RESUMO

This 78-week (18-month) study conducted in 479 postmenopausal women with osteoporosis evaluated the efficacy, pharmacodynamics, pharmacokinetics, safety, and immunogenicity of candidate biosimilar CT-P41 relative to US reference denosumab. CT-P41 had equivalent efficacy and pharmacodynamics to US-denosumab, with similar pharmacokinetics and comparable safety and immunogenicity profiles. PURPOSE: To demonstrate equivalence of candidate biosimilar CT-P41 and US reference denosumab (US-denosumab) in postmenopausal women with osteoporosis. METHODS: This 78-week (18-month), double-blind, randomized, active-controlled Phase 3 study (NCT04757376) comprised two treatment periods (TPs). In TPI, patients (N = 479) were randomized 1:1 to 60 mg subcutaneous CT-P41 or US-denosumab. At Week 52, those who had received CT-P41 in TPI continued to do so. Those who had received US-denosumab were randomized (1:1) to continue treatment or switch to CT-P41 in TPII. The primary efficacy endpoint was percent change from baseline in lumbar spine bone mineral density at Week 52. Efficacy equivalence was concluded if associated 95% confidence intervals (CI) for least squares (LS) mean group differences fell within ± 1.503%. The primary pharmacodynamic (PD) endpoint was area under the effect curve for serum carboxy-terminal cross-linking telopeptide of type I collagen through the first 26 weeks, with an equivalence margin of 80-125% (for 95% CIs associated with geometric LS mean ratios). RESULTS: Equivalence was demonstrated for CT-P41 and US-denosumab with respect to primary efficacy (LS mean difference [95% CI]: - 0.139 [- 0.826, 0.548] in the full analysis set and - 0.280 [- 0.973, 0.414] in the per-protocol set) and PD (geometric LS mean ratio [95% CI]: 94.94 [90.75, 99.32]) endpoints. Secondary efficacy, PD, pharmacokinetics, and safety results were comparable among all groups up to Week 78, including after transitioning to CT-P41 from US-denosumab. CONCLUSIONS: CT-P41 was equivalent to US-denosumab in women with postmenopausal osteoporosis, with respect to primary efficacy and PD endpoints.

RESUMO

AIM: Endometriosis is one of the most common gynecologic diseases in women of reproductive age. The pathophysiology of endometriosis is still not fully understood. Phoenixin (PNX-14) is a newly discovered neuropeptide that regulates the hypothalamo-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis and reproductive functions. Recently, we reported that PNX-14, its precursor protein and receptor were expressed in human endometrium. Moreover, PNX-14 serum levels in endometriosis were reduced. This study aimed to evaluate the in vitro biological functions of physiological PNX-14 concentrations on the ectopic endometrium Z12 cells. METHODS: The proliferation and migration of Z12 cells were assessed using the xCELLigence® RTCA DP system following 72 h of stimulation with 0.05 and 0.2 nM of PNX-14. GPR173 and small integral membrane protein 20 (SMIM20) gene expression was evaluated using quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) and the protein levels of GPR173 were analyzed using Western blot analysis. RESULTS: PNX-14 at the concentration observed in the serum of patients with endometriosis (0.05 nM) reduced GPR173 and increased SMIM20 expression, while protein levels of GPR173 remained unchanged. Cell proliferation was increased by the 0.02 nM PNX-14- the concentration found in healthy subjects. The 0.2 nM of PNX-14 decreased SMIM20 expression with no change to GPR173 expression and reduced ectopic epithelial cell proliferation during the first 5 h after stimulation. However, at 72 h, the proliferation increased. CONCLUSIONS: This study shows that PNX-14 at endometriosis specific concentration desensitized ectopic epithelium to PNX-14, and increased the expression of SMIM20 to restore the physiological levels of PNX-14.

