BACKGROUND: The current techniques for determining carbon and nitrogen content to provide information about the nutritional status of plants are time-consuming and expensive. For this reason, the objective of this study was to develop an analytical method for the direct and simultaneous determination of nitrogen and carbon elemental content in soybean leaves using near-infrared spectroscopy and compare the performance of conventional (1100-2500 nm spectral range) and portable equipment (1100-1700 nm spectral range). Partial least-squares regression models were developed using 27 soybean leaf samples collected during the 2021 harvest and applied for the simultaneous determination of carbon and nitrogen in 13 samples collected during the 2022 harvest. RESULTS: The root-mean-square error of prediction values for nitrogen and carbon were low (2.42 g kg-1 and 4.37 g kg-1 respectively) for the benchtop method yielded low but higher for the portable method (3.82 g kg-1 and 10.7 g kg-1 respectively). The benchtop method did not show significant differences when compared with the reference method for determining nitrogen and carbon. In contrast, the portable methodology showed potential as a screening method for determining nitrogen levels, particularly in fieldwork. CONCLUSION: The methodologies evaluated in this study were implemented and evaluated under real crop monitoring conditions, using independent sets of calibration and prediction samples. Their utilization enables the acquisition of cost-effective, safe analytical data aligning with the principles of green analytical chemistry. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry.

aste collectors are exposed to a wide variety of bacteria, endotoxins, fungi, allergens, particulate matter, irritating inhalants, and vehicle exhaust, making them more prone to development of chronic diseases. Although several studies described the impact of occupational exposure on the overall health of waste collectors, few investigations were conducted regarding cellular and molecular changes that may occur due to exposure. The aim of this study was to assess biomarkers of oxidative stress such as levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS), lipoperoxidation, total antioxidant capacity (TAC), apoptosis, butyrylcholinesterase (BChE) activity and mitochondrial function (MitoTrackerTM Green FM and MitoTrackerTM Red) using the peripheral blood from individuals occupationally exposed to recyclable solid waste in Southern Brazil. The study included 30 waste collectors and 30 control individuals, who did not perform activities with recognized exposure to biological and chemical substances. Waste collectors were found to exhibit in peripheral blood leukocytes (PBL) higher rates of apoptosis, increased production of ROS, and reduced mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP), associated with decreased total antioxidant capacity (TAC) and elevated activity of BChE in plasma. Therefore, evidence indicates that cytotoxicity, oxidative stress, and inflammatory responses may be involved in the multiplicity of adverse health outcomes related to contaminant exposure in waste collectors. It is thus necessary to implement and/or improve occupational health programs aimed at workers as well as mandatory inspections for the use of personal protective equipment.

INTRODUCTION: The aim of the present umbrella review was to answer the following question: "Does the use of NSAIDs as premedication increase the efficacy of the standard inferior alveolar nerve block on teeth with symptomatic irreversible pulpitis?" MATERIAL AND METHODS: Systematic reviews with and without meta-analyses that evaluated the influence of premedication on anesthetic efficacy of the inferior alveolar nerve in symptomatic irreversible pulpitis of mandibular molars were searched in six electronic databases (MEDLINE/PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, EMBASE, and Grey Literature Reports), without the restriction of language or year of publication. A Measurement Tool to Assess systematic Reviews (AMSTAR 2) was used to evaluate the quality of the included studies. RESULTS: Twelve systematic reviews were included. Only one did not perform a meta-analysis. The AMSTAR 2 overall confidence ranged from very low to high. In general, the main findings of the systematic reviews were that non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (e.g., ibuprofen, oxicam, diclofenac, association of ibuprofen with acetaminophen, and ketorolac) increased the success rate of the inferior alveolar nerve block. CONCLUSIONS: From the "very low" to "high"-quality evidence available, this umbrella review concluded that NSAIDs as premedication acts through cyclooxygenase pathways and block the synthesis of specific prostaglandins that complicate the mechanism of action of the anesthesia, improving its success rate. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs can increase the success rate of the anesthetic technique of inferior alveolar nerve block efficacy in situations of mandibular molars with symptomatic irreversible pulpitis.

