RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Using conventional computed tomography (CT), the accurate diagnosis of lymph node (LN) metastasis of esophageal cancer is difficult. PURPOSE: To examine dual-energy CT parameters to predict LN metastasis preoperatively in patients with esophageal cancer. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Twenty-six consecutive patients who underwent dual-energy CT before an esophageal cancer surgery (19 patients with LN metastases) were analyzed. The included LNs had a short-axis diameter of ≥4 mm and were confirmed to be resected on postoperative CT. Their short-axis diameter, CT value, iodine concentration (IC), and fat fraction were measured on early- and late-phase contrast-enhanced dual-energy CT images and compared between pathologically confirmed metastatic and non-metastatic LNs. RESULTS: In total, 51 LNs (34 metastatic and 17 non-metastatic) were included. In the early phase, IC and fat fraction were significantly lower in the metastatic than in the non-metastatic LNs (IC = 1.6 mg/mL vs. 2.2 mg/mL; fat fraction = 20.3% vs. 32.5%; both P < 0.05). Furthermore, in the late phase, IC and fat fraction were significantly lower in the metastatic than in the non-metastatic LNs (IC = 2.0 mg/mL vs. 3.0 mg/mL; fat fraction = 20.4% vs. 33.0%; both P < 0.05). Fat fraction exhibited accuracies of 82.4% and 78.4% on early- and late-phase images, respectively. Conversely, short-axis diameter and CT value on both early- and late-phase images were not significantly different between the metastatic and non-metastatic LNs (P > 0.05). CONCLUSION: Using dual-energy CT images, IC and fat fraction are useful for diagnosing LN metastasis in patients with esophageal cancer.

RESUMO

Ice nucleators are of crucial and important implications in various fields including chemistry, climate, agriculture, and cryobiology. However, the complicated extract and biocompatibility of ice nucleators remain unresolved, and the mechanism of ice nucleation remains largely unknown. Herein, we show that natural nanocrystalline cellulose materials possess special properties to enhance ice nucleation and facilitate needle-like ice crystal growth. We reveal the molecular level mechanism that the efficient exposure of cellulose hydroxyl groups on (-110) surface leads to faster nucleation of water. We further design chitosan-decorated cellulose nanocrystals to accomplish molecular cryoablation in CD 44 high-expression cells; the cell viability shows more than ∼10 times decrease compared to cryoablation alone and does not show evident systematic toxicity. Collectively, our findings also offer improved knowledge in molecular level ice nucleation, which may benefit multiple research communities and disciplines.

RESUMO

Although peroxiredoxin 2 (PRDX2) plays a vital role in relieving oxidative stress, its physiological function in cartilage development remains almost unknown. In this study, we found that the expression of PRDX2 significantly increased in the chondrocytes compared with pre-chondrocytes. PRDX2 knockdown significantly decreased the expression of extracellular matrix (ECM) protein (Col2a and Aggrecan), which led to blocked cartilage formation. Moreover, PRDX2 knockdown also inhibited the expression of connective tissue growth factor (CTGF). CTGF is an important growth factor that regulates synthesis of ECM proteins. We explored the possible regulatory mechanism by which PRDX2 regulated the expression of CTGF. Our results demonstrated that PRDX2 knockdown downregulated the expression of CTGF by inhibiting Wnt5a/Yes-associated protein 1 (YAP1) pathway. In addition, PRDX2 knockdown promoted the expression of interleukin 6 (IL-6), indicating PRDX2 expression had an anti-inflammatory function during antler growth. Mechanistically, PRDX2 knockdown promoted cartilage matrix degradation by activating the IL-6-mediated Janus Kinase 2/Signal Transducer and Activator of Transcription 3 (JAK2/STAT3) signaling pathway. These results reveal that PRDX2 is a potential regulator that promotes cartilage extracellular matrix synthesis.

