RESUMO

Optical meron is a type of nonplanar topological texture mainly observed in surface plasmon polaritons and highly symmetric points of photonic crystals in the reciprocal space. Here, we report Poynting-vector merons formed at the real space of a photonic crystal for a Γ-point illumination. Optical merons can be utilized for subwavelength-resolution manipulation of nanoparticles, resembling a topological Hall effect on electrons via magnetic merons. In particular, staggered merons and antimerons impose strong radiation pressure on large gold nanoparticles (AuNPs), while focused hot spots in antimerons generate dominant optical gradient forces on small AuNPs. Synergistically, differently sized AuNPs in a still environment can be trapped or orbit in opposite directions, mimicking a coupled galaxy system. They can also be separated with a 10 nm precision when applying a flow velocity of >1 mm/s. Our study unravels a novel way to exploit topological textures for optical manipulation with deep-subwavelength precision and switchable topology in a lossless environment.

Circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy has been extensively utilized for detecting and distinguishing the chirality of diverse substances and structures. However, CD spectroscopy is inherently weak and conventionally associated with chiral sensing, thus constraining its range of applications. Here, we report a DNA-origami-empowered metasurface sensing platform through the collaborative effect of metasurfaces and DNA origami, enabling achiral/slightly chiral sensing with high sensitivity via the enhanced ΔCD. An anapole metasurface, boasting over 60 times the average optical chirality enhancement, was elaborately designed to synergize with reconfigurable DNA origami. We experimentally demonstrated the detection of achiral/slightly chiral DNA linker strands via the enhanced ΔCD of the proposed platform, whose sensitivity was a 10-fold enhancement compared with the platform without metasurfaces. Our work presents a high-sensitivity platform for achiral/slightly chiral sensing through chiral spectroscopy, expanding the capabilities of chiral spectroscopy and inspiring the integration of multifunctional artificial nanostructures across diverse domains.

Aside from optical pushing and trapping that have been implemented successfully, the transportation of objects backward to the source by the optical pulling forces (OPFs) has attracted tremendous attention, which was usually achieved by increasing the forward momentum of light. However, the limited momentum transfer between light and object greatly constrains the amplitudes of OPFs. Here, we present a mechanism to generate strong interactions between object and background through the bound states in the continuums, which can generate large OPFs without increasing the forward momentum of light. The underlying physics is the extraction of momentum from the designed background lattice units assisted by mode symmetry. This work paves the way for extraordinary optical manipulations and shows great potential for exploring the momenta of light in media.

Dual electrolyte lithium-air batteries have received widespread attention for their ultra-high energy density. However, the low internal redox efficiency of these batteries results in a relatively short operating life. SnS2 is widely used in Li-S batteries, Li-ion batteries, photocatalysis, and other fields due to the high discharge capacity in batteries. However, SnS2 suffers from low electrical conductivity and slow redox kinetics. In this study, Co-doped SnS2 is prepared by hydrothermal method for application in dual-electrolyte lithium-air batteries to study its electrochemical performance and its catalytic reaction process by DFT theory. Conductivity tests show that the Co doping enhances the electrical conductivity of the material and high transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) results demonstrate that the Co doping of SnS2 increases the grain plane spacing and the material indicates that defects are created on the surface of the material, which is more beneficial to the electrochemical performance of the cell. Co-doped SnS2 exhibits excellent good cycling stability and high discharge capacity in a dual electrolyte lithium-air battery, maintaining a 0.7 V overpotential for 120 h at a current density of 0.1 mA cm-2, with a cell life of over 500 h and an initial discharge capacity showing excellent results up to 16 065 mA h g-1. In addition, this study explores the catalytic activity of Co-doped SnS2 based on density flooding theory (DFT). The results show that Co atoms have a synergistic effect with Sn atoms to perturb the lattice parameters. The calculations show that the catalytic activity is enhanced with the increasing of Co doping content and 3Co-Sn exhibits minimal overpotential.

