AIM: This longitudinal study aimed to evaluate the electromyographic activity of the masseter and temporal muscles in adult women who underwent buccal fat removal. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The sample consisted of 20 healthy adult women with no temporomandibular dysfunction and normal occlusion, who were assessed before, 30, and 60 days after the surgery. The electromyographic signal of the masseter and temporal muscles was captured through mandibular tasks including rest, protrusion, right and left laterality, and maximum voluntary contraction with and without parafilm. The results obtained were tabulated and the Shapiro-Wilk normality test was performed, which indicated a normal distribution. Statistical analysis was performed using the repeated measures test (p < 0.05). RESULTS: Significant differences were observed between time periods in maximum voluntary contraction for the left masseter muscle (p = 0.006) and in maximum voluntary contraction with parafilm for the right temporal (p = 0.03) and left temporal (p = 0.03) muscles. CONCLUSION: Bichectomy surgery did not modify the electromyographic activity of the masseter and temporal muscles during the rest task but may have influenced variations in the electromyographic signal during different mandibular tasks after 60 days of surgery, suggesting compensatory adaptations and functional recovery. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Understanding the impact of buccal fat removal surgery on the stomatognathic system function provides insights into postoperative functional recovery and potential compensatory adaptations, guiding clinical management and rehabilitation strategies for patients undergoing such procedures. BACKGROUND: Many factors can influence chewing, including age. The ageing process causes morphophysiological changes in the body, including in the performance of the stomatognathic system, which directly affect chewing and swallowing. OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence of chewing difficulty in older people in long-term care. METHODS: We searched six electronic databases and the grey literature. Qualitative and quantitative analyses, including risk of bias, were performed on studies that met the inclusion criteria. The meta-analysis of proportions with a random effects model was performed, and heterogeneity was explored by meta-regression. Risk of bias was determined using the Joanna Briggs Institute's Critical Appraisal Checklist. The certainty of evidence was verified using the GRADE tool. RESULTS: Twelve articles were included in the meta-analysis. The pooled prevalence estimate was 35% (95% confidence interval, 0.19-0.54). As heterogeneity still persisted even after sensitivity analysis, the predictors of mean sample age and sample size were meta-regressed to assess whether these covariates explained the variance between effect sizes. The covariable sample size of the study included in the analysis explained 84.3% of the heterogeneity existing in the analysis (R2  = 84.3%; P = .0008). The risk of bias was low in three studies, eight studies had a moderate risk of bias and one study had a high risk of bias. As for the prevalence of chewing difficulty, the GRADE criteria were considered very low. CONCLUSION: About one in three older people in long-term care have difficulty in chewing.

Osteoporosis is a prevalent disease with a high incidence in women at the onset of menopause mainly because of hormonal changes, genetics, and lifestyle, leading to decreased bone mass and risk of fractures. Maintaining bone mass is a challenge for postmenopausal women, with calcium-rich food intake being essential for bone health. Nevertheless, other nutrients such as carotenoids may influence bone metabolism because of their high antioxidant properties. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of the carotenoid lycopene on bone cells and in the microarchitecture of ovariectomized rats employing in vitro and in vivo assays. After 8 weeks of ovariectomy, femurs were removed to isolate bone marrow mesenchymal cells to be cultured in osteogenic medium (sham and ovariectomized/OVX) or with 1 µmol/L lycopene (OVX/Lyc). There were performed assays for alkaline phosphatase activity and its in situ detection, mineralization nodules, and quantitative expression of genes associated with osteogenesis. Daily ingestion of 10 mg/kg of lycopene by oral gavage for 8 weeks after ovariectomy was conducted for stereological evaluation of the number and volume of osteoblasts, osteoclasts, and osteocytes of femur distal epiphysis and for microtomographic evaluation of the bone microarchitecture of the femoral proximal epiphysis. Data were normalized and analyzed by comparison among the groups using one-way ANOVA followed by post hoc tests with the significance level set out at 5%. Results showed that lycopene promoted an increase in ALP in situ detection as well as a significant increase in mineralized nodules deposition and expression of genes Runx2 and Bglap when compared with the OVX group. The administration by oral gavage of lycopene increased the total number of osteoblasts and osteocytes when compared to sham and ovariectomized groups. Additionally, it decreased the volume and number of osteoclasts and also reduced the volume of osteocytes compared to the sham group. These results suggest that lycopene improves bone cell metabolism and bone remodeling with the onset of osteoporosis. Future studies with different concentrations and periods of administration should be carried out to shed further light on it.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this investigation was to evaluate in vivo the response of bone tissue to photobiomodulation when associated with texturized P(VDF-TrFE)/BT in calvaria defects of ovariectomized rats. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Wistar Hannover rats were submitted to ovariectomy/control surgery. Calvaria bone defects of 5-mm diameter were performed after 90 days of ovariectomy. The animals were divided into OVX (without laser (L) and membrane), OVX + P(VDF-TrFE)/BT, OVX + P(VDF-TrFE)/BT + L, and OVX + PTFE + L. It was utilized a low-intensity gallium-aluminum-arsenide laser (GaAlAs) with 780-nm wavelength and 30-J/cm2 energy density in 12 sessions (120 s). Thirty days after the bone defect the animals were euthanized for histological, microtomographic, and molecular evaluation. Quantitative analysis was analyzed by statistical software for p < 0.05. RESULTS: Histological parameters showed bone tissue formation at the borders of all group defects. The association of photobiomodulation and texturized P(VDF-TrFE)/BT was not synergistic and did not show significant changes in morphometric analysis and biomarkers gene expression. Nevertheless, texturized P(VDF-TrFE)/BT membrane enhanced bone repair regardless of the association with photobiomodulation therapy, with an increase of connectivity density when compared to the OVX + PTFE + L group. The association of photobiomodulation therapy and PTFE was synergistic, increasing the expression of Runx2, Alp, Bsp, Bglap, Sp7, and Rankl, even though not enough to reflect significance in the morphometric parameters. CONCLUSIONS: The utilization of texturized P (VDF-TrFE)/BT, regardless of the association with photobiomodulation therapy, enhanced bone repair in an experimental model of osteoporosis.

