RESUMO

Four experiments evaluated the use of a complete starter feed (RAMP; Cargill Corn Milling, Blair, NE) for grain adaptation. In Exp. 1, 229 yearling steers (397 ± 28.4 kg BW) were used to compare a traditional adaptation program (CON) with adapting cattle with RAMP in either a 1- (RAMP-1RS) or 2- (RAMP-2RS) ration system. From d 23 to slaughter, cattle were fed a common finishing diet. In Exp. 2, 390 yearling steers (341 ± 14 kg BW) were used to compare accelerated grain adaptation programs with RAMP with 2 control treatments where RAMP was blended with a finishing diet containing either 25 (CON25) or 47.5% (CON47) Sweet Bran (Cargill Corn Milling) in 4 steps fed over 24 d to adapt cattle. Rapid adaptation treatments involved feeding RAMP for 10 d followed by a blend of RAMP and a 47% Sweet Bran finishing diet to transition cattle with 3 blends fed for 1 d each (3-1d), 2 blends fed for 2 d each (2-2d), or 1 blend fed for 4 d (1-4d). From d 29 to slaughter, all cattle were fed a common finishing diet. In Exp. 3, 300 steer calves (292 ± 21 kg BW) were used to compare the CON47 and 1-4d adaptation programs with directly transitioning cattle from RAMP, which involved feeding RAMP for 10 d and then switching directly to F1 on d 11 (1-STEP). From d 29 until slaughter, F2 was fed to all cattle. In Exp. 4, 7 ruminally fistulated steers (482 ± 49 kg BW) were used in a 35-d trial to compare the CON47 and 1-STEP adaptation programs. Ruminal pH and intake data from the first 6 d of F1and first 6 d of F2 were used to compare adaptation systems. Adaptation with RAMP-1RS and RAMP-2RS increased ( < 0.01) G:F compared with cattle adapted using CON in Exp. 1. Feeding RAMP-1RS increased ADG ( = 0.03) compared with CON. Intakes were similar ( = 0.39) among treatments. Daily gain, DMI, G:F, and carcass traits were similar ( > 0.11) among treatments in Exp. 2. Daily gain, DMI, and G:F were not different ( > 0.20) among treatments on d 39 or over the entire feeding period in Exp. 3. When F1 or F2 was being fed, DMI was similar ( ≥ 0.40) for CON47 and 1-STEP in Exp. 4. When F1 or F2 was being fed, 1-STEP cattle had lower average ruminal pH ( ≤ 0.03) and greater time below a pH of 5.3 ( ≤ 0.03). Using RAMP for grain adaptation improved performance compared with traditional adaptation. Rapid adaptation with RAMP decreased pH, but no performance differences were observed between long and rapid RAMP adaptation programs. Therefore, cattle started on RAMP do not require extensive adaptation before feeding a finishing diet with Sweet Bran.

An experiment was conducted with 36 primiparous and 40 multiparous Holstein cows to examine the effects of feeding wet corn gluten feed (WCGF) on 305-d milk production, dry matter (DM) intake, body condition score (BCS), and health. The experimental treatments included: 1) control--WCGF not fed (n = 27); 2) WCGF-L-cows received diets containing WCGF (38% DM basis) during lactation (n = 23); and 3) WCGF-DL--cows received diets containing WCGF (38% DM basis) during the dry period and lactation (n = 26). During the dry period, cows consuming WCGF were observed to have a significant gain in BCS (0.07 +/- 0.06) compared with a loss in BCS in cows fed the control diet (control = -0.11 +/- 0.06 and WCGF-L = -0.04 +/- 0.06). During lactation, there were no differences by treatment on BCS. Cows consuming WCGF during lactation consumed more feed compared with the control: 25.4, 23.8, and 21.2 +/- 0.76 kg/d for WCGF-L, WCGF-DL, and the control, respectively. Milk production was higher for cows consuming WCGF: 35.0, 34.7, and 31.1 +/- 2.1 kg/d for WCGF-L, WCGF-DL, and the control, respectively. No differences were found in either DM intake or actual milk yield between the WCGF-L and WCGF-DL treatments, indicating that prepartum diets did not influence lactational performance. The WCGF diets resulted in significant reductions in the concentration of milk fat (3.94, 3.74, and 4.15 +/- 0.08% for WCGF-L, WCGF-DL, and the control, respectively), but because total milk yield was increased, there were no differences in total milk fat yield. In addition, 3.5% of fat-corrected milk tended to be affected by diet: 38.9, 36.3, and 34.7 +/- 1.93 kg/d for WCGF-L, WCGF-DL, and the control, respectively. The increasing effect of DM intake and milk yield in cows consuming WCGF resulted in a similar efficiency of 3.5% fat-corrected milk production for all treatments, averaging 1.5 +/- 0.09. Total protein yields were significantly higher for cows consuming WCGF diets during lactation: 1.15, 1.10, 1.00 +/- 0.06 kg/d for WCGF-L, WCGF-DL, and the control, respectively. These results indicate that diets may be formulated to contain as much as 37.5% WCGF (DM basis).

