RESUMO

FeNi oxides/hydroxides are the best performing catalysts for oxidizing water at basic pH. Consequently, their improvement is the cornerstone to develop more efficient artificial photosynthetic systems. During the last 5 years different reports have demonstrated an enhancement of their activity by engineering their structures via: (1) modulation of the number of oxygen, iron and nickel vacancies; (2) single atoms (SAs) doping with metals such as Au, Ir, Ru and Pt; and (3) modification of their surface using organic ligands. All these strategies have led to more active and stable electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution rection (OER). In this Concept, we critically analyze these strategies using the most relevant examples.

The burden of depression is increasing worldwide, specifically in older adults. Unhealthy dietary patterns may partly explain this phenomenon. In the Spanish PREDIMED-Plus study, we explored (1) the cross-sectional association between the adherence to the Prime Diet Quality Score (PDQS), an a priori-defined high-quality food pattern, and the prevalence of depressive symptoms at baseline (cross-sectional analysis) and (2) the prospective association of baseline PDQS with changes in depressive symptomatology after 2 years of follow-up. After exclusions, we assessed 6612 participants in the cross-sectional analysis and 5523 participants in the prospective analysis. An energy-adjusted high-quality dietary score (PDQS) was assessed using a validated FFQ. The cross-sectional association between PDQS and the prevalence of depression or presence of depressive symptoms and the prospective changes in depressive symptoms were evaluated through multivariable regression models (logistic and linear models and mixed linear-effects models). PDQS was inversely associated with depressive status in the cross-sectional analysis. Participants in the highest quintile of PDQS (Q5) showed a significantly reduced odds of depression prevalence as compared to participants in the lowest quartile of PDQS (Q1) (OR (95 %) CI = 0·82 (0·68, 0·98))). The baseline prevalence of depression decreased across PDQS quintiles (Pfor trend = 0·015). A statistically significant association between PDQS and changes in depressive symptoms after 2-years follow-up was found (ß (95 %) CI = -0·67 z-score (-1·17, -0·18). A higher PDQS was cross-sectionally related to a lower depressive status. Nevertheless, the null finding in our prospective analysis raises the possibility of reverse causality. Further prospective investigation is required to ascertain the association between PDQS and changes in depressive symptoms along time.

A cobalt complex bearing a κ-N3 P2 ligand is presented (1+ or CoI (L), where L is (1E,1'E)-1,1'-(pyridine-2,6-diyl)bis(N-(3-(diphenylphosphanyl)propyl)ethan-1-imine). Complex 1+ is stable under air at oxidation state CoI thanks to the π-acceptor character of the phosphine groups. Electrochemical behavior of 1+ reveals a two-electron CoI /CoIII oxidation process and an additional one-electron reduction, which leads to an enhancement in the current due to hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) at Eonset =-1.6 V vs Fc/Fc+ . In the presence of 1 equiv of bis(trifluoromethane)sulfonimide, 1+ forms the cobalt hydride derivative CoIII (L)-H (22+ ), which has been fully characterized. Further addition of 1 equiv of CoCp*2 (Cp* is pentamethylcyclopentadienyl) affords the reduced CoII (L)-H (2+ ) species, which rapidly forms hydrogen and regenerates the initial CoI (L) (1+ ). The spectroscopic characterization of catalytic intermediates together with DFT calculations support an unusual bimolecular homolytic mechanism in the catalytic HER with 1+ .

Molecular water oxidation catalysis is a field that has experienced an impressive development over the past decade mainly fueled by the promise of generation of a sustainable carbon neutral fuel society, based on water splitting. Most of these advancements have been possible thanks to the detailed understanding of the reactions and intermediates involved in the catalytic cycles. Today's best molecular water oxidation catalysts reach turnover frequencies that are orders of magnitude higher than that of the natural oxygen evolving center in photosystem II. These catalysts are based on Ru complexes where at some stage, the first coordination sphere of the metal center becomes seven coordinated. The key for this achievement is largely based on the use of adaptative ligands that adjust their coordination mode depending on the structural and electronic demands of the metal center at different oxidation states accessed within the catalytic cycle. This Review covers the latest and most significant developments on Ru complexes that behave as powerful water oxidation catalysts and where at some stage the Ru metal attains coordination number 7. Further it provides a comprehensive and rational understanding of the different structural and electronic factors that govern the behavior of these catalysts.