OBJECTIVE: Stroke is a neurological deficit of cerebrovascular origin, considered a 21st-century epidemic that causes functional changes in the human body. This study aimed to evaluate the stomatognathic system of patients after hemorrhagic stroke through the bite force, thickness, and skin temperature in the region of the masseter and temporalis muscles. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Twenty-four subjects were divided into groups: post-hemorrhagic stroke; with right side of the affected body (n = 12) and without the neurological disorder (n = 12). Maximum molar bite force was verified using a digital dynamometer. Muscle thickness was measured using ultrasound images obtained at rest and during maximal voluntary contraction of the masseter and temporalis muscles. Thermographic camera was used to record the thermographic patterns of the masseter and temporalis muscles. Data were subjected to Student's t-test (P < .05). RESULTS: The maximum molar bite force showed significant differences in the right (P = .04) and left (P = .03) sides, with a reduction in force in the post-hemorrhagic stroke group on the affected and unaffected sides. There was a significant difference (P < .05) in the thickness of the left temporal muscle at mandibular rest (P = .01) between groups. The post-hemorrhagic stroke group clinically presented greater muscle thickness in almost 100% of the muscles evaluated in both clinical conditions. There were no significant differences in skin temperature in the masseter and temporal muscles between the groups. CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest functional changes in the stomatognathic system of subjects after a hemorrhagic stroke, especially concerning molar bite force and masticatory muscle thickness in the temporal muscle (unaffected side).

Intervertebral disc degeneration is a pathological condition associated with the intervertebral disc and is related to functional alterations in the human body. This study aimed to evaluate the maximum molar bite force and masseter and temporal muscles thickness in individuals with intervertebral disc degeneration. Thirty-two individuals were divided into two groups: those with degeneration of intervertebral discs (n=16) and those without degeneration (n=16). The maximum molar bite force (on the right and left sides) was measured using a dynamometer. Masseter and temporal muscle thickness during mandibular task rest and dental clenching in maximum voluntary contraction were analysed using ultrasound. Significant differences in the left molar bite force (p=0.04) were observed between the groups (Student's t-test, p<0.05). The intervertebral disc degeneration group had a lower maximum molar bite force. No significant differences in muscle thickness were observed between the masseter and temporal muscles in either group. However, based on clinical observations, the group with intervertebral disc degeneration presented less masseter muscle thickness and greater temporal muscle thickness in both mandibular tasks. Degenerative disease of the intervertebral discs promoted morphofunctional changes in the stomatognathic system, especially in maximum molar bite force and masticatory muscle thickness. This study provides insight into the interaction between spinal pathology and the stomatognathic system, which is important for healthcare professionals who treat patients with functional degeneration.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis is a chronic degenerative disease that affects motor neurons, thereby promoting functional changes in the human body. The study evaluated the electromyographic fatigue threshold of the masseter and temporal muscles of subjects with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. A total of eighteen subjects were divided into two groups: amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (n=9) and disease-free control (n=9). The groups were equally divided according to gender (7 males, 2 females). The fatigue threshold was analysed using median frequencies obtained during the 5-second window (initial [IP], mid [MP], and final [FP] periods) of electromyographic signalling of the masseter and temporal muscles bilaterally, with reduction in muscle force during maximal voluntary dental clenching. Significant difference (p<0.05) in the left temporal muscle: IP (p=0.05) and MP (p=0.05) periods was demonstrated. The amyotrophic lateral sclerosis group showed a decrease in median frequency of the electromyographic signal of the masseter and temporal muscles compared to the control group. Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis promotes functional impairment of the stomatognathic system, especially at the electromyographic fatigue threshold of the masticatory muscles.