Two trials evaluated adapting cattle to a finishing diet using wet corn gluten feed compared with traditional methods using forage. A 33-d grain adaptation metabolism trial (Exp. 1) compared decreasing wet corn gluten feed (Sweet Bran; Corn Milling unit, Cargill Corn Milling, Blair, NE) while increasing corn inclusion (SB) and a traditional grain adaptation system decreasing alfalfa hay while increasing corn with no Sweet Bran inclusion (CON). Ruminal pH, intake characteristics, and 24-h in situ digestibility were evaluated using 8 ruminally fistulated steers (291 kg BW [SD 19]). Steers (4/treatment) were adapted to finishing diets across 4 periods consisting of 5, 7, 7, and 7 d and then fed a finishing diet for 7 d. No period × adaptation diet interactions were observed ( ≥ 0.12). Average ruminal pH decreased ( < 0.01) whereas time and area below a pH of 5.6 increased ( ≤ 0.02) for the SB adaptation system compared with the CON adaptation system. Cattle adapted using SB had greater DMI than cattle adapted using CON ( < 0.01). As steers were adapted to finishing diets, DMI increased ( = 0.01), average ruminal pH decreased ( = 0.05), and time and area below a pH of 5.6 increased ( ≤ 0.04) for both treatments. Ruminal pH for CON steers decreased from 6.59 to 6.12 across periods as corn replaced alfalfa hay whereas ruminal pH decreased from 6.00 to 5.79 for SB steers. Steers adapted using SB had greater ( ≤ 0.05) in situ digestion of adaptation diets than steers adapted using CON for adaptation periods 3, 4, and 5. The SB diets were more digestible than the CON diets when incubated in either CON- or SB-fed steers for adaptation periods 1 and 2 ( < 0.01). Experiment 2 used 240 finishing steers (273 kg BW [SD 14]) to determine performance impacts of using Sweet Bran instead of forage to adapt cattle to finishing diets. Steers were fed either decreasing Sweet Bran inclusion while increasing corn (SB) or decreasing alfalfa hay inclusion while increasing corn (CON). Treatments were applied only during grain adaptation (26 d) and all steers were finished on a common diet containing 35% Sweet Bran for an additional 147 d. Steers adapted using SB had greater ( ≤ 0.01) final BW, ADG, G:F, and HCW compared with steers adapted using CON, even though treatments differed only the first 26 d. Grain adaptation treatment had no effect ( ≥ 0.13) on carcass quality. These results indicate that Sweet Bran can be used to adapt cattle to finishing diets instead of forage and improves ADG and G:F while decreasing the forage needs of feedlots.