The GGC repeat expansions in the NOTCH2NLC gene are associated with multiple neurodegenerative disorders. Herein, we report the clinical phenotype in a family with biallelic GGC expansions in NOTCH2NLC. Autonomic dysfunction was a prominent clinical manifestation in three genetically confirmed patients without dementia, parkinsonism, and cerebellar ataxia for > 12 years. A 7-T brain magnetic resonance imaging in two patients revealed a change in the small cerebral veins. The biallelic GGC repeat expansions may not modify the disease progression in neuronal intranuclear inclusion disease. Autonomic dysfunction-dominant may expand the clinical phenotype of NOTCH2NLC.

Circularly polarized light carries spin angular momentum, so it can exert an optical torque on the polarization-anisotropic particle by the spin momentum transfer. Here, we show that giant positive and negative optical torques on Mie-resonant (gain) particles arise from the emergence of superhybrid modes with magnetic multipoles and electric toroidal moments, excited by linearly polarized beams. Anomalous positive and negative torques on particles (doped with judicious amount of dye molecules) are over 800 and 200 times larger than the ordinary lossy counterparts, respectively. Meanwhile, a rotational motor can be configured by switching the s- and p-polarized beams, exhibiting opposite optical torques. These giant and reversed optical torques are unveiled for the first time in the scattering spectrum, paving another avenue toward exploring unprecedented physics of hybrid and superhybrid multipoles in metaoptics and optical manipulations.

Elliptically polarized light waves carry the spin angular momentum (SAM), so they can exert optical torques on nanoparticles. Usually, the rotation follows the same direction as the SAM due to momentum conservation. It is counterintuitive to observe the reversal of optical torque acting on an ordinary dielectric nanoparticle illuminated by an elliptically or circularly polarized light wave. Here, we demonstrate that negative optical torques, which are opposite to the direction of SAM, can ubiquitously emerge when elliptically polarized light waves are impinged on dielectric nanoparticles obliquely. Intriguingly, the rotation can be switched between clockwise and counterclockwise directions by controlling the incident angle of light. Our study suggests a new playground to harness polarization-dependent optical force and torque for advancing optical manipulations.

Imaging flow cytometry has become a popular technology for bioparticle image analysis because of its capability of capturing thousands of images per second. Nevertheless, the vast number of images generated by imaging flow cytometry imposes great challenges for data analysis especially when the species have similar morphologies. In this work, we report a deep learning-enabled high-throughput system for predicting Cryptosporidium and Giardia in drinking water. This system combines imaging flow cytometry and an efficient artificial neural network called MCellNet, which achieves a classification accuracy >99.6%. The system can detect Cryptosporidium and Giardia with a sensitivity of 97.37% and a specificity of 99.95%. The high-speed analysis reaches 346 frames per second, outperforming the state-of-the-art deep learning algorithm MobileNetV2 in speed (251 frames per second) with a comparable classification accuracy. The reported system empowers rapid, accurate, and high throughput bioparticle detection in clinical diagnostics, environmental monitoring and other potential biosensing applications.

Microstructured optical fibers (MOFs) have attracted intensive research interest in fiber-based optofluidics owing to their ability to have high-efficient light-microfluid interactions over a long distance. However, there lacks an exquisite design guidance for the utilization of MOFs in subwavelength-scale optofluidics. Here we propose a tapered hollow-core MOF structure with both light and fluid confined inside the central hole and investigate its optofluidic guiding properties by varying the diameter using the full vector finite element method. The basic optical modal properties, the effective sensitivity, and the nonlinearity characteristics are studied. Our miniature optofluidic waveguide achieves a maximum fraction of power inside the core at 99.7%, an ultra-small effective mode area of 0.38 µm2, an ultra-low confinement loss, and a controllable group velocity dispersion. It can serve as a promising platform in the subwavelength-scale optical devices for optical sensing and nonlinear optics.

