RESUMO

BACKGROUNDS & AIMS: The nutritional evaluation of pancreatic cancer (PC) patients lacks a gold standard or scientific consensus, we aimed to summarize and systematically evaluate the prognostic value of nutritional screening and assessment tools used for PC patients. METHODS: Relevant studies were retrieved from major databases (PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, Cochrane Library) and searched from January 2010 to December 2023. We performed meta-analyses with STATA 14.0 when three or more studies used the same tool. RESULTS: This analysis included 27 articles involving 6,060 PC patients. According to a meta-analysis of these studies, poor nutritional status evaluated using five nutritional screening tools Prognostic Nutritional Index (PNI), Geriatric Nutritional Risk Index (GNRI), Controlling Nutritional Status Score (CONUT), Nutrition Risk Screening (NRS2002) and Glasgow Prognostic Score (GPS) was associated with all-cause mortality in PC patients. But Modified Glasgow Prognostic Score (mGPS) did not. Of all tools analyzed, CONUT had the maximum HR for mortality (HR = 1.978, 95%CI 1.345-2.907, P = 0.001). CONCLUSION: All-cause mortality in PC patients was predicted by poor nutritional status. CONUT may be the best nutritional assessment tool for PC patients. The clinical application value of Short Form Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA-SF), Generated Subjective Global Assessment (SGA) and Patient-generated Subjective Global Assessment (PG-SGA) in PC patients need to be confirmed. In order to improve patients' nutritional status and promote their recovery, nutritional screening tools can be used. REGISTRATION: This systematic review was registered at the International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews (PROSPERO) (number CRD42022376715).

RESUMO

Self-disclosure (SD) is a common psychological intervention that involves expressing the patient's feelings and thoughts. The purpose of this study was to assess the effectiveness of different themes of SD on cancer patients. We searched eight databases including PubMed, Cochrane Library Trials, Web of Science, CINAHL, Medline, EMBASE, CNKI and Wanfang from inception to July 2022. Other sources included clinical data registers. The Cochrane Collaboration's tool was used to assess the risk of bias in the included studies. RevMan Analysis software 5.3 was used for data analysis. The protocol of this meta-analysis has been registered on PROSPERO (CRD42022339661). Twenty-two RCTs studies were included. The pooled results demonstrated that self-regulation self-disclosure (SRD) had significant effects on patients' sleep quality, benefit-finding, anxiety and quality of life (QOL), whereas emotional disclosure (ED) did not. Furthermore, enhanced self-regulation self-disclosure (ESRD) or cancer-related self-disclosure (CD) significantly improved patients' QOL, although health education self-disclosure (HED) and positive self-disclosure (PD) did not. Our study suggests that different themes of SD have varied effects on patients, but it remains unclear which themes to use at what point in time. Future research should investigate what themes of SD are adopted at different points in time and the duration of different periods.

