PURPOSE: Both type 2 diabetes (T2D) and low levels of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) are very prevalent conditions among Mexicans. Genetic variants in the LIPC gene have been associated with both conditions. This study aimed to evaluate the association of the -514C < T (rs1800588) LIPC gene polymorphism with different metabolic traits, particularly the effects of this polymorphism on HDL-C plasma levels and T2D risk. METHODS: Mediation analysis was used to assess the direct and indirect effects of the -514C>T LIPC gene variant on HDL-C levels, T2D risk, and body mass index (BMI), in 2105 Mexican mestizo participants. We also assessed the functional effect of the -514C>T LIPC variant on the promoter activity of a reporter gene in the HepG2 cell line. RESULTS: Direct effects show that the -514C>T LIPC polymorphism is significantly associated with increased HDL-C plasma levels (ß = 0.03; p < 0.001). The -514C>T variant resulted in an indirect protective effect on T2D risk through increasing HDL-C levels (ß = - 0.03; p < 0.001). Marginal direct association between -514C>T and T2D was found (ß = 0.08; p = 0.06). Variables directly influencing T2D status were European ethnicity (ß = - 7.20; p < 0.001), age (ß = 0.04; p < 0.001), gender (ß = - 0.15; p = 0.017) and HDL-C (ß = - 1.07; p < 0.001). In addition, we found that the -514C>T variant decreases the activity of LIPC promoter by 90% (p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: The -514C>T polymorphism was not directly associated with T2D risk. HDL-C acts as a mediator between -514C>T LIPC gene variant and T2D risk in the Mexican population.

PURPOSE: Type 2 diabetes (T2D) and low serum concentration of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-c) are common coexisting metabolic disorders. ABCA1 variants have been shown to be associated to these conditions. We sought to test the combined effect of two ABCA1 gene common variants, rs2422493 (- 565C > T) and rs9282541 (R230C) on HDL-c levels and T2D risk. METHODS: Path analysis was conducted in 3,303 Mexican-mestizos to assess the specific contributions of rs2422493 and rs9282541 ABCA1 variants, insulin resistance, waist-to-height ratio (WHtR), and age on HDL-c levels and T2D risk. Participants were classified into four groups according to their ABCA1 variants carrier status: (i) the reference group carried wild type alleles for both ABCA1 variants (-/-), (ii) +/- were carriers of rs2422493 but non-carriers of rs9282541, (iii) -/+ for carriers of rs9282541 but not carriers of rs2422493 and (iv) carriers of minor alleles for both SNPs (+/+). Principal components from two previous genome-wide association studies were used to control for ethnicity. RESULTS: We identified significant indirect effects on T2D risk mediated by HDL-c in groups -/+ and +/+ (ß = 0.04; p = 0.03 and ß = 0.06; p < 0.01, respectively) in comparison to the -/- reference group. Low concentrations of HDL-c were directly and significantly associated with increased T2D risk (ß = -0.70; p < 0.01). WHtR, male gender, age, and insulin resistance were also associated with T2D risk (p < 0.05). There was no significant direct effect for any of the ABCA1 groups on T2D risk: p = 0.99, p = 0.58, and p = 0.91 for groups +/-, -/+, and +/+ respectively. CONCLUSIONS: The ABCA1 rs9282541 (R230C) allele is associated with T2D in Mexicans through its effect on lowering HDL-c levels. This is the first report demonstrating that HDL-c levels act as an intermediate factor between an ABCA1 variant and T2D.