Stroke is a neurological deficit of cerebrovascular origin that promotes physical impairments of adult individuals. The present study is aimed to demonstrate whether hemorrhagic stroke affects the maximum molar bite force. The prospective study carried in Centro Universitario Claretiano de Batatais, Brazil, determined the distribution of the sample into two groups: hemorrhagic stroke group (n=18, median age, 62.5 years) and disease-free group (n=18, median age, 62.0 years), with 10 men and 8 women in each group. Subjects were paired one-to-one (age and body mass index). The dynamometer was used to measure the maximum molar bite force (right and left). All analyses were performed with a significance level of 5% (Student's t-test). Differences were found on the right (p=0.048) and left (p=0.042) molar bite force, with lower bite force (both sides) in hemorrhagic stroke group. The study suggests that hemorrhagic stroke negatively affects the maximum molar bite force and necessitates changes in food intake to nutritious and softer consistency foods.

Natural substances with antioxidant effects may benefit prevention and treatment of people with or prone to bone diseases after menopause, such as osteoporosis. This study aimed to evaluate the in vitro effect of preadministration of yerba mate extract (YM) in the metabolism of MC3T3-E1 osteoblasts exposed to hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). The cells (MC3T3-E1) were cultured in 24-well plates with the concentration of 1 µg/mL yerba mate extract dissolved in culture medium throughout the culture period. Four hours before each experiment, 400 µmol/L H2O2 was added per well to simulate oxidative stress. There were evaluated cell adhesion and proliferation, in situ detection of alkaline phosphatase (ALP), mineralized nodules, and immunolocalization of osteocalcin (OCN), bone sialoprotein (BSP) and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) proteins. The results showed that YM preadministration to H2O2 exposition significatively increased cell adhesion after 3 days as well as proliferation and in situ ALP detection after 10 and 7 days respectively, when compared to H2O2 group. Besides, staining of OCN and BSP proteins was less intense and scattered in poor spread cells with cytoskeletal changes in H2O2 group when compared to control and YM H2O2 group. ALP staining was restrained to intracellular regions and similar in all experimental groups. Our results suggest that preadministration of yerba mate extract may prevent deleterious effects in the morphology and functional activity of osteoblasts exposed to H2O2, which could enable the maintenance of extracellular matrix in the presence of oxidative stress.

The purpose of this study is to analyze the influence of InGaAlP diode laser (660 nm) with or without an odontogenic medium (OM) in the functional activity of OD-21 cells. Undifferentiated OD-21 pulp cells were cultivated with or without OM and divided into four groups (n = 5): nonirradiated control (C -), nonirradiated + OM (C +), irradiated (L -), and irradiated + OM (L +). Laser application was performed in two sessions of a 24-h interval with an irradiance of 11.3 mW/cm2, energy density of 1 J/cm2, and total cumulative energy/well of 4.6 J. Cell proliferation, VEGF-164 expression, mineralization, and expression of Alp, Runx2, and Dmp1 genes, as well as immunolocalization of RUNX2 and MEPE proteins, were evaluated. Data were analyzed by statistical tests (α = 0.05). All studied groups showed a similar increase in cell proliferation with or without OM. After 7 and 10 days, a significatively higher concentration of VEGF-164 in L - group when compared to C - group was observed. A significant increase in mineralized nodules in the L + was noted when compared to C + in the same conditions. Photobiomodulation upregulated significantly Runx2 and Dmp1 expression after 10 days in L - and after 7 days in L + , with downregulation of Dmp1 after 10 days in L + group. Immunolocalization of RUNX2 and MEPE was expressive after 7 days of culture in the cytoplasm adjacent to the nucleus with a decrease after 10 days, regardless of the presence of OM. Photobiomodulation enhances metabolism associated with angiogenesis, gene expression, and mineralization regardless of the odontogenic medium in OD-21 cells.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the stomatognathic system of individuals with controlled systemic hypertension through comparison with a disease-free control group. Seventy individuals (44 female and 26 male) were divided into two groups: a controlled systemic hypertension (n=35) and a disease-free control (n=35). The individuals were evaluated on the basis of masticatory cycle efficiency of the value of the ensemble-averaged integrated linear envelope to the electromyographic signal of the masseter and temporalis muscles in the habitual (peanuts and raisins) and non-habitual chewing (Parafilm M); molar bite force (right and left) and ultrasound images from the bilateral masseter and temporal muscles at rest and maximum voluntary contraction. The data obtained were tabulated and submitted to statistical analysis (p<0.05). There was a significant difference between groups in the habitual (peanuts and raisins) and non-habitual (Parafilm M) chewing with reduced muscle activity to controlled systemic hypertension group. Muscle thickness occurred significant difference between groups at rest and maximum voluntary contraction of the temporalis muscles. There was no significant difference between groups in maximum molar bite force. The present study findings indicate that the controlled systemic hypertension promotes functional changes of the masticatory system, especially with respect to its masticatory efficiency and muscle thickness.