RESUMO

A full selectivity control over the catalytic hydrogenation of nitroaromatics leads to the production of six possible products, i.e., nitroso, hydroxylamine, azoxy, azo, hydrazo or aniline compounds, which has however not been achieved in the field of heterogeneous catalysis. Currently, there is no sufficient evidence to support that the catalytic hydrogenation of nitroaromatics with the use of heterogeneous metal catalysts would follow the Haber's mechanistic scheme based on electrochemical reduction. We now demonstrate in this work that it is possible to fully control the catalytic hydrogenation of nitroaromatics into their all six products using a single catalytic system under various conditions. Employing SnO2-supported Pt nanoparticles facilitated by the surface coordination of ethylenediamine and vanadium species enabled this unprecedented selectivity control. Through systematic investigation into the controlled production of all products and their chemical reactivities, we have constructed a detailed reaction network for the catalytic hydrogenation of nitroaromatics. Crucially, the application of oxygen-isolated characterization techniques proved indispensable in identifying unstable compounds such as nitroso, hydroxylamine, hydrazo compounds. The insights gained from this research offer invaluable guidance for selectively transforming nitroaromatics into a wide array of functional N-containing compounds, both advancing fundamental understanding and fostering practical applications in various fields.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: This study was designed to explore the protective effect of 2,3,5,4'-tetrahydroxystilbene-2-O-ß-d-glucoside (TSG) against ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury-induced cardiomyocytes apoptosis. METHODS: The H9c2 cell I/R injury model was induced by simultaneous shortage of nutrients and oxygen. TSG administration (0.10, 0.25, and 0.50 mM) was performed before and during I/R stimulation. Cell apoptosis was evaluated using terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase dUTP nick end labeling assay. Expression of cell-related proteins was detected to assess the effect of TSG on cell apoptosis. RESULTS: I/R injury induced significant cell apoptosis. Significantly decreased Bcl-2 and increased Bax, caspase-3, and p-Akt expression ( P < 0.01) was detected in the cell model of I/R injury. In contrast, TSG administration eliminated all the changes induced by I/R injury in a dose-dependent manner. Compared with the H9c2 cell model of I/R injury, the H9c2 cells treated with 0.50 mM TSG showed the lowest cell apoptosis percentage, the highest expression of Bcl-2, and the lowest expression of Bax, caspase-3, and p-Akt ( P < 0.01). CONCLUSION: We confirmed that the protective effect of TSG against I/R injury-induced cell apoptosis in H9c2 in vitro was associated with the Bcl-2/Bax ratio, caspase-3, and Akt activation.

RESUMO

Aims: The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of intimacy and dyadic coping on anxiety and depression in patients with pancreatic cancer and their spousal caregivers. Methods: This study conducted from October 2021 to June 2022, included 277 pancreatic cancer patients and their spousal caregivers. This research used actor-partner interdependence mediation model to explore the relationship of intimacy, dyadic coping, and psychological distress among pancreatic cancer patients and their spousal caregivers. Results: The results of this study showed that there were two actor effects: the satisfaction of intimate relationship between pancreatic cancer patients and their spouse caregivers had a positive predictive effect on their dyadic coping (ß = 1.787, p < 0.001) and (ß = 1.587, p < 0.001). The dyadic coping of pancreatic cancer patients and their spouse caregivers had a negative predictive effect on their own anxiety and depression (ß = -0.253, p < 0.001) and (ß = -0.293, p < 0.001). The results of this study showed that there was a partner effect: intimate relationship satisfaction of pancreatic cancer patients had a positive predictive effect on dyadic coping of their spousal caregivers (ß = 0.574, p < 0.05). Conclusion: This study demonstrates the interdependence of pancreatic cancer patients and their spousal caregivers in coping with the disease. The healthy intimate relationship and effective dyadic coping styles are essential to alleviating disease pressure and lowering the psychological burden on cancer families.

RESUMO

This work examined the potential of bioethanol production from expired cookies (EC) by the separate hydrolysis and fermentation process. EC was hydrolyzed by glucoamylase with different enzyme addition (3.5 U/g to 140 U/g) to produce the EC hydrolysate. The glucose concentration increased with enzyme addition from 3.5 U/g to 14 U/g and the highest glucose concentration of 21.2 g/L was obtained. The EC hydrolysate was used by Saccharomyces cerevisiae for bioethanol production. The optimal ethanol production obtained from this study was 40.1 g/L in term of economics and efficiency. According to the mass balance, the highest ethanol yield from EC was 0.4 g/g. Techno-economic analysis of the plant with capacity of 5 tons EC/day was also assessed in this study. The total capital cost and annual operation cost were US$540400.7 and US$144543.9/y, respectively. The revenue of the plant was US$390522/y with the sales of 660 t/y ethanol and 412.5 t/y oils. The plant should feed the EC more than 1.04 t/d (334.2 t/y) to avoid the shutdown point. This is the first study to demonstrate the bioethanol production from EC and assess the economic feasibility for industrial application.