Water oxidation to dioxygen is one of the key reactions that need to be mastered for the design of practical devices based on water splitting with sunlight. In this context, water oxidation catalysts based on first-row transition metal complexes are highly desirable due to their low cost and their synthetic versatility and tunability through rational ligand design. A new family of dianionic bpy-amidate ligands of general formula H2 LNn- (LN is [2,2'-bipyridine]-6,6'-dicarboxamide) substituted with phenyl or naphthyl redox non-innocent moieties is described. A detailed electrochemical analysis of [(L4)Cu]2- (L4=4,4'-(([2,2'-bipyridine]-6,6'-dicarbonyl)bis(azanediyl))dibenzenesulfonate) at pH 11.6 shows the presence of a large electrocatalytic wave for water oxidation catalysis at an η=830 mV. Combined experimental and computational evidence, support an all ligand-based process with redox events taking place at the aryl-amide groups and at the hydroxido ligands.

Statin therapy response is highly variable. Variants of lipid metabolism genes and statin pharmacokinetic modulators could play a role, however, the impact of most of these variants remains unconfirmed. A prospective and multicenter study included 252 patients was carried out in order to assess, according to achievement of LDL-C or non-HDL-C therapeutic targets and quantitative changes in lipid profiles, the impact of CETP, ABCA1, CYP2D6, and CYP2C9 gene candidate variants on the simvastatin, atorvastatin, and rosuvastatin response. Patients carrier ABCA1 rs2230806 and CYP2D6*3 variants are less likely to achieve therapeutic lipid targets (p = 0.020, OR = 0.59 [0.37, 0.93]; p = 0.040, OR = 0.23 [0.05, 0.93], respectively). Among CETP variants, rs708272 was linked to a 10.56% smaller reduction in LDL-C with rosuvastatin (95% CI = [1.27, 19.86] %; p = 0.028). In contrast, carriers of rs5882 had a 13.33% greater reduction in LDL-C (95% CI = [25.38, 1.28]; p = 0.032). If these findings are confirmed, ABCA1, CYP2D6, and CETP genotyping could be used to help predict which statin and dosage is appropriate in order to improve personalized medicine.

We report the effect of replacing the pyridine group in the chelating trz Ir-water oxidation catalysts by a benzoxazole and a thiazole moiety. We have also evaluated if the presence of bidentate ligands is crucial for high activities and to avoid the decomposition into undesired heterogeneous layers. The catalytic performance of these benzoxazole/thiazole-triazolidene Ir-complexes in water oxidation was studied at variable pH using either CAN (pH = 1) or NaIO4 (pH = 5.6 and 7). Electrocatalytic experiments indicated that while CAN-mediated water oxidation led to catalyst heterogeneization irrespective of the triazolylidene substituent, periodate as sacrificial oxidant preserved a homogeneously active species. Repetitive additions of sacrificial oxidant indicates higher integrity of the Ir-complex with a thiazole-substituted triazolylidene compared to ligands featuring a benzoxazole as chelating donor or no chelating group at all. Rigid chelation of the thiazole group was also established from stability measurements under highly acidic, oxidizing, and high ionic strength conditions.

OBJECTIVES: To know the influence of the stapled line height (SLH) in the recurrence rate and the postoperative disturbances in stapled anopexy (SA) for the treatment of hemorrhoids. DESIGN: Simple randomized double-blind controlled clinical trial. Randomization with closed-envelope technique in two groups with two different SLH. SETTING: Colorectal Surgery Unit. Department of General Surgery. Hospital de Mataró (Barcelona, Spain). PARTICIPANTS: 119 patients with the diagnosis of symptomatic third- and fourth-grade hemorrhoids were included. INTERVENTION: SA was performed with two different SLH: group A, 4.5 cm (58 patients) and group B, 6 cm (61 patients) from the external anal verge. Postoperative disturbances were evaluated by a colorectal surgeon who was blind for the randomization and pain was measured (visual analogic scale) one week and 3 months after surgery. Mean operative time, number of hemostatic stitches performed and resected mucosal area were considered as well. Mean follow-up was 11.05 ± 1.6 years. RESULTS: Differences between the operative time and resected mucosa-submucosa area were not found. The patients of group A needed a significantly higher number of stitches for intraoperative bleeding control along the stapled line. We did not found differences between both groups in terms of postoperative pain neither anorectal disturbances. At the follow-up, persistence of symptomatology was 10.41% in group A and 10.71% in group B, without statistically significance. Neither mortality nor undesirable effects occurred in the series. CONCLUSIONS: SLH do not influence the recurrence rate neither the postoperative evolution in SA. TRIAL REGISTRATION: Clinical Trials NCT03383926.

