PURPOSE: Recently, treatment of Hinchey III diverticulitis by laparoscopic peritoneal lavage has been questioned. Moreover, long-term outcomes have been scarcely reported. Primary outcome was to determine the recurrence rate of diverticulitis after a successful laparoscopic peritoneal lavage in Hinchey III diverticulitis. Secondary outcomes were identification of associated risk factors for recurrence and elective sigmoidectomy rate. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study in a tertiary referral center was performed. Patients with Hinchey III diverticulitis who underwent a successful laparoscopic peritoneal lavage between June 2006 and December 2019 were eligible. Diverticulitis recurrence was analyzed according to the Kaplan-Meier and log-rank test, censoring for death, loss of follow-up, or elective sigmoid resection in the absence of recurrence. Risk factors for recurrence were identified using Cox regression analysis. RESULTS: Sixty-nine patients had a successful laparoscopic peritoneal lavage (mean age: 63 years; 53.6% women). Four patients had an elective sigmoid resection without recurrences. Recurrence rate was 42% (n = 29) after a median follow-up of 63 months. The cumulative global recurrence at 1, 3, and 5 years was 30% (95% CI, 20-43%), 37.5% (95% CI, 27-51%), and 48.9% (95% CI, 36-64%), respectively. Smoking (HR, 2.87; 95% CI, 1.22-6.5; p = 0.016) and episodes of diverticulitis prior to laparoscopic peritoneal lavage (HR, 5.2; 95% CI, 2.11-12.81; p < 0.001) were independently associated with an increased risk of recurrence. CONCLUSIONS: Diverticulitis recurrence after a successful laparoscopic peritoneal lavage is high, decreasing after the first year of follow-up. Smoking and previous episodes of acute diverticulitis independently increase the risk of new episodes of diverticulitis.

Mitochondria modify their function and morphology to satisfy the bioenergetic demand of the cells. Cancer cells take advantage of these features to sustain their metabolic, proliferative, metastatic, and survival necessities. Understanding the morphological changes to mitochondria in the different grades of triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) could help to design new treatments. Consequently, this research explored mitochondrial morphology and the gene expression of some proteins related to mitochondrial dynamics, as well as proteins associated with oxidative and non-oxidative metabolism in metastatic and non-metastatic TNBC. We found that mitochondrial morphology and metabolism are different in metastatic and non-metastatic TNBC. In metastatic TNBC, there is overexpression of genes related to mitochondrial dynamics, fatty-acid metabolism, and glycolysis. These features are accompanied by a fused mitochondrial morphology. By comparison, in non-metastatic TNBC, there is a stress-associated mitochondrial morphology with hyperfragmented mitochondria, accompanied by the upregulated expression of genes associated with the biogenesis of mitochondria; both of which are characteristics related to the higher production of reactive oxygen species observed in this cell line. These differences between metastatic and non-metastatic TNBC should provide a better understanding of metastasis and contribute to the development of improved specific and personalized therapies for TNBC.

Heart failure (HF) is a widespread clinical condition that affects numerous individuals globally and is a leading cause of hospitalization, particularly in the elderly population. Despite efforts to manage HF using various pharmacological and nonpharmacological interventions, mortality and hospitalization rates remain alarmingly high. Preventive vaccination has emerged as a key measure endorsed by cardiology societies for reducing the morbidity and mortality associated with HF. This study undertakes an extensive review of existing literature to explore the role of vaccination in managing HF, focusing specifically on the immunological pathways involved and potential benefits offered by immunization in this context. This article highlights the role of various vaccines, including influenza, pneumococcal, and COVID-19 vaccines, in reducing HF-related hospitalization, mortality, and overall disease burden. Additionally, this article will delve into specific vaccines that have shown promise in HF management, such as influenza, pneumococcal, and COVID-19 vaccines, along with the rationale for their use, clinical trials, meta-analyses, and real-world data supporting their effectiveness in patients with HF. This article also considers potential challenges and obstacles to widespread vaccination in individuals with HF, which include vaccine hesitancy, accessibility, and adverse events related to vaccines.

