RESUMO

Most previous measurements of oxidized mercury were collected using a method now known to be biased low. In this study, a dual-channel system with an oxidized mercury detection limit of 6-12 pg m-3 was deployed alongside a permeation tube-based automated calibrator at a mountain top site in Steamboat Springs Colorado, USA, in 2021 and 2022. Permeation tubes containing elemental mercury and mercury halides were characterized via an International System of Units (SI)-traceable gravimetric method and gas chromatography/mass spectrometry before deployment in the calibrator. The dual-channel system recovered 97 ± 4 and 100 ± 8% (±standard deviation) of injected elemental mercury and HgBr2, respectively. Total Hg permeation rates and Hg speciation from the gravimetric method, the chromatography system, the dual-channel system, and an independent SI-traceable measurement method performed at the Jozef Stefan Institute laboratory were all comparable within the respective uncertainties of each method. These are the first measurements of oxidized mercury at low environmental concentrations that have been verified against an SI-traceable calibration system in field conditions while sampling ambient air, and they show that accurate, routinely calibrated oxidized mercury measurements are achievable.

RESUMO

Female Aedes aegypti mosquitoes infect more than 400 million people each year with dangerous viral pathogens including dengue, yellow fever, Zika and chikungunya. Progress in understanding the biology of mosquitoes and developing the tools to fight them has been slowed by the lack of a high-quality genome assembly. Here we combine diverse technologies to produce the markedly improved, fully re-annotated AaegL5 genome assembly, and demonstrate how it accelerates mosquito science. We anchored physical and cytogenetic maps, doubled the number of known chemosensory ionotropic receptors that guide mosquitoes to human hosts and egg-laying sites, provided further insight into the size and composition of the sex-determining M locus, and revealed copy-number variation among glutathione S-transferase genes that are important for insecticide resistance. Using high-resolution quantitative trait locus and population genomic analyses, we mapped new candidates for dengue vector competence and insecticide resistance. AaegL5 will catalyse new biological insights and intervention strategies to fight this deadly disease vector.

RESUMO

The bis(iminoxolene)iridium complex (Diso)2IrCl (Diso = N-(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)-4,6-di-tert-butyl-2-imino-o-benzoquinone) reacts with pyridine to give trans-(Diso)2Ir(py)Cl as the kinetic product, with cis-(Diso)2Ir(py)Cl formed as the exclusive thermodynamic product upon heating. Electronic spectra and density functional theory calculations point to very similar electronic structures for the cis and trans isomers, with a nonbonding iminoxolene-centered HOMO and a metal-iminoxolene π* LUMO. The triplet states of cis-(Diso)2Ir(py)Cl and cis-[(Diso)2Ir(py)2]+ (but not trans-(Diso)2Ir(py)Cl) are unusually low in energy (1000-1500 cm-1 above the singlets), as shown by variable-temperature NMR spectroscopy. The low-energy triplets are attributed to a change in dihedral angle in the iminoxolenes, which allows a partial π interaction that cannot be achieved in the trans octahedral compounds. Mechanistic studies of the trans-cis isomerization in toluene indicate that the reaction proceeds via isomerization of the five-coordinate species to a form with cis iminoxolene ligands and an apical oxygen. This form is high in energy due to the loss of a secondary iminoxolene-to-iridium π-donor interaction that is possible in the trans form but not in the cis form for the square pyramidal structures. This stereoelectronic effect, combined with the poorer binding of pyridine in trans-(Diso)2Ir(py)Cl due to the interactions of the N-aryl substituents with the pyridine, makes the pyridine dissociate faster from the trans isomer by a factor of 108 at room temperature.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Humans are inherently social, biologically programmed to connect with others. Social connections are known to impact mental and physical health. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to test whether social network structure is linked to cognition, mood, fatigue, and regional brain volumes in persons with multiple sclerosis (MS). METHODS: A questionnaire quantifying individual-level social network structure (size, density, effective size, and constraint), a comprehensive battery of neuropsychological tests, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was administered to 51 persons with relapsing-remitting MS. Linear regressions assessed associations of network variables to cognition, depression, fatigue, and structural brain volumes. RESULTS: Higher network density and constraint, indicating stronger connections among network members, were associated with worse language functions. Conversely, larger network effective size, a measure of non-redundant network members, was associated with better language functions. No relationships of network structure to depression or fatigue were found. Larger network size was related to larger amygdala volume. CONCLUSION: Findings suggest that social network structure is linked to language function and amygdala volume in persons with MS. Patients with close-knit networks showed worse language function than those with open networks. Longitudinal studies with larger samples are warranted to evaluate potential causal links between social network structure and MS-related cognitive impairment.