We describe the investigation of two temporally coincident illness clusters involving salmonella and Staphylococcus aureus in two states. Cases were defined as gastrointestinal illness following two meal events. Investigators interviewed ill persons. Stool, food and environmental samples underwent pathogen testing. Alabama: Eighty cases were identified. Median time from meal to illness was 5·8 h. Salmonella Heidelberg was identified from 27 of 28 stool specimens tested, and coagulase-positive S. aureus was isolated from three of 16 ill persons. Environmental investigation indicated that food handling deficiencies occurred. Colorado: Seven cases were identified. Median time from meal to illness was 4·5 h. Five persons were hospitalised, four of whom were admitted to the intensive care unit. Salmonella Heidelberg was identified in six of seven stool specimens and coagulase-positive S. aureus in three of six tested. No single food item was implicated in either outbreak. These two outbreaks were linked to infection with Salmonella Heidelberg, but additional factors, such as dual aetiology that included S. aureus or the dose of salmonella ingested may have contributed to the short incubation periods and high illness severity. The outbreaks underscore the importance of measures to prevent foodborne illness through appropriate washing, handling, preparation and storage of food.

BACKGROUND: To develop and validate a nomogram and web-based calculator to predict overall survival (OS) in Caucasian-advanced oesophagogastric adenocarcinoma (AOA) patients undergoing first-line combination chemotherapy. METHODS: Nine hundred twenty-four AOA patients treated at 28 Spanish teaching hospitals from January 2008 to September 2014 were used as derivation cohort. The result of an adjusted-Cox proportional hazards regression was represented as a nomogram and web-based calculator. The model was validated in 502 prospectively recruited patients treated between October 2014 and December 2016. Harrell's c-index was used to evaluate discrimination. RESULTS: The nomogram includes seven predictors associated with OS: HER2-positive tumours treated with trastuzumab, Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group performance status, number of metastatic sites, bone metastases, ascites, histological grade, and neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio. Median OS was 5.8 (95% confidence interval (CI), 4.5-6.6), 9.4 (95% CI, 8.5-10.6), and 14 months (95% CI, 11.8-16) for high-, intermediate-, and low-risk groups, respectively (P<0.001), in the derivation set and 4.6 (95% CI, 3.3-8.1), 12.7 (95% CI, 11.3-14.3), and 18.3 months (95% CI, 14.6-24.2) for high-, intermediate-, and low-risk groups, respectively (P<0.001), in the validation set. The nomogram is well-calibrated and reveals acceptable discriminatory capacity, with optimism-corrected c-indices of 0.618 (95% CI, 0.591-0.631) and 0.673 (95% CI, 0.636-0.709) in derivation and validation groups, respectively. The AGAMENON nomogram outperformed the Royal Marsden Hospital (c-index=0.583; P=0.00046) and Japan Clinical Oncology Group prognostic indices (c-index=0.611; P=0.03351). CONCLUSIONS: We developed and validated a straightforward model to predict survival in Caucasian AOA patients initiating first-line polychemotherapy. This model can contribute to inform clinical decision-making and optimise clinical trial design.

The human ether à go-go 1 potassium channel (hEAG1) is required for cell cycle progression and proliferation of cancer cells. Inhibitors of hEAG1 activity and expression represent potential therapeutic drugs in cancer. Previously, we have shown that hEAG1 expression is downregulated by calcitriol in a variety of cancer cells. Herein, we provided evidence on the regulatory mechanism involved in such repressive effect in cells derived from human cervical cancer. Our results indicate that repression by calcitriol occurs at the transcriptional level and involves a functional negative vitamin D response element (nVDRE) E-box type in the hEAG1 promoter. The described mechanism in this work implies that a protein complex formed by the vitamin D receptor-interacting repressor, the vitamin D receptor, the retinoid X receptor, and the Williams syndrome transcription factor interact with the nVDRE in the hEAG1 promoter in the absence of ligand. Interestingly, all of these transcription factors except the vitamin D receptor-interacting repressor are displaced from hEAG1 promoter in the presence of calcitriol. Our results provide novel mechanistic insights into calcitriol mode of action in repressing hEAG1 gene expression.