La colitis fulminante por Clostridium difficile se caracteriza por el desarrollo de una inflamación aguda severa del colon, asociada a toxicidad sistémica, y es la forma más grave de colitis aguda con una mortalidad de hasta el 80%. Presentamos el caso de un varón de 45 años que acude al servicio de urgencias por dolor abdominal agudo, diarrea y fiebre. La tomografía computarizada mostró engrosamiento parietal difuso circunferencial del colon, incluido el recto, asociado con estriación de los tejidos circundantes y formaciones ganglionares. En las horas siguientes el paciente evolucionó con empeoramiento del estado general, aumento de los requerimientos de inotrópicos y acidosis láctica. Se decide laparotomía de urgencia y se realiza colectomía total. La colitis fulminante por Clostridium difficile es una enfermedad potencialmente mortal. La labilidad de la patología obliga en muchas ocasiones a tomar una rápida conducta, por lo que representa una urgencia médico-quirúrgica siendo el tiempo crucial.

Clostridium difficile´s fulminant colitis is characterized by the development of severe acute inflammation of the colon, associated with systemic toxicity. Fulminant colitis is the most serious form of acute colitis with a mortality of up to 80%. We present the case of a 45-year-old man who presented to the emergency department with acute abdominal pain, diarrhea and fever. Computed tomography showed circumferential diffuse parietal thickening of the colon, including the rectum, associated with striation of the surrounding tissues and ganglionic formations. In the following hours the patient evolved with worsening of the general condition, increased inotropic requirements and lactic acidosis. Emergency laparotomy was decided and total colectomy was performed. Fulminant Clostridium difficile colitis is a potentially deadly disease. The lability of the pathology in many occasions forces quick decision making, therefore fulminant colitis represents a medical surgical emergency being time crucial.

BACKGROUND: Public health pandemics, such as COVID-19, not only impact the physical health and wellbeing of communities but also often have far-reaching effects on their social, psychological, environmental, and economic welfare. The coronavirus pandemic has highlighted the significant inequities experienced among those who are Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC), especially in the areas of housing instability, unemployment, and debt accrual. This study investigates the socioeconomic impacts of COVID-19 on residents of the Canal neighborhood ("The Canal"), a low-income Latinx community in Marin County, California. This study also uplifts mitigation strategies already underway to facilitate post-pandemic recovery efforts. METHODS: This study utilized a mixed-methods, community participatory approach in which community leaders from a local nonprofit, Canal Alliance, administered a survey assessing the impact of COVID-19 on Canal residents. Additionally, community stakeholders including nonprofits, small businesses, and public officials were interviewed, and their field notes were analyzed through exploratory open coding. RESULTS: On a macro level, the data showed that Canal residents were severely impacted by COVID-19 in the form of massive job loss (61.2% of respondents were unemployed or underemployed) as well as financial stress related to eviction, housing instability, and debt accrual (78.8% of respondents struggled to cover rent and often had to borrow money from friends and family). CONCLUSIONS: In spite of the severe socioeconomic impacts of COVID-19 on The Canal, there is a significant opportunity for recovery and growth because of an overwhelming investment by residents, community-based organizations, and public officials to support those who have been financially impacted by the pandemic. Some key areas of policy focus include expansion of affordable housing, pandemic-resistant workforce development, and restructuring of social services to increase accessibility. This report will explore recommendations related to strategic funding of community-based programs as well as short-term and long-term solutions for economic recovery.

Onchocerciasis has been declared eliminated in Ecuador and surveillance measures are of great interest. In this study, we examined the infectivity rates of Simulium exiguum by Onchocerca volvulus in previously hyperendemic areas in Esmeraldas province of Ecuador. These areas had previously undergone mass administration of ivermectin, which led to the interruption of transmission in 2009 and the certification of elimination in 2014. The study included three communities in Río Cayapas and one in Río Canandé, and a total of 2,950 adult S. exiguum were collected in 2018. We used quantitative polymerase chain reaction with O. volvulus O-150 plasmid control DNA to analyze 59 pools. Our findings revealed that the infectivity rates were zero, indicating that the transmission of O. volvulus remained suspended in the area.

Sea turtles perform various ecological services in several marine environments and are considered architects of the marine landscape. At present, they are endangered species due to anthropogenic threats, pollution and degradation of marine habitats. These impacts make it urgent to increase protection and conservation efforts. Protective actions include the rescue and rehabilitation of injured individuals as a result of their interactions with humans and other threats. Environmental enrichment (EE) is a series of techniques and methods aimed to improve the welfare of animals in captivity and/or under rehabilitation. It uses external stimuli to enhance their psychological and physiological wellbeing to promote natural abilities and behaviors. These may increase the survival chances of rehabilitated animals upon release in the wild. This review presents data of studies where EE has been applied during the rehabilitation processes of different species of sea turtles, and its effect on welfare improvement during captivity/rehabilitation and on survival after release into nature. Technologies such as satellite tags are an important means to determine rehabilitation success and survival of injured individuals from endangered species after release into the wild, as they allow tracking and monitoring of such individuals, and determine their location in areas used by their natural populations for feeding or breeding.