RESUMO

Amniotic fluid embolism is a rare and diagnostically challenging obstetric disease of high mortality rate. We present a case of a 33-year old parturient after vaginal birth, who presented with severe hemorrhagic shock with low platelet count and coagulopathy resistant to treatment with plasma, platelets and coagulation factors and despite of surgical management of bleeding. Laboratory findings revealed consumptive coagulopathy. Other symptoms included dyspnea and atelectatic changes on chest x-ray, together with augmentation of the heart with no proof of ventricular insufficiency in echocardiographic examination. The suspected reason of these alterations was amniotic fluid embolism. The patient survived and came back to her usual activity after 22 days of treatment.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to compare the costs of using carbetocin in the prevention of uterine atony following delivery of the infant by Cesarean section (C-section) under epidural or spinal anesthesia with standard methods of prevention (SMP). MATERIAL AND METHODS: This retrospective multicenter study was based on data from three medical centers. A questionnaire was developed to gather patient records on consumption and costs of resources related to C-section, prevention of uterine atony and postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) treatment. Six subpopulations were considered, depending on patient characteristics. The analysis covered two perspectives: that of the hospital and of the public payer. RESULTS: The subpopulations were homogenous, which was a premise for pooling the data. The use of carbetocin in the prevention of uterine atony following Cesarean section generates savings for hospital in comparison with SMP (oxytocin) in 5 of 6 subpopulations. The biggest savings were observed amongst patients who experienced severe PPH and reached 2.6-6.2 thousand PLN per patient. Costs of services related to C-section borne by the hospitals were higher than the refund received from a public payer. The greatest underestimation reached 12.1 thousand PLN per patient. Nevertheless, loss generated by this underfunding was lower in carbetocin versus oxytocin group. CONCLUSIONS: The use of carbetocin instead of SMP gives hospitals an opportunity to make savings as well as to reduce losses resulting from the underfunding of the services provided by the National Health Fund.

RESUMO

Stress urinary incontinence is a very serious problem which has been noticed by the WHO. This difficult medical condition poses a serious problem as it affects c.a. 20% of the female population and it increases up to 35% in the group of females over 60 years of age. Since there is no single standard surgical procedure which could solve this problem, numerous synthetic materials are used for the operations. It seems that the materials are effective as they improve the condition of women suffering from stress urinary incontinence. Unfortunately these materials have their shortcomings which might lead to certain post-operative complications. Stress urinary incontinence is a disease which affects the social life of the patients. It has a high percentage of recurrence and causes the patient substantial difficulties with keeping high standards of personal hygiene which is consequence makes it impossible to fulfill their social roles. The etiology of this disease is complex and calls for a cross-disciplinary approach to the problem. As there are no standardized or unanimous treatment methods of stress urinary incontinence, numerous sources based on the clinical experience of many medical centers suggest performing TVT and TOT procedures as the most effective treatment methods. The efficacy of the TOT procedure is about 90.8%.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: Fully effective intrapartum cardiotocographic (CTG) fetal heart monitoring is still missing. Visual analysis is far from credibility. Additional, computerized analysis techniques were proposed however they did not substantially decrease possible risks of fetal asphyxia. In twin pregnancies the problem is even more complicated. Our goal is to find the most valuable parameters in intrapartum CTG surveillance in twins, based on actual FIGO criteria. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Study included 58 women in labor who had been admitted to Delivery Department of tertiary care hospital with twin pregnancy in a period of one year. The features of the CTG (e.g., baseline, oscillation, decelerations, brady- or tachycardia) were grouped to create three variables that were closest to the FIGO CTG scale. All three groups were compared according to neonatal status (Apgar score at 5 min ≥ 7 or < 7; pH value in umbilical artery ≥ 7.20, < 7.20 or < 7.10 and BE (base excess) > or ≤ -12). Fetal status and its acid - base equilibrium was compared either with long term variability (LTV), short term variability (STV), or percentage of the signal loss. RESULTS: Out of 58 twin pregnancies, a total of 116 babies were born. One baby was born dead. From this group, 11 deliveries were natural births and 47 deliveries were C-sections. None of the analyzed features (pH, BE, Apgar, CTG features except tracing length, CTG FIGO categories) were statistically different between groups of singleton and twin pregnancies, except percentage of C-sections. No differences were found either for STV or LTV and fetal status.org CTG categories. CONCLUSIONS: Prior to cardiotocographic tracing of twins during labor, ultrasound examination should be mandatory. Considerable loss of signal in CTG tracing in twins should provoke ultrasonographic confirmation of the fetal status.