Solvent effects on the UV-vis absorption spectra and molecular properties of four models of the photoactive yellow protein (PYP) chromophore have been studied with ASEP/MD, a sequential quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics method. The anionic trans-p-coumaric acid (pCA(-)), thioacid (pCTA(-)), methyl ester (pCMe(-)), and methyl thioester (pCTMe(-)) derivatives have been studied in gas phase and in water solution. We analyze the modifications introduced by the substitution of sulfur by oxygen atoms and hydrogen by methyl in the coumaryl tail. We have found some differences in the absorption spectra of oxy and thio derivatives that could shed light on the different photoisomerization paths followed by these compounds. In solution, the spectrum substantially changes with respect to that obtained in the gas phase. The n â π1* state is destabilized by a polar solvent like water, and it becomes the third excited state in solution displaying an important blue shift. Now, the π â π1* and π â π2* states mix, and we find contributions from both transitions in S1 and S2. The presence of the sulfur atom modulates the solvent effect and the first two excited states become practically degenerate for pCA(-) and pCMe(-) but moderately well-separated for pCTA(-) and pCTMe(-).

This study aimed to evaluate clinical qualities and evolution on ceramic endocrowns produced with the Cerec 3D (Sirona). Endocrowns were produced in a hospital environment and evaluated according to the FDI criteria on the day of placement and 6 months afterwards. Each item was graded from 1 (good) to 5 (bad). A global score, as well as a score for aesthetics, functioning and biological integration was assessed for each evaluation. During the 6-month evaluation period, the scores were always related to good clinical quality, except for single crown restoration. The scores did not change between the two periods of evaluation.

BACKGROUND: The clinical management of elderly patients with heart failure (HF) is not firmly established. Decision-making should be individualized depending on the biological deterioration of each patient, from aggressive management to a palliative approach. Frailty can serve as the basis for this comprehensive individualized management. Our objective was to evaluate the importance of the main clinical problems, as well as the events that required the use of health resources, based the degree of frailty, in elderly patients with HF. METHODS AND RESULTS: Retrospective observational cohort study. Frailty was defined according to the deficit accumulation construct. A total of 546 patients hospitalized for acute HF were included. The median age (Q1-Q3) was 82 (78-86) years. A total of 454 patients (83%) showed some degree of frailty: 221 (48.7%) mild, 207 (45.6%) moderate and 26 (5.7%) advanced. There was a significant tendency towards polypharmacy from no to severe frailty. Hospital events were recorded for 4 (1-6) patients with mild frailty, 4 (2-6) patients with moderate frailty and 2 ((1-4) patients with advanced frailty (pâ¯=â¯0.045). A total of 204 patients (37.4%) died during follow-up. The median time to death was 11.4 (4-16.8), 6.7 (3.3-11.6), 6.5 (3.4-12.2) and 4.1 (0.8-7.7) months for patients with no, mild, moderate, or advanced frailty, respectively (pâ¯=â¯0.006). CONCLUSIONS: Frailty due to deficit accumulation is a good predictor of clinical problems and events that require the use of health resources; therefore, it can serve as a basis for the management of HF in the elderly.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to evaluate the success of computer-aided design-computer-aided manufacturing (CAD-CAM) endocrown restorations of endodontically treated teeth (ETT) performed by supervised undergraduate students. The study also intended to identify possible factors that may lead to failures. METHODS AND MATERIALS: This observational open cohort study was based on clinical data from endocrown restorations performed by residents and undergraduate students in their 4th, 5th, and 6th year from July 2011 to May 2018. The presence of a tooth with an endocrown on the arch was the main criteria used to calculate the survival rate of restored teeth. The quality of the remaining endocrowns was evaluated referring to the FDI criteria. The cases of failure were categorized into either favorable or unfavorable. RESULTS: A total of 343 ETT were restored with endocrowns in 315 patients. Among them, 199 patients encompassing 225 endocrowns were followed during a 56 ± 26 month period. The survival rate of restored teeth was found to be 81.8%, the estimated Kaplan-Meier survival rate being 71.8% at 9 years. Among the 41 failed cases, 32 were favorable (debonding and/or ceramic fractures) and 9 were unfavorable. CONCLUSION: Endocrown restorations of posterior ETT using CAD-CAM technologies could be carried out by undergraduates with a low risk of failure. Teacher supervision could be reinforced, covering all steps of each endocrown procedure in order to avoid failures due to insufficient thickness or loss of retention.