The association between some bacterial infections and colon cancer is well documented. The most described is Streptococcus bovis infection. Another bacteria related to intestinal neoplasms is Clostridium septicum. We present the case of a 62-year-old man who consulted for abdominal pain associated with diarrhea and fever. A computed tomography scan of the abdomen and pelvis was performed, which revealed thickening of the cecum walls with an apparent break in continuity at its free edge. An exploratory laparotomy was performed which confirmed the presence of peritonitis and cecal perforation. A right hemicolectomy and terminal ileostomy were performed. The histopathological study revealed the presence of signet ring cell type adenocarcinoma associated with ischemia. The blood cultures results demonstrated the presence of C. septicum. The patient died due to fulminant sepsis.

BACKGROUND: The coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic had a substantial impact on surgical training programs. This study describes the teaching strategies and outcomes in 3 different times of the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic through a dynamic assessment of medical skills and well-being of trainees. METHODS: Three surveys were administered during 2020 to general surgery residents and fellows in a university hospital in Argentina. Perceptions on the impact of coronavirus disease 2019 were described. The stress rate and risk factors were analyzed. RESULTS: The study included 124 answers. In total, 59% were men, 82% of trainees reported concerns about the loss of surgical skills in early phase 1. Time spent with academic activities increased in 94.5% of the cases. Owing to the prompt implementation of changes, by the end of 2020, 73% participated in a greater number of procedures (P = .003); personal protective equipment use related problems dropped from 40% to 14% (P = .031), and the lack of adequate spaces where trainees could express reduced from 28% to zero. Half of the trainees felt stressed, and 18% required psychological assistance; reporting problems with personal protective equipment use was identified as a risk factor (P = .012). CONCLUSION: Assessing trainees' perceptions at 3 different times of the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic enabled the implementation of dynamic changes. The negative impact on surgical training was partially offset by the optimal use of virtual learning. Half of them felt stressed, identifying problems in the use of personal protective equipment as a predisposing factor.

INTRODUCTION: The COVID-19 pandemic led to the cancellation of non-essential surgical procedures in March 2020. With the resumption of surgical activity, patients undergoing surgery were one of the first population groups to be systematically tested for PCR. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of asymptomatic SARS-CoV-2 carriers after the resumption of non-essential surgical activity. METHODS: Retrospective multicenter observational study of patients scheduled for surgery or undergoing emergency surgery in Catalonia between 20 April and 31 May 2020. The microbiological results of preoperative PCR tests and clinical records were reviewed, and an epidemiological survey was conducted on patients with positive PCR for SARS-CoV-2. RESULTS: A total of 10,838 patients scheduled for surgery or who underwent emergency surgery were screened for COVID-19. One hundred and eighteen patients (1.09%) were positive for SARS-CoV-2 in the 72 h prior to surgery. The prevalence of asymptomatic carriers was 0.7% (IC95%: 0.6%-0.9%). The first week of the study presented the highest prevalence of asymptomatic carriers [1.9% (CI95%:1.1%-3.2%)]. CONCLUSIONS: The low levels of asymptomatic carriers of COVID-19 infection obtained in the surgical population of hospitals in Catalonia after the resumption of surgical activity, shows that most patients were able to undergo surgical procedures without the risks of COVID-19 associated complications in the perioperative period.

True splenic aneurysms are saccular dilations of all the layers of the splenic artery, more common in women, pregnancy and portal hypertension. They are usually asymptomatic and diagnosed incidentally during the study of other abdominal diseases. Up to 10% may present with rupture, which implies a high morbidity and mortality. Treatment of splenic aneurysms is still a subject of controversy and there is a great variety of therapeutic modalities. We present two cases of patients with splenic aneurysms: one who presented with rupture and the other one incidentally diagnosed. Both were treated with endovascular embolization achieving optimal results. Although the utility of this therapy has not been assessed for giant or ruptured aneurysms, it allowed us to solve these scenarios in a secure and effective way, with minimum morbidity and mortality.