Periodontal disease and osteoporosis are characterized by bone resorption, and researchers have shown an association between these two diseases through increasing loss of systemic bone mass and triggering alveolar bone loss. Green tea is a common and easily accessible beverage, and evidences show that flavonoid epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) could decrease bone loss in pathologies such as osteoporosis and periodontal disease. In order to verify its possible effects and apply them in the treatment and prevention of these diseases, this investigation aimed to evaluate the influence of green tea extract (GTE) on bone metabolism of ovariectomized rats after experimental periodontal disease (EPD) by histological, morphological and microtomographic parameters. Wistar female rats were divided into Sham, Sham + EPD, Sham + EPD + GTE, OVX, OVX + EPD and OVX + EPD + GTE groups. Immediately after surgery, gavage administration of 50 mg/kg of green tea extract (GTE) was performed for 60 days, with subsequent induction of periodontal disease by ligature 15 days before euthanasia. Mandible and femur samples were collected for histological, morphometric and microtomographic analysis. The results were analysed by means of statistical software with significance set at 5%. Histological and morphometric analysis showed a significant decrease in alveolar and femoral trabecular bone loss in groups that received GTE. Microtomographic results showed that trabecular thickness and bone surface density values in alveolar bone interradicular septum of the OVX + EPD + GTE groups were similar to the Sham group. The results obtained suggest that green tea extract may improve bone metabolism in osteoporotic rats with periodontal disease.

Musculoskeletal system impairment is a major cause of functional alterations in subjects with systemic sclerosis. Autologous hematopoietic stem cell therapy (AHSCT) may have an important role in the treatment functional of systemic sclerosis patients. The aim of this pilot study was to assess whether AHSCT interferes with the electromyographic activity of the masseter and temporalis muscles of subjects with systemic sclerosis. Before transplantation, seven subjects with systemic sclerosis (mean age [± SD], 40.1 ± 9.6 years) underwent electromyographic analysis of the masseter and temporalis muscles in mandibular tasks at rest, right and left laterality, protrusion and maximum voluntary contraction. Two months after AHSCT, the subjects re-evaluated using the same methods. Data were analyzed using the repeated-measure test, with p<0.05 considered to be statistically significant. Two months after AHSCT, there was reduction in normalized electromyographic activity in the dental clenching in maximal voluntary contraction, with significant differences, for the left temporal muscle (p=0.04). AHSCT in subjects with systemic sclerosis promotes alterations in stomatognathic system function, especially those related to electromyographic activity of masticatory muscles.

Osteoarthrosis is a disorder of synovial joints, resulting from destruction of the cartilage and subchondral bone. The present study is aimed to investigate the molar bite force, thickness and efficiency of the masseter and temporalis muscles of subjects with osteoarthrosis. A total of forty-eight subjects participated in the study. They were distributed into two groups: with osteoarthrosis (n=24) and asymptomatic controls (n=24). Subjects were analyzed on the basis of maximal molar bite force (right and left side), thickness (mandibular rest and dental clenching in maximal voluntary contraction) and electromyographic activity of masticatory cycles through the linear envelope integral in habitual (raisins and peanuts) and non-habitual (Parafilm M) chewing of the masseter and temporalis muscles. All the data were analyzed statistically using t-test with a significance level of p≤0.05. There was no difference between groups in maximal molar bite force, muscle thickness and non-habitual chewing. Differences were found on the raisins (p=0.02) and peanuts (p=0.05) chewing for right temporal muscle, with reduced masticatory muscle efficiency in osteoarthrosis subjects. This study showed that osteoarthrosis induces negative changes in habitual chewing, highlighting the efficiency of the right temporalis muscles. The greater temporal muscle activity in subjects with osteoarthrosis may compromise chewing and consequently the nutritional status of adult subjects.

