RESUMO

Particulate organic carbon (POC) and its variability were studied to assess the accuracy of ocean colour retrieval algorithms over the eastern Arabian Sea (EAS) as it controls the carbon sequestration, oxygen minimum zone and biogeochemical (C, N and P) cycles. The seasonality in the physical and biological processes strongly influenced the distribution of POC along the EAS. Higher POC and chlorophyll a (chl a) during the spring inter monsoon (SIM) in the north EAS were due to detrainment bloom. The lower POC:chl a ratios during the winter monsoon (WM) (299.8 ± 190.8) than the SIM (482.1 ± 438.3) were due to the influence of freshly derived organic matter with high nutrient levels. The moderate coefficient of regression values of POC with chl a (R2 = 0.49, N = 59) suggests the importance of dead organic materials in controlling the POC distribution in the EAS. Validation between satellite and in situ POC using the four ocean colour retrieval algorithms showed that the algorithm based on the ratio of remote sensing reflectance (Rrs) performed better (R2 = 0.6, N = 17). It also showed a linear trend of POC with absorption coefficients suggesting it as an optical proxy for the POC retrieval.

RESUMO

Iron ore was mined from the banded iron formations of Goa, India, and transported through the Mandovi and Zuari estuaries for six decades until the ban on mining from September 2012. Here we focus on the environmental magnetic properties of sediments from the catchment area, upstream and downstream of these estuaries, and adjacent shelf during peak mining time. Magnetic susceptibility (χ lf) and saturation isothermal remanent magnetization (SIRM) values of sediments were highest in upstream (catchment area and estuaries), decreased gradually towards downstream (catchment area and estuaries), and were lowest on the adjacent shelf. The χ lf values of the Mandovi estuary were two to fourfold higher than those in the Zuari. The sediments of these two estuaries after the mining ban showed enrichment of older magnetite and sharp decrease in the SIRM values. Although the input of ore material has been reduced after mining ban, more flushing of estuarine sediments is required for healthier environment.

RESUMO

Direct measurements of dissolved N2O concentrations, fluxes and saturation percentages undertaken for the first time in two coastal lagoons - Al-Shabab and Al-Arbaeen, along the east coast of the Red Sea, revealed the region as a significant source of N2O to the atmosphere. The exacerbated dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) from various anthropogenic sources led to substantial oxygen depletion in both the lagoons, which turned to bottom anoxia at Al-Arbaeen lagoon during the spring season. We assume that the accumulation of N2O is caused by nitrifier-denitrification in the hypoxic/anoxic boundaries. In fact, the results indicated that oxygen-depleted bottom waters favoured denitrification when the oxygenated surface waters recorded nitrification signals. Overall, the N2O concentration ranged from 109.4 to 788.6 nM (40.6-325.6 nM) in spring and 58.7 to 209.8 nM (35.8-89.9 nM) in winter in the Al-Arbaeen (Al-Shabab) lagoon. The N2O flux ranged from 647.1 to 1763.2 µmol m-2 day-1 (85.9 to 160.2 µmol m-2 day-1) and 112.5 to 150.8 µmol m-2 day-1 (76.1 to 88.7 µmol m-2 day-1) in the spring and winter respectively, in the Al-Arbaeen (Al-Shabab) lagoons. The ongoing developmental activities may worsen the current situation of hypoxia and associated biogeochemical feedbacks; therefore, the present results underline the need for continuous monitoring of both lagoons to restrict more severe oxygen depletion in future.

RESUMO

The objective of this study was to understand the influence of anthropogenic organic matter on the spatial distribution microbial community in the continental shelf sediments of the Southeastern Arabian Sea (SEAS). The sediment samples were taken from the inner shelf (30 m depths) and outer shelf (100-200 m). The C:Nmolar ratio of the sediment displayed a significant variation between the inner and outer shelf and a higher terrestrial organic input in the inner shelf. Microbial community composition also showed a significant variation between the inner and outer shelf (p ≤ 0.05). Proteobacteria was the dominant phylum in the outer shelf sediments (42.5%), whereas Desulfobacterota (21.9%) was the dominant phylum in the inner shelf. Complex terrestrial organic matter degrading bacteria dominated the inner shelf, whereas oligophilic microbial community and autochthonous organic matter utilizing bacteria dominated the outer shelf. Thus the source of organic matter controlled the microbial distribution in the SEAS.

RESUMO

A comprehensive analysis on the phytoplankton ecology with special reference to different phytoplankton size classes was carried out at green Noctiluca scintillans (hereafter Noctiluca) bloom and non-bloom locations in offshore waters of the northern Arabian Sea. At the bloom locations, green Noctiluca represented a dense mono-specific proliferation with average cell density of 10.16 ±â€¯5.806 × 104 cells-L-1 and relative abundance share of 98.63%. Active photosynthesis through prasinophytic endosymbiont was depicted from net community production magnitude reaching 85.26 mgC/m3/Day under low prey abundance. Parallel swarming of Porpita porpita, a voracious copepod feeder signified the competitive advantage of Noctiluca to have the phytoplankton prey. Average concentration of picophytoplankton biomass was eleven times lower in surface waters of non-bloom stations in comparison to bloom. Higher N:P ratio in subsurface waters of non-bloom stations signified non-utilization of nitrogenous nutrients. Green Noctiluca bloom onset subsequent to diatom rich conditions was evident from spatio-temporal ocean colour satellite imageries.