Optical tweezers are versatile tools capable of sorting microparticles, yet formidable challenges are present in the separation of nanoparticles smaller than 200 nm. The difficulties arise from the controversy on the requirement of a tightly focused light spot in order to create strong optical forces while a large area is kept for the sorting. To overcome this problem, we create a near-field potential well array with connected tiny hotspots in a large scale. This situation can sort nanoparticles with sizes from 100 to 500 nm, based on the differentiated energy depths of each potential well. In this way, nanoparticles of 200, 300, and 500 nm can be selectively trapped in this microchannel by appropriately tuning the laser power. Our approach provides a robust and unprecedented recipe for optical trapping and separation of nanoparticles and biomolecules, such that it presents a huge potential in the physical and biomedical sciences.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the relationship between baseline characteristics and 90-day mortality in hepatitis B virus-related acute-on-chronic liver failure patients. METHODS: The retrospective study was conducted at Fuling Centre Hospital, Chongqing, China, and comprised data from July 2015 to June 2018 of hepatitis B virus-related acute-on-chronic liver failure patients. Demographic characteristics and clinical features at admission and 7 days post-admission were noted. The data was then divided into two groups based on a patient's 90-day survival status, and their clinical and lab characteristics were compared using SPSS 16. RESULTS: Of the 120 patients screened, 100(83.3%) were included; 75(75%) males and 25(25%) females. The overall mean age was 50.04±14.61 years. There were 68(68%) in the surviving group and 32(32%) in the non-surviving group. Patients who had hyper-leukocytosis, hypoalbuminaemia, lower prothrombin time activity, ascites, hepatic encephalopathy, higher alanine aminotransferase levels and renal dysfunction at admission had poor prognoses (p<0.05). At 7 days post-admission, the non-surviving group had lower platelet count, higher aspartate aminotransferase level, lower bilirubin normalisation rate and higher total bile acid levels (p<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Baseline organ failure severity was found to determine the outcome more strongly than the underlying cause.

Optical tweezers based on plasmonics experience a tremendous development on manipulating nanoparticles but are unable to avoid the problem of Joule heating. In this Letter, we report a silicon nanotrimer to optically trap and manipulate nanoparticles with negligible local heating. The optical forces and trapping potential of the nanotrimer are investigated using the finite-difference time-domain method. The results indicate that the trapping position can be shifted by tuning the polarization of the incident light. Furthermore, the silicon nanotrimer enables simultaneous trapping of multiple nanoparticles using circularly polarized illumination. Our work provides a promising building block for an integrated all-dielectric platform to realize optically driven nanomanipulation, which offers new possibilities for on-chip optical applications.

Strong mode coupling and Fano resonances arisen from exceptional interaction between resonant modes in single nanostructures have raised much attention for their advantages in nonlinear optics, sensing, etc. Individual electromagnetic multipole modes such as quadrupoles, octupoles, and their counterparts from mode coupling (toroidal dipole and nonradiating anapole mode) have been well investigated in isolated or coupled nanostructures with access to high Q factors in bound states in the continuum. Albeit the extensive study on ordinary dielectric particles, intriguing aspects of light-matter interactions in single chiral nanostructures is lacking. Here, we unveil that extraordinary multipoles can be simultaneously superpositioned in a chiral nanocylinder, such as two toroidal dipoles with opposite moments, and electric and magnetic sextupoles. The induced optical lateral forces and their scattering cross sections can thus be either significantly enhanced in the presence of those multipoles with high-Q factors, or suppressed by the bound states in the continuum. This work for the first time reveals the complex correlation between multipolar effects, chiral coupling, and optical lateral force, providing a distinct way for advanced optical manipulation.

RESUMO

We report an ingenious mechanism to obtain robust optical pulling force by a single plane wave via engineering the topology of light momentum in the background. The underlying physics is found to be the topological transition of the light momentum from a usual convex shape to a starlike concave shape in the carefully designed background, such as a photonic crystal structure. The principle and results reported here shed insightful concepts concerning optical pulling, and pave the way for a new class of advanced optical manipulation technique, with potential applications of drug delivery and cell sorting.

Two distinct macrophage phenotypes contribute to kidney injury and repair during the progression of renal interstitial fibrosis; proinflammatory (M1) and antiinflammatory (M2) macrophages. Legumain, an asparaginyl endopeptidase of the cysteine protease family, is overexpressed in macrophages in some pathological conditions. However, the macrophage subtype and function of macrophage-derived legumain remains unclear. To resolve this we tested whether M2 macrophages contribute to the accumulation of legumain in the unilateral ureteral obstruction model. Legumain-null mice exhibited more severe fibrotic lesions after obstruction compared with wild-type control. In vitro, IL4-stimulated M2 polarization led to the overexpression and secretion of legumain. The levels of fibronectin and collagen I/III, major components of the extracellular matrix, were reduced in the conditioned medium of TGF-ß1-stimulated tubular epithelial cells or fibroblasts after treatment with legumain or conditioned medium from IL4-stimulated macrophages. Administration of the legumain inhibitor RR-11a exacerbated fibrotic lesions following obstruction. Therapeutically, adoptive transfer of legumain-overexpressing macrophages or IL4-stimulated macrophages ameliorated the deposition of collagen and fibronectin induced by ureteral obstruction, either in the wild-type mice or in lgmn-/- mice. Thus, M2 macrophages overexpress and secret legumain and legumain mediates the anti-fibrotic effect of M2 macrophages in obstructive nephropathy.