The study of grain hybrids with faster or more extensive rates of ruminal starch fermentation has been a key research area. Because grain sorghum starch is generally regarded as less accessible to enzymatic degradation than starch in other grains, it has received the greatest research emphasis. However, all grains have been evaluated to some extent. Grain sorghum hybrids appear to be more variable in digestibility, in vitro and in vivo, and in rate of starch fermentation than are corn hybrids. The greater variation may be partially because grain sorghum hybrids are developed and evaluated under more stressful environmental conditions (high temperature and limited water conditions) than are corn hybrids. In vitro and in vivo studies indicate that differences in grain hybrids exist, but these differences may not totally explain differences in cattle performance. The response to feeding high-lysine corn to cattle has been variable. Although high-lysine corn supplies more lysine in the diet, lysine flow to the abomasum was not increased. Hybrids selected for increased lysine content have been shown to have faster in vitro rates of starch digestion, suggesting that improvements in animal performance may be related to the indirect selection for improved energy utilization. In one study in which high-oil corn was evaluated, feed conversion was not improved compared with a control corn diet. At the present time additional studies in which other genetic modifications of grain hybrids are evaluated are in progress, but the results have not been published.

Sixty mixed British breed yearling steers (237 kg) were used each year for 2 yr to study the effects of rate of gain during the winter on subsequent pasture and finishing performance. Winter gains of .28, .38 and .50 kg/d (P less than .05) were established for the low, medium and high gain treatments, respectively. Daily gain of steers on pasture was reduced (P less than .01) 81 g for each 100-g increase in winter daily gain. No differences in BW were observed among the treatment groups after grazing summer pasture. Wintering performance did not affect finishing performance. Daily gains during the finishing period increased slightly as pasture gain decreased due to increased feed intake, but efficiency was not altered. These data suggest that within this range of ADG during the winter and under the conditions of this study, it was not beneficial to winter cattle for an ADG more than .28 kg/d.

Two finishing trials were conducted to measure the response of cattle adjusting to high-concentrate diets to dietary monensin level. In trial 1, 54 individually fed Hereford-Angus steers (312 kg), previously fed a two-thirds corn silage: one-third corncob-based diet, were allotted in a 2 X 3 factorial arrangement of treatment with tylosin (0, 11 mg/kg) and monesin (0, 11, 33 mg/kg) fed during a 28-d, grain-adaptation period (fed 75% concentrate for 6 d and then fed 95% concentrate). After 28 d, all steers were continued on their respective levels of tylosin and 33 mg/kg monensin for the remaining 119 d. Daily intake patterns indicated digestive upset in all treatments during adjustment to the 95%-concentrate diet. Blood samples taken during the first 28 d revealed no differences in acid-base status in response to monensin level; however, all steers exhibited reduced (P less than .01) pH and HCO3 and increased (P less than .01) lactate after 4 d on a 75%-concentrate diet. In the initial 28 d, intake decreased (linear P less than .05) as the level of monensin increased. In the total finishing period, however, increasing the level of monensin fed during grain adaptation decreased (linear P less than .05) intake and tended to decrease (linear P = .20) gain with no effect on feed efficiency.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Eight ruminally, duodenally, and ileally fistulated sheep were used to study the effects of protozoa on ruminal fermentation and starch digestion in the rumen and intestines. The experimental diet (75% grain DM basis) was based on a mixture of 67% high-moisture corn (HMC) and 33% dry-rolled grain sorghum (DRGS). Protozoa were reduced from 51,286 to 13,987 organisms/mL of ruminal fluid by feeding a diet (13 d) containing 9% tallow and monensin at 27 mg/kg (DM basis). Three sheep were defaunated by intraruminal infusions of lactic acid (20 to 30 g/d) and one sheep by washing the rumen and heating ruminal contents (60 degrees C for 20 min). No differences were observed in DM or starch intake, ruminal fluid pH, lactate concentration, or total tract starch digestibility. Molar proportion of acetate was reduced (48.6 vs 58.3%; P < .01) and propionate was increased (32.2 vs 23.4%; P < .03) by defaunation. Total VFA tended (P = .20) to be lower in faunated sheep (118.5 vs 139.2 mM). In situ rate of starch digestion of HMC (22.3 vs 14.7 %/h; P < .02) and DRGS (5.1 vs 3.3 %/h; P < .009) was increased by defaunation. Starch digestibility (percentage of intake) in the rumen was increased (P < .001) by defaunation (84.2 vs 93.7%) and was reduced (P < .002) in the small intestine (5.2 vs 13.6%). Defaunation increased (P < .03) amylolytic activity (.40 vs .17 units/mg of protein; P < .03) and osmotic pressure (321 vs 245 mOsm/kg; P < .006).(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