RESUMO

N-(2,6-Diisopropylphenyl)-4,6-di-tert-butyl-o-iminobenzoquinone (Diso) reacts with the (cyclooctadiene)iridium chloride dimer to form a monoiminoxolene complex, (Diso)Ir(cod)Cl. Reaction of 2 equiv of the iminoquinone with chlorobis(cyclooctene)iridium dimer affords the bis-iminoxolene (Diso)2IrCl. This five-coordinate complex adopts a distorted square pyramidal structure with an apical chloride ligand and undergoes halide exchange to form an air-stable iodide complex. (Diso)2IrCl can be reduced by one electron to form neutral, square planar (Diso)2Ir, while oxidation with PhICl2 gives octahedral trans-(Diso)2IrCl2. The cis isomer can be prepared by air oxidation of (Diso)2IrCl; cis/trans isomerization is not observed even on prolonged heating. Structural and spectroscopic features of the complexes are consistent with the presence of strong, covalent π bonding between the metal and the iminoxolene ligands, with structural data suggesting between 45 and 60% iridium character in the π bonding orbitals, depending on the ancillary ligands. The spectroscopic similarity of (Diso)2Ir and (Diso)2IrCl to their cobalt congeners suggests that the first-row metal complexes likewise have appreciably covalent metal-iminoxolene π bonds.

RESUMO

Mercury pollution is primarily emitted to the atmosphere, and atmospheric transport and chemical processes determine its fate in the environment, but scientific understanding of atmospheric mercury chemistry is clouded in uncertainty. Mercury oxidation by atomic bromine in the Arctic and the upper atmosphere is well established, but less is understood about oxidation pathways in conditions of anthropogenic photochemical smog. Many have observed rapid increases in oxidized mercury under polluted conditions, but it has not been clearly demonstrated that these increases are the result of local mercury oxidation. We measured elemental and oxidized mercury in an area that experienced abundant photochemical activity (ozone >100 ppb) during winter inversion (i.e., cold air pools) conditions that restricted entrainment of air from the oxidized mercury-rich upper atmosphere. Under these conditions, oxidized mercury concentrations decreased day-upon-day, even as ozone and other pollutants increased dramatically. A box model that incorporated rapid kinetics for reactions of elemental mercury with ozone and OH radical overestimated observed oxidized mercury, while incorporation of slower, more widely accepted reaction rates did not. Our results show that rapid gas-phase mercury oxidation by ozone and OH in photochemical smog is unlikely.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) is a chronic, inflammatory disease of the liver with increasing prevalence. However, limited epidemiological data exist for the prevalence of AIH in the United States. We used a large database to describe the prevalence of AIH in the United States and the autoimmune diseases associated with it. APPROACH AND RESULTS: Data was collected from a commercial database (Explorys Inc., Cleveland, OH), an aggregate of Electronic Health Record data from 26 major integrated health care systems in the United States. We identified a cohort of patients with a diagnosis of AIH from April 2014 to April 2019 based on a Systemized Nomenclature of Medicine-Clinical Terms and calculated the prevalence of AIH. Of the 37,161,280 individuals active in the database from April 2014 to 2019, we identified 11,600 individuals with a diagnosis of AIH with an overall prevalence rate of 31.2/100,000. The prevalence of AIH was increased in females compared with males [odds ratio (OR)=3.21, P<0.0001], elderly (aged above 65 y) compared with adults (aged 18 to 65 y) and children (aged below 18 y) (OR=2.51, P<0.0001) and whites compared with African Americans, Asians, and Hispanics (OR=1.12, P<0.0001). Moreover, patients with AIH were more likely to have Sjögren syndrome, systemic lupus erythematosus, ulcerative colitis, celiac disease, rheumatoid arthritis, Crohn's disease, and autoimmune thyroiditis as compared with patients without AIH. CONCLUSIONS: We found that the estimated prevalence of AIH in the United States is 31.2/100,000, which is comparable to the reported prevalence of AIH in Europe. We confirmed that AIH has a strong association with other autoimmune diseases studied in the literature.