RESUMO

The aim of this study was to compare the iron and calcium status in singleton and twin pregnancies and to assess whether there is an increased risk for iron and calcium deficiency in twin gestation. The study included 105 singleton and 9 twin pregnancies at or above 35 weeks of gestation. Information on prenatal supplementation with iron or calcium was acquired, and adverse perinatal outcomes were recorded. Biosamples from all 114 mothers and 73 newborns (61 singleton and 12 twin newborns) were finally analyzed. Total iron and calcium concentrations in serum were measured through total reflection X-ray fluorescence analysis. The results indicated no significant differences in maternal serum iron and calcium concentrations between singleton and twin pregnancies. Similarly, iron and calcium concentrations in newborn umbilical cord serum samples were not different between singleton and twin pregnancies. The comparison of total iron and calcium between mothers and umbilical cord serum indicated significantly lower concentrations in the mothers, with the differences being not homogenous but rather pair-specific. A significant positive correlation between maternal serum and umbilical cord serum calcium concentration was noticed. Prenatal iron supplementation was associated with higher iron concentrations in both mothers and newborns, supporting the efficiency of supplementation and the quality of the study methods. Collectively, the data indicate no significant differences in serum iron and calcium concentrations with regard to singleton or twin pregnancies and the efficiency of iron supplementation during pregnancy for increasing iron status.

RESUMO

Introduction: Iodine is a pivotal component of thyroid hormones, and its deficiency leads to negative pregnancy outcomes. Therefore, during gestation, additional iodine supplementation is recommended. Objectives: By evaluating a group of women from western Poland, the study updated on iodine status during pregnancy and the effectiveness of iodine supplementation in relation to the maternal and neonatal thyroid function. Patients and methods: A total of 91 women were recruited before the delivery between 2019 and 2021. During the medical interview, the patients declared their dietary supplements intake. Thyroid parameters (TSH, ft3, ft4, a-TPO, a-Tg, and TRAb) were measured in the serum of mothers and in the cord blood of newborns after birth. Urinary iodine concentration (UIC) and urine/creatinine (UIC/crea) ratio were assessed in single urine samples using a validated high-performance liquid chromatography with ultraviolet detection (HPLC-UV). Neonatal TSH screening from dried blood spot was analyzed. Results: Pregnant women showed a median (interquartile range) UIC of 106 (69-156) µg/liter and UIC/crea ratio of 104 (62-221) µg/g, whereas approximately 20% had UIC/crea below 50 µg/g, indicating iodine deficiency. The iodine supplementation ratio was 68%. No significant differences in UIC, UIC/crea and thyroid parameters were found between iodine supplemented and non-supplemented groups; however, the highest ioduria was detected when iodine was supplemented in addition to levothyroxine in comparison with both substances administered separately. Patients with UIC/crea within 150-249 µg/g demonstrated the lowest TSH and a-TPO levels. Screening TSH was above 5 mIU/liter in 6% of children. Conclusions: Despite the national salt iodization and the recommendation to supplement iodine during gestation, the status of the abovementioned microelement and real-life intake revealed the ineffectiveness of the current iodine-deficiency prophylaxis model in pregnancy.