A model to evaluate economic criteria involved when cattle are raised on high-forage diets prior to finishing or finished directly after weaning was developed using data from two experiments. In Exp. 1, each year for 3 yr, 136 Charolais-cross calves were weaned and allotted to either an intensive system, in which they were immediately finished on a high-grain diet, or an extensive system, in which they were wintered on crop residues, grazed on summer pasture and finished on a high-grain diet. In Exp. 2, 160 British breed steers were wintered, in one of eight different wintering systems utilizing crop residues, using supplemental protein and(or) alfalfa hay. After wintering, the steers grazed summer pasture and then were finished on a high-grain diet. Overall cost of gain and final "break-even" price were lower for cattle finished through the extensive system except when the price of corn was very low in relationship to other inputs. Interest costs were higher for cattle in the extensive system. Increasing the feeder calf purchase price had almost no effect on differences between the systems. Corn price and purchase price affected both systems similarly, whereas interest rate, wintering yardage and finishing yardage affected each system differently. Because of the additional weight produced through the extensive system, it yielded lower final "break-even" prices in most situations.

Charolais-sired calves from three groups of beef cows, similar in growth potential and mature size but different in genetic potential for milk production (5.6, 7.7, 9.0 kg/d; low, medium, and high, respectively), were allotted to two beef production systems each year for 3 yr. At weaning, calves in an intensive (Int) system went directly into the feedlot for finishing (236 d); calves in an extensive (Ext) system were wintered on corn residues (195 d), grazed pasture (115 d) and then were finished (122 d). Postweaning effects of increased weaning weight due to increased level of milk were small and not affected by growing-finishing system. Only the steer calves from the low milk-producing cows showed evidence (P less than .01) of compensatory growth postweaning in response to reduced levels of milk during the suckling phase. Cattle from the Ext system were heavier (P less than .01) before (388 vs 233 kg) and after (595 vs 531 kg) the finishing phase than Int system cattle. During finishing, cattle from the Ext system made more rapid gains (1.70 vs 1.36 kg/d) and consumed more feed (12.4 vs 8.5 kg/d, 2.52 vs 2.19% of average BW) but were less efficient (.137 vs .160, gain/feed) than cattle from the Int system (P less than .05). Extensive systems of beef production produced more total kilograms of beef per animal but they were 196 d older at slaughter.