RESUMO

Oxobis(iminoxolene)osmium(VI) compounds (Rap)2OsO (Rap = 2-(4-RC6H4N)-4,6-tBu2C6H2O) are readily deoxygenated by phosphines and phosphites to give five-coordinate (Rap)2Os(PR'3) or six-coordinate (Rap)2Os(PR'3)2. Structural data indicate that this net two-electron reduction is accompanied by apparent oxidation of the iminoxolene ligands due to their greater ability to engage in π donation to the reduced deoxy form of the osmium complex. In (Rap)2Os(PR'3)2, the HOMO is a ligand-based combination of the iminoxolene redox-active orbitals, while the LUMO is a highly covalent metal-iminoxolene π* orbital. In the trans isomer, the HOMO is required to be ligand-localized by symmetry, while in the cis isomer, the ligands adopt a conformation that minimizes metal-ligand π* interactions in the HOMO. Kinetic studies indicate that the deoxygenations involve the rate-determining attack of the phosphorus(III) reagent on the five-coordinate oxo complexes. Varying the substituents of the aryl groups on the iminoxolene ligands or on the triarylphosphines has little effect on the rate of oxygen atom transfer, with the best correlation shown between oxygen atom transfer rates and the HOMO-LUMO gap of the oxo complexes. This suggests that the osmium oxo group shows a balance between electrophilic and nucleophilic character in its oxygen atom transfer reactions with phosphorus(III) reagents.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Children living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection require lifelong effective antiretroviral therapy (ART). The goal of ART in HIV-infected persons is sustained viral suppression. There is limited information on virological non-suppression or failure and its associated factors in children in resource limited countries, particularly Ghana. METHODS: A cross-sectional study of 250 children aged 8 months to 15 years who had been on ART for at least 6 months attending the Paediatric HIV clinic at Korle Bu Teaching hospital in Ghana was performed. Socio-demographic, clinical, laboratory and ART Adherence related data were collected using questionnaires as well as medical records review. Blood samples were obtained for viral load and CD4+ count determination. Viral load levels > 1000 copies/ml on ART was considered virological non-suppression. Logistic regression was used to identify factors associated with virological non-suppression. RESULTS: The mean (±SD) age of the study participants was 11.4 ± 2.4 years and the proportion of males was 53.2%. Of the 250 study participants, 96 (38.4%) had virological non-suppression. After adjustment for significant variables, the factors associated with non-suppressed viral load were female gender (AOR 2.51 [95% CI 1.04-6.07], p = 0.041), having a previous history of treatment of tuberculosis (AOR 4.95 [95% CI 1.58-15.5], p = 0.006), severe CD4 immune suppression status at study recruitment (AOR 24.93 [95% CI 4.92-126.31], p < 0.001) and being on a nevirapine (NVP) based regimen (AOR 7.93 [95% CI 1.58-1.15], p = 0.005). CONCLUSION: The prevelance of virological non-suppression was high. Virological non-suppression was associated with a previous history of TB treatment, female gender, severe CD4 immune suppression status at study recruitment and being on a NVP based regimen. Early initiation of ART and phasing out NVP-based regimen might improve viral load suppression in children. In addition, children with a history of TB may need focused measures to maximize virological suppression.

