RESUMO

Little is known about the factors regulating carotenoid biosynthesis in roots. In this study, we characterized DCAR_032551, the candidate gene of the Y locus responsible for the transition of root color from ancestral white to yellow during carrot (Daucus carota) domestication. We show that DCAR_032551 encodes a REPRESSOR OF PHOTOSYNTHETIC GENES (RPGE) protein, named DcRPGE1. DcRPGE1 from wild carrot (DcRPGE1W) is a repressor of carotenoid biosynthesis. Specifically, DcRPGE1W physically interacts with DcAPRR2, an ARABIDOPSIS PSEUDO-RESPONSE REGULATOR2 (APRR2)-like transcription factor. Through this interaction, DcRPGE1W suppresses DcAPRR2-mediated transcriptional activation of the key carotenogenic genes phytoene synthase 1 (DcPSY1), DcPSY2, and lycopene ε-cyclase (DcLCYE), which strongly decreases carotenoid biosynthesis. We also demonstrate that the DcRPGE1W-DcAPRR2 interaction prevents DcAPRR2 from binding to the RGATTY elements in the promoter regions of DcPSY1, DcPSY2, and DcLCYE. Additionally, we identified a mutation in the DcRPGE1 coding region of yellow and orange carrots that leads to the generation of alternatively spliced transcripts encoding truncated DcRPGE1 proteins unable to interact with DcAPRR2, thereby failing to suppress carotenoid biosynthesis. These findings provide insights into the transcriptional regulation of carotenoid biosynthesis and offer potential target genes for enhancing carotenoid accumulation in crop plants.

The color of purple carrot taproots mainly depends on the anthocyanins sequestered in the vacuoles. Glutathione S-transferases (GSTs) are key enzymes involved in anthocyanin transport. However, the precise mechanism of anthocyanin transport from the cytosolic surface of the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) to the vacuoles in carrots remains unclear. In this study, we conducted a comprehensive analysis of the carrot genome, leading to the identification of a total of 41 DcGST genes. Among these, DcGST1 emerged as a prominent candidate, displaying a strong positive correlation with anthocyanin pigmentation in carrot taproots. It was highly expressed in the purple taproot tissues of purple carrot cultivars, while it was virtually inactive in the non-purple taproot tissues of purple and non-purple carrot cultivars. DcGST1, a homolog of Arabidopsis thaliana TRANSPARENT TESTA 19 (TT19), belongs to the GSTF clade and plays a crucial role in anthocyanin transport. Using the CRISPR/Cas9 system, we successfully knocked out DcGST1 in the solid purple carrot cultivar 'Deep Purple' ('DPP'), resulting in carrots with orange taproots. Additionally, DcMYB7, an anthocyanin activator, binds to the DcGST1 promoter, activating its expression. Compared with the expression DcMYB7 alone, co-expression of DcGST1 and DcMYB7 significantly increased anthocyanin accumulation in carrot calli. However, overexpression of DcGST1 in the two purple carrot cultivars did not change the anthocyanin accumulation pattern or significantly increase the anthocyanin content. These findings improve our understanding of anthocyanin transport mechanisms in plants, providing a molecular foundation for improving and enhancing carrot germplasm.

The melon fly Zeugodacus cucurbitae Coquillett (Diptera: Tephritidae) is an agricultural quarantine pest threatening fruit and vegetable production. Heat shock cognate 70 (Hsc70), which is a homolog of the heat shock protein 70 (Hsp70), was first discovered in mice testes and plays an important role in spermatogenesis. In this study, we identified and cloned five Hsc70 genes from melon fly, namely ZcHsc70_1/2/3/4/5. Phylogenetic analysis showed that these proteins are closely related to Hsc70s from other Diptera insects. Spatiotemporal expression analysis showed that ZcHsc70_1 and ZcHsc70_2 are highly expressed in Z. cucurbitae testes. Fluorescence in situ hybridization further demonstrated that ZcHsc70_1 and ZcHsc70_2 are expressed in the transformation and maturation regions of testes, respectively. Moreover, RNA interference-based suppression of ZcHsc70_1 or ZcHsc70_2 resulted in a significant decrease of 74.61% and 63.28% in egg hatchability, respectively. Suppression of ZcHsc70_1 expression delayed the transformation of sperm cells to mature sperms. Meanwhile, suppression of ZcHsc70_2 expression decreased both sperm cells and mature sperms by inhibiting the meiosis of spermatocytes. Our findings show that ZcHsc70_1/2 regulates spermatogenesis and further affects the male fertility in the melon fly, showing potential as targets for pest control in sterile insect technique by genetic manipulation of males.