BACKGROUND: The investigation of glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) as a diagnostic tool for abnormal glycometabolism is lack in acute ischemic stroke patients in China and worldwide. This paper was aimed to determine whether HbA1c, fasting plasma glucose (FPG), or HbA1c combined with FPG, could be used to screen for diabetes mellitus (DM) or prediabetes in acute ischemic stroke patients without previous DM. METHODS: Acute ischemic stroke patients without previous DM (n = 1,316) were selected from the Abnormal gluCose Regulation in Patients with Acute StrOke acrosS China Study (ACROSS-China). Oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT), HbA1c, FPG, and HbA1c combined with FPG were used as the screening methods to categorize the glycometabolic status. OGTT was taken as the golden method. Venn diagrams and the overlap index were used to determine the associations among the three methods of identifying abnormal glycometabolism. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUROC) and Youden index were used to assess and compare the accuracy in detecting abnormal glycometabolism. Youden analyses were performed to determine the ideal cutoff values of HbA1c in diagnosing abnormal glycometabolism. RESULTS: In acute ischemic stroke patients without previous DM, the overlaps of HbA1c versus OGTT, HbA1c versus FPG, and all the three methods independently, were low for detecting abnormal glycometabolism (all <50%). HbA1c can significantly detect more cases of prediabetes than OGTT (P < 0.001). The combination of HbA1c and FPG significantly raised the sensitivity to over 60.0%, specificity to over 80.0%, and the diagnostic accuracy (Youden index from under 40.0% to 42.4%)for DM. HbA1c of 5.7%-6.4% had a low to moderate concordance with OGTT for identifying prediabetes (AUROC = 0.557, P = 0.001). HbA1c values of 6.3% and 5.9% were found to be the ideal cutoff values for detecting DM and abnormal glycometabolism in our data, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: The combination of HbA1c and FPG increased the diagnostic rate of DM when compared with OGTT, and increased the diagnostic accuracy for DM compared with HbA1c or FPG alone. Our results advocate the use of HbA1c as screening tool for the diagnosis of pre-diabetes.