Los aneurismas esplénicos verdaderos son dilataciones saculares que involucran todas las capas de la arteria esplénica. Se presentan más frecuentemente en mujeres, en el embarazo y pacientes con hipertensión portal. Son habitualmente asintomáticos y diagnosticados incidentalmente durante el estudio de otra afección abdominal. Hasta un 10% se puede presentar con ruptura, lo que supone un escenario con una alta morbilidad y mortalidad. El tratamiento de los aneurismas esplénicos es aún un tema de controversia y existen variadas modalidades terapéuticas. Presentamos dos casos de pacientes con aneurismas esplénicos: uno de ellos que se manifestó con rotura y el otro por un diagnóstico incidental. Ambos fueron resueltos mediante embolización endovascular con resultados óptimos. Esta modalidad terapéutica poco difundida para el tratamiento de aneurismas esplénicos gigantes o rotos, nos permitió resolver el cuadro de forma segura y efectiva, con mínima morbilidad y mortalidad.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic has drastically affected everyone in a hit or miss manner. Since it began, evidence of the neuro-invasive potential of the virus has been intensifying significantly. Several pathways have been hypothesized to elucidate the neurotropic nature of SARS-CoV2. It is the need of the hour to collect vital information. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate and correlate the neuro-radiological and neurological manifestations in patients diagnosed with SARS-CoV2.To identify neuro-invasive pathways of COVID infection. METHODS: Relevant studies were identified through four databases-the Cochrane Library, PubMed, Science Direct, and Web of Science. These were searched using relevant keywords-"COVID-19," "SARS-CoV2," "neurological manifestations," "neuroimaging," "CT," and "MRI." Relevant articles were screened according to a pre-defined inclusion and exclusion criteria from December 2019 to August 2020. RESULTS: Our review included a total of 63 full text publications with 584 patients, composed mainly of observational studies, case reports, and case series. The most common neurological manifestations associated with COVID-19 were altered mental status, stroke, and paralysis. About 17.85% patients who underwent neuroimaging were found to be having ischemic changes suggestive of a stroke. This was followed by hemorrhagic changes as the second most common finding. The most commonly involved vessel was the Middle Cerebral Artery. Besides stroke, we found that SARS-CoV2 could be the cause for new-onset seizures, Guillain-Barre Syndrome, encephalitis, and many other severe neurological diseases. CONCLUSION: The information that we have obtained so far will prove dynamic to healthcare providers working against the COVID-19 pandemic. It is necessary to be aware of these atypical neurological findings for the early diagnosis and treatment of COVID-19 infected patients. However, to completely understand the connection between SARS-CoV2 and the nervous system, further research is necessary.

Compelling evidence in rats support the idea that gestational chronodisruption induces major changes in maternal circadian rhythms and fetal development and that these changes impact adult life at many physiological levels. Using a model of chronic photoperiod shifting throughout gestation (CPS), in which pregnant female rats (Sprague-Dawley strain; n = 16 per group) were exposed to lighting schedule manipulation every 3-4 days reversing the photoperiod completely or light/dark photoperiod (12/12; LD), we explored in the adult rat male offspring body weight gain, glucose homeostasis, adipose tissue content, adipose tissue response to norepinephrine (NE), and adipose tissue proteomic in the basal condition with standard diet (SD) and in response to high-fat diet (HFD). In adult CPS male (100-200 days old; n = 8 per group), we found increasing body weight, under SD and adiposity. Also, we found an increased response to intraperitoneal glucose (IGTT). After 12 weeks of HFD, white adipose tissue depots in CPS offspring were increased further, and higher IGTT and lower intraperitoneal insulin tolerance response were found, despite the lack of changes in food intake. In in vitro experiments, we observed that adipose tissue (WAT and BAT) glycerol response to NE from CPS offspring was decreased, and it was completely abolished by HFD. At the proteomic level, in CPS adipose tissue, 275 proteins displayed differential expression, compared with LD animals fed with a standard diet. Interestingly, CPS offspring and LD fed with HFD showed 20 proteins in common (2 upregulated and 18 downregulated). Based on these common proteins, the IPA analysis found that two functional pathways were significantly altered by CPS: network 1 (AKT/ERK) and network 2 (TNF/IL4; data are available via ProteomeXchange with identifier PXD026315). The present data show that gestational chronodisruption induced deleterious effects in adipose tissue recruitment and function, supporting the idea that adipose tissue function was programmed in utero by gestational chronodisruption, inducing deficient metabolic responses that persist into adulthood.