In situ digestion and growth studies were conducted to determine the effects of adding blood to feather meal. In the in situ and digestion studies, soybean meal (SBM), blood meal (BM), feather meal (Fth) and two combinations of 55% raw blood and 45% feathers (RB + F) were used. Feathers and blood were combined either before or after steam hydrolysis of feathers. Ruminal escape protein of Fth was greater than that of SBM but less than that of BM (P less than .10) determined in situ after 12 h of incubation. Ruminal in situ protein digestion was lower (P less than .10) than for the other treatments (P less than .10) when blood was hydrolyzed with feathers. Total tract digestibility was similar (P greater than .10) for SBM, BM and the mixture of RB + F when the blood was not hydrolyzed. In the growth study, calves were supplemented with urea, SBM, BM, Fth or a combination of BM and Fth (BM + Fth; each supplied an equal portion of supplemental protein). The slope ratio technique was used to evaluate the protein sources. The most efficiently used protein sources were BM and BM + Fth compared to SBM and Fth (P less than .05). There was a numerical but not significant (P greater than .1) complementary effect of adding BM to Fth. Soybean meal and Fth had similar protein efficiencies (P greater than .20). Estimated amino acid flow to the small intestine based on in situ amino acid degradation suggested that the complementary effect observed for BM + Fth was due to BM supplying lysine and Fth providing sulfur amino acids.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Growth, digestion and in situ studies were conducted to determine the protein value of hydrolyzed feather meal (Fth) for growing ruminants. Dacron bags containing blood meal (BM), Fth, corn gluten meal (CGM) and soybean meal (SBM) were suspended in the rumen of two steers for 12 h to estimate escape protein. The escape protein value for Fth, 69.1%, was less than that for BM (82.8%) and CGM (80.4%; P less than .05) but greater than that for SBM (26.6%; P less than .05). Apparent protein digestion by lambs was similar (P greater than .10) for isonitrogenous diets containing urea (U), BM, Fth, CGM and SBM. Amino acid contents of the protein sources before vs after a 12-h ruminal in situ digestion were similar (P greater than .10). In a growth study, a basal diet of 80% ensiled corncobs and 20% alfalfa was fed to 60 individually fed crossbred steers (215 kg BW). Steers were supplemented with U, BM, Fth, 1/2 BM:1/2 Fth, 1/2 BM:1/2 CGM and 1/3 BM:1/3 Fth:1/3 CGM (protein basis). Protein sources were fed at 30, 45 and 60% of the supplemental N with urea supplying the remainder. Protein efficiency was calculated using the slope ratio technique. Protein efficiency was similar (P greater than .10) for BM- and Fth-supplemented calves. Protein efficiencies were similar (P greater than .10) for BM:CGM, BM:Fth and BM:Fth:CGM combinations. These data indicate the Fth is a digestible high escape protein source that is useful in diets for growing ruminants.

Interactions among grain type (grain sorghum, corn or wheat), roughage level and monensin level were studied in four feedlot trials using pen-fed crossbred yearling cattle. In Trial 1, cattle fed high-moisture corn (HMC) were more efficient (.1537 vs .1406 for gain/feed; P less than .01) than cattle fed dry-rolled grain sorghum (DRGS). As level (0, 3, 6, 9%) of dietary roughage was increased, feed efficiency (gain/feed) decreased (.1566, .1461, .1479, .1382; linear, P less than .01). In Trial 2, a grain type (DRGS; dry-rolled corn, DRC; dry-rolled wheat, DRW) x roughage level interaction was observed for daily gain and feed efficiency. Feed efficiency (gain/feed) was decreased when roughage was added to diets containing DRC (.1608 vs .1750) or DRGS (.1674 vs .1465), but not to the diet containing DRW (.1664 vs .1607). In trial 3, a grain type x roughage level x monensin level interaction (P less than .08) was observed for feed efficiency. The addition of 27.5 mg of monensin per kilogram of the 0% roughage-DRC diet tended to improve feed efficiency (.1633 vs .1531), but the addition of monensin to the 7.5% roughage-DRC diet tended to depress feed efficiency (.1476 vs .1575). The addition of either roughage (.1493 vs .1420) or monensin (.1500 vs .1413) to the DRW diet improved feed efficiency. In Trial 4, cattle fed a combination of 75% DRW and 25% DRC were more efficient (.1618 vs .1591; P less than .06) than cattle fed DRC. As level of roughage (0, 3.75, 7.5%) increased, feed efficiency decreased linearly (.1645, .1599, .1569; P less than .0001). Monensin had no effect on feed efficiency. The value of feeding roughage and monensin was variable both across grain types and within similar grain types.