RESUMO

UNLABELLED: Myomas are most often benign tumours of the female genital tract. Uterine fibroids are the most common myomas, while uterine cervix and intraligamentary ones are statistically less frequent. The most common histopathological form is the leiomyoma and the least common is the cellular leiomyoma (< 5%). OBJECTIVES: As emphasized in the introduction, interlamellar parametrial cellular leiomyomas are extremely rare. Leiomyoma cellulare in the broad ligament of the uterus is the first case of that, therefore, the following situation deserves a short analysis and publication. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A 29-year-old patient was admitted to the Obstetrics and Gynaecology Clinic in Poznan due to a diagnosed lesion in the broad ligament of the uterus, possibly a myoma of the female genital tract. Cancer Antigen (CA) 125 level was 10.14 U/ml, beta sub-unit of human chorionic gonadotropin (beta- HOG) was 0.1 mIU/ml, acute-phase protein was (CRP) 0.09 mg/l. The technique of laparoscopic myomectomy by enucleation of a 6-cm in diameter myoma was used after preparation of the right parametrium tissue. The patient left the hospital on the second postoperative day in good overall condition. RESULTS: Histopathology revealed leiomyoma cellulare oedematosum. CONCLUSIONS: The above description of CL in the broad ligament of the uterus is a highly unique case and thus, deserves some attention, a short analysis.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study is to determine a healthy fetal growth pattern of twins from a Polish population based on an outcome-dependent growth curve. METHODS: The fetal growth data of live-born twin pregnancies between 25th and 40th week gestation in the period of 1 January 2005 to 31 March 2018 from the database of a tertiary care women's hospital in Western Poland was used to calculate birth weight percentiles. The growth curves of singletons from the same database were used as comparison. Because this study aimed for an outcome-dependent approach for the calculation of fetal growth curves, all babies born that may have high risk of unfavorable outcome were excluded. After application of all exclusion criteria, 1317 records referring to 2634 children were included in our analysis. Growth curves of singletons from the same database were used as reference for this study. RESULTS: A linear relationship between 10th, 50th, and 90th percentiles and gestational age were found for twins but not for singletons suggesting the different mechanisms of intrauterine growth between singleton and twin pregnancies. Week-to-week weight gain equal to or higher than 150 g in twins also predict a favorable outcome in absence of other pathologies. CONCLUSION: The calculated outcome-dependent fetal growth curves for twins in this study may help in the accurate diagnosis of small or large twin fetuses for their gestational age in this Western Poland population.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Tobacco smoke contains, among others, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), heterocyclic analogues, aromatic amines, N-nitrosamines, volatile hydrocarbons, aldehydes, phenols, miscellaneous organic compounds, metals, and inorganic compounds. Tobacco smoking can harm women's reproductive system and may reduce fertility. The objective of the study was to explore the effect of tobacco smoke on the menstrual cycle due to smoking and second-hand smoke-exposure. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study was performed on 153 women of reproductive age, who received care at the Gynaecological-Obstetric Clinical Hospital of the Poznan University of Medical Sciences. They were divided into three treatment groups: non-smokers, secondhand smokers, and smokers. Comprehensive assessment of all hormone levels: follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinizing hormone (LH), 17ß-oestradiol (E2), and progesterone (P), in the various phases of the menstrual cycle and with concomitant determinations of serum cotinine concentrations was performed. The menstrual cycle was observed with ultrasonography. RESULTS: Cigarette smoking may be an important factor in disrupting reproduction: 1. The increase in the oestradiol E2 level was accompanied by significantly lowered serum cotinine concentrations in tobacco smokers; 2. In smoking patients, the serum level of LH significantly increased on the first days of the menstrual cycle; 3. The higher levels of P (in the 14th and 21st days) were assumed to be the result of a longer menstrual cycle. CONCLUSIONS: Active and passive smoking may be an important contributor to reproductive health issues and deserves greater focus in health education programs directed towards women of reproductive age.

RESUMO

The demand for selenium (Se) increases during pregnancy since this element supports child growth, proper neuronal development and maternal thyroid function. The issue is particularly relevant for populations living in areas with a limited selenium supply, where many pregnant women opt for Se supplementation. The efficiency of this measure is unknown, although it seems vital in the prevention of severe Se deficiency. In order to evaluate this hypothesis, an observational study was conducted in Poland, where Se deficiency is prevalent. Pregnant women were invited to participate in the study and provided serum samples at the end of pregnancy (n = 115). Information on the supplemental intake of micronutrients was recorded in a face-to-face interview. In addition, serum samples were isolated from the cord blood of newborns at delivery (n = 112) and included in the analyses. Thyroid hormone status was evaluated by routine laboratory tests, and Se status was determined by total Se and selenoprotein P (SELENOP) concentrations and extracellular glutathione peroxidase (GPX3) activity. The three parameters of Se status correlated strongly within the group of mothers and within the group of newborns, with an additional significant correlation found among mother-child pairs. One-third of mothers reported additional Se intake, mainly as a component of multi-micronutrient supplements, at a mean (±SD) dosage of 42 ± 14 µg Se/day. Despite this regime, most of the women presented an insufficient Se status, with 79% of mothers displaying serum Se concentrations below 70 µg/L (indicating Se deficiency) and 22% showing levels below 45.9 µg/L (severe Se deficiency). The inadequate Se supply was also reflected in relatively low SELENOP concentrations and GPX3 activity. Neither total Se nor SELENOP or GPX3 levels were significantly higher in the group of mothers reporting the intake of supplements than in the non-supplementing group. Nevertheless, elevated SELENOP concentrations were observed in the subgroup receiving supplements with more than 55 µg/day. We conclude that the self-administered supplementation of small Se dosages was not sufficient to achieve replete Se status in the micronutrient scant area. However, the maternal Se deficit measured by either Se, SELENOP or GPX3 was transferred from mothers to the newborns, as the parameters correlated strongly in the mother-newborn pairs of samples. It is vital to re-evaluate the guidelines concerning pregnancy care and monitoring of micronutrient status during pregnancy, in particular in areas where deficiencies are present.