RESUMO

Polarization-resolved reflection spectroscopy enabled by a custom ultrahigh molecular weight polymer dove prism is used to identify spectral characteristics that manifest in the time domain at terahertz frequencies, which shows promise in combination with terahertz time-domain reference-free reflection imaging at a concealed interface. The method is used to produce 100×100 pixel images of an interface concealed by an ultrahigh molecular weight polymer using TE and TM polarized terahertz fields. The construction of material-specific image filters is guided by a theoretical reflection model by identifying reflection pulse characteristics unique to an interface. Application of these filters to the collected terahertz images distinguishes materials at the interface including the concealing plastic, water, air, glass, and metal that are correctly identified and imaged.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Aedes aegypti is the principal mosquito vector of Zika, dengue, and yellow fever viruses. Two subspecies of Ae. aegypti exhibit phenotypic divergence with regard to habitat, host preference, and vectorial capacity. Chromosomal inversions have been shown to play a major role in adaptation and speciation in dipteran insects and would be of great utility for studies of Ae. aegypti. However, the large and highly repetitive genome of Ae. aegypti makes it difficult to detect inversions with paired-end short-read sequencing data, and polytene chromosome analysis does not provide sufficient resolution to detect chromosome banding patterns indicative of inversions. RESULTS: To characterize chromosomal diversity in this species, we have carried out deep Illumina sequencing of linked-read (10X Genomics) libraries in order to discover inversion loci as well as SNPs. We analyzed individuals from colonies representing the geographic limits of each subspecies, one contact zone between subspecies, and a closely related sister species. Despite genome-wide SNP divergence and abundant microinversions, we do not find any inversions occurring as fixed differences between subspecies. Many microinversions are found in regions that have introgressed and have captured genes that could impact behavior, such as a cluster of odorant-binding proteins that may play a role in host feeding preference. CONCLUSIONS: Our study shows that inversions are abundant and widely shared among subspecies of Aedes aegypti and that introgression has occurred in regions of secondary contact. This library of 32 novel chromosomal inversions demonstrates the capacity for linked-read sequencing to identify previously intractable genomic rearrangements and provides a foundation for future population genetics studies in this species.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Prior studies on conversion total knee arthroplasty (cTKA) have reported increased technical challenges and risk of complications compared with primary knee arthroplasty. The purpose of this study was to compare two-year postoperative complication/revision rates between patients undergoing cTKA after prior periarticular open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) and those undergoing primary TKA. METHODS: Patients who underwent cTKA after prior periarticular ORIF of the ipsilateral knee were identified in a national all-payer claims database from 2010 to 2018. This ORIF-cTKA cohort was propensity matched to participants undergoing primary TKA based on age, gender, Charlson comorbidity index, and obesity status. Univariate analysis was performed to analyze differences in two-year complication and revision rates. RESULTS: After propensity matching, 823 patients were included in the ORIF-cTKA cohort and 1640 patients in the primary TKA cohort. No differences in demographics or comorbidities existed between cohorts. Relative to the primary TKA cohort, the ORIF-cTKA cohort had significantly higher incidences of all-cause revision (5.47% vs 2.47%, P = .001), periprosthetic joint infection (PJI; 4.74% vs 1.34%, P < .001), and intraoperative or postoperative periprosthetic fracture (1.58% vs 0.55%, P = .01) at two years postoperatively. There was also a nonsignificant trend toward increased rates of aseptic loosening (1.82% vs 0.91%, P = .052) in the ORIF-cTKA. CONCLUSION: Relative to primary TKA, cTKA after periarticular ORIF is associated with significantly increased rates of all-cause revision, PJI, and periprosthetic fracture at two years postoperatively. Surgeons should counsel these patients about the increased risks of these postoperative complications and consider treating them as high risk for PJI in the perioperative period.

RESUMO

We developed a cation-exchange membrane-based dual-channel system to measure elemental and oxidized mercury and deployed it with an automated calibration system and the University of Nevada, Reno-Reactive Mercury Active System (UNR-RMAS) at a rural/suburban field site in Colorado during the summer of 2018. Unlike oxidized mercury measurements collected via the widely used KCl denuder method, the dual-channel system was able to quantitatively recover HgCl2 and HgBr2 injected by the calibrator into the ambient sample air and compared well with the UNR-RMAS measurements. The system measured at 10 min intervals and had a 3-h average detection limit for oxidized mercury of 33 pg m-3. It was able to detect day-to-day variability and diel cycles in oxidized mercury (0 to 200 pg m-3) and will be an important tool for future studies of atmospheric mercury. We used a gravimetric method to independently determine the total mercury permeation rate from the permeation tubes. Permeation rates derived from the gravimetric method matched the permeation rates observed via mercury measurement devices to within 25% when the mercury permeation rate was relatively high (up to 30 pg s-1), but the agreement decreased for lower permeation rates, probably because of increased uncertainty in the gravimetric measurements.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Abdominal pain and opioid analgesic use are common in Crohn's disease (CD). AIMS: We sought to identify factors associated with abdominal pain in CD and evaluate the impact of opioid analgesics on pain and quality-of-life scores in this setting. METHODS: We performed a longitudinal cohort study using a prospective, consented IBD natural history registry from a single academic center between 2009 and 2013. Consecutive CD patients were followed for at least 1 year after an index visit. Data were abstracted regarding pain experience (from validated surveys), inflammatory activity (using endoscopic/histologic findings), laboratory studies, coexistent psychiatric disorders, medical therapy, opioid analgesic, and tobacco use. RESULTS: Of 542 CD patients (56.6% women), 232 (42.8%) described abdominal pain. Individuals with pain were more likely to undergo surgery and were more frequently prescribed analgesics and/or antidepressants/anxiolytics. Elevated ESR (OR 1.79; 95%CI 1.11-2.87), coexistent anxiety/depression (OR 1.87; 95%CI 1.13-3.09), smoking (OR 2.08; 95%CI 1.27-3.40), and opioid use (OR 2.46; 95%CI 1.33-4.57) were independently associated with abdominal pain. Eighty patients (14.8%) were prescribed opioids, while 31 began taking them at or after the index visit. Patients started on opioids demonstrated no improvement in abdominal pain or quality-of-life scores on follow-up compared to patients not taking opioids. CONCLUSIONS: Abdominal pain is common in CD and is associated with significant opioid analgesic utilization and increased incidence of anxiety/depression, smoking, and elevated inflammatory markers. Importantly, opioid use in CD was not associated with improvement in pain or quality-of-life scores. These findings reinforce the limitations of currently available analgesics in IBD and support exploration of alternative therapies.

