RESUMO
The authors examine ways currently under consideration to link data on the resident population and on immigrants in the Netherlands. "An important development is the introduction of a new computerized population registration system in the near future. One of the features in the new system is that each inhabitant will be identified by a unique identification number. This promises well for opportunities in matching data at the individual level. It is therefore expected that in the new situation it will be possible to better link immigrant stock and flow data."

"Statistics on international migration in the Netherlands do not make a distinction by reason of migration, e.g. family reunification and family formation. Because of the need for information on these types of migration, estimates were made based on demographic characteristics. The estimates show that the number of family reunionists was stable between 1987 and 1991....Recently, the Dutch policy on immigration has become more restrictive. Although information with respect to more recent years is largely lacking, tentative estimates suggest that the 1994 number of family reunionists and family forming immigrants combined has shown a strong decrease compared to 1991." "On 1 January 1992 there were 725 thousand persons residing in the Netherlands who, with respect to their country of birth or their father's or mother's country of birth, had a 'European Union background'. Some 283 thousand of them were born in another Union member state. Among them, the 128 thousand people born in Germany were the most numerous." (SUMMARY IN ENG)

"Indirect estimates were made of family reunification and family formation migration [in the Netherlands], based on such demographic characteristics as nationality, country of birth, age, marital status, year of marriage and family situation after the migration. The estimates are based on the 1992 enumeration from the municipal population registers." (SUMMARY IN ENG)

The author reviews labor migration trends in the Netherlands in the 1960s and the 1990s. "In the 1960s and early 1970s foreign labourers were recruited from Mediterranean countries. The number of immigrants from these countries, for the major part employed in industry, exceeded 30 thousand in some years. In the early 1990s labour migrants were less numerous. [In] the past few years most labour migrants came from Western European countries and other economically developed countries, like the United States and Japan." (SUMMARY IN ENG)

The impact of international migration on the composition of the population of the Netherlands is examined. The authors conclude that "the non-native population shows a considerable variety from a demographic point of view. Differences in composition by age and sex can largely be attributed to differences in migration patterns. Both the size and the period of migration flows have had their influence, as well as the type of migration (labour migration, family reunification, etc.). Apart from the direct influence there are also indirect effects because of demographic events that took place after the migration, like births, marriages and deaths." (SUMMARY IN ENG)

"The estimated number of immigrants [in the Netherlands] for 1994 is 104 thousand, implying a decrease of some 15 thousand compared to the preceding year.... There were approximately 79 thousand emigrants, a slight increase (4 thousand) compared to 1993. The resulting net migration decreased from 44 thousand persons in 1993 to 25 thousand persons in 1994. In 1995 a temporary increase of (net) immigration is expected, due to the increase of the number of asylum seekers in 1994.... After 1995 projected net migration rapidly declines to 35 thousand."