Xeroderma pigmentosum (XP) may cause tissue deformation in patients who have undergone oral cancer surgery requiring resection of any part of the mandible. Oral rehabilitation is a pivotal factor in the restoration of function and esthetics. The aim of this study was to report a clinical case of successful prosthetic rehabilitation of a 57-year-old woman who presented with marginal mandibulectomy and a significant reduction in maximal mouth opening after treatment for XP. With her reduced opening and considerable loss of structure and tissue, she had difficulty speaking, swallowing, and altered esthetics. The oral rehabilitation was performed with complete maxilla denture and mandible overdenture retained by 2 implants. This case demonstrates that the rehabilitation with mandible overdentures and complete maxilla dentures provide function and esthetic improvement in the mutilated area for XP patients with marginal mandibulectomies.

The treatment of oral cancer can lead to various oral complications, including oral defects, tissue deformation, and trismus in patients who have undergone oral cancer surgery with resection of any part of the maxillary. Restoring the ability to chew, swallow, and maintain esthetics is essential and a significant challenge. The aim of this study was to report a successful clinical case of preprosthetic surgery and prosthetic rehabilitation of a 65-year-old man who had undergone marginal maxillectomy, resulting in tissue scarring and a significant reduction in maximal mouth opening. The oral rehabilitation was achieved using a conventional removable prosthesis. This case demonstrates that preprosthetic surgery combined with conventional removable prosthesis is an effective strategy for complex rehabilitations providing functional and esthetic improvement in the affected area for patients with marginal maxillectomies resulting from oral cancer.

This study aimed to investigate the impact of heavy metals copper, cadmium, lead, aluminum and nickel, on the growth, physiology, metabolism, and cell cycle of Allium cepa L. Five treatments with increasing concentrations (0, 50, 100, 250, and 500 µM) were applied to the seeds. The results showed that the highest concentrations of copper and cadmium had phytotoxic and biochemical effects on the onion. Additionally, copper concentrations caused an increase in mitodepressive effect and chromosomal abnormalities. Aluminum also induced several chromosomal abnormalities. The study found that Cd > Cu > Pb > Ni > Al and Cu > Al > Ni > Pb > Cd had the highest phytotoxic and cytotoxic potentials, respectively. Furthermore, the UPGMA method revealed three divergent groups. These results suggest that heavy metals, especially copper, have a significant pollution potential when present in high concentrations.

Annexin A1 (AnxA1) is a glucocorticoid-regulated anti-inflammatory protein secreted by phagocytes and other specialised cells. In the endocrine system, AnxA1 controls secretion of steroid hormones and it is abundantly expressed in the testis, ovaries, placenta and seminal fluid, yet its potential modulation of fertility has not been described. Here, we observed that AnxA1 knockout (KO) mice delivered a higher number of pups, with a higher percentage of female offsprings. This profile was not dependent on the male features, as sperm from KO male mice did not present functional alterations, and had an equal proportion of Y and X chromosomes, comparable to wild type (WT) male mice. Furthermore, mismatched matings of male WT mice with female KO yielded a higher percentage of female pups per litter, a phenomenon which was not observed when male KO mice mated with female WT animals. Indeed, AnxA1 KO female mice displayed several differences in parameters related to gestation including (i) an arrested estrous cycle at proestrus phase; (ii) increased sites of implantation; (iii) reduced pre- and post-implantation losses; (iv) exacerbated features of the inflammatory reaction in the uterine fluid during implantation phase; and (v) enhanced plasma progesterone in the beginning of pregnancy. In summary, herein we highlight that AnxA1 pathway as a novel determinant of fundamental non-redundant regulatory functions during early pregnancy.

RESUMO

Carbapenemase-producing bacteria cause difficult-to-treat infections related to increased mortality in health care settings. Their occurrence has been reported in raw sewage, sewage-impacted rivers, and polluted coastal waters, which may indicate their spread to the community. We assessed the variety and concentration of carbapenemase producers in coastal waters with distinct pollution levels for 1 year. We describe various bacterial species producing distinct carbapenemases not only in unsuitable waters but also in waters considered suitable for primary contact.