A clinical pathology characterized by disturbances in eating behaviour has been often associated to socio-cultural factors that influence the psychopathology of these disorders. The alarming increase in the number of teenagers with eating disorders underscores the need to promote research on the underlying causes, and to identify high-risk subpopulations in need of effective targeted treatment. The objective of this study was to assess the prevalence of eating disorders among an adolescent population of both sexes on the island of Gran Canaria. The sample was composed of adolescent boys and girls aged 12 to 17 years old (N=1364) who resided in different municipalities of Gran Canaria. The EAT-40 questionnaire was administered (cut-off point at 30), and body mass index measurements were assessed. The mean BMI for the 1364 subjects was 21.8 Kg/m²; 15% were underweight, and of these at least 1% obtained BMI values below 15 Kg/m². Thus, 13.4% of adolescents were potentially at risk of eating disorders according to the EAT-40 questionnaire. Moreover, the BMI was not significantly correlated to the EAT-40 and was not considered a sufficient parameter to establish the incidence of eating disorders.

OBJECTIVE: Health related quality of life (HRQOL) over course of the disease was ascertained in SLE patients from LUMINA, a multiethnic US cohort, using the SF-36-derived utility measure, the SF-6D. METHODS: All available visits were examined to predict HRQOL using either variables from the baseline or enrollment visits or from the preceding visits. The physical and mental component summary (PCS and MCS, respectively) measures of the SF-36 were also examined. A total of 2662 visits from 588 SLE patients were included; 90% of the patients were women, 19% Hispanic-Texans, 17% Hispanic-Puerto Ricans, 35% African Americans and 29% Caucasians. The patients' mean (SD) SF-6D was 0.6 (0.1). RESULTS: In multivariable analyses, Hispanic-Texan ethnicity and higher levels of social support were predictors of HRQOL whereas older age, poverty, greater disease activity and damage and higher levels of fatigue, helplessness and abnormal illness-related behaviors were negative predictors. Prior SF-6D was the strongest variable predictive of subsequent HRQOL, when included. The analyses in which the PCS and MCS were examined as end-points were, overall, consistent with the SF-6D results. CONCLUSION: We conclude that the SF-6D index provides an adequate measure of self-perceived HRQOL and that patients' self-perception of HRQOL is influenced by disease and non-disease related factors.

A combination of three different Salmonella-specific bacteriophages (BPs) and one competitive exclusion (CE) product were used to reduce Salmonella Enteritidis (SE) colonization in experimentally infected chickens. Equal numbers of 7-day-old chickens were used in each of three groups: a CE group (treated with CE), a BP group (treated with BP), and a CE-plus-BP group (treated with both products). The CE product was administered via coarse spray at 1 day of age and the cocktail of three BPs was given via spray at 6 days of age using a multiplicity of infection of 10(3) plaque-forming units. All the experimental groups, except a healthy control group, were challenged orally with 2.95 x 10(5) colony-forming units (CFU)/ml of an SE strain at 7 days of age. Seven days postchallenge, the chickens were euthanatized for individual SE detection, quantitative bacteriology, and phage isolation from ceca and an internal organ pool. The qualitative bacteriology demonstrated that the use of the CE product diminished the incidence of SE to 75.7% and the mixture of BPs reduced it to 80%; when CE plus BP were used, the incidence dropped significantly to 38.7% (P < 0.0001), as compared with the infection control group (100%). A significant difference in the incidence was observed between the CE and the CE-plus-BP groups, and the BP and the CE-plus-BP groups (P = 0.0027 and P = 0.0010, respectively). The mean SE cecal count diminished with the use of CE plus BP (1.6 x 10(2) CFU/g, P = 0.0003) compared with the control group (1.56 x 10(5) CFU/g), the CE group (4.23 x 10(3) CFU/g), and the BP group (9.48 x 10(3) CFU/g). On the basis of the present study, it may be concluded that the use of both types of biocontrollers can be an effective method for reducing SE colonization in commercial chickens, but further basic and applied research is needed.