BACKGROUND: LDL-C lowering is the main measure in cardiovascular disease prevention but a residual risk of ischemic events still remains. Alterations of lipoproteins, specially, increase in small dense LDL (sdLDL) particles are related to this risk. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the potential use of sdLDL cholesterol concentration (sdLDL-C) isolated by an easy precipitation method and to assess the impact of a set of clinical and biochemical variables determined by NMR on sdLDL concentration. METHODS: sdLDL-C and NMR lipid profile were performed in 85 men samples. Association among them was evaluated using Pearson coefficients (rxy ). A multivariate regression was performed to identify the influence of NMR variables on sdLDL-C. RESULTS: A strong association between sdLDL-C and LDLLDL-P (rxy  = 0.687) and with LDL-Z (rxy  = -0.603) was found. The multivariate regression explained a 56.8% in sdLDL-C variation (P = 8.77.10-12). BMI, ApoB, triglycerides, FFA, and LDL-Z showed a significant contribution. The most important ones were ApoB and LDL-Z; a 1nm increase (LDL-Z) leads to decrease 126 nmol/L in sdLDL-C. CONCLUSION: The association between sdLDL-C, LDL-Z, and LDL-P is clear. From a large number of variables, especially LDL-Z and apoB influence on sdLDL-C. Results show that the smaller the LDL size, the higher their cholesterol concentration. Therefore, sdLDL-C determination by using this easy method would be useful to risk stratification and to uncover cardiovascular residual risk.

Among-individual behavioral differences (i.e. animal personality) are commonly observed across taxa, although the underlying, causal mechanisms of such differences are poorly understood. Animal personality has been correlated with physiological functions as well as fitness-related traits. Variation in many aspects of monoamine systems, such as metabolite levels and gene polymorphisms, has been linked to behavioral variation. Therefore, here we experimentally investigated the potential role of monoamines in explaining individual variation in personality, using two common pharmaceuticals that respectively alter the levels of serotonin and dopamine in the brain: fluoxetine and ropinirole. We exposed three-spined sticklebacks, a species that shows animal personality, to either chemical alone or to a combination of the two chemicals, for 18 days. During the experiment, fish were assayed at four time points for the following personality traits: exploration, boldness, aggression and sociability. To quantify brain gene expression on short- and longer-term scales, fish were sampled at two time points. Our results show that monoamine manipulations influence fish behavior. Specifically, fish exposed to either fluoxetine or ropinirole were significantly bolder, and fish exposed to the two chemicals together tended to be bolder than control fish. Our monoamine manipulations did not alter the gene expression of monoamine or stress-associated neurotransmitter genes, but control, untreated fish showed covariation between gene expression and behavior. Specifically, exploration and boldness were predicted by genes in the dopaminergic, serotonergic and stress pathways, and sociability was predicted by genes in the dopaminergic and stress pathways. These results add further support to the links between monoaminergic systems and personality, and show that exposure to monoamines can causally alter animal personality.