The first domesticated carrots were thought to be purple carrots rich in anthocyanins. The anthocyanins biosynthesis in solid purple carrot taproot was regulated by DcMYB7 within P3 region containing a gene cluster of six DcMYBs. Here, we described a MYB gene within the same region, DcMYB11c, which was highly expressed in the purple pigmented petioles. Overexpression of DcMYB11c in 'Kurodagosun' (KRDG , orange taproot carrot with green petioles) and 'Qitouhuang' (QTHG , yellow taproot carrot with green petioles) resulted in deep purple phenotype in the whole carrot plants indicating anthocyanins accumulation. Knockout of DcMYB11c in 'Deep Purple' (DPPP , purple taproot carrot with purple petioles) through CRISPR/Cas9-based genome editing resulted in pale purple phenotype due to the dramatic decrease of anthocyanins content. DcMYB11c could induce the expression of DcbHLH3 and anthocyanins biosynthesis genes to jointly promote anthocyanins biosynthesis. Yeast one-hybrid assay (Y1H) and dual-luciferase reporter assay (LUC) revealed that DcMYB11c bound to the promoters of DcUCGXT1 and DcSAT1 and directly activated the expression of DcUCGXT1 and DcSAT1 responsible for anthocyanins glycosylation and acylation, respectively. Three transposons were present in the carrot cultivars with purple petioles but not in the carrot cultivars with green petioles. We revealed the core factor, DcMYB11c, involved in anthocyanins pigmentation in carrot purple petioles. This study provides new insights into precise regulation mechanism underlying anthocyanins biosynthesis in carrot. The orchestrated regulation mechanism in carrot might be conserved across the plant kingdom and useful for other researchers working on anthocyanins accumulation in different tissues.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Vaccine is the most essential avenue to prevent hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection in infants and preschool children in China, with the largest populations carrying HBV in the world. This study aimed to evaluate the factors associating the response level of anti-HBs in children, providing instructions for HBV prevention clinically. METHODS: The children taking physical examinations in the Third Xiangya Hospital from January 2013 to April 2020 were recruited. Telephone follow-up were adopted to collect further information. Univariate logistic regression was used to analyse the relationship between age and anti-HBs expression. Grouping by age and anti-HBs expression, we used chi-square test and T test to compare qualitative and quantitative data between positive group and negative group in each age subgroup. The meaningful variables (P < 0.10) in chi-square test or T test were further assessed with collinearity and chosen for univariate and multivariate logistic regression analysis by the stepwise backward maximum likelihood method (αin = 0.05, αout = 0.10). RESULTS: A total of 5838 samples (3362 males, 57.6%) were enrolled. In total, the incidence of negative anti-HBs increased with age[OR = 1.037(1.022-1.051)]. Multivariate logistic regression analysis illustrated that anemia[OR = 0.392(0.185-0.835)], age[OR = 2.542(1.961-3.295)] and Vit D[OR = 0.977(0.969-0.984)] in 0.5-2.99 years subgroup, Zinc deficiency[OR = 0.713(0.551-0.923] and age[OR = 1.151(1.028-1.289)] in 3-5.99 years subgroup, Vit D[OR = 0.983(0.971-0.995)] in 12-18 years subgroup had significant association with anti-HBs. CONCLUSIONS: This retrospective study illustrated that age, anemia status, zinc deficiency and vitamin D were associated with anti-HBs expression in specific age groups of children, which could serve as a reference for the prevention of HBV.