Budd-Chiari syndrome can be defined as an interruption or diminution of the normal blood flow out of the liver. Patients with Budd-Chiari syndrome present with varying degrees of symptomatology that can be divided into the following categories: fulminant, acute, subacute and chronic. The subacute form is the most common presentation. A majority of patients with Budd-Chiari syndrome have an underlying hypercoagulability state. We present the case of a young woman with Crohn s disease on oral contraceptives who developed bilateral pulmonary thromboembolism and Budd-Chiari syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the immediate effect on dynamic and static balance of a manual protocol of plantar stimulation in healthy subjects. MATERIALS AND METHOD: Of the 144 healthy and physically active volunteers recruited, 98 subjects participated. Subjects were randomly assigned and allocated to the experimental group (EG) (n= 50), in which a 10-min manual protocol of plantar stimulation was applied on the right foot, or to the control group (CG) (n= 48). The change scores of the modified Star Excursion Balance Test (mSEBT) and the Unipedal Stance Test (UPST) were used to assess the immediate effect of the protocol on dynamic and static balance, respectively. RESULTS: In the dynamic balance, a group effect was found in the anterior direction, posteromedial direction and composite scores of the mSEBT when groups were compared by limb. Changes in the posteromedial direction of both limbs (right limb: p= 0.002, left limb: p= 0.05) and composite score of the right limb (p= 0.009) were significantly greater in the EG versus the CG. Non-significant results were found in the static balance (UPST time). CONCLUSIONS: The application of a 10-minute manual stimulation protocol without joint mobilization, addressed to stimulate the plantar cutaneous mechanoreceptors, could elicit benefits on dynamic balance. This improvement was observed bilaterally even though only one plantar surface was stimulated. As balance deficits may impair functional movements and regular training in sports, this intervention aims to ameliorate dynamic balancing ability could improve the functional recovery of sport gestures.

METHODS: SLE women from LUMINA of Hispanic, African American and Caucasian ethnicity were studied. Adverse pregnancy outcome was a miscarriage or abortion (<20 weeks), a stillbirth (> or = 20) and/or a moderate to severe preterm-baby (<34 weeks); good outcome was either a mild preterm-baby (> or = 34 weeks) or a full-term baby [C-section or vaginal delivery (38-42 weeks)]. Pregnancies occurring after SLE diagnosis (TD) were included; pregnancy outcome was the unit of analyses. The relationship between selected variables and pregnancy outcomes was examined by univariable and multivariable analyses. RESULTS: Adverse outcomes occurred in 63.7% of 102 pregnancies. In the univariable analyses, Texan Hispanic and African American ethnicities, fewer years of education, higher number of ACR criteria, renal involvement, glucocorticoid exposure and the maximum dose of glucocorticoids used prior to the pregnancy outcome were associated with an adverse pregnancy outcome. Renal involvement was independently associated with an adverse pregnancy outcome [Odds ratio (OR)=5.219 (95% Confidence Interval (CI) 1.416-19.239, p=0.0131] as were the maximum dose of glucocorticoids used prior to the pregnancy outcome (OR=1.028; CI:1.002-1.054; p=0.0315) and fewer years of education (OR=1.204; CI:1.006-1.472; p=0.0437). Ethnicity was not retained in the multivariable model. CONCLUSION: Renal involvement, the maximum dose of glucocorticoids used prior to pregnancy and fewer years of education were associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes. These data have implications for the management of women with lupus planning to become pregnant.