Flavonoids, found in almost all fruits and vegetables, belong to a class of plant secondary metabolites with a polyphenolic structure and have properties with health-improving potential. However, few experimental studies on the effects of flavonoids have been carried out in vivo after external application and using pure compounds. Aiming to fill this gap, in this study we tested the topical anti-inflammatory and antiallergic activity of three flavonoids of high purity, naringenin, naringenin chalcone, and quercetin, in mouse models. The topical anti-inflammatory effects were assessed against arachidonic acid- (AA) and tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate- (TPA) induced ear edema. The anti-inflammatory effect of naringenin against ear edema was noticeable at a 1% dose in the AA model and at half this dose in the TPA model. Quercetin (1.3%) did not exert any topical anti-inflammatory activity in the AA model, but its inhibitory effect in the TPA model was similar to that of naringenin (2%); in contrast, naringenin chalcone was more active against the AA-induced than TPA-induced inflammation. The flavonoid effect on IgE-mediated passive cutaneous anaphylaxis was also studied in mice, both intravenously and topically. Naringenin, naringenin chalcone, and quercetin all showed strong antiallergic activity after intravenous dosing (0.02%) and when applied topically (2%). The results of this study suggest that the flavonoids naringenin, naringenin chalcone, and quercetin may be useful alternatives for the topical treatment of inflammatory and allergic skin disorders.

The Ru complex [RuII (bda-κ-N2 O2 )(N-NH2 )2 ] (1; bda2- =2,2'-bipyridine-6,6'-dicarboxylate, N-NH2 =4-(pyridin-4-yl)aniline) was used as a synthetic intermediate to prepare new RuII and RuIII bda complexes that contain NO+ , MeCN, or H2 O ligands. In acidic solution complex 1 reacts with an excess of NO+ (generated in situ from sodium nitrite) to form a new Ru complex in which the aryl amine ligand N-NH2 is transformed into a diazonium salt [N-N2+ =4-(pyridin-4-yl)benzenediazonium)] together with the formation of a new Ru(NO) moiety in the equatorial zone, to generate [RuII (bda-κ-N2 O)(NO)(N-N2 )2 ]3+ (23+ ). Here the bda2- ligand binds in a κ-N2 O tridentate manner with a dangling carboxylate group. Similarly, complex 1 can also react with a coordinating solvent, such as MeCN, at room temperature to give [RuII (bda-κ-N2 O)(MeCN)(N-NH2 )2 ] (3). In acidic aqueous solutions, a related reaction occurs in which solvent water coordinates to the Ru center to form {[RuII {bda-κ-(NO)3 }(H2 O)(N-NH3 )2 ](H2 O)n }2+ (42+ ) and is strongly hydrogen-bonded with additional water molecules in the second coordination sphere. Furthermore, under acidic conditions the aniline ligands are also protonated to form the corresponding anilinium cationic ligands N-NH3+ . Additionally, the one-electron oxidized complex {[RuIII {bda-κ-(NO)3.5 }(H2 O)(N-NH3 )2 ](H2 O)n }3+ (53+ ) was characterized, in which the fractional value in the κ notation indicates the presence of an additional contact to the pseudo-octahedral geometry of the Ru center. The coordination modes of the complexes were studied in the solid state and in solution through single-crystal XRD, X-ray absorption spectroscopy, variable-temperature NMR spectroscopy, and DFT calculations. While κ-N2 O is the main coordination mode for 23+ and 3, an equilibrium that involves isomers with κ-N2 O and κ-NO2 coordination modes and neighboring hydrogen-bonded water molecules is observed for 42+ and 53+ .

In this work we have prepared and characterized two Ru complexes that contain the pentadenatate tda2- ligand (tda2- = [2,2':6',2″-terpyridine]-6,6″-dicarboxylate) that occupies the equatorial positions and two monodentate ligands aqua and/or dmso that occupy the axial positons: [trans-RuIII(tda-κ-N3O)(OH2ax)2]+, 3III(OH2)2+, and [RuII(tda-κ-N3O)(dmso)(OH2ax)], 4II. The latter is a useful synthetic intermediate for the preparation of Ru-tda complexes with different axial ligands. The two complexes have been characterized in the solid state by single-crystal XRD and by elemental analysis. In solution, complex 4II has been characterized by NMR spectroscopy as well as the one-electron reduction of complex 3III(OH2)2+. The electrochemical properties of 3III(OH2)2+ and 4II have been assessed by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV). Complex 3III(OH2)2+ shows the presence of four redox waves that are assigned to the VI/V, V/IV, IV/III, and III/II redox couples. The variation of the redox potentials is analyzed as a function of pH and is graphically presented as a Pourbaix diagram. Finally, the redox potentials displayed by both 3III(OH2)2+ and 4II are compared to related complexes previously reported in the literature and rationalized on the basis of the electron donating or withdrawing capacity of the auxiliary ligands as well as with regard to their ability to undergo seven-coordination at high oxidation states.

