RESUMO
Tumors of pleomorhic adenoma parapharingeal space of the parotid gland amount for less than 20% of all salivary gland tumors. In most cases these tumors are benign, and pleomorphic (polymorphous) adenomas prevail among them (up to 80-90%). The frequency of their malignization varies from 3.6 to 30%. Pleomorphic adenoma of parapharingeal space of the parotid gland was removed from patient S., aged 23 years, in head and neck department of RROI. Tumors of superficial part of the parotid gland were removed from the patient 5 times during the last 10 years maintaining the integrity of the facial nerve. Each time the tumor was pleomorphic adenoma morphologically. After physical and x-ray (CT, MRI, MRI with angiography of neck vessels) examinations a tumor -- pleomorphic adenoma -- was removed with submandibular method. The control MRI check showed continued growth. Radiation therapy was prescribed, after which the pronounced therapeutic effect was noted. The patient has been observed for 8 months without recurrence.

In the department of head and neck tumors of Rostov Research Oncological Institute the operation on advanced mouth floor and tongue cancer is proposed comprising removement of the regional lymph nodes and resection of the tongue and mouth floor. 30 patients were operated by the suggested technique with restoration of the functions of swallowing, nutrition and speech in postoperative period in all cases. 3-year recurrence-free survival made up 28.4+/-8.2%.

The proposed reconstructive operation in patients with locally advanced laryngeal cancer. The operation implies removal of the tumor-affected half of the larynx with reconstruction of the lost structures. The resected upper corniculum of the thyroid cartilage is preserved and sutured to the stump of the cricoid cartilage seal. The lateral laryngeal wall is created from cervical skin. The proposed technique was used in surgery of 30 patients. They recovered swallowing, respiratory and speech functions.

3 cases of extracutaneous melanoma are described: those of the alveolar process of maxilla, nose septum and ethmoidal cavity. Clinical symptoms were nose haemorrhages, difficulties of the nose respiration, pains in the month. Histologically melanomas were of a typical structure being formed of the epithelioid and naevus-like cells with high content of melanine with an extra- and intracellular location.

The bioelectrical activity of the cerebral cortex, cardiovascular system status, cell-mediated immunity and peripheral blood parameters were studied in 208 cases of head and neck cancer who received local pneumo- and ultra-high frequency hyperthermia in combination with chemoradiation treatment. Local hyperthermia was found to produce no untoward side-effects.

Nine patients with cancer of the parotid glands were operated on. Parotidectomies involved resection of the facial nerve. In 3 patients neuroplasty was simultaneously carried out: the nerve was epineurally sutured end-to-end. Facial nerve function recovered in these patients.

The authors presented an analysis of immediate and short-term results of therapy of 115 patients on thermoradio- and chemotherapy for recurrent head and neck tumors. Triple irradiation at single focal doses of 10 Gy at one-week intervals between fractions were employed taking into account radioresistance of recurrent tumors. After each session of irradiation the patients received polychemotherapy (cyclophosphamide, vinblastine, methotrexate) for 2 days. Local MWF-hyperthermia was provided before a session of irradiation and during drug administration. Complete or partial tumor regression was noted in 94% of the patients with the resultant improvement in their general status. The 3-year disease-free interval was noted in 41% of the patients. Radiation changes were restricted to atrophy of the skin and mucous membranes and stable disorders of salivation.