Results of an international intercomparison study (CCQM-P86) to assess the analytical capabilities of national metrology institutes (NMIs) and selected expert laboratories worldwide to accurately quantitate the mass fraction of selenomethionine (SeMet) and total Se in pharmaceutical tablets of selenised-yeast supplements (produced by Pharma Nord, Denmark) are presented. The study, jointly coordinated by LGC Ltd., UK, and the Institute for National Measurement Standards, National Research Council of Canada (NRCC), was conducted under the auspices of the Comité Consultatif pour la Quantité de Matière (CCQM) Inorganic Analysis Working Group and involved 15 laboratories (from 12 countries), of which ten were NMIs. Apart from a protocol for determination of moisture content and the provision of the certified reference material (CRM) SELM-1 to be used as the quality control sample, no sample preparation/extraction method was prescribed. A variety of approaches was thus used, including single-step and multiple-step enzymatic hydrolysis, enzymatic probe sonication and hydrolysis with methanesulfonic acid for SeMet, as well as microwave-assisted acid digestion and enzymatic probe sonication for total Se. For total Se, detection techniques included inductively coupled plasma (ICP) mass spectrometry (MS) with external calibration, standard additions or isotope dilution MS (IDMS), inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry , flame atomic absorption spectrometry and instrumental neutron activation analysis. For determination of SeMet in the tablets, five NMIs and three academic/institute laboratories (of a total of five) relied upon measurements using IDMS. For species-specific IDMS measurements, an isotopically enriched standard of SeMet (76Se-enriched SeMet) was made available. A novel aspect of this study relies on the approach used to distinguish any errors which arise during analysis of a SeMet calibration solution from those which occur during analysis of the matrix. To help those participants undertaking SeMet analysis to do this, a blind sample in the form of a standard solution of natural abundance SeMet in 0.1 M HCl (with an expected value of 956 mg kg(-1) SeMet) was provided. Both high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC)-ICP-MS or gas chromatography (GC)-ICP-MS and GC-MS techniques were used for quantitation of SeMet. Several advances in analytical methods for determination of SeMet were identified, including the combined use of double IDMS with HPLC-ICP-MS following extraction with methanesulfonic acid and simplified two-step enzymatic hydrolysis with protease/lipase/driselase followed by HPLC-ICP-IDMS, both using a species-specific IDMS approach. Overall, satisfactory agreement amongst participants was achieved; results averaged 337.6 mg kg(-1) (n = 13, with a standard deviation of 9.7 mg kg(-1)) and 561.5 mg kg(-1) (n = 11, with a standard deviation of 44.3 mg kg(-1)) with median values of 337.6 and 575.0 mg kg(-1) for total Se and SeMet, respectively. Recovery of SeMet from SELM-1 averaged 95.0% (n = 9). The ability of NMIs and expert laboratories worldwide to deliver accurate results for total Se and SeMet in such materials (selensied-yeast tablets containing approximately 300 mg kg(-1) Se) with 10% expanded uncertainty was demonstrated. The problems addressed in achieving accurate quantitation of SeMet in this product are representative of those encountered with a wide range of organometallic species in a number of common matrices.

The tumoral clone of Waldenström's macroglobulinemia (WM) shows a wide morphological heterogeneity, which ranges from B lymphocytes (BL) to plasma cells (PC). By means of genome-wide expression profiling we have been able to identify genes exclusively deregulated in BL and PC from WM, but with a similar expression pattern in their corresponding cell counterparts from chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) and multiple myeloma (MM), as well as normal individuals. The differentially expressed genes have important functions in B-cell differentiation and oncogenesis. Thus, two of the genes downregulated in WM-BL were IL4R, which plays a relevant role in CLL B-cell survival, and BACH2, which participates in the development of class-switched PC. Interestingly, one of the upregulated genes in WM-BL was IL6. A set of four genes was able to discriminate clonal BL from WM and CLL: LEF1 (WNT/beta-catenin pathway), MARCKS, ATXN1 and FMOD. We also found deregulation of genes involved in plasma cell differentiation such as PAX5, which was overexpressed in WM-PC, and IRF4 and BLIMP1, which were underexpressed. In addition, three of the target genes activated by PAX5 - CD79, BLNK and SYK - were upregulated in WM-PC. In summary, these results indicate that both PC and BL from WM are genetically different from the MM and CLL cell counterpart.

