RESUMO

PURPOSE: The study aimed to determine the anxiety levels of caregivers who performed clean intermittent catheterization (CIC) on their children and the factors affecting them. METHODS: This descriptive study was conducted between January 6, and May 29, 2023 with caregivers of 42 patients who were followed up by the pediatric nephrology outpatient clinic of a university for CIC. The study data were collected using the "Participant Information Form" and the "State and Trait Anxiety Scale." RESULTS: According to the results, of the children included in the study, 73.8% were female, 64.3% were diagnosed with spina bifida (SB), and 76.2% received CIC applications 4-6 times a day. All the caregivers were mothers, and 76.2% received CIC training from a doctor. However, 78.6% of them found the training insufficient, leading them to rely on self-experimentation when applying CIC to their own children. None of the caregivers received information or training on the CIC application from nurses, and there were no home visits or telephone counseling provided after the hospital discharge. The mean score for the state anxiety scale among the caregivers was 45.90 ± 10.57, while the mean score for the trait anxiety scale was 46.92 ± 8.43. Significantly higher mean trait anxiety scores were observed among caregivers with chronic diseases who did not receive training on the CIC application (p < 0.05). Additionally, caregivers of children who experienced 3-4 urinary tract infections (UTIs) within the last 3 months also had significantly higher mean trait anxiety scores (p < 0.05). The mean trait anxiety level scores of caregivers of children who had 3-4 UTIs in the last 3 months were significantly higher (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: It was concluded that caregivers' lack of training on CIC implementation, having chronic disease, and having frequent UTIs in their children were effective on anxiety levels.

RESUMO

This study aimed to examine the relationship between health literacy level and health beliefs and attitudes regarding prostate cancer screening in males aged 40-70 who lived in rural areas and had not been diagnosed with prostate cancer. The sample of the study consisted of 379 men. The data were collected between January and December 2022 using the "Participant Information Form," the "Turkey Health Literacy-32 Scale," and the "Prostate Cancer Screening Health Belief Model Scale." 58% of the participants are between the ages of 40-55. It was determined that 61.2% defined cancer as a fatal disease, only 14.2% had PSA in their blood and 21.6% had DRE. The average health literacy scale total score of the participants is 33.76 ± 11.55. The health literacy level of men was found to be limited in 14.8%. There was a negative relationship between the total scores of the health literacy scale and the susceptibility perception, seriousness perception, and barriers perception sub-dimensions of the Health Belief Model Scale of Cancer Screenings and a positive relationship between the total scores of the Health Literacy Scale and health motivation and benefits perception subdimensions (p < .001). As a result, men living in rural areas should be given individual counseling by health professionals to use screening tests for cancer symptoms and early diagnosis. In addition, men's health literacy levels should be increased by providing planned and regular health education in order to create positive attitudes and perceptions regarding cancer screenings, especially prostate cancer.

RESUMO

This study was aimed to determine knowledge level of informal caregivers daily care, emergency situations and the effect of the socio-demographic characteristics of informal caregivers on their knowledge levels. This descriptive and cross-sectional study was conducted between November 1, 2021, and June 30, 2022, with 83 (79.8 %) informal caregivers living in rural areas in northeast Türkiye. The data were collected using the Barthel Index for Activities of Daily Living, the Socio-Demographic Questionnaire, and the Questionnaire for Information on Elderly Care and Situations Requiring Emergency Care. 54 (65.1 %) of caregivers were women, 74 (89.2 %) did not receive training on the daily care of the elderly. A statistically significant difference was determined between the level of knowledge of caregivers about elderly care, caring experience for the elderly and emergency situations, their education level, and their perceptions of needing further information about elderly care (p < 0.05). Informal care givers should be trained by nurses.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The study aimed to determine the level of knowledge and perceptions of preparedness for disasters among nurses working in a tertiary university hospital. METHOD: The population of this cross-sectional study consisted of nurses working in a university hospital in the Eastern Black Sea Region of Turkey (n = 340). The sample included 183 nurses who were determined using the OpenEpi program and the universal sampling method. The data were collected using the Sociodemographic Information Form and the Disaster Preparedness Perception Scale in Nurses (DPPSN) and analyzed using SPSS 22 software. RESULTS: The mean age of the participants was 34.31 + 8.52 years; 83.1% were female, 66.1% had at least a bachelor's degree and worked in a surgical ward, 49.7% had been working for at least 11 years, and 58.5% had received training on disasters. Those who received disaster-related training received it mostly face to face (70.1%) from their institutions (91.6%) and in the form of 2-4 hours of training (75.7%); 52.5% had previously participated in a disaster-related drill, and 83.1% took on the role of caregiver during a disaster. The DPPSN mean score of the nurses involved in the study was found to be 3.53 ± 0.58 out of 5 points for the total scale. CONCLUSION: The results of the study showed that nurses considered themselves partially adequate for disaster preparedness, in general.