The taproot of purple carrot accumulated rich anthocyanin, but non-purple carrot did not. MYB transcription factors (TFs) condition anthocyanin biosynthesis in many plants. Currently, genome-wide identification and evolution analysis of R2R3-MYB gene family and their roles involved in conditioning anthocyanin biosynthesis in carrot is still limited. In this study, a total of 146 carrot R2R3-MYB TFs were identified based on the carrot transcriptome and genome database and were classified into 19 subfamilies on the basis of R2R3-MYB domain. These R2R3-MYB genes were unevenly distributed among nine chromosomes, and Ka/Ks analysis suggested that they evolved under a purified selection. The anthocyanin-related S6 subfamily, which contains 7 MYB TFs, was isolated from R2R3-MYB TFs. The anthocyanin content of rhizodermis, cortex, and secondary phloem in 'Black nebula' cultivar reached the highest among the 3 solid purple carrot cultivars at 110 days after sowing, which was approximately 4.20- and 3.72-fold higher than that in the 'Deep purple' and 'Ziwei' cultivars, respectively. The expression level of 7 MYB genes in purple carrot was higher than that in non-purple carrot. Among them, DcMYB113 (DCAR_008994) was specifically expressed in rhizodermis, cortex, and secondary phloem tissues of 'Purple haze' cultivar, with the highest expression level of 10,223.77 compared with the control 'DPP' cultivar at 70 days after sowing. DcMYB7 (DCAR_010745) was detected in purple root tissue of 'DPP' cultivar and its expression level in rhizodermis, cortex, and secondary phloem was 3.23-fold higher than that of secondary xylem at 110 days after sowing. Our results should be useful for determining the precise role of S6 subfamily R2R3-MYB TFs participating in anthocyanin biosynthesis in carrot.

Low-dimensional (LD) perovskites can effectively passivate and stabilize 3D perovskites for high-performance perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Regards CsPbI3 -based PSCs, the influence of high-temperature annealing on the LD perovskite passivation effect has to be taken into account due to fact the black-phase CsPbI3 crystallization requires high-temperature treatment, however, which has been rarely concerned so far. Here, the thermal stability of LD perovskites based on three hydrophobic organic ammonium salts and their passivation effect toward CsPbI3 and the whole device performance, have been investigated. It is found that, phenyltrimethylammonium iodide (PTAI) and its corresponding LD perovskites exhibit excellent thermal stability. Further investigation reveals that PTAI-based LD perovskites are mainly distributed at grain boundaries, which not only enhances the phase stability of CsPbI3 but also effectively suppresses non-radiative recombination. As a consequence, the champion PSC device based on CsPbI3 exhibits a record efficiency of 21.0 % with high stability.

Besides widely used surface passivation, engineering the film crystallization is an important and more fundamental route to improve the performance of all-inorganic perovskite solar cells. Herein, we have developed a urea-ammonium thiocyanate (UAT) molten salt modification strategy to fully release and exploit coordination activities of SCN- to deposit high-quality CsPbI3 film for efficient and stable all-inorganic solar cells. The UAT is derived by the hydrogen bond interactions between urea and NH4 + from NH4 SCN. With the UAT, the crystal quality of the CsPbI3 film has been significantly improved and a long single-exponential charge recombination lifetime of over 30 ns has been achieved. With these benefits, the cell efficiency has been promoted to over 20 % (steady-state efficiency of 19.2 %) with excellent operational stability over 1000 h. These results demonstrate a promising development route of the CsPbI3 related photoelectric devices.

