RESUMO

Spentwash is a rich source of organic matter and essential plant nutrients in addition to excess salts. Sugar mills in Pakistan discharge about 3.48 million tons of spentwash annually, with no proper procedures for its disposal or utilization. To test the effect of diluted spentwash on soil and the soil's ability to support plant growth, sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum L.) variety CPF-237 was planted. The experiment was conducted in a randomized complete block design involving factorial combination of four concentrations of each spentwash (0, 10, 20, and 30%) and mineral fertilizers (0, 1/3, 2/3, and the full recommended rate of NP). The 10% spentwash plus 2/3 mineral fertilizer treatment substituted 33% each of N and P and 100% of K, saving mineral fertilizer cost (Rs. 48600 âˆ¼ US$458) in addition to 29.54% increase in yield over full NP fertilizer. The same treatment also improved the soil organic matter (65%), N (20%), P (25%), and K (230%) over full NP treatment alone. An increase in the salt content of the soil was detected within the prescribed limits, with the exception of HCO3.

RESUMO

Spinal cord injury (SCI) is a devastating condition with limited capacity for repair. Cell transplantation is a potential strategy to promote SCI repair with cells from the olfactory system being promising candidates. Although transplants of human olfactory mucosa (OM) are already ongoing in clinical trials, the repair potential of this tissue remains unclear. Previously, we identified mesenchymal-like stem cells that reside in the lamina propria (LP-MSCs) of rat and human OM. Little is known about these cells or their interactions with glia such as olfactory ensheathing cells (OECs), which would be co-transplanted with MSCs from the OM, or endogenous CNS glia such as oligodendrocytes. We have characterized, purified, and assessed the repair potential of human LP-MSCs by investigating their effect on glial cell biology with specific emphasis on CNS myelination in vitro. Purified LP-MSCs expressed typical bone marrow MSC (BM-MSC) markers, formed spheres, were clonogenic and differentiated into bone and fat. LP-MSC conditioned medium (CM) promoted oligodendrocyte precursor cell (OPC) and OEC proliferation and induced a highly branched morphology. LP-MSC-CM treatment caused OEC process extension. Both LP and BM-MSCs promoted OPC proliferation and differentiation, but only myelinating cultures treated with CM from LP and not BM-MSCs had a significant increase in myelination. Comparison with fibroblasts and contaminating OM fibroblast like-cells showed the promyelination effect was LP-MSC specific. Thus LP-MSCs harvested from human OM biopsies may be an important candidate for cell transplantation by contributing to the repair of SCI.

RESUMO

The study planned to determine proximate composition, antioxidant activity and chemical characterization in the fruit bodies of Auricularia auricula and pickled product. Two polysaccharide fractions (AAPF, AAPP) were purified from the fruiting body of A. auricula by ethanol precipitation, deproteination and macroporous resins and were subsequently lyophilized. The results showed that AAPF consisted of five monosaccharides, including glucose, rhamnose, arabinose, mannose and galactose with a molar ratio of 16.74:1.0:1.18:1.0:1.0; in contrast, AAPP was composed of four monosaccharides, namely arabinose, mannose, galactose and xylose with the molar ratio of 15.59:1.52:4.76:1.0. AAPF and AAPP were characterized by Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), which indicated peaks at approximately 3500cm(-1) and 522.28cm(-1) in the carbohydrate region and composed of ß-glycoside linkages at the 1200-1000cm(-1) peaks. However, the antioxidant activity of AAPF demonstrated a significant result in scavenging free radicals except for DDPH. The in vitro test indicated that AAPF and AAPP have good antioxidant activity, demonstrating that A. auricula polysaccharide has immense potential as a functional food.

RESUMO

A 66-year-old man presented with a large squamous cell carcinoma of the right nasal vestibule. He underwent partial rhinectomy and medial maxillectomy followed by staged reconstruction. Reconstruction of a full-thickness nasal defect requires repair of three distinct layers: the skin-soft tissue envelope, subsurface framework and intranasal lining. We report the first use in the UK of an osteocutaneous radial forearm free flap in the reconstruction of a subtotal nasal deficit. The skin of the radial forearm free flap was tubed to recreate the nasal lining and the radial bone reconstructed the dorsal contour of the nose. A full-thickness paramedian forehead flap supplied external coverage. The osteocutaneous radial forearm free flap and forehead flap is a viable option for large nasal defects requiring reconstruction of framework, nasal lining and external covering.

RESUMO

Inhaled foreign body (FB) is a rare clinical entity for the ENT surgeon. We present a case of an inhaled foreign body in the right main bronchus shown to move to the left main bronchus by repeat chest X-ray during a delay prior to removal. The role of repeat chest X-ray if there is a significant delay before removal of an inhaled foreign body and the optimal management are discussed.