RESUMO

This case report describes a 26-year-old male who presented with anterior chest pain after weightlifting at the gym. Point-of-care ultrasound was used to diagnose a sternal fracture, which was then confirmed on CT scan. This rare mechanism of sports related sternal fracture is discussed, as well as a review of the literature. The use of ultrasound for this application is also explored.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Total hip arthroplasty (THA) is a common treatment for end-stage osteonecrosis of the hip in patients with sickle cell disease (SCD). This patient population presents unique challenges in the perioperative period. This systematic review aims to investigate the existing literature on the outcomes, complications, and survivorship of primary THA in SCD patients. METHODS: A systematic search using Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines was performed of PubMed, MEDLINE, EMBASE, and Cochrane databases for clinical studies on THA in SCD patients. Studies on primary THA in SCD patients with a mean follow-up greater than 90 days were included. RESULTS: Sixteen studies containing 5193 SCD patients met criteria for inclusion. The Coleman Quality of Evidence score ranged from poor to moderate. SCD patients had a significant increase in Harris Hip Scores and Merle d'Aubigne Scores after undergoing THA. Compared to non-SCD patients, SCD patients had increased hospital length-of-stay, 30-day and 90-day readmission rates, and rates of medical complications, including pain crises, acute chest syndrome, cardiac complications, sepsis, and mortality. SCD patients also had increased rates of surgical complications, including wound complications, infection, periprosthetic fracture, and aseptic loosening. Overall, THA revision rates were higher in SCD patients relative to those with primary osteoarthritis. CONCLUSION: THA remains an effective treatment modality for osteonecrosis of the hip in SCD patients. However, these patients are at increased risk of medical and surgical complications. Surgeons should be aware of the unique challenges in this patient population when counseling and managing these patients in the perioperative period.

RESUMO

Detecting de novo mutations in viral and bacterial pathogens enables researchers to reconstruct detailed networks of disease transmission and is a key technique in genomic epidemiology. However, these techniques have not yet been applied to the malaria parasite, Plasmodium falciparum, in which a larger genome, slower generation times, and a complex life cycle make them difficult to implement. Here, we demonstrate the viability of de novo mutation studies in P. falciparum for the first time. Using a combination of sequencing, library preparation, and genotyping methods that have been optimized for accuracy in low-complexity genomic regions, we have detected de novo mutations that distinguish nominally identical parasites from clonal lineages. Despite its slower evolutionary rate compared with bacterial or viral species, de novo mutation can be detected in P. falciparum across timescales of just 1-2 years and evolutionary rates in low-complexity regions of the genome can be up to twice that detected in the rest of the genome. The increased mutation rate allows the identification of separate clade expansions that cannot be found using previous genomic epidemiology approaches and could be a crucial tool for mapping residual transmission patterns in disease elimination campaigns and reintroduction scenarios.