RESUMO

Aim: We aim to develop a signature that could accurately predict prognosis and evaluate the response to immune checkpoint blockade (ICB) in bladder urothelial carcinoma (BLCA). Methods: Based on comprehensive analysis of public database, we identified prognosis-related hub genes and investigated their predictive values for the ICB response in BLCA. Results: Among 69 common DEGs, three genes (AURKA, BIRC5, and CKS1B) were associated with poor prognosis, and which were related to histological subtypes, TP53 mutation status, and the C2 (IFN-gamma dominant) subtype. Three genes and their related risk model can effectively predict the response of immunotherapy. Their related drugs were identified through analysis of drug bank database. Conclusions: Three genes could predict prognosis and evaluate the response to ICB in BLCA.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Both massage and topically administered NSAIDs are safe and effective treatments for knee osteoarthritis (KOA); however, different massage technique sects in China caused assessment difficulties for the treatment of KOA. In order to standardize the massage techniques and procedures, we organized multi-disciplinary experts in China to acquire an evidence-based traditional Chinese medicine massage treatment of knee osteoarthritis. The purposes of this study will be to provide clinicians a complementary and alternative therapy for patients and to evaluate the efficacy and safety of evidence-based traditional Chinese medicine massage treatment of KOA compared to External Diclofenac Diethylamine Emulgel. METHODS AND DESIGN: A randomized controlled trial in which 300 participants diagnosed with KOA will be recruited and randomly allocated to either the experimental group or the control group in a ratio of 2:1. Two hundred participants will receive evidence-based traditional Chinese medicine massage 2 sessions per week for 10 weeks as the experimental group, and 100 participants will receive External Diclofenac Diethylamine Emulgel 3-4 times per day for 10 weeks as the control group. The patients in the two groups will receive follow-up at two time points at 5 weeks and 10 weeks from the beginning of treatment, respectively. The MRI scans and X-ray will be performed at baseline and at the end of the intervention. The primary outcome will be the changes in the Western Ontario and McMaster Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC). Secondary outcomes will be measured by the PRO scale for knee osteoarthritis based on the concept of traditional Chinese medicine (Chinese scale for knee osteoarthritis (CSKO)), X-ray evaluation, and MRI scan evaluation. The data of WOMAC and CSKO will be analyzed at the baseline, 5 weeks, and 10 weeks from the beginning of treatment. The data from MRI scans and X-rays will be analyzed at baseline and at the end of the intervention. The significance level sets as 5%. The safety of interventions will be evaluated after each treatment session. DISCUSSION: This study will provide clinicians with much-needed knowledge for the treatment of KOA through a controlled trial. TRIAL REGISTRATION: Chinese Clinical Trial Registry ChiCTR1800014400 . RESUMO