INTRODUCTION: Several interventions have been tested for cardio-protection against anthracycline-induced cancer therapy-related cardiovascular dysfunction (CTRCD). The role of statins in this setting remains unclear. METHODS: We systematically searched PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, Clinicaltrials.gov, and Web of Science for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing statins versus control (placebo or no intervention) for preventing anthracycline-induced CTRCD. We applied a random-effects model to pool risk ratios (RR) and mean differences (MD) with 95 % confidence intervals (CI). RESULTS: We included seven RCTs comprising 887 patients with planned chemotherapy with anthracycline-based regimens, of whom 49.8 % were randomized to statins. Relative to placebo, statins significantly reduced the incidence of cardiotoxicity/CTRCD (RR 0.46; 95 % CI 0.29 to 0.72; p < 0.001). The left ventricular end-systolic volume was also lower in patients treated with statin (MD -3.12 mL; 95 % CI -6.13 to -0.12 mL; p = 0.042). There was no significant difference between groups in post-anthracycline left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) overall. CONCLUSION: In this meta-analysis of RCTs, statins were significantly associated with a lower incidence of anthracycline-induced CTRCD and attenuated changes in the left ventricular end-systolic volume. Thus, our findings suggest that statins should be considered as a cardio-protection strategy for patients with planned anthracycline-based chemotherapy.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGY RELEVANCE: Commiphora leptophloeos (Mart.) J.B. Gillet (Burseraceae) is a medicinal plant native to Brazil, popularly known as "imburana". Homemade leaf decoction and maceration were used to treat general inflammatory problems in the Brazilian Northeast population. Our previous research confirmed the anti-inflammatory activity of the C. leptophloeos hydroalcoholic leaf extract. AIM OF THE STUDY: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a chronic and relapsing inflammatory disorder of the gut with no ideal treatment to maintain the remissive status. This work aimed to characterize the phytochemical composition and physicochemical properties of the C. leptophloeos hydroalcoholic leaf extract and its efficacy in chemopreventive and immunomodulatory responses in inflammatory bowel disease in non-clinical models. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Mass spectrometry and physicochemical tests determined the phytochemical profile and physicochemical characteristics of the Commiphora leptophloeos (CL) extract. The chemopreventive and immunomodulatory effects of CL extract (50 and 125 µg/mL) were evaluated in vitro in the RAW 264.7 lipopolysaccharide (LPS) induced cell assay and in vivo in the model of intestinal inflammation induced by 2,4-Dinitrobenzenesulfonic acid (DNBS) in mice when they were treated with CL extract by intragastric gavage (i.g.) at doses of 300, 400 and 500 mg/kg. RESULTS: Phytochemical annotation of CL extract showed a complex phenolic composition, characterized as phenolic acids and flavonoids, and satisfactory physicochemical characteristics. In addition, CL extract maintained the viability of RAW macrophages, reduced ROS and NO production, and negatively regulated COX-2, iNOS, TNF-α, IL-1ß, IL-6, and IL-17 (p < 0.05). In the intestinal inflammation model, CL extract was able to downregulate NF-κB p65/COX-2, mTOR, iNOS, IL-17, decrease levels of malondialdehyde and myeloperoxidase and cytokines TNF-α, IL-1ß and IL-6 (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Based on these findings, CL extract reduced inflammatory responses by down-regulating pro-inflammatory markers in macrophages induced by LPS and DNBS-induced colitis in mice through NF-κB p65/COX-2 signaling. CL leaf extract requires further investigation as a candidate for treating inflammatory bowel disease.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the intramucosal retention system in patients' masticatory efficiency and quality of life in this case series. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 3 individuals with maxillectomy were included for rehabilitation with a complete obturator prostheses with an intramucosal retention system (OPI). The complete obturator prostheses was made for 60 days, and electromyography assessments and bite force were applied before, after 30, 60, and 90 days of surgery and prostheses installation. The University of Washington Quality of Life Questionnaire (UW-QoL) and the Obturator Functional Scale (OFS) were also administered at baseline and in the same follow-up periods. The electromyography was evaluated on both sides of the masseter, temporalis, and buccinator muscles while chewing hard and soft food. The maximum bite force was recorded in the central incisors and both sides of the first molar region. RESULTS: Bite force values increased in the first molar region, and muscular electrical activity remained constant. Items related to the taste and swallowing of the UW-QOL impacted. Most OFS questionnaire data responses indicated that patients improved in swallowing liquid foods and appearance. CONCLUSIONS: The rehabilitative capacity improves masticatory efficiency and QoL in adults maxilectomized and rehabilitated with OPI analysis in the study. Further clinical studies should be encouraged to determine the effectiveness of this retentive system.