RESUMO

The sika deer is one type of seasonal breeding animal, and the growth of its antler is affected by light signals. Melatonin (MLT) is a neuroendocrine hormone synthesized by the pineal gland and plays an important role in controlling the circadian rhythm. Although the MLT/MT1 (melatonin 1A receptor) signal has been identified during antler development, its physiological function remains almost unknown. The role of MLT on antler growth in vivo and in vitro is discussed in this paper. In vivo, MLT implantation was found to significantly increase the weight of antlers. The relative growth rate of antlers showed a remarkable increased trend as well. In vitro, the experiment showed MLT accelerated antler mesenchymal cell differentiation. Further, results revealed that MLT regulated the expression of Collage type II (Col2a) through the MT1 binding mediated transcription of Yes-associated protein 1 (YAP1) in antler mesenchymal cells. In addition, treatment with vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) promoted chondrocytes degeneration by downregulating the expression of Col2a and Sox9 (SRY-Box Transcription Factor 9). MLT effectively inhibited VEGF-induced degeneration of antler chondrocytes by inhibiting the Signal transducers and activators of transcription 5/Interleukin-6 (STAT5/IL-6) pathway and activating the AKT/CREB (Cyclin AMP response-element binding protein) pathway dependent on Sox9 expression. Together, our results indicate that MLT plays a vital role in the development of antler cartilage.

RESUMO

Antler growth depends on the proliferation and differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), and this process may be adversely affected by oxidative stress. Melatonin (MLT) has antioxidant functions, but its role in Cervidae remains largely unknown. In this article, flow cytometry, reactive oxygen species (ROS) identification, qPCR, and other methods were used to investigate the protective mechanism of MLT in H2O2-induced oxidative stress of antler MSCs. The results showed that MLT significantly increases cell viability by relieving the oxidative stress of antler MSCs. MLT inhibits cell apoptosis by protecting mitochondrial function. We blocked the melatonin receptor with luzindole (Luz) and found that the receptor blockade significantly increases H2O2-induced hyperoxide levels and causes significant inhibition of mitochondrial function. MLT treatment activates the nuclear factor E2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) antioxidant signaling pathway, up-regulates the expression of NAD(P)H quinone oxidoreductase 1 (NQO1) and other genes and it could inhibit apoptosis. In contrast, the melatonin receptor blockade down-regulates the expression of Nrf2 pathway-related genes, but significantly up-regulates the expression of apoptotic genes. It was indicated that MLT activates the Nrf2 pathway through the melatonin receptor and alleviates H2O2-induced oxidative stress and apoptosis in antler MSCs. This study provides a theoretical basis for further studying the oxidative stress and antioxidant process of antler MSCs and, thereby, increasing antler yields.

RESUMO

The excellent stretchability and biocompatibility of flexible sensors have inspired an emerging field of plant wearables, which enable intimate contact with the plants to continuously monitor the growth status and localized microclimate in real-time. Plant flexible wearables provide a promising platform for the development of plant phenotype and the construction of intelligent agriculture via monitoring and regulating the critical physiological parameters and microclimate of plants. Here, the emerging applications of plant flexible wearables together with their pros and cons from four aspects, including physiological indicators, surrounding environment, crop quality, and active control of growth, are highlighted. Self-powered energy supply systems and signal transmission mechanisms are also elucidated. Furthermore, the future opportunities and challenges of plant wearables are discussed in detail.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: This study aimed to investigate the effect of intravitreal conbercept (IVC) injections on the aqueous humor concentrations of angiogenic and inflammatory cytokines in patients with macular edema (ME) due to central retinal vein occlusion and to determine whether changes in cytokine levels after IVC are associated with the development of rebound ME. METHODS: Forty-nine patients with ME caused by central retinal vein occlusion were included in this retrospective study. Monthly doses of IVC were administered for three months, followed by a Pro Re Nata dosing regimen. Rebound ME was defined as ≥110% increase in the foveal thickness compared with the baseline. Whenever injections were administered, aqueous humor samples were obtained. Multiplex bead assay was used to measure seven angiogenic and inflammatory cytokines in aqueous humor samples. RESULTS: At baseline, patients with central retinal vein occlusion showed significantly higher aqueous humor concentrations of vascular endothelial growth factor, placental growth factor, monocyte chemoattractant protein-1, platelet-derived growth factor-AA, IL-6, IL-8, and IL-12. At 1-month and 2-month follow-up after IVC, significantly decreased concentrations of all cytokines were observed. During the 12-month follow-up period, 6 of the 49 eyes (12.2%) showed rebound ME after IVC. Patients with rebound ME showed significantly elevated levels of inflammatory but not angiogenic cytokines. CONCLUSION: Angiogenic and inflammatory cytokines were overexpressed in patients with ME caused by central retinal vein occlusion. Conbercept treatment influenced the concentrations of various inflammatory cytokines and reduced aqueous vascular endothelial growth factor and placental growth factor concentrations. Rebound ME may occur due to disruption of the balance between angiogenic and inflammatory cytokines and an accompanying excess of inflammatory cytokines but not angiogenic cytokines, after antivascular endothelial growth factor therapy.