Thus, we hypothesized that lycopene may benefit bone tissue metabolism and functional activity of osteoblastic cells from bone marrow of osteoporotic female rats. Wistar rats were ovariectomized and paired with sham animals. In vitro evaluations were performed after 60 days of surgery, when cells were cultured in osteogenic medium and divided in control (C), ovariectomized (OVX) and ovariectomized + 1 µmol/L lycopene (OVXL) groups. Besides, in vivo studies were carried out to evaluate femur bone remodeling by histological and histomorphometric analyses after daily intake of 10 mg/kg of lycopene for 30 and 60 days after ovariectomy. Cell proliferation was significantly higher in OVX and OVXL groups after 10 days of culture. Alkaline phosphatase activity (ALP) was higher in OVXL group in later periods of cell culture, whereas its in situ detection was higher for this group in all experimental periods; nevertheless, mineralization did not show significant differences among the groups. There was a significant upregulation of genes Sp7, Runx2 and Bsp after 3 days and genes Runx2 and Bglap after 10 days from OVXL when compared to OVX. In vivo results demonstrated that daily intake of 10 mg/kg of lycopene for 60 days decreased bone loss in femur epiphysis in ovariectomized rats by maintaining trabecular bone similar to controls. Data obtained suggest that lycopene might benefit the functional activity of osteoblastic cells from ovariectomized rats, as well as avoid further bone resorption.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the healing of critical size defects (CSDs) in calvaria of rats with osteoporosis induced by ovariectomy and treated with leukocyte- and platelet-rich fibrin (L-PRF) associated or not with bovine bone graft (XENO). MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 32 rats underwent a bilateral ovariectomy procedure. After 3 months, one 5 mm in diameter CSD was created in the middle of the calvaria of each animal. In group C, defect was filled with blood clot only. In PRF, XENO, and PRF-XENO groups, defects were filled with 0.1 ml of L-PRF, 0.1 ml of XENO, and a mixture of 0.1 ml of L-PRF plus 0.1 ml of XENO, respectively. L-PRF compressed clots were used to cover the defects in PRF and PRF-XENO groups. Animals were submitted to euthanasia at 30 postoperative days. Histomorphometric, microtomographic, and immunohistochemical analyses were performed. RESULTS: PRF-XENO group presented greater amount of neoformed bone (NB) when compared with XENO group, as well as higher expression of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), osteocalcin (OCN), and bone morphogenetic protein (BMP-2/4) (p < .05). PRF group presented increased amount of NB and higher expression of VEGF, OCN, BMP-2/4, and Runt-related transcription factor 2 (RUNX-2) when compared with group C (p < .05). CONCLUSIONS: (a) The isolated use of L-PRF clot can improve bone neoformation in CSDs in rats with osteoporosis induced by ovariectomy, but seems to lead to decreased amount of bone neoformation when compared to the isolated use of XENO; (b) L-PRF potentiates the healing of XENO in rats with osteoporosis induced by ovariectomy.

BACKGROUND: Parkinson's disease is a neurological disorder that promotes motor changes in the body. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate the impairment of the stomatognathic function regarding molar bite force, electromyographic activity and thickness of the craniocervical muscles in patients with Parkinson's disease in comparison with those in asymptomatic controls. METHODS: Twenty-four subjects were divided into two groups, a Parkinson's disease group (n = 12) and a control group (n = 12). The subjects were evaluated on the basis of molar bite force, electromyographic activity (rest, right and left laterality, protrusion, maximum voluntary contraction) and thickness (rest and maximum voluntary contraction) of the right and left temporal (anterior portion), masseter and sternocleidomastoid muscles. The results were submitted to a multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) to compare the means of the two independent groups, considering diagnosis of Parkinson's disease and craniocervical muscles as independent variables. For the post hoc comparisons, Bonferroni correction was used (P < 0.05). RESULTS: Parkinson's disease group presented lower mean values both sides for maximal molar bite force, significant increases in the electromyographic activities during mandibular tasks, lower mean thickness values of the masseter and sternocleidomastoid muscles, and higher mean thickness values of the temporalis muscles (anterior portion). CONCLUSION: The results suggest that patients with Parkinson's disease may present functional changes of the stomatognathic system, related to bite force, electromyographic activity and thickness of the craniocervical muscles. The greater temporal muscle thickness in Parkinson's disease patients may compromise their daily life activities, especially with respect to chewing and nutrition.