There was fewer paper about the relation between the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (17 Items, HDRS-17) factors and stroke outcomes. Our aim was to investigate the influence of total score and factors of HDRS-17 on outcome of ischemic stroke at 1 year. A total of 1,953 patients with acute ischemic stroke were enrolled into a multicentered and prospective cohort study. The HDRS-17 was used to assess symptoms at 2 weeks after ischemic stroke. The Modified Ranking Scale (mRS) scores of 3-6 points and 0-2 points were regarded as poor outcome and benign outcome, respectively. At 1 year, 1,753 (89.8 %) patients had mRS score data. After adjusting for the confounders, patients with a total HDRS-17 score of ≥ 8 had a worse outcome at 1 year (OR = 1.62, 95 % CI 1.18-2.23). Symptoms of suicide (OR = 1.89, 95 % CI 1.27-2.83), decreased or loss of interest of work (OR = 1.89, 95 % CI 1.38-2.58), retardation (OR = 1.74, 95 % CI 1.27-2.38), psychic anxiety (OR = 1.72, 95 % CI 1.26-2.34), and agitation (OR = 1.61, 95 % CI 1.08-2.40) increased the risks for poor outcome by >60 %, respectively. Depressed mood, somatic anxiety, somatic symptoms-gastrointestinal, and early insomnia also increased the risk for poor outcome by nearly 50 %, respectively. A total HDRS-17 score of ≥ 8, and suicide, decreased or loss of interest of work, anxiety, agitation, retardation, depressed mood, somatic anxiety, somatic symptoms-gastrointestinal, and early insomnia of the HDRS-17 factors at 2 weeks after ischemic stroke increase the risk for poor outcome at 1 year.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the risk factors and their prognostic value in Chinese female patients with ischemic stroke. METHODS: A total of 4 442 female patients with ischemic stroke were enrolled in the study from the Chinese National Stroke Registry System. According to the modified Rankin Scale (mRS) score, patients were divided into the group A (with good outcomes, mRS = 0-2) and the group B(with bad outcomes, mRS = 3-6), with the follow-up for 12 months. The risk factors were collected at month 3 and month 12, including age, family history, body mass index (BMI), hypertension, diabetes mellitus (DM), hyperlipidemia, atrial fibrillation (AF), coronary heart disease (CHD), smoking and moderate or heavy alcohol intake. The multivariate logistic regression was performed to determine the prognostic value of those risk factors. RESULTS: Patients in the group B were older than those in the group A [month 3: (71.3 ± 11.4) years old vs (65.5 ± 11.8) years old and month 12: (71.9 ± 11.3) years old vs (65.1 ± 11.6) years old, with both P < 0.001]. Patients in the group B were found to have higher ratio of BMI < 25 kg/m(2) (66.3% vs 62.0%, P = 0.006; 66.6% vs 61.8%, P = 0.002) and more likely to have the history of DM (27.0% vs 23.3%, 26.6% vs 23.6%, respectively; both P < 0.05), AF (18.0% vs 6.2%, 17.9% vs 6.3%, respectively; both P < 0.001) and CHD (21.4% vs 14.4%, 21.8% vs 14.2%, respectively; both P < 0.001) than those in the group A. The multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that women's age (OR = 1.04, 1.05, 95%CI 1.03-1.05, 1.04-1.06, respectively), the histories of DM (both OR = 1.35, 95%CI 1.15-1.58, respectively) and AF(OR = 2.91, 2.84, 95%CI 2.33-3.64, 2.27-3.56, respectively) were significantly associated with the bad outcomes at month 3 and month 12. The history of CHD was associated with the bad outcomes at month 12 (OR = 1.20, 95%CI 1.00-1.43), while the history of hyperlipidemia might improve the outcome at month 12 (OR = 0.75, 95%CI 0.60- 0.94). CONCLUSIONS: The risk factors may have different prognostic value in female patients with ischemic stroke. The diagnosis and treatment for DM, AF and CHD may be helpful to improve the prognosis in Chinese female patients with ischemic stroke.

Enhancing light-matter interaction is a key requisite in the realm of optical sensors. Bound states in the continuum (BICs), possessing high quality factors (Q factors), have shown great advantages in sensing applications. Recent theories elucidate the ability of BICs with hybrid metal-dielectric architectures to achieve high Q factors and high sensitivities. However, the experimental validation of the sensing performance in such hybrid systems remains equivocal. In this study, we propose two symmetry-protected quasi-BIC modes in a metal-dielectric metasurface. Our results demonstrate that, under the normal incidence of light, the quasi-BIC mode dominated by dielectric can achieve a high Q factor of 412 and a sensing performance with a high bulk sensitivity of 492.7 nm/RIU (refractive index unit) and a figure of merit (FOM) of 266.3 RIU-1, while the quasi-BIC mode dominated by metal exhibits a stronger surface affinity in the biotin-streptavidin bioassay. These findings offer a promising approach for implementing metasurface-based sensors, representing a paradigm for high-sensitivity biosensing platforms.

Movement disorders manifest in various hereditary neurodegenerative diseases. We reported a young man who presented with progressive upper limb dystonia, spastic tetraplegia, and ataxia. Whole-exome sequencing (WES) revealed a novel variant, c.2357A > G, in the dynamin domain of OPA1. No mtDNA deletion was detected in muscle by long-range PCR. Atrophy and decreased glucose metabolism of the basal ganglia were discovered. Decreased mtDNA copy number, fragmented mitochondria, slightly impaired oxidative phosphorylation, and increased autophagy were detected in mutant fibroblasts. Evident oxidative phosphorylation impairment and mtDNA deletions were not involved in the pathogenicity of this mutation unlike mutations in the GTPase domain of OPA1.