RESUMO

Endometritis is the inflammatory response of the endometrial lining of the uterus and is associated with low conception rates, early embryonic mortality, and prolonged inter-calving intervals, and thus poses huge economic losses to the dairy industry worldwide. Ginsenoside Rb1 (GnRb1) is a natural compound obtained from the roots of Panax ginseng, having several pharmacological and biological properties. However, the anti-inflammatory properties of GnRb1 in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-challenged endometritis through the TLR4-mediated NF-κB signaling pathway has not yet been researched. This study was planned to evaluate the mechanisms of how GnRb1 rescues LPS-induced endometritis. In the present research, histopathological findings revealed that GnRb1 ameliorated LPS-triggered uterine injury. The ELISA and RT-qPCR assay findings indicated that GnRb1 suppressed the expression level of pro-inflammatory molecules (TNF-α, IL-1ß and IL-6) and boosted the level of anti-inflammatory (IL-10) cytokine. Furthermore, the molecular study suggested that GnRb1 attenuated TLR4-mediated NF-κB signaling. The results demonstrated the therapeutic efficacy of GnRb1 in the mouse model of LPS-triggered endometritis via the inhibition of the TLR4-associated NF-κB pathway. Taken together, this study provides a baseline for the protective effect of GnRb1 to treat endometritis in both humans and animals.

RESUMO

Improved endovascular embolization can contribute to assistant treatment for patients. However, many traditional embolic materials, such as metal microcoils or liquid embolic agents, are associated with limitations of coil migration or recanalization. Herein, as the first trial, an injectable and radiopaque liquid metal/calcium alginate (LM/CA) hydrogel is introduced and fabricated as a candidate for endovascular embolization and tumor embolotherapy through developing LM droplets as radiopaque units into biocompatible calcium alginate cross-linked network. The adoption of LM droplets makes hydrogels radiopaque under X-ray and CT scan, which significantly facilitates the tracking of material location during surgical vascular operation. In addition, in vitro and in vivo experiments prove that such smart hydrogel could convert from liquid to solid rapidly via cross-linking, showing pretty flexible and controllable functions. Benefiting from these properties, the hydrogel can be performed in blood vessels through injection via syringes and then served as an embolic material for endovascular embolization procedures. In vivo experiments demonstrate that such hydrogels can occlude arteries and block blood flow until they ultimately lead to ischemic necrosis of tumors and partial healthy tissues. Overall, the present LM/CA hydrogels are promising to be developed as new generation embolic materials for future tumor embolotherapy.