Investigation on functional genome research may contribute to the knowledge of functional roles of different mRNAs and miRNAs in bone cells of osteoporotic animals. Currently, few studies indicate the changes in gene modulation that osteoporosis causes in osteoblastic cells from different sites. Thus, the purpose of this investigation was to evaluate cell viability, alkaline phosphatase activity and modulation of mRNAs/miRNAs in osteoblastic cells from calvaria and bone marrow by means of microarray technology. Wistar female rats were divided in sham operated and ovariectomized groups. After 150 days of ovariectomy, cells were isolated from both sites to perform cell culture. Results showed that calvaria cells from ovariectomized rats had a decrease in viability when compared to control groups and to bone marrow cells from osteoporotic rats after 3 days. Alkaline phosphatase activity decreased in calvaria cells from ovariectomized rats whereas it was increased in bone marrow osteoblastic cells in the same group. Microarray data analysis showed 5447 differentially expressed mRNAs and 82 differentially expressed miRNAs in calvaria cells. The same way, 4399 mRNAs and 54 miRNAs were expressed in bone marrow cells. mRNAs associated with bone metabolism such as Anxa5, Sp7, Spp1, Notch1 were distinctively modulated in both sites, as well as miRNAs such as miR-350, miR-542-3p, miR-204-5p, and miR-30e-3p. The RNA species identified in this study could be further used as targets for treatment or prevention of osteoporosis.

AIM: This study aimed to analyse electromyographic activity, masticatory efficiency, muscle thickness, and bite force of individuals with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD). METHOD: Forty males aged 4-15 years, 20 with DMD and 20 healthy age-, height-, and weight-matched controls, underwent electromyography and ultrasonography of temporalis, masseter, and sternocleidomastoid muscles during postural control of the jaw, mastication, and maximal molar bite force. RESULTS: The normalized electromyography signals showed higher activity in masseter and temporal muscles at rest, during protrusion, left and right laterality, and fatigue condition in the group with DMD than in the comparison group (p≤0.05). For masticatory efficiency of cycles, in analysis of non-habitual chewing of flavourless gum, and habitual chewing of peanuts and raisins, the group with DMD presented lower averages (p≤0.05). For the muscle thickness, the results showed that there was a lower muscle thickness in the group with DMD for all muscles during the rest and maximal voluntary contraction, except for masseter and sternocleidomastoid in the maximal voluntary contraction. In the maximal molar bite force, the group with DMD presented higher values for both sides than the comparison group (p≤0.05). INTERPRETATION: Patients with DMD show muscle changes related to the stomatognathic system, in their activity, bite force, and muscle thickness.

Osteoporosis is a chronic disease that impairs proper bone remodeling. Guided bone regeneration is a surgical technique that improves bone defect in a particular region through new bone formation, using barrier materials (e.g. membranes) to protect the space adjacent to the bone defect. The polytetrafluorethylene membrane is widely used in guided bone regeneration, however, new membranes are being investigated. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of P(VDFTrFE)/BT [poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene)/barium titanate] membrane on in vivo bone formation. Twenty-three Wistar rats were submitted to bilateral ovariectomy. Five animals were subjected to sham surgery. After 150 days, bone defects were created and filled with P(VDF-TrFE)/BT membrane or PTFE membrane (except for the sham and OVX groups). After 4 weeks, the animals were euthanized and calvaria samples were subjected to histomorphometric and computed microtomography analysis (microCT), besides real time polymerase chain reaction (real time PCR) to evaluate gene expression. The histomorphometric analysis showed that the animals that received the P(VDF-TrFE)/BT membrane presented morphometric parameters similar or even better compared to the animals that received the PTFE membrane. The comparison between groups showed that gene expression of RUNX2, BSP, OPN, OSX and RANKL were lower on P(VDF-TrFE)/BT membrane; the gene expression of ALP, OC, RANK and CTSK were similar and the gene expression of OPG, CALCR and MMP9 were higher when compared to PTFE. The results showed that the P(VDF-TrFE)/BT membrane favors bone formation, and therefore, may be considered a promising biomaterial to support bone repair in a situation of osteoporosis.