INTRODUCTION: An effective simulation program allows both the acquisition of surgical skills on the simulated model and the transfer of these skills to a surgical scenario. We designed a forefoot osteotomy training program and sought to determine the transferability to a cadaveric surgical scenario. METHODS: Eleven orthopedic residents and 2 foot and ankle surgeons were included. A foot simulator was used. All residents were instructed on the surgical techniques of Chevron, Akin, and triple Weil osteotomies. Eight junior residents (trainees) were enrolled in a supervised simulation program. Baseline assessment was performed on the simulator with the Objective Structured Assessment of Technical Skills (OSATS) and the Imperial College Surgical Assessment Device (ICSAD). After baseline, trainees completed a training program and had a final evaluation of proficiency on the simulator and on cadaveric specimens. Three senior residents with no simulated training (controls) and experts were assessed for comparison. RESULTS: All trainees improved from a baseline OSATS score of 11 points (9-20) to a final score of 35 points (33-35) in the simulator and 34 points (32-34) in the cadaveric specimen ( P < 0.01). Compared with baseline, the ICSAD results improved in path length (391 [205-544] to 131 [73-278] meters, P < 0.01) and number of movements (2756 [1258-3338] to 992 [478-1908], P < 0.01). The final OSATS and ICSAD scores did not differ from experts ( P = 0.1) and were significantly different from untrained residents ( P = 0.02). CONCLUSIONS: Simulated training of Chevron, Akin, and triple Weil osteotomies in orthopedic residents improved procedural proficiency, enabling successful skill transfer to a surgical scenario in cadavers. Prosthetic rehabilitation is an option available for patients with extensive maxillofacial defects with the ability to restore esthetics and function. The surgical procedure can result in anatomical and functional sequelae leading to functional, psychological and aesthetic disorders. This clinical case report describes the unique and highly-specialized fabrication method of an oral and facial prosthesis for a patient with a near total maxillectomy, excision of upper lip, rhinectomy and radiotherapy for treatment of an extensive malignant neoplasm. Four carefully placed zygomatic implants were used to retain an oral obturator and an external mid-facial prosthesis. A well-functioning maxillofacial prosthesis is essential for improving quality of life, psychological adjustment to cancer and cancer related disabilities, and a positive coping response. The prosthetic rehabilitation allowed the patient's reintegration into society accompanying the satisfactory restoration of aesthetics, phonetics, mastication, and deglutition. Cell-membrane-coated biomimetic nanoparticles (NPs) have attracted great attention due to their prolonged circulation time, immune escape mechanisms and homotypic targeting properties. Biomimetic nanosystems from different types of cell -membranes (CMs) can perform increasingly complex tasks in dynamic biological environments thanks to specific proteins and other properties inherited from the source cells. Herein, we coated doxorubicin (DOX)-loaded reduction-sensitive chitosan (CS) NPs with 4T1 cancer cell -membranes (CCMs), red blood cell -membranes (RBCMs) and hybrid erythrocyte-cancer membranes (RBC-4T1CMs) to enhance the delivery of DOX to breast cancer cells. The physicochemical properties (size, zeta potential and morphology) of the resulting RBC@DOX/CS-NPs, 4T1@DOX/CS-NPs and RBC-4T1@DOX/CS-NPs, as well as their cytotoxic effect and cellular NP uptake in vitro were thoroughly characterized. The anti-cancer therapeutic efficacy of the NPs was evaluated using the orthotopic 4T1 breast cancer model in vivo. The experimental results showed that DOX/CS-NPs had a DOX-loading capacity of 71.76 ± 0.87 %, and that coating of DOX/CS-NPs with 4T1CM significantly increased the NP uptake and cytotoxic effect in breast cancer cells. Interestingly, by optimizing the ratio of RBCMs:4T1CMs, it was possible to increase the homotypic targeting properties towards breast cancer cells. Moreover, in vivo tumor studies showed that compared to control DOX/CS-NPs and free DOX, both 4T1@DOX/CS-NPs and RBC@DOX/CS-NPs significantly inhibited tumor growth and metastasis. However, the effect of 4T1@DOX/CS-NPs was more prominent. Moreover, CM-coating reduced the uptake of NPs by macrophages and led to rapid clearance from the liver and lungs in vivo, compared to control NPs. Our results suggest that specific self-recognition to source cells resulting in homotypic targeting increased the uptake and the cytotoxic capacity of 4T1@DOX/CS-NPs by breast cancer cells in vitro and in vivo. In conclusion, tumor-disguised CM-coated DOX/CS-NPs exhibited tumor homotypic targeting and anti-cancer properties, and were superior over targeting with RBC-CM or RBC-4T1 hybrid membranes, suggesting that the presence of 4T1-CM is critical for treatment outcome.