RESUMO

AIMS: The efficacy of somatostatin in altering splanchnic hemodynamics in cirrhotic portal hypertension is still controversial. We aimed to establish the dynamic effect of somatostatin on portal pressure in cirrhotic patients and compared its effect with Partial Splenic Embolization (PSE). METHODS: Eighteen patients with cirrhotic portal hypertension were prospectively recruited. The wedged hepatic venous pressure (WHVP) and free hepatic venous pressure (FHVP) were repeatedly measured at baseline, 1-, 5-, 10- and 20-min after initiating somatostatin infusion. After somatostatin infusion cessation and washout, WHVP and FHVP were measured before and after PSE. The change in all the variables between time points was analyzed. RESULTS: Decreased hepatic venous pressure gradient (HVPG) 5-min after initiation of infusion was identified compared with baseline level (19.6%; p-value: .042), which was achieved through elevated FHVP (37.5%; p-value: 9.26e - 04). There was no significant decrease in WHVP at any time point during somatostatin infusion. The HVPG (17.4%; p-value: 1.27e - 04) and WHVP (10.4%; p-value: 3.00e - 03) post-PSE significantly decreased compared to the washout level. No significant distribution differences in the number of patients with HVPG decrease by a percentage relative to the baseline level were identified between the 5-min time point and post-PSE. CONCLUSION: Our study indicates that somatostatin administration does not decrease WHVP within 20 min at clinically recommended doses. While somatostatin did decrease HVPG, this effect was achieved through increased FHVP, providing a possible explanation for its unclear efficacy. In contrast, PSE decreases both the WHVP and the HVPG.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Doyne honeycomb retinal dystrophy (DHRD)/malattia leventinese (ML) is a rare allelic condition with massive drusen in the posterior fundus caused by EFEMP1 gene mutation. Patients showed decreased vision when the lesion affected the macular area. At present, the treatment efficiency is not satisfactory. CASE PRESENTATION: In this study, we presented a family with DHRD/ML disease and analyzed the pathological and genetic information. A 28-year-old female patient presented to our department due to impaired visual acuity for 10 years especially in the right eye with deterioration for 5 months. Gene sequencing was performed by MyGenostics (Peking, China). Gene sequencing results revealed heterozygous mutations in EFEMP1 gene, which were consistent with the DHRD/ ML. Single heterozygous mutation (c.1033C > T) was observed in each of the three blood samples. This missense mutation triggered p.R345W. CONCLUSIONS: DHRD/ML is a rare disease associated with EFEMP1 gene mutation. Up to now, we are not sure whether these lesions are associated with the onset of DHRD/ML. In future, we hope to find out the exact relationship between them.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Radio-frequency ablation has been an important physical method for tumor hyperthermia therapy. The conventional rigid electrode boards are often uncomfortable and inconvenient for performing surgery on irregular tumors, especially for those tumors near the joints, such as ankles, knee-joints or other facets like finger joints. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We proposed and demonstrated a highly conformable tumor ablation strategy through introducing liquid metal bath as conformable soft electrodes. Different heights of liquid metal bath electrodes were adopted to perform radio-frequency ablation on targeted tissues. Temperature and ablation area were measured to compare the ablation effect with plate metal electrodes. RESULTS: The recorded temperature around the ablation electrode was almost twice as high as that with the plate electrode and the effective ablated area was 2-3 fold larger in all the mimicking situations of bone tumors, span-shaped or round-shaped tumors. Another unique feature of the liquid metal electrode therapy is that the incidence of heat injury was reduced, which is a severe accident that can occur during the treatment of irregular tumors with plate metal boards. CONCLUSIONS: The present method suggests a new way of using soft liquid metal bath electrodes for targeted minimally invasive tumor ablation in future clinical practice.

RESUMO

Melatonin (MLT) plays an important role in regulating the physiological cycle of seasonal breeding animals. Melatonin receptor I (MT1) is effectively expressed in the cambium layer of deer antler. However, the function and metabolic mechanism of MLT/MT1 signaling in the mesenchymal cells of sika deer remain to be further elucidated. In this work, we detected the effects of MLT/MT1 signaling on mesenchymal cells proliferation and the interaction between MLT/MT1 and IGF1/IGF1-R signaling. The results show that (1) deer antler mesenchymal cells actually express MT1; (2) exogenous melatonin significantly promotes mesenchymal cells proliferation, while MT1 knock-down significantly impairs the positive effects of melatonin; and (3) melatonin significantly enhanced IGF1/IGF1-R signaling, as both the expression of IGF1 and IGF-1R increased, while MT1 knock-down significantly decreased IGF1-R expression and IGF1 synthesis. In summary, these data verified that MLT/MT1 signaling plays a crucial role in antler mesenchymal proliferation, which may be mediated by IGF1/IGF1-R.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to explore the application potential of 3D visualization technology based in emergency hypertensive cerebral hemorrhage surgery in primary hospitals. The specific goal is to use 3DSlicer software to perform 3D reconstruction and body surface projection on patients with hypertensive cerebral hemorrhage, provide accurate hematoma location information, help surgeons determine the specific location of hematoma on the body surface, and reduce the expansion of surgical incisions. METHODS: 3D reconstruction technology based on 3DSlicer software was employed to process CT images of patients with cerebral hemorrhage. By segmenting and reconstructing the images, a 3D model of the hematoma was generated and projected onto the patient's body surface. Utilizing the functionalities of 3DSlicer software in conjunction with the surgeon's anatomical knowledge, accurate hematoma positioning on the body surface was achieved. RESULTS: 23 patients were enrolled in this study, and underwent successful surgical evacuation. The implementation of 3D visualization technology using 3DSlicer software is expected to provide precise hematoma localization information for emergency hypertensive intracerebral hemorrhage surgery in primary hospitals. This approach will enable surgeons to accurately determine the appropriate surgical incision, thereby minimizing unnecessary trauma and improving the overall success rate of surgery. CONCLUSION: This study demonstrates the potential application of 3D visualization technology based on 3DSlicer software in emergency hypertensive cerebral hemorrhage surgery within primary hospitals. By utilizing 3DSlicer software for hematoma localization, accurate information support can be provided to assist surgeons in managing patients with hypertensive cerebral hemorrhage.

