RESUMO

Long-term changes in dry deposition fluxes (DDF) and health risks for toxic elements (TE) in total suspended particles (TSP) in the Bohai Rim region are important for assessing control effects of pollution sources. Thus, we investigated the trends in DDF and concentrations for TSP and TE and health risks of TE in eight cities in the region from 2011-2020. TSP concentration and DDF showed general downward trends. Compared to the before Clear Air Action Plan (BCAAP, 2011-2012) period, concentration and DDF of TE over the Clear Air Action Plan (CAAP, 2013-2017) period substantially decreased, with the highest decrease rates in Zn, Cd, and Cr. During the study period, non-carcinogenic (HI) and total carcinogenic (TCR) risks for children and adults were 0.09 and 0.04, and 1.54 × 10-5 and 2.65 × 10-5, respectively, with Cr6+ and As being dominant contributors. Compared to the BCAAP period, HI and TCR over the CAAP period decreased by 36.8 % and 32.4 %, respectively. However, their risks increased over the Blue Sky Protection Campaign (BSPC, 2018-2020) period. Potential source contribution function suggested substantial changes in potential risk areas over different control periods, with the BSPC primarily being on land and the Yellow Sea.

Members of the family Vibrionaceae (vibrios) are widely distributed in estuarine, offshore, and marginal seas and perform an important ecological role in the marine organic carbon cycle. Nevertheless, there is little knowledge about whether vibrios play ecological roles in the oligotrophic pelagic area, which occupies a larger water volume. In this study, we investigated the abundance, diversity, and composition of free-living and particle-associated vibrios and their relationships with environmental factors along the water depth in the eastern tropical Indian Ocean (ETIO). The abundance of vibrios in free-living fractions was significantly higher than that of particle-associated fractions on the surface. Still, both were similar at the bottom, indicating that vibrios may shift from free-living lifestyles on the surface to mixed lifestyles at the bottom. Vibrio-specific 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing revealed that Paraphotobacterium marinum and Vibrio rotiferianus were dominant species in the water column, and Vibrio parahaemolyticus (a clinically important pathogen) was recorded in 102 samples of 111 seawater samples in 10 sites, which showed significant difference from the marginal seas. The community composition also shifted, corresponding to different depths in the water column. Paraphotobacterium marinum decreased with depth, and V. rotiferianus OTU1528 was mainly distributed in deeper water, which significantly correlated with the alteration of environmental factors (e.g., temperature, salinity, and dissolved oxygen). In addition to temperature and salinity, dissolved oxygen (DO) was an important factor that affected the composition and abundance of Vibrio communities in the ETIO. Our study revealed the vertical dynamics and preferential lifestyles of vibrios in the ETIO, helping to fill a knowledge gap on their ecological distribution in oligotrophic pelagic areas and fully understanding the response of vibrios in a global warming environment.

In the development of a land-sea coordination management strategy, it is necessary to analyze pollution sources and loads of pollutants entering the sea. This study estimated the sources and transport of total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP) entering Bohai Bay in Tianjin, a lower plain urban watershed, using a SPAtially Referenced Regression On Watershed attributes (SPARROW) model. We calibrated the model using TN and TP data from 26 and 27 sites, respectively. The results demonstrated that the R2 values of TN and TP were both above 0.99. In 2013, the TN load delivered to Bohai Bay was 21,320 ton, which could be traced to various sources: upstream (39%), industrial discharge (10%), sewage discharge (34%), fertilizer application (3%), livestock breeding (7%), aquaculture (5%), and rural communities (2%). The TP load delivered to Bohai Bay was 1504 ton, which originated from upstream (33%), industrial discharge (5%), sewage discharge (21%), fertilizer application (5%), livestock breeding (12%), aquaculture (10%), and rural communities (14%). Rational management of the water resources in streams, enhancement of water circulation between rivers and wetlands, and making full use of the effect of both land and water on pollutant retention are the suitable strategies in watershed management, reducing marine pollution.