Deep learning-based reconstruction has emerged as an effective tool in fluorescence microscopy, with the potential to resolve diffraction-limited structures. However, most deep-learning reconstruction methods employed an end-to-end strategy, which ignored physical laws in the imaging process and made the preparation of training data highly challenging as well. In this study, we have proposed a novel deconvolution algorithm based on an imaging model, deep-learning priors and the alternating direction method of multipliers. This scheme decouples the reconstruction into two separate sub-problems, one for deblurring and one for restraining noise and artifacts. As a result of the decoupling, we are able to introduce deep-learning image priors and a variance stabilizing transform against targeted image degeneration due to the low photon budget. Deep-learning priors are learned from the general image dataset, in which biological images do not have to be involved, and are more powerful than hand-designed ones. Moreover, the use of the imaging model ensures high fidelity and generalization. Experiments on various kinds of measurement data show that the proposed algorithm outperforms existing state-of-the-art deconvolution algorithms in resolution enhancement and generalization.

BACKGROUND: Long non-coding RNAs (LncRNAs) have been increasingly confirmed to be abnormally expressed in human cancer and closely related to tumorigenesis. LncRNA ACTA2-AS1 is abnormally expressed in multiple tumors and participates in their development. However, whether ACTA2-AS1 plays a role in the development of cervical cancer (CC) and the exact mechanism of its role has not been elucidated. METHODS: Quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR) was conducted to detect the expression level of messenger RNA of ACTA2-AS1, miR-143-3p and SMAD3 in tumor tissues and cells. Additionally, SMAD3 protein expression by western blots in cells. Small interference RNA against ACTA2-AS1 or SMAD3 and miR-143-3p mimic/inhibitor was designed and transfected into CC cell lines to investigate their correlations and potential impacts on cell function. Cell Counting Kit-8 (CCK-8) assay, colony formation, cell cycle assay, transwell assay and flow cytometry analysis were performed to detect the specific effects on cell line proliferation, metastasis and apoptosis. RESULTS: ACTA2-AS1 was significantly increased in CC tissues and cells and miR-143-3p was down-regulated. Clinically, the higher expression of ACTA2-AS1 was significantly correlated with higher FIGO stage. Loss-of-function assay revealed that silencing of ACTA2-AS1 inhibited cell proliferation, colony formation, migration and promoted apoptosis in CC. Additionally, Pearson correlation analysis showed that the expression of ACTA2-AS1 and miR-143-3p were negatively correlated. Dual-luciferase reporter assay and further mechanistic experiments confirmed that ACTA2-AS1 could sponge and regulate the expression of miR-143-3p. Furthermore, SMAD3 was the target gene of miR-143-3p and ACTA2-AS1 could upregulate SMAD3 through acting as a competitive endogenous RNA (ceRNA) of miR-143-3p. Finally, rescue assay demonstrated that the ACTA2-AS1/miR-143-3p/SMAD3 axis played an important role in the proliferation, migration and apoptosis of CC cells. CONCLUSIONS: In summary, our study revealed that ACTA2-AS1 upregulates SMAD3 by competitively binding miR-143-3p, thereby accelerating CC progression. The ACTA2-AS1/miR-143-3p/SMAD3 axis can play a crucial role in cervical carcinogenesis, providing new clues for the early diagnosis and treatment of CC.

Endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress is easily observed in chronic liver disease, which often causes accumulation of unfolded or misfolded proteins in the ER, leading to unfolded protein response (UPR). Regulating protein degradation is an integral part of UPR to relieve ER stress. The major protein degradation system includes the ubiquitin-proteasome system (UPS) and autophagy. All three arms of UPR triggered in response to ER stress can regulate UPS and autophagy. Accumulated misfolded proteins could activate these arms, and then generate various transcription factors to regulate the expression of UPS-related and autophagy-related genes. The protein degradation process regulated by UPR has great significance in many chronic liver diseases, including non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), alcoholic liver disease (ALD), viral hepatitis, liver fibrosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC). In most instances, the degradation of excessive proteins protects cells with ER stress survival from apoptosis. According to the specific functions of protein degradation in chronic liver disease, choosing to promote or inhibit this process is promising as a potential method for treating chronic liver disease.

Positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) imaging can simultaneously acquire functional metabolic information and anatomical information of the human body. How to rationally fuse the complementary information in PET/CT for accurate tumor segmentation is challenging. In this study, a novel deep learning based variational method was proposed to automatically fuse multimodality information for tumor segmentation in PET/CT. A 3D fully convolutional network (FCN) was first designed and trained to produce a probability map from the CT image. The learnt probability map describes the probability of each CT voxel belonging to the tumor or the background, and roughly distinguishes the tumor from its surrounding soft tissues. A fuzzy variational model was then proposed to incorporate the probability map and the PET intensity image for an accurate multimodality tumor segmentation, where the probability map acted as a membership degree prior. A split Bregman algorithm was used to minimize the variational model. The proposed method was validated on a non-small cell lung cancer dataset with 84 PET/CT images. Experimental results demonstrated that: 1). Only a few training samples were needed for training the designed network to produce the probability map; 2). The proposed method can be applied to small datasets, normally seen in clinic research; 3). The proposed method successfully fused the complementary information in PET/CT, and outperformed two existing deep learning-based multimodality segmentation methods and other multimodality segmentation methods using traditional fusion strategies (without deep learning); 4). The proposed method had a good performance for tumor segmentation, even for those with Fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) uptake inhomogeneity and blurred tumor edges (two major challenges in PET single modality segmentation) and complex surrounding soft tissues (one major challenge in CT single modality segmentation), and achieved an average dice similarity indexes (DSI) of 0.86 ± 0.05, sensitivity (SE) of 0.86 ± 0.07, positive predictive value (PPV) of 0.87 ± 0.10, volume error (VE) of 0.16 ± 0.12, and classification error (CE) of 0.30 ± 0.12.

Advances in microarray, RNA-seq and omics techniques, thousands of long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) with unknown functions have been discovered. LncRNAs have presented a diverse perspective on gene regulation in diverse biological processes, especially in human immune response. Macrophages participate in the whole phase of immune inflammatory response. They are able to shape their phenotype and arouse extensive functional activation after receiving physiological and pathological stimuli. Emerging studies indicated that lncRNAs participated in the gene regulatory network during complex biological processes of macrophage, including macrophage-induced inflammatory responses. Here, we reviewed the existing knowledges of lncRNAs in the processes of macrophage development and polarization, and their roles in several different inflammatory diseases. Specifically, we focused on how lncRNAs function in macrophage, which might help to discover some potential therapeutic targets and diagnostic biomarkers.

AIM: To assess the relationship between Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) strains colonizing the anterior nares and clinical isolate colonizing other, non-nasal infectious sites in children with S. aureus infections. METHODS: Fifty-six hospitalized children with S. aureus infection were screened and 22 pairs of nasal carrier isolates and non-nasal clinical isolates were characterized by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay for the detection of methicillin resistance (mecA) gene, Panton-Valentine leukocidin virulence (PVL) gene, and multilocus sequence typing (MLST) for the purpose of identifying sequence types of S. aureus. RESULTS: In this study, Sequence Type (ST) 59 was found to be the predominant clonal type in the nasal carrier isolates, with statistically significant differences in positive mecA and PVL expression compared with other STs. In general, there was consistence between the STs detected in the nose and other, non-nasal sites for each patient (Kappa = 0.950), where 19 pairs (86.4%) of colonization isolates and their corresponding non-nasal clinical isolates were indistinguishable in mecA, PVL, and ST expression. CONCLUSION: ST59 is reported here as a dominant and virulent methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) clone which may has become a leading sequence type among virulent MRSAs in Sichuan area. Overall there is a strong correlation between colonization and infection in pediatric patients that may be genetically indistinguishable and endogenous. Therefore, nasal swabs as a routine test for children, the elimination of nasal carriage may be considered as a prevention strategy for some systemic S. aureus infections.