Two finishing trials, one laboratory trial and one metabolism trial were conducted with the following objectives: 1) to determine the associative effects of feeding high-moisture corn (HMC) with either dry-rolled grain sorghum (DRGS) or dry-rolled corn (DRC) and 2) to evaluate HMC when harvested at different moisture levels, stored in different structures, or fed as whole or rolled HMC. In Trial 1, yearling steers (BW, 328 kg) were fed diets containing mixtures of HMC and DRGS. As level (0, 33, 100%, as percentage of grain DM) of DRGS increased, ADG (P less than .03) and gain/feed (P less than .001) decreased linearly; gain/feed tended to be affected quadratically (P = .14). In Trial 2, yearling steers (BW, 382 kg) fed HMC, stored whole in an upright, oxygen-limiting silo and rolled coarsely before feeding, gained faster (1.46 vs 1.36 kg/d) and more efficiently (.142 vs. .131 gain/feed) than steers fed whole HMC (P less than .01). In Trial 3, as length of storage of bunker HMC increased, in vitro rate of starch digestion and soluble N content increased (20.4 and 36.8%, respectively) and grain pH decreased (10.9%). In Trial 4, steers fed HMC or a mixture of 75% HMC with 25% DRGS had similar ruminal pH throughout a grain adaptation period, but total ruminal VFA were greater (P less than .005) for steers fed HMC alone. These data are interpreted to suggest that feeding a mixture of HMC, ground and stored in a bunker or silo bag, with DRGS will result in a 3.2% associative effect. However, no associative effects were measured when a mixture of HMC, stored whole and fed whole or rolled, and DRC were fed.

Five crossbred steers (347 kg) were surgically fitted with rumen fistulae, hepatic portal, abdominal aorta and mesenteric catheters to measure organic acid absorption from the gut during acute [intraruminal glucose, 12 g/kg body weight (G)] or subacute [ad libitum 70% concentrate diet (C)] acidosis. Samples were taken at time 0, then every 2 h for 48 h after a switch from an alfalfa diet to C, or dosing with G. Steers receiving C received G 1 wk later so that five steers provided four observations/treatment. Blood flow rates were determined by infusion of para-amino hippuric acid (PAH) and averaged 767.8 and 712.5 liters/h for C and G, respectively. Animals consuming C averaged 13.6 kg dry matter from 0 to 24 h and 1.5 kg from 24 to 48 h. Rumen pH declined to 4.2 for G compared with 6.0 for C. Blood pH and HCO3 showed only slight depressions for G from 16 to 26 h, the period of lowest rumen pH. Rumen L-lactate concentration averaged 53.4 mM (peak 77 mM) and 2.1 mM for G and C, respectively. Rumen D-lactate concentration averaged 30.2 mM (peak 47 mM) for G and 1.2 mM for C. Net portal absorption of L-lactate averaged 96.6 and 164.4 mmol/h, whereas that of D-lactate averaged 10.5 and 71.8 mmol/h for C and G, respectively. Mean net portal volatile fatty acid absorptions were 442.8, 192.1, 53.8, 5.3 and 10.4 mmol/h (C) and 100.0, 47.2, 9.4, .98 and .78 mmol/h (G) for acetate, propionate, butyrate, isobutyrate and isovalerate, respectively.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Yearling and calf finishing trials (replicated over 2 yr) evaluated the feeding value of wet distillers byproducts (wet distillers grains and thin stillage). An additional trial estimated the amount of thin stillage bypassing the rumen when consumed by drinking. Yearlings were 5, 10, and 20% more efficient (linear, P < .01; quadratic, P = .05), whereas calves were 2, 6, and 14% more efficient (linear, P < .01) when fed 5.2, 12.6, and 40.0% (DM basis) wet distillers byproducts, respectively, compared with cattle fed a 79% dry-rolled corn diet. Cattle fed 5.2 or 12.6% wet distillers byproducts, or the dry-rolled corn diet, received similar amounts of protein (crude or metabolizable), which exceeded the metabolizable protein requirement of all cattle. Therefore, differences in efficiency were attributed to differences in energy utilization of the diets. Wet distillers byproducts fed at 5.2, 12.6 and 40.0% contributed 80, 62, and 47% more net energy for gain than corn when fed to yearlings and 17, 33, and 29% more net energy for gain than corn when fed to calves, respectively. Wet distillers byproducts averaged 169% the energy value of corn (2.53 Mcal of NEg/kg) when fed to yearlings and 128% the energy value of corn (1.96 Mcal of NEg/kg) when fed to calves. The increased energy values cannot be explained by increased digestibility, but they may be due to a combination of factors (reduced acidosis, increased energy utilization, yeast end products, etc.) that increase the net energy content of distillers byproducts. Metabolizable protein and amino acid requirements for growing cattle were estimated using data from 11 research trials. A total of 543 steers were individually fed a high-roughage diet supplemented with protein at several levels above a urea supplement control. The mean weight for all animals was 253 kg, with a range in mean initial to final weights of 200 to 316 kg, respectively. Daily gain ranged from -.04 to .89 kg. Metabolizable protein for each treatment group was calculated at the point at which the protein requirement was met. The sum of dietary escape protein (basal and supplemental) and calculated microbial protein represented metabolizable protein supplied per test protein source analyzed in each trial. Daily gain was regressed against calculated metabolizable protein flow using weighted regression analysis (r2 = .69, n = 45) to determine the metabolizable protein requirements for maintenance (3.8 x BW.75 g/d, where BW is expressed in kilograms) and growth (305 g/kg of live weight gain). Calculated metabolizable amino acid requirements as a percentage of metabolizable protein for a 253-kg animal gaining .49 kg/d were as follows: methionine, 3.0%; total sulfur amino acids, 5.8%; lysine, 8.0%; tryptophan, 1.0%; threonine, 5.2%; valine, 5.7%; isoleucine, 5.6%; leucine, 6.9%; phenylalanine, 3.9%; and histidine, 1.6%. The proposed requirements were based on live animal gain and intake of metabolizable protein and should represent the needs of the growing beef animal.