RESUMO

Endorheic basins are important geomorphological and ecological units on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (QTP), which is undergoing a rapid evolution of its lake system structure and drainage reorganization that is threatening local ecology, infrastructures and residuals owing to climate change. This dataset provides a detailed delineation and classification of endorheic basins on the QTP for understanding the complex dynamics under climate changes. A newly-developed algorithm, namely the Joint Elevation-Area Threshold (JEAT) algorithm (Liu et al, 2024), is applied for delineating endorheic basins based on digital elevation model (DEM). A total of 184 endorheic basins were divided, of which the permanent divide lines were characterized. All the endorheic basins were further categorized into five groups based on the hydraulic connectivity attributes, which have been commonly observed since 2000. The dataset also includes basic information such as drainage area, water surface area, and water storage volume of each endorheic basin. It is particularly beneficial for digital watershed analysis towards ecological restoration and water resource management on the environmentally vulnerable QTP.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To investigate the detectability of lymph node metastasis in patients with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma using a combination of dual-energy computed tomography (CT) and positron-emission tomography (PET) parameters. METHODS: We analyzed dual-energy CT and PET preoperative data in 27 consecutive patients with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (23 men, 4 women; mean age, 73.7 years). We selected lymph nodes with a short-axis diameter of ≥5 mm and measured CT values, iodine concentrations, fat fractions, long- and short-axis diameters, and ratio of long- and short-axis diameters. We performed visual assessment of lymph node characteristics based on dual-energy CT and determined the maximum standardized uptake value via PET. The measured values were postoperatively compared between pathologically confirmed metastatic and nonmetastatic lymph nodes. Stepwise logistic regression analysis was performed to determine factors associated with lymph node metastasis. Diagnostic accuracy was assessed via receiver operating characteristic curve analysis. RESULTS: Overall, 18 metastatic and 37 nonmetastatic lymph nodes were detected. CT values, iodine concentrations, fat fractions, and the maximum standardized uptake values differed significantly between metastatic and nonmetastatic lymph nodes (p < 0.05). Stepwise logistic regression showed that iodine concentration and the maximum standardized uptake value were significant predictors of metastatic lymph nodes. The areas under the curve of iodine concentrations and maximum standardized uptake values were 0.809 and 0.833, respectively. The area under the curve of the combined parameters was 0.884, with 83.3% sensitivity and 86.5% specificity. CONCLUSION: Combined dual-energy CT and PET parameters improved the diagnosis of lymph node metastasis in patients with esophageal cancer.

RESUMO

This study aims to identify candidate genes related to ovarian development after ovarian tissue transplantation through transcriptome sequencing (RNA-seq) and expression network analyses, as well as to provide a reference for determining the molecular mechanism of improving ovarian development following ovarian tissue transplantation. We collected ovarian tissues from 15 thirty-day-old ducks and split each ovary into 4 equal portions of comparable sizes before orthotopically transplanting them into 2-day-old ducks. Samples were collected on days 0 (untransplanted), 3, 6, and 9. The samples were paraffin sectioned and then subjected to Hematoxylin-Eosin (HE) staining and follicular counting. We extracted RNA from ovarian samples via the Trizol method to construct a transcriptome library, which was then sequenced by the Illumina Novaseq 6000 sequencing platform. The sequencing results were examined for differentially expressed genes (DEG) through gene ontology (GO) function and the Kyoto encyclopedia of genes and genomes (KEGG) pathway analyses, gene set enrichment analysis (GSEA), weighted correlation network analysis (WGCNA), and protein-protein interaction (PPI) networks. Some of the candidate genes were selected for verification using real-time fluorescence quantitative PCR (qRT-PCR). Histological analysis revealed a significant reduction in the number of morphologically normal follicles at 3, 6, and 9 d after ovarian transplantation, along with significantly higher abnormality rates (P < 0.05). The transcriptome analysis results revealed 2,114, 2,224, and 2,257 upregulated DEGs and 2,647, 2,883, and 2,665 downregulated DEGs at 3, 6, and 9 d after ovarian transplantation, respectively. Enrichment analysis revealed the involvement multiple pathways in inflammatory signaling, signal transduction, and cellular processes. Furthermore, WGCNA yielded 13 modules, with 10, 4, and 6 candidate genes mined at 3, 6 and 9 d after ovarian transplantation, respectively. Transcription factor (TF) prediction showed that STAT1 was the most important TF. Finally, the qRT-PCR verification results revealed that 12 candidate genes exhibited an expression trend consistent with sequencing data. In summary, significant differences were observed in the number of follicles in duck ovaries following ovarian transplantation. Candidate genes involved in ovarian vascular remodeling and proliferation were screened using RNA-Seq and WGCNA.