One hundred and eighteen patients (1.09%) were positive for SARS-CoV-2 in the 72hours prior to surgery. The prevalence of asymptomatic carriers was 0.7% (95%CI: 0.6% - 0.9%). The first week of the study presented the highest prevalence of asymptomatic carriers [1.9% (95%CI: 1.1%-3.2%)]. CONCLUSIONS: The low levels of asymptomatic carriers of COVID-19 infection obtained in the surgical population of hospitals in Catalonia after the resumption of surgical activity, shows that most patients were able to undergo surgical procedures without the risks of COVID-19 associated complications in the perioperative period.

Endometriosis is defined as the presence of endometrial tissue outside the uterine cavity. It affects ~5-10% of women in their reproductive years. When it affects the intestine, it tends to be confused clinically with a wide variety of affections, which is why it has sometimes been called "the great simulator". A review of the literature shows that intestinal localization is rare and that obstruction secondary to this cause is even more unusual, with preoperative diagnosis being a challenge for surgeons. With the purpose of highlighting clinical and diagnostic imaging characteristics that help the preoperative suspicion of this entity, so rare in routine practice, we present two cases of women who underwent emergency surgery, without a previous diagnosis of endometriosis and with intestinal occlusion as the first manifestation of the disease. Treatment of intestinal occlusion by endometriosis consists of intestinal resection of the affected sector and primary anastomosis. Diagnosis of intestinal occlusion secondary to ileal endometriosis is based on a high index of suspicion and should be considered in women of childbearing age, without a history of disease and with a history of painful menstruation.


La endometriosis se define como la presencia de tejido endometrial fuera de la cavidad uterina. Ocurre en aproximadamente 5 a 10% de las mujeres en edad fértil. Cuando afecta al intestino tiende a confundirse clínicamente con una gran variedad de afecciones por lo cual en algunas oportunidades se le ha llamado también "la gran simuladora". La revisión de la literatura muestra que la localización intestinal es poco frecuente y que la obstrucción secundaria a esta causa es aún más inusual, siendo el diagnóstico preoperatorio un desafío para los cirujanos. Con el propósito de resaltar características clínicas y de estudio por imágenes que ayuden a la sospecha preoperatoria de esta entidad tan infrecuente en la práctica habitual, se presentan dos casos de mujeres operadas de urgencia, sin diagnóstico previo de endometriosis y con oclusión intestinal como primera manifestación de la enfermedad. El tratamiento consiste en la resección intestinal del sector afectado y anastomosis primaria. El diagnóstico se basa en un alto índice de sospecha y debería ser considerado en mujeres en edad fértil, sin antecedentes patológicos y con historia de menstruaciones dolorosas.

Onchocerciasis is a blinding disease caused by the filarial parasite Onchocerca volvulus, with a worldwide distribution. Onchocerciasis has been targeted for regional elimination based on annual and semiannual mass drug administration (MDA) with ivermectin in endemic communities over several years. This strategy in Ecuador led to the interruption of transmission and suspension of ivermectin MDA in 2009 with certification of elimination in 2014. In the present study, we analyzed sera collected in 2018 from 123 children aged 5-9 years from formerly hyperendemic communities in the Esmeraldas focus, Ecuador, for the presence of antibodies to Ov16 antigen. All samples were negative, indicating no evidence of transmission since MDA was stopped. Ov16-based serology offers an economic and practical alternative for measuring vector infectivity for post-certification surveillance in formerly endemic countries where expertise and capacity to reliably measure fly infectivity rates are costly to maintain.