Three trials were conducted to evaluate the energy value of hominy feed in finishing diets for ruminants. Hominy feed contained 56.9% starch, 25.2% NDF, 11.1% CP, and 5.3% fat (DM basis). In all trials, hominy feed replaced dry-rolled corn. As the level of hominy feed or ground corn increased in a lamb digestion trial, DM digestibility decreased (P < .01); however, starch digestibility increased (P = .09). Hominy feed and ground corn interacted (linear, P = .08) with respect to NDF digestibility. As the level of ground corn increased, NDF digestibility decreased (linear, P = .10). In a finishing trial, yearling heifers were fed either hominy feed with or without fat added to hominy feed at 0, 13.3 (.67% added fat), 26.7 (1.33% added fat), and 40.0% (2.0% added fat) of diet DM. Fat addition did not interact with hominy feed level. Heifers fed 13.3 or 26.7% hominy feed or hominy feed + fat consumed more DM (P = .10) than heifers fed the 0 or 40.0% diets; however, gain and feed efficiency were similar. In a second finishing trial, steers fed 40% (diet DM) hominy feed consumed more (P = .05) DM, but daily gain and feed efficiency were similar to those of cattle fed dry-rolled corn. Steers fed all-concentrate diets were more efficient (P < .01) than cattle fed 7.5% forage. Results indicated that expeller-extracted hominy feed contained 1.35 Mcal of NEg/kg, or 87% of the energy of corn, when included at levels up to 40% of cattle finishing diets, despite its containing 20% less starch than corn.

Four experiments were conducted to evaluate the effect of a soybean hull, soy lecithin, and soapstock mixture on ruminal fiber and protein digestion, growth efficiency of beef calves, and lactational performance of dairy cattle. An initial mixing experiment determined that a 4:1 ratio (DM basis) of soy lecithin:soapstock could be added to soybean hulls at 15% (wt/wt, DM basis); this mixture had acceptable mixing and handling characteristics. Dietary addition of a mixture of 85% soybean hulls, 12% soy lecithin, and 3% soapstock (DM basis; SLS) to provide 0, 3, 5, or 7% supplemental fat resulted in a linear (P < .01) decrease in in situ rate of ruminal NDF digestion with no effect on rate of CP digestion. Daily gain, DMI, and feed efficiency (kilograms of gain/kilogram of DMI) of growing beef calves were not affected (P > .10) as graded levels of SLS replaced corn grain. However, as graded levels of SLS replaced soybean hulls, daily gain and feed efficiency increased linearly (P < .01). Based on the results of these trials, Holstein dairy cattle were fed four isonitrogenous and isoenergetic diets that contained either high levels of nonfiber carbohydrates (43%) and no added fat, 1% ruminally inert fat, a 6% level of SLS, or a 12% SLS level (all on DM basis). Efficiency of 4% fat-corrected milk production (kilograms of milk/kilogram of DMI) was greatest for cows fed SLS at 6% of dietary DM. The SLS mixture was an excellent source of fiber and vegetable fat, comparable in feeding value to corn grain, for inclusion in the diets of beef calves and dairy cows.

