagnosis, we propose the use of diagnostic criteria, described on this case report, for prompt treatment to avoid neurological sequelae.

BACKGROUND: Dental caries is a multifactorial disease in which microorganisms play an important role. Recently, herbs have been tried as mouthrinses to combat the side effects of chemical mouthrinses. The anticaries efficacy of Sodium fluoride, Tulsi leaf, and Black myrobalans fruit extracts on Streptococcus mutans (S. mutans) have been reported in the literature, but no comparative study has been done yet. AIM: This study aims to observe the change in the pH of saliva and to assess the efficacy of the herbal rinses-Tulsi and Black myrobalans on S. mutans count while comparing it with Sodium fluoride mouthrinse. METHODS: Herbal ethanolic extracts of Tulsi (4%) and Black myrobalans (2.5%) were prepared as mouthrinses and compared with sodium fluoride mouthrinse (0.05%). Sixty high caries risk patients were selected and allocated randomly into three groups [n = 20], categorized as Group A-Sodium fluoride mouthrinse, Group B-Tulsi mouthrinse, and Group C-Black myrobalans mouthrinse. They were instructed to rinse their mouth with their assigned mouthrinses for 7 days. Salivary samples were collected and sent to the laboratory at baseline, 1 h postrinsing and after 7th day of rinsing for determining the salivary pH and S. mutans count. The increase in pH and reduction of S. mutans were determined. The values obtained were tabulated and statistically analyzed. RESULTS: There was a significant increase in the salivary pH and reduction in S. mutans count after rinsing in all the three groups. Increase in salivary pH was more in the Sodium fluoride mouthrinse when compared to the experimental herbal groups (Group B and Group C). While S. mutans counts reduced more with Tulsi mouthrinse at 1 h postrinsing and after the 7th day of rinsing more reduction was seen in Black myrobalans mouthrinse group. CONCLUSION: The results of the study suggest that herbal mouthrinses could be tried as an adjunctive anticaries agent against dental caries causing microorganisms.

Congenital absence of the internal carotid artery is a rare occurrence. Even more infrequent are cases where the patient has a bilateral absence of the internal carotid arteries. Reported is a case of a 52-year-old woman who presented with optic nerve neuropathy, and was incidentally discovered to have a congenital bilateral absence of her internal carotid arteries. During computed tomography angiography imaging looking for cerebral venous thrombosis, related to her preexisting condition of bilateral elevated optic discs and residual left optic neuropathy, the findings were made. The absence of the arteries is not always recognizably symptomatic, with most findings being incidental through imaging studies only. This is because collateral flow allows for sufficient cerebral circulation. However, this condition puts such patients at higher risk for conditions such as aneurysms and subsequently strokes where the collateral flow exists.

RESUMO

Schwannomas are slow growing, encapsulated neoplasms that arise from the nerve sheath. A vast majority of these benign neoplasms occur in the head and neck region, most commonly involving the 8th cranial nerve. Schwannomas arising from the base of tongue are very rare and, thus, can easily escape the list of differential diagnosis for a posterior tongue mass. A systematic approach is recommended for diagnosis of a posterior tongue mass, with neoplastic, infectious, and congenital categories. We report a case of a 24-year-old female, who presented with pressure sensation in the throat. On imaging, she was found to have a mass in the right posterior tongue with follow-up biopsy results yielding a schwannoma. Characteristic imaging features for various possible etiologies of a posterior tongue mass are also discussed.

RESUMO

Space maintainers have been used in Pediatric Dentistry for many years. The use of these appliances, however, in terms of indications, contraindications, design and construction has gained little attention from researchers. This paper highlights the construction of a new technique of fabrication of band and loop space maintainer. The advantages of this new Direct technique or Single sitting technique over the conventional technique are discussed.