OBJECTIVES: Accumulating data provide evidence that some metabolites of 17beta-estradiol are biologically active and mediate multiple effects on the cardiovascular and renal systems. We investigated the effect of 2-methoxyestradiol (an active metabolite of estradiol with non-feminizing activity) on the development of hypertension and myocardial vascular remodeling in male and female ovarectomized SHR. METHODS: Rats were divided into five groups: intact females, ovarectomized (OVX), OVX+ 2-methoxyestradiol (2ME), control males, and male+2ME. Systolic blood pressure was determined from 10 to 18 weeks. Structural changes in coronary vessels were quantified by an image analyzer. Immunoblotting of phosphorylated ERK1/2 and NADPH oxidase activity were performed on mesenteric arteries. RESULTS: Treatment with 2ME reduced the increase in systolic blood pressure in male and ovarectomized rats to values not different from those obtained in intact females. Myocardial arterioles and small arteries showed significant increases in wall-to-lumen ratio and perivascular fibrosis in male and ovarectomized rats when compared with intact females. NADPH oxidase activity was increased in mesenteric arteries from males and ovarectomized females as compared with intact females. Finally, the expression of phosphorilated ERK1/2 were significantly higher in mesenteric arteries from male and ovariectomized animals than in those from intact females. Those effects of ovarectomy and gender differences were totally or partially prevented by treatment with 2-methoxyestradiol. CONCLUSIONS: These data demonstrate that 2-methoxyestradiol protects the vasculature from hypertension-induced myocardial arterial remodeling in male and ovarectomized SHR, and that might be in part related to decreased superoxide generation and ERK1/2 activation.

The magnetoimpedance (MI) effect in Fe73.5Si13.5B9Nb3Cu1 melt-spun amorphous ribbons has been studied in the frequency range (1-500 MHz). Isothermal heating treatments in a furnace have been employed to nanocrystallize the ribbons (1 h at 565 degrees C in a vacuum of 10(-3) mbar), while other samples were annealed at lower temperatures (400 and 475 degrees C during 1 h), in order to evaluate the influence of the annealing temperature on the MI effect. The high-frequency impedance was measured using a technique based on the reflection coefficient measurements of a specific transmission line by using a network analyzer. Frequency dependence of the MI ratio, DeltaZ/Z, and both resistive, DeltaR/R, and reactive, DeltaX/X, components of magnetoimpedance were measured in the amorphous and annealed states, at different temperatures. A maximum value of the MI ratio of about 50% at a driving frequency of 18 MHz is obtained in the nanocrystalline (annealed at 565 degrees C) ribbon. Maxima for DeltaR/R of about 81% at 85 MHz and DeltaX/X around 140% at 5 MHz were also achieved. It is revealed that the microstructural evolution in the nanocrystalline sample leads to a magnetic softening, an optimum domain structure and a permeability which is sensitive to frequency and applied magnetic field, generating a large MI response.

Three different lyric bacteriophages (BPs) were isolated from the sewage system of commercial chicken flocks and used to reduce Salmonella Enteritidis (SE) colonization from experimental chickens. Ten-day-old chickens were challenged with 9.6 x 10(5) colony-forming units (CFU)/ml of a SE strain and treated by coarse spray or drinking water with a cocktail of the three phages at a multiplicity of infection (MO1) of 10(3) plaque-forming units (PFU) 24 hr prior to SE challenge. Chickens were euthanatized at day 20 of age for individual SE detection, quantitative bacteriology, and phage isolation from the intestine and from a pool of organs. SE detection was performed by both bacteriologic culture and genome detection by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Qualitative bacteriology showed that aerosol-spray delivery of BPs significantly reduced the incidence of SE infection in the chicken group (P = 0.0084) to 72.7% as compared with the control group (100%). In addition, SE counts showed that phage delivery both by coarse spray and drinking water reduced the intestinal SE colonization (P < 0.01; P < 0.05, respectively). BPs were isolated at 10 days postinfection from the intestine and from pools of organs from BP-treated chickens. We conclude that the phage treatment, either by aerosol spray or drinking water, may be a plausible alternative to antibiotics for the reduction of Salmonella infection in poultry.