OBJECTIVE: To answer the question: 'Does the pharmacological management of dental anxiety influence pain occurrence during root canal treatment?' METHODS: Searches on MEDLINE/PubMed, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, Scopus, EMBASE and Open Grey were conducted until September 02, 2022. Only randomised clinical trials were included. The Cochrane risk of bias tool for randomized trials (RoB 2) was used. The overall quality of evidence was assessed through the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation (GRADE) tool. RESULTS: Initial screening resulted in 811 studies. Three hundred seventy-three were excluded for being duplicates. Of 438 eligible papers, ten studies met the inclusion criteria and were selected for full-text reading. Four studies were included in the final analysis. Three studies had a low risk of bias, and one was a high risk. GRADE demonstrated a low quality of evidence. CONCLUSION: There is insufficient evidence to determine whether the pharmacological control of anxiety can influence intraoperative pain occurrence. (EEJ-2022-08-096).

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the performance of the Berlin Questionnaire, the STOP-Bang Questionnaire, and the Epworth Sleepiness Scale in screening for the disease in adults of different age groups by comparing them with polysomnography. METHODS: Cross-sectional study with prospective patient allocation, in which individuals underwent a medical interview, completion of the three screening instruments, and polysomnography. Individuals were categorized into three age groups: 18-39, 40-59, and ≥60 years. The results of the screening instruments were compared to the diagnostic criteria of the International Classification of Sleep Disorders-third edition. Performance was assessed using 2×2 contingency tables, estimating sensitivity, specificity, predictive value, likelihood ratio, and accuracy. Receiver Operating Characteristic curves were also constructed and the area under the curve was estimated for each instrument by age group. RESULTS: We obtained a sample with 321 individuals suitable for analysis. The mean age was 50 years, with a predominance of females (56%). The prevalence of the disease in the overall sample was 79%, more prevalent in males in any age group and more frequent in the middle age group. The analyzes revealed that STOP-Bang performed better, both for the overall sample and for all age groups, followed by Berlin Questionnaire and Epworth Sleepiness Scale. CONCLUSION: In an outpatient setting with individuals with characteristics similar to those in this study, it seems sensible to choose the STOP-Bang as a screening tool for the disease, regardless of age group. Bovine mastitis is an inflammation of the mammary gland in response to invasion by opportunistic agents. Due to the high economic importance of dairy production and the complexity related to animal health, the objective of this work was to identify and evaluate the antibacterial resistance profile of samples of mastitis milk, milking hand and milking equipment from small rural dairy farms belonging to the northwest region of the state of Paraná, Brazil. Five small, non-technical dairy farms in the municipalities of Boa Esperança, Juranda and Tapejara, all belonging to the northwest region of the state of Paraná, Brazil, were selected. The properties had Holstein and/or crossbred herds, carried out a bucket-by-foot milking system and all had the presence of animals with subclinical mastitis confirmed by the California Mastitis Test. Samples of sterile swabs from the milking insufflators, the milking hand and milk samples were collected-and later, isolation tests and phenotypic characterization of the samples, sensitivity tests to antimicrobials and phenotypic tests for the detection of beta-producing strains were performed with extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL), molecular identification of Staphylococcus aureus isolates and mecA gene research. Of the 199 samples collected from the 15 selected properties in the municipalities of Boa Esperança, Tapejara and Juranda, 72 (36.20%) were classified as multiresistant. Isolated from milkers' hands and milking machines, which phenotypically produce extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL), the presence of the mecA gene was also observed in 11 isolates of Staphylococcus spp. of milk samples, machines and milking hands. Mastitis can be spread to the herd through the milking process by the milkers' instruments and hands, and adequate management measures can prevent its transmission and the conscious use of antibiotics decreases the prevalence of multidrug-resistant pathogens. In this work, different pathogenic bacteria were detected in mastitic milk, milking equipment and milking hand with a high percentage (36.20%) of isolates classified as multidrug resistant. In addition, the presence phenotypically (ESBL) and molecularly (mecA gene) of isolates carrying resistance genes was also verified. These results directly reflect on the health of the animals, the health of the workers and the health of the respective environment, which can enable the continuity of the propagation of the etiological agents involved in the mastitis infection. The awareness of producers and workers on these properties about the disease, transmission, sanitary aspects and adequate management and treatment are essential for improving milk production and production efficiency.