Two trials were conducted to determine the effect of corn processing method on performance and carcass traits in steers fed finishing diets containing wet corn gluten feed (WCGF). In Trial 1, 480 steer calves (303 kg initial BW) were fed eight finishing diets: 1) dry-rolled corn (DRC) without; and 2) with 32% (DM basis) WCGF; 3) steam-flaked corn (SFC) without; and 4) with WCGF; 5) a combination of DRC and SFC without WCGF; 6) finely-ground corn (FGC) with WCGF; 7) high-moisture corn (HMC) with WCGF; and 8) whole corn (WC) with WCGF. Feeding WC + WCGF increased (P < 0.10) DMI and decreased gain:feed compared with all other treatments. Feeding DRC + WCGF increased (P < 0.10) DMI and decreased (P < 0.10) gain:feed compared with treatments other than WC + WCGF. Steers on treatments that included WCGF gained similarly, regardless of corn processing method, and at a rate 6% faster (P < 0.10) than steers fed diets that did not include WCGF. Gain:feed did not differ among steers fed SFC, SFC + WCGF, SFC + DRC, and HMC + WCGF. Steers fed SFC or SFC + WCGF were more efficient (P < 0.10) than steers fed DRC or FGC + WCGF. In Trial 2, 288 steer calves (382 kg initial BW) were fed six finishing diets: 1) DRC without; and 2) with 22% (DM basis) WCGF; 3) SFC without; and 4) with WCGF; 5) finely rolled corn (FRC) with WCGF; and 6) HMC corn with WCGF. Steers fed DRC + WCGF or FRC + WCGF consumed more DM (P < 0.10) than steers fed DRC, SFC, or SFC + WCGF. Feed intake did not differ between steers fed SFC + WCGF and HMC + WCGF. All treatment groups receiving WCGF consumed more DM (P < 0.10) feed than steers fed DRC or SFC without WCGF. Steers fed SFC + WCGF gained 8% faster (P < 0.10), and steers fed DRC 9.5% slower (P < 0.10) than steers receiving all other treatments. Daily gains did not differ among other treatment groups. Steers fed SFC or SFC + WCGF gained 10% more (P < 0.10) efficiently than all other treatment groups. Feed efficiency did not differ among steers fed DRC, DRC + WCGF, FRC + WCGF, and HMC + WCGF. Estimates for the NEg of WCGF calculated from animal performance indicated that WCGF contained approximately 25.3% more energy when fed with SFC than when fed with DRC. In general, more intensively processing corn improved gain:feed in finishing diets containing WCGF.

Relationships of gain, intake, feed efficiency and severity of liver abscesses were evaluated in 12 experiments involving 566 head of individually fed cattle. Concentrate level in the diets ranged from 64 to 95%. In all experiments, livers were scored as unabscessed (0), one or two small abscesses (A-), two to four small active abscesses (A) or one or more large, active abscesses (A+). Based on homogeneity of variances, nine of the experiments were divided into two groups. In one group (four experiments) the incidence of liver abscesses was 32.1% and no significant (P greater than .25) effects of liver abscess severity score on feedlot performance variables were found. In the second group (five experiments), the incidence of liver abscesses was 77.7%. In the second group, liver abscess severity score affected final live weight (P less than .10), hot carcass weight (P less than .0001), dry matter intake (P less than .10), daily gain based on live weight recorded 24 h prior to slaughter (P less than .10), daily gain based on live weight estimated from hot carcass weight with a 62% dressing percentage (P less than .0001), feed efficiency using final live weight estimated from hot carcass weight (P less than .0001) and dressing percentage (P less than .01). In all cases, performance means for cattle with A+ liver scores were the only ones that differed significantly from those of non-abscessed cattle.