BACKGROUND: Few prospective birth cohort studies are available on the effects of prenatal and early-life exposures on food allergy and eczema among Chinese children. The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of prenatal and early-life exposures on food allergy and eczema during the first year of life in a prospective birth cohort study. METHODS: This study was based on a prospective, observational birth cohort of 976 mother-child pairs in three Streets in Changsha, China from January to December 2015. Data on prenatal, early-life exposures and allergic outcomes were obtained from questionnaires collected at birth, and 1, 3, 6, 8, and 12 months of age. Multivariate logistic regression models were performed to estimate the effects of prenatal and early-life exposures on food allergy and eczema. RESULTS: Common risk factors for food allergy and eczema in infancy were parental history of allergy, while moderate eggs consumption (3-4 times/week) during pregnancy was protective for both of them compared with low consumption (≤ 2 times/week). Factors only associated with food allergy were maternal aquatic products consumption during pregnancy, number of older siblings and age of solid food introduction, whereas factors only associated with eczema were maternal milk or milk products consumption during pregnancy, maternal antibiotic exposure during pregnancy, season of birth and antibiotic exposure through medication during the first year of life. CONCLUSION: Our study suggests that factors associated with food allergy and eczema are multifaceted, which involving hereditary, environmental and nutritional exposures. Furthermore, differential factors influence the development of food allergy and eczema in infants.

The total variation (TV) regularization has been widely used in statistically iterative cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) reconstruction, showing ability to preserve object edges. However, the TV regularization can also produce staircase effect and tend to over-smooth the reconstructed images due to its piecewise constant assumption. In this study, we proposed to use the structure tensor total variation (STV) that penalizes the eigenvalues of the structure tensor for CBCT reconstruction. The STV penalty extends the TV penalty, with many important properties maintained such as convexity and rotation and translation invariance. The STV penalty utilizes gradient information more effectively and has a stronger ability to capture local image structural variation. The objective function was constructed with the penalized weighted least-square (PWLS) strategy and the gradient descent (GD) method was used to optimize the objective function. Besides, we investigated whether the norms involved in the STV penalty affected the reconstruction performance and found that the l1-norm gave the better performance than the l2-norm and l ∞-norm. We also examined performance of the STV penalties constructed using different kernel functions and found that the STV with the Gaussian kernel had the best performance, and the STVs with Uniform, Logistic, and Sigmoid kernels had similar performance to each other. We evaluated our reconstruction method with the STV penalty on computer simulated phantoms and physical phantoms. The results demonstrated that STV led to better reconstruction performance than TV, both visually and quantitatively. For the Catphan 600 physical phantom, the STV1 penalty was 175% and 623% better than the low-dose FDK and the high-dose FDK, and 14% better than the TV penalty at the matched noise level, according to the average contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR); while for the Compressed Sensing simulation phantom, the peak signal to noise ratio (PSNR) of reconstructed results using STV1, STV2, and STV ∞ were 40.67 dB, 38.72 dB, and 37.40 dB, respectively, all being significantly better than 36.84 dB using TV.

OBJECTIVE: LncRNA TINCR has been reported to be involved in cardiac hypertrophy, while its involvement in diabetic cardiomyopathy is unknown. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this study, myocardial biopsy and serum collected from patients with diabetic cardiomyopathy, diabetic patients without cardiopathy and healthy controls, and the expression of TINCR in those tissues was detected by quantitative reverse-transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR). ROC curve analysis was performed to evaluate the diagnostic value of TINCR expression for diabetic cardiomyopathy. Human cardiomyocyte cells (Cat# 12440053, Thermo Fisher Scientific) were treated with high glucose, and the expression of TINCR was detected by qRT-PCR. TINCR expression was transfected into cardiomyocyte cells and cell apoptosis under high glucose treated was detected by cell apoptosis assay. RESULTS: We found that TINCR expression level in myocardial biopsy and serum was significantly lower in patients with diabetic cardiomyopathy than in diabetic patients without cardiopathy and healthy controls, while no significant differences were found between diabetic patients without cardiopathy and healthy controls. TINCR expression level can be used to effective diagnose diabetic cardiomyopathy. High glucose treatment showed no significant effects on the expression of TINCR in human cardiomyocyte cells, and TINCR overexpression inhibited apoptosis of cardiomyocytes under high glucose treatment. CONCLUSION: Therefore, we conclude that lncRNA TINCR is downregulated in diabetic cardiomyopathy and it can inhibit cardiomyocyte apoptosis.