This study aimed to utilize the enzymatic hydrolysis of leftover cooked rice (LCR) for fermentative ethanol production. Effect of glucoamylase volumes (V1: 5 U/g, V2: 25 U/g, and V3: 50 U/g) on the performance of LCR hydrolysis was also evaluated. It was found that the highest chemical oxygen demand (COD) of 77.5 g/L and reducing sugar (RS) of 34.6 g/L were achieved at V3. The LCR hydrolyzate obtained from enzymatic hydrolysis was then used as feedstock for ethanol fermentation. Higher ethanol production was obtained when RS increased from 18.7 g/L (V1) to 23.2 g/L (V2). However, lower ethanol production was found when RS further increased to 34.6 g/L (V3) probably because too high RS concentration led to the inhibition on the yeast. The maximum ethanol production and yield were 21.1 g/L and 0.3 g ethanol/g LCR, respectively. The LCR could be a promising substrate for fermentative ethanol production for industrial application.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: Patients with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) have poor prognosis and show poor responses to immune checkpoint (IC) inhibitor (ICI) therapy. Competing endogenous RNA (ceRNA) networks, tumor-infiltrating immune cells (TIICs), and ICIs may influence tumor prognosis and response rates to ICI therapy. This study is aimed at identifying prognostic and IC-related biomarkers and key TIIC signatures to improve prognosis and ICI therapy response in HNSCC patients. METHODS AND RESULTS: Ninety-five long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs), microRNAs (miRNAs), and 1746 mRNAs were identified using three independent methods. We constructed a ceRNA network and estimated the proportions of 22 immune cell subtypes. Ten ceRNAs were related to prognosis according to Kaplan-Meier analysis. Two risk signatures based, respectively, on nine ceRNAs (ANLN, CFL2, ITGA5, KDELC1, KIF23, NFIA, PTX3, RELT, and TMC7) and three immune cell types (naïve B cells, neutrophils, and regulatory T cells) via univariate Cox regression, least absolute shrinkage and selection operator, and multivariate Cox regression analyses could accurately and independently predict the prognosis of HNSCC patients. Key mRNAs in the ceRNA network were significantly correlated with naïve B cells and regulatory T cells and with stage, grade, and immune and molecular subtype. Eight IC genes exhibited higher expression in tumor tissues and were correlated with eight key mRNAs in the ceRNA network in HNSCC patients with different HPV statuses according to coexpression and TIMER 2.0 analyses. Most drugs were effective in association with expression of these key signatures (ANLN, CFL2, ITGA5, KIF23, NFIA, PTX3, RELT, and TMC7) based on GSCALite analysis. The prognostic value of key biomarkers and associations between key ceRNAs and IC genes were validated using online databases. Eight key ceRNAs were confirmed to predict response to ICI in other cancers based on TIDE analysis. CONCLUSIONS: We constructed two risk signatures to accurately predict prognosis in HNSCC. Key IC-related signatures may be associated with response to ICI therapy. Combinations of ICIs with inhibitors of eight key mRNAs may improve survival outcomes of HNSCC patients.

RESUMO

Feasibility of infrared assisted freeze drying (IRAFD) was evaluated for production of the strawberry snacks. Infrared (IR) radiation provided the driving force of ice sublimation during freeze drying (FD). Different IRAFD conditions were tested, including the continuous IRAFD-1.6 kW/m2 and IRAFD-1.6 kW/m2 at different weight reductions (20%, 40%, and 60%). Conventional FD had a total drying time of 691 ± 19 min, whereas continuous IRAFD significantly reduced the drying time to 309 ± 32 min. Continuous IRAFD also reduced the amount of consumed electrical energy by 42% compared to that of FD. A long duration of IR radiation produced a soft texture in the snacks. Drying kinetics were analyzed using various models, including the Page model, exponential model, and Henderson and Pabis model. The Page model provided the best fit to the experimental drying curve. This study showed the potential of IRAFD in producing value-added fruit snacks with good textural quality and efficient use of energy.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Stomach adenocarcinoma (STAD) is a common malignancy worldwide with poor prognosis. Therefore, it is important to identify a valuable prognostic biomarker for STAD. The aim of present study was to identify novel prognostic biomarkers for STAD and evaluate the potential role of hub genes in STAD. METHODS: Gene Expression Profiling Interactive Analysis (GEPIA) and Cancer RNA-Seq Nexus were performed to identify differentially expressed genes (DEGs). Subsequently, hub genes were selected by a Venn diagram, and the expression of key genes was confirmed by UALCAN database. Furthermore, survival analysis of these hub genes was performed using Oncolnc and Human Protein Atlas (HPA) database. Gene alteration status of hub genes was assessed by cBioPortal. Finally, we investigated the association between hub genes and immune cell infiltration in STAD through the Tumor Immune Estimation Resource (TIMER) and GEPIA database. RESULTS: Three common hub genes were obtained, including 2 downregulated DEGs (ABCA8 and FABP4) and one upregulated DEG (SLC52A3). Furthermore, increased expression of ABCA8 and FABP4 and decreased expression of SLC52A3 were correlated with poor prognosis. Meanwhile, three hub genes showed genetic alterations in various datasets of STAD. Finally, our results showed that ABCA8 and FABP4 displayed a positive correlation with immune infiltration, especially in M2 macrophages. CONCLUSIONS: The results of this study suggest that ABCA8 and FABP4 may be used as prognostic biomarkers and correlated with immune infiltration in STAD.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The sugar will eventually be exported transporter (SWEET) family is a novel type of membrane-embedded sugar transporter that contains seven transmembrane helices with two MtN3/saliva domains. The SWEET family plays crucial roles in multiple processes, including carbohydrate transportation, development, environmental adaptability and host-pathogen interactions. Although SWEET genes, especially those involved in response to biotic stresses, have been extensively characterized in many plants, they have not yet been studied in potato. OBJECTIVE: The identification of StSWEET genes provides important candidates for further functional analysis and lays the foundation for the production of good quality and high yield potatoes through molecular breeding. METHODS: In this study, StSWEET genes were identified using a genome-wide search method. A comprehensive analysis of StSWEET family through bioinformatics methods, such as phylogenetic tree, gene structure and promoter prediction analysis. The expression profiles of StSWEET genes in different potato tissues and under P. infestans attack and sugar stress were studied using quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR). RESULTS: Phylogenetic analysis classified 33 StSWEET genes into four groups containing 12, 5, 12 and 4 genes. Furthermore, the gene structures and conserved motifs found that the StSWEET genes are very conservative during evolution. The chromosomal localization pattern showed that the distribution and density of the StSWEETs on 10 potato chromosomes were uneven and basically clustered. Predictive promoter analysis indicated that StSWEET proteins are associated with cell growth, development, secondary metabolism, and response to biotic and abiotic stresses. Finally, the expression patterns of the StSWEET genes in different tissues and the induction of P. infestans and the process of the sugar stress were investigated to obtain the tissue-specific and stress-responsive candidates. CONCLUSION: This study systematically identifies the SWEET gene family in potato at the genome-wide level, providing important candidates for further functional analysis and contributing to a better understanding of the molecular basis of development and tolerance in potato.