Background: There is limited, and inconsistent, data on the prospective association between physical activity and surrogate markers of adiposity in older adults. We aim to determine the prospective association of leisure time physical activity (LTPA) with body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC) and the incidence of obesity. Methods: This prospective analysis included 7144 individuals with a mean age of 67 ± 6.2 years, from the PREvención con DIeta MEDiterránea (PREDIMED) study. BMI and WC were measured and LTPA was recorded using the Minnesota Leisure Time Physical Activity Questionnaire. Exposure and outcome variables were calculated as cumulative average of repeated measurements. Results: Total LTPA was inversely associated (P < 0.001) with BMI and WC. The difference in BMI and WC between extreme quintiles of LTPA (Q1-Q5) was 2.1 kg/m2 (95% confidence interval (CI) 1.68; 2.49, P < 0.001) and 4.8 cm (CI 2.28; 7.25, P < 0.001), respectively. Low-intensity LTPA was inversely associated with BMI but not with WC, while moderate/vigorous LTPA showed an inverse relationship with BMI and WC. The hazard of general and abdominal obesity incidence decreased across quintiles of total and moderate/vigorous LTPA (P < 0.001 for both), whereas low-intensity LTPA was inversely associated with the incidence of general obesity (P < 0.001). Conclusion: LTPA was inversely associated with BMI, WC and incidence of general and abdominal obesity. The finding that low-intensity LTPA was inversely related to BMI and the incidence of obesity is of particular importance because this level of physical activity could be a feasible option for many older adults.

Energy has been a central subject for human development from Homo erectus to date. The massive use of fossil fuels during the last 50 years has generated a large CO2 concentration in the atmosphere that has led to the so-called global warming. It is very urgent to come up with C-neutral energy schemes to be able to preserve Planet Earth for future generations to come and still preserve our modern societies' life style. One of the potential solutions is water splitting with sunlight (hν-WS) that is also associated with "artificial photosynthesis", since its working mode consists of light capture followed by water oxidation and proton reduction processes. The hydrogen fuel generated in this way is named as "solar fuel". For this set of reactions, the catalytic oxidation of water to dioxygen is one of the crucial processes that need to be understood and mastered in order to build up potential devices based on hν-WS. This tutorial describes the different important aspects that need to be considered to come up with efficient and oxidatively robust molecular water oxidation catalysts (Mol-WOCs). It is based on our own previous work and completed with essential contributions from other active groups in the field. We mainly aim at describing how the ligands can influence the properties of the Mol-WOCs and showing a few key examples that overall provide a complete view of today's understanding in this field.

A hybrid photoanode based on a molecular water oxidation precatalyst was prepared from TiO2-protected n- or p+-Si coated with multiwalled carbon nanotubes (CNT) and the ruthenium-based water oxidation precatalyst [RuIV(tda)(py-pyr)2(O)], 1(O) (tda2- is [2,2':6',2″-terpyridine]-6,6″-dicarboxylato and py-pir is 4-(pyren-1-yl)-N-(pyridin-4-ylmethyl)butanamide). The Ru complex was immobilized by π-π stacking onto CNTs that had been deposited by drop casting onto Si electrodes coated with 60 nm of amorphous TiO2 and 20 nm of a layer of sputtered C. At pH = 7 with 3 Sun illumination, the n-Si/TiO2/C/CNT/[1+1(O)] electrodes exhibited current densities of 1 mA cm-2 at 1.07 V vs NHE. The current density was maintained for >200 min at a constant potential while intermittently collecting voltammograms that indicated that over half of the Ru was still in molecular form after O2 evolution.