BACKGROUND: It has been reported that lipid-rich enteral nutrition (EN) could ameliorate inflammation in various diseases. In this study, we investigated whether lipid-rich EN could control intestinal inflammation, improve intestinal motility and mucosal barrier injury after intestinal ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury. METHODS: Male adult rats received saline, conventional EN, or lipid-rich EN via gavage before and after intestinal I/R injury. The superior mesenteric artery was occluded for 60 min. The sham group underwent laparotomy without superior mesenteric artery occlusion and was administrated saline. Intestinal motility was measured 4 h after intestinal I/R injury by fluorescein isothiocyanate-dextran transit assay; the intestinal and systemic inflammation were assessed by analyzing intestinal and serum concentrations of tumor necrosis factor α, interleukin (IL)- 6, and IL-10, separately. The intestinal mucosal barrier injury was assessed by analyzing the serum levels of intestinal fatty acid-binding protein (I-FABP) and intestinal mucosal tight junction (TJ) proteins. RESULTS: The intestinal I/R injury decreased intestinal motility and intestinal mucosal TJs expression significantly when compared with the sham group (P < 0.05). The intestinal and systemic inflammatory parameters and the serum I-FABP were also significantly higher in the I/R groups than those in the sham group (P < 0.05). Both conventional and lipid-rich EN increased the intestinal motility and the intestinal mucosal TJs expression and decreased the intestinal and systemic inflammatory parameter and serum I-FABP levels to different degrees when compared with the I/R group (P < 0.05). However, lipid-rich EN significantly improved the negative alterations in these biochemical parameters when compared with the conventional EN (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: These results suggest that lipid-rich EN might be able to control intestinal inflammation, improve intestinal motility and mucosal barrier injury after intestinal I/R injury. Thus, the administration of lipid-rich EN may be an effective treatment for promoting gastrointestinal function recovery after intestinal I/R injury.

OBJECTIVE: To study the status and influential factors of iron deficient anemia (IDA) among infants aged 8 months in Changsha City.
 Methods: A case-control study was performed in this research. The case group including 105 8-month-old infants definitely diagnosed as IDA based on standardized blood test. Four-times numbers of age- and genger-matched infants without IDA were selected as a control group. Chi-square test and conditional logistic regression was used to analyze the influential factors for IDA.
 Results: The incidence rate of IDA among infants aged 8 months in Changsha City was 14.7%. The risk factors were as follows: mother with anemia in late pregnancy (OR=3.540, 95% CI 1.898 to 6.601), mixed feeding within 6 months old (OR=1.682, 95% CI 1.099 to 2.574), artificial feeding within 6 months old (OR=4.162, 95% CI 1.343 to 12.896), complementary feeding before 6 months old (OR=1.423, 95% CI 1.022 to 1.982), complementary feeding at or after 7 months old (OR=4.415, 95% CI 2.150 to 9.064), recurrent respiratory tract infections within 8 months old (OR=2.878, 95% CI 1.224 to 6.764), and repeated diarrhea within 8 months old (OR=3.710, 95% CI 1.533 to 8.980).
 Conclusion: There is certain incidence rate of IDA among infants aged 8 months in Changsha City. To prevent the IDA among infants, we should treat mothers' anemia during pregnancy, advocate scientific feeding, encourage complete breastfeeding until 6 months old, add complementary food timely and reasonably, treat infants suffering from respiratory or digestive diseases actively.
