RESUMO

We present the results of the study of the correlation between the electrical and structural properties of individual GaAs nanowires measured in their as-grown geometry. The resistance and the effective charge carrier mobility were extracted for several nanowires, and subsequently, the same nano-objects were investigated using X-ray nanodiffraction. This revealed a number of perfectly stacked zincblende and twinned zincblende units separated by axial interfaces. Our results suggest a correlation between the electrical parameters and the number of intrinsic interfaces.

RESUMO

The pH dependent redox potential of the oxidoreductase glucose oxidase (GOx) from Aspergillus niger, which is the most frequently applied enzyme in electrochemical glucose biosensors and biofuel cells, was measured between pH 4.5 and 8.5 using UV/vis spectroelectrochemistry. In the entire pH range under investigation, the flavin adenine dinucleotide cofactor of GOx changed directly from the oxidized quinone to the doubly reduced hydroquinone. No stable semiquinoid species could be detected if electrochemical equilibrium was reached. From the pH dependency of the GOx redox potential, a pK(a) of 7.2 has been determined for the GOx flavohydroquinone. At pH values ≤6.0, a dependency of the reduction mechanism and the GOx redox potential on the presence of halides, especially on Cl(-), was observed. For the development of glucose biosensors and glucose biofuel cell anodes working at physiological or neutral pH, the GOx redox potentials at pH 7.4 and pH 7.0 are of main interest. Here values of E(1/2 pH 7.4) = -97 ± 3 mV and E(1/2 pH 7.0) = -80 ± 4 mV have been determined.

RESUMO

We propose a novel method to guide THz radiation with low losses along thin layers of water. This approach is based on the coupling of evanescent surface fields at the opposite sides of the thin water layer surrounded by a dielectric material, which leads to a maximum field amplitude at the interfaces and a reduction of the energy density inside the water film. In spite of the strong absorption of water in this frequency range, calculations show that the field distribution can lead to propagation lengths of several centimeters. By means of attenuated total reflection measurements we demonstrate the coupling of incident THz radiation to the long-range surface guided modes across a layer of water with a thickness of 24 µm. This first demonstration paves the way for THz sensing in aqueous environments.

RESUMO

THz technologies are a powerful tool for label-free detection of biomolecules. However, significant reduction of the lower detection limit is required to apply THz-sensors in biomedical diagnosis. This paper reports an ultrasensitive THz-biosensor based on asymmetric double split ring resonators (aDSRR) for the direct label- and PCR-free detection of DNA at physiologically relevant concentrations. We introduce selective functionalization and localized electric field concentration to enhance aDSRR sensitivity and specificity. The sensor characteristics are demonstrated using the human tumor marker MIA in cDNA samples produced from total RNA without PCR-amplification. Measurements of DNA samples with concentrations as low as 1.55 × 10-12 mol/l are presented.

RESUMO

We investigate a vertically-stacked hybrid photodiode consisting of a thin n-type molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) layer transferred onto p-type silicon. The fabrication is scalable as the MoS2 is grown by a controlled and tunable vapor phase sulfurization process. The obtained large-scale p-n heterojunction diodes exhibit notable photoconductivity which can be tuned by modifying the thickness of the MoS2 layer. The diodes have a broad spectral response due to direct and indirect band transitions of the nanoscale MoS2. Further, we observe a blue-shift of the spectral response into the visible range. The results are a significant step towards scalable fabrication of vertical devices from two-dimensional materials and constitute a new paradigm for materials engineering.