This study aimed to evaluate the influence of calcium silicate-based sealers on the bond strength of fiber posts using conventional and self-adhesive resin cement. Sixty single-rooted teeth were selected. The canals were prepared with a reciprocating instrument 40.06. The roots were randomly distributed in six groups (n = 10) according to the strategies for root canal filling and fiber posts cementation: AH Plus/RelyX ARC; AH Plus/RelyX U200; Bio C Sealer/RelyX ARC; Bio C Sealer/RealyX U200; Sealer Plus BC/RelyX ARC; and Sealer Plus BC/RelyX U200. The roots were transversally sectioned, and one slice per post-third was obtained. The push-out test was performed at a crosshead speed of 1mm/min. The failure patterns were described after assessment with a stereomicroscope with a 10× magnification. Bond strength was calculated and analyzed using the ANOVA and Tukey test. AH Plus did not influence the bond strength of fiber posts cemented with conventional (RelyX ARC) or with self-adhesive resin cement (RelyX U200). The lowest bond strength values were obtained when calcium silicate-based sealers were associated with conventional resin cement (Bio C Sealer/RelyX ARC and Sealer Plus BC/RelyX ARC). Except for Sealer Plus BC/RelyX ARC, all groups presented lower bond strength at the apical portion compared to the cervical portion of the post. Adhesive failures between cement and post and cement and dentin were predominant (55.3%). Calcium silicate-based sealers decreased the bond strength of fiber posts cemented with conventional resin cement.

This study aimed to evaluate the influence of ultrasonic activation (UA) on the physicochemical properties of hydraulic calcium silicate-based sealers. Nine experimental conditions were created based on the hydraulic calcium silicate-based sealers (Bio-C Sealer, Sealer Plus BC and Bio Root RCS) and the ultrasonic activation (no activation [NA], 10 seconds, and 20 seconds). Then the experimental groups were BC-NA, BC-10, BC-20, SPBC-NA, SPBC-10, SPBC-20, BR-NA, BR-10, and BR-20. Activation was performed with an ultrasonic insert 20/.01. The mold for the physicochemical analysis was filled and evaluated according to the ANSI/ADA specification nº. 57: initial and final setting time, flow, radiopacity and solubility. Tests were also performed to evaluate pH and calcium ion release with experimental periods of 1, 24, 72, and 168 hours with a pH meter and colorimetric spectrophotometer. Data were analyzed by one-way analysis of variance and post-hoc Tukey tests. The significance level was set at 5%. The time of UA progressively delayed the initial setting time for all hydraulic calcium silicate-based sealers (p < 0.05). Twenty seconds of UA increased the mean flow values of Sealer Plus BC and Bio-C Sealer compared to NA (p < 0.05). UA did not influence the radiopacity and solubility of the tested sealers (p > 0.05). UA for 20 seconds enhanced the pH levels and the calcium ion release of Sealer Plus BC and Bio-C Sealer at 168h (p < 0.05). UA for twenty seconds interferes with some physicochemical properties of hydraulic calcium silicate-based sealers.

OBJECTIVE: To characterize the temporal trend and spatial behavior of leprosy in Brazil, from 2011 to 2021. METHODS: This is an ecological study, with data from the Notifiable Diseases Information System, obtained in June 2022. The annual detection rate of new leprosy cases per 100 thousand inhabitants was calculated. To estimate the trend of the 2011-2019 and 2011-2021 series, the polynomial regression model was used, testing first-, second-, and third-order polynomials. For spatiality, natural breaks were used and, later, the univariate global and local Moran's indexes. A significance level of 5% was adopted and the analyses were performed using SPSS®, GeoDa®, and QGIS® software. RESULTS: The findings indicated an upward trend in the incidence of leprosy in Brazilian regions and in 20 federative units between 2011 and 2019. However, there was a decrease in most of the country when considering the COVID-19 pandemic years. Spatiality showed that the highest detection rates throughout the period were observed in the North, Midwest, and Northeast regions, with high-risk clusters, and the lowest detection rates in the South and Southeast regions, with low-risk clusters. CONCLUSION: The leprosy detection rate showed an upward trend in Brazil between 2011 and 2019, with greater spatial concentration in the North, Northeast, and Midwest regions. Nevertheless, the study raises an alert for the programmatic sustainability of leprosy control in Brazil, considering the drop in the COVID-19 pandemic, presumably due to the influence of the reorganization of the development of initiatives and provision of services in face of COVID-19.