Adverse prenatal conditions are known to impose significant trade-offs impinging on health and disease balance during adult life. Among several deleterious factors associated with complicated pregnancy, alteration of the gestational photoperiod remains largely unknown. Previously, we reported that prenatal manipulation of the photoperiod has adverse effects on the mother, fetus, and adult offspring; including cardiac hypertrophy. Here, we investigated whether chronic photoperiod shifting (CPS) during gestation may program adult renal function and blood pressure regulation. To this end, pregnant rats were subjected to CPS throughout pregnancy to evaluate the renal effects on the fetus and adult offspring. In the kidney at 18 days of gestation, both clock and clock-controlled gene expression did not display a daily pattern, although there were recurrent weaves of transcriptional activity along the 24 h in the control group. Using DNA microarray, significant differential expression was found for 1,703 transcripts in CPS relative to control fetal kidney (835 up-regulated and 868 down-regulated). Functional genomics assessment revealed alteration of diverse gene networks in the CPS fetal kidney, including regulation of transcription, aldosterone-regulated Na+ reabsorption and connective tissue differentiation. In adult offspring at 90 days of age, circulating proinflammatory cytokines IL-1ß and IL-6 were increased under CPS conditions. In these individuals, CPS did not modify kidney clock gene expression but had effects on different genes with specific functions in the nephron. Next, we evaluated several renal markers and the response of blood pressure to 4%NaCl in the diet for 4 weeks (i.e., at 150 days of age). CPS animals displayed elevated systolic blood pressure in basal conditions that remained elevated in response to 4%NaCl, relative to control conditions. At this age, CPS modified the expression of Nhe3, Ncc, Atp1a1, Nr3c1 (glucocorticoid receptor), and Nr3c2 (mineralocorticoid receptor); while Nkcc, Col3A1, and Opn were modified in the CPS 4%+NaCl group. Furthermore, CPS decreased protein expression of Kallikrein and COX-2, both involved in sodium handling. In conclusion, gestational chronodisruption programs kidney dysfunction at different levels, conceivably underlying the prehypertensive phenotype observed in the adult CPS offspring.

Introducción: La escisión completa del mesocolon con linfadenectomía D3 (CME-D3) mejora los resultados de los pacientes operados por cáncer del colon. Reconocer adecuadamente la anatomía vascular es fundamental para evitar complicaciones. Objetivo: El objetivo primario fue determinar la prevalencia de las variaciones anatómicas de la arteria mesentérica superior (AMS) y sus ramas en relación a la vena mesentérica superior (VMS). El objetivo secundario fue evaluar la asociación entre las distintas variantes anatómicas y el sexo y la etnia de lo pacientes. Diseño: Estudio de corte transversal. Material y métodos: Se incluyeron 225 pacientes con cáncer del colon derecho diagnosticados entre enero 2017 y diciembre de 2020. Dos radiólogos independientes describieron la anatomía vascular observada en las tomografías computadas. Según la relación de las ramas de la AMS con la VMS, la población fue dividida en 2 grupos y subdividida en 6 (1a-c, 2a-c). Resultados: La arteria ileocólica fue constante, transcurriendo en el 58,7% de los casos por la cara posterior de la VMS. La arteria cólica derecha, presente en el 39,6% de los pacientes, cruzó la VMS por su cara anterior en el 95,5% de los casos. La variante de subgrupo más frecuente fue la 2a seguida por la 1a (36,4 y 24%, respectivamente). No se encontró asociación entre las variantes anatómicas y el sexo u origen étnico. Conclusión: Las variaciones anatómicas de la AMS y sus ramas son frecuentes y no presentan un patrón predominante. No hubo asociación entre las mismas y el sexo u origen étnico en nuestra cohorte. El reconocimiento preoperatorio de estas variantes mediante angiotomografía resulta útil para evitar lesiones vasculares durante la CME-D3. (AU)


Background: Complete mesocolic excision with D3 lymphadenectomy (CME-D3) improves the outcomes of patients operated on for colon cancer. Proper recognition of vascular anatomy is essential to avoid complications. Aim: Primary outcome was to determine the prevalence of anatomical variations of the superior mesenteric artery (SMA) and its branches in relation to the superior mesenteric vein (SMV). Secondary outcome was to evaluate the association between these anatomical variations and sex and ethnicity of the patients. Design: Cross-sectional study. Material and methods: Two hundred twenty-fivepatients with right colon cancer diagnosed between January 2017 and December 2020 were included. Two independent radiologists described the vascular anatomy of computed tomography scans. The population was divided into 2 groups and subdivided into 6 groups (1a-c, 2a-c), according to the relationship of the SMA and its branches with the SMV. Results: The ileocolic artery was constant, crossing the SMV posteriorly in 58.7% of the cases. The right colic artery, present in 39.6% of the patients, crossed the SMV on its anterior aspect in 95.5% of the cases. The most frequent subgroup variant was 2a followed by 1a (36.4 and 24%, respectively). No association was found between anatomical variants and gender or ethnic origin. Conclusions: The anatomical variations of the SMA and its branches are common, with no predominant pattern. There was no association between anatomical variations and gender or ethnic origin in our cohort. Preoperative evaluation of these variations by computed tomography angi-ography is useful to avoid vascular injuries during CME-D3. (AU)