RESUMO

Bis(iminosemiquinone) complexes of divalent group 10 metals have been described as having open-shell singlet ground states characteristic of very strong coupling between the two ligand radicals. By using the nonlinear temperature dependence of the chemical shifts of the 1H NMR spectra, the singlet-triplet gaps in seven of these compounds have been measured, with the nickel compounds having gaps of about 2400 cm-1 and the palladium compounds about 1800 cm-1. Bis(iminosemiquinone)platinum complexes have singlet-triplet gaps too large to measure by this technique (over 2800 cm-1, estimated to be about 3000 cm-1), though bis(3,5-di- tert-butylbenzosemiquinonato)platinum(II) has a measurable singlet-triplet gap of 1850 cm-1. In combination with near-IR absorption data of the neutral, cationic, and anionic bis(iminosemiquinone) complexes, a simplified two-electron, two-orbital bonding model describing these compounds can be fully parametrized based on experimental data. The identity of the central metal principally affects the difference in energy between metal-ligand π nonbonding and metal-ligand π antibonding orbitals, with the strength of the bonding interactions increasing in the order Pd < Ni < Pt. Twisting the ligands out of planarity (by using a 2,2'-biphenylenediyl linker) has a marked effect on the optical spectra of the compounds but not on their singlet-triplet gaps; this indicates that the effect is not due to changes in bonding interactions but rather due to a decrease in the magnitude of the quantum mechanical exchange interactions in the twisted compared to the flat compounds.

RESUMO

The 2,2'-biphenylene-bridged bis(iminosemiquinone) complexes ( tBuClip)M [ tBuClipH4 = 4,4'-di- tert-butyl- N, N'-bis(3,5-di- tert-butyl-2-hydroxyphenyl)-2,2'-diaminobiphenyl; M = Pd, Pt] can be reduced to the bis(aminophenoxide) complexes ( tBuClipH2)M by reaction with hydrazobenzene (M = Pd) or by catalytic hydrogenation (M = Pt). The palladium complex with one aminophenoxide ligand and one iminosemiquinone ligand, ( tBuClipH)Pd, is generated by comproportionation of ( tBuClip)Pd with ( tBuClipH2)Pd in a process that is both slow (0.06 M-1 s-1 in toluene at 23 °C) and only modestly favorable ( Kcom = 1.9 in CDCl3), indicating that both N-H bonds have essentially the same bond strength. The mono(iminoquinone) complex ( tBuClipH)Pt has not been observed, indicating that the platinum analogue shows no tendency to comproportionate ( Kcom < 0.1). The average bond dissociation free energies (BDFE) of the complexes have been established by equilibration with suitably substituted hydrazobenzenes, and the palladium bis(iminosemiquinone) is markedly more oxidizing than the platinum compound, with hydrogen transfer from ( tBuClipH2)Pt to ( tBuClip)Pd occurring with Δ G° = -8.9 kcal mol-1. The palladium complex ( tBuClipH2)Pd reacts with nitroxyl radicals in two observable steps, with the first hydrogen transfer taking place slightly faster than the second. In the platinum analogue, the first hydrogen transfer is much slower than the second, presumably because the N-H bond in the monoradical complex ( tBuClipH)Pt is unusually weak. Using driving force-rate correlations, it is estimated that this bond has a BDFE of 55.1 kcal mol-1, which is 7.1 kcal mol-1 weaker than that of the first N-H bond in ( tBuClipH2)Pt. The two radical centers in the platinum, but not the palladium, complex thus act in concert with each other and display a strong thermodynamic bias toward two-electron reactivity. The greater thermodynamic and kinetic coupling in the platinum complex is attributed to the stronger metal-ligand π interactions in this compound.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Primary uterine angiosarcoma is a very rare tumour, with only 23 cases described till now. It is a malignant tumour with cells variably recapitulating the morphologic features of an endothelium and expressing immunohistochemical markers of endothelial cells. In general, it is a bulky neoplasm and frequently is at advance stage of disease at presentation. In general, patients with uterine angiosarcoma tend to have a poorer prognosis, mostly related to the aggressive nature and the metastatic potential of these tumours. CASE REPORT: We report a rare case of primary uterine angiosarcoma with unusual rhabdoid morphology in a 41-year-old female, who underwent radical hysterectomy and died of disease after 4 months of treatment. DISCUSSION: We described the differential diagnosis of primary angiosarcoma of the uterus that can pose a diagnostic challenge.