RESUMO

Ovarian cancer (OC) is the deadliest gynecological cancer in women. Immune cell infiltration has a critical role in regulating carcinogenesis and prognosis in OC. To identify prognostic genes relevant to the tumor microenvironment in OC, we investigated the association between OC and gene expression profiles. Results obtained with the ESTIMATE R tool showed that immune score and stromal score were correlated with lymphatic invasion, and high immune score predicted a favorable prognosis. A total of 342 common differentially expressed genes were identified according to the two scores; these genes were mainly involved in immune response, extracellular region, and serine-type endopeptidase activity. Three immune-related prognostic genes were selected by univariate and multivariate Cox regression analysis. We further established a prognostic model and validated the prognostic value of three hub genes in different databases; our results showed that this model could accurately predict survival and evaluate prognosis independent of clinical characteristics. Three hub genes have prognostic value in OC. TIMER analysis revealed that the three genes were correlated with different immune cells. Low levels of macrophage infiltration and high levels of CD4+ T cell infiltration were associated with favorable survival outcomes. Arm-level gain of GYPC was correlated with neutrophils and dendritic cells. These findings indicate that CXCR4, GYPC, and MMP12 modulate prognosis via effects on the infiltration of immune cells. Thus, these genes represent potential targets for immune therapy in OC.