RESUMO

Small integral membrane protein 20/phoenixin (SMIM20/PNX) and its receptor GPR173 (G Protein-Coupled Receptor 173) play a role in the regulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis (HPG). The aim of the study was to determine PNX, FSH, LH, and 17ß-estradiol association in women with endometriosis, and the expression of SMIM20/PNX signaling via GPR173. Serum PNX, FSH, LH, and 17ß-estradiol concentrations were measured by enzyme and electrochemiluminescence immunoassay. SMIM20/PNX and GPR173 expression in the eutopic and ectopic endometrium was assessed by qPCR and immunohistochemistry. Reduced PNX level, increased LH/FSH ratio and elevated 17ß-estradiol concentration were found in patients with endometriosis. No differences in SMIM20 expression were observed between the studied endometria. GPR173 expression was lower in ectopic than in eutopic endometria. SMIM20 expression was mainly restricted to stroma. GPR173 was detected in some eutopic and ectopic stromal cells and in eutopic glandular epithelial cells. Discriminant analysis indicates the diagnostic relevance of PNX and LH/FSH ratio in patients with endometriosis. In women with endometriosis, reduced PNX levels and GPR173 expression may be responsible for HPG axis dysregulation. These new insights may contribute to a better understanding of the pathophysiology of endometriosis and provide the basis for a new strategy for diagnosis and treatment of endometriosis.

RESUMO

Endometriosis is a gynecological disease defined by the presence of endometrial tissue outside the uterus. To date, the effective treatment of this disease is still based on invasive surgery or laparoscopy. Chelidonium majus L. (Papaveraceae) belongs to medicinal, latex-bearing plants. Extracts from the plant are a rich source of pharmacologically active agents. Protoberberine compounds derived from C. majus possess anticancer and antiproliferative activities. In the present study of a rat model of endometriosis, we investigated the influence of the plant protoberberine-rich fraction (BBR) obtained from the medicinal plant C. majus on the development of endometriosis. To understand of BBR therapeutic potential for endometriosis, metabolomics has been applied to study. BBR was prepared from an ethanolic extract of dry plants C. majus. Rats (n = 16) with confirmed endometriosis were treated with BBR administered orally (1 g/kg) for 14 days. Blood serum samples were collected from all of the animals and metabolites were studied using the NMR method. The metabolomic pattern was compared before and after the protoberberine treatment. The performed analysis showed significant changes in the concentrations of metabolites that are involved in energy homeostasis, including glucose, glutamine, and lactate. Histopathological studies showed no recurrence of endometriosis loci after treatment with BBR. The results of the study found that BBR treatment prevents the recurrence of endometriosis in rats. Moreover, metabolomics profiling can be applied to better understand the mechanisms of action of these protoberberine secondary plant metabolites. Our findings provide new insights into the pharmaceutical activity of natural protoberberine plant compounds.