RESUMO

Group B Streptococcus (GBS) is a life-threatening opportunistic pathogen, particularly in pregnant women, infants, and the elderly. Currently, maternal vaccination is considered the most viable long-term option for preventing GBS mother-to-infant infection, and two polysaccharide conjugate vaccines utilizing CRM197 as a carrier protein have undergone clinical phase II trials. Surface immunogenic protein (Sip), present in all identified serotypes of GBS strains so far, is a protective surface protein of GBS. In this study, the type Ia capsular polysaccharide (CPS) of GBS was utilized as a model to develop candidate antigens for a polysaccharide conjugate vaccine by coupling it with the Sip of GBS and the traditional carrier protein CRM197. Serum analysis from immunized New Zealand rabbits and CD1 mice revealed that there was no significant difference in antibody titers between the Ia-Sip group and Ia-CRM197 group; however, both were significantly higher than those observed in the Ia polysaccharide group. Opsonophagocytosis and passive immune protection results using rabbit serum indicated no significant difference between the Ia-Sip and Ia-CRM197 groups, both outperforming the Ia polysaccharide group. Furthermore, serum from the Ia-Sip group had a cross-protective effect on multiple types of GBS strains. The challenge test results in CD1 mice demonstrated that the Ia-Sip group provided complete protection against lethal doses of bacteria and also showed cross-protection against type III strain. Our study demonstrates for the first time that Ia-Sip is immunogenic and provides serotype-independent protection in glycan conjugate vaccines, which also indicates Sip may serve as an excellent carrier protein for GBS glycan conjugate vaccines and provide cross-protection against multiple GBS strains.

RESUMO

Total leaf area per plant is an important measure of the photosynthetic capacity of an individual plant that together with plant density drives the canopy leaf area index, that is, the total leaf area per unit ground area. Because the total number of leaves per plant (or per shoot) varies among conspecifics and among mixed species communities, this variation can affect the total leaf area per plant and per canopy but has been little studied. Previous studies have shown a strong linear relationship between the total leaf area per plant (or per shoot) (A T) and the total number of leaves per plant (or per shoot) (N T) on a log-log scale for several growth forms. However, little is known whether such a scaling relationship also holds true for bamboos, which are a group of Poaceae plants with great ecological and economic importance in tropical, subtropical, and warm temperate regions. To test whether the scaling relationship holds true in bamboos, two dwarf bamboo species (Shibataea chinensis Nakai and Sasaella kongosanensis 'Aureostriatus') with a limited but large number of leaves per culm were examined. For the two species, the leaves from 480 and 500 culms, respectively, were sampled and A T was calculated by summing the areas of individual leaves per culm. Linear regression and correlation analyses reconfirmed that there was a significant log-log linear relationship between A T and N T for each species. For S. chinensis, the exponent of the A T versus N T scaling relationship was greater than unity, whereas that of S. kongosanensis 'Aureostriatus' was smaller than unity. The coefficient of variation in individual leaf area increased with increasing N T for each species. The data reconfirm that there is a strong positive power-law relationship between A T and N T for each of the two species, which may reflect adaptations of plants in response to intra- and inter-specific competition for light.

RESUMO

Recently, room-temperature liquid metals have attracted increasing attention from researchers owing to their excellent material properties. Systematic interpretation of the potential toxicity issues involved is essential for a wide range of applications, especially in the biomedical and healthcare fields. However, even with the exponential growth of related studies, investigation of the toxicological impact and possible hazards of liquid metals to organisms is still in its infancy. This review aims to provide a comprehensive summary of the current frontier of knowledge on liquid metal toxicology and biocompatibility in different environments. Based on recent studies, this review focuses on Ga and Bi-based in different states. It is necessary to evaluate their toxicity considering the rapid increase in research and utilization of such liquid metal composites. Finally, existing challenges are discussed and suggestions are provided for further investigation of liquid metal toxicology to clarify the toxicological mechanisms and strategies are provided to avoid adverse effects. In addition to resolving the doubts of public concern about the toxicity of liquid metals, this review is expected to promote the healthy and sustainable development of liquid metal-based materials and their use in diverse areas, especially those related to health care.