RESUMO

As one of the three basic theories of landscape architecture in China, landscape ecology provides a powerful tool for leading landscape architecture in the way from experience- to evidence-based. By systematically reviewing literatures, we explored the advantages and necessity of applying landscape ecology theories and methods in landscape architecture, and summarized the interdisciplinary research hotspot and progress, including research subject, scientific foundation of planning or design, and the landscape performance for improving human wellbeing. We proposed the prior topics on the combination of landscape ecology and landscape architecture to meet the needs of planning and design in practice, including studying the landscape connotation and classification system to serve the multi-disciplinary and multi-sectors, evaluating landscape performance and quantifying the planning and design parameters for the decision-making, studying the coupling system of landscape pattern and ecological processes for solving environmental problems of human settlement and to decrease uncertainties of planning and design, studying how to enhance the capacity of landscape service for human wellbeing. We proposed to promote the application of landscape ecology comprehensive researches into practice, to consolidate the scientific basis of planning and design in landscape architecture, and to construct a practice-oriented scientific research system to bridge the gap between theory and practice.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: To better understand the reason for the low success rate of posterior cricoarytenoid (PCA) muscle reinnervation, we attempted to identify the communicating branches that may exist between the nerve branch to the PCA muscle and the other laryngeal adductors in addition to the interarytenoid (IA) muscle. STUDY DESIGN: Quantitative histological assessment. METHODS: Twenty human hemilarynges from patients with laryngeal or hypopharyngeal cancer were obtained after surgery and stained with Sihler's stain, which rendered the muscle translucent while counterstaining the neuroanatomy of the recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) inside the larynges. RESULTS: The nerve supply to the PCA muscle was separated into two main branches. One upper branch supplied the horizontal compartment, and the lower branch supplied the vertical/oblique compartment. In 14 specimens, two nerve branches to the PCA muscle arose separately from the RLN. In six specimens, one single main branch arose from the RLN and immediately ramified into two secondary branches. In all specimens except one, the nerve branch to the horizontal compartment was connected to the IA muscle. However, no communicating branches were observed between the nerve to the PCA muscle and the other laryngeal adductors. No anastomosis between nerve branches to the horizontal and vertical/oblique compartments or other variations of nerve distribution were observed. CONCLUSIONS: The communicating branches between the nerve branches to the PCA muscle and the IA muscle may be the only branch, complicating the reinnervation procedure. More investigations are needed to identify variations in the terminal branch distribution from the RLN. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: NA.

RESUMO

To explore the border effect and physiological characteristic of broomcorn millet growing under different film mulching on ridge-furrow for harvesting rainwater models in the semi-arid region of Northern Shaanxi, China, a three-year field experiment was conducted with four different widths of ridge and furrow, and the bare land flat sowing as the control (NM). The width of ridge and furrow varied as ridge: furrow = 40 cm: 40 cm (P40), 60 cm: 60 cm (P60), 80 cm: 80 cm (P80), and 100 cm:100 cm (P100). The results showed that the wider the width of furrow and ridge was, the stronger the border advantage and the border effect index of the yield were. With the increase in width of furrow and ridge, the yield increasing effect of side rows increased with the maximum of 207.7%, and the yield increasing effect of middle rows decreased with the minimum of 10.3%. P60 reached the highest yield within three years. The yield contribution rate of side rows was higher than that of middle rows (P < 0.05). The chlorophyll contents, Ch1 a/Ch1 b, and photosynthetic rate of side rows were higher than those of middle rows among the different harvesting rainwater models. The wider the width of furrow and ridge was, the stronger the photosynthetic capacity of side rows was, and the weaker the photosynthetic capacity of middle rows was. The optimal type of ridge and furrow was P60 in the semi-arid region of Northern Shaanxi.

RESUMO

The objective of this study was to explore the effects of mulching patterns on soil water, growth, photosynthetic characteristics, grain yield and water use efficiency (WUE) of broomcorn millet in the dryland of Loess Plateau in China. In a three-year field experiment from 2011 to 2013, we compared four different mulching patterns with traditional plat planting (no mulching) as the control (CK). The mulching patterns included W ridge covered with common plastic film + intredune covered with straw (SG), common ridge covered with common plastic film + intredune covered with straw (LM), double ridges covered with common plastic film + intredune covered with straw (QM), and the traditional plat planting covered with straw (JG). The results showed that the soil water storage in 0-100 cm layer was significantly higher in all mulching patterns than in CK, particularly in SG then followed by LM, QM and JG, and the differences among the mulching patterns reached a significant level at the different growth stages of broomcorn millet. Among all mulching patterns, SG had the greatest effect on the growth and photosynthesis of broomcorn millet, respectively increasing the yield and WUE by 55.9% and 64.9% over CK, and the differences among the mulching patterns also reached a significant level. Therefore, SG was recommended as an efficient planting pattern for broomcorn millet production in the dryland of Loess Plateau in China.