RESUMO

Pleomorphic rhabdomyosarcoma of the uterus is a rare malignant tumor. It is connected with postmenopausal abnormal vaginal bleeding and abdominal pain. We report a case of a 66-year-old postmenopausal woman diagnosed with abnormal vaginal bleeding and abdominal pain. Vaginal ultrasonography showed enlarged uterus, 82 mm x 64 mm in size. The patient underwent total abdominal hysterectomy and bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy with postoperative chemotherapy due to pleomorphic rhabdomyosarcoma of the uterus. The patient died 2.5 years after the surgery as a result of a rapid spread of the neoplastic process. The case of rhabdomyosarcoma, together with the review of the literature, is presented in the following work. We find that the rarity of this histological entity makes it particularly worthy of publication.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: To create outcome dependent fetal growth curves and birth weight standards that can be analyzed for use in clinic specifically for Western European populations. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We conducted a retrospective study on fetal growth and birth weight trends from live birth singleton pregnancies between 2005 and 2018 at one of the largest tertiary gynecologic-obstetric hospitals in Poland. The inclusion criteria were at least 22 weeks of gestation at birth regardless of delivery mode (vaginal or C-section), no congenital anomalies diagnosed before and after delivery and an Apgar score of at least 7 in the first minute. The final sample had a total of 39,413 cases (18,562 girls and 20,851 boys). We presented 7 (for all fetuses in the 5th, 10th, 25th, 50th, 75th, 90th and 95th percentiles) and 6 (for boys and girls each at 10th, 50th and 90th percentiles) fetal growth curves between 25 and 40 weeks of gestation. Birth weight trends were obtained and analyzed from all babies in the 5th, 10th, 25th, 50th, 75th and 95th percentiles born between 22 to 42 weeks of gestation with also separate trends for boys and girls. RESULTS: The largest differences in fetal growth curves were observed in the 10th and 50th percentiles between 22 and 34 weeks of gestation. A decreasing fetal weight gain pattern was observed between 27 and 30 weeks and after 38 weeks of gestation, the decrease was more drastic in female. A significant increase from 2009 to 2017 was observed in the weight of 50th percentile babies born at or after 35 weeks. We found significant discrepancies between our results and the most used European fetal growth curves particularly in the 10th and 90th percentile weights at 30 weeks. CONCLUSIONS: Separate scales for boys and girls were implied and given the overall difference form commonly used references. We believe there is significant value in using these unique patterns found in fetal growth curves and birth weights of ethnically homogenous population (such as Poland) at everyday clinical practice for more opportunities of safe obstetric care and higher chances of delivering a healthy child.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: In the present study we aimed to describe apoptosis patterns in eutopic endometrium in women suffering from endometriosis in order to assess its value as a marker of early forms of endometriosis, and also to try to answer whether endometriosis is caused by changes within the eutopic endometrium or whether endometriotic lesions change the characteristics of eutopic endometrium. STUDY DESIGN: The study was performed on 125 women treated in Division of Reproduction. In 52 patients peritoneal endometriosis was diagnosed (I(0)-23; II(0)-29). Seventy-three patients in whom no endometriotic foci could be found at laparoscopy were qualified as the control group. Endometrial biopsy 7-9 days after ovulation was taken for assessment of apoptosis (TUNEL) and routine histology. RESULTS: Apoptosis indices in the eutopic endometrium of women with endometriosis were lower compared to women without endometriosis. In the endometrial glands apoptosis indices were 2.94+/-1.66 versus 5.23+/-2.06 (p<0.01) in the group of women with and without endometriosis, respectively. In the endometrial stroma apoptosis indices were estimated at 2.04+/-1.72 in women with endometriosis and 4.12+/-1.62 in the control group (p<0.01). CONCLUSIONS: The observed changes could support the hypothesis of the different properties of eutopic endometrium in endometriotic women as a causing factor of peritoneal endometriosis.

RESUMO

A diagnostic procedure in the medical treatment of middle hydrothorax at haemodynamically efficient fetus has been presented in the research. Container of the liquid in the fetal thorax has been observed since the eleventh week of pregnancy. Infection by TORCH viruses has been excluded and typical 46,XX female karyotype has been found in the cytogenic test. A liquid in the pericardial sack (without any sings of the fetal heart defect) was observed in the ECHO examination from 23 to 37 week of pregnancy. Cesarean section was made after 37 weeks of pregnancy and the new-born baby was found to be in good condition, with body mass of 3130g and 9 points in the Apgar scale. The child cardiologist did not diagnose any heart disorders. Awaiting attitude, while monitoring the state of the fetus, seems to be the right course of action in cases of haemodynamically efficient fetus with isolated hydrothorax.

RESUMO

Maternal smoking during pregnancy is associated with not only obstetrical and pediatrician complications with fetus, newborn and child but also with placenta. The aim of the work was the estimation of placental calcification between maternal cigarette smoking and non-smoking pregnant women. All women have taken vitamin supplements during time of experiment. The study group consisted of 200 pregnant women (100 smokers and 100 non-smokers). All patients were admitted and delivered singleton births in the Gynecological and Obstetric Clinical Hospital in Poznan, between 2004-2007. A questionnaire was used as a study tool. s. The study groups were similar under age, education, obstetrical interview and cigarette smoking (5-10 cigarettes/day). Ultrasound investigations showed placental calcification in 36% vs 45% pregnancy at 30 +/- 2 weeks of gestation and in 52% vs 57% at 40 +/- 2 weeks of pregnancy as well as in 55% vs 58% placentas in macroscopic examination, between smoking and non-smoking women. Cigarette smoking should not be considered as exclusive factor leading to formation deposits of calcium in placenta. The consumption of vitamin supplements probably also involve calcification of placenta tissue.