BACKGROUND: The APOE Christchurch (APOECh) is a rare variant (c.543C>A) in codon 154. It was first described in an E2 patient with type III dyslipidemia, and thus initially called E2Ch. Its prevalence and the lipid profile of carriers remain unclear. METHODS: E2, E3, and E4 screening for the APOE gene was performed by PCR-RFLP. The rare APOECh variant was firstly found after detecting an unexpected 109 base-pair band in the high-resolution agarose gel electrophoresis leading to a genotype misinterpretation: the presence of APOECh alters the restriction-bands pattern. To confirm the Ch variant, a second PCR-RFLP method was specifically designed to detect this variant and Sanger sequencing was also performed for all positive samples. RESULTS: We identified 12 unrelated subjects for the APOECh among a cohort of 2,560 patients: nine E3/E3Ch, two E3Ch/E4, and one E2/E3Ch or E2Ch/E3. The frequency of the variant is 0.4% in our study population, which represents the highest percentage published so far. If there is a 109 bp band, it is easy to recognize the presence of the variant. However, in APOE routine genotyping, an E4Ch allele is indistinguishable from a standard E3. Therefore, E4Ch alleles might be underrepresented in the results. CONCLUSION: We recommend APOE exon 4 sequencing to unequivocally detect the common three variants E2, E3, and E4 and the rare variants as well, to find out the real role they play in atherosclerosis and to estimate its real frequency which is nowadays unclear, in part by the small number of cases identified.

INTRODUCTION: Sleeve gastrectomy (SG) has become a technique in its own right although a selective or global indication remains controversial. The weight loss data at 5 years are heterogeneous. The aim of the study is to identify possible prognostic factors of insufficient weight loss after SG. METHODS: A SG retrospective multicenter study of more than one year follow-up was performed. Failure is considered if EWL>50%. Univariate and multivariate study of Cox regression were performed to identify prognostic factors of failure of weight loss at 1, 2 and 3 years of follow up. RESULTS: A total of 1,565 patients treated in 29 hospitals are included. PSP per year: 70.58±24.7; 3 years 69.39±29.2; 5 years 68.46±23.1. Patients with EWL<50 (considered failure): 17.1% in the first year, 20.1% at 3 years, 20.8% at 5 years. Variables with influence on the weight loss failure in univariate analysis were: BMI>50kg/m2, age>50years, DM2, hypertension, OSA, heart disease, multiple comorbidities, distance to pylorus> 4cm, bougie>40F, treatment with antiplatelet agents. The reinforcement of the suture improved results. In multivariate study DM2 and BMI are independent factors of failure. CONCLUSION: The SG associates a satisfactory weight loss in 79% of patients in the first 5 years; however, some variables such as BMI>50, age>50, the presence of several comorbidities, more than 5cm section of the pylorus or bougie>40F can increase the risk of weight loss failure.

RESUMO

A new decadentate dinucleating ligand containing a pyridazine bridging group and pyridylic arms has been synthesized and characterized by analytical and spectroscopic techniques. Four new dinuclear cobalt complexes featuring this ligand have been prepared and thoroughly characterized both in the solid state (X-ray diffraction) and in solution (1D and 2D NMR spectroscopy, ESI-MS, and electrochemical techniques). The flexible but stable coordination environment provided by the ligand scaffold when coordinating Co in different oxidation states is shown to play a crucial role in the performance of the set of complexes when tested as catalysts for the photochemical hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and chemical oxygen reduction reaction (ORR).

Three distinct functionalisation strategies have been applied to the in,in-[{Ru(II)(trpy)}2(µ-bpp)(H2O)2](3+) (trpy=2,2':6',2''-terpyridine, bpp=bis(pyridine)pyrazolate) water-oxidation catalyst framework to form new derivatives that can adsorb onto titania substrates. Modifications included the addition of sulfonate, carboxylate, and phosphonate anchoring groups to the terpyridine and bis(pyridyl)pyrazolate ligands. The complexes were characterised in solution by using 1D NMR, 2D NMR, and UV/Vis spectroscopic analysis and electrochemical techniques. The complexes were then anchored on TiO2-coated fluorinated tin oxide (FTO) films, and the reactivity of these new materials as water-oxidation catalysts was tested electrochemically through controlled-potential electrolysis (CPE) with oxygen evolution detected by headspace analysis with a Clark electrode. The results obtained highlight the importance of the catalyst orientation with respect to the titania surface in regard to its capacity to catalytically oxidize water to dioxygen.
